[Dreadful and tumultuous fight takes place between Lakshmana and Indrajith with an exchange of a volley of arrows.]

tataśśarān dāśarathissandhāyāmitrakarśaṇaḥ .

sasarjarākṣasēndrāyakṛddhassarpaivaśvasan ।।6.89.1।।


tataḥ then, amitrakarśaṇaḥ tamer of enemies, dāśarathiḥ Dasharatha's son, śarān arrows, sandhāya fixing, kruddhaḥ angry, sarpaḥiva like serpent, śvasan sighing, rākṣasēndrāya on Rakshasa king, sasarja discharged

Then Lakshmana, the tamer of enemies, sighs in anger like a serpent, fixing his arrows discharged on Rakshasa king.
tasyajyātalanirghōṣaṅ sa śrutvārākṣasādhipaḥ .

vivarṇavadanōbhūtvālakṣmaṇaṅsamudaikṣata ।।6.89.2।।


saḥ he, rākṣasādhipaḥ Lord of Rakshasas, tasya his, jyātalanirghōṣam the sound of bow string, śrutvā hearing, vivarṇavadanaḥ pale faced, bhūtvā, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, samudaikṣata looked at

On hearing the sound of the bow string of Laksmana the Lord of Rakshasa became pale in face and looked at Lakshmana.
viṣaṇṇavadanaṅdṛṣṭavārākṣasaṅrāvaṇātmajē .

saumitriṅyuddhasaṅyuktaṅpratyuvācavibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.89.3।।


vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, viṣaṇṇavadanam pale -faced, rāvaṇātmajē Ravana's son, rākṣasam Rakshasa, dṛṣṭavā seeing, yuddhasaṅyuktam ready for combat, saumitrim to Saumithri, pratyuvāca replied

Seeing Ravana's son, pale -faced, Vibheeshana replied as follows to Saumithri who was ready for combat.
nimittānyupapaśyāmiyānyasmin rāvaṇātmajē .

tvaratēnamahābāhōbhagnaēṣa na saṅśayaḥ ।।6.89.4।।


mahābāhō broad-shouldered, asmin him, rāvaṇātmanē Ravana's son, yāni on the basis of, nimittāni indications, upapaśyāmi having seen, tēna his, ēṣaḥ in that way, bhagnaḥ broken, saṅśayaḥ no doubt, na not, tvara is clear

"On the basis of the indications of the pale face of Ravana's son, it is clear that he is broken at heart. No doubt about it."
tatassandhāyasaumitriśśarānagniśikhōpamān .

mumōcaniśitāṅstasmin sarpānivamahāviṣān ।।6.89.5।।


tataḥ then, saumitriḥ Saumithri, agniśikhōpamān like tongues of fire, niśitān shining, śarān arrows, sandhāya fitted, mahāviṣān venomous, sarpāniva like snakes, tasmin his, mumōca discharged

Then Saumithri fitted his bow with shining arrows that were like tongues of fire, which resembled venomous serpents and discharged.
śakrāśanisamasparśairlakṣmaṇēnāhataśśaraiḥ .

muhūrtamabhavanmūkṣaḥsarvasaṅkṣubhitēndriyaḥ ।।6.89.6।।


lakṣmaṇēna Lakshmana, śakrāśanisamasparśaiḥ struck by Indra's thunderbolt like, śaraiḥ arrows, āhataḥ attacked, sarvasaṅkṣubhitēndriyaḥ all sense organs, muhūrtam for a short while, mūḍhaḥ excited, abhavat remained

Struck by Indra's thunderbolt like arrows of Lakshmana, all sense organs of Indrajith remained excited for a short while.
upalabhyamuhūrtēnasaṅjñāṅpratyāgatēndriyaḥ .

dadarśāvasthitaṅvīraṅvīrōdaśarathātmajam ।।6.89.7।।


muhūrtēna in a short while, saṅjñām gaining consciousness, upalabhya getting up, pratyāgatēndriyaḥ returned to normalcy, vīrō heroic, avasthitam stood, vīram heroic, daśarathātmajam Dasharatha's son, dadarśa saw

Heroic son of Ravana gained consciousness in a short while and returning to normalcy saw the heroic son of Dasharatha.
sō.bhicakrāmasaumitriṅrōṣātsaṅraktalōcanaḥ .

abravīccainamāsādyapunassaparuṣaṅvacaḥ ।।6.89.8।।


saḥ he, rōṣāt enraged, saṅraktalōcanaḥ eyes turned red, saumitrim at Saumithri, abhicakrāma advanced towards, saḥ he, ēnam in this way, āsādya approaching, paruṣam harsh, vacaḥwords, punaḥagain, abravīt ca spoke

He (Indrajith), enraged and eyes turned red, advancing towards Lakshmana, and approaching him again spoke in this way harshly.
kiṅ na smarasitadyuddhēprathamēmatparākramam .

nibaddhastvaṅsahabhrātrāyadābhuvivicēṣṭasē ।।6.89.9।।


tvam your, bhrātrāsa brother, nibaddhaḥ bound, yadā that time, bhuvi ground, vicēṣṭasē fallen, prathamē first, yuddhē combat, tat that, matparākramam my valour, na smarasi not rememberkim why

"Do you not remember that in the first combat your brother bound by me had fallen on the ground. Why do you not remember my valour?"
yuvāṅkhalumahāyuddhēśakrānisamaiśśaraiḥ .

śāyitauprathamaṅbhūmauvisaṅjñausapurassarau ।।6.89.10।।


sapuraḥsarau formerly in the course of battle, yuvām you two, prathamam first, mahāyuddhē great combat, śakrāśanisamaiḥ like Indra's thunderbolt and Asani, śaraiḥ arrows, visaṅjñau lost senses, bhūmau, ground śāyitau lay down

"Formerly in the course of the first battle, the great combat, you two were laid down on ground having lost senses struck by my thunderbolt like arrows and Asani of Indra."
smṛtirvānāstitēmanyēvyaktaṅvāyamasādanam .

gantumicchasiyasmāttvamaṅdharṣayitumicchasi ।।6.89.11।।


ttvamaṅ you both, mām my, adharṣayitum knowing my valour, yasmāt this way, icchasi desire, tē you, smṛtiḥ memory, nāstivā has lost is it, vyaktam tell me, yamasādanam Yama's abode, gantum will send, icchasivā you like to go, manyē think

"Knowing my valour, you have come. Have you lost memory or do you desire to go to Yama's abode? Tell me."
yaditēprathamēyuddhē na dṛṣṭōmatparākramaḥ .

adyatēdarśayiṣyāmitiṣṭhēdānīṅvyavasthitaḥ ।।6.89.12।।


prathamē first, yuddhē combat, tē to you, matparākramaḥ my courage, na dṛṣṭaḥyadi if not seen, adya now, tē to you, darśayiṣyāmi will exhibit, idānīm this time, vyavasthitaḥ stand, tiṣṭha fight

"If you have not seen my courage in the first combat, now I will exhibit. Stand and fight now."
ityuktvāsaptabhirbhāṇairabhivivyāthalakṣmaṇam .

daśabhistuhanūmantaṅtīkṣṇadhāśśarōttamaiḥ ।।6.89.13।।


iti thus, uktvā spoken, saptabhiḥseven, bāṇaiḥshafts, lakṣmaṇam at Lakshmana, vivyātha pierced, tīkṣṇadhāraiḥ pointed shafts, daśabhiḥ ten, śarōttamaiḥ best of shafts, hanūmantam at Hanuman

Having spoken that way, Indrajith pierced Lakshmana with seven pointed shafts and Hanuman with ten best of shafts.
tataḥśaraśatēnaivasuprayuktēnavīryavān .

krōthāvdiguṇasamrabdhōnirbibhēdavibhīṣaṇam ।।6.89.14।।


tataḥ then, vīryavān valiant, krōdhāt in anger, dviguṇasamrabdhaḥdoubly angry, suprayuktēna well targeted, śaraśatēnaiva a hundred arrows, vibhīṣaṇam Vibheeshana, nirbhibhēda pierced

Then valiant Rakshasa, doubly angry pierced well targeted hundred arrows at Vibheeshana.
taddaṣṭavēndrajitākarmakṛtaṅrāmānujastadā .

acintayitvāprahasannaitatkiñciditibruvan ।।6.89.15।।

mumōca ca śarān ghōrān samgṛhyanarapuṅgavaḥ .

abhītavadanaḥkruddhōrāvaṇiṅlakṣmaṇōyudhi ।।6.89.16।।


tadā then, rāmānujaḥ Rama's brother, narapuṅgavaḥ best of men, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, yudhi in war, indrajitā Indrajith, kṛtam sake, tat that, karma action, dṛṣṭavā seeing, acintayitvā not minding, prahasan laughing, kiñcit a little, na not, iti this, bruvan said, abhītavadanaḥ fearless face, kruddhaḥ angry, rāvaṇim Indrajith, ghōrān dreadful, śarān arrow, samgṛhya taking, mumōca discharged

Then Lakshmana, the foremost among men, seeing Indrajith not minding his action even a little, laughing said," these arrows are not causing even a little pain." Then fearless Lakshmana discharged a dreadful arrow at Indrajith.
naivaṅraṇagatāḥśūrāḥpraharantiniśācara .

laghavaścālpavīryāścaśarāsukhāstavahīmē ।।6.89.17।।


niśācara night ranger, raṇagatāḥ coming for war, śūrāḥ heroes, ēvam this way, praharanti strike, tava your, imēśarāḥ these arrows, laghavaśca weak, alpavīryāśca less painful, sukhāḥhi conducive

"O Night ranger! Heroes coming for war do not strike this way. These arrows are weak, so not painful but conducive."
naivaṅśūrāstuyudhyantēsamarējayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ .

ityēvaṅtaṅbruvāṇastudhanvīśarairabhivavarṣa ha ।।6.89.18।।


samarē in war, jayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ seeking victory, śūrāḥ heroes, ēvam in that way, na yudhyantē not fight, ityēvam this way, bruvāṇastu speaking, dhanvī bow, śaraiḥ arrows, abhivavarṣa ha rained arrows

"Heroes seeking victory in that way do not fight". Thus speaking, Lakshmana rained arrows.
syabāṇaissuvidhvastaṅkavacaṅkāñcanaṅmahat .

vyaśīryatarathōpasthētārājālamivbārāt ।।6.89.19।।


tasya his, bāṇaiḥ arrows, suvidhastam shattered by, kāñcanam with gold, mahat, kavacam shield, ambarāt from the sky, tārājālamiva like a cluster of stars, rathōpasthē on the chariot, vyaśīryata dropped

Shattered by the arrows, the shield of Indrajith covered with gold dropped in the chariot like a mass of stars from the sky.
vidhūtavarmānārācairbhabhūva sa kṛtavraṇaḥ .

indrajitsamarēvīraḥpratyūṣēbhānumāniva ।।6.89.20।।


nārācaiḥ iron arrows, vidhūtavarmā shattered shield, kṛtavraṇaḥ injured, vīraḥ hero, indrajit Indrajith, samarē in combat, pratyūṣē, bhānumāniva like the morning sun, babhūva appeared

Indrajith's shield shattered by the iron arrows, (of Lakshmana) in the combat, he seemed (bathed in blood) like the morning Sun.
tataḥśarasahasrēṇasaṅkruddhōrāvaṇātmajaḥ .

bibhēdasamarēvīrōlakṣmaṇaṅbhīmavikramaḥ ।।6.89.21।।


tataḥ then, vīraḥ hero, bhīmavikramaḥ of terrific valour, rāvaṇātmajaḥ Ravana's son, saṅkruddhaḥ enraged, samarē in war, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, śarasahasrēṇa with thousand arrows, bibhē pierced

Then enraged Ravana's son endowed with terrific valour pierced Lakshmana with a thousand arrows.
vyaśīryatamahaddhivyaṅkavacaṅlakṣmaṇasya ca .

kṛtapratikṛtānyōnyaṅbabhūvaturabhidrutau ।।6.89.22।।


lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, mahat mighty, divyam wonderful, ca kavacam that shield, vyaśīryata shattered, kṛtapratikṛtānyōnyam took offensive as well as retaliated each other, abhidrutau swiftly, babhūvatuḥ moving

Lakshmana's mighty and wonderful shield also got shattered. Both took offense as well as retaliated each other moving swiftly.
abhīkṣṇaṅniśśvasantautauyudhyētāṅtumulaṅyudhi .

śarasaṅkṛttasarvāṅgausarvatōrudhirōkṣitau ।।6.89.23।।


yudhi in war, śarasaṅkṛttasarvāṅgau limbs wounded by arrows, sarvataḥ allover, rudhirōkṣitau bathed in blood, tau both, abhīkṣṇam again and again, niśśvasantau breathing heavily, tumulam vehemently, yudhyētām fought

Wounded all over the body in war and bathed in blood, breathing heavily again and again both of them fought vehemently.
sudīrghakālaṅtauvīrāvanyōnyaniśitaiḥśaraiḥ .

tatakṣaturmahātmānauraṇakarmavihāradau ।।6.89.24।।


mahātmānau great souls, raṇakarmaviśāradau experts in fighting, tau both, vīrau heroes, sudīrghakālam for long, anyōnyam one another, niśitaiḥ sharp, śaraiḥ arrows, tatakṣatuḥtore

Both heroes, being experts in fighting, tore each other with sharp arrows for long.
babhūvatuścātmajayēyattaubhīmaparākramau .

tauśaraughaistadākīrṇaunikṛttakavacadhvajau ।।6.89.25।।

sṛjantaurudhiraṅcōṣṇaṅjalaṅprasravaṇāviva .


bhīmaparākramau of terrible valour, ātmajayē each of them to win, yattau they both, babhūvatuḥ moving, śaraughaiḥ arrows of both, tadā then, saṅkīrṇau mixed together, nikṛttakavacadhvajau armour and standards torn, tau both, uṣṇam hot, rudhiram blood, sṛjantau waterfalls, jalam water, prasravaṇāviva gushing

Both of them of terrible valour, each of them wanting to win, moving together their armour and standards torn, started emitting hot blood from their body like waterfalls gushing out.
śaravarṣaṅtatōghōraṅmuñcatōrbhīmaniḥsvanam ।।6.89.26।।

sāsārayōrivākāśēnīlayōḥkālamēghayōḥ .

tayōrathamahānkālōvyatyayādyudhyamānayōḥ ।।6.89.27।।

na ca tauyuddhavaimukhyaṅśramaṅvāpyupajagmatuḥ .


tataḥ then, bhīmaniḥsvanam terrific sound, ghōram dreadful, śaravarṣam rain of arrows, muñcatōḥ set free, ākāśē from the sky, sāsārayōḥ having bow, nīlayōḥ dark, kālamēghayōriva clouds like at the time dissolution, yudhyamānayōḥ started fighting, tayōḥ both of them, atha now, mahān great, kālaḥlong, vyatyayāt from battlefield, tau both, yuddhavaimukhyam not turned back, śramaṅvāpi no fatigue, na upajagmutuḥ not experienced

Just as dark clouds rain from the sky at the time of dissolution, the dreadful rain of arrows set free from the bows of both Lakshmana and Indrajith caused terrific sound. Both of them fought for long and did not turn back from the battlefield or experienced any fatigue
astrāṇyastravidāṅśrēṣṭhaudarśayantaupunaḥpunaḥ ।।6.89.28।।

śarānucchāvacākārānantarikṣēbabandhatuḥ .


astravidām displaying their weapons, śrēṣṭhau best warriors, punaḥpunaḥ again and again, astrāṇi weapons, darśayantau looking at, antarikṣau in to the sky, ucchāvacān covering, śarān arrows, babandhatuḥ network of arrows

Both of them, the best warriors, displaying their weapons again and again looking at the sky covered it with a network of arrows.
nyapētadōṣamasyantaulaghucitraṅ ca suṣṭhu ca ।।6.89.29।।

ubhaututumulaṅghōraṅcakraturnararākṣasau .


nararākṣasau human and Rakshasa, ubhau both, nyapētadōṣam without wasting single arrow, laghu with agility, citraṅ ca wonderful, suṣṭhu ca exceedingly, asyantau one over the other, tamulam frightening, ghōram dreadful, cakratuḥ

Both human and Rakshasa warriors fought an exceedingly frightening and dreadful fight over one another with agility without wasting a single arrow.
tayōḥpṛthak pṛthabhagīmaśśuśruvētalanissvanaḥ ।।6.89.30।।

prakampayanjanaṅghōrōnirghātaivadāruṇaḥ .


tayōḥ those two, bhīmaḥ fierce, tumulaḥ tumultuous, talanissvanaḥ sound of palms clapping, pṛthak pṛthakseparately, separately, śśuśruvē impact, dāruṇaḥ threatening, nirghātaḥiva like violent wind, janam risen, prakampayan shaken

The fierce and tumultuous impact of the sound produced by their palms (clappings) could be heard separately. It was like a violent wind that had shaken.
satayōḥbhrājatēśabdastadāsamarayattayōḥ ।।6.89.31।।

sughōrayōrniṣṭanatōrgaganēmēghayōriva .


tathā that way, samarayattayōḥ both of them fighting, tayōḥ both, saḥśabdaḥ that sound, sagaganē sky, niṣṭanatōḥ murmur, sughōrayōḥ exceedingly frightening, mēghayōriva like the clouds, bhrājatē was heard

When both of them were thus fighting, the exceedingly frightening sound that was heard was like the murmur of clouds.
suvarṇapuṅkhairnārācairbalavantaukṛtavraṇau ।।6.89.32।।

prasusruvātērudhiraṅkīrtimantaujayēdhṛtau .


jayē to win, dhṛtau determined, kīrtimantau glorious heroes, suvarṇapuṅkhaiḥ gold covered, nārācaiḥ iron arrows, kṛtavraṇau by the wounds, balavantau powerful, rudhiram blood, prasusruvātē profusely bleeding

Glorious and powerful heroes, determined to win over each other, wounded by the gold covered iron arrows were bleeding profusely.
tēgātrayōrnipatitārukmapuṅkhāḥśarāyudhi ।।6.89.33।।

asṛdagigdhāviniṣpēturviviśurdharaṇītalam .


yudhi in battle, gātrayōḥ limbs, patitāḥ fallen, rukmapuṅkhāḥ gold covered arrows, tēśarāḥ those arrows, asnidagigdhāḥ fallen on their body, viniṣpētuḥ dropped out, dharaṇītalam into the ground, viviśuḥ penetrated

In the battle the gold covered arrows fell on their body, dropped out and penetrated into the earth.
anyēsuniśitaiśśastrairākāśēsañjaghaṭṭirē ।।6.89.34।।

babhañjuścicchiduścaivatayōrbāṇāḥsahasraśaḥ .


tayōḥ both, anyēbāṇāḥ other arrows, suniśitaiḥ pointed, śastrai: weapons, ākāśē sky, sañjaghaṭṭirē clashed, sahasraśaḥ thousands, babhañjuḥ shattered, cicchiduśca tore

The other pointed arrows of both clashed with weapons in the sky in thousands, shattered and tore them.
sababhūvaraṇēghōrastayōrbāṇamayaścayaḥ ।।6.89.35।।

agnibhyāmivadīptābhyāṅsatrēkuśamayaścayaḥ .


raṇē in battle, tayōḥ both, ghōraḥ terrific, bāṇamayaḥ with arrows, yaḥ they satrē eyes, dīptābhyām glowing, agnibhyām like fire, kuśamayaḥ kusa grass, yaḥ those, babhūva appeared

In the battle the terrific arrows appeared to the eyes like kusa grass spread by the sacred fire.
tayōḥkṛtavraṇaudēhauśuśubhātēmahātmanōḥ ।।6.89.36।।

supuṣpāvivaniṣpatrauvanēśālmalikiṅśukau .


tayōḥ those mahātmanōḥ great heroes, kṛtavraṇau wounded, dēhau bodies, vanē forest, supuṣpā blossoms, niṣpatrau sworn off their leaves, śālmalikiṅśukauiva like Kimsuka and cotton, śuśubhātē shone

The wounded bodies of the great heroes, shone like the Kimsuka and Cotton blossoms in the forest, swore off their leaves.
cakratustumulaṅghōraṅsannipātaṅmuhurmuhuḥ ।।6.89.37।।

indrajillakṣmaṇaścaivaparasparavadhaiṣiṇau .


indrajit Indrajith, lakṣmaṇaścaiva and also Lakshmana, parasparavadhaiṣiṇau, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, tumulam tumultous, ghōram dreadful, sannipātam struggle, cakratuḥ carried out

Indrajith and Lakshmana again and again carried out tumultuous and dreadful struggle.
lakṣmaṇōrāvaṇiṅyuddhērāvaṇiścāpilakṣmaṇam ।।6.89.38।।

anyōnyaṅtāvabhighnantau na śramaṅpratipadyatām .


yuddhē in the battle, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, rāvaṇim Indrajith, rāvaṇiścāpi Indrajith, lakṣmaṇaṅcāpi Lakshmana also, tau both, anyōnyam one another, abhighnantau striking, śramam fatigue, na pratipadyatām not experienced

In the battle Lakshmana and Indrajith striking each other had not experienced fatigue.
bāṇajālaiśśarīrasthairavagāḍhaistarasvinau ।।6.89.39।।

śuśubhātēmahāvīryauprarūḍhāvivaparvatau .


mahāvīryau great heroes, tarasvinau endowed with great speed, avagāḍhaiḥ pierced, śarīrasthaiḥ in the body, bāṇajālaiḥ network of arrows, prarūḍhau overgrown with trees, parvatauiva like mountains, śuśubhātē shone

Great heroes, endowed with speed with a network of arrows pierced on the bodies shone like mountains overgrown with trees.
tayōrudhirasiktānisamvṛtāntiśarairbhṛśam ।।6.89.40।।

babhrājuḥsarvagātrāṇijvalantaivapāvakāḥ .


tayō Both, rudharisiktāni wetted with blood, śaraiḥ arrows, samvṛtāni covered, sarvagātrāṇi all over the body, jvalantaḥ glowing, pāvakāḥiva fire like, bhṛśam exceedingly, babhrājuḥ appeared bright

Both of them, bodies wet with blood and covered with arrows were glowing like fire and appeared bright.
tayōrathamahān kālōvyatīyādyudhyamānayōḥ ।।6.89.41।।

na ca tauyuddhavaimukhyaṅśramaṅvāpyupajagmatuḥ .


tayō both, ratha Ravana's son and Lakshmana, mahān long, kālō time, vyatīyādyudhya fighting, anyōḥ for them, tau both, yuddhavaimukhyaṅ neither turned away from battle, śramaṅ fatigue, vāpyupajagmatuḥ experienced

Even though both, Ravana's son, and Lakshmana, fought for a long time they neither turned away from battle or experienced fatigue.
athasamarapariśramaṅnihantuṅsamaramukhēṣvajitasyalakṣmaṇasya .

priyahitamupapādayanmahautmāssamaramupētyavibhīṣaṇō.vatasthē ।।6.89.42।।


atha and then, mahātmā great self, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, samaramukhēṣu army chief, ajitasya, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, samarapariśramam fatigue of battle, nihantum one who is invincible in battle, priyahitam wishing welfare, upapādayan to relieve, samaram battle, upētya intending, avatasthē stood

Thereafter, Vibheeshana the great self and army chief, intending welfare of Lakshmana who was invincible in battle reached there to relieve him of his fatigue and stood.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkōnanavatitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the eighty ninth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
