Sloka & Translation

[Instructed by Jambavan, Hanuman goes to Himalayas, gets the herbs along with the hillock. Inhaling the fragrance of the herbs Rama and Lakshmana regain their senses. The Vanaras lying unconscious, are healed by the fragrance, relieved of pain and awakened.]

tayōstadāsāditayōraṇāgrēmumōhasainyaṅharipuṅgavānām .

sugrīvanīlāṅgadajāmbavantō na cāpikiñcitpratipēdirētē ।।6.74.1।।


raṇāgrē in the forefront of the battle, tadā then, tayōḥ both, sāditayōḥ unconscious, haripuṅgavānām monkey leaders, sainyam army, mumōha lost senses, tē they, sugrīvanīlāṅgadajāmbavantō.pi Sugriva, Neela, Angada and Jambavantha, kiñcit indeed, na pratipēdirē not known what to do.

The two brothers (Rama and Lakshmana) become unconscious in the forefront of the battle; the monkey leaders lose senses. Sugriva, Neela, Angada and Jambavantha did not know What to do.
tatōviṣaṇṇaṅsamavēkṣyasainyaṅvibhīṣaṇōbuddhimatāṅvariṣṭhaḥ .

uvācaśākhamṛgarājavīrānāśvāsayannapratimairvacōbhiḥ ।।6.74.2।।


tataḥ thereafter, buddhimatām wise, variṣṭhaḥ foremost, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, viṣaṇṇam despondent, sainyam army, samavēkṣya observing, apratimaiḥ incomparable, vacōbhiḥ words, śākhāmṛgarājavīrān the monkey leaders, āśvāsayan reassuring, uvāca spoke.

Thereafter, foremost among the wise, Vibheeshana observing the despondency of the monkey leaders spoke to them reassuring in incomparable words.
mābhaiṣṭanāstyatraviṣādakālōyadāryaputtrauvivaśauviṣaṇṇau .

svayambhuvōvākyamathōdvahantauyatsāditāvindrajidastrajālaiḥ ।।6.74.3।।


āryaputrau noble men, svayambhuvaḥ creator, vākyam statement, udvahantau to honour, atha now, indrajit Indrajith, astrajālaiḥ network of arrows, yat that which, sāditau helpless, yat that, avaśau lost senses, viṣaṇṇau despondent, mābhaiṣṭa you need not fear, tatrathere, viṣādakālaḥ sorrowful, nāsti not.

"O Noble men! Do not fear. Rama and Lakshmana are afflicted by Indrajith's volley of arrows and have lost senses. They are despondent to honour the statement of the creator not otherwise."
tasmaitudattaṅparamāstramētatsvayambhuvābrāhmamamōghavēgam .

tanmānayantauyudhirājaputraunipātitaukō.traviṣādakālaḥ ।।6.74.4।।


tasmai to him, ētat this, amōghavēgam terrific speed, brāhmaṅparamāstram Brahma's weapon, svayambhuvā creator, dattam conferred, tat that, mānayantau to respect, rājaputrau the princes, yudhi in battle, nipātitau fallen, atra there, viṣādakālaḥ to grieve for, kaḥ why.

To him (Indrajith), the creator has conferred this weapon of Brahma endowed with terrific speed. To respect the missile both the princes have fallen. Why do you grieve?
brāhmamastraṅtatōdhīmānmānayitvātumārutiḥ .

vibhīṣaṇavacaśśrutvāhanūmāṅstamathābravīt ।।6.74.5।।


tataḥ thereafter, dhīmān wise, mārutiḥ Maruthi, hanūmān Hanuman, brāhmam Brahma, astram missile, mānayitvā to respect, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words, śrutvā hearing, atha this, abravīt spoke.

Thereafter, hearing Vibheeshana's words, wise Hanuman spoke this with respect to the missile of Brahma.
ētasminnihatēsainyēvānarāṇāṅtarasvinām .

yōyōdhārayatēprāṇāṅstaṅtamāśvāsayāva ।।6.74.6।।


ētannihatē who has been struck, tarasvinām who are strong, vānarāṇām Vanaras, asmin those, sainyē army, yaḥyaḥ who so ever, prāṇān are with life, dhārayatē breathing, taṅtam all of them, āśvāsayāma restore confidence.

"Whoever is strong among Vanaras, have been struck and are alive breathing among the Vanaras. Let us restore their confidence."
tāvubhauyugapavadīrauhanūmadrākṣasōttamau .

ulkāhastautadārātrauraṇaśīrṣēvicēratuḥ ।।6.74.7।।


vīrau heroes, tau those, ubhau two, hanūmadrākṣasōttamau Hanuman and foremost of Rakshasas (Vibheeshana), tadā then, rātrau night, ulkāhastau torch in hand, raṇaśīrṣē left in the battlefield, vicēratuḥ searched.

The two heroes, Hanuman and Vibheeshana, and the foremost of Rakshasas with torch in hand searched for the left over Vanaras in the battlefield.
bhinnalāṅgūlahastōrupādāṅguḷaśirōdharaiḥ .

sravadbhiḥkṣatajaṅgātraiḥprasravadbhistatastataḥ ।।6.74.8।।

patitaiḥparvatākārairvānarairabhisaṅkulām .

śassaiścapatitairdīptairdadṛśātēvasundharām ।।6.74.9।।


bhinnalāṅgūlahastōrupādāṅguliśirōdharaiḥ tails cut off, hand severed, some with broken thighs, legs and fingers, gātraiḥ necks, kṣatajam cut off, sravadbhiḥ letting out blood, prasravadbhiḥ discharging urine, samantataḥ all over, patitaiḥ fallen, parvatākāraiḥ of mountain form, vānaraiḥ Vanaras, abhisaṅkulām filled with, patitaiḥ fallen, dīptēḥ glowing, śastraiśca weapons, vasundharām on the ground, dadṛśātē saw.

Two of them saw the ground covered with Vanaras of mountain-like forms, who had fallen with tails cut off, some with broken thighs, broken legs and fingers, necks severed, letting off blood, discharging urine and glowing weapons lying on the ground.
sugrīvamaṅgadaṅnīlaṅśarabhaṅgandhamādanam .

gavākṣaṅ ca suṣēṇaṅ ca vēgadarśinamāhukam ।।6.74.10।।

maindaṅnaḷaṅjyōtimukhaṅdvividaṅpanasaṅtathā .

vibhīṣaṇōhanūmāṅścadadṛśātēhatān raṇē ।।6.74.11।।


vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, hanūmān ca and Hanuman, raṇē in battle, hatān struck down, sugrīvam Sugriva, aṅgadam Angada, nīlam Neela, śarabham Sarabha, gandhamādanam Gandhamadanam, gavākṣam Gavaksha, suṣēṇaṅ ca and Sushena, vēgadarśinamāhukam Vegadarsi, Ahuka, maindam Mainda, naḷam Nala, jyōtimukham Jyothimukha, dvividam Dwivida, panasaṅtathā Panasa, dadṛśātē saw.

Vibheeshana and Hanuman saw in the battlefield Sugriva, Angada, Neela, Sarabha, Gandhamadana, Gavaksha, Sushena, Vegadarsi, Ahuka, Mainda, Nala, Jyothimukha, Dwivida and Panasa struck down.
saptaṣaṣṭirhatāḥkōṭyōvānarāṇāṅtarasvinām .

ahnaḥpañcamaśēṣēṇavallabhēnasvayambhuvaḥ ।।6.74.12।।


svayambhuvaḥ creator's, vallabhēna by Indrajith, ahnaḥ struck down, pañcamaśēṣēṇa fifth and last period of the day, tarasvinām strong, vānarāṇām Vanaras, saptaṣaṣṭiḥ sixtyseven, kōṭyaḥ crores, hatāḥ killed.

By the creator's missile Indrajith struck down sixty-seven crores of strong Vanaras between the fifth and last part of the day.
sāgaraughanibhaṅbhīmaṅdṛṣṭavābāṇārditaṅbalam .

mārgatējāmbavantaṅsmihanūmān savibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.74.13।।


savibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, hanūmān Hanuman, sāgaraughanibham ? resembling ocean, bāṇārditam glowing arrows, balam army, dṛṣṭavā seeing, jāmbavantam Jambavantha, mārgatē looked for.

Vibheeshana and Hanuman seeing the ocean of Vanara army and the glowing arrows on them, looked for Jambavantha.
svabhāvajarayāyuktaṅvṛddhaṅśaraśataiścitam .

prajāpatisutaṅvīraṅśāmyantamivapāvakam ।।6.74.14।।

dṛṣṭavātamupasaṅgramyapaulastyōvākyamabravīt .


paulastyaḥ Paulastaya, svabhāvajarayā by nature, yuktam wise, vṛddham aged, śaraśataiḥ hundreds of arrows, citam pained, śāmyantam cooling, pāvakam iva like fire, vīram heroic, prajāpatisutam son of Prajapathi, dṛṣṭavā seeing, tamupasaṅgramya going close, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Paulastya (Vibheeshana of Paulastya clan), seeing the son of Prajapathi (Jambavan), who by nature was wise and aged, afflicted by hundreds of arrows, like a cooling fire sacrifice, went close by and spoke these words.
ccidāryaśaraistīkṣṇairnaprāṇādhvaṅsitāstava ।।6.74.15।।

vibhīṣaṇavacaśśrutvājāmbavānṛkṣapuṅgavaḥ .

kṛcchrādabhyugdiranvākyamidaṅvacanamabravīt ।।6.74.16।।


ārya noble, tīkṣṇaiḥ pointed, śaraiḥ arrows, tava yours, prāṇāḥ life, kaccit indeed, ṛkṣapuṅgavaḥ foremost of Bears, jāmbavān Jambavan, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words, śrutvā hearing, kṛcchrāt difficulty, vākyam words, abhyugadiran uttering, idaṅvacanam these words, abravīt spoke।।

"O Noble Jambavan! Indeed, your life has not been afflicted with these sharp arrows." Hearing this, Jambavan uttered these words with difficulty."
nairṛtēndramahāvīryasvarēṇatvā.bhilakṣyē .

pīḍyamānaśaśitairbāṇairnatvāpaśyāmicakṣuṣā ।।6.74.17।।


mahāvīrya great hero, nairṛtēndra ruler of Rakshasas, svarēṇa by voice, tvā your, abhilakṣyē, śitaiḥ sharp, bāṇaiḥ arrows, pīḍyamāna pierced, tvām you, cakṣuṣā eyes, napaśyāmi not see.

"Great hero, Vibheeshana! I recognise you by your voice. Pierced with sharp arrows I am not able to see you."
añjanāsuprajāyēnamātariśvā ca nairṛta .

hanumān vānaraśrēṣṭhaḥprāṇān dhārayatēkvacit ।।6.74.18।।


nairṛta Rakshasa, yēna by whom, añjanā Anjana, suprajāḥ Supraja, mātariśvāca blessed as parents, vānaraśrēṣṭhaḥ of Rakshasa, hanumān Hanuman, kvacit indeed, prāṇān life, dhārayatē alive.

Vibheeshana (Rakshasa)! Indeed, Hanuman, the foremost of Vanaras, by whose birth, Anjana and Supraja are blessed as parents, are they alive?
śrutvājāmbavatōvākyamuvācēdaṅvibhīṣaṇaḥ .

āryaputrāvatikramyakasmātpṛcchasimārutim ।।6.74.19।।


jāmbavataḥ Jambavatha, vākyam words, śrutvā hearing, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, idam these, vākyam words, uvāca said, āryaputrau noble son, atikramya leaving, mārutim Hanuman, kasmāt why, pṛcchasi enquiring.

After hearing Jambavantha, Vibheeshana said "Noble son, why are you enquiring about Hanuman?"
naivarājanisugrīvēnāṅgadēnāpirāghavē .

āryasandarśitassnēhōyathāvāyusutēparaḥ ।।6.74.20।।


ārya noble, vāyusutē son of wind god, yathā that way, paraḥ others, snēhaḥ affection, sandarśitaḥ showing, rājā king, sugrīvē Sugriva, naiva not, āṅgadē Angada, , rāghavē.pi even Raghava

"Noble one! You are showing affection to Hanuman but not to King Sugriva, or Angada or even Raghava?"
vibhīṣaṇavacaśśrutvājāmbavānvākyamabravīt .

śṛṇunairṛtaśārdūlayasmāt pṛcchāmimārutim ।।6.74.21।।


jāmbavān Jambavan, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words, śrutvā hearing, vākyam spoken, abravīt said, nairṛtaśārdūla tiger among Rakshasas, mārutim Maruthi, yasmāt your, pṛcchāmi enquiry, śṛṇu listen.

On hearing Vibheeshana, the tiger among Rakshasas, Jambavan replied, "Listen why I enquired about Maruthi."
tasminjīvativīrētuhatamapyahataṅbalam .

hanūmatyujjhitaprāṇējīvantō.pivayam hṛtā ।।6.74.22।।


tasminvīrē if this hero, jīvitaliving, hatamapi destroyed, balam army, ahatam intact, hanūmati Hanuman, ujjhitaprāṇē is still alive, vayam we, jīvantaḥapi living also, hṛtāḥ like dead only.

If this hero Hanuman is alive, even if the army is destroyed and if we are alive, it is like dead only.
dharatēmārutistātamārutapratimōyadi .

vaiśvānarasamōvīrvējīvitāśātatōbhavēt ।।6.74.23।।


tāta dear, mārutapratimaḥ equal to wind god, vīryē in valiance, vaiśvānarasamaḥ equal to Vysvanara's, mārutiḥ Maruthi, dharatēyadi is breathing, tataḥ then, jīvitāśā hope for life, bhavēt will be.

"Dear! If Hanuman who is equal to wind god, resembles Vyshvanara (God of fire) is breathing, then we can hope to live (for life)."
tatōvṛddhamupāgamyaniyamēnābhyavādayat .

gṛhyajāmbavataḥpādauhanūmānmārutātmajaḥ ।।6.74.24।।


tataḥ thereafter, mārutātmajaḥ son of wind god, hanūmān Hanuman, vṛddham aged, upāgamya coming close, niyamēnā in accordance with tradition, jāmbavataḥ Jambavantha, pādau feet, gṛhya clasped, abhyavādayat greeted.

Thereafter, Hanuman the son of the wind god coming close to the aged Jambavan clasped his feet in accordance with tradition and greeted him.
śrutvāhanumatōvākyaṅtadā.pivyathitēndriyaḥ .

punarjātamivātmānaṅmanyatēplavagōttamaḥ ।।6.74.25।।


tadā then, api again, vyathitēndriyaḥ whose senses were affected, plavagōttamaḥ foremost of Vanaras, hanumataḥ Hanuman, vākyam statement, śrutvā hearing, ātmānam himself, punaḥ again, puna once again born, manyatē felt।।

Then again, Jambavan whose senses were affected, on hearing the statement of Hanuman, the foremost of Vanaras, felt as though he was born again.
tatō.bravīnmahātējāhanūmantaṅ sa jāmbavān .

āgacchahariśārdūla vānarāṅstrātumarhasi ।।6.74.26।।


tataḥ then, mahātējā brilliant, saḥ he, jāmbavān Jambavan, hanūmantam to Hanuman, abravīt spoke, hariśārdūla tiger of Vanaras, āgaccha reaching, vānarān Vanaras, trātum protect, arhasi you ought.

Then brilliant Jambavan spoke to Hanuman, the tiger among Vanaras, on reaching him. "You ought to protect the Vanaras."
nānyōvakramaparyāptastvamēṣāṅparamassakhā .

tvatparākramakālō.yaṅnānyaṅpaśyāmikathañcana ।।6.74.27।।


tvam you, ēṣām in that way, vakramaparyāptaḥ fully endowed with prowess, paramaḥ great, sakhā friend, anyaḥ others, na no, ayam we, tvatparākramakālaḥ time to show your talent, anyam others, kathañcana none indeed, na paśyāmi I do not see any.

"You are fully endowed with prowess and great friend of monkeys in that way. It is time for you to show your talent. Indeed, I do not see anyone else."
ṛkṣvānaravīrāṇāmanīkānipraharṣaya .

śalyaukurucāpyētāsāditaurāmalakṣmaṇau ।।6.74.28।।


ṛkṣvānaravīrāṇām for the Bears and Vanaras, anīkāni excessive, praharṣaya happiness, sāditau unconscious, ētau for them, rāmalakṣmaṇau ca and for Rama and Lakshmana, viśalyau comfortable, kuru make them.

For the Bears and Vanaras, create excessive happiness. For Rama and Lakshmana who are unconscious, make them comfortable.
gatvāparamamadhvānamuparyuparisāgaram .

himavantaṅnagaśrēṣṭhaṅhanumangantumarhasi ।।6.74.29।।


hanūmān Hanuman, sāgaram uparyupari over the sea, paramam very, adhvānam far, gatvā going, nagaśrēṣṭham highest mountain, himavantam Himalayas, gantum going, arhasi ought to.

"Hanuman, you ought to go very far over the sea to the Himalayas, the highest mountain."
tataḥkāñcanamatyuccamṛṣabhaṅparvatōttamam .

kailāsaśikharaṅcāpidrakṣyasyariniṣūdana ।।6.74.30।।


ariniṣūdana destroyer enemies, tataḥ there, kāñcanam golden, atyugram top of, parvatōttamam foremost of the mountains, ṛṣabham Rshaba, kailāsaśikharaṅ ca on the peak of Kailasa, drakṣyasi will see।।

"O Destroyer of enemies! there on top you will see the foremost of the mountain Rshaba and on the peak of Kailasa."
tayōśaśikharayōrmadhyēpradīptamatulaprabham .

saryauṣadhiyutaṅvīra drakṣyasyauṣadhiparyatam ।।6.74.31।।


vīrahero, tayōḥ those two, śikhayōḥ peaks, madhyē middle, pradīptam glowing, atulaprabham very splendid, saryauṣadhiyutam all kinds of medicinal herbs, ōṣadhiparvatam mountain covered with medicinal herbs, drakṣyasi will see.

"Heroic Hanuman! In the middle of those two mountains, you will see a highly splendid mountain covered with all kinds of medicinal herbs."
tasyavānaraśārdūla catasrō mūdhi sambhavāḥ .

drakṣyasyōṣadhayōdīptādīpaynatyōdiśōdaśa ।।6.74.32।।


vanaraśārdūla tiger of monkeys, tasya your, mūrdhni on the summit, sambhavāḥ growing there, dīptāḥ illuminating, catasraḥ four, ōṣadhayaḥ medicinal hebs, daśō ten, dīpaynatyō flaming, drakṣyasi will see.

"O Tiger among monkeys! You will see on the summit four medicinal herbs growing there illuminating the ten directions."
mṛtasañjīvanīṅcaivaviśalyakaraṇīmapi .

suvarṇakaraṇīṅcaivasandhānakaraṇīṅtathā ।।6.74.33।।


mṛtasañjīvanīṅcaiva Mrtasanjivani (restoring life of the dead), viśalyakaraṇīm api Visalyakarani (capable of healing wounds inflicted by weapons), suvarṇakaraṇīṅcaiva Suvarna karani (restoring original complexion after injury), sandhānam Sandhani (capable of joining broken bones), karaṇīm herbs, tathā that way.

"Mrtasanjivani, Visalyakarani, Suvarnakarani, Sandhani, all these herbs are grown there."
tāssarvāhanumangṛhvakṣipramāgantumarhasi .

āśvāsayaharīn prāṇairyōjyagandhavahātmaja ।।6.74.34।।


hanuman Hanuman, tāḥ you, sarvāḥ all, gṛhya taking, kṣipram immediately, āgantum return, arhasi ought to, gandhavahātmaja son of wind god, harīn monkeys, prāṇaiḥ life, yōjya uniting, āśvasaya reassuring.

"Hanuman, taking the four herbs you, the son of wind god ought to return immediately with the speed of wind, to unite the life of the monkeys and reassure."
śrutvājāmbavatōvākyaṅhanūmān haripuṅgavaḥ .

āpūryatabalōddharṣaistōyavēgairivārṇavaḥ ।।6.74.35।।


mārutātmajaḥ son of wind god, hanuman Hanuman, jāmbavataḥ Jambvatha, vākyam instruction, śrutvā on hearing, arṇavaḥ ocean,, stōyavēgaiḥiva like infused with wind speed, balōddharṣaiḥ increased his strength, āpūryata completely.

"Hearing the instruction of Jambavantha, the son of the wind god, infused with wind speed as the ocean, heaves with the force of wind increasing his strength fully."
parvatataṭāgrasthaḥpīḍayan parvatōttamam .

hanūmāndṛśyatēvīrōdvitīyaivaparvataḥ ।।6.74.36।।


parvatatāṭāgrasthaḥ standing on top of the mountain, parvatōttamam foremost of the mountains, pīḍayan pressing, vīraḥ hero, saḥhanūmān that Hanuman, dvitīya second, parvataḥiva like mountain, dṛśyatē appeared.

Standing on the summit of the foremost of the mountains, hero Hanuman pressing his feet seemed like a second mountain
haripādavinirbhagnōniṣasāda sa parvataḥ .

na śaśākatadātmānaṅsōḍhuṅbhṛśanipīḍitaḥ ।।6.74.37।।


haripādavinirbhagnaḥ trodden by the feet of Hanuman, saḥparvataḥ that mountain, bhṛśapīḍitaḥ sank down, tadā then, ātmānam himself, vōḍhum forcibly pressed, na śaśāka not bear, niṣasāda his strength.

Trodden by the feet of Hanuman that mountain pressed forcibly by himself could not bear his strength.
tasyapēturnagābhūmauharivēgāccajajvaluḥ .

śṛṅgāṇi ca vyaśīryantapīḍitasyahanūmatā ।।6.74.38।।


hanūnatā Hanuman, pīḍitasya pressurised, tasya by his, nagāḥ mountain, harivēgāt by the speed Hanuman, bhūmau ground, pētuḥ fallen, jajvaluḥ ca started fire, śṛṅgāṇi ca by the impetuosity of his speed, vyaśīryanta shattered.

Oppressed by the speed of Hanuman, the mountain fell to the ground and by the impetuosity of his speed the mountain got shattered.
tasmin sampīḍyamānētubhagnadrumaśilātalē .

na śēkurvānarāssthātuṅghūrṇamānēnagōttamē ।।6.74.39।।


sampīḍyamānē began to get oppressed, bhagnadrumaśilātalē trees and rocks broken, tasmin nagōttamē that foremost of mountain, ghūrṇamānē crushed, vānarāḥ Vanaras, sthātum to stand, na śēkuḥ not possible.

As the foremost of the mountain got oppressed it crushed the trees and rocks on it and Vanaras were unable to stand on it.
sāghūrṇitamahādvārāprabhagnagṛhagōpurā .

laṅkātrāsākulārātraupravṛttēvābhavattadā ।।6.74.40।।


tadā then, ghūrṇitamahādvārā mighty gates shaken, prabhagnagṛhagōpurā shattered the homes and gates, trāsākulā stricken with fear, laṅkā Lanka, rātrau night, pravṛttēva dancing and shaking, abhavat seemed.

Then the mighty gates of Lanka shaking, homes shattered, stricken with fear that night it seemed Lanka was dancing.
pṛthivīdharasaṅkāśōnipīḍyadharaṇīdharam .

pṛthivīṅkṣōbhayāmāsasārṇavāṅmārutātmajaḥ ।।6.74.41।।


pṛthivīdharasaṅkāśaḥ like a mountain, mārutātmajaḥ wind god's son, dharaṇīdharam supported by earth, nipīḍya pressing, sārṇavām ocean, pṛthivīm earth, kṣōbhayāmāsa made to shake.

Son of the wind god, who was like a mountain supported by earth, pressing hard caused the earth with its ocean to shake.
ārurōhatadātasmāddharirmalayaparvatam .

mērumandarasaṅkāśaṅnānāprasravaṇākulam ।।6.74.42।।

nānādrumalatākīrṇaṅvikāsikamalōtpalam .

sēvitaṅdēvagandharvaiṣṣaṣṭiyōjanamucchritam ।।6.74.43।।

vidyādharairmunigaṇairapsarōbhirniṣēvitam .

nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇaṅbahukandaraśōbhitam ।।6.74.44।।

sarvānākulayaṅstatrayakṣagandharvakinnarān .

hanumān mēghasaṅkāśōvavṛdhēmārutātmajaḥ ।।6.74.45।।


tadā then, hariḥ monkey, tasmāt? from that, mērumandarasaṅkāśam resembling Meru and Mandara mountains, nānāprasravaṇākulam set with various springs, nānā es, dēvagandharvaiḥ Devas and Gandharvas, ṣaṣṭiyōjanam ? sixty yojanas, ucchritam high, vidyādharaiḥ by Vidhyadharas, munigaṇaiḥ sages, apsarōbhiḥ celestials, niṣēvitam frequented, nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇam filled with various species of deer, bahukandaraśōbhitam numerous caves, malayaparvatam Malaya mountain, ārurōha living there, mārutātmajaḥ son of wind-god, hanūmān Hanuman, tatra there, sarvān all, yakṣagandharvakinnarān Yakshas, Gandharvas and Kinnaras, ākulayan filled with, mēghasaṅkāśaḥ like a cloud, vavṛdhē grew.

From that mountain the monkey sprang to Malaya Mountain which was like Meru and Mandara mountains. It was set with various springs, covered with various trees and creepers, abounded with lotuses, frequented by Devas, Gandharvas. It was sixty yojanas high and visited by Vidhyadharas, celestial nymphs, and sages, filled with various species of deer and numerous caves. Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras were living there. There the son of the wind god grew in size like a cloud.
padbhyāṅtuśailamāpīḍyabaḍabāmukhavanmukham .

vivṛtyōgraṅnanādōccaistrāsayannivarākṣasān ।।6.74.46।।


śailam mountain, padbhyām by feet, āvidhya pressing, baḍabāmukhavat opening his largemouth, ugram angry, mukham face, vivṛtya opening, ivarākṣasān like Rakshasas, trāsayan fearful, uccaiḥ loudly, nanāda roared.

Pressing the mountain hard by his feet, opening his largemouth wide, he roared like Rakshasas to make Rakshasas fearful.
tasyanānadyamānasyaśrutvāninadamadbhutam .

laṅkāsthārākṣasāssarvē na śēkusspandituṅbhayāt ।।6.74.47।।


nānādyamānasya by the roaring, tasya its, uttamam loud, ninadam sound, śrutvā hearing, laṅkāsthāḥ Lanka's, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, sarvē all, bhayāt in fear, spanditum stir, na śēkuḥ not possible.

All the Rakshasas in Lanka hearing the loud roar of Hanuman were afraid and could not stir from there.
namaskṛtvā.tharāmāyamārutirbhīmavikramaḥ .

rāghavārthēparaṅkarmasamīhataparantapaḥ ।।6.74.48।।


bhīmavikramaḥ of terrific valour, parantapaḥ scorcher of enemies, mārutiḥ Maruthi, rāmāya Rama's, namaskṛtvā offering his prayer, rāghavārthē for Raghava, param stupendous, karma task, samīhata made up his mind.

Maruti, scorcher of enemies, endowed with terrific valour offered prayers to Sri Rama and made up his mind to embark on the stupendous task for Raghava.
sa pucchamudyamyabhujaṅgakalpaṅvinamyapṛṣṭhaṅśravaṇēnikuñcya .

vivṛtyavaktraṅbaḍabāmukhābhamāpuphluvēvyōmanicaṇḍavēgaḥ ।।6.74.49।।


saḥ he, bhujaṅgakalpam resembling a serpent, puccham bending his back, udyamya raising, pṛṣṭham tail, vinamya bent down, śravaṇē ears, nikuñcya bending, baḍabāmukhābham opening widely, vaktram mouth, vivṛtya expounded, nicaṇḍavēgaḥ terrible speed, vyōmni sky, āpuphluvē sprang up.

Raising his tail which resembled a serpent, bending his back, and ears, opening his mouth wide expounded Hanuman sprang up at terrific speed.
savṛkṣaṣaṇḍāṅstarasājahāraśailān śilāḥprākṛtavānarāṅśca .

bāhūruvēgōddhatasampraṇunnāstēkṣīṇavēgāssalilēnipētuḥ ।।6.74.50।।


sa: he, tarasā speed, vṛkṣakhaṇḍān clusters of trees, śailān mountains, śilāḥ rocks, prākṛtavānarāṅśca common monkeys, jahāra attracted, bāhūruvēgōddhatasampraṇunnāḥ by the speed of his arms and thighs, tē they, kṣīṇavēgāḥ speed reduced, salilē rocks, nipētuḥ fell.

By the speed of his arms and thighs clusters of branches of trees, mountains, rocks, and common monkeys were attracted, and with reduction of speed along the way the rocks fell.
tauprasāryōragabhōgakalpaubhujaubhujaṅgārinikāśavīryaḥ .

jagāmamēruṅnagarājamagyraṅdiśaḥprakarṣannivavāyusūnuḥ ।।6.74.51।।


bhujaṅgārinikāśavīryaḥ whose valour equalled Garuda enemy of serpents, saḥvāyusūnuḥ that son of wind god, uragabhōgakalpau resembling coils of serpents, bhujau arms, prasārya stretching, diśaḥ directions, prakarṣanniva as if attracting, agyram summit, mērum Meru, nagarājam king of mountains, jagāma went.

Stretching his arms which resembled coils of serpents, whose valour equalled Garuda, enemy of serpents, as if attracting all the directions went to the summit of the foremost mountain which equalled Meru mountain.
sa sāgaraṅghūrṇitavīcimālaṅtathābhṛśaṅbhrāmitasarvasattvam .

samīkṣamāṇassahasājagāmacakraṅyathāviṣṇukarāgramuktam ।।6.74.52।।


saḥ he, ghūrṇitavīcimālam whose waves were made to revolve, tathā that way, abhṛśam exceedingly, bhrāmitasarvasattvam whose creatures were made to whirl round, sāgaram ocean, samīkṣamāṇaḥ observing, sahasā violently, viṣṇukarāgramuktam loosened from Vishnu's hand, cakraṅyathā like the wheel of Vishnu, jagāma went.

Observing the ocean whose waves were made to revolve round (by his speed), exceedingly, whose creatures were made to whirl round violently (by the wind force generated by his speed), he went forth like the wheel loosened from Vishnu's hand.
sa parvatānvṛkṣagavān sarāṅsinadīstaṭākānipurōttamāni .

sphītān janāntānapisampravīkṣyajagāmavēgāpatitṛtulyavēgaḥ ।।6.74.53।।


pitṛtulyavēgaḥ like his father in speed, saḥ he, parvatān mountains, vṛkṣagavān trees, sarāṅsi birds, nadīḥ rivers, taṭākāni tanks, purōttamāni best of cities, tān them, sphītān prosperous, janāntān api people, sampravīkṣya watching, vēgāt speedily, jagāma went.

Watching the mountains, trees, birds, rivers, tanks, the best of cities, all of them and prosperous people, he went at his father's speed.
ādityapathamāśrityajagāma sa gataklamaḥ .

hanūmāṅstvaritōvīraḥpitṛtulyaparākramaḥ ।।6.74.54।।


pituḥ father, tulyaparākramaḥ equal in prowess, vīraḥ heroic, saḥhanumān that Hanuman, gataklamaḥ unwearied, tvaritaḥ hurriedly, ādityapatham the path of the Sun, āśritya following, jagāma went.

Hanuman who was equal to his father in prowess, went unwearied, hurriedly in the path of the Sun.
javēnamahatāyuktōmārutirmārutōyathā .

jagāmahariśārdūlōdiśaśśabdēnapūrayan ।।6.74.55।।


hariśārdūlaḥ tiger among monkeys, mārutiḥ Maruthi, mārutōyathā like the wind, mahatā great, javēna speed, yuktaḥ possessing, śabdēna sound, diśaḥ in all directions, pūrayan filling, jagāma went.

Maruthi, the tiger among monkeys went like the wind possessing great speed filling sound in all directions.
smmaranjāmbavatōvākyaṅmārutirvātaraṅhasā .

dadarśasahasāgatvāhimavantaṅmahākapiḥ ।।6.74.56।।


vātaraṅhasā going at wind speed, mahākapiḥ great monkey, mārutiḥ Maruthi, jāmbavataḥ Jambavantha, vākyam words, smaran remembering, sahasāgatvā reaching speedily, himavantam Himalayas, dadarśa sighted.

Going at wind speed, the great monkey Maruthi, remembering Jambavantha's words, reached and sighted the Himalayas.
nānāprasravaṇōpētaṅnānākandaranirgharam .

śvētābhracayasaṅkāśaiśaśikharaiścārudarśanaiḥ ।।6.74.57।।

śōbhitaṅvividhairvṛkṣairagamatparvatōttamam .


nānāprasravaṇōpētam adorned with different springs, bahukaṅdaranirgharam many caves and cascares, śvētābhracayasaṅkāśaiḥ like masses of white clouds, cārudarśanaiḥ beautiful to look at, śikharaiḥ peak, vividhaiḥ several, vṛkṣaiḥ trees, śōbhitam graced with splendour, parvatōttamam foremost of mountains, agamat reached.

He reached the foremost of mountains, which was adorned with different kinds of springs, many caves and cascades and graced with trees. The peaks were like masses of white autumn clouds graced with splendour and beautiful to look at.
sa taṅsamāsādyamahānagēndramatipravṛddhōttamaghōraśṛṅgam .

dadarśapuṇyānimahāśramāṇisurarṣisaṅghōttamasēvitāni ।।6.74.58।।


saḥ he, atipravṛddhōttamaghōraśṛṅgam tall and terrifying peaks, taṅmahānagēndram that Lord of mountains, samāsādya reaching, surarisaṅghōttamasēvitāni frequented by Devatas and sages puṇyāni meritorious, mahāśramāṇi hermitages, dadarśa saw.

Reaching there he saw the tall and terrifying peaks of the Lord of mountains frequented by Devatas and sages, meritorious hermitages.
sa brahmakōśaṅrajatālayaṅ ca śakrālayaṅrudraśarapramōkṣam .

hayānanaṅbrahmaśiraścadīptaṅdadarśavaivasvatakiṅkarāṅśca ।।6.74.59।।


saḥ he, bhrahmakōśam seat of Brahma, rajatālayaṅ ca the abode of Rajathanabha, śakrālayam abode of Indra, rudraśarapramōkṣam the location from which Rudra discharged an arrow (at Tripura), hayānanaṅ Lord Hayagriva, dīptam glowing, brahmaśiraḥ ca abode of the deity presiding over Brahmastra, vaivasvatakiṅkarāṅśca Vyvasvatah's attendants, dadarśa witnessed.

vajrālayaṅvaiśravaṇālayaṅ ca sūryaprabhaṅsūryanibandhanaṅca .

vajrālayam Vajralayaam (where Brahma gave Indra thunderbolt), sūryaprabham shining like the Sun, vaiśravaṇālayaṅ ca the abode of Kubera, sūryanibandhanaṅ ca the spot where Sun was bound, brahmāsanam Brahma's abode, śaṅkarakārmukaṅ ca the abode of the bow belonging to Lord Siva, vasundharāyāḥ the earth's, nābhiṅ ca navel, dadarśa saw.

He saw Vajralayam (where Brahma gave Indra the thunderbolt), the abode of Kubera shining like the Sun, the spot where the Sun was bound, Brahma's abode and the abode of the bow of Lord Siva, and the earth navel.
kailāsamagyraṅhimavacchilāṅ ca tatharṣabhaṅkāñcanaśailamagyram .

sandīptasarvauṣadhisanpradīptaṅdadarśasarvauṣadhiparvatēndram ।।6.74.61।।

He saw Kailas, the rocks of Himalayas, that way on the Rshaba the foremost Lord Siva, the golden mountain, and the great mountain on which grew, glowing medicinal herbs.
sa taṅsamīkṣyānalaraśmidīptaṅvisiṣmiyēvāsavadūtasūnuḥ .

āvṛtyataṅcauṣadhiparvatēndraṅtatrauṣadhīnāṅvicayaṅcakāra ।।6.74.62।।


saḥ he, analaraśmidīptam blazing like fire, tam those, samīkṣya observed, visiṣmiyē astonished, ōṣadhiparvatēndram mountain filled with herbs, āvṛtya going round, tatra there, ōṣadhīnām names of herbs, vicayam thinking, cakāra went.

Observing the herbs blazing like fire, he was astonished at the herbs on the mountain and went round thinking of the names of herbs (asked by Jambavan).
sayōjanasahasrāṇisamatītyamahākapiḥ .

divyauṣadhidharaṅśailaṅvyacaranmārutātmajaḥ ।।6.74.63।।


mahākapiḥ great monkey, saḥmārutātmajaḥ that son of wind god, yōjanasahasrāṇi a thousand yojanas, samatītya having travelled, divyauṣadhidharam began to range the wonderful herbs, śailam mountain, vyacarat went about searching.

The great monkey, son of the wind god, having traversed a thousand yojanas began to range the wonderful herbs and went about searching.
mahauṣadhyastatassarvāstasmin parvatasattamē .

vijñāyārthinamāyāntaṅtatōjagmuradarśanam ।।6.74.64।।


tataḥ then, tasmin in that, parvatasattamē wonderful mountain, sarvāḥ all over, mahauṣadhyaḥ among the herbs, arthinam seeker, āyāntam coming, vijñāya perceiving, tataḥ those, adarśanam disappeared, jagmuḥ disappeared.

Perceiving a seeker coming for them, the herbs all over the wonderful mountain disappeared.
sa tāmahātmāhanumānapaśyaṅścukōpakōpāccabhṛśaṅnanāda .

amṛṣyamāṇō.naginikāśacakṣurmahīdharēndraṅtamuvācavākyam ।।6.74.65।।


mahātmā great soul, saḥhanumān that Hanuman, tāḥ those, apaśyan not able to see, cukōpa became angry, kōpāt in anger, bhṛśam jumping up, nanāda ca roared, anaginikāśacakṣuḥ eyes burning like like, amṛṣyamāṇaḥ , tam , mahīdharēndram to the lordly mountain, vākyam words, uvāca said.

The great soul Hanuman was not able to see, those herbs, became angry and his eyes were burning like fire in anger. He jumped up and roared and said to the lordly mountain.
kīmētadēvaṅsuviniścitaṅtēyadrāghavēnāsikṛtānukampa .

paśyādyamadbāhubalābhibhūtōvikīrṇamātmānamathōnagēndra ।।6.74.66।।


nagēndra king of mountains, rāghavē to Raghava, kṛtānukampaḥ compassionate, na asiitiyat not showing this way, ētat all this, ēvam in that way, tē you, suviniścitaṅkim your determination, athō is it, adya now, madbāhubalābhibhūtaḥ overcome by my shoulder strength, ātmānam? myself, vikīrṇam crush, paśya you may see.

"O King of mountains! You are not showing compassion to Raghava. Is it your determination to be like this? Overcome by my shoulder strength I shall crush you now. You may see."
sa tasyaśṛṅgaṅsanagaṅsanāgaṅsakāñcanaṅdhātusahasrajuṣṭam .

vikīrṇakūṭaṅjvalitāgrasānuṅpragṛhyavēgātsahasōnmamātha ।।6.74.67।।


saḥ he, tasya its, sanagam trees, sanāgam elephants, sakāñcanam with gold mines, dhātusahasrajuṣṭam thousands of minerals, vikīrṇakūṭam crushed projections, jvalitāgrasānum set fire and burn the peaks, śṛṅgam peak, pragṛhya seizing, sāhasā vehemently, vēgāt swiftly, unmamātha uprooted.

Seizing hold of the peaks vehemently, its trees, elephants, gold mines withthousands of minerals he crushed the projections and set fire and burnt and uprooted swiftly.
satasamutpāṭyakhamutpapātavitrāsyalōkān sasurāsurēndrān .

saṅstūyamānaḥkhacarairanēkairjagāmavēgādgaruḍōgravēgaḥ ।।6.74.68।।


saḥ he, tam them, samutpāṭya striking terror, sasurāsurēndrān leaders, Devatas and demons, lōkān world, vitrāsya inhabiting, kham sky, utpāpāta uprooting, anēkaiḥ many, khacaraiḥ aerial creatures, saṅstūyamānaḥ praised, garuḍōgravēgaḥ at terrible speed of Garuda, vēgāt hurried, jagāma went.

Striking terror among Devatas and demons and leaders inhabiting the world, uprooting the mountain he hurried at Garuda's speed into the sky praised by aerial creatures.
sa bhāskarādhvānamanuprapannastaṅbhāskarābhaṅśikharaṅpragṛhya .

babhautadābhāskarasannikāśōravēssamīpēpratibhāskarābhaḥ ।।6.74.69।।

Resembling the Sun closely, radiant like the Sun he was taking the top of the mountain, betaking himself in the vicinity of the Sun he was like another Sun.
sa tēnaśailēnabhṛśaṅrarājaśailōpamōgandhavahātmajastu .

sahasradhārēṇasapāvakēnacakrēṇakhēviṣṇurivārpitēna ।।6.74.70।।

tēṣāṅsamudhghuṣṭaravaṅniśamyalaṅkālayābhīmataraṅvinēduḥ ।।6.74.71।।


uccaiḥ high, vānarāḥ Vanaras, taṅ they, prēkṣya seeing, vinēduḥ joyful, saḥpi he also, tān them, prēkṣya seeing, nanāda roared, tēṣām their samudhghuṣṭaravam raising loud noise, niśamya Rakshasas becoming aware, laṅkālayāḥ of Lanka, bhīmataram terrible fear, vinēduḥ roar.

Observing him high the Vanaras became joyful, and he also saw them. Hearing their loud noise becoming aware of the Rakshasas of Lanka also roared in terrible fear.
tatōmahātmānipapātatasmin śailōttamēvānarasainyamathyē .

haryuttamēbhyaśaśirasā.bhivādyavibhīṣaṇaṅtatra sa sasvajē ca ।।6.74.72।।


tataḥ then, mahātmā great, tasmin with that, śailōttamē foremost mountain, vānarasainyamadhyē in the midst of Vanara army, nipapāta descended, saḥ he, haryuttamēbhyaḥ best of Vanaras, śirasā head bent down, abhivādya greeting, tatra there, vibhīṣaṇam ? Vibheeshana, sasvajē ca embraced.

The great Hanuman along with the mountain descended in the midst of the Vanara army, and greeted the army head bent down and embraced Vibheeshana standing there.
tāvapyubhaumānuṣarājaputrautaṅgandhamāghrāyamahauṣadhīnām .

babhūvatustatratadāviśalyāvuttasthuranyē ca haripravīrāḥ ।।6.74.73।।


tau the two, mānuṣarājaputrau sons of ruler of men, ubhau both, mahauṣadhīnām of the great herbs, taṅgandham that fragrance, āghrāya inhaling, tadā then, viśalyau free from wounds, babhūvatuḥ restored, anyē others, hariprahīrāśca Vanara heroes, uttasthuḥ got up.

The two sons of the ruler of men inhaling the fragrance of the herbs became free from wounds. Other Vanara heroes also got restored.
sarvēviśalyāvirujāḥkṣaṇēnaharipravīrāścahatāścayēsyuḥ .

gandhēnatāsāṅpravarauṣadhīnāṅsuptāniśāntēṣvivasamprabuddhāḥ ।।6.74.74।।


sarvē all, yē those, haripravīrāḥ Vanara warriors, hatāḥ killed, syuḥ instant, tāsām their, pravarauṣadhīnām rid of their pain, gandhēna by the fragrance, kṣaṇēna in seconds, viśalyāḥ restored, virujāḥ life, suptāḥ asleep, niśāntēṣviva from sleep, samprabuddhāḥ will get up when fully awake.

All those Vanara warriors killed were restored with life instantly by the fragrance. Those who were asleep also got up when they became fully awake.
dāprabhṛtilaṅkāyāṅyudhyantēharirākṣasāḥ .

tadāprabhṛtimānārthamājñayārāvaṇasya ca ।।6.74.75।।

yēhanyantēraṇētatrarākṣasāḥkapikuñjaraiḥ .

hatāhatāstukṣipyantēsarvaēvatusāgarē ।।6.74.76।।


yadāprabhṛti from the beginning, laṅkāyām in Lanka, harirākṣasāḥ monkeys and Rakshasas, yudhyantē at the end of war, tadāprabhṛti in the same way without exception, mānārtham means of proof, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, ājñayā instruction, tatraraṇē there in war, yē those, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, kapikuñjaraiḥ Vanara leaders, hanyantē killed, sarvēēvatu all of them, hatāḥhatāḥ then and there, sāgarē ocean, kṣipyantē thrown.

From the beginning of the war in Lanka till the end without exception, all the Rakshasas were killed in war by the Vanara leaders then and there were thrown into the ocean by Ravana's instruction, not to have means of proof.
tatōharirgandhavahātmajastutamōṣadhīśailamudagravēgaḥ .

nināyavēgāddhimavantamēvapunaścarāmēṇasamājagāma ।।6.74.77।।


tataḥ then, udagravēgaḥ sprung from, gandhavahātmajaḥ son of wind god, hariḥ Vanara, tam those, ōṣadhīśailam mountain of herbs, vēgāt hurriedly, himavantamēva to Himalayasagain, nināya returned, punaśca again, rāmēṇa with Rama, samājagāma once again ajoined.

The son of the wind god sprung from there hurriedly took the mountain of herbs to Himalayas and returned and joined Rama.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēcatussaptatitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the seventy fourth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
