[Vibheeshana tells Lakshmana that Indrajith should be killed before the completion of fire sacrifice started by Indrajith.]

ēvamuktvātusaumitriṅjātaharṣōvibhīṣaṇaḥ .

dhanuṣpāṇiṅnamādāyatvaramāṇōjagāmasaḥ ।।6.87.1।।


saḥ he, vibhīṣaṇaḥVibheeshana, saumitrim Saumithri, ēvam in that manner, uktvā having spoken, jātaharṣaḥ satisfied, dhanuṣpāṇim wielding bow, na him, ādāya taking, tvaramāṇaḥquickly, jagāma went

Vibheeshana, having spoken that way, Saumithri was satisfied. Wielding a bow Saumithri went quickly with Vibheeshana.
avidūraṅtatōgatvāpraviśyatumahadvanam .

darśamāmāsatatkarmalakṣmaṇātavibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.87.2।।


vibhīṣaṇaḥVibheeshana, tataḥ thereafter, avidūram little distance, gatvā went, mahat great, vanam forest, praviśya entered, lakṣmaṇāya with Lakshmana, tat then, karma What to do, darśayāmāsa showed

Thereafter Vibheeshana followed Lakshmana for a small distance to the forest and showed him What to do.
nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśaṅnyagrōdhaṅbhīmadarśanam .

tējasvīrāvaṇabhrātālakṣmaṇāyanyavēdayat ।।6.87.3।।

ihōpahāraṅbhūtānāṅbalavānrāvaṇātmajaḥ .

upahṛtyatataḥpaścātsaṅgrāmamabhivartatē ।।6.87.4।।


balavān mighty, rāvaṇātmajaḥ Ravana's son, iha here, bhūtānām for all beings, upahāram oblations, upahṛtya having offered, paścāt after that, saṅgrāmam to battlefield, abhivartatē comes

"Mighty son of Ravana having offered oblations for all beings he comes to the battlefield. (Said Vibheeshana)"
adṛśṭassarvabhūtānāṅtatōbhavatirākṣasaḥ .

nihantisamarēśatrūn badhnāti ca śarōttamaiḥ ।।6.87.5।।


tataḥ thereafter, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, sarvabhūtānām for all beings, adṛśyaḥinvisible, bhavati becomes, samarē battle, śatrūn enemies, nihanti kills, śarōttamaiḥ best arrows, badhnāti binds

"Thereafter he becomes invisible for all beings and kills his enemies with the best of arrows and binds them."
tamapraviṣṭaṅnyagrōdhaṅbalinaṅrāvaṇātmajam .

vidhvaṅsayaśarairdīpṭai: sarathaṅsāśvasārathim ।।6.87.6।।


nyagrōdham banyan tree, apraviṣṭam entering, balinam mighty, saratham his chariot, sāśvasārathim horses and charioteer, tam them, rāvaṇātmajam Indrajith, dīpṭai: flaming, śaraiḥ arrows, vidhvaṅsaya destroy

"Before he enters the banyan tree, you destroy Indrajith, with his chariot, horses and charioteer by the flaming arrows"
tathētyuktvāmahātējāssaumitrirmitranandanaḥ .

babhūvāvasthitastatracitraṅvisphārayan? dhanuḥ ।।6.87.7।।


mahātējāḥ brilliant, mitranandanaḥ delight of friends, saumitriḥ Saumithri, tathēti like that, uktvā spoken, citram wonderful, dhanuḥ bow, visphārayan twanging, tatra there, avasthitaḥ stood, babhūva remained

Brilliant Saumithri, delighted by his friends, twanging his wonderful bow stood there, after Vibheeshana had spoken to him.
sa rathēnāgnivarṇēnabalavānrāvaṇātmajaḥ .

indrajitkavacīkhaṅgīsadhvajaḥpratyadṛśyata ।।6.87.8।।


balavān endowed with mighty prowess, rāvaṇātmajaḥIndrajith, kavacī shield, khaṅgī sword, sadhvajaḥdecorated with post, saḥindrajit that Indrajith, agnivarṇēna glowing like gold, rathēna in the chariot, pratyadṛśyata appeared

Indrajith, who was endowed with mighty prowess, armed with shield and sword, appeared like glowing gold in the chariot decorated with a post.
tamuvācamahātējāḥpaulastyamaparājitam .

samahvayētvāṅsamarēsamyagyuddhaṅprayacchamē ।।6.87.9।।


mahātējāḥ highly energetic, aparājitam who has never been defeated, tam him, paulastyam of Paulastya clan, uvāca said, tām to him, samarē in battle, samāhvayē challenging you, samyak encounter, mē me, yuddham fight, prayaccha directly

abravītparuṣaṅvākyaṅtatradṛṣṭavāvibhīṣaṇam ।।6.87.10।।

Having spoken that way, highly energetic and strong minded Indrajith seeing Vibheeshana spoke to him harshly as follows.
ihatvaṅjātasamvṛddhaḥsākṣādbhrātāpiturmama .

kathaṅdruhyasiputrasyapitṛvyōmamarākṣasa ।।6.87.11।।


rākṣasa Rakshasa, tvam you, iha here, jātasamvṛddhaḥborn and brought up, mama my, pituḥ father, sākṣāt real, bhrātā brother, mama my, pitṛvyaḥ father too, putrasyakatham with son how, druhyasi hostile

"O Rakshasa! You are born here and brought up by my father. You are my father'sbrother also. How can you be hostile to your son?"
na jñātitvaṅ na sauhārdhaṅ na jātistavadurmatē .

pramāṇaṅ na ca saudaryaṅ na dharmōdharmadūṣaṇa ।।6.87.12।।


durmatē evil minded, dharmadūṣaṇa vitiating righteousness, tava your, jñātitvam race, na pramāṇam not valuing, sauhārdam affection, na not, jātiḥ clan, na not, saudaryam brotherly feeling, na not, dharmaḥ righteousness, na not

"Evil minded Vibheeshana! You are vitiating righteousness, have no value to your race, no affection to your clan, no brotherly feeling and have no righteousness."
śōcyastvamasidurbuddhēnindanīyaścasādhubhiḥ .

yastvaṅsvajanamutsṛjyaparabhṛtyatvamāgataḥ ।।6.87.13।।


durbuddhē evil- minded, tvam you, śōcyaḥ think, sādhubhiḥ pitiable, nindanīyaśca blamed, asi also, yaḥtvam your, svajanam your own people, utsṛjya sought, parabhṛtyatvam enemy's protection, āgataḥ came

"You are evil- minded, think. You are pitiable and to be blamed for you have abandoned your own people and sought the enemy's protection."
naitachacithilayābuddhyātvaṅvēsatimahadantaram .

kva ca svajanasamvāsaḥkva ca nīcaparāśrayaḥ ।।6.87.14।।


svajanasamvāsaḥ living with own people, kva ca is it that, nīcaparāśrayaḥ seeking refuge from strangers, kvaca is it that, ētat this, mahat great, antaram understanding, tvam you, śithilayatā slackened, buddhyā intellect, na vēsati not knowing

"You do not seem to have an understanding of the difference between living with one's own people and seeking refuge from strangers. Your intellect has slackened you are not knowing."
guṇavānvāparajanaḥsvajanōnirguṇō.pivā .

nirguṇaḥsvajanaḥśrēyān yaḥparaḥparaēvasaḥ ।।6.87.15।।


parajanaḥ others, guṇavānvā virtuous, svajanaḥ own people, nirguṇōpivā not virtuous also, nirguṇaḥ not virtuous, svajanaḥ own people, śrēyān welfare, yaḥ that which, paraḥ others, saḥ he, paraēvahi even if he

"Even if others are virtuous and your own people are not virtuous also one should seek the refuge of one's own people. Strangers are always strangers."
yasassvapakṣaṅparityajyaparapakṣaṅniṣēvatē .

sa svapakṣēkṣyaṅprāptēpaścāsttairēvahanyatē ।।6.87.16।।


yaḥ he who, svapakṣam own side, parityajya renouncing, parapakṣam others side, niṣēvatē seeks refuge, saḥhe, svapakṣē own side, kṣyam destruction, prāptē happens, paścāt whose refuge was sought, tairēva by them only, hanyatē destroyed

"He who renounces his own kind and seeks refuge from others, will be destroyed by others whose refuge he sought when his own people are destroyed."
niranukrōśatācēyaṅyādṛśītēniśācara .

svajanēnatvayāśakyaṅpauruṣaṅrāvaṇānuja ।।6.87.17।।


rāvaṇānuja Ravana's brother, niśācara night ranger, tē you, iyam this, yādṛśī way, niranukrōśatā ruthlessness, pauruṣam manliness, svajanēna own people, tvayā by you, śakyam is possible

"O Ravana's brother! You have shown ruthlessness this way. O night ranger! Only you could exhibit this kind of manliness."
ityuktōbhrātṛputrēṇapratyuvācavibhīṣaṇaḥ .

ajānannivamachacīlaṅkiṅrākṣasavikatthasē ।।6.87.18।।


bhrātṛputrēṇa brother's son, iti thus, uktaḥhaving spoken, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, pratyuvāca replied back, rākṣasa Rakshasa, machacīlam my disposition, ajānanniva as though you did not know, kim why, vikatthasē speak like this

Indrajith having spoken like that, Vibheeshana replied," why do you speak like that as though you do not know my disposition?"
rākṣasēndrasutāsādhōpāruṣyaṅtyajagauravāt .

kulēyadyapyahaṅjātōrakṣasāṅkrūrakarmaṇām ।।6.87.19।।

guṇōyaḥprathamōnṛṇaṅtanmēśīlamarākṣasam .


asādhō impious, rākṣasēndrasuta son of Rakshasa king, gauravāt respectfully, pāruṣyam manliness, tyaja renounce, aham I, krūrakarmaṇām cruel deeds, rakṣasām Rakshasas, kulē clan, jātaḥyadyapi though born, nṛṇām king, yaḥ he who, prathamaḥ primary, guṇaḥ quality, tat that, mē I, arākṣasam not Rakshasa like, śīlam nature

"Impious son of Rakshasa king! Though born in the Rakshasa clan I renounced cruel deeds and followed respectfully manliness as my primary quality. My nature is not like that of Rakshasas."
na ramēdāruṇēnāhaṅ na cādharmēṇavairamē ।।6.87.20।।

bhrātrāviṣaśīlō.pikathaṅbhrātānirasyatē .


aham I, dāruṇēna cruel, na ramē not revel, adharmēṇa ca unrighteousness, na ramēvai not follow, viṣamaśīlō.pi of unfavourable disposition, bhrātā a brother, bhrātrā by a brother, katham how nirasyatē expelled

"I do not delight in cruel deeds, nor follow unrighteousness. Or else because of unfavourable disposition how can a brother be expelled by a brother?"
dharmātpracyutaśīlaṅhipuruṣaṅpāpaniścayam ।।6.87.21।।

tyaktvāsukhamavāpnōtihastādāśīviṣaṅyathā .


dharmāt righteous, pracyutaśīlam who has renounced, pāpaniścayam of sinful deeds, puruṣam man, hastāt from hand, āśīviṣaṅyathā venomous serpent, tyaktvā renouncing, sukham happiness, avāpnōti attains

"The association of one who has renounced righteousness and is of sinful deeds is left by a righteous man who undoubtedly attains happiness, is like shaking of a venomous serpent from the hand."
parasvaharaṇēyuktaṅparadārābhimarśakam ।।6.87.22।।

tyājyamāhurdurātmānaṅvēśmaprajvalitaṅyathā .


parasvaharaṇē seizing property of others, yuktam united, paradārābhimarśakam with others wife, durātmānam evil mindedness, prajvalitam burning, vēśmayathā like house, tyājyam getting out, āhuḥit is said

"Seizing the property of others, uniting with others wife, evil mindedness is said to be given up like getting out of a burning house."
parasvānāṅ ca haraṇaṅparadārābhimarśanam ।।6.87.23।।

suhṛdāmatiśaṅkā ca trayōdōṣāḥkṣayāvahāḥ .


parasvānām others wealth, haraṇam stealing, paradārābhimarśanam possessing others wife, suhṛdām friends, atiśaṅkā ca distrusting, trayaḥdōṣāḥ three faults, kṣayāvahāḥ will destroy

"Stealing the wealth of others, possessing others wife, distrusting friends, these three faults will destroy a person."
maharṣīṇāṅvadhōghōrassarvadēvaiścavigrahaḥ ।।6.87.24।।

abhimānaścadōṣaścavairitvaṅpratikūlatā .

ētēdōṣāmamabhrāturjīvitaiśvaryanāśanāḥ ।।6.87.25।।

guṇānpracchādayāmāsuḥparvatānivatōyadāḥ .


maharṣīṇām sages, ghōraḥ dreadful, vadhaḥ killing, sarvadēvaiḥ all deities, vigrahaḥ ca haughtiness, abhimānaśca irascibility, rōṣaḥ ca anger, vairitvaṅ ca animosity, pratikūlatā refractoriness, jīvitaiśvaranāśanāḥ put an end to one's life, ētē all these, dōṣāḥ faults, mama my, bhrātuḥ brother's, guṇān qualities, tōyadāḥ rainy clouds, parvatāniva mountains, pracchādayāmāsuḥ put an end to future

"Dreadful killing of sages, haughtiness towards deities, irascibility, anger, animosity, refractoriness-all these faults will put an end to one's life. These faults have obscured my brother's future just as rainy clouds veil the mountain."
dōṣairētaiḥparityaktōmayābhrātāpitātava ।।6.87.26।।

nēyamastipurīlaṅkā na ca tvaṅ na ca tēpitā .


tava your, pitā father, bhrātā brother, ētaiḥdōṣaiḥ these faults, mayā by me, parityaktaḥaband oned, iyam this, laṅkāpurī Lanka city, na asti not be there, tvam ca you too, na not, tē to you, pitā ca father, na not

"Because of these faults your father and my brother has been abandoned by me from this Lanka. This Lanka will not be there, nor your father and you too."
atimānanī ca bālaścadurvinītaścarākṣasa .

baddhastvaṅkālapāśēnabrūhimāṅyadyadicchasi ।।6.87.27।।


rākṣasa Rakshasa, atimānī ca mean, bālaśca proud of might, durvinītaśca immoral, kālapāśēna by noose of death, baddhaḥ bound, tvam your, mām my, yat yat Whatever, icchasi wish to say, brūhi say

"O Rakshasa! You are mean, proud of might, immoral and bound by the noose of death. Whatever you wish to say you may say."
adyatēvyasanaṅprāptaṅkiṅmāṅtvāmihavakṣyasi .

pravēṣṭuṅ na tvayāśakyaṅnyagrōdhaṅrākṣasādhama ।।6.87.28।।


rākṣasādhama lowly among Rakshasas, kiṅ why, tvam your, vakṣyasi to you, adya today, iha here, vyasanam worry, prāptam? come, tvayā by you, nyagrōdham banyan tree, pravēṣṭum entering, na śakyam not possible

"O Lowly Rakshasa! This worry has come to you today. Entering the banyan tree is not possible for you today."
dharṣayitvā ca kākutsthaṅ na śakyaṅjīvituṅtvayā .

yudhyasvanaradēvēnalakṣmaṇēnaraṇēsaha ।।6.87.29।।

hatastvaṅdēvatākāryaṅkariṣyasiyamakṣayē .


kākutstham Kakuthsa, dharṣayitvā clashing, tvayā by you, jīvitum life, na śakyam not possible, raṇaē in combat, naradēvēna god of retribution, lakṣmaṇēnasahasa with Lakshmana, yudhyasva waging war, tvam you, hataḥ killed, yamakṣayē abode of yama, dēvatākāryam tasks of Devatas, kariṣyasi will be doing

"Clashing with Lakshmana of Kakuthsa clan is not possible for you. By waging war with Lakshmana, you will be killed and reaching the abode of the Lord of death. You will be doing tasks of deities of Devatas."
nidarśayitvātmabalaṅsamudyataṅkuruṣvasarvāyudhasāyakavyayam .

na lakṣmaṇasyaityahibāṇagōcaraṅtvamadyajīvan sabalōgamiṣyasi ।।6.87.30।।


samudyatam exhibiting, ātmabalam your strength, nidarśayitvā proving, sarvāyuthasāyakavyayam using all kinds of weapons, kuruṣva reaching, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, bāṇagōcaram facing the arrows, ētya all of them, sabalaḥyour army, tvam your, jīvan life, na gamiṣyasihi not return

"Exhibiting your strength and proving your might using all kinds of weapons, and facing Lakshmana's arrows, however, you and your army will not return alive."
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēsaptāśītitamassargaḥ ।।
