[Hanuman kills Nikumbha.]

nikumbhōbhrātaraṅdṛṣṭavāsugrīvēṇanipātitam .

pradahannivakōpēnavānarēndramavaikṣata ।।6.77.1।।


nikumbhaḥ Nikumbha, bhrātaram brother, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, nipātitam struck down, dṛṣṭavā seeing, kōpēna in wrath, pradahanniva as if burning, vānarēndram Vanara king, avaikṣata gazed

Seeing his brother struck down by Sugriva, Nikumbha gazed at him as if to burn him in wrath.
tatassragdāmasannaddhaṅdattapañcāṅgulaṅśubham .

ādadēparighaṅvīrōmahēndraśikharōpamam ।।6.77.2।।


tataḥ then, vīraḥ hero, sragdāmasannaddhamcollected together, girded with flowers, dattapañcāṅgulam measuring five digits in breadth, śubham auspicious, mahēndraśikharōpamam like the peak of Mahendra mountain, parigham club, ādadē took

Then the hero Nikumbha, girded with flowers measuring five digits in breadth, took an auspicious club like the peak of Mahendra mountain.
hēmapaṭṭaparikṣiptaṅvajravidrumabhūṣitam .

yamadaṇḍōpamaṅbhīmaṅrakṣasāṅbhayanāśanam ।।6.77.3।।


hēmapaṭṭaparikṣiptam decked with golden band, vajravidrumabhūṣitam encrusted with diamonds and corals, yamadaṇḍōpamam, like the rod of Yama, bhīmam fierce rakṣasām Rakshasa, bhayanāśanam dispelled fear

It was decked with a gold band, encrusted with diamonds and corals, in the form of Yama's rod, a fierce one which dispelled fear.
tamāvidhyamahātējāśśakradhvajasamaṅtadā .

ninanādavivṛttāsyōnikumbhōbhīmavikramaḥ ।।6.77.4।।


mahātējāḥ very splendrous, bhīmavikramaḥ of terrific strength, nikumbhaḥNikumbha, śakradhvajasamaṅtadā with the banner of Indra, tam to him, āvidhya pierced with force, vivṛttāsyaḥopened mouth wide, ninanāda roared

The club was highly splendorous and of terrific strength with the banner of Indra and Nikumbha took that club roared opening his mouth wide and pierced it with force.
urōgatēnaniṣkēṇabhujasthairaṅgadairapi .

kuṇḍalābhyāṅ ca citrābhyāṅmālayā ca vicitrayā ।।6.77.5।।

nikumbhōbhūṣaṇairbhātitēnasmaparighēṇa ca .

yathēndradhanuṣāmēghassavidyutstanayitnumān ।।6.77.6।।


saḥnikumbhaḥ that Nikumbha, urōgatēna on the chest, niṣkēṇa by the golden, bhujasthaiḥ arms, aṅgadaiḥapi armlets, citrābhyāmwonderful, kuṇḍalābhyām earrings, citrayācolourful, mālayā ca garland s also, bhūṣaṇaiḥornaments, tēna, parighēṇa ca and with clubs, savidyutstanayitnumān lightnings and thunder, indradhanuṣā Indra's bow, mēghaḥyathā like clouds, bhātisma shone

Nikumbha was shining with ornaments on his chest, golden armlets on arms, wonderful earrings and wonderful garland s holding clubs in hand, with bow like Indra's and roaring like lightning and thunder in the clouds.
parighāgrēṇapuṣpōṭavātagrathanirmahātmanaḥ .

prajajvālasaghōṣaścavidhūmaivapāvakaḥ ।।6.77.7।।


mahātmanaḥ great self, parighāgrēṇa circling club, vātagrathaniḥ seven winds, pusphōṭa burst, saghōṣaḥ by the crash, vidhūmaḥsmokeless, pāvakaḥiva like fire, prajajvāla glowed

By Nikumbha whirling around the club and the conjunction of the seven winds coming in contact with the club in his hand crashed in space and glowed like a smokeless fire burst forth.
nagaryāviṭapāvatyāgandharvabhavanōttamaiḥ .

satāragrahanakṣatraṅsacandraṅsamahāgraham ।।6.77.8।।

nikumbhaparighāghūrṇaṅbhramatīvanabhasthsalam .


viṭapāvatyā Vitapavati (Alaka), nagaryā city, gandharvabhavanōttamaiḥ excellent abodes of Gandharvas, satārāgrahanakṣatram hosts of stars and mansions, sacandram lunar abodes, samahāgraham along with other planet abodes, nabhaḥsthalam the heaven, nikumbhaparighāghūrṇam by the spinning of Nikumbha's club, bhramatīva revolved round

The heaven with the city of Vitapavati, including the excellent abodes of Gandharvas, the hosts of stars and mansions, the lunar abodes along with other planet abodes revolved round as though it was caused by the spinning of Nikumbha's club.
durāsadaścasañjajñēparighābharaṇaprabhaḥ ।।6.77.9।।

kapīnāṅsanikumbhāgniryugāntāgnirivōtthitaḥ .


parighābharaṇaprabhaḥ glowing by the cluband ornaments, kapīnāṅsa for the Vanaras, nikumbhāgniḥ fire of Nikumbha, utthitaḥ burst, yugāntāgniḥiva as though it is fire at the time of dissolution of the universe, durāsadaḥformidable, sañjajñē to reflect

The glow of the club, the ornaments, and the fire of Nikumbha that burst forth was like the fire at the time of dissolution of the universe. It was formidable for the Vanaras to reflect on.
rākṣasāvānarāścāpi na śēkusspandituṅbhayāt ।।6.77.10।।

hanūmāṅstuvivṛtyōrastasthautasyāgratōbalī .


rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, vānarāścāpi even Vanaras, bhayāt out of fear, spanditum to move, na śēkuḥnot able, balī mighty, hanūmān tu Hanuman only, uraḥchest, vivṛtya showing, tasthau stood

The Rakshasas and even Vanaras were not able to move out of fear. Only mighty Hanuman stood there showing his chest.
parighōpamabāhustuparighaṅbhāskaraprabham ।।6.77.11।।

balībalavatastasyapātayāmāsavakṣasi .


parighōpamabāhaḥ arms like iron bars, balī mighty, bhāskaraprabhām shining like Sun, parigham iron club, balavataḥ mighty, tasya his, vakṣasi on the breast, pātayāmāsathrew

The Rakshasa, whose arms were like iron bars and shining like the Sun brought it down on the breast of mighty Hanuman.
sthirētasyōrasivyūḍhēparighaśśatadhākṛtaḥ ।।6.77.12।।

vikīryamāṇassahasāulkāśatamivāmbarē .


sthirē touched, vyūḍhēbroad, tasyaurasi on his chest, parighaḥiron club, śatadhā hundred splinters, kṛtaḥ split, sahasā as soon as, ambarē in the sky, ulkāśatamiva like hundred meteors, vikīryamāṇaḥcrumbled

As soon as the iron club touched the broad chest (of Hanuman), it split into a hundred splinters, in the sky and crumbled.
sa tutēnaprahārēṇavicacālamahākapiḥ ।।6.77.13।।

parighēṇasamādhūtōyathābhūmicalē.calaḥ .


parighēṇa by the iron club, samādhūtaḥ with, saḥmahākapiḥ that great Vanara, tēna by that, prahārēṇa blow, bhūmicalē mountain in earthquake, acalaḥyathā not shake, vicacāla steady

The great Vanara did not move and remained steady like a mountain in an earthquake with the iron club touching him.
tathābhihatastēnahanumān plavagōttamaḥ ।।6.77.14।।

muṣṭiṅsamvartayāmāsabalēnātimahābalaḥ .


tēna by that, tathā like that, abhihataḥ struck, saḥhe, plavagōttamaḥ foremost of monkeys, atimahābalaḥextraordinary mighty, hanumān Hanuman, balēna by his strength, muṣṭim fist, samvartayāmāsa clenched violently

Struck by the Rakshasa, Hanuman, the foremost of the monkeys of extraordinary strength clenched his fist violently.
tamudyamyamahātējānikumbhōrasivīryavān ।।6.77.15।।

abhicikṣēpavēgēnavēgavān vāyuvikramaḥ .


mahātējāḥ highly energetic, vīryavān champion, vēgavān endowed with speed, vāyuvikramaḥ close to wind god in valour, tam those, udyamya raising, vēgēna speedily, nikumbhōrasi chest of Nikumbha, abhicikṣēpa crushed

Highly energetic champion endowed with speed, close to wind god in valour raising his fist instantly crushed Nikumbha on the chest.
tataḥpusphōṭacarmāsyaprasusrāva ca śōṇitam ।।6.77.16।।

muṣṭinātēnasañjajñēmēghēvidyudivōtthitā .


tēna, muṣṭinā by the fist, tata: then, asya his, carmapusphōṭa skin split, śōṇitaṅ ca even blood, prasusrāva started flowing, mēghē cloud, vidyut lightning, utthitāiva risen like, sañjajñē appeared

Then Nikumbha's skin split, and blood started flowing, which appeared as though lightning had risen in the cloud.
saḥtutēnaprahārēṇanikumbhōvicacāla ha ।।6.77.17।।

svasthaścāpinijagrāhahanūmantaṅmahābalam .


tēna by that, prahārēṇa blow, saḥ he, nikumbhaḥNikumbha, vicacāla ha not moved, svasthaścāpi recovering, mahābalam extraordinary strength, hanumantam Hanuman, nijagrāha caught hold of

By that blow, Nikumbha was not moved. Recovering from that he caught hold of Hanuman of extraordinary strength.
cukruśustadāsaṅkhyēbhīmaṅlaṅkānivāsinaḥ ।।6.77.18।।

nikumbhēnōdyataṅdṛṣṭavāhanūmantaṅmahābalam .


tadā then, saṅkhyē in combat, nikumbhēnaNikumbha's, udyatam lifting up, mahābalam endowed with might, hanūmantam Hanumantha, dṛṣṭavā seeing, laṅkānivāsinaḥ residents of Lanka, bhīmam terribly, vicukruśuḥ roared

Then seeing Hanuman endowed with might, lifted by Nikumbha in the battlefield the residents of Lanka roared terribly.
tadāhriyamāṇō.pikumbhakarṇātmajēna ha ।।6.77.19।।

ājaghānānilasutōvajrakalpēnamuṣṭinā .


tēna by that, tadā then, hriyamāṇaḥapi being carried also, anilasutaḥ son of windgod, kumbhakarṇātmajēna son of Kumbhakarna, vajrakalpēna with his hard adamant, muṣṭinā fist, ājaghāna hit him.

Even while being carried by Rakshasa also, the son of the wind god hit Kumbhakarna's son with his hard adamant fist.
ātmānaṅmōkṣayitvāthakṣitāvabhyavapadyata ।।6.77.20।।

hanūmānunmamāthāśunikumbhaṅmārutātmajaḥ .


mārutātmajaḥ son of windgod, hanūmān Hanuman, ātmānam himself, mōkṣayitvā getting released, atha now, kṣitau on ground, abhyapadyata springing up, āśu standing, nikumbham Nikumbha, unmamātha tormented

Hanuman, the son of wind god getting himself released from Nikumbha, springing up standing on the ground tormented Nikumbha.
nikṣipyaparamāyattōnikumbhaṅniṣpipēṣa ha ।।6.77.21।।

utpatyacāsyavēgēnapapātōrasivīryavān .


paramāyattaḥ with great effort, nikumbham Nikumbha, nikṣipya crushed down, niṣpipēṣa ha throwing down, vīrēna hero, utpatya springing up, vēgavān endowed with speed, asya his, urasi chest, papāta fell

Throwing down Nikumbha with great effort, Hanuman endowed with speed sprang up and fell on his chest.
parigṛhya ca bāhubhyāṅparivṛtyaśirōdharām ।।6.77.22।।

utpāṭayāmānaśirōbhairavaṅnadatōmahat .


bāhubhyām both arms, śirōdharām holding his neck, parigṛhya taking, parivṛtya twisting round, bhairavam terribly, nadataḥ crying, mahat great, śiraḥhead, utpāṭayāmānabroke off,

Taking hold of the neck with both arms and twisting it round Hanuman broke off the neck of Nikumbha while he was crying terribly.
athaninadatisāditēnikumbhēpavanasutēnaraṇēbabhūvayuddham .

daśarathasutarākṣasēndrasūnvōrbhṛśataramāgatarōṣayōssubhīmam ।।6.77.23।।


atha and then, ninadati crying aloud, nikumbhēNikumbha, raṇē in the battlefield, pavanasutēna by wind god's son, sāditē destroyed, bhṛśatam violent, āgatarōṣayōḥhighly perturbed, daśarathasutarākṣasēndrasūnvōḥDasharatha's son and Makara raksha (son of Khara), subhīmam fierce, yuddham war, babhūva happened

And thereafter as Nikumbha killed by windgod's son was crying aloud in the battlefield, a violent and fierce war took place between the highly disturbed son of Dasharatha and Rakshasa Makara.
vyapētētujīvēnikumbhasyahṛṣṭāvinēduḥplavaṅgādiśassasvanuśca .

cacālēvacōrvīpaphālēvacadyaurbhayaṅrākṣasānāṅbalaṅcāvivēśa ।।6.77.24।।


nikumbhasya Nikumbha's, jīvē life, vyapētē ceased, plavaṅgāḥ monkeys, hṛṣṭāḥ happy, vinēduḥjoy, diśaḥ quarters, sasvanuḥ ca resounded, urvī earth, cacālēvashaken, ca and, dyauḥ heaven, paphālēvaappeared to crumble, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, balam army, bhayam fear, āvivēśa ca overtaken

When Nikumbha's life ceased, monkeys were happy, and their joy resounded in all quarters. Earth was shaken, the Rakshasa army was overtaken by fear and heaven appeared to crumble.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēsaptasaptatitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the seventy seventh sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
