[Makara starts his encounter under Ravana's instructions.]

nikumbhaṅnihataṅśrutvākumbhaṅ ca vinipātitam .

rāvaṇaḥparamāmarṣīprajajvālānalōyathā ।।6.78.1।।


nikumbham Nikumbha, nihatam killed, kumbhaṅ ca Kumbha and, vinipātitam had been killed, śrutvā on hearing, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, paramāmarṣī very furious, analōyathā like fire, prajajvāla burning in anger

On hearing that Nikumbha and Kumbha had been killed, Ravana was very furious and burning in anger.
nairṛtaḥkrōdhaśōkābhyāṅdvābhyāṅtuparimūrchitaḥ .

kharaputraṅviśālākṣaṅmakarākṣamacōdayat ।।6.78.2।।


nairṛtaḥ Rakshasa king, krōdhaśōkābhyām overtaken by anger and sorrow, dvābhyām both, parimūrchitaḥbewildered excessively, viśālākṣam broad-eyed, kharaputram Khara's son, makarākṣam Makara Rakshasa, acōdayat sent for

The Rakshasa king was overtaken by both anger and sorrow, bewildered excessively sent for broadeyed Makara, the son of Khara.
gacchaputra.mayā.jājñaptōbalēnābhisamavanitaḥ .

rāghavaṅlakṣmaṇaṅcaivajahitāṅścavanaukasaḥ ।।6.78.3।।


putra son, mayā by me, ājñaptaḥcommand, abhisamavanitaḥ accompanied by army, gaccha going, vanaukasaḥ Vanaras, tāṅ them, rāghavam Raghava, lakṣmaṇaṅcaiva and Lakshman also, jahi kill

"Son! commanded by me, you go accompanied by arm and kill the Vanaras, Raghava and Lakshmana aslo,
rāvaṇasyavacaśśrutvāśūramānīkharātmajaḥ .

bāḍhamityabravīddhṛṣṭōmakarākṣōniśācaram ।।6.78.4।।


śūramānī proclaiming as hero, kharātmajaḥson of Khara, makarākṣaḥMaka raksha, vacaḥwords, śrutvā hearing, hṛṣṭaḥ rejoiced, niśācaram Rakshasa, bāḍham iti good, abravīt said

Rejoicing to hear the words of Ravana, proclaiming himself to be a hero, Maka raksha, the son of Khara said 'good'.
sō.bhivādyadaśagrīvaṅkṛtvācāpipradakṣiṇam .

nirjagāmagṛhācchubhrādrāvaṇasyājñayābalī ।।6.78.5।।


balī mighty, saḥhe, daśagrīvam tenheaded, abhivādya greeting, pradakṣiṇaṅkṛtvācāpi also going round him as tradition, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, ājñayā by order, śubhrāt early morning, gṛhāt from the abode, nirjagāma went out.

Greeting the tenheaded Rakshasa and going round him according to tradition, the mighty warrior went out from the abode early morning by the command of Ravana.
samīpasthaṅbalādhyakṣaṅkharaputrō.bravīdidam .

rathaścānīyatāṅśīghraṅsainyaṅtvānīyatāṅtvarāt ।।6.78.6।।


kharaputraḥKhara's son, samīpastham nearby, balādhakṣam commander-in-chief of the army, idam this, abravīt spoke, śīghram quickly, ratham chariot, ānīyatām brought, sainyam army, tvarāt quickly, ānīyatām proceed

Khara's son spoke to the commander-in-chief of the army standing nearby 'Let the chariot be brought quickly and the army proceed'.
tasyatadvacanaṅśrutvābalādhyakṣōniśācaraḥ .

syandanaṅ ca balaṅcaivasamīpaṅpratyapādayat .6.78.7।।


tasya his, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā hearing, balādhyakṣaḥ commander-in-chief, niśācaraḥ Rakshasas, syandanaṅ ca responded, balaṅcaiva army too, samīpam near, pratyapādayat placed near

Upon hearing those words, the commander-in-chief of the Rakshasas responded and placed the army near him.
pradakṣiṇaṅrathaṅkṛtvāārurōhaniśācaraḥ .

