[ Prahastha and others assure Ravana that they will kill Rama and others. ]

tatōnīlāmbudanibha: prahastōnāmarākṣasaḥ .

abravītprāñjalirvākyaṅśūrassēnāpatistadā ।।6.8.1।।


tataḥ then, śūraḥ hero, sēnāpatiḥ chief of army, nīlāmbudanibha: one whose body is like dark cloud, prahastōnāma: called Prahastha, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, vākyam these words. abravīt spoke.

Then a Rakshasa whose body was like a dark cloud, called Prahastha, the heroic chief of the army, spoke these words with folded palms.
dēvadānavagandharvāḥpiśācapatagōragāḥ .

natvāṅdharṣayituṅśakyāḥkiṅpunarvānarāraṇē ।।6.8.2।।


dēvadānavagandharvāḥ Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, piśācapatagōragāḥ Devils, birds and even serpents, sarvē: all, raṇē: in war, dharṣayitum to face you, naśakyāḥ not possible, vānarā: Vanaras, kiṅpunaḥ What to say.

"Even Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, Devils, birds, and serpents, cannot face you in war. What to say of Vanaras?"
sarvēpramattāviśvastāvañcitāssmahanūmatā .

nahimējīvatōgacchējjīvan savanagōcaraḥ ।।6.8.3।।


apramattā: inattentive, viśvastāḥ confident, sarvē: all of us, hanūmatā: Hanuman, vañcitāḥsma: cheated us, mē: when I, jīvataḥ living, saḥ he, vanagōcaraḥ wanderer of woods, jīvan with life, nagacchēt hi: will not go.

All of us were inattentive and confident (of our ability) while Hanuman cheated us. When I am alive how will the wanderer of woods (Hanuman) go with life?
sarvāṅsāgaraparyantāṅsaśailavanakānanām .

karōmyavānarāṅbhūmimājñāpayatumāṅbhavān ।।6.8.4।।


sāgaraparyantām all over the ocean, saśailavanakānanām in the mountains and forests, sarvām entire, bhūmim the earth, avānarām rid of Vanaras, karōmi: will do, bhavān your, mām me, ājñāpayatu: if you order

"I will make all the oceans, mountains, forests or even the entire earth rid of Vanaras if you order me."
rakṣāṅcaivavidhāsyāmivānarādrajanīcara .

nāgamiṣyatitēduḥkhaṅkiñcidātmāparādhajam ।।6.8.5।।


rajanīcara: O! night ranger (Ravana), vānarāt by these Vanaras, rakṣāṅcaiva: will protect, vidhāsyāmi: I will arrange, tē: by you, ātmāparādhajam your own wrong action, duḥkham grief, kiñcit even a little, nāgamiṣyati: not undergo

"O night ranger (Ravana)! I will arrange the protection (of this Lanka) from these Vanaras. For your own wrong action (of abducting Sita) you cannot undergo suffering."
abravīccasusaṅkṛddhōdurmukhōnāmarākṣasaḥ .

idaṅnakṣamaṇīyaṅhisarvēṣāṅnaḥpradharṣaṇam ।।6.8.6।।


durmukhōnāma: called Durmukha, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, susaṅkṛddha: feeling very angry, ca:
and, abravīt said, naḥ nay, sarvēṣām for all of us, idam this, pradharṣaṇam shame, nakṣamaṇīyaṅhi: not deserve to be excused.

Feeling very angry, a Rakshasa called Durmukha said, "He who has caused shame for all of us does not deserve to be excused."
ayaṅparibhavōbhūyaḥpurasyāntaḥpurasyaca .

śrīmatōrākṣasēndrasyavānarēṇapradharṣaṇam ।।6.8.7।।


purasya: to Lanka, antaḥpurasyaca: and to the royal residence, ayam this, paribhavaḥ despising, śrīmataḥ one who is prosperous, rākṣasēndrasya: to the Lord of Rakshasas, vānarēṇa: by Vanara, pradharṣaṇam assaulting, bhūyaḥ Furthermore.

"Furthermore, this assault by a Vanara on Lanka, to the royal residence, and to the prosperous Lord of Rakshasas is despising."
asmin muhūrtēgatvaikōnivartiṣyāmivānarān .

praviṣṭān sāgaraṅbhīmamambaraṅvārasātalam ।।6.8.8।।


asmin this, muhūrtē: very minute, ēkaḥ alone, gatva: going, sāgaram ocean, bhīmam terrific, rasātalam the underworld, ambaraṅvā: or the upper world, praviṣṭān entering, vānarān the monkey, nivartiṣyāmi: I will put an end.

