[Indrajith reenters the battlefield and kills an illusory image of Sita placed in his chariot in the presence of Hanuman. Argument between Indrajithand Hanuman.]

विज्ञायतुमनस्तस्यराघवस्यमहात्मनः ।

स निवृत्याहवात्तस्मात् प्रविवेशपुरींततः ।।6.81.1।।


सः he, महात्मनः highsouled, तस्यराघवस्य that Raghava's, मनः mind, विज्ञाय victory, तस्मात् therefore, आहवात् from there, निवृत्य departed, ततः there, पुरीम् city, प्रविवेश entered

Knowing the highsouled Raghava's mind, Indrajith departed from there and entered the city.
सोऽनुस्मृत्यवधंतेषांराक्षसानांतरस्विनाम् ।

क्रोधताम्रेक्षणश्शूरोनिर्जगामाहाद्युति: ।।6.81.2।।


शूरः hero, सःमहाद्युति: mighty Rakshasa, तरस्विनाम् courageous, तेषांराक्षसानाम्those Rakshasas, वधम् killed, अनुस्मृत्य recollecting, क्रोधताम्रेक्षणः eyes turned red in anger, निर्जगाम went

Recollecting those Rakshasas killed, the heroic, mighty and courageous Indrajith's eyes were red in anger.
स पश्चिमेवद्वारेणनिर्ययौराक्षसैर्वृतः ।

इन्द्रजित्सुमहावीर्यःपौलस्त्योदेवकण्टकः ।।6.81.3।।


सुमहावीर्यः stupendous hero, देवकण्टकः tormentor of Devatas, पौलस्त्यः Paulastya, सःइन्द्रजित् that Indrajith, राक्षसैः by Rakshasas, वृतः surrounded, पश्चिमेनद्वारेण through the western gate, निर्ययौ came out

Paulastya (one of the nine mind born sons of Brahma, a scion of sage Paulastya), stupendous hero, a tormentor of Devatas, Indrajith, surrounded by Rakshasas came out through the western gate.
इन्द्रजित्तुततोदृष्टवाभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।

रणायाभ्युद्यतौवीरौमायांप्रादुष्करोत्तदा ।।6.81.4।।


इन्द्रजित् तुIndrajith also, ततः there, वीरौheroes, भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, रणाय for war, अभ्युद्यतौ prepared, दृष्ट्या witnessing, तदा then, मायाम् by conjuring, प्रादुष्करोत्exhibited

Indrajith, also witnessing the two brothers Rama and Lakshmana prepared for war, exhibited his trickery.
इन्द्रजित्तुरथेस्थाप्यसीतांमायामयींतदा ।

बलेनमहतावृत्यतस्यावधमरोचयत् ।।6.81.5।।

मोहनार्थंतुसर्वेषांबुद्धिंकृत्वासुदुर्मतिः ।

हन्तुंसीतांव्यवसितोवानराभिमुखोययौ ।।6.81.6।।


सुदुर्मतिः evil minded, सर्वेषाम् every one, मोहनार्थम् to hoodwink, बुद्धिम् in his mind, कृत्वा did, सीताम् Sita, हन्तुम् to kill, व्यवसितः decided, वानराभिमुखः towards Vanaras, ययौ went

Evil minded Indrajith, made up his mind to hoodwink every one who decided to kill Sita and went towards the Vanaras.
तम्दृष्टवात्वभिनिर्यान्तंसर्वेतेकाननौकसः ।

उत्पेतुरभिसङ्क्रुद्धाश्शिलाहस्तायुयुत्सवः ।।6.81.7।।


सर्वे all, ते of them, काननौकसः forest animals, अभिनिर्यान्तम् coming towards, तम् him, दृष्टवा observing, अभिसङ्क्रुद्धाः very angry, शिलाहस्ताः holding rocks in hand, युयुत्सवः enthusiastically, उत्पेतुः faced

All the forest animals perceiving Indrajithadvancing became angry and with rocks in hand faced him with enthusiasm.
हनूमान् पुरतस्तेषांजगामकपिकुञ्जरः ।

प्रगृह्यसुमहच्छृङ्गंपर्वतस्यदुरासदम् ।।6.81.8।।


कपिकुञ्जरः elephant among monkeys, हनूमान् Hanuman, पर्वतस्य mountain, सुदुरासदम् difficult to reach, सुमहत् huge, शृङ्गम् peak, प्रगृह्य taking hold, तेषाम् marched, पुरतःforward, जगाम went

Hanuman, the elephant among monkeys, taking hold of a huge mountain peak that was difficult to reach marched forward and went.
स ददर्शहतानन्दांसीतामिन्द्रजितोरथे ।

एकवेणीधरांदीनामुपवासकृशाननाम् ।।6.81.9।।

परिक्लिष्टैकवसनाममृजांराघवप्रियाम् ।

रजोमलाभ्यामालिप्तैस्सर्वगात्रैर्वरस्त्रियम् ।।6.81.10।।


सः he, इन्द्रजितः Indrajith, रथे chariot, हतानन्दाम् cheerless, एकवेणीधराम् with one braid, दीनाम् piteous, उपवासकृशाननाम् emaciated with fasting, परिक्लिष्टैकवसनाम् wearing only one cloth, अमृजाम् with no desire to live, रजोमलाभ्याम् covered with dust and mud, आलिप्तै: without any anointment, सर्वगात्रैः all over body, वरस्त्रियम् dear, राघवप्रियाम् wife of Raghava, सीताम् Sita, ददर्श saw

Hanuman beheld in the chariot of Indrajith, cheerless Sita with one braid, with no desire to live, emaciated by fasting, wearing a single cloth, body not anointed, covered with dust and dirt all over the body, who was dear to Raghava.
तांनिरीक्ष्यमुहूर्तंतुमैथिलीत्यध्यवस्यतु ।

बभूवाचिरदृष्टाहितेनसाजनकात्मजा ।।6.81.11।।


मुहूर्तम् for a moment, ताम् her, निरीक्ष्य looked at, मैथिलीति Mythili, अध्ववस्यतु recognise, बभूवconcluded, तेन therefore, सा she, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, चिरदृष्टाहिseen not before long

He looked at her for a moment and recognised her as Janaka's daughter since he had seen her not long before.
अब्रवीत्तांतुशोकार्तांनिरानन्दांतपस्विनीम् ।

दृष्टवारथोस्थितांदृष्ट्वाराक्षसेन्द्रसुतश्रिताम् ।।6.81.12।।

कंसमर्थितमस्येतिचिन्तयन्समहाकपिः ।

सहतैर्वानरश्रेष्ठैरभ्यधावतरावणिम् ।।6.81.13।।


सःमहाकपिः that great Vanara, शोकार्ताम् miserable, निरानन्दाम् joyless, तपस्विनीम् ascetic woman, राक्षसेन्द्रसुतश्रिताम् under the sway of the son of the king of Rakshasas, ताम् her, दृष्टवा gazing, अस्य her, किम् why, समर्थितम् seated, इति thus, अब्रवीत् spoke, चिन्तयन् worried, तैः with those, वानरश्रेष्ठैःसह best of Vanaras रावणिम् son of Ravana, अभ्यधावत rushed

Great Vanara, Hanuman, gazing at miserable, joyless, ascetic woman seated in the chariot, worried, why she is in the chariot. He spoke to the best of Vanara leaders and rushed towards the son of Ravana with them.
तद्वानरबलंदृष्टवारावणिःक्रोधमूर्छितः ।

कृत्वाविकोशंनिस्त्रिंशंमूर्ध्निसीतामकर्षयत् ।।6.81.14।।


रावणिः Indrajith, तत् there, वानरबलम् Vanara army, दृष्टवा seeing, क्रोधमूर्छितः deluded with anger, निस्त्रिंशम् unsheathed, विकोशम् sword, कृत्वा did, सीताम् Sita, मूर्ध्नि forehead, अकर्षयत् touched

Indrajith saw the Vanara army coming towards him, deluded with anger, unsheathed the sword and touched Sita's forehead.
तांस्त्रियंपश्यतांतेषांताडयामासरावणि: ।

क्रोशन्तींरामरामेतिमाययायोजितांरथे ।।6.81.15।।


रावणि: Indrajith, तेषाम् of them, पश्यताम् as they were looking, मायया trickishly, रथे on the chariot, योजिताम् constructed, रामरामेतिO Rama Rama, क्रोशन्तीम् crying, तांस्त्रियम् stood, ताडयामासhit her

As they were looking at Sita on the chariot trickishly constructed, and she was crying saying, 'O Rama, O Rama', he stood and hit her.
गृहीतमूर्धजांदृष्टवाहनुमान् दैन्यमागतः ।

शोकजंवारिनेत्राभ्यामुत्सृजन्मारुतात्मजः ।।6.81.16।।


मारुतात्मजः Maruti's son, हनुमान् Hanuman, गृहीतमूर्धजाम् holding her head, दृष्टवा seeing, दैन्यम् piteously, आगतःdropped, नेत्राभ्याम् from his eyes, शोकजम् tears, वारि heroic, उत्सृजम् tears of sorrow

Seeing Indrajith holding Sita's head, Maruti's son, was immersed in grief, and shed tears of sorrow from his eyes.
तांदृष्टवाचारुसर्वाङ्गींरामस्यमहिषींप्रियाम् ।

अब्रवीत्पुरुषंवाक्यंक्रोधाद्रक्षोधिपात्मजम् ।।6.81.17।।


चारुसर्वाङ्गीम् one with lovely limbs, रामस्य Rama's, प्रियाम् dear, महिषीम् wife, ताम् her, दृष्टवा looking, क्रोधात् in anger, रक्षोधिपात्मजम् Rakshasa king's son, परुषम् harsh, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत्rebuked

Looking at Rama's dear wife, of lovely limbs, Hanuman rebuked Indrajith in anger and spoke harsh words.
दुरात्मन्नात्मनाशायकेशपक्षेपरामृशः ।

ब्रह्मर्षीणांकुलेजातोराक्षसींयोनिमाश्रितः ।।6.81.18।।


दुरात्मन् evil minded, ब्रह्मर्षीणाम् seers of vedic mantras, कुले clan, जातःborn, राक्षसीम् Rakshasa woman, योनिम् womb, आश्रितःsought, आत्मनाशाय for selfdestruction, केशपक्षे hair, परामृशःseized

"O evil minded Indrajith! You are born as Rakshasa in the clan of seers of vedic mantras and sought the womb of Rakshasa woman. It is for your own self destruction you seized her hair.
धिक्त्वांपापसमाचारंयस्यतेमतिरिदृशी ।

नृशंसानार्य दुर्वृत्त क्षुद्र पापपराक्रम ।।6.81.19।।

अनार्यस्येदृशंकर्मघृणातेनास्तिनिर्घृण ।


नृशंशनार्य ignoble, दुर्वृत्तcruel, क्षुद्रmean, पापपराक्रम of sinful prowess, निर्घृण not merciful, यस्य such, ते by you, मतिः mind, ईदृशीresolve, पापसमाचारम्sinful action, त्वाम् your, दिक् direction, अनार्यस्य not noble, ते to you, कर्म action, ईदृशम् this manner, घृणाcompassion, नास्ति not there

"You are ignoble, mean, of sinful prowess, not merciful. You have resolved to take such a sinful action which is not worthy of you. You have no compassion to act in this manner."
च्युतागृहाच्चराज्याच्चरामहस्ताच्चमैथिली ।।6.81.20।।

किंतवैषापराद्धाहियदेनांहन्तुमिच्छसि ।


मैथिली Mythili, गृहाच्च from home, राज्याच्च from kingdom, रामहस्ताच्च from Rama's protection, च्युता distanced, निर्दय unkind, एनाम् this way, हन्तुम् यत् hitting, एषा like this, तव you, किम् what, अपराद्धाहिharm has she done

"This Mythili is sent away from home, from the kingdom, and also distanced from Rama's protection. You are unkind and hitting in this way. What harm has she done?"
सीतांहत्वातु न चिरंजीविष्यसिकथञ्चन ।।6.81.21।।

वधार्हकर्मणानेनममहस्तगतोह्यसि ।


सीताम् Sita, हत्वा after killing, कथञ्चन indeed, चिरम् long time, न जीविष्यसि will not live, वदार्हdeserve to be killed, अनेन many, कर्मणा actions, मम my, हस्तगतः into my hand s, असिहिcome

"Indeed, you will not live long after killing Sita. You deserve to be killed for your actions, that is why you have come into my hands."
येच स्त्रीघातिनांलोकालोकवध्यैषुकुसतिताः ।।6.81.22।।

इहजीवितमुत्सृज्यप्रेत्यतान्प्रतिपत्स्यसे ।


लोकवध्येषु worthy to be killed by the world, इह here, जीवितम् life, उत्सृज्य giving up, प्रेत्यafter death, एषु with them, स्त्रीघातिनाम् one who kills woman, ये such you, कुसतिताःthrown, लोकाः world, तान् those, प्रतिपत्स्यसे descend

"You deserve to be killed by the world here. Giving up your life, you will be thrown out and descend to the world with those who killed women have gone, after your death."
तिब्रुवाणोहनुमान् सायुधैर्हरिभिर्वृतः ।।6.81.23।।

अभ्यदावत् ससुङ्कृद्धोराक्षसेन्द्रसुतंप्रति ।


हनुमान् Hanuman, इति thus, ब्रुवाणः speaking, सायुधैःprepared for war, हरिभिः with monkeys, वृतःsurrounded, ससुङ्कृद्धःhighly enraged, राक्षसेन्द्रसुतंप्रति towards Rakshasa king's son, अभ्यधावत् went

Hanuman was highly enraged and speaking like got prepared for war and went surrounded by the monkeys towards Indrajith, the son of Rakshasa king.
पतन्तंमहावीर्यंतदनीकंवनौकसाम् ।।6.81.24।।

रक्षसांभीमकोपानामनीकंतुन्यवारयत् ।


आपतन्तम् intercepted, महावीर्यम् of mighty prowess, वनौकसाम् wood dwellers (Vanaras ), तत् अनीकम् that army troops, भीमकोपानाम् terribly angry, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, अनीकम् army, न्यवारयत् advancing

Rakshasa army troops of mighty prowess, terribly angry, were advancing towards wood dwellers (Vanara troops) and were intercepted by the Vanara troops.
सःतांबाणसहस्रेणविक्षोभ्यहरिवाहिनीम् ।।6.81.25।।

हनूमन्तंहरिश्रेष्ठमिन्द्रजित् प्रत्युवाच ह ।


सः he, इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, तांहरिवाहिनीम् that army of monkeys, बाणसहस्रेण with thousand arrows, विक्षोभ्य shattered, हरिश्रेष्ठम् foremost of monkey, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, प्रत्युवाच ह replied again

Indrajith shattered the army of monkeys with a thousand arrows. Hanuman the foremost Vanara replied to them as follows.
सुग्रीवस्त्वं च रामश्चयन्निमित्तमिहागताः ।।6.81.26।।

तांवधिष्यामिवैदेहीमद्यैवतवपश्यतः ।


सुग्रीवः Sugriva, त्वं च you also, रामश्च and Rama, यन्निमित्तम् for their sake, इह here, आगताः come, ताम् them, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, तव your, पश्यतः keep seeing, अद्यैवtoday, वधिष्यामि will kill

"I will kill your Vaidehi today as you keep seeing her for whose sake Sugriva, you and Rama also came here," said Indrajith.
इमांहत्वाततोरामंलक्ष्मणंत्वां च वानर ।।6.81.27।।

सुग्रीवं च वधिष्यामितंचानार्यंविभीषणम् ।


वानर Vanara, इमाम् this day, हत्वा killing, ततः thereafter, रामम् Rama, लक्ष्मणं च and Lakshmana, त्वां च and you, सुग्रीवं च also Sugriva, अनार्यम् ignoble, तंविभीषणं च that Vibheeshana, वधिष्यामि will kill

"O Vanara! This day, having killed her, I will kill Rama, Lakshmana, and you, also Sugriva and that ignoble Vibheeshana."
न हन्तव्याःस्त्रियश्चेतियद् ब्रवीषिप्लवङ्गम ।।6.81.28।।

पीडाकरममित्राणांयत्स्यात्कर्तव्यमेवतत् ।


प्लवङ्गम monkey, स्त्रियः woman, न हन्तव्याःइति not to be killed, यत् by that, यत् who ever, अमित्राणाम् enemy, पीडाकरम् causes trouble, स्यात् to be done, तत् that, कर्तव्यमेव that action alone

"O Hanuman! You said women should not be killed. But whoever causes trouble to the enemy, action should be taken, said Indrajith."
तमेवमुक्त्वारुदतींसीतांमयामयीं च ताम् ।।6.81.29।।

शितधारेणखङ्गेननिजघानेन्द्रजित्स्वयम् ।


इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, तम् him, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वाspoken, रुदतीम् crying, मायामयीम् illusory, तांसीताम् Sita, स्वयम् himself, शितधारेण with sharpedged, खङ्गेन sword, निजघानkillled

Indrajith having spoken like that killed that crying illusory Sita with a sharpedged sword.
यज्ञोपवीतमार्गेणभिन्नातेनतपस्विनी ।।6.81.30।।

सापृथिव्यांपृथुश्रोणीपपातप्रियदर्शना ।


तेन by that, यज्ञोपवीतमार्गेण diagonally in the direction of sacred thread worn on chest, भिन्ना split, तपस्विनी ascetic woman, पृथुश्रोणी of charming hips, प्रियदर्शना of pleasing countenance, सा sank पृथिव्याम् sank into the ground

Split diagonally, the ascetic woman with charming hips and pleasing countenance sank into the ground.
त्तामिन्द्रजित् स्त्रियंहत्वाहनूमन्तमुवाच ह ।।6.81.31।।

मयारामस्यपश्येमांकोपेन च ।

एषाविशस्तावैदेहीनिष्फलोवःपरिश्रमः ।।6.81.32।।


इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, ताम् that, स्त्रियम् woman, हत्वा killing, हनूमन्तम् Hanuamantha, कोपेन च angry, उवाच ह said, मया by me, शस्त्रनिषूदिताम् destroyed with sword, इमाम् this, रामस्य Rama's, पश्य see, एषा that way, च and, वैदेही Vaidehi, विशस्ता cut up, वःher, परिश्रमःexertion, निष्फलःuseless

Indrajith killed that woman and said to Hanuman" see this Vaidehi, Rama's wife, cut up by my sword. Your exertion is useless now."
ततःखडगेनमहताहत्वातामिन्द्रजित् स्वयम् ।

हृष्टस्सरथमास्थायननाद च महास्वनम् ।।6.81.33।।


सःइन्द्रजित् that Indrajith, महता long, खडगेन sword, स्वयम् by himself, ताम् her, हत्वा killed, ततः then, हृष्टःjoyful, रथम् chariot, आस्थाय ascended, महास्वनम् loud tone, ननादच roared

Indrajith himself with his long sword killed her, then rejoiced, he ascended the chariot and roared in a loud tone.
वानराश्शुश्रुवुश्शब्दमदूरेप्रत्यवस्थिताः ।

व्यादितास्यस्यनदतस्तद्दुर्गंसंश्रितस्यतु ।।6.81.34।।


व्यादितास्यस्य waiting for the war, तत् those, दुर्गम् difficult, संश्रितस्य to access, नदतः roaring, शब्दम् sound, अदूरे not far, प्रत्यवस्थिताः to enter, वानराः Vanaras, शुश्रुवुःheard

The sound of his roar was heard by the Vanaras waiting for war standing not far from there, which was difficult for Indrajith to access.
तथातुसीतांविनिहत्यदुर्मतिःप्रहृष्टचेतास्सबभूवरावणिः ।

तंहृष्टरूपंसमुदीक्ष्यवानराविषण्णरूपास्सहसाप्रददुद्रुवुः ।।6.81.35।।


दुर्मतिः evil minded, सःरावणिः that son of Ravana, सीताम् at Sita, तथा like that, विनिहत्य killing, प्रहृष्टचेताः happy at heart बभूव was, वानराःVanara, हृष्टरूपम् happy form, तम् of him, समुदीक्ष्य witnessing, विषण्णरूपाः sorrowful form, सहसा all at once, प्रददुद्रुवुःstarted running

The evil minded son of Ravana was happy at heart after killing Sita. Witnessing the happy form of Indrajith, the sorrowful Vanaras started running all at once.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेएकाशीतितमस्सर्गः ।।
