[Indrajith re-enters the battlefield and kills an illusory image of Sita placed in his chariot in the presence of Hanuman. Argument between Indrajithand Hanuman.]

vijñāyatumanastasyarāghavasyamahātmanaḥ .

sa nivṛtyāhavāttasmāt pravivēśapurīṅtataḥ ।।6.81.1।।


saḥ he, mahātmanaḥ high-souled, tasyarāghavasya that Raghava's, manaḥ mind, vijñāya victory, tasmāt therefore, āhavāt from there, nivṛtya departed, tataḥ there, purīm city, pravivēśa entered

Knowing the high-souled Raghava's mind, Indrajith departed from there and entered the city.
sō.nusmṛtyavadhaṅtēṣāṅrākṣasānāṅtarasvinām .

krōdhatāmrēkṣaṇaśśūrōnirjagāmāhādyuti: ।।6.81.2।।


śūraḥ hero, saḥmahādyuti: mighty Rakshasa, tarasvinām courageous, tēṣāṅrākṣasānāmthose Rakshasas, vadham killed, anusmṛtya recollecting, krōdhatāmrēkṣaṇaḥ eyes turned red in anger, nirjagāma went

Recollecting those Rakshasas killed, the heroic, mighty and courageous Indrajith's eyes were red in anger.
sa paścimēvadvārēṇaniryayaurākṣasairvṛtaḥ .

indrajitsumahāvīryaḥpaulastyōdēvakaṇṭakaḥ ।।6.81.3।।


sumahāvīryaḥ stupendous hero, dēvakaṇṭakaḥ tormentor of Devatas, paulastyaḥ Paulastya, saḥindrajit that Indrajith, rākṣasaiḥ by Rakshasas, vṛtaḥ surrounded, paścimēnadvārēṇa through the western gate, niryayau came out

Paulastya (one of the nine mind born sons of Brahma, a scion of sage Paulastya), stupendous hero, a tormentor of Devatas, Indrajith, surrounded by Rakshasas came out through the western gate.
indrajittutatōdṛṣṭavābhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau .

raṇāyābhyudyatauvīraumāyāṅprāduṣkarōttadā ।।6.81.4।।

balēnamahatāvṛtyatasyāvadhamarōcayat ।।6.81.5।।

Indrajith, also through a trick, wanted to make illusory Sita and place her in the chariot surrounded by Rakshasas and thought of killing her.
mōhanārthaṅtusarvēṣāṅbuddhiṅkṛtvāsudurmatiḥ .

hantuṅsītāṅvyavasitōvānarābhimukhōyayau ।।6.81.6।।

Evil minded Indrajith, made up his mind to hoodwink every one who decided to kill Sita and went towards the Vanaras.
tamdṛṣṭavātvabhiniryāntaṅsarvētēkānanaukasaḥ .

utpēturabhisaṅkruddhāśśilāhastāyuyutsavaḥ ।।6.81.7।।


sarvē all, tē of them, kānanaukasaḥ forest animals, abhiniryāntam coming towards, tam him, dṛṣṭavā observing, abhisaṅkruddhāḥ very angry, śilāhastāḥ holding rocks in hand, yuyutsavaḥ enthusiastically, utpētuḥ faced

All the forest animals perceiving Indrajithadvancing became angry and with rocks in hand faced him with enthusiasm.
hanūmān puratastēṣāṅjagāmakapikuñjaraḥ .

pragṛhyasumahacchṛṅgaṅparvatasyadurāsadam ।।6.81.8।।


kapikuñjaraḥ elephant among monkeys, hanūmān Hanuman, parvatasya mountain, sudurāsadam difficult to reach, sumahat huge, śṛṅgam peak, pragṛhya taking hold, tēṣām marched, purataḥforward, jagāma went

Hanuman, the elephant among monkeys, taking hold of a huge mountain peak that was difficult to reach marched forward and went.
sa dadarśahatānandāṅsītāmindrajitōrathē .

ēkavēṇīdharāṅdīnāmupavāsakṛśānanām ।।6.81.9।।

parikliṣṭaikavasanāmamṛjāṅrāghavapriyām .

rajōmalābhyāmāliptaissarvagātrairvarastriyam ।।6.81.10।।


saḥ he, indrajitaḥ Indrajith, rathē chariot, hatānandām cheerless, ēkavēṇīdharām with one braid, dīnām piteous, upavāsakṛśānanām emaciated with fasting, parikliṣṭaikavasanām wearing only one cloth, amṛjām with no desire to live, rajōmalābhyām covered with dust and mud, āliptai: without any anointment, sarvagātraiḥ all over body, varastriyam dear, rāghavapriyām wife of Raghava, sītām Sita, dadarśa saw

Hanuman beheld in the chariot of Indrajith, cheerless Sita with one braid, with no desire to live, emaciated by fasting, wearing a single cloth, body not anointed, covered with dust and dirt all over the body, who was dear to Raghava.
tāṅnirīkṣyamuhūrtaṅtumaithilītyadhyavasyatu .

babhūvāciradṛṣṭāhitēnasājanakātmajā ।।6.81.11।।

abravīttāṅtuśōkārtāṅnirānandāṅtapasvinīm .

dṛṣṭavārathōsthitāṅdṛṣṭvārākṣasēndrasutaśritām ।।6.81.12।।

kaṅsamarthitamasyēticintayansamahākapiḥ .

sahatairvānaraśrēṣṭhairabhyadhāvatarāvaṇim ।।6.81.13।।


saḥmahākapiḥ that great Vanara, śōkārtām miserable, nirānandām joyless, tapasvinīm ascetic woman, rākṣasēndrasutaśritām under the sway of the son of the king of Rakshasas, tām her, dṛṣṭavā gazing, asya her, kim why, samarthitam seated, iti thus, abravīt spoke, cintayan worried, taiḥ with those, vānaraśrēṣṭhaiḥsaha best of Vanaras rāvaṇim son of Ravana, abhyadhāvata rushed

Great Vanara, Hanuman, gazing at miserable, joyless, ascetic woman seated in the chariot, worried, why she is in the chariot. He spoke to the best of Vanara leaders and rushed towards the son of Ravana with them.
tadvānarabalaṅdṛṣṭavārāvaṇiḥkrōdhamūrchitaḥ .

kṛtvāvikōśaṅnistriṅśaṅmūrdhnisītāmakarṣayat ।।6.81.14।।


rāvaṇiḥ Indrajith, tat there, vānarabalam Vanara army, dṛṣṭavā seeing, krōdhamūrchitaḥ deluded with anger, nistriṅśam unsheathed, vikōśam sword, kṛtvā did, sītām Sita, mūrdhni forehead, akarṣayat touched

Indrajith saw the Vanara army coming towards him, deluded with anger, unsheathed the sword and touched Sita's forehead.
tāṅstriyaṅpaśyatāṅtēṣāṅtāḍayāmāsarāvaṇi: .

krōśantīṅrāmarāmētimāyayāyōjitāṅrathē ।।6.81.15।।


rāvaṇi: Indrajith, tēṣām of them, paśyatām as they were looking, māyayā trickishly, rathē on the chariot, yōjitām constructed, rāmarāmētiO Rama Rama, krōśantīm crying, tāṅstriyam stood, tāḍayāmāsahit her

As they were looking at Sita on the chariot trickishly constructed, and she was crying saying, 'O Rama, O Rama', he stood and hit her.
gṛhītamūrdhajāṅdṛṣṭavāhanumān dainyamāgataḥ .

śōkajaṅvārinētrābhyāmutsṛjanmārutātmajaḥ ।।6.81.16।।


mārutātmajaḥ Maruti's son, hanumān Hanuman, gṛhītamūrdhajām holding her head, dṛṣṭavā seeing, dainyam piteously, āgataḥdropped, nētrābhyām from his eyes, śōkajam tears, vāri heroic, utsṛjam tears of sorrow

Seeing Indrajith holding Sita's head, Maruti's son, was immersed in grief, and shed tears of sorrow from his eyes.
tāṅdṛṣṭavācārusarvāṅgīṅrāmasyamahiṣīṅpriyām .

abravītpuruṣaṅvākyaṅkrōdhādrakṣōdhipātmajam ।।6.81.17।।


cārusarvāṅgīm one with lovely limbs, rāmasya Rama's, priyām dear, mahiṣīm wife, tām her, dṛṣṭavā looking, krōdhāt in anger, rakṣōdhipātmajam Rakshasa king's son, paruṣam harsh, vākyam words, abravītrebuked

Looking at Rama's dear wife, of lovely limbs, Hanuman rebuked Indrajith in anger and spoke harsh words.
durātmannātmanāśāyakēśapakṣēparāmṛśaḥ .

brahmarṣīṇāṅkulējātōrākṣasīṅyōnimāśritaḥ ।।6.81.18।।


durātman evil minded, brahmarṣīṇām seers of vedic mantras, kulē clan, jātaḥborn, rākṣasīm Rakshasa woman, yōnim womb, āśritaḥsought, ātmanāśāya for self-destruction, kēśapakṣē hair, parāmṛśaḥseized

"O evil minded Indrajith! You are born as Rakshasa in the clan of seers of vedic mantras and sought the womb of Rakshasa woman. It is for your own self destruction you seized her hair.
dhiktvāṅpāpasamācāraṅyasyatēmatiridṛśī .

nṛśaṅsānārya durvṛtta kṣudra pāpaparākrama ।।6.81.19।।

anāryasyēdṛśaṅkarmaghṛṇātēnāstinirghṛṇa .


nṛśaṅśanārya ignoble, durvṛttacruel, kṣudramean, pāpaparākrama of sinful prowess, nirghṛṇa not merciful, yasya such, tē by you, matiḥ mind, īdṛśīresolve, pāpasamācāramsinful action, tvām your, dik direction, anāryasya not noble, tē to you, karma action, īdṛśam this manner, ghṛṇācompassion, nāsti not there

"You are ignoble, mean, of sinful prowess, not merciful. You have resolved to take such a sinful action which is not worthy of you. You have no compassion to act in this manner."
cyutāgṛhāccarājyāccarāmahastāccamaithilī ।।6.81.20।।

kiṅtavaiṣāparāddhāhiyadēnāṅhantumicchasi .


maithilī Mythili, gṛhācca from home, rājyācca from kingdom, rāmahastācca from Rama's protection, cyutā distanced, nirdaya unkind, ēnām this way, hantum yat hitting, ēṣā like this, tava you, kim what, aparāddhāhiharm has she done

"This Mythili is sent away from home, from the kingdom, and also distanced from Rama's protection. You are unkind and hitting in this way. What harm has she done?"
sītāṅhatvātu na ciraṅjīviṣyasikathañcana ।।6.81.21।।

vadhārhakarmaṇānēnamamahastagatōhyasi .


sītām Sita, hatvā after killing, kathañcana indeed, ciram long time, na jīviṣyasi will not live, vadārhadeserve to be killed, anēna many, karmaṇā actions, mama my, hastagataḥ into my hand s, asihicome

"Indeed, you will not live long after killing Sita. You deserve to be killed for your actions, that is why you have come into my hands."
yēca strīghātināṅlōkālōkavadhyaiṣukusatitāḥ ।।6.81.22।।

ihajīvitamutsṛjyaprētyatānpratipatsyasē .


lōkavadhyēṣu worthy to be killed by the world, iha here, jīvitam life, utsṛjya giving up, prētyaafter death, ēṣu with them, strīghātinām one who kills woman, yē such you, kusatitāḥthrown, lōkāḥ world, tān those, pratipatsyasē descend

"You deserve to be killed by the world here. Giving up your life, you will be thrown out and descend to the world with those who killed women have gone, after your death."
tibruvāṇōhanumān sāyudhairharibhirvṛtaḥ ।।6.81.23।।

abhyadāvat sasuṅkṛddhōrākṣasēndrasutaṅprati .


hanumān Hanuman, iti thus, bruvāṇaḥ speaking, sāyudhaiḥprepared for war, haribhiḥ with monkeys, vṛtaḥsurrounded, sasuṅkṛddhaḥhighly enraged, rākṣasēndrasutaṅprati towards Rakshasa king's son, abhyadhāvat went

Hanuman was highly enraged and speaking like got prepared for war and went surrounded by the monkeys towards Indrajith, the son of Rakshasa king.
patantaṅmahāvīryaṅtadanīkaṅvanaukasām ।।6.81.24।।

rakṣasāṅbhīmakōpānāmanīkaṅtunyavārayat .


āpatantam intercepted, mahāvīryam of mighty prowess, vanaukasām wood dwellers (Vanaras ), tat anīkam that army troops, bhīmakōpānām terribly angry, rakṣasām Rakshasas, anīkam army, nyavārayat advancing

Rakshasa army troops of mighty prowess, terribly angry, were advancing towards wood dwellers (Vanara troops) and were intercepted by the Vanara troops.
saḥtāṅbāṇasahasrēṇavikṣōbhyaharivāhinīm ।।6.81.25।।

hanūmantaṅhariśrēṣṭhamindrajit pratyuvāca ha .


saḥ he, indrajit Indrajith, tāṅharivāhinīm that army of monkeys, bāṇasahasrēṇa with thousand arrows, vikṣōbhya shattered, hariśrēṣṭham foremost of monkey, hanūmantam Hanuman, pratyuvāca ha replied again

Indrajith shattered the army of monkeys with a thousand arrows. Hanuman the foremost Vanara replied to them as follows.
sugrīvastvaṅ ca rāmaścayannimittamihāgatāḥ ।।6.81.26।।

tāṅvadhiṣyāmivaidēhīmadyaivatavapaśyataḥ .


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, tvaṅ ca you also, rāmaśca and Rama, yannimittam for their sake, iha here, āgatāḥ come, tām them, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, tava your, paśyataḥ keep seeing, adyaivatoday, vadhiṣyāmi will kill

"I will kill your Vaidehi today as you keep seeing her for whose sake Sugriva, you and Rama also came here," said Indrajith.
imāṅhatvātatōrāmaṅlakṣmaṇaṅtvāṅ ca vānara ।।6.81.27।।

sugrīvaṅ ca vadhiṣyāmitaṅcānāryaṅvibhīṣaṇam .


vānara Vanara, imām this day, hatvā killing, tataḥ thereafter, rāmam Rama, lakṣmaṇaṅ ca and Lakshmana, tvāṅ ca and you, sugrīvaṅ ca also Sugriva, anāryam ignoble, taṅvibhīṣaṇaṅ ca that Vibheeshana, vadhiṣyāmi will kill

"O Vanara! This day, having killed her, I will kill Rama, Lakshmana, and you, also Sugriva and that ignoble Vibheeshana."
na hantavyāḥstriyaścētiyad bravīṣiplavaṅgama ।।6.81.28।।

pīḍākaramamitrāṇāṅyatsyātkartavyamēvatat .


plavaṅgama monkey, striyaḥ woman, na hantavyāḥiti not to be killed, yat by that, yat who ever, amitrāṇām enemy, pīḍākaram causes trouble, syāt to be done, tat that, kartavyamēva that action alone

"O Hanuman! You said women should not be killed. But whoever causes trouble to the enemy, action should be taken, said Indrajith."
tamēvamuktvārudatīṅsītāṅmayāmayīṅ ca tām ।।6.81.29।।

śitadhārēṇakhaṅgēnanijaghānēndrajitsvayam .


indrajit Indrajith, tam him, ēvam in that way, uktvāspoken, rudatīm crying, māyāmayīm illusory, tāṅsītām Sita, svayam himself, śitadhārēṇa with sharp-edged, khaṅgēna sword, nijaghānakillled

Indrajith having spoken like that killed that crying illusory Sita with a sharp-edged sword.
yajñōpavītamārgēṇabhinnātēnatapasvinī ।।6.81.30।।

sāpṛthivyāṅpṛthuśrōṇīpapātapriyadarśanā .


tēna by that, yajñōpavītamārgēṇa diagonally in the direction of sacred thread worn on chest, bhinnā split, tapasvinī ascetic woman, pṛthuśrōṇī of charming hips, priyadarśanā of pleasing countenance, sā sank pṛthivyām sank into the ground

Split diagonally, the ascetic woman with charming hips and pleasing countenance sank into the ground.
ttāmindrajit striyaṅhatvāhanūmantamuvāca ha ।।6.81.31।।

mayārāmasyapaśyēmāṅkōpēna ca .

ēṣāviśastāvaidēhīniṣphalōvaḥpariśramaḥ ।।6.81.32।।


indrajit Indrajith, tām that, striyam woman, hatvā killing, hanūmantam Hanuamantha, kōpēna ca angry, uvāca ha said, mayā by me, śastraniṣūditām destroyed with sword, imām this, rāmasya Rama's, paśya see, ēṣā that way, ca and, vaidēhī Vaidehi, viśastā cut up, vaḥher, pariśramaḥexertion, niṣphalaḥuseless

Indrajith killed that woman and said to Hanuman" see this Vaidehi, Rama's wife, cut up by my sword. Your exertion is useless now."
tataḥkhaḍagēnamahatāhatvātāmindrajit svayam .

hṛṣṭassarathamāsthāyananāda ca mahāsvanam ।।6.81.33।।


saḥindrajit that Indrajith, mahatā long, khaḍagēna sword, svayam by himself, tām her, hatvā killed, tataḥ then, hṛṣṭaḥjoyful, ratham chariot, āsthāya ascended, mahāsvanam loud tone, nanādaca roared

Indrajith himself with his long sword killed her, then rejoiced, he ascended the chariot and roared in a loud tone.
vānarāśśuśruvuśśabdamadūrēpratyavasthitāḥ .

vyāditāsyasyanadatastaddurgaṅsaṅśritasyatu ।।6.81.34।।


vyāditāsyasya waiting for the war, tat those, durgam difficult, saṅśritasya to access, nadataḥ roaring, śabdam sound, adūrē not far, pratyavasthitāḥ to enter, vānarāḥ Vanaras, śuśruvuḥheard

The sound of his roar was heard by the Vanaras waiting for war standing not far from there, which was difficult for Indrajith to access.
tathātusītāṅvinihatyadurmatiḥprahṛṣṭacētāssababhūvarāvaṇiḥ .

taṅhṛṣṭarūpaṅsamudīkṣyavānarāviṣaṇṇarūpāssahasāpradadudruvuḥ ।।6.81.35।।


durmatiḥ evil minded, saḥrāvaṇiḥ that son of Ravana, sītām at Sita, tathā like that, vinihatya killing, prahṛṣṭacētāḥ happy at heart babhūva was, vānarāḥVanara, hṛṣṭarūpam happy form, tam of him, samudīkṣya witnessing, viṣaṇṇarūpāḥ sorrowful form, sahasā all at once, pradadudruvuḥstarted running

The evil- minded son of Ravana was happy at heart after killing Sita. Witnessing the happy form of Indrajith, the sorrowful Vanaras started running all at once.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkāśītitamassargaḥ ।।
