[Sri Rama sends Lakshmana to Nikumbha to kill Indrajith. Angada, Hanuman and Jambavan accompany Lakshmana.]

ttasyatadvacanaṅśrutvārāghavaśśōkakarśitaḥ .

nōpadhārayatēvyaktaṅyaduktaṅtēnarakṣasā ।।6.85.1।।


śōkakarśitaḥ immersed in grief, rāghavaḥ Raghava, tasya his, tat those, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, tēna by that rakṣasā Rakshasa, yat which, uktam was, vyaktam spoken, nōpadhārayatē could not know

Immersed in grief, Raghava could not make out the words spoken by Vibheeshana.
tatōdhairyamavaṣṭabhyarāmaḥparapurañjayaḥ .

vibhīṣaṇamupāsīnamuvācakapisannidhau ।।6.85.2।।


tataḥ then, parapurañjayaḥ who can win over enemies, rāmaḥ Rama, dhairyam courage, avaṣṭabhya picked up, upāsīnam seated near, vibhīṣaṇam Vibheeshana, kapisannidhau in front of Vanaras, uvāca said

Then Rama, who can win over enemies, picked up courage, said to Vibheeshana seated near him in front of Vanaras.
nairṛtādhipatēvākyaṅyaduktaṅtēvibhīṣaṇa .

bhūyastacchrōtumicchāmibrūhiyattēvivakṣitam ।।6.85.3।।


nairṛtādhipatē Rakshasa (progeny of Nirriti presiding the south-west), vibhīṣaṇa Vibheeshana, tē you, yat that which, vākyam words, uktam spoken, tat that, bhūyaḥspeak, śrōtum wish to hear, icchāmi wish, tē you, yat that which, ivakṣitam to be conveyed, tat that, bhūyaḥ repeat again, śrōtum wish to hear, icchāmi desire

"O Lord of Rakshasas, Vibheeshana! I wish to hear the words spoken by you. You may repeat that which you wanted to convey. I wish to hear."
rāghavasyavacaḥśrutvāvākyaṅvākyaviśārada. .

yattatpunaridaṅvākyaṅbabhāṣē sa vibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.85.4।।


saḥvibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, vākyam words, udāhṛtam skilled in expression, rāghavasya Raghava's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, punaḥ again, idaṅvākyam these words, yatnāt to him, babhāṣē spoke again

Vibheeshana, who was skilled in expression, spoke again as follows on hearing Raghava's words.
yathājñaptaṅmahābāhōtvayāgulmanivēśanam .

tattathā.nuṣṭhitaṅvīratvadvākyasamanantaram ।।6.85.5।।


mahābāhō mighty -armed, vīra hero, tvayā by you, gulmanivēśanam from their respective places, yathā that which, ājñaptam command, tat then, tvadākyasamanantaram according to your order, tathā like that, anuṣṭhitam has been done

" After your command the army has been divided and placed at respective places as you said."
tānyanīkānisarvāṇivibhagnānisamantataḥ .

vinyastāyūthapāścaivayathānyāyaṅvibhāgaśaḥ ।।6.85.6।।


tāni all of them, anīkāni army forces, sarvāṇi all, samantataḥcollected, vibhaktāni divided, yūthapāścaiva where ever, yathānyāyam in the respective places, vibhāgaśaḥ separately, vinyastāḥ assigned

All the army forces have been collected, divided, and assigned to respective places separately.
bhūyastumamavijñāpyaṅtacchruṇuṣvamahāyaśa: .

tvayyakāraṇasantaptēsantaptahṛdayāvayam ।।6.85.7।।


mahāprabhō O great Lord, bhūyaḥ being, mama me, vijñāpyam which is to be submitted, tat that, śṛṇuṣva hear, tvayi to you, akāraṇasantaptē afflicted without any cause, vayam you, santaptahṛdayāḥ pained at heart

"O great Lord! Hear me, which is yet to be submitted by me to you. You are afflicted without cause and pained at heart."
tyajarājannimaṅśōkaṅmithyāsantāpamāgatam .

