Sloka & Translation

[Lanka is set on fire by the Vanaras on Jambavan's instructions. Terrible fight takes place between Rakshasas and Vanaras.]

tatō.bravīnmahātējāssugrīvōvānarādhipaḥ .

arthyaṅvijñāpayaṅścāpihanūmantamidaṅvacaḥ ।।6.75.1।।


tataḥ then, vānarādhipaḥ Vanara king, mahātējāḥ intelligent, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, vijñāpayan ca api the task ahead, hanūmantam Hanumantha, arthyam make known, idam these, vacaḥ words, abravīt said.

Sugriva, the king of Vanaras called Hanuman to make him know the task ahead and said these words.
yatōhataḥkumbhakarṇaḥkumārāścaniṣūditāḥ .

nēdānīmupanirhāraṅrāvaṇōdātumarhati ।।6.75.2।।


yataḥ since, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, hataḥ killed, kumārāśca son, niṣūditāḥ destroyed, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, idānīm no longer, upanirhāram put up defence, dātum again, na arhati I think.

" As Kumbhakarna is killed and his sons are destroyed, Ravana may not put-up defence again. I think."
yēyēmahābalāssantilaghavaścaplavaṅgamāḥ .

laṅkāmabhyutantyāśugṛhyōlkāḥplavagarṣabhāḥ ।।6.75.3।।

harayōharisaṅkāśāḥpradagdhuṅrāvaṇālayam .


mahābalāḥ endowed with prowess, laghavaśca and quick, plavagarṣabhāḥ bulls among Vanaras, yēyē whoever, plavaṅgamāḥ Vanaras, santi able, harisaṅkāśāḥ foremost, harayaḥ monkeys, ulkāḥ torch, gṛhya taking, rāvaṇālayam Ravana's abode, pradagdhum invade, aśu go, laṅkām Lanka, abhipatantu let them.

"Of the bulls among vanaras, endowed with prowess, whoever is quick, able and foremost, let them go to Lanka, the abode of Ravana."
tōstaṅgataādityēraudrētasminniśāmukhē ।।6.75.4।।

laṅkāmabhimukhāssōlkājagmustēplavagarṣabhāḥ .


tataḥ thereafter, ādityē Sun, astaṅgatē having set, raudrē frightening, tasmin their, niśāmukhē faces turned, tē they, plavagarṣabhāḥ Vanara bulls, sōlkāḥ holding torches, laṅkām abhimukhāḥ facing Lanka, jagmuḥ went.

Thereafter the bulls among Vanaras turned their faces towards Lanka and went holding torches in hand, after the Sun set as the frightening night started.
ulkāhassairharigaṇaissarvatassamabhidrutāḥ ।।6.75.5।।

ārakṣasthāvirūpākṣāssahasāvipradadruvuḥ .


ulkāhassaiḥ torches in hand, harigaṇaiḥ Vanara troops, sarvataḥ all over, samabhidrutāḥ chased, ārakṣasthāḥ at the gates, virūpākṣāḥ Rakshasas, sahasā instantly, vipradudruvuḥ ran.

Vanara troops went all over with torches and chased by them, the Rakshasas at the gates ran instantly.
gōpurāṭṭapratōlīṣucaryāsuvividhāsu ca ।।6.75.6।।

prāsādēṣu ca samhṛṣṭāssasṛjustēhutāśanam .


samhṛṣṭāḥ rejoiced, tē they, gōpurāṭṭapratōlīṣu towering gates and attics, vividhāsu different, caryāsu streets, prāsādēṣu ca mansions, hutāśanam set fire, sasṛjuḥ to send away.

Rejoiced Vanaras set fire to the towering gates, attics, different streets as well as mansions to send away Rakshasas.
tēṣāṅgṛhasahasrāṇidadāhahutabhuktadā ।।6.75.7।।

prāsādāḥparvatākārāḥpatantidharaṇītalē .


tadā then, hutabhuk fire, tēṣām their, gṛhasahasrāṇi thousands of houses, dadāha burnt, parvatākārāḥ of mountain like form, prāsādāḥ mansions, dharaṇītalē on the ground, patanti collapsed.

Then thousands of their houses were burnt by fire (consumer of offerings), and mountain like mansions collapsed to the ground.
agururdahyatētatravaraṅ ca haricandanam ।।6.75.8।।

mauktikāmaṇayassnigdhāvajraṅcāpipravālakam .


tatra there, aguruḥ incense, dahyatē burnt, param best, haricandanam sandalwood, snigdhāḥ glossy, mauktikāḥ pearls, maṇayaḥ gems, vajr cāpi and diamonds also, pravālakam corals.

There, in Lanka, incense and the best of sandalwood was burnt. Nay even glossy pearls, gems and diamonds were also burnt.
kṣaumaṅ ca dahyatētatrakauśēyaṅcāpiśōbhanaṅ ।।6.75.9।।

āvikaṅvividhaṅcaurṇaṅkāñcanaṅbhāṇḍamāyudham .


tatra there, kṣaumam white silk, dahyatē was burnt, śōbhanam beautiful, kauśēyaṅ ca silks, āvikam blankets, vividham several, aurṇaṅ ca woollen, kāñcanam gold, bhāṇḍam chests, āyudham weapons.

Their white linen and beautiful silks were burnt. Nay, even several blankets of wool, chests and weapons were also burnt.
nānāvikṛtasaṅsthānaṅvājibhāṇḍaparicchadau ।।6.75.10।।

gajagraivēyakakṣyāścarathabhāṇḍāścasamskṛtāḥ .


nānāvikṛtasaṅsthānam different kinds of peculiar ornaments, vājibhāṇḍaparicchadam ornaments used for decoration of horses, gajagraivēyakakṣyāśca ornaments worn round the neck and girths of elephants, samskṛtāḥ polished, rathabhāṇḍāśca chariot decorations.

Different kinds of peculiar kinds of ornaments used to decorate horses, ornaments worn round the neck and girths of elephants, and polished chariot decorations.
nutrāṇi ca yōdhānāṅhastyaśvānāṅ va carma ca ।।6.75.11।।

khaḍagādhanūṅṣijvābāṇāstōmarāṅkuśaśaktayaḥ .


yōdhānām of the warriors, hastyaśvānāṅ ca shields of horses, tanutrāṇi armour, carmaca leather, khaḍagāḥ swords, dhanūṅṣi bow strings, jyāḥ excellent, bāṇāḥ arrows, tōmarāṅkuśaśaktayaḥ goads, lances and javelins.

Leather armour of the warriors, shields of horses, excellent bow strings, swords, arrows, goads, lances, and javelins.
rōmajaṅvālajaṅcarmavyāghrajaṅcaṇḍajaṅbahu ।।6.75.12।।

muktāmaṇivicitrāṅścaprāsādāṅścasamantataḥ .

vividhānastrasaṅyōgānagnirdahatitatravai ।।6.75.13।।


agniḥ fire, samantataḥ all over, rōmajam rugs made of hair of animals, vālajam whisks made of fur of animals, vyāghrajam tiger, carma skins, bahu many, caṇḍajam musk, muktāmaṇivicitrān wonderful pearls and gems, prāsādān ca dwellings, vividhān many kinds, saṅyōgān clusters of war weapons, tatra there, dahativai were burnt.

With fire all over, rugs made of hair of animals, whisks made of fur of animals, tiger skins, musk, wonderful pearls, and gems in laid dwellings of many kinds, and clusters of war weapons were burnt.
nānāvidhāngṛhacchandāndhadāhahutabhuktadā .

āvāsānrākṣasānāṅ ca sarvēṣāṅgṛhagarthinām ।।6.75.14।।

hēmacitratanutrāṇasragdāmāmbharadhāriṇām .

śīdhupānacalākṣāṇāṅmadvihvalagāminām ।।6.75.15।।

kāntālambitavastrāṇāṅśatrusañjātamanyunām .

gadāśūlāsihastānāṅkhādatāṅpibatāmapi ।।6.75.16।।

śayanēṣumahārhēṣuprasuptānāṅpriyaissaha .

trastānāṅgacchatāṅtūrṇaṅputrānādāyasarvataḥ ।।6.75.17।।

tēṣāṅśatasahasrāṇitadālaṅkānivāsinām .

adahatpāvakastatrajajvāla ca punaḥpunaḥ ।।6.75.18।।


tadā then, hutabhuk consumed by fire, citrān wonderful, nānāvidhān of many kinds, gṛhān homes, gṛhagarthinām well known Rakshasas, sarvēṣām all of them, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, āvāsān homes, dadāha burnt, tatra there, pāvakaḥ by fire, hēmacitratanutrāṇām armour made of gold, sragdhāmāṅmbaradhāriṇām decked with garland s and best of attire, śīdhupānacalākṣāṇām their eyes wild with inebriation, madvihvalagāminām walked slowly being intoxicated, kāntālambitavastrāṇāṅ holding the robes of loved ones, śatrusañjātamanyūnām seized with anger against enemies, gadāśūlasihastānām holding maces and tridents in hand, khādatām eating, pibatāmapi drinking, priyaissaha with loved ones, mahārhēṣu fast asleep, śayanēṣu on the best beds, prasuptānām sleeping, trastānām out of fear, putrān sons, ādāya taking, sarvataḥ all sides, tūrṇam quickly, gacchatām going, tēṣām all of them, nivāsinām dwelling there, śatasahasrāṇi hundreds and thousands, adahat burnt, punaḥpunaḥ again and again, jajvāla ca burning.

