Sloka & Translation

[Hanuman stops Vanaras running away from the battlefield. Terrific fight takes place between Vanaras and Rakshasas. Hanuman departs to Rama to inform him of Sita's killing by Indrajith. Departure of Indrajith to Nikumbhilam to offer oblations of blood in fire.]

śrutvātubhīmanirhrādaṅśakrāśanisamasvanam .

vīkṣamāṇādiśassarvādudruvurvānararṣabhā: ।।6.82.1।।


śakrāśanisamasvanam whose roar was like thunder, bhīmanirhrādam terrible roar, śrutvā hearing, vānararṣabhā bulls among Vanaras, vīkṣamāṇāḥ looking at, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ directions, bhṛśam at speed, dudruvuḥ fled

The bulls among Vanaras heard the roar which was like thunder and looking at Indrajith fled in all directions.
tānuvācatataḥsarvānhanumān mārutātmajaḥ .

viṣaṇṇavadanāndīnāṅstrastānvidravataḥpṛthak ।।6.82.2।।


tataḥ thereafter, mārutātmajaḥ Maruti's son, hanumān Hanuman, viṣaṇṇavadanān sad face, dīnān piteous, trastān in fear, pṛthak separately, vidravataḥ running away, tān them, sarvān to all, uvāca said

Thereafter, Maruti's son, Hanuman said to all Vanaras who were looking sad, piteous, feeling singly out of fear, and running away.
kasmādviṣaṇṇavadanāvidravadhvaṅplavaṅgamāḥ .

tyaktayuddhasamutsāhāśśūratvaṅkvanuvōgatam ।।6.82.3।।


plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, tyaktayuddhasamutsāhāḥ lost enthusiasm to fight, viṣaṇṇavadanāḥlooking sad, kasmāt why, vidravadhvē running away, vaḥ or, śūratvam valour, kva where, gatam has it gone

"O monkeys! Why have you lost enthusiasm to fight, looking sad and running away? Where has your valour gone?"
pṛṣṭhatō.nuvrajadhvaṅmāmagratōyantamāhavē .

śūrairanijanōpētairayuktaṅhinivartitum ।।6.82.4।।


āhavē return, agrataḥcome in front, yāntam close to, mām me, pṛṣṭhataḥ, anuvrajadhvam who won wars, abhijanōpētaiḥ who were praised, śūraiḥ heroes, nivartitum returning, ayuktaṅhi not proper

"Return and come in front, close to me and follow me. It is not proper for you to win wars and be praised."
ēvamuktāssusaṅkruddhāvāyuputrēṇadhīmatā .

śailaśṛṅgān drumāṅścavajagṛhurhṛṣṭamānasāḥ ।।6.82.5।।


dhīmatā wise, vāyuputrēṇa by Son of windgod, ēvam in that way, uktāḥ having spoken, hṛṣṭamānasāḥ delighted in mind, susaṅkruddhāḥ great fury, śailaśṛṅgān peak of mountain, drumān caiva and also trees, jagṛhuḥ seized

Wise son of wind god having spoken in that way, delighted in mind the Vanaras seized peaks of mountains and also trees in great fury.
abhipētuścagarjantōrākṣasānvānararṣabhāḥ .

parivāryahanūmantamanvayuścamahāhavē ।।6.82.6।।


vānararṣabhāḥ bull among Vanaras, garjantaḥ roaring, rākṣasān Rakshasas, abhipētuḥ surrounding, mahāhavē in great fight, hanūmantam Hanuman, parivārya Vanara leaders, anvayuḥfollowed

Surrounding Hanuman, the Vanara leaders followed him for a great fight.
sa tairvānaramukhyaiścahanumānsarvatōvṛtaḥ .

hutāśanaivārciṣmānadahacchatruvāhinīm ।।6.82.7।।


saḥ he, hanumān Hanuman, taiḥ those, vānaramukhyaiḥ Vanara leaders, sarvataṅvṛtaḥ surrounded all over, arciṣmān, hutāśanaḥiva like flaming fire, śatruvāhinīm enemy troops, adahat consumed

Hanuman went surrounded by Vanara leaders who resembled flaming fire and began to consume the enemy troops like flaming fire.
sa rākṣasānāṅkadanaṅcakārasumahākapiḥ .

vṛtōvānarasainyēnakālāntakayōmōpamaḥ ।।6.82.8।।


vānarasainyēna Vanara army, vṛtaḥ surrounded, saḥmahākapiḥ that great monkey, kālāntakayamōpamaḥ like Yama the spirit of death, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, kadanam havoc, cakrē caused

The Vanara army surrounded that great monkey, Hanuman, who was like Yama, the god of death and caused havoc to Rakshasas.
sa tukōpēnacāviṣṭaḥśōkēna ca mahākapiḥ .

hanūmānrāvaṇirathēmahatīṅpātayacchilām ।।6.82.9।।


mahatā great, śōkēna sorrow, kōpēna ca angry, aviṣṭaḥ overtaken, mahākapiḥ greatVanara, saḥhanumān that Hanuman, rāvaṇirathē on the chariot of the son of Ravana, mahatīm huge, śilām rock, pātayat hurled

Hanuman, overtaken by anger, filled with great sorrow hurled a huge rock at the chariot of Ravana's son.
tāmāpatantīṅdṛṣṭavaivarathassārathinātadā .

vidhēyāśvasamāyuktōvidūramapavāhitaḥ ।।6.82.10।।


tadā then, apatatanīm fallen, tām that, dṛṣṭavaiva seeing, vidhēyāśvasamāyuktaḥ yoked to obedient horses, rathaḥchariot, sārathinā chariot rider, vidūram long distance, apavāhitaḥ drove

Then seeing that rock coming towards the chariot yoked to obedient horses, the chariot rider drove it to a long distance.
tamindrajitamaprāpyarathasthaṅsahasārathim .

vivēśadharaṇīṅbhittvāsāśilāvyarthamudyatā ।।6.82.11।।


vyartham failed, udyata raised up, sāśilā that rock, rathastham to the chariot, sahasārathim along with charioteer, tam him, indrajitam Indrajith, aprāpya having not reached, dharaṇīm on the earth, bhittvā cleaving, vivēśa entered

That rock hurled by Hanuman failed to reach the chariot in which Indrajith was seated and also the charioteer. It cleaved the earth and entered.
patitāyāṅśilāyāṅtuvyathitārakṣasāṅcamūḥ .

nipatantyā ca śilayārākṣasāmathitābhṛśam ।।6.82.12।।


śilāyām rock, patitāyām fell, rakṣasām Rakshasas, camūḥ troops, vyathitaḥ alarmed, nipatantyā on the battlefield, śilayā rock, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, bhṛśam violently, mathitāḥcrushed to death

As the rock fell on the battlefield the Rakshasa troops got alarmed and were violently crushed to death.
tamabhyadhāvan śataśōnadantaḥkānanaukasaḥ .

tēdrumāṅścamahākāyāgiriśṛṅgāṇicōdyatāḥ ।।6.82.13।।


mahākāyāḥ of gigantic body, tēkānanaukasaḥ those forest dwellers, śataśaḥ hundreds, drumāṅśca trees, giriśṛṅgāṇi peaks of mountains ca also, udyatāḥ raised up, nadantaḥ making loud noise, tam them, abhyadhāvan fought

Those gigantic forest dwellers in hundreds seizing trees and rocks lifted and fought making loud noise.
kṣipanīndrajitaṅsaṅkhyēvānarābhīmavikramāḥ .

vṛkṣaśailamahāvarṣaṅvisṛjantaḥplavaṅgamāḥ ।।6.82.14।।

śatrūṇāṅkadanaṅcakrurnēduścavividhaissvanaiḥ .


bhīmavikramāḥ courageous, vānarāḥ Vanaras, saṅkhyē inumerable, indrajitam Indrajith, kṣipanti discharged, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, vṛkṣaśalamahāvarṣam rained trees and rocks, visṛjantaḥ throwing, śatrūṇām enemies, kadanam on the battlefield, cakruḥrolled, vividhaiḥ numerous, svanaiḥtone, nēduśca shouting

Courageous Vanaras, innumerable in number began to rain trees and rocks throwing on the enemies. The Rakshasas number rolled on the battlefield shouting in numerous tones.
vānaraisairmahābhīmairghōrarūpāniśācarāḥ ।।6.82.15।।

vīryādabhihatāvṛkṣairvyacēṣṭantaraṇakṣitau .


ghōrarūpāḥ dreadful appearance, niśācarāḥ night rangers, mahābhīmaiḥ very fierce taiḥvānaraiḥ those Vanaras, vīryāt violently, vṛkṣaiḥ trees, abhihatāḥ beaten up, raṇakṣitau fell on battlefield, vyacēṣṭanta hit one another

Night rangers of dreadful appearance beaten up with trees by most fierce Vanaras, fell on the battlefield and struck one another.
svasainyamabhivīkṣyāthavānarārditamindrajit ।।6.82.16।।

pragṛhītāyudhaḥkruddhaḥparānabhimukhōyayau .


indrajit Indrajith, vānarārditam tormented by Vanaras, svasainyam his own army, abhivīkṣya looking at, atha and then, pragṛhītāyudhaḥ seizing weapons, kruddhaḥangry, parān enemies, abhimukhaḥtowards, yayauwent

Indrajith, looking at his own army tormented by the Vanaras, was enraged, and went towards the enemies' seizing weapons.
saḥśaraughānavasṛjansvasainyēnābhisamvṛtaḥ ।।6.82.17।।

jaghānakapiśārdūlānsubahūndṛṣṭavikramaḥ .


dṛṣṭavikramaḥ unyielding valour, saḥ he, svasainyēna by his own army, abhisamvṛtaḥ combined with, śaraughān arrows, avasṛjan let go, subahūn numerous, kapiśārdūlān tigers among monkeys, jaghāna struck

Indrajith of unyielding valour, combining with his own army let go numerous arrows on the tigers of Vanaras and struck them.
śūlaiḥraśanibhiḥkhaṅgai: paṭṭasai: kūṭamudgaraiḥ ।।6.82.18।।

tēcāpyanucarāstasyavānarānjaghnurāhavē .


āhavē in the battle, tasya his, tē those, anucarāḥ followers api also, śūlaiḥtridents, aśanibhiḥ Asanis, khaṅgai: swords, paṭṭasai:, sharp edged spears, kūṭamudgaraiḥkutamudgaras, vānarān Vanaras, jaghnuḥ struck

In the battle, followers of Indrajith struck the Vanaras with tridents, asanis, swords, sharp edged spears, and kutamudgaras.
skandhaviṭapaiśśālaiśśilābhiścamahābalaḥ ।।6.82.19।।

hanūmānkadanaṅcakrērakṣasāṅbhīmakarmaṇām .


mahābalaḥ endowed with great strength, hanūmān Hanuman, saskandhaviṭapaiḥ trees with huge trunks and branches, śālaiḥrocks, śilābhiśca stones also, bhīmakarmaṇām of terrific task, rakṣasām Rakshasas, kadanam war, cakrē killed

Hanuman, who was endowed with great strength, killed Rakshasas capable of terrific tasks with trees having large trunks and branches and stones also.
sanivāryaparānīkamabravīttānvanaukasaḥ ।।6.82.20।।

hanūmān sannivartadhvaṅ na nassādhyamidaṅbalam .


saḥhanūmān that Hanuman, parānīkam enemy army, nivārya retreat, tānvanaukasaḥhis own army, abravīt spoke, sannivartadhvam no use defeating this army, idam thus, balam army, naḥ not, sādhyam possible, na not

Hanuman made the enemy army retreat, and spoke to his own army," No use of defeating this army for us as our mission is not winning the army."
tyaktvāprāṇānvivēṣṭantōrāmapriyacikīrṣavaḥ ।।6.82.21।।

yannimittaṅhiyudhyāmōhatāsājanakātmajā .


rāmapriyacikīrṣavaḥ What is pleasing to Rama, prāṇān life, tyaktvā giving up, vicēṣṭantaḥmaking it knownyannimittam for that sake, yudhyāmaḥ war, sājanakātmajā that daughter of Janak, hatā has been killed

"To please Rama, we are giving up life. Let us make Rama know that the daughter of Janaka for whose sake we are fighting this war and giving up life has been killed."
imamarthaṅhivijñāpyarāmaṅsugrīvamēva ca ।।6.82.22।।

tauyatpratividhāsyētētatkariṣyāmahēvayam .


imam this, artham fact, rāmam to Rama, sugrīvamēva ca and Sugriva, vijñāpya telling, tau both, yat that which, pratividhāsyētē knowing their reply, tat that, vayam we, kariṣyāmahēwill do

"On telling this fact (that Indrajith has killed Sita) to Rama and Sugriva and knowing their reply we will do what is to be done."
tyuktvāvānaraśrēṣṭhōvārayansarvavānarān ।।6.82.23।।

śanaiśśanairasantrastassabalassanyavartata .


vānaraśrēṣṭhaḥ foremost of Vanaras, sarvavānāran all Vanaras, vārayan keeping back, iti thus, uktvā spoken, asaṅtrastaḥfearless one, sabalaḥ his army, śanaiḥśanaiḥslowly slowly, saṅnyavartata retreated

The foremost of the Vanaras, kept back all the Vanaras after speaking that way to the army and slowly and slowly retreated.
tataḥprēkṣyahanūmantaṅvrajantaṅyatrarāghavaḥ ।।6.82.24।।

sa hōtukāmōduṣṭātmāgataścaityaṅnikumbhilām .


tataḥ thereafter, duṣṭātmā evil- minded, saḥhe, rāghavaḥ Raghava, yatra there, vrajantam sanctuary,, hanūmantaṅ Hanuman, prēkṣya observing, hōtukāmaḥdesiring to, nikumbhilām Nikumbhila, gataḥwent

Thereafter, observing Hanuman going to Raghava, the evil minded Indrajith went to Nikumbhilam desiring to offer oblations at the sanctuary.
nikumbhilāmadhiṣṭhāyapāvakaṅjuhavēndrajit ।।6.82.25।।

yajñabhūmyāṅtatōgatvāpāvakastēnarakṣasā .

hūyamānaḥprajajvālamāṅsaśōṇitabhuktadā ।।6.82.26।।


indrajit Indrajith, nikumbhilām Nikumbhilam, adhiṣṭhāya reaching, pāvakam fire, juhāvapoured, tataḥ there upon, yajñabhūmyām sacrificial ground, gatvā went, tēnarakṣasā by that Rakshasa, hūyamānaḥ offering to Devatas, pāvakaḥ fire, tadā then, māṅsaśōṇitabhuk consuming blood oblations, prajajvāla blazed

Indrajith reaching Nikumbhilam, the sacrificial ground, poured oblation of blood into the sacrificial fire for Devatas and the fire blazed.
sō.rciḥpinaddhōdadṛśēhōmaśōṇitatarpitaḥ .

sandhyāgataivādityaḥsutīvrō.gni: samutthitaḥ ।।6.82.27।।


arciḥ flamepinaddhaḥ wrapped, hōmaśōṇitatarpitaḥ swollen with the offering of blood into the sacrificial fire, samutthitaḥ risen, sutīvraḥ very bright, agni: fire, sandhyāgataḥcovered by flames, ādityaḥiva like sun, dadṛśē resembled

The flame had swollen up with the offering of blood as oblation and risen. It was very bright and wrapped in the flames the fire resembled the sun.
athēndrajidrākṣabhūtayētujuhāvahavyaṅvidhināvidhānavit .

dṛṣṭavāvyatiṣṭhanta ca rākṣasāstēmahāsamūhēṣusamānayajñāḥ ।।6.82.28।।


atha and then, vidhānavat as per tradition, indrajit Indrajith, rākṣasabhūtayē Rakshasas who knew well the tradition, vidhinā as per tradition, havyam offerings to Devatas, juhāva poured, nayānayajñā: in the sacrificial fire, tērākṣasā: that Rakshasa, dṛṣṭavā seeing, mahāsamūhēṣu the great gathering, vyatiṣṭhanta seated

Thereafter, Indrajith, with Rakshasas well versed with traditions, poured offerings into the sacrificial fire, as great Rakshasa gathering seated there were watching.