At this very minute I will go alone into the terrific ocean, to the underworld or the upper world and on entering put an end to the monkey.
tatō.bravītsusaṅkṛddhōvajradaṅṣṭrōmahābalaḥ .

pragṛhyaparighaṅghōraṅmāṅsaśōṇitarūṣitam ।।6.8.9।।


tataḥ then, mahābala: mighty, vajradaṅṣṭraḥ one who has diamond like strong teeth,
susaṅkṛddha: highly enraged, māṅsaśōṇitarūṣitam stained with flesh and blood, ghōram dreadful, parigham iron bludgeon, pragṛhya: clasping, abravīt spoke.

Then a mighty strong one who was endowed with diamond like teeth highly enraged, clasping a dreadful iron bludgeon stained with flesh and blood spoke.
kiṅvōhanumatākāryaṅkṛpaṇēnatapasvinā .

rāmētiṣṭhatidurdharṣēsasugrīvē.pisalakṣmaṇē ।।6.8.10।।


durdharṣē: one who is unassailable, rāmē: while Rama, salakṣmaṇē: along with Lakshmana, sasugrīvē.pi: and also Sugriva, tiṣṭhati: is there, kṛpaṇēna: pitiable tapasvinā: helpless, hanumatā: with Hanuman, va: for us, kāryam work, kim what.

"While unassailable Rama is there, along with Lakshmana and Sugriva, what have we to do with miserable, pitiable and helpless Hanuman?"
adyarāmaṅsasugrīvaṅparighēṇasalakṣmaṇam .

āgamiṣyāmihatvaikōvikṣōbhyaharivāhinīm ।।6.8.11।।


adya: now, ēkaḥ alone, parighēṇa: by the iron crow bar, sasugrīvavam that Sugriva, salakṣmaṇam and that Lakshmana, rāmam and Rama also, hatvā: killing, harivāhinīm Vanara troops, vikṣōbhya: after shattering, āgamiṣyāmi: would return.

"Now I would go alone and with the iron crowbar, kill Sugriva Lakshmana and Rama and return after shattering the Vanara troops."
idaṅmamāparaṅvākyaṅśṛṇurājan yadīcchasi .

upāyakuśalōhyēvajayēcchatrūnatandritaḥ ।।6.8.12।।


rājan O king, yadiicchasi: if you like, mama: my, aparam another, idaṅvākyam this statement, śṛṇu: you listen, upāyakuśalaḥēva: only one who is cunning, atandritaḥ one who is vigilant, śatrūn enemy, jayēt hi: would win.

"O King! If you like, listen to my other statement: One who is cunning and is vigilant would win over an enemy."
kāmarūpadharāśśūrāssubhīmābhīmadarśanāḥ .

rākṣasāvaisahasrāṇirākṣasādhipaniścitāḥ ।।6.8.13।।

kākutsthamupasaṅgamyabibhratōmānuṣaṅvapuḥ .

sarvēhyasambhramābhūtvābruvanturaghusattamam ।।6.8.14।।


rākṣasādhipa: Lord of Rakshasas, kāmarūpadharāḥ one who is capable of assuming any form at free will, śūrāḥ hero, subhīmāḥ very fearful, bhīmadarśanāḥ of frightful appearance, sahasrāṇi: thousands of, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, niścitāḥ determined, mānuṣam human, vapuḥ body, bibhrataḥ wearing, kākutstham of Kakutstha dynasty, upasaṅgamya: going near, sarvē: all, asambhramāḥ without any agitation, raghusattamam the foremost of Raghu dynasty, bruvantu: should tell.

"O Lord of Rakshasas! Thousands of fearful Rakshasas capable of assuming any form at free will, heroic ones of frightful appearance should tell Rama the foremost of Raghus, quietly going near him in human form."
prēṣitābharatēnaivabhrātrātavayavīyasā .

sahisēnāṅsamutthāpyakṣipramēvōpayāsyati ।।6.8.15।।


tava: your, yavīyasā: younger, bhrātrā: brother, bharatēnaiva: by Bharata, prēṣitāḥ sent by, saḥ he, sēnām army, samutthāpya: taking, kṣipramēva: very soon, upasthāsyati: is coming.

"'We have been sent by your younger brother Bharata and he is coming here very soon with the army."
tatōvayamitastūrṇaṅśūlaśaktigadādharāḥ .

cāpabāṇāsihastāścatvaritāstatrayāmahē ।।6.8.16।।


tataḥ then, vayam we, śūlaśaktigadādharāḥ tridents, javelins and maces, cāpabāṇāsi: swords and arrows, hastāśca: wielding, itaḥ from here, tūrṇam soon, tatra: there, tvaritāḥ quickly, yāmahē: will go.

"Then from here we will go there wielding tridents, javelins, maces, swords and arrows."
ākāśēgaṇaśasthsitvāhatvātāṅharivāhinīm .

aśmaśastramahāvṛṣṭyāprāpayāmayamakṣayam ।।6.8.17।।


ākāśē: from the sky, gaṇaśaḥ in groups, sthitvā: staying there, tām those, harivāhinīm Vanara troops, aśmaśastramahāvṛṣṭyā: astras, sastras, boulders, hatvā: killing, yamakṣayam to the abode of Yama, prāpayāma: will send

Staying in the sky in groups, we will rain astras, sastras and boulders on the Vanara troops and on killing them, we shall send them to the abode of God of death.
ēvaṅcēdupasarpētāmanayaṅrāmalakṣmaṇau .

avaśyamapanītēnajahatāmēvajīvitam ।।6.8.18।।


rāmalakṣmaṇau: Rama and Lakshmana, ēvam that way, anayam distressed, upasarpētāṅyadi: they will succumb, avaśyamēva: certainly, apanītēna: cunning ways, jīvitam: life, jahatāmēva: giving up.

"When Rama and Lakshmana are distressed that way, they would certainly succumb to our cunning ways and give up life."
kaumbhakarṇistatōvīrōnikumbhōnāmavīryavān .

abravītparamakruddhōrāvaṇaṅlōkarāvaṇam ।।6.8.19।।


tataḥ thereafter, kaumbhakarṇiḥ Son of Kumbhakarna, vīraḥ hero, vīryavān valiant, nikumbhōnāma: called Nikumbha, paramakruddha: highly enraged, lōkarāvaṇam one who makes the world cry, rāvaṇam Ravana, abravīt said.

Thereafter the enraged heroic and valiant son of Kumbhakarna called Nikumbha said to Ravana, who made the world cry.
sarvēbhavantastiṣṭhantumahārājēnasaṅgatāḥ .

ahamēkōhaniṣyāmirāghavaṅsahalakṣmaṇam ।।6.8.20।।

sugrīvañcahanūmantaṅsarvāṅnēvacavānarān .


bhavantaḥ of you, sarvē: all, mahārājēna: King's, saṅgatāḥ along with, tiṣṭhantu: stay here, aham I, ēkaḥ alone, sahalakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, rāghavam that Rama, sahānūmantam and with Hanuman, sugrīvaṅca: Sugriva also, sarvānēva: everyone, vānarān: those Vanaras, ca also, haniṣyāmi will kill.

"Let all of you stay here along with the king. Going alone I will kill Rama along with Lakshmana, and Hanuman also Sugriva and all of the Vanaras."
tatōvajrahanurnāmarākṣasaḥparvatōpamaḥ ।।6.8.21।।

kruddha: parilihansṛkkāṅjihvayāvākyamabravīt .


tataḥ then, parvatōpamaḥ one of mountain like form, vajrahanurnāma Vajrahanu, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, kruddha: angry, jihvayā: with tongue, sṛkkām lips, parilihan licking, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Then a Rakshasa called Vajrahanu, mountain like in form, enraged, licking lips with his tongue said these words.
svairaṅkurvantukarmāṇibhavantōvigatajvarāḥ ।।6.8.22।।

ēkō.haṅbhakṣayiṣyāmitāṅsarvāṅhariyūthapān .

svasthāḥkrīḍantuniścintāḥpibantumadhuvāruṇīm ।।6.8.23।।


bhavantaḥ all of you, vigatajvarāḥ giving up fear, svairam freely, karmāṇi: duties kurvantu: doing, svasthāḥ moving happily, krīḍantu: sporting, niścintāḥ without any anxiety, vāruṇaṅmadhu: sweet wine, pibantu: drinking, aham I, ēkaḥ single handed, tām them, sarvām all, hariyūthapān Vanara army, bhakṣayiṣyāmi: will consume.

All of you giving up fear, do your duties freely move happily sporting and drinking sweet wine. Single handed, I will consume all the Vanara army.
ahamēkōvadhiṣyāmisugrīvaṅsahalakṣmaṇam .

sāṅgadaṅcahanūmantaṅrāmaṅcaraṇakuñjaram ।।6.8.24।।


aham I, ēkaḥ alone, sahalakṣmaṇam with Lakshmana, sugrīvam and Sugriva, sāṅgadam that Angada, hanūmantam Hanuman, raṇakuñjaram army, rāmam ca: and Rama, vadhiṣyāmi: will kill.

"I alone will kill that Rama with Lakshmana, Sugriva, that Angada, Hanuman and the Vanara army."
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēaṣṭamassargaḥ।।
