[Indrajith consoles Ravana, takes up Brahmastra and attacks Rama and Lakshmana and the army of Vanaras and makes them become unconscious by the network of arrows.]

tatōhatānrākṣasapuṅgavāṅstān dēvāntakāditriśirōtikāyān .

rakṣōgaṇāstatrahatāvaśiṣṭāstērāvaṇāyatvaritāśśaśaṅsuḥ ।।6.73.1।।


tataḥ then, statra there, hatāvaśiṣṭāḥ those survived the killings, tē they, rakṣōgaṇāḥ Rakshasa troops, tvaritāḥ hurriedly, rākṣasapuṅgavān Rakshasas leader, tān him, dēvāntakāditriśirōtikāyan Devanthaka, Trisira, Atikaya, hatān having been killed, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, śaśaṅsuḥ reported.

Then the Rakshasas who survived the killings, hurriedly reported to the Rakshasa king, Ravana about the killing of Devanthaka, Trisira and Atikaya.
tatōhatāṅstān sahasāniśamyarājāmumōhapariplutākṣaḥ .

putrakṣayaṅbhrātṛvadhaṅ ca ghōraṅvicintyarājāvipulaṅpradadhyau ।।6.73.2।।


tataḥ there upon, rājā king, tān them, hatān killed, sahasā suddenly, niśamya getting to know, mumōhapariplutākṣaḥ lost senses by the eyes bathed in tears, ghōram dreadful, putrakṣayam and son, bhrātṛvadhaṅ ca about killing of his brother, vicintya thinking, vipulam seriously, pradadhyau held.

There upon the king, getting to know suddenly about the dreadful killing of his son and brother lost his senses. His eyes were filled with tears, and he was thinking seriously.
tatasturājānamudīkṣyadīnaṅśōkārṇavēsamparipupluvānam .

ratharṣabhōrākṣasarājasūnustamindrajidvākyamidaṅbabhāṣē ।।6.73.3।।


tataḥ then, dīnam desperate, śōkārṇavē sea of sorrow, samparīpupluvānam immersed in, rājānam Oh king, udīkṣya submitted, ratharṣabhaḥ foremost of chariot riders, rākṣasarājasūnuḥ Rakshasa king's son, indrandrajit Indrajith, tam him, idaṅvākyam these words, babhāṣē spoke.

Thereafter, seeing the desperate Rakshasa king immersed in a sea of sorrow, Indrajith, son of Ravana, foremost of the chariot riders, submitted as follows.
na tāta mōhaṅparigantumarhasiyatrēndrajijajīvatirākṣasēndra .

nēndrāribāṇābhihatōhikaścitprāṇān samarthassamarē.bhipātum ।।6.73.4।।


rākṣasēndra Rakshasa king,tāt dear, yatra there, indrajit Indrajith, jīvati alive, mōham delusion, parigantum to despair, na arhasi not give way, samarē in battle, indrāribāṇābhihataḥ struck with arrows of Indra, kaścit indeed, prāṇān life, abhipātum strike, na samarthaḥhi not capable.

"Dear king of Rakshasas! Do not give way to despair when Indrajith is alive. Indeed, struck by Indrajith's arrows in battle it is not possible for anyone to be with life."
paśyādyarāmaṅsahalakṣmaṇēnamadbāṇanirbhinnavikīrṇadēham .

gatāyuṣaṅbhūmitalēśayānaṅśitaiśśarairācitasarvagātram ।।6.73.5।।


adya now, madbāṇanirbhinnavikīrṇadēham body torn to pieces along with his army, gatāyuṣam life ceased, bhūmitalē on the ground, śayānam lying, śitaiḥ pierced, śaraiḥ arrows, ācitasarvagātram all limbs covered with arrows clung, lakṣmaṇēnasaha along with Lakshmana also, rāmam Rama, paśya you will see.

"Now you will see Rama along with Lakshmana also, their body torn into pieces along with their army their life ceased, lying on the ground pierced with arrows all over the limbs."
imāṅpratijñāṅśṛṇuśakraśatrōḥsuniścitāṅpauruṣadaivayuktām .

adyaivarāmaṅsahalakṣmaṇēnasantarpayiṣyāmiśarairamōghaiḥ ।।6.73.6।।


śakraśatrōḥ Indra's enemy, suniścitām fully determined, pauruṣadaivayuktām manliness and divinity combined, imām this, pratijñām vow, śṛṇu listen, adyaiva now itself, lakṣmaṇēnasaha along with Lakshmana, rāmam Rama, amōghaiḥ wonderful, śaraughaiḥ arrows, santarpayiṣyāmi will put an end.

"Listen to this vow of Indra's enemy, which is fully determined and combined with manliness and divinity. I shall put an end to Rama and Lakshmana with my wonderful arrows."
adyēndravaivasvataviṣṇumitrasādhyāścavaiśvānaracandrasūryāḥ .

drakṣyantumēvikramamapramēyaṅviṣṇōrivōgraṅbaliyajñavāṭē ।।6.73.7।।


adya today, indravaivasvataviṣṇumitrasādhyāḥ ca Indra, Vishnu, Mitra, Sadhyas vaiśvānarasūryacaṅdrāḥ Vysvanara, moon, Sun, apramēyam immeasurable, mēvikramam my prowess, baliyajñavāṭē in the place of fire sacrifice of Bali, viṣṇōḥ Vishnu, ugram iva terrible prowess like, drakṣyantu will witness.

"Today, Indra, Vishnu, Mitra, Sadhyas, Vysvanara, moon and Sun will witness my immeasurable prowess as they witnessed the terrible prowess of Vishnu at the fire sacrifice of Bali."
sa ēvamuktvātridaśēndraśatrurāpṛcchayarājānamadīnasattvaḥ .

samārurōhānitulyavēgaṅrathaṅkharaśrēṣṭhasamādhiyuktam ।।6.73.8।।


tridaśēndraśatruḥ enemy of Indra, the ruler of gods, adīnasattvaḥ unshaken in spirit, ēvam in that manner, uktvā having spoken, rājānam to the king, āpṛcchaya taking leave, anilatulyavēgam swift as wind in speed, kharaśrēṣṭhasamādhiyuktam drawn by best of donkeys, ratham chariot, samārurōha ascended.

(Indrajith) having spoken in that manner, taking leave of the king, the enemy of Indra (the ruler of gods), ascended the chariot swift as wind in speed, drawn by the best of donkeys.
tamāsthāyamahātējārathaṅharirathōpamam .

jagāmasahasātatrayatrayuddhamarindamaḥ ।।6.73.9।।


mahātējāḥ highly energetic, arindamaḥ tamer of enemies, harirathōpamam like that of Indra, ratham chariot, tama: he, āsthāya taking seat, yatra there, yuddham battle, tatra there, sahasā quickly, jagāma went.

Highly energetic he (Indrajith) was, a tamer of enemies, seated in the chariot that was like Indra's, quickly went to the battlefield from there.
taṅprasthitaṅmahātmānamanujagmurmahābalāḥ .

samharṣamāṇābahanōdhanuṣpravarapāṇayaḥ ।।6.73.10।।

gajaskandhagatāḥkēcitkēcitpravaravājibhiḥ .

vyāghravṛścikamārjārakharōrōṣṭraiścabhujaṅgamaiḥ ।।6.73.11।।

varāhaiśśvāpadaissiṅhairjambukaiḥparvatōpamaiḥ .

kākahaṅsamayūraiścarākṣasābhīmavikramāḥ ।।6.73.12।।

prāsamudgaranistriṅśaparaśvathagadādharāḥ .

bhuśuṇḍimudgarāyaṣṭiśataghnīparighāyudhā ।।6.73.13।।


mahābalāḥ mighty strong, bhīmavikramāḥ of terrific valour, bahavaḥ many, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, samharṣamāṇā very happy, dhanuḥpravarapāṇayaḥ wielding excellent bows, prāsamudgaranistriṅśaparaśvathagadādharāḥ barbed missiles, hammers whetted axes, maces bhuśaṇḍimudgarā Bhusandi, mallets ṣṭiśataghnīparighāyudhāḥ Ayashtis, Satahgnis and Parighas, prasthitam making noise, mahātmānam great Indrajith, tam they, anujagmuḥ went, kēcit some, gajaskandhagatāḥ back of elephants and horses, kēcit some, pravaravājibhiḥ horses, parvatōpamaiḥ like mountains, vyāghravṛścikamārjārakharōṣṭrai tigers, scorpions, cats, donkeys and camels, bhujaṅgamaiḥ serpents, siṅhaiḥ lions, jambukaiḥ Jackals.

Many Rakshasas of terrific valour, endowed with extraordinary strength, happily, wielding excellent bows, taking barbed missiles, hammers, whetted axes, maces, Bhusandi mallets, Ayasthis, Sataghnis, and Parighas, making noise, went following great Indrajith. Some went on the back of elephants and horses, tigers as large as mountains, scorpions, cats, donkeys, and camels. As well as on serpents, lions, tigers, and jackals.
sa śaṅkhaninadaiḥpūrṇairbhērīṇāṅcāpinissvanaiḥ .

jagāmatridaśēndrāstūyamānōniśācaraiḥ ।।6.73.14।।


saḥ he, tridaśēndrāriḥ enemy of Indra and gods, Indrajith, pūrṇaiḥ fully, śaṅkhaninadaiḥ making noise with blowing conchs, bhērīṇām and drums, nissvanaiḥ making noise, niśācaraiḥ night ranger, tūyamānaḥ praising, jagāma went.

The Rakshasas went on praising the enemy of Indra, Indrajith, making noise, blowing conchs in full blast, beating drums.
sa śaṅkhaśaśivarṇēnachatrēṇaripusūdanaḥ .

rarājapratipūrṇēnanabhaścandramasāyathā ।।6.73.15।।


ripusūdanaḥ destroyer of foes, saḥ he, śaṅkhaśaśivarṇēna white parasol, chatrēṇa parasol, pratipūrṇēna full moon, candramasā moon like, sabhaḥ sky, yathā like that, rarāja shone.

He, the destroyer of foes went with white parasols like a full moon shine in the sky.
avījyatatatōvīrōhaimairhēmavibhūṣitaiḥ .

cārucāmaramukhyaiścamukhyassarvadhanuṣmatām ।।6.73.16।।


tataḥ thereafter, hēmavibhūṣitaiḥ decked with gold ornaments, sarvadhanuṣmatām archers, mukhyaḥ chief, vīraḥ hero, haimaiḥ gold, cārucāmaramukhyaiḥ whisks with golden handles, avījyata fanning.

Thereafter the chief hero went decked with golden ornaments, fanned by archers holding whisks with gold handles.
sa tudṛṣṭavāviniryāntaṅbalēnamahātāvṛtam .

rākṣasādhipatiśraśīmān rāvaṇaḥputramabravīt ।।6.73.17।।


rākṣasādhipatiḥ Rakshasa king, śrīmān prosperous, saḥ he, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, mahatā huge, balēna army, vṛtam surrounded by, viniryāntam sallying forth, taṅputram his son, dṛṣṭavā seeing, abravīt spoke.

Ravana, the prosperous king of Rakshasas, seeing his son sallying forth surrounded by huge army spoke.
tvamapratirathaḥputratvayāvaivāsavōjitaḥ .

kimpunarmānuṣaṅdhṛṣyaṅnihaniṣyasirāghavam ।।6.73.18।।

tathōktōrākṣasēndrēṇapratyagṛhṇānmahāśiṣaḥ .


putra son, tvam you, apratirathaḥ an adversary in fighting sitting in a war chariot, tvayā by you, vāsavaḥ Indra, jitaḥ won, mānuṣam mortals, dhṛṣyam to assail, rāghavam Raghava, nihaniṣyasi killing, kim punaḥ why to speak again, rākṣasēndrēṇa Rakshasa king, tathā that way, uktaḥ spoke, mahāśiṣaḥ mighty blessings, pratyagṛhṇāt accepted.

"Son! there is no adversary who can fight with you sitting in a chariot. Indra has been won by you. What to say about mortals like Rama who can be assailed by you."Rakshasa king having spoken that way, Indrajith accepted the blessings and departed.
tastvindrajitālaṅkāsūryapratimatējasā ।।6.73.19।।

rarājāprativīryēṇadyaurivārkēṇabhāsvatā .


tataḥ then, sūryapratimatējasā effulgent like the Sun, aprativīryēṇa matchless in valour, indrajitā Indrajith, laṅkā Lanka, bhāsvatā shone, arkēṇa by Sun, dyauḥiva like sky, rarāja shone.

Then Lanka shone like the Sun in the sky with Indrajith who was effulgent like the Sun and matchless in valour shone.
samprāpyamahātējāyuddhabhūmimarindamaḥ ।।6.73.20।।

sthāpayāmāsarakṣāṅsirathaṅpratisamantataḥ .


mahātējāḥ very energetic, arindamaḥ tamer of foes, saḥ he, yuddhabhūmim battlefield, samprāpya reaching, rakṣāṅsi Rakshasa, rathaṅpratisamantataḥ ranged around the chariot, sthāpayāmāsa looked around the chariot.

Upon reaching the battlefield, he, the tamer of foes, highly energetic Indrajith, ranged the Rakshasas around the chariot.
tatastuhutabhōktāraṅhutabhuksadṛśaprabhaḥ ।।6.73.21।।

juhāvarākṣasaśrēṣṭhōmantravadvidhivattadā .


tataḥ then, hutabhuksadṛśaprabhaḥ equal to fire in brilliance, rākṣasaśrēṣṭhaḥ foremost of the Rakshasas, mantrasattamaiḥ best of mantras, hutabhōktāram fire god, mantravat with mantras, vidhivat as per tradition, tadā then, juhava worshipped.

Then the foremost of Rakshasas, who was like fire god in brilliance worshipped fire god with chanting of mantras as per tradition.
sahavirlājasaṅskārairmālyagandhapuraskṛtaiḥ ।।6.73.22।।

juhuvēpāvakaṅtatrarākṣanēndraḥpratāpavān .


pratāpavān heroic, saḥ he, rākṣasēndraḥ Rakshasa king, mālyagandhapuraskṛtaiḥ with flowers and fragrance, havirlājasaṅskāraiḥ with parched grain, tatra then, pāvakam fire, juhuvē worshipped.

The heroic Rakshasa king worshipped according to tradition with flowers and fragrance followed by parched grain and fire god.
śastrāṇiśarapatrāṇisamidhō.thavibhītakāḥ ।।6.73.23।।

lōhitāni ca vāsāṅsisruvaṅkārṣṇāyasaṅtathā .


strāṇi reed, śarapatrāṇi weapons as leaves, atha and, vibhītakāḥ bibitika, samidhaḥ sticks, lōtāni red coloured, vāsāṅsi ca cloth, tathā same way, kārṣṇāyasam ladle made of black iron, sruvam to spread.

In that fire sacrifice, weapons were leaves, bibika sticks were fuel, red pieces of cloth were used, and in the same way the ladle for sacrifice was made of iron.
satatrāgniṅsamāstīryaśarapatraissatōmaraiḥ ।।6.73.24।।

chāgasyakṛṣṇavarṇasyagaḷaṅjagrāhajīvataḥ .


saḥ he, tatra there, satōmaraiḥ lances, śarapatraiḥ leaves in the form of weapons, agnim into fire, samāstīrya consigning, kṛṣṇavarṇasya dark coloured, jīvataḥ live, chāgasya goat, gaḷam neck, jagrāha clasped.

There he strewed into the fire, lances as leaves, dark coloured live go at clasped by its neck and consigned.
sakṛdēvasamiddhasyavidhūmasyamahārciṣaḥ ।।6.73.25।।

babhūvustāniliṅgānivijayaṅyānyadarśayan .


sakṛdēva from the fire set ablaze, samiddhasya fire sticks, vidhūmasya free from smoke, mahārciṣaḥ burst into flames, yāni those, vijayam victory, adarśayan indicating, tāni those, liṅgāni mark of, babhūvuḥ appeared.

From the fire set ablaze by the of fearing of fire sticks into it was free from smoke burst into flames indicating victory.
pradakṣiṇāvartaśikhastaptakāñcanabhūṣaṇaḥ ।।6.72.26।।

havistatpratijagrāhapāvakassvayamāsthitaḥ .


taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇaḥ ornaments of polished gold, pāvakaḥ fire, svayam itself, asthitaḥ accepted, pradakṣiṇāvartaśikhaḥ turned round towards, tat that, haviḥ fire, pratijagrāha in turn.

The fire god himself, decked in polished gold ornaments turned round and accepted the offerings.
sō.stramāhārayāmāsabrāhmamindraripustadā ।।6.73.27।।

dhanuścātmarathaṅcaivasarvaṅtatrābhyamantrayat .


astraripuḥ enemy of weapons, saḥ he, brāhmam Brahma's, indram weapon, āhārayāmāsa invoked, tatra there, dhanuśca bow, ātmarathaṅcaiva his own chariot also, sarvam all, abhyamantrayat charged with invocation of Brahma.

He, with whom weapons are adept invoked weapon presided over by Brahma and charged his own chariot with it.
tasminnāhūyamānēstrēhūyamānē ca pāvakē ।।6.73.28।।

sārdhaṅgrahēndunakṣatrairvitatrāsanabhasthsalam .


tasmin while, astrē missile, āhūyamānē invoking, pāvakē fire god, hūyamānē ca doing fire sacrifice, sārdhaṅgrahēndunakṣatrai all planets, moon, Sun and Stars, nabhasthsalam in the sky, vitatrāsa shook in fear.

While the missile was being invoked and fire sacrifice was done, all planets, moon, Sun, and Stars in the sky shook in fear.
sa pāvakaṅpāvakadīptatējāhutvāmahēndrapratimaprabhāvaḥ .

sa cāpabāṇāsirathāśvasūtaḥkhē.ntardadhē.tmānamacintyarūpaḥ ।।6.73.29।।


pāvakadīptatējāḥ flaming like fire god, mahēndrapratimaprabhāvaḥ endowed with the prowess of Indra, acintyarūpaḥ of inconceivable form, saḥ he, sacāpabāṇāsirathāśvasūtaḥ with bow, arrows and chariot, khē into the sky, ātmānam himself, antardadhē disappeared.

Flaming like fire god, endowed with the prowess of Indra, possessing inconceivable form, Indrajith with his bow, arrows and chariot disappeared into the sky.
tatōhayarathākīrṇaṅpatākādhvajaśōbhitam .

niryayaurākṣasabalaṅnardamānaṅyayutsayā ।।6.73.30।।


tataḥ then, hayarathākīrṇam filled with horses and chariot, patākādhvajaśōbhitam graced with pennants and flags, rākṣasabalam Rakshasa army, yayutsayā desiring to fight, nardamānam roaring aloud, niryayau went.

Then, the Rakshasa army filled with horses and chariots, graced with pennants and flags, desiring to fight went roaring aloud.
tēśarairbahubhiścitraistīkṣṇavēgairalaṅkṛtaiḥ .

tōmarairaṅkuśaiścāpivānarān jaghnurāhavē ।।6.73.31।।


tē they, āhavē began, citraiḥ wonderful, tīkṣṇavēgaiḥ sharp and swift, alaṅkṛtaiḥ decorated, bahubhiḥ many, śaraiḥ arrows, tōmaraiḥ lances, aṅkuśaiścāpi tridents also, vānarān Vanaras, jaghnuḥ to strike.

They began to strike Vanaras, with many wonderfully decorated, sharp and swift arrows, lances, and tridents.
rāvaṇistutatassaṅkṛddhastānnirīkṣyaniśācarān .

hṛṣṭābhavantōyudhyantuvānarāṇāṅjighāṅsayā ।।6.73.32।।


tataḥ thereafter, saṅkṛddhaḥ enraged, rāvaṇiḥtu at Ravana's son, tān him, niśācarān night ranger, nirīkṣya looking at, bhavantaḥ you, hṛṣṭāḥ happily, vānarāṇām with Vanaras, jighāṅsayā kill, yudhyantu fight.

Thereafter enraged Ravana's son looking at the Rakshasas said, "Be happy and kill the Vanaras in fight."
tatastērākṣasāssarvēnardhantōjayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ .

abhyavarṣaṅstatōghōrānvānarān śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ ।।6.73.33।।


tataḥ then, sarvē all, tērākṣasāḥ those Rakshasas, garjantaḥ roaring, jayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ longing for victory, tataḥ then, śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ rained arrows, ghōran terrific manner, vānarān at Vanaras, abhyavarṣan rained.

Thereafter the Rakshasas roaring and longing for victory rained arrows in a terrific manner at the Vanaras.
sa tunālīkanārācairgadābhirmusalairapi .

rakṣōbhissamvṛtassaṅkhyēvānarān vicakarta ha ।।6.73.34।।


sa tu they, saṅkhyē in fight, rakṣōbhiḥ concealed, samvṛtaḥ surrounded by, nālikanārācaiḥ nalikas, gadābhiḥ maces, musalairapi steel arrows, vānarān at Vanaras, vicakarta ha destroy.

Indrajith, remaining concealed and surrounded by Rakshasas, destroyed the Vanaras with nalikas, steel arrows and maces.
tēvadhyamānāssamarēvānarāḥpādapāyudhāḥ .

abhyavarṣantasahasārāvaṇiṅśailapādapaiḥ ।।6.73.35।।


samarē in battle, vadhyamānāḥ struck, pādapāyudhāḥ armed with trees, tē they, vānarāḥ Vanaras, sahasā suddenly, śailapādapaiḥ rocks and trees, rāvaṇim Indrajith, abhyavarṣanta rained heavily.

Struck in the battle by Indrajith, the Vanaras rained heavily armed with trees and rocks.
indrajittutadākruddhōmahātējāmahābalaḥ .

vānarāṇāṅśarīrāṇivyadhamadrāvaṇātmajaḥ ।।6.73.36।।


mahātējāḥ energetic, mahābalaḥ mighty, rāvaṇātmajaḥ Ravana's son, indrajittu Indrajith, tadā then, kruddhaḥ became angry, vānarāṇām at Vanaras, śarīrāṇi body, vyadhamat attacked.

Mighty and energetic son of Ravana, Indrajith became angry and began to attack the Vanaras.
śarēṇaikēna ca harīnnavapañca ca sapta ca .

bibhēdasamarēkruddhōrākṣasān saṅpraharṣayan ।।6.73.37।।


kruddhaḥ angry, samarē in battlefield, rākṣasān Rakshasas, saṅpraharṣayan rejoiced, ēkēna alone, śarēṇa with arrows, nnava nine, pañca five, sapta ca and seven, harīn Vanaras, bibhēda tore into pieces.

Filled with anger, Indrajith alone with nine, five, seven arrows tore the Vanaras into pieces.
sa śaraissūryasaṅkāśaiśśātakumbhavibhūṣitaiḥ .

vānarān samarēvīraḥpramamāthasudurjayaḥ ।।6.73.38।।


sudurjayaḥ who is difficult to conquer, saḥvīraḥ that hero, samarē in battle, sūryasaṅkāśaiḥ like the Sun, śātakumbhavibhūṣitaiḥ decorated with gold, śaraiḥ arrows, vānarān Vanaras, pramamātha killed.

Hero Indrajith, who is difficult to conquer in battle, killed the Vanaras with sun like arrows decorated with gold.
tēbhinnagātrāssamarēvānarāśśarapīḍitāḥ .

pēturmathitasaṅkalpāssurairivamahāsurāḥ ।।6.73.39।।


samarē in battle, śarapīḍitāḥ pierced by arrows, tēvānarāḥ those Vanaras, bhinnagātrāḥ necks broken, suraiḥ by asuras, mahāsurāḥiva like great suras, mathitasaṅkalpāḥ frustrated in mind, pētuḥ fallen.

Pierced by arrows in the battle, those Vanaras with their necks broken, giving up hopes of winning, frustrated, fell like the demons oppressed by great gods.
taṅtapantamivādityaṅghōrairbāṇagabhastibhiḥ .

abhyadhāvantasaṅkṛddhāssamyugēvānararṣabhāḥ ।।6.73.40।।


tē they, vānararṣabhāḥ bulls among Vanaras, samyugē in battle, ghōraiḥ dreadful, bāṇagabhastibhiḥ arrows like Sun 's rays, tapantam blazing, ādityam iva like the Sun's rays, saṅkṛddhā highly enraged, abhyadhāvanta rushed.

Then the bulls among Vanaras rushed in the battlefield towards Indrajith whose arrows were dreadful and blazing like the Sun 's rays.
tatastuvānarāssarvēbhinnadēhāvicētasaḥ .

vyathitāvidravantismarudhirēṇasamukṣitāḥ ।।6.73.41।।


tataḥ then, sarvē all, vānarāḥ Vanaras, bhinnadēhāḥ broken bodies, vicētasaḥ lost consciousness, vyathitāḥ lost courage, rudhirēṇa by blood, samukṣitāḥ mutilated, vidravantisma flowed.

Then Vanaras with their bodies broken, courage and consciousness lost, blood flowed from mutilated bodies.
rāmasyārthēparākramyavānarāstyaktajīvitāḥ .

nardantastē.bhivṛttāstusamarēsaśilāyudhāḥ ।।6.73.42।।


tēvānarāḥ those Vanaras, samarē in battle, saśilāyudhāḥ armed with rocks, nardantaḥ roaring, abhivṛttāḥ not turning back, arthē for the cause, parākramya by their valour, tyaktajīvitāḥ giving up life.

Vanaras, armed with rocks in the battle, roaring and not turning back, stood for the cause, giving up their life.
tēdrumaiḥparvatāgraiścaśilābhiścaplavaṅgamāḥ .

abhyavarṣantasamarērāvaṇiṅparyavasthitāḥ ।।6.73.43।।


tēplavaṅgamāḥ those Vanaras, samarē in battle, paryavasthitāḥ retraced back, rāvaṇim Ravana's son, drumaiḥ trees, paryatāgraiśca peaks of mountains, śilābhiśca and rocks, abhyavarṣanta rained again.

The Vanaras retreated back to the battle and rained on Ravana's son, trees, mountains and rocks.
tadrumāṇāṅśilānāṅ ca varṣaṅprāṇaharaṅmahat .

vyapōhatamahātējārāvaṇissamitiṅjayaḥ ।।6.73.44।।


mahātējāḥ energetic, samitiñjayaḥ ever victorious in war, rāvaṇiḥ Indrajith, drumāṇām trees, śilānāṅ ca and at rocks, prāṇaharam that which can take out life, mahat deadly, taṅvarṣam rain, vyapōhata dispersed.

Energetic Indrajith, who is ever victorious in battle dispersed the deadly rain of rocks and trees capable of taking out life.
tataḥpāvakasaṅkāśaiśśarairāśīviṣōpamaiḥ .

vānarāṇāmanīkānibibhēdasamarēprabhuḥ ।।6.73.45।।


tataḥ then, prabhuḥ Lord, samarē in battle, pāvakasaṅkāśaiḥ burning like fire, āśīviṣōpamaiḥ like venomous serpents, śaraiḥ arrows, vānarāṇām on Vanaras, anīkāni complete army, bibhēda shattered.

Then the Lord of Rakshasas dispersed the complete army of Vanaras with arrows burning like fire and resembling venomous serpents.
aṣṭādaśaśaraistīkṣṇaissavidadvāgandhamādanam .

vivyāthanavabhiścaivanalaṅdūrādavasthitam ।।6.73.46।।


saḥ he, tikṣṇai very sharp, aṣṭādaśaśaraiḥ eighteen, gandhamādanam Gandhamadana, viddhvā shattered, dūrāt far away, avasthitam standing, nalam Nala also, navabhiḥ nine, vivyātha shattered.

He shattered Gandhamadana with eighteen very sharp arrows and Nala standing at far with nine arrows.
saptabhistumahāvīryōmaindaṅmarmavidāraṇaiḥ .

pañcabhirviśikhaiścaivagajaṅvivyāthasaṅyugē ।।6.73.47।।


mahāvīryaḥ eminent hero, marmavidāraṇaiḥ private parts, saptabhiḥ seven, maindam Mainda, pañcabhiḥ five, viśikhaiḥ by spade, gajaṅcaiva even Gaja, saṅyugē in battle, vivyātha afflicted.

Indrajith, the eminent hero, hurt Mainda in private parts and even afflicted Gaja with five spades in the battle.
jāmbavantaṅtudaśabhirnīlaṅtriṅśadbhirēva ca .

sugrīvamṛṣabhaṅcaivasō.ṅgadaṅdvividhaṅtathā ।।6.73.48।।

ghōrairdattavaraistīkṣṇairniṣprāṇānakarōttadā .


tadā then, saḥ he, jāmbavantam Jambavantha, daśabhiḥ ten, nīlam Neela, triṅśadbhirēva ca thirty, sugrīvam Sugriva, ṛṣabhaṅcaiva and Rshaba, aṅgadam Angada, tathā in the same way, dvividam Dwivida, dattavaraiḥ con fired with boons, ghōraiḥ terrific, tīkṣṇaiḥ sharp, niṣprāṇān lose consciousness, akarōt did.

Then he struck Jambavan with ten, Neela with thirty, and Sugriva, Rshaba and Angada. In the same way Dwivida with sharp and terrific arrows that were bestowed upon him as boons and made them lose consciousness.
anyānapitadāmukhyānvānarān bahubhiśśaraiḥ ।।6.73.49।।

ardayāmāsasaṅkṛddhaḥkālānagirivamūrchitaḥ .


saṅkṛddhaḥ highly enraged, mūrchitaḥ lost senses, kālānagiriva like fire at the time of destruction, bahubhiḥ many, śaraiḥ arrows, tadā then, mukhyān chief, anyān others, vānarānapi Vanaras also, ardayāmāsa tormented.

Highly enraged like the fire at the time of universal destruction, he tormented many chiefs of Vanaras and others.
saśaraissūryasaṅkāśaissumuksaiśaśīghragāmibhiḥ ।।6.73.50।।

vānarāṇāmanīkāninirmamanthamahāraṇē .


saḥ he, sūryasaṅkāśaiḥ like the Sun, sumuksaiḥ stretching to the ear, śīghragāmibhiḥ swift moving, śaraiḥ arrows, mahāraṇē in the great war, vānarāṇām at Vanaras, anīkāni many, nirmamantha hurt.

He, with his swift moving arrows, bright like the Sun , stretching to the ear hurt many vanaras in that great war.
ākulāṅvānarīṅsēnāṅśarajālēnamōhitām ।।6.73.51।।

hṛṣṭassaparayāprītyādadarśakṣatajōkṣitām .


hṛṣṭaḥ happy, saḥ he, śarajālēna net of arrows, mōhitām deluded, kṣatajōkṣitām lost senses, ākulām vast, vānarīm Vanaras, sēvān army, parayā very, prītyā happy, dadarśa appeared.

Seeing the vast Vanara army deluded by the net of arrows, Indrajith was very happy.
vānarēvamahātējārākṣasēndrātmajōbalī ।।6.73.52।।

saṅsṛjyabāṇavarṣaṅ ca śastravarṣaṅ ca dāruṇam .

mamardavānarānīkamindrajittvaritōbalī ।।6.73.53।।


mahātējāḥ highly energetic, balī strong, rākṣasēndrātmajaḥ Rakshasa king's son, purēva swift, dāruṇam dreadful, bāṇavarṣaṅ ca rain of arrows, śastravarṣaṅ ca and shower of weapons, saṅsṛjya dropping, balī mighty, indrajit Indrajith, tvaritaḥ swiftly, vānarānīkam Vanara army, mamarda devastated.

Highly energetic, mighty, and swift Indrajith raining sharp arrows and weapons quickly Devastated the Vanara army.
svasainyamutsṛjyasamētyatūrṇaṅmahāraṇēvānaravāhinīṣu .

adṛśyamānaśśarajālamugraṅvavarṣanīlāmbudharōyathāmbu ।।6.73.54।।


svasainyam his own army, utsṛjya leaving, tūrṇam moving swiftly, mahāraṇē great battle, samētya staying, adṛśyamānaḥ concealed, vānaravāhinīṣu from Vanara army, ugram sharp, śarajālam arrows of net, nīlāmbudharaḥ from the blue sky, ambuyathā like rainy cloud, vavarṣa rained.

Leaving from his own army space, moving swiftly, remaining concealed in the blue sky like a rain cloud, Indrajith rained a net of arrows.
tēśakrajidbāṇaviśīrṇadēhāmāyāhatāvisvaramunnadantaḥ .

raṇēnipēturharayō.drikalpāyathēndravajrābhihatānagēndrāḥ ।।6.73.55।।


raṇē in battle, śakrajidbāṇaviśīrṇadēhāḥ struck by Indrajith, bodies broken to pieces, māyāhatāḥ victims of cheating, adrikalpāḥ like mountains, tē they, harayaḥ Vanaras, visvaram discordant tones, unnadantaḥ shrieking, indravajrābhihatāḥ hit by Indra's thunderbolt, nagēndrāḥyathā mountains like, nipētuḥ fell.

In the battle, the Vanaras who were like mountains, became victims of cheating, and were struck by Indrajith's thunderbolt like arrows. Their bodies were broken and shrieking in discordant tones they fell like mountains.
tēkēvalaṅsandadṛśuśaśitāgrānbāṇānraṇēvānaravāhinīṣu .

māyānigūḍhaṅtusurēndraśatruṅ na cāvṛtaṅrākṣasamabhyapaśyan ।।6.73.56।।


raṇē in war, tē they, vānaravāhinīṣu only Vanara troops, kēvalam alone, sitāgrān sharp pointed, bāṇān arrows, sandadṛśuḥ saw, āvṛtam covering them, māyāvigūḍham magical power, surēndraśatrum enemy of Indra, taṅrākṣasam api those Rakshasas also, na apaśyan not seen.

The Vanara troops saw only the sharp pointed arrows covering them. They could not see the enemy of Indra being concealed by magical power.
tatassarakṣōdhipatirmahātmāsarvādiśōbāṇagaṇaiśaśitāgraiḥ .

pracchādayāmāsaraviprakāśairvipādayāmāsa ca vānarēndrān ।।6.73.57।।


tataḥ thereafter, rakṣōdhipatiḥ Rakshasa Lord, mahātmā great self, saḥ he, śitāgraiḥ sharp tipped, raviprakāśaiḥ bright like the Sun, bāṇagaṇaiḥ volleys of arrows, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ sides, pracchādayāmāsa despatched, vānarēndrān Vanara leaders, vipādayāmāsa ca eradicated.

Thereafter the mighty Lord of Rakshasas despatched volley of sharp tipped arrows bright like the Sun, at Vanara leaders on all sides and eradicated.
sa śūlanistriṅśaparaśvadhānivyāvidhyadīptānalasannibhāni .

savisphuliṅgōjjvalapāvakānivavarṣatīvraṅplavagēndrasainyē ।।6.73.58।।


saḥ he, vyāvidhyadīptānilasannibhāni glowing like fire sacrifice, savisphuliṅgōjjvalapāvakāni flames with sparks of fire, śūlanistriṅśaparaśvadhānitridents, swords and axes, tīvram violent, plavagēndrasainyē Vanara army, vavarṣa rained.

He rained a violent shower of tridents, swords and axes burning like sacrificial fire shedding flames with fire sparks on the Vanara army.
tatōjvalanasaṅkāśaiśśarairvānarayūthapāḥ .

tāḍitāśśakrajidbāṇaiḥpraphullāivakiṅśukāḥ ।।6.73.59।।


tataḥ then, jvalanasaṅkāśaiḥ glowing like, śaraiḥ arrows, śakrajidbhāṇaiḥ by Indrajith's arrows, tāḍitāḥ struck, vānarayūthapāḥ Vanara troops, praphullāḥ bearing flowers, kiṅśukāḥiva like Kimsuka trees.

Struck by Indrajith's arrows, the (bodies of) Vanara troops were glowing like Kimsuka trees (red in colour) bearing flowers.
tēnyōnyamabhisarpantōninadantaścavisvaram .

rākṣasēndrāstranirbhinnānipēturvānararṣabhāḥ ।।6.73.60।।


rākṣasēndrābhinirbhinnāḥ hit by the king of Rakshasas one over the other, tē they, vānararṣabhāḥ bulls among Vanaras, anyōnyam one another, abhisarpantaḥ gliding towards, visvaram discordant tones, ninadantaśca roared, nipētuḥ fell down.

Hit by the Rakshasa king, the bulls among Vanaras gliding towards one another roared in discordant tones and fell down.
udīkṣamāṇāgaganaṅkēcinnētrēṣutāḍitāḥ .

śarairviviśuranyōnyaṅpētuścajagatītalē ।।6.73.61।।


gaganam sky, udīkṣamāṇāḥ looking up, kēcit some, śaraiḥ arrows, nētrēṣu in the eyes, tāḍitāḥ pierced, anyōnyam one another, viviśuḥ holding, jagatītalē on the ground, pētuśca fell.

Some Vanaras looking up to the sky eyes pierced with arrows held one another and fell on the ground.
hanūmantaṅ ca sugrīvamaṅgadaṅgandhamādanam .

jāmbavantaṅsuṣēṇaṅ ca vēgadarśinamēva ca ।।6.73.62।।

maindaṅ ca dvividaṅnīlaṅgavākṣaṅgajagōmubhau .

kēsariṅharilōmānaṅvidyuddhaṅṣṭraṅ ca vānaram ।।6.73.63।।

sūryānanaṅjyōtimukhaṅtathādadhimukhaṅharim .

rākṣasōttamaḥ foremost of Rakshasas, indrajit Indrajith, hanūmantaṅ ca at Hanuman, sugrīvam Sugriva, aṅgadam Angada, gandhamādanam Gandhamadanam, jāmbavantam Jambavantha, suṣēṇaṅca Sushenu, vēgadarśinamēva ca Vegadarsi, maindaṅ ca and Mainda, dvividam Dwivida, nīlam Neela, gavākṣam Gavaksha, vidyuddaṅṣṭram Vidyuddhamshtra, vānaraṅca Vanaras, sūryānanam Suryanana, jyōtimukham Jyothimukha, tathā that way, dadhimukham Dadhimukha, harim monkeys, pāvakākṣam Pavakasha, naḷaṅcaiva Nala also, kumudam Kumuda, vānaraṅcaiva Vanaras, sarvān all, tān of them, hariśārdūlān tigers among Vanaras, mantrasamhitaiḥ charged with mantras, prāssaiḥ lances, śūlaiḥ tridents, śitaiḥ sharp, bāṇaiḥ arrows, vivyādha pierced.

Indrajith, the foremost of the Rakshasas, with lances, tridents, sharp arrows charged with mantras pierced at all the tigers among Vanaras --Hanuman, Sugriva, Angada, Gandhamadanam, Jambavantha, Sushena, Vegadarsi, Mainda, Dwivida, Neela, Gavaksha, Vidyuuhamshtra, and monkeys Suryanana, Jyothimukha, Dadhimukha, Pavaksha, and also Nala, Kumuda.
sa vaigadābhirhariyūthamukhyānnirbhidyabāṇaistapanīyavaṅkhaiḥ .

vavarṣarāmaṅśaravṛṣṭijālaissalakṣmaṇaṅbhāskararamaśikalpaiḥ ।।6.73.66।।


saḥ he, gadābhiḥ maces, tapanīyavaṅkhaiḥ arrows shining with golden colour, bāṇaiḥ arrows, hariyūthamukhyān leaders of Vanara troops, nirbhidya wounded, salakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, rāmam Rama, bhāskararamaśikalpaiḥ shining like Sun 's rays, śaravṛṣṭijālaiḥ volley of arrows, vavarṣa rained.

Having hurt the Vanara leaders with maces and arrows shining like gold, he rained volley of arrows shining like sun rays on Lakshmana and Rama.
sa bāṇavarṣairabhivṛṣyamāṇōdhārānipātānivatānacnitya .

samīkṣamāṇaḥparamādbhutaśrīrāmatadālakṣmaṇamityuvāca ।।6.73.67।।


paramādbhutaśrīḥ most wonderful and prosperous, saḥrāmaḥ that Rama, bāṇavarṣaiḥ rain of arrows, abhivarṣyamāṇaḥ while continuing to rain, tān them, dhārānipātānina like rain of water drops, acnitya not minding, samīkṣamāṇaḥ was looking at, tataḥ that, lakṣmaṇam Lakshman, iti this, uvāca spoke.

Most wonderful and prosperous Rama, looking at the rain of arrows continuing to shower, not minding it as if they are rain of water drops, spoke this to Lakshmana.
asaupunarlakṣmaṇarākṣasēndrōbrahmāstramāśrityasurēndraśatruḥ .

nipātayitvāharisainyamugramasmānśarairardayatiprasaktaḥ ।।6.73.68।।


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, rākṣasēndraḥ Rakshasa king, asau that, surēndraśatruḥ enemy of Indra, brahmāstram Brahmastram, āśritya secured, harisainyam Vanara army, nipātayitvā having pained, asmān by that, śitaiḥ sharp, śaraiḥ arrows, prasaktam using that power, ardayati tormenting.

"Lakshmana! Rakshasa king, an enemy of Indra afflicted the Vanaras with the Brahmastram secured by him. Using that power, he is tormenting us with sharp arrows."
svayambhuvādattavarōmahātmā .

samāhitōntarhitabhīmakāyaḥ .

kathaṅnuśakyōyudhinaṣṭadēhōnihantumadyēndrajidudyatāstraḥ ।।6.73.69।।


svayambhūvā creator, dattavaraḥ who is conferred with boon of invincibility, mahātmāna great, samāhitaḥ steadfast, antarhitabhīmakāyaḥ concealed in dreadful form, yudhi in combat, naṣṭadēhaḥ body not visible, udyatāstraḥ with weapons uplifted, indrajit Indrajith, adya now, nihantum to destroy, katham how can it be, śakyaḥ possible.

"How can it be possible now to destroy that great Indrajith who is conferred with boons of invincibility by the creator Brahma, who is steadfast and is concealed in dreadful form with weapons uplifted?"
manyēsvayambhurbhagavānacnityōyasyaitadastraṅprabhavaścayō.sya .

bāṇāvapātāstvamihādyadhīmanmayāsahāvyagramanāssahasva ।।6.73.70।।


ētat this, astram weapon, yasya his, yaḥ that which, asya whose, prabhavaḥ glorious, bhagavān god, svayambhuḥ creator, acnityaḥ inconceivable, manyē remain calm, dhīman wise, tvam you, iha here, adya now, avyagramanāḥ undisturbed, bāṇāvapātam hail of arrows, mayāsaha with me, sahasva tolerate.

"This weapon of him (Indrajith) is that of the glorious creator and is presided by Him. By that reason he is inconceivable. O! Wise Lakshmana, remain calm and undisturbed at this hail of arrows."
pracchādayatyēṣahirākṣasēndrassarvādhiśassāyakavṛṣṭijālaiḥ .

ētaccasarvaṅpatitāgyraśūraṅ na bhrājatēvānararājasainyam।। 6.73.71।।


sarvādhikaḥ all sides, ēṣaḥ in that way, rākṣasēndraḥ Rakshasa king, sāyakavṛṣṭijālaiḥ with volley of arrows, pracchādayatu covering thickly, patitāgyraśūram able warriors falling, ētat this, sarvam all, vānararājasainyam Vanara king's army, ca bhrājatē not shining.

"This Rakshasa king is covered thickly with volley of arrows on all sides. Able warriors of Vanaras are falling and not happy."
āvāṅtudṛṣṭavāpatitauvisaṅjñaunivṛttayuddaugatarōṣaharṣē .

dhruvaṅpravēkṣyatyamarārivāsamasausamādāyaraṇāgralakṣmīm ।।6.73.72।।


asau to us, nivṛttayuddhau desisted from combat, gatarōṣaharṣē lost pride and happiness, visaṅjñau lost consciousness, patitau fallen, āvām both of us, dṛṣṭavā seeing, raṇāgyralakṣmīm attained prosperity after war, samādāya come, dhruvam surely, amarārivāsam abode of enemies of gods, pravēkṣyati will enter.

"This Indrajith is desisting from comb at on seeing us. As the Vanaras have lost pride and happiness and fallen into unconscious state, he would surely think that he has attained prosperity after victory in war and surely enter Lanka, the abode of enemies of god."
tatastutāvindrajidastrajālairbhabhūvatustatratathāviśastau .

sa cāpitautatravidarśayitvānanādaharṣādyudhirākṣasēndraḥ ।।6.73.73।।


tataḥ then, tau the two, indrajitaḥ Indrajith, astrajālaiḥ net of arrows, tatrathere, tathā that way, viśastau fallen down, babhūvatuḥ severed, saḥ he, rākṣasēndraścāpi even the Rakshasa king, tatra there, tau the two, vidarśayitvā seeing them, yudhi battle, harṣāt happy, nanāda roared.

Seeing the two princes severed and fallen down struck by the net of arrows of Indrajith, he roared happily in the battle.
satattadāvānarasainyamēvaṅrāmaṅ ca saṅkhyēsahalakṣmaṇēna .

viṣādayitvāsahasāvivēśapurīṅdaśagrīvabhujābhiguptām ।।6.73.74।।

sanstūyamānassatuyātudhānaiḥ .

patrē ca sarvaṅhṛṣitō.bhyuvāca ।।6.73.75।।


tataḥ thereafter, saḥ he, tadā then, vānarasainyam Vanara army, lakṣmaṇēnasaha accompanied by Lakshmana, rāmaṅ ca and Rama, saṅkhyē from the battle, ēvam in that way, viṣādayitvā withdrew, yātudhānaiḥ moved to abode, saṅstūyamānaḥ while being praised, daśagrīvabhujābhiguptām protected by Ravana's arms, purīm city, sahasā at once, vivēśa entered, hṛṣṭitaḥ happily, sarvam all, pitrē to father, abhvuvāda related.

Thereafter Vanara army withdrew from the battle along with Rama and Lakshmana. Indrajith for his part moved to the abode protected by Ravana's arms, while being praised. He at once entered the city happily and related everything to the father.