tadiyaṅtyajyatāṅcintāśatruharṣavivardhinī ।।6.85.8।।


rājan king, imam this, śōkam agony, mithyā false, āgatam has set in, santāpam worry, tyaja give up, tat then, śatruharṣavivardhinī it enhances the joy of enemy, iyam this, cintā anxiety, tyajyatām giveup

"O king! Give up this false agony which has set in. It enhances the joy of the enemy. Give up this anxiety."
udyamaḥkriyatāṅvīraharṣaḥsamupasēvyatām .

prāptavyāyaditēsītāhantavyāścaniśācarāḥ ।।6.85.9।।


vīra hero, tē to you, sītā Sita, prāptavyā attain, niśācarāḥ Rakshasas, hantavyāśca will be exterminated, udyamaḥ effort, kriyatām resorted, harṣaḥ enthusiasm, samupasēvyatām will recover

"Let efforts be made to recover Sita. Let enthusiasm be restored to recover Sita. Rakshasas will be exterminated."
raghunandanavakṣyāmiśrūyatāṅmēhitaṅvacaḥ .

sādhvayaṅyātusaumitrirbalēnamahatāvṛtaḥ ।।6.85.10।।

nikumbhilāyāṅsamprāpyahantuṅrāvaṇimāhavē .

dhanurmaṇḍalanirmuktairāśīviṣaviṣōpamaiḥ ।।6.85.11।।


raghunandana delight of Raghus, mē my, hitam advice, vacaḥ words, śrūyatām you may listen, ayam this, saumitriḥ Saumithri, mahatā great, balēna army, vṛtaḥ surrounded, nikumbhilāyām Nikumbhilam, samprāptam reach, rāvaṇim Indrajith, āhavē on reaching, dhanurmaṇḍalanirmuktai: discharged from his bow in circular form, āśīviṣaviṣōpamaiḥ like deadly poison of venomous serpents, hantum kill, sādhu excellent, yātu march ahead

"Delight of Raghus! You may listen to my words of advice. Let Saumithri march ahead to Nikumbhilam accompanied by the great army. On reaching, let Lakshmana who is capable of killing Indrajith discharge venomous serpents like deadly poisonous arrows from his bow in circular form and kill Rakshasas."
tēnavīrēṇatapasāvaradānātsvayambhuvaḥ .

astraṅbrahmaśiraḥprāptaṅkāmagāścaturaṅgamāḥ ।।6.85.12।।


vīrēṇa being hero, tēna by him, tapasā by austerity, svayambhuvaḥ creator, varadānāt boon received, brahmaśiraḥ Brahmasira weapon, astram arrow, prāptam attained, kāmagāḥ coursing at his will, turaṅgamāḥ horses

"Lakshmana, being heroic received Brahmasira weapon from the creator by austerity and also horses which can course according to his will."
sa ēṣasahasainyēnaprāptaḥkilanikumbhilām .

yadyutatiṣṭhētkṛtaṅkarmahatānsarvāṅścaviddhinaḥ ।।6.85.13।।


saḥēṣaḥ he in that way, sainyēnasaha accompanied by army, nikumbhilām Nikumbhilam, prāptaḥkila reached, karma act of sacrifice, kṛtam doing, utatiṣṭhēdyadi comes from there, sarvān all, naḥnot, hatān killed, viddhi know

"Indrajith has reached Nikumbhilam accompanied by the army. If he completes the sacrifice and comes from there after completion of the sacrifice, know that we are all killed.
nikumbhilāmasamprāptamahutāgniṅ ca yōripuḥ .

tvāmātāyinaṅhanyādindraśatrōssatēvadhaḥ ।।6.85.14।।

varōdattōmahābāhō sarvalōkēśvarēṇavai .

ityēvaṅvihitōrājanvadhastasyaiṣadhīmataḥ ।।6.85.15।।


mahābāhō mighty-armed, indraśatrō enemy of Indra, yaḥ he who, ripuḥ enemy, nikumbhilām Nikumbhilam, asamprāptam not reached, āhutāgniṅ ca propitiated your fire, ātatāyinam cause of your death, tvām you, hanyāt killed, saḥ he, tē to you, vadhaḥ kill, sarvalōkēśvarēṇa Lord of all worlds, dhīmataḥ wise, tasya his, ityēvam in this way, varaḥ boon, dattaḥgiven, ēṣaḥ that way, vadhaḥ, vihitaḥ ordained

"O mighty armed Rama! that enemy of yours, while you have not reached Nikumbhilam and not propitiated fire sacrifice, can cause your death. Such a boon was granted to him, the enemy of Indra by the Lord of all worlds."
vadhāyēndrajitōrāmasandiśasvamahābala .

hatētasminhataṅviddhirāvaṇaṅsasuhṛjjanam ।।6.85.16।।


mahābala endowed with extraordinary prowess, rāma Rama, indrajitaḥ Indrajith, vadhāya by destruction, sandiśasva order now, tasmin with his, hatē death, sasuhṛjjanam all his kinsfolk, rāvaṇaṅ Ravana, hatam are killed, viddhi you may know

Rama, you are endowed with extraordinary prowess! Order now for the destruction of Indrajith as with his death Ravana and all his kinsfolk are killed, you may know.
vibhīṣaṇavacśrutvārāmōvākyamathābravīt .

jānāmitasyaraudrasyamāyāṅsatyaparākramaḥ ।।6.85.17।।


vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana, śrutvā having heard, rāmaḥ Rama, vākyam words, abravīt spoken, satyaparākrama of truthful valour, raudrasya fierce, tasya his, māyām conjuring skill, jānāmi known to me

Hearing Vibheeshana, Rama said" the conjuring skills of Indrajith of truthful valour is known to me."
sa hibrahmāstravitprājñōmahāmāyōmahābala. .

karōtyasaṅjñān saṅgrāmēdēvānsavaruṇānapi ।।6.85.18।।


brahmāstravit skilled in the use of Brahma's weapon, prājñaḥ wise, mahāmāyaḥ intelligent in conjuring, mahābalaḥendowed with mighty prowess, saḥhe, savaruṇān Varuna and others, dēvānapi Devatas also, saṅgrāmē in war, asaṅjñān unconscious, karōti does

He is skilled in the use of Brahma's weapon, intelligent in conjuring, endowed with mighty prowess, and can make even varuna and Devatas unconscious.
tasyāntarikṣēcarataḥsarathasyamahāyaśaḥ .

na gatirjñāyatēvīrasūryasyēvābhrasamlpavē ।।6.85.19।।


mahāyaśaḥ of great fame, vīra hero, sarathasya with that chariot, antarikṣē sky, carataḥ going, tasya his, gatiḥ movement, abhrasamplavē coursing through clouds, sūryasyēva, like sun na jñāyatē cannot be known

When he moves in his chariot in the sky like the Sun coursing through clouds is difficult to know.
rāghavasturipōrjñātvāmāyāvīryaṅdurātmanaḥ .

lakṣmaṇaṅkīrtisampannamidaṅvacanamabravīt ।।6.85.20।।


rāghavaḥ Raghava, durātmanaḥ wicked- minded, ripōḥ enemy, māyāvīryam conjuring valour, jñātvā knowing, kīrtisampannam richly endowed with fame, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, idaṅvacanam these words, abravīt spoke

Knowing the wicked-minded enemy of conjuring valour, Rama spoke as follows to Lakshmana, richly endowed with fame (of winning wars).
yadvānarēndrasyabalaṅtēnasarvēṇasamvṛtaḥ .

hanūmatpramukhaiścavayūthapaissahalakṣmaṇa ।।6.85.21।।

jāmbavēnārkṣapatināsahasainyēnasamvṛtaḥ .

jahitaṅrākṣasasutaṅmāyābalaviśāradam ।।6.85.22।।


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, vānarēndrasya Vanara king's, yat that which, balam army, tēna by that, sarvēṇa entire, samvṛtaḥ surrounded by, hanūmatpramukhaiḥ Hanuaman as chief, yūthapaiścaivasaha accompanied by commanders of the army, sahasainyēna with army, ṛkṣapatinā Lord of Bears, jāmbavēna with Jambavantha, samvṛtaḥprotected, māyābalaviśāradam well versed in tricks, tam him, rākṣasasutam son of Rakshasa, jahi put an end

"O Lakshmana! Surrounded by the entire army of Vanara king, with Hanuman as commander in chief of the army, protected by Jambavan, king of Bears, put an end to the son of Ravana who is well versed in tricks."
ayaṅtvāṅsacivaiḥsārthaṅmahātmārajanīcaraḥ .

abhijñastasyamāyānāṅpṛṣṭhatō.nugamiṣyati ।।6.85.23।।


tasya his, māyānām by his conjuring, abhijñaḥ knows well, mahātmā great soul, ayaṅrajanīcaraḥ this night ranger, sacivaiḥsārtham with ministers, tvām you, pṛṣṭhataḥ behind, anugamiṣyati will follow

"This great soul, night ranger (Vibheeshana) who knows his conjuring tricks well, will follow behind you with ministers."
rāghavasyavacśrutvālakṣmaṇassavibhīṣaṇaḥ .

jagrāhakārmukaśrēṣṭhamatyadbhutaparākramaḥ ।।6.85.24।।


savibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, atyadbhutaparākramaḥ of wonderful courage, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, rāghavasya Raghava's, vacaḥwords, śrutvā hearing, kārmukaśrēṣṭham best of bow, jagrāha took up

"On hearing Raghava's words, Lakshmana of wonderful courage took up the best of bows accompanied by Vbheeshana."
sannaddhaḥkavacīkhaṅgīsaśarōvāmacāpabhṛt .

rāmapādāvupaspṛśyahṛṣṭaḥsaumitrirabravīt ।।6.85.25।।


sannaddhaḥ fully equipped, kavacī with shield, khaṅgī swords, saśaraḥ shafts, hēmacāpadhṛt golden bow, saumitriḥ Saumithri, hṛṣṭaḥ joyfully, rāmapādau Rama's feet, upaspṛśya touching with reverence, abravīt spoke

Saumithri fully equipped with shields, swords, shafts, and golden bow joyfully, touched Rama's feet with reverence and spoke.
adyamatkārmukōnmuktāśśarānirbhidyarāvaṇim .

laṅkāmabhitiṣyantihaṅsāḥpuṣkariṇīmiva ।।6.85.26।।


adya now, matkārmukōnmuktāḥ released from my bow, śarāḥ arrows, rāvaṇim son of Ravana's, nirbhidya piercing, haṅsāḥ swans, puṣkariṇīmiva descend into lotus pond, laṅkām Lanka, abhipatiṣyanti will drop

Now the arrows released from my bow will drop in Lanka, just as swans descend into lotus pond and pierce into Ravana's son.
adyaivatasyaraudrasyaśarīraṅmāmakāśśarāḥ .

vidhamiṣyantibhittvātaṅmahācāpaguṇacyutāḥ ।।6.85.27।।


adyaiva this day, mahācāpaguṇacyutāḥ loosed from mighty bow, māmakāḥ of mine, śarāḥ arrows, raudrasya fierce, tasya his, śarīram body, bhittvā splitting, tam him, vidhamiṣyanti will kill

"Today loosed from my mighty bow, the arrows will split his fierce body and kill him."
ēvamuktvā sa dyutimān vacanaṅbhrāturagrataḥ .

sa rāvaṇivadhākāṅkṣīlakṣmaṇastvaritōyayau ।।6.85.28।।


dyutimān brilliant, saḥlakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, bhrātuḥ brother, agrataḥin front, ēvam in that way, vacanam words, uktvā spoken, rāvaṇivathākāṅkṣī desirous of killing Ravana's son, tvaritō speedily, yayau went

Brilliant Lakshmana, having spoken that way in front of his brother, went speedily desirous of killing Ravana's son.
sō.bhivādyagurōḥpādaukṛtvācāpipradakṣiṇam .

nikumbhilāmabhiyayaucaityaṅrāvaṇipālitam ।।6.85.29।।


saḥ he, gurōḥ eldest brother, pādau feet, abhivādya saluting, pradakṣiṇaṅ ca going round, kṛtvā done, nikumbilām Nikumbhila, rāvaṇipālitām ruled by Ravana, caityam sanctuary, abhiyayau proceeded

Saluting the feet of the eldest brother and going round him, Laksmana proceeded to Nikumbhila sanctuary ruled by Ravana.
vibhīṣaṇēnasahitōrājaputraḥpratāpavān .

kṛtasvastyayanōbhrātrālakṣmaṇastvaritōyayau ।।6.85.30।।


rājaputraḥ prince, pratāpavān valourous, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, bhrātrā brother, kṛtasvastyayanaḥ receiving blessing, vibhīṣaṇēna by Vibheeshana, sahitaḥaccompanied by, tvaritaḥ quickly, yayau went

Lakshmana, a valourous prince having received blessings from his eldest brother, went quickly accompanied by Vibheeshana.
vānarāṇāṅsahasraistuhanūmān bahubhirvṛtaḥ .

vibhīṣaṇaścasāmātyōtadālakṣmaṇamanvagāt ।।6.85.31।।


tadā then, vānarāṇām Vanaras, bahubhiḥ many, sahasraiḥ thousands, vṛtaḥ surrounded, hanūmān Hanuman, sāmātyaḥ ministers, vibhīṣaṇaśca and Vibheeshana, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, anvagāt followed

Then Hanuman surrounded by many thousands of Vanaras, Vibheeshana and ministers followed Lakshmana.
mahatāharisainyēnasavēgamabhisaṅvṛtaḥ .

ṛkṣarājabalaṅcaivadadarśapathiviṣṭhitam ।।6.85.32।।


mahatā huge, harisainyēna vanara army, savēgam at speed, abhisaṅvṛtaḥ surrounded, pathai on the way, viṣṭhitam standing, ṛkṣarājabalaṅcaiva Jambavan also, dadarśa saw

Lakshmana also saw Jambavan standing on the way, with a huge Vanara army surrounded while going speedily.
sa gatvādūramadhvānaṅsaumitrirmitranandanaḥ .

rākṣasēndrabalaṅdūrādapaśyadvyūhamāśritam ।।6.85.33।।


mitranandanaḥ delight of friends, saḥsaumitriḥ that Saumithri, dūram from distance, adhvānam afar, gatvā gone, dūrāt from distance, vyūham ranged, āśritam battle -array, rākṣasēndrabalam Rakshasa army, apaśyat witnessed

Lakshmana, the delight of friends, witnessed from a distance the Rakshasa army arranged in battle-array.
sa taṅprāpyadhanuṣpāṇirmāyāyōgamarindamaḥ .

tasthaubrahmavidhānēnavijētuṅraghunandanaḥ ।।6.85.34।।


arindamaḥ tamer of enemies, saḥraghunandanaḥ that delight of Raghu race, dhanuṣpāṇiḥ wielding bow, prāpya taking, māyāyōgam conjurer, tam him, brahmavidhānēna by the creator Brahma, vijētum prepared to win, tasthau stood

The tamer of enemies and delight of the Raghu race, Lakshmana stood wielding bow in hand ready to win the conjurer conferred with boon by the creator Brahma.
bhīṣaṇēnasahitōrājaputraḥpratāpavān .

aṅgadēna ca vīrēṇatathānilasutēna ca ।।6.85.35।।


pratāpavān of great valour, rājaputraḥ prince, vibhīṣaṇēna toVibheeshana, vīrēṇa hero, aṅgadēna to Angada, tathā so also, anilasutēna ca son of fire-god, sahitaḥ together

Accompanied by Vibheeshana, and also hero Angada, so also the son of fire god, Hanuman, Lakshmana stood together.
vividhamamalaśastrabhāsvaraṅ ta ddhvajagahanaṅvipulaṅmahārathaiśca .

pratibhayatamamapramēyavēgaṅtimiramivadviṣatāṅbalaṅvivēśa ।।6.85.36।।


vividham several, amalaśastrabhāsvaram resplendent with spotless weapons, dhajagahanam countless posts, mahārathaiśca huge chariots, vipulam vast, pratibhayatamam frightening, apramēyavēgam of immeasurable speed, timiramiva like dark, dviṣatām crowded, balam army, vivēśa entered

Lakshmana entered the crowded army resplendent with spotless weapons, countless posts, huge chariots of frightening speed, as one would enter a veil of darkness.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēadikavyēyuddhakāṇḍēpañcāśītitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the eighty fifth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