sūtaṅsañcōdayāmāsaśīghraṅmērathamāvaha ।।6.78.8।।


niśācaraḥ night ranger, ratham chariot, pradakṣiṇaṅkṛtvā after having gone round, sūtam charioteer, ārurōha ascended mēmy, rathamchariot, śīghram quickly, āvaha get, sañcōdayāmāsa drive the chariot

After having gone round the chariot he (Makara) ascended and said to the charioteer, 'let the chariot be driven quickly'.
athatānrākṣasānsarvānmakarākṣō.bravīdidam .

yūyaṅsarvēprayudhyadhvaṅpurastānmamarākṣasāḥ ।।6.78.9।।


atha and then, makarākṣaḥMaka raksha, tān his, sarvān all, rākṣasān Rakshasas, idam thus, abravīt spoke, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, yūyam all of you, sarvē all, mamamy, purastāt ahead, prayudhyadhvam fight violently

Thereafter, Maka raksha spoke to all Rakshasas, 'All of you be ahead of me and fight violently'.
ahaṅrākṣasarājēnarāvaṇēnamahātmanā .

ājñaptaḥsamarēhantuṅtāvubhaurāmalakṣmaṇau ।।6.78.10।।


aham I, rākṣasarājēna by Rakshasa king's, mahātmanā great self, rāvaṇēna to Ravana, samarē in battle, tau those, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, ubhau both, hantum will kill, ājñaptaḥ by his order

"I will kill both Rama and Lakshmana in the battle, by the order of Ravana, the king of Rakshasas."
adyarāmaṅvadhiṣyāmilakṣmaṇaṅ ca niśācarāḥ .

śākhāmṛgaṅ ca sugrīvaṅvānarāṅścaśarōttamaiḥ ।।6.78.11।।


niśācarāḥ night ranger, adya now, rāmam Rama, lakṣmaṇaṅ ca and Lakshmana, śākhāmṛgam Vanara, sugrīvaṅ ca Sugriva also, vānarān ca Vanaras also, śarōttamaiḥ best of arrows, vadhiṣyāmi will put an end

"Now I shall put an end to Rama and Lakshmana, Sugriva and the Vanaras with the best of arrows."
adyaśūlanipātaiścavānarāṇāṅmahācamūm .

pradahiṣyāmisamprāptāṅśuṣkēndhanamivānalaḥ ।।6.78.12।।


adya now, samprāptām going there, vānarāṇām Vanaras, mahācamūm great army, analaḥ fire, śuṣkēndhanamiva burns dry wood, śūlanipātaiḥ with these pikes, pradahiṣyāmi will burn

"Going there now, I will terminate the great Vanara army with these pikes just as drywood is burnt by fire."
makarākṣasyatacchrutvāvacanaṅtēniśācarāḥ .

sarvēnānāyudhōpētābalavantaḥsamāhitāḥ ।।6.78.13।।


makarākṣasyaMaka raksha, tat then, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, balavantaḥ mighty, tē they, niśācarāḥ Rakshasas, sarvē all, nānāyudhōpētāḥarmed with different weapons, samāhitāḥcame

On hearing Maka raksha's words all the mighty Rakshasas came with different kinds of weapons.
tēkāmarūpiṇassarēdaṅṣṭriṇaḥpiṅgalēkṣaṇā .

mātaṅgāivanardantōdhvastakēśābhayāvahāḥ ।।6.78.14।।

parivāryamahākāyāmahākāyaṅkharātmajam .

abhijaghnustatōhṛṣṭāścālayantōvasundharām ।।6.78.15।।


kāmarūpiṇaḥ who could change their form at will, krūrāḥ cruel, daṅṣṭriṇaḥ protruding teeth, piṅgalēkṣaṇāḥ yellow eyes, dhvastakēśāḥdishevelled hair, bhayāvahāḥfrightful appearance, mahākāyāḥ huge body size, tē they, tataḥ then, mātaṅgāḥiva like elephants, mahākāyam of huge size, kharātmajam son of Khara, parivārya surrounding, hṛṣṭāḥjoyously, vasundharām earth, cālayantaḥshaking, abhijaghnuḥwent forward

Those who could change their form at will, cruel, with protruding teeth, yellow eyes, dishevelled hair, of frightful appearance, huge like elephants surrounding the son of Khara went joyously forward shaking the earth.
śaṅkhabhērīsahasrāṇāmāhatānāṅsamantataḥ .

kṣyēḷitāsphōṭitānāṅ ca tatraśabdōmahānabhūt ।।6.78.16।।


tatra there, āhatānām beating of drums, śaṅkhabhērīsahasrāṇāmblowing of thousands of conches, kṣēvaḷitāsphōṭitānāṅ ca clappings of arms, mahān great, śabdhaḥ sound, samantataḥe very where, abhūt heard

There was a beating of drums, blowing of thousands of conchs, clapping of arms and great sound was heard.
prabhraṣṭō.thakarāttasyapratōdassārathēstadā .

papātasahasādaivāddhvajastasyaturakṣasaḥ ।।6.78.17।।


atha and there, tadā then, tasya his, sārathēḥcharioteer, karāt hand, pratōdaḥlong whip, prabhraṣṭaḥdropped down, tasyarakṣasaḥ that Rakshasa, dhvajaḥ standard, sahasāsuddenly, daivāt by divine will, papāta fallen

There, the long whip dropped from the charioteer's hand and the Rakshasa's standard had fallen suddenly by divine will.
tasyatērathasaṅyuktāhayāvikramavarjitāḥ .

caraṇairākulairgatvādīnāḥsāsramukhāyayuḥ ।।6.78.18।।


tasya his, rathasaṅyuktāḥ yoke binding the chariot, tē they, hayāḥhorses, vikramavarjitāḥgiven up their valour, ākulaiḥfaltering, caraṇaiḥ feet, gatvā going, dīnāḥdesperate, sāsramukhāḥ shedding tears, yayuḥwent

His horses yoked to the chariot went giving up their valour, faltering feet, desperate and shedding tears.
pravātipavanastasmin sapāṅsuḥkharadāruṇaḥ .

niryāṇētasyaraudrasyamakarākṣasyadurmatēḥ ।।6.78.19।।


raudrasya angry, durmatēḥ evil minded, tasyamakarākṣasya that Maka raksha, tasmin niryāṇē at his departure, sapāṅsuḥ crumbling dust, kharadāruṇaḥ dreadful and violent, pavanaḥ wind, pravāti blowed.

At the departure of evil minded and angry Maka raksha, dreadful and violent wind blew carrying with crumbling dust.
tānidṛṣṭavānimittānirākṣasāvīryavattamāḥ .

acintyanirgatāssarvēyatrataurāmalakṣmaṇau ।।6.78.20।।


vīryavattamāḥ exceedingly valiant, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, sarvē all, tāni them, nimittāni incidentally, dṛṣṭavā seeing, acintya not taking into account, tau those, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, yatra there, nirgatāḥwent

Seeing those portents incidentally and not taking into account those Rakshasas went where Rama and Lakshmana were.
ghanagajamahiṣāṅgatulyavarṇāssamaramakhēṣvasakṛdgadāsibhinnāḥ .

ahamahamitiyuddhakauśalāstērajanīcarāḥparibabhramurnadantaḥ ।।6.78.21।।


ghanagajamahiṣāṅgatulyavarṇāḥ who resembled elephants, clouds and buffaloes in colour, samaramukhēṣu to the forefront of war, asakṛt who were wounded, gadāsibhinnāḥ with maces and swords, yuddhakauśalāḥ skilled in warfare, tērajanīcarāḥ those night rangers, nadantaḥroaring, aham aham iti I shall fight, paribabhramuḥmoved to and from.

Those night rangers who resembled elephants, clouds, and buffaloes in colour, who were skilled in warfare, wounded by maces and swords, moved to and from saying" I shall fight",
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēaṣṭasaptatitamassargaḥ ।।