The fire consumed many kinds of wonderful homes of Rakshasas, with loved ones on the best beds, their armour made of gold; Rakshasas decked with garland s and best of attire; their eyes inebriated with intoxication, shaking while walking slowly, holding their loved ones, seized with anger against enemies, holding mace and tridents in hand, eating, drinking and sleeping on the best beds, fast asleep; some out of fear taking their sons going quickly and all of them dwelling there in hundreds and thousands were burning again and again.
sāravantimahārhāṇigambhīraguṇavanti ca .

hēmacandrārdhacandrāṇicandraśālōnatāni ca ।।6.75.19।।

tatracitragavākṣāṇisādhiṣṭhānānisarvaśaḥ .

maṇividrumacitrāṇispṛśantīvadivākaram ।।6.75.20।।

krauñcabarhibavīṇānāṅbhūṣaṇānāṅ ca nissvanaiḥ .

nāditānyacalābhānivēśmānyagnirdadāha sa ।।6.75.21।।


tatra there, agniḥ fire, sāravanti strong and impenetrable, mahārhāṇi many enclosures, gambīraguṇavanti ca magnificent, hēmacandhrārdhacandrāṇi constructed in gold in the shape of the crescent moon, candraśālōttamāni ca in the shape of moon, citragavākṣāṇi windows endowed with wonderful pictures, sarvaśaḥ all over, sādhiṣṭhānāni were high with rooms on top, maṇividrumacitrāṇi decorated with gems, divākaram Sun, spṛśantīva as if touching the Sun, krauñcabarhiṇavīṇānām rendered noisy with notes of herons and peacocks and veena, bhūṣaṇānāṅ ca of ornaments, nisvanaiḥ sounds, nāditāni vibrating sounds, acalābhāni looked like mountain in shape, vēśmāni dwellings, dadāha ha burnt.

The fire consumed the houses which were strong and impenetrable, with many enclosures, magnificent ones, constructed in gold in the shape of a half moon and full moon, windows endowed with wonderful pictures. All over the rooms were high on top, decorated with gems, and as if touching the Sun. It was rendered noisy with notes of herons and peacocks, playing of Veena, and jingling of ornaments like the vibration of sounds. The dwellings which looked like mountains were consumed by fire.
jvalanēnaparītānitōraṇānicakāśirē .

vidyudbhirivanaddhānimēghajālānigharmagē ।।6.75.22।।


jvalanēna by the touch of fire, parītāni covered, tōraṇāni archways, gharmagē in summer, vidyudbhiḥ lightning, naddhāni girt round, mēghajālānīva like clusters of clouds, cakāśirē shone.

The archways covered with a touch of fire shone like lightning in summer, girt round like clusters of clouds.
jvalanēnaparītāninipēturbhavanānvatha .

vajrivajrahatānīvaśikharāṇimahāgirēḥ ।।6.75.23।।


jvalanēna burnt, parītāni by fire, nipētuḥ fell down, bhavanāni mansions, mahāgirēḥ large mountain, vajrivajrahatānīva burnt by thunderbolt, śikharāṇi peaks, yathā that way, mahāgirēḥ like huge mountains.

The mansions burnt by fire fell down like a huge mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
vimānēṣuprasustāścadahyamānāvarāṅganāḥ .

tyaktābharaṇasarvāṅgāhāhētyuccairvicukruśuḥ ।।6.75.24।।


vimānēṣu in the mansion tops, prasuptāḥ sleeping, dahvamānāḥ burnt, varāṅganāḥ lovely women, tyaktābharaṇasarvāṅgāḥ removing the ornaments, hāhāiti alas! Oh Oh!! like this, uccaiḥ screamed, vicukruśuḥ loudly in despair.

The lovely women sleeping in burnt mansion tops screamed loudly in desperation saying 'Alas! Oh Oh!' and removing their ornaments.
tatracāgniparītāninipēturbhavanānyapi .

vajrivajrahatānīvaśikharāṇimahāgirēḥ ।।6.75.25।।


tatra there, agniparītāni peaks of mountains burnt, bhavanānyapi mansions, vajrivajrahatāni like struck by thunderbolt, mahāgirēḥ huge mountain, śikharāṇīva like peaks, nipētuḥ fell.

Like peaks of mountains struck by thunderbolt the mansions also fell, caught in fire.
tāninirdahyamānānidūrataḥpracakāśirē .

himavacchikharāṇīvadīptauṣadivanānica ।।6.75.26।।


nirdahyamānāni as they were burning, tāni those, divaśaḥ on all sides, dīptauṣanāni while glowing, himavacchikharāṇīva Himalaya peaks, dūrataḥ in distance, pracakāśirē as. if shining,

As the mansions were burning, they shone like the peaks of Himalayas glowing at a distance.
harmyāgrairdahyamānaiścajvālāprajvalitairapi .

rātrausādṛśyatēlaṅkāpuṣpitairivakiṅśukaiḥ ।।6.75.27।।


dahyamānaiḥ while burning, jvālāprajvalitaiḥ flames were blazing, harmyāgraiḥ tops of dwellings, sā they, laṅkā Lanka, rātrau night, puṣpitaiḥ blossoms, kiṅśukaiḥiva Kimsuka, dṛśyatē appeared.

While the tops of dwellings were burning, flames were blazing, and Lanka seemed adorned with Kimsuka blossoms.
hastyadhyakṣairgajairmuktērmuksaiścaivaturaṅgamaiḥ .

babhūvalaṅkālōkāntēbhrāntagrāhaivārṇavaḥ ।।6.75.28।।


laṅkā Lanka, hastyadhyakṣaiḥ guards of horses, muksaiḥ let loose, gajaiḥ elephants, muksaiḥ let loose, turaṅgamaiḥ horses, lōkāntē at the end of world cycle, bhrāntagrāhaḥ agitated, arṇavaḥiva ocean like, babhūva seemed.

In Lanka with the elephants set free, horses set free by the guards, it was like an agitated ocean at the end of the world cycle.
aśvaṅmuktaṅgajōdṛṣṭavākvacidbhītō.pasarpati .

bhītōbhītaṅgajaṅdṛṣṭavākvacidaśvōnivartatē ।।6.75.29।।


kvacit some, muktam released, aśvam horses, dṛṣṭavā seeing, gajaḥ elephants, bhītaḥ feared, apasarpati went in different direction, kvacit some, bhītam in fear, gajam elephants, dṛṣṭavā seeing, aśvaḥ horses, bhītaḥ fearing, nivartatē ran away.

Some horses that were released, went in different directions afraid of elephants. Some elephants seeing horses ran away in fear.
laṅkāyāṅdahyamānāyāṅśuśubhē sa mahārṇavaḥ .

chāyāsaṅsaktasalilōlōhitōdaivārṇavaḥ ।।6.75.30।।


laṅkāyām in Lanka, dahyamānāyām while burning, chāyāsaṅsaktasalilaḥ the image of reflected in water, mahārṇavaḥ of the ocean, lōhitōdaḥ red coloured, mahārṇavaḥiva like ocean, śuśubhē appeared.

While Lanka was burning its image reflected in the ocean made the ocean look like an ocean of red waters.
sābabhūvamuhūrtēnaharibhirdīpitāpurī .

lōkasyāsyakṣyēghōrēpradīptēvavasundarā ।।6.75.31।।


muhūrtēna in a short while, haribhiḥ monkeys also, dīpitā set fire, sāpurī that city, asya its, lōkasya in the world, ghōrē dreadful, kṣyē destruction, pradīptā flaming, vasundharāiva like land, babhūva was.

Set fire by the monkeys, in a short while, the city was like a land flaming out of dreadful destruction in the world.
nārījanasyadhūmēnavyāptasyōccairvinēduṣaḥ .

svanōjvalanataptasyaśuśruvēśatayōjanam ।।6.75.32।।


dhūmēna smoke, vyāptasya spread, jvalanataptasya scorched by fire, uccaiḥ at the top of, vinēduṣaḥ clamour, nārījanasya of the women folk, svanaḥ sound, śatayōjanam a hundred yojanas, śuśruvē heard.

By the smoke that spread, scorched by the fire, the clamour of the women folk at the top of their voice was heard at a hundred yojanas.
pradagdhakāyānaparān rākṣasānnirgatān bahiḥ .

sahasābhyutpatantismaharayō.thayuyutsavaḥ ।।6.75.33।।


atha and then, pradagdhakāyān burnt bodies, bahiḥ outside, nirgatān unable to bear, aparān continued, rākṣasān Rakshasas, harayaḥ monkeys, yuyutsavaḥ eager to fight, sahasā suddenly, utpatantisma assailed.

And thereafter the monkeys who were eager to fight assailed the Rakshasas who came out suddenly unable to bear the burning of the bodies.
udghuṣṭaṅvānarāṇāṅ ca rākṣasānāṅ ca nissvanaḥ .

diśōdaśasamudraṅ ca pṛthivīṅcānvanādayat ।।6.75.34।।


vānarāṇām monkeys, udghuṣṭaṅ ca clamour, rākṣasānām of the Rakshasas, nissvasaḥ ca sighing, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, samudraṅ ca ocean, pṛthivīṅ ca earth, vyanādayat resound.

The clamour of the monkeys and the sighing of the Rakshasas resounded in all the ten directions including the ocean as well as the earth.
viśalyautumahātmānautāvubhaurāmalakṣmaṇau .

asambhrāntaujagṛhatustadōbhaudhanuṣīvarē ।।6.75.35।।


mahātmānau great souls, tau the two, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, ubhau both, viśalyau excellent, asambhrāntau relieved of the pain, varē well known, tā those, ubhau two, dhanuṣī bows, jagṛhatuḥ seized hold.

The two great souls, Rama, and Lakshmana, both relieved of pain seized hold of excellent and well-known bows.
tatōvisphārayānasyarāmasyadhanuruttamam .

babhūvatumulaśśabdōrākṣasānāṅbhayāvahaḥ ।।6.75.36।।


tataḥ then, rāmaḥ ca Rama, uttamam best, dhanuḥ bow, visphārayāmānasya drew, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, bhayāvahaḥ out of fear, tumulaḥ tumultuous, śabdaḥ sound, bhabhūva created.

Then Rama drew the best of bow, that created fear among the Rakshasas by its tumultuous sound.
aśōbhatatadārāmōdhanurviṣphārayan mahat .

bhagavānivasaṅkṛddhōbhavōvēdamayaṅdhanuḥ ।।6.75.37।।


tadā then, mahat great, dhanuḥ bow, viṣphārayan bending, rāmaḥ Rama, vēdamayam signs of Vedas, dhanuḥ bow, saṅkṛddhaḥ in great fury, bhagavān divine, bhavaḥiva Lord Siva, aśōbhata shone.

Then, great Rama stretching his bow in great fury shone as though the divine Lord Siva was stretching his bow with imprints of Vedas.
udghuṣṭaṅvānarāṇāṅ ca rākṣasānāṅ ca nissvanam .

jyāśabdastāvubhauśabdāvatirāmasyaśuśruvē ।।6.75.38।।


rāmasya Rama's, jyāśabdaḥ that sound, vānarāṇām for the Vanaras, udghuṣṭam above, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, nissvanaṅ ca sounds, tau those, ubhau two, atiśuśruvē very high.

That sound of the twang of Rama's bow could be heard very high over and above the sounds of the Vanaras and Rakshasas.
vānarōdghuṣṭaghōṣaścarākṣasānāṅ ca nissvanaḥ .

jyāśabdaścāpirāmasyatrayaṅvyāpyadiśōdaśa ।।6.75.39।।


vānarōdghuṣṭaghōṣaḥ ca shouts of the vanaras, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, nissvanaḥ ca wailing also, rāmasya Rama's, jyāśabdaścāpi by that sound, trayam three, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, vyāpya spread.

The sound of Rama's bow twang, the clamour of the Vanaras as well as the wailing of Rakshasas, all the three could be heard in all ten directions.
tasyakārmukamuksaiścaśaraistatpuragōpuram .

kailāsaśṛṅgapratimaṅviśīrṇamapatadbhuvi ।।6.75.40।।


kailāsaśṛṅgapratimam the entrance gate of the city that was like Kailasa, tatpuragōpuram which resembled, tasya its, kārmukamuksaiśca shaft released from bow, śaraiḥ arrows, viśīrṇam crumbled, bhuvi on the ground, apatat fallen.

The entrance gate of Lanka, which was like Kailasa, crumbled and fell by the shaft released from the bow of Rama.
tatōrāmaśarān dṛṣṭavāvimānēṣugṛhēṣu ca .

sannāhōrākṣasēndrāṇāṅtumulassamapadyata ।।6.75.41।।


tataḥ then, vimānēṣu on the high rise mansions, gṛhēṣu ca and houses, rāmaśarān Rama's arrows, dṛṣṭavā seeing, rākṣasēndrāṇām Rakshasa leaders, sannāhaḥ preparing, tumulaḥ feared, samapadyata started.

Seeing Rama's arrows on the high-rise mansions and houses, the Rakshasa leaders started preparing for comb at out of fear.
tēṣāṅsannahyamānānāṅsiṅhanādaṅ ca kurvatām .

śarvarīrākṣasēndrāṇāṅraudrīvasamapadyata ।।6.75.42।।


sannahyamānānām as they were preparing, siṅhanādam leonine, kurvatām doing, tēṣām by them, rākṣasēndrāṇām Rakshasa leaders, śarvarī night, raudrīva Rudra's, samapadyata came upon.

As the Rakshasa leaders were preparing (for attack) and emitting leonine roar, night came upon like the night of Rudra (night of final dissolution).
ādiṣṭāvānarēndrāstēsugrīvēṇamahātmanā .

āsannadvāramāsādyayudhyadhvaṅplavagarṣabhāḥ ।।6.75.43।।

yaścavōvitathaṅkurvāttatratatravyavasthitaḥ .

sa hantavyōhisaṅphlutyarājaśāsanadūṣakaḥ ।।6.75.44।।


tē they, vānarēndrāḥ Vanara king, mahātmanā great soul, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, ādiṣṭāḥ commanded, plavagarṣabhāḥ bulls among monkeys, āsannam reaching, dvāram gate, āsādya reached, yudhyadhvam encounter, vaḥ or, yaḥ he who, tatratatra here and there, vyavasthitaḥapi staying there, vitatham false, kurvāt do, rājaśāsanadūṣakaḥ one who does not obey this king's order, saḥ he, ahisaṅphlutya guilty of flouting, hantavyaḥ be destroyed, tēṣu for them.

Sugriva the great king of Vanaras commanded all the bulls among Vanaras, to encounter after reaching the gate of Lanka. "He who is staying wherever they are does not obey the king's command will be killed for being guilty of flouting the command", ordered Sugriva to the Vanaras.
tēṣuvānaramukhēṣudīptōlkōjjvalapāṇiṣu .

sthitēṣudvāramāsādyarāvaṇaṅmanyurāviśat ।।6.75.45।।


dīptōlkōjjvalapāṇiṣu holding burning torches in hand, tēṣu they, vānaramukhyēṣu Vanara chiefs, dvāram gate, āsādya reaching, sthitēṣu standing, rāvaṇam Ravana, manyurāviśat overtaken by anger.

Holding burning torches in hand the Vanara chiefs reached and standing at the gate, saw that Ravana was overtaken by anger.
tasyajṛmbhitavikṣēpādvyāmiśrāvaidiśōdaśa .

rūpavānivarudrasyamanyurgātrēṣvadṛśyata ।।6.75.46।।


tasya his, jṛmbhitavikṣēpāt violent disturbance, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, vyāmiśrāḥvai yawning, gātrēṣu limbs, rudrasya Rudra's, rūpavān form, manyuḥ wrath, adṛśyataiva perceptible like.

The ten directions were disturbed violently by his yawning and his wrath was perceptible like Rudra' s form in his limbs by his wrath.
sa nikumbhaṅ ca kumbhaṅ ca kumbhakarṇātmajāvubhau .

prēṣayāmāsasaṅkṛddhōrākṣasasairbahubhissaha ।।6.75.47।।


saṅkṛddhaḥ becoming very angry, saḥ he, kumbhaṅ ca Kumbha and, nikumbhaṅ ca Nikumbha, kumbhakarṇātmajau Kumbhakarna's sons, ubhau both, bahubhiḥ many, rākṣasaissaha Rakshasas, prēṣayāmāsa sent for.

Seized with anger, he sent for Kumbha and Nikumbha, both the sons of Kumbhakarna and many Rakshasas.
yūpākṣaśśōṇitākṣaścaprajaṅghaḥkampanastathā .

niryayuḥkaumbhakarṇibhyāṅsaharāvaṇaśāsanāt ।।6.75.48।।


yūpākṣaḥ Yupaksha, śōṇitākṣaśca Sonithasksha, prajaṅghaḥ Prajangha, tathā similarly, kampanaḥ Kampana, rāvaṇaśāsanāt by Ravana's command, kaumbhakarṇibhyāṅsaha Kumbhakarna's sons, niryayuḥ set out.

Yupaksha, Sonithaksha, Prajangha, Kampana set out with both the sons of Kumbhakarna.
śaśāsacaivatān sarvānrākṣasān sumahābalān .

rākṣasāgacchatādyaivasiṅhanādaṅ ca nādayan ।।6.75.49।।


saḥ he, mahābalān extraordinary strength, tān them, sarvān all, rākṣasān Rakshasas, śaśāsa ca ordered, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, siṅhanādam lion roar, nādayan roaring, adyaiva now, gacchata go.

Roaring like a lion, he ordered all the Rakshasas of extraordinary strength to proceed instantly.
tatastucōditāstēnarākṣasājvalitāyudhāḥ .

laṅkāyāniryayurvīrāḥpraṇadantaḥpunaḥpunaḥ ।।6.75.50।।


tataḥ then, tēna by him, cōtāḥ , jvalitāyudhāḥ glowing weapons, vīrāḥ warriors, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, punaḥpunaḥ again and again, praṇadantaḥ offering salutations, laṅkāyāḥ from Lanka, niryayuḥ departed.

Ordered by him again and again, the Rakshasa warriors went from Lanka with glowing weapons offering salutations to him.
rakṣasāṅbhūṣaṇasthābhirbhābhissvābhiścasarvaśaḥ .

cakrustēsaprabhaṅvyōmaharayaścāgnibhissaha ।।6.75.51।।


rakṣasām Rakshasas, bhūṣaṇasthābhiḥ by the ornaments, sarvaśaḥ all over, rbhābhi splendour, svābhiśca their own, tē they, agnibhissha torches also, harayaḥ ca monkeys, vyōma sky, saprabham by that glow, cakruḥ went.

The Rakshasas by the effulgence of ornaments and by themselves illumined all over the sky like monkeys did with torches.
tatratārādhipasyābhātārāṇāṅ ca tathaiva ca .

tayōrābharaṇāsā ca balayōrdyāmabhāsayan ।।6.75.52।।


tatra there, tārādhipasyā Lord of stars, ābhā light, tathaiva ca like that, tārāṇām stars, bhā light, tayōḥ both, abharāṇābhā ca splendour of ornaments, balayō two armies, rdyāma sky, abhāsayan brightened.

There the radiance of the moon and stars and the splendour of their ornaments brightened the sky.
candrābhābhūṣaṇābhā ca gṛhāṇāṅsāgaraḥpunaḥ .

harirākṣasasainyānibhrājayāmāsasarvataḥ ।।6.75.53।।


candrābhā moon light, bhūṣaṇābhā ca splendour of ornaments, sāgaraḥ ocean, gṛhāṇām dwellings, punaḥ again, sarvataḥ everywhere, harirākṣasasainyāni monkey and Rakshasa army, bhrājayāmāsa shone brilliantly.

The moon light and the splendour of the ornaments, also the light of shining ocean and dwellings lit up the Vanara and Rakshasa armies.
tatracōrdhvaṅpradīptānāṅgṛhāṇāṅsāgaraḥpunaḥ .

bhābhissaṅsaktasalilaścalōrmiśśuśubhē.dhikam ।।6.75.54।।


tatra there, calōrmiḥ waves, sāgaraḥ of the ocean, punaḥ again, ardhapradīptānām half burnt, gṛhāṇām houses, bhābhiḥ shone, saṅsaktasalilaḥ united with water, adhikam very, śuśubhē bright.

There the waves of the ocean shone brightly getting united with the fire of half burnt houses.
patākādhvajasaṅsaktamuttamāsiparaśvadham .

bhīmāśvarathamātaṅgaṅnānāpatatisamākulam ।।6.75.55।।

dīptaśūlagadākhaḍagaprāsatōmarakārmukam .

tadrākṣasabalaṅghōrabhīmaṅvikramapauruṣam ।।6.75.56।।

dadṛśējvalitaprāsaṅkiṅkiṇīśatanāditam .

hēmajālācitabhujaṅvyāvēṣṭitaparaśvatham ।।6.75.57।।

vyāghūrṇitamahāśastraṅbāṇasaṅsaktakārmukam .

gandhamālyamadhūtsēkasammōditamahānilam ।।6.75.58।।


patākadhvajasaṅsaktam fixed with flags and poles, uttamāsiparaśvadham equipped with the best of axes, bhīmāśvarathamātaṅgam formidable chariots, horses and elephants, nānāpatatisamākulam different kinds of foot soldiers, dīptaśūlagadākhaḍagaprāsatōmarakārmukam distinguished by shining tridents, maces, swords, spears and lances, bows, ghōravikramapauruṣam warriors of frightening valour and prowess, jvalitaprāsam shining barbed missiles, kiṅkiṇīśatanāditam hundreds of bells tied round the chariots, elephants, hēmajālācitabhujam endowed with arms of warriors decorated with gold, vyāvēṣṭitaparaśvadham axes to kill, vyāghūrṇitamahāśastram weapons to pierce through, bāṇasaṅsaktakārmukam arrows fixed to the bows, gandhamālyamadhūtsēkasammōditamahānilam fragrant with abundance of sandal, tat that, rākṣasabalam Rakshasa army, bhīmam terrific, dadṛśē appeared.

Then the Rakshasa army appeared terrific, fixed with flags and poles, equipped with best of axes, horses yoked to formidable chariots and elephants; different kinds of foot soldiers, distinguished by wielding shining tridents, maces, swords spears and lances; warriors of frightening valour and prowess holding shining barbed missiles; hundreds of tiny bells tied to the chariots and elephants making noise ; warriors endowed with arms decorated with gold, with axes and weapons to pierce; arrows fixed to the bows, with an abundance of fragrance.
ghōraṅśūrajanākīrṇaṅmahāmbudaranissvanam .

taddṛṣṭavābalamāyātaṅrākṣasānāṅsudāruṇaṅ ।।6.75.59।।

sañcacālaplavaṅgānāṅbalamuccairnanāda ca .


ghōram fierce, śūrajanākīrṇam crowded with warriors, mahāmbudharanissvanam like rainy. cloud thundering, sudāraṇam dreadful, āyātam coming, tat that, rākṣasānāṅbalam, Rakshasa army, dṛṣṭavā seeing, plavaṅgānām monkeys, balam troops, sañcacāla coming forward, uccaiḥ elevated, nanāda ca making loud noise.

Crowded with fierce warriors coming like thundering rainy clouds, the Rakshasas, and the monkey troops coming forward made loud noises with an elevated tone.
javēnāphlutya ca punastadbalaṅrakṣasāṅmahat ।।6.75.60।।

abhyayātpratyaribalaṅpataṅgāivapāvakam .


rakṣasām Rakshasas, mahat great, tat balaṅpunaḥ again that army, javēna speed, āphlutya moths, pataṅgāpāvakam fly towards flame, pratyaribalam hostile army, pratyayāt rushed.

The great army of Rakshasas rushed towards the hostile army just as moths flew up towards flame.
tēṣāṅbhujaparāmarśavyāmṛṣṭaparighāśani ।।6.75.61।।

rākṣasānāṅbalaṅśrēṣṭhaṅbhūyastaramaśōbhata .


tēṣāṅrākṣasānām by the Rakshasas, bhujaparāmarśavyāmṛṣṭaparighāśani Clubs and Asanis brandished by rubbing with the arms, śrēṣṭham great, balam army, bhūyaḥ appeared, param very, aśōbhata brightly.

Their Clubs and Asanis brandished by rubbing with their arms, the great army of Rakshasas appeared very bright.
tatrōnmattāivōtpēturharayō.thayuyutsavaḥ ।।6.75.62।।

taruśailairabhighnantōmuṣṭibhiścaniśācarān .


atha and now, tatra there, yuyutsavaḥ eager, harayaḥ monkeys, niśācarān night rangers, taruśailaiḥ with trees and rocks, muṣṭibhiḥ ca and fists, abhighnantaḥ striking, unmattāḥiva as if gone mad, utpētuḥ rose up.

Thereafter the monkeys eager to fight with night rangers rose as if gone mad striking the night rangers with trees and rocks.
tathaivāpatatāṅtēṣāṅkapīnāmasibhiśaśitaiḥ ।।6.75.63।।

śirāṅsisahasājahrūrākṣasābhīmadarśanā .


tathaiva in that manner, darśanā showed up, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, āpatatām approaching, tēṣāṅkapīnām those monkeys, śirāṅsi head, sahasā instantly, śitaiḥ sharp swords, jahruḥ cut off.

When the Rakshasas showed up in that manner, the monkeys approaching them cut off their heads instantly with sharp swords.
daśanairhatakarṇāścamuṣṭiniṣkīrṇamastakāḥ ।।6.75.64।।

śilāprahārabhagnāṅgāvicērustatrarākṣasāḥ .


tatra there, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, daśanaiḥ teeth, hatakarṇāḥ , ears bitten off muṣṭiḥ with fist, niṣkīrṇamastakāḥ skulls smashed, śilāprahārabhagnāṅgāḥ limbs broken with blows of rocks, vicēruḥ moved about.

The Rakshasas with ears bitten off by the teeth of the monkeys, skulls smashed with fists, and limbs broken with blows of rocks they moved about.
tathaivāpyaparētēṣāṅkapīnāmabhilakṣitā ।।6.75.65।।

pravīrānabhitōjaghnurghōrarūpāniśācarāḥ .


tathaiva in the same way, ghōrarūpāḥ of terrific appearance, aparē more, niśācarāḥ night rangers, śitaiḥ sharp, asibhiḥ with swords, tēṣām those, kapinām Vanaras, pravīrān great heroes, abhitaḥ in front, jaghnuḥ struck.

In the aforesaid manner the Vanaras struck more night rangers of terrific appearance, great heroes in front of them with sharp swords.
ghnantamanyaṅjaghānānyaḥpātayantamapātayat ।।6.75.66।।

garhamāṇaṅjagarhē.nyōdaśantamaparō.daśat .


ghnantam struck, anyam other, anyaḥ other, jaghāna striking, pātayantam throwing down, apātayat thrown, garhamāṇam reproach contemptuously, anyaḥ other, jagarhaḥ abused, daśantam one who is biting, aparaḥ other, adaśat bitten.

One struck another, who was striking the other. One threw down another who was throwing the other. One abused another reproaching contemptuously, and one bit his rival biting the other.
dēhītyanyōdadātyanyōdadāmītyaparaḥpunaḥ ।।6.75.67।।

kiṅklēśayasitiṣṭhētitatrānyōnyaṅbabhāṣirē .


tatra there, anyaḥ others, dēhīti hit me, anyaḥ other, dadāti I am hitting, aparaḥpunaḥ again other, dadāmīti intervened, kiṅklēśayasi who are you crying, taṣṭhaiti suffer like this, anyōnyam one another, babhāṣirē conversed with each other.

There they conversed this way with one another- 'One said hit me and another one offered to hit,', again another intervened and said, 'Why are you crying?' meaning I offer resistance, one said 'Why are you suffering like this?'.
vipralambhitavastraṅ ca vimuktakavacāyudham ।।6.75.68।।

samudyatamahāprāsaṅyaṣṭiśūlāsisaṅkulam .

prāvartatamahāraudraṅyuddhaṅvānararakṣasām ।।6.75.69।।


vānararakṣasām Vanaras and Rakshasas, mahāraudram highly enraged, yuddham fight, vipralambhitaśastram raiment slipped, vimuktakavacāyudham shields and weapons dodged, samudyatamahāprāsam huge lances were lifted up, yaṣṭiśūlāsisaṅkulam fists, tridents swords and spears, prāvartata were used.

Highly enraged Vanaras and Rakshasas fought with them, raiment slipping, shields and weapons dodged, huge lances lifted to fight. They used fists, tridents, spears, and swords.
vānarāndaśasaptētirākṣasājaghnurāhavē .

rākṣasāndaśasaptētivānarāścābhyapātayan ।।6.75.70।।


āhavē in that fight, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, daśa ten, sapta seven, iti like this, vānarān Vanaras, jaghnuḥ struck, vānarāśca Vanaras, rākṣasān Rakshasas, daśa ten, sapta seven, iti like this, abhyapātayan kept killing.

In that fight the Rakshasas killed the Vanaras at the rate of ten to seven and the Vanaras struck down Rakshasas at the rate of ten to seven.
visrastakēśavasanaṅvidhvastakavacadhvajam .

balaṅrākṣasamālambyavānarāḥparyavārayan ।।6.75.71।।


vānarāḥ Vanaras, visrastakēśavasanam hair fallen raiment slipped, vimuktakavacadhvajam shields and staff posts thrown, rākṣasam Rakshasas, balam army, ālambya disturbed, paryavārayan surrounded.

The Vanaras surrounded the disturbed Rakshasas, whose hair was ripped off, raiment slipped off, shields and staff posts thrown.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāṇayēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēpañcasaptatitamassargaḥ ।।
