[Rakshasa women lament over the death of Rakshasas in war.]

tānitānisahasarāṇisārōhāṇāṅ ca vājināma .

rathānāṅtavaganivaraṇānāṅsadhavajānāṅsahasaraśaḥ ।।6.95.1।।

rākaṣasānāṅsahasarāṇigadāparighayōdhināma .

kāñacanadhavajacitarāṇāṅśūrāṇāṅkāmarūpiṇāma ।।6.95.2।।

nihatāniśarairadīsatīkaṣaṇaisatapatakāñacanabhūṣaṇaiḥ .

rāvaṇēnaparayukatānirāmēṇākaliṣaṭakaramaṇā ।।6.95.3।।

"Rama who can work without getting tired put an end to thousands of Rakshasa warriors with his sharp glowing arrows decked with gold. Thousands of warriors sent by king Ravana, mounted on chariots, yoked to horses, of the colour of fire, thousands of warriors who could wage with iron bars, decked in gold, mounted on colourful chariots of golden colour pictures and Rakshasas who can change their form at will, were destroyed by Sri Rama."
dṛṣaṭavāśarutavā ca samabharānatāhataśēṣāniśācarāḥ .

rākaṣasīśacasamāgamayadīnāśacinatāparipalutāḥ ।।6.95.4।।

vidhavāhataputarāśacakarōśanatayōhatabānadavāḥ .

rākaṣasayaḥsahasaṅagamayaduḥkhāratāḥparayadēvayana ।।6.95.5।।


hataśēṣāḥ left over, niśācarāḥ night rangers, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, śarutavā hearing, samabharānātaḥ bewildered, dīnāḥ piteous, cinatāparipalutāḥ filled with agony, rākaṣasīḥ Rakshasas, samāgamaya coming together, parayadēvayana moving in groups, vidhavāḥ widowed, hataputarāśaca son killed, hatabānadhavāḥ ca kin killed, rākaṣasayaḥ protectors, sahasaṅagamaya all associates, duḥkhāratāḥ stricken in grief

"On seeing and hearing of the others left over, the night rangers felt bewildered and piteous with agony coming together, moving in groups, those who lost husband, son, kin and protectors along with associates crying, stricken with grief."

āsasādavanērāmaṅkanadarapamivarūpiṇama ।।6.95.6।।


vṛdadhā aged, karālā dreadful, niraṇatōdarī hideous, śūrapaṇakhā Surpanakha, kanadarapamivarūpiṇama of like god of love, rāmama Rama, vanē in the forest, kathama how, āsasāda approach

"How did that old, dreadful and hideous Surpanakha approach Rama, whose form is charming like the god of love, in the forest?"
sukumāraṅmahāsatatavaṅsaravabhūtahitēratama .

taṅdṛṣaṭavālōkaninadayāsāhīnarūpāparakāmitā ।।6.95.7।।


lōkaninadayā deserves to be killed, hīnarūpā of ugly appearance, sā she, sukumārama delicate, mahāsatatavama extraordinary goodness, saravabhūtahitē well-wisher of all beings, ratama always, tama him, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, parakāmitā stung with love

"That woman of ugly appearance deserves to be killed. How is it that she was stung with love with that delicate Rama, a well wisher of all beings?"
kathaṅsaravaguṇairahīnāguṇavanataṅmahaujasama .

sumukhaṅduramukhīrāmaṅkāmayāmāsarākaṣasī ।।6.95.8।।


saravaguṇaiḥ virtuous, hīnā ugly, duramukhī terrific appearance, rākaṣasī rakshasi, guṇavanatama virtuous, sumukhama in favour, rāmama Rama, kathama how, kāmayāmāsa dare to love

"How did that rakshasi of terrible appearance dare to love that virtuous Rama?"
janasayāsayālapabhāgayatavādavalinīśavētamūradhajā .

akārayamapahāsayaṅ ca saravalōkavigarahitama ।।6.95.9।।

rākaṣasānāṅvināśāyadūṣaṇasayakharasaya ca .

cakārāparatirūpāsārāghavasayaparadharaṣaṇama ।।6.95.10।।


valinī old and wrinkled, śavētamūradhajā grey haired, aparatirūpā uncouth appearance, asayajanasaya her own people, alapabhāgayatavāta because of bad luck, rākaṣasānāma Rakshasas, dūṣaṇasaya Dooshana's, kharasaya ca Khara's, vināśāya destruction, akārayama misdeed, apahāsayama ridiculing, saravalōkavigarahitama condemned by the whole world, rāghavasaya Raghava's, paradharaṣaṇama attacking, cakāra tried

"Because of our bad luck and to the destruction of her own people, Khara and Dooshana, that old lady, with wrinkled face, grey haired (Surpanakha) Rakshasa woman tried to go and attack Raghava, a misdeed which was ridiculed and condemned by the whole world?"
tananimitatamidaṅvairaṅrāvaṇēnakṛtaṅmahata .

vadhāyasītāsāsītādaśagarīvēṇarakaṣasā ।।6.95.11।।


tananimitatama for that reason, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, mahata great, idaṅvairama this enmity, kṛtama conceived, rakaṣasā Rakshasa, daśagarīvē ten headed, sāsītā that Sita, vadhāya borne away

"For that reason of Surpanakha, this enmity has been conceived by Ravana and Sita was borne away by the ten headed Rakshasa."
na ca sītāṅdaśagarīvaḥparāpanōtijanakātamajāma .

badadhaṅbalavatāvairamakaṣayaṅrāghavēṇa ca ।।6.95.12।।


daśagarīvaḥ tenheaded, janakātamajāma janaka'sdaughter, sītāma Sita, na ca parāpanōti leading to, balavatā forcibly, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, akaṣayama undying, vairama enmity, badadhama contracted

"Hope the ten headed Ravana will not touch Sita forcibly, by which undying enmity has been contracted already."
vaidēhīṅparārathayānaṅtaṅvirādhaṅparēkaṣayarākaṣasama .

hatamēkēnarāmēṇaparayāpataṅtananidaraśanama ।।6.95.13।।


vaidēhīma Vaidehi, parāradhayānama solicitous, ēkēna one, rāmēṇa by Rama, hatama killed, rākaṣasama Rakshasa, virādhama Viradha, parēkaṣaya perceiving, tata that, nidaraśanama proof, parayāpatama sufficient

"On perceiving that Viradha solicitous of Vaidehi, the Rakshasa was killed by Rama with one arrow. That is sufficient proof (of Rama's valour)."
caturadhaśasahasarāṇirakaṣasāṅbhīmakaramaṇāma .

nihatānijanasathānēśarairaganiśikhōpamaiḥ ।।6.95.14।।


janasathānē at Janasthana, bhīmakaramaṇāma of dreadful deeds, rakaṣasāma Rakshasas, caturadaśa fourteen, sahasarāṇi thousand, aganiśikhōpamaiḥ like peaks of fire, śaraiḥ arrow, nihatāni destroyed

" At Janasthana fourteen thousand Rakshasas have been destroyed with his arrows like peaks of fire."
kharaśacanihataḥsaṅakhayēdūṣaṇasatariśirāsatathā .

śarairāditasaṅakāśaiḥparayāpataṅtananidaraśanama ।।6.95.15।।


saṅakhayē in combat, āditayasaṅakāśaiḥsun like, śaraiḥ arrows, kharaśaca Khara, nihataḥ killed, dūṣaṇaḥ Dooshana, tathā so also, tariśirāḥ Trisira, tata that, parayāpatama example, nidaraśanama sufficient proof

"Khara was killed in that combat with sun-like arrows, so also Dooshana and Trisira. That example is sufficient proof."
hatōyōjanabāhuśacakabanadōrudirāśanaḥ .

karōdhānanādaṅnadana sō.thaparayāpataṅtananidaraśanama ।।6.95.16।।

"Mighty Rama killed the son of thousand eyed Indra, Vali, who resembled mountain Meru. That example is sufficient proof."
ṛṣayamūkēvasaṅśacaivadīnōbhaganamanōrathaḥ .

sugarīvaḥparāpitōrājayaṅparayāpataṅtananidaraśanama ।।6.95.18।।


ṛṣayamūkē Rishyamukha, vasana living, dīnaḥdejected, bhaganamanōrathaḥ disconsolate, sugarīvaḥ Sugriva, rājayama kingdom, parāpitaḥ restored, tata his, parayāpatama sufficient, nidaraśanama example

"Sugriva, who was living on Rishyamukha, dejected and disconsolate was restored with his kingdom. That is sufficient."
dharamārathasahitaṅvākayaṅsaravēṣāṅrakaṣasāṅhitama .

yukataṅvibhīṣaṇēnōkataṅmōhatatasaya na rōcatē ।।6.95.19।।


dharamārathasahitama in accordance with righteousness, saravēṣāma all, rakaṣasāma Rakshasa, hitama good, yukatama appropriate, vibhīṣaṇēna by Vibheeshana, ukatama spoken, vākayama words, mōhāta in delusion, tasaya his, na rōcatē not like d

"Good advice given by Vibheeshana in accordance with righteousness was not liked by him in delusion."
vibhīṣaṇavacaḥkurayādayadisamadhanadānujaḥ .

śamaśānabhūtāduḥkhāratānēyaṅlaṅakābhaviṣayati ।।6.95.20।।

atikāyaṅ ca duramaraṣaṅlakaṣamaṇēnahataṅtadā ।।6.95.21।।

pariyaṅcēnadarajitaṅputaraṅrāvaṇōnāvabudhayatē .


tadā then, mahābalama endowed with extraordinary strength, kumabhakaraṇama Kumbhakarna, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, hatama killed, śarutavā hearing, duramaraṣama difficult to disregard, atikāyama Atikaya, pariyaṅputarama dear son, inadarajitama Indrajith also, lakaṣamaṇēna by Lakshmana, hatama killed, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, nāvabudhayatē not realised.

"Kumbhakarna of extraordinary strength having been killed by Raghava, and even on hearing that Atikaya who is difficult to disregard, and Indrajith, dear son killed by Lakshmana also, Ravana has not realised."
mamaputarōmamabharātāmamabharatāraṇēhataḥ ।।6.95.22।।

itayēṣaśarūyatēśabadōrākaṣasīnāṅkulēkulē .


mama my, putaraḥ son, raṇē in combat, hataḥ killed, mama my, bharātā brother, mama my, bharatā husband, iti thus, ēṣaḥ those, rākaṣasīnāma Rakshasa women, śabadhaḥ sound, kulēkulē in every family, śarūyatē was heard

"My son is killed, my brother is killed, my husband is killed," was the sound heard from every family.
rathaśacāśavāśacanāgāśacahatāḥśatasahasaraśaḥ ।।6.95.23।।

raṇērāmēṇaśūrēṇahatāśacāpipadātayaḥ .


śūrēṇawarriors, rāmēṇa by Rama, raṇē in war, rathāśaca chariots also, aśavāśaca horses also, nāgāśaca elephants, śatasahasaraśaḥ hundreds and thousands, hatāḥ killed, padātayāśacāpi even foot soldiers, hatāḥkilled

"Horses, elephants, warriors, even foot soldiers were killed, chariots were destroyed, and hundreds and thousands struck down in war by Rama."
rudarōvāyadivāviṣaṇuramahēnadarōvāśatakaratuḥ ।।6.95.24।।

hanatinōrāmarūpēṇayadivāsavayamanatakaḥ .

apaśayanatayōbhayasayānatamanāthāvilapāmahē .


rāmēṇa by Rama, hataparavīrāḥ eminent heroes, vayama we, jīvitē life, nirāśāḥ lost, bhayasaya with fear, anatama end, apaśayanataḥ not able to see, anāthāḥ orphans, vilapāmahē weeping

"Eminent heroes killed by Rama, hopes of life lost, not able to see the end of fear, we are like orphans weeping."
rāmahasatādadhaśagarīvaśaśūrōdatatamahāvaraḥ ।।6.95.26।।

idaṅbhayaṅmahāghōraṅsamutapananaṅ na budhayatē .


śūraḥ arrows, datatamahāvaraḥ graced with boon, daśagarīvaḥ ten-headed, rāmahasatāta from the hand s of Rama, samutapananama that appalling danger, idama this way, mahāghōrama most dreadful, bhayama fear, na budhayatē not realised

"Graced with the boon of arrows the ten-headed Ravana has not realised the appalling danger to him from Rama."
taṅ na dēvā na ganadharavā na piśācā na rākaṣasāḥ ।।6.95.27।।

upasṛṣaṭaṅparitarātuṅśakatārāmēṇasamayugē .

"In every war evil portents are noticed rising up, of Rama destroying Ravana. How much more to say?"
pitāmahēnaparītēnadēvadānavarākaṣasaiḥ ।।6.95.29।।

rāvaṇasayābhayaṅdatataṅmanuṣayēbhayō na yācitama .


parītēna lovingly, pitāmahēna by Brahma, rāvaṇasaya Ravana's, dēvadānavarākaṣasaiḥ Devas Danavas and Rakshasas, abhayama protection, datatama provided, manuṣayēbhayaḥfrom humans, na yācitama not sought

"Brahma has lovingly provided protection to Ravana from Devas, Danavas and Rakshasas. He did not seek protection from humans."
tadidaṅmānuṣaṅmanayēparāpataṅniḥsaṅśayaṅbhayama ।।6.95.30।।

jīvitānatakaṅghōraṅrakaṣasāṅrāvaṇasaya ca .


rakaṣasāma Rakshasas, rāvaṇasaya ca Ravana's, jīvitānatakarama fearlessness of death, ghōrama terrific, mānuṣama human beings, tata that, idama this way, bhayama fear, parāpatama attained, manayē think, niḥsaṅśayama no doubt

"Fearlessness of death from human beings attained by Ravana in this way was no doubt terrific to Rakshasas and Ravana."
pīḍayamānāsatubalināvaradānēnarakaṣasā ।।6.95.31।।

dīpasasaisatapōbhiravibudhāḥpitāmahamapūjayana .


varadānēna by the boon, balinā mighty, rakaṣasā Rakshasa, pīḍayamānāḥ tormented, vibudhāḥ learned, dīpasasaiḥ intense, tapōbhiḥ austerities also, pitāmahama Brahma, apūjayana worshipped

"Tormented by the oppression of Ravana, on account of the boon (given to him by the creator) and intensity of his austerities, the learned worshipped Brahma."
dēvatānāṅhitārathāyamahātamāvaipitāmahaḥ ।।6.95.32।।

uvācadēvatāḥsaravāidaṅtuṣaṭōmahadavacaḥ .


tuṣaṭaḥ gratified, mahātamā great self, pitāmahaḥ Brahma, dēvatānāma to Devatas, hitārathāya wishing good, saravāḥall, dēvatāḥ Devatas, idama thus, mahata great, vacaḥwords, uvāca spoke

"Gratified by the worship of Devatas, wishing them good, Brahma spoke these words."
adayaparabhṛtilōkāṅsatarīna saravēdānavarākaṣasāḥ ।।6.95.33।।

bhayēnaparāvṛtānitayaṅvicariṣayanatiśāśavatama .


adayaparabhṛti from now, saravē all, dānavarākaṣasāḥDanavas and Rakshasas, nitayama every day, bhayēna in fear, parāvṛtāḥ range, śāśavatama permanently, tarīna three, lōkāna worlds, vicariṣayanati will wander

"From now ,all Danavas and Rakshasas will range the three worlds every day permanently in fear."
daivataisatusamāgamayasaravaiśacēnadarapurōgamaiḥ ।।6.95.34।।

vṛṣadhavajasataripurahāmahādēvaḥparasāditaḥ .


inadarapurōgamaiḥ marching towards Indra, saravaiḥ all, daivataiḥ Devatas, samāgamaya getting together, vṛṣadhavajaḥ device of bull, taripurahā Tripura, mahādēvaḥ Lord MahaDeva, parasāditaḥpropitiated

"Getting together all the Devatas marched towards Indra and propitiated Lord MahaDeva, destroyer of Tripura, who Bears the sign of bull on his abode."
parasananasatumahādēvōdēvānētadavacō.baravīta ।।6.95.35।।

utapatasayatihitārathaṅvōnārīrakaṣaḥkaṣayāvahā .


parasananaḥ pleased, mahādēvaḥ MahaDeva, dēvāna Devatas, ētata this, vacaḥ words, abaravīta spoke, vaḥfor, hitārathama their benefit, rakaṣaḥkaṣayāvahā for destruction of Rakshasas, nārī woman, utapatasayati will be born

MahaDeva was pleased by the Devatas and spoke these words for their benefit," a woman will be born for the destruction of Rakshasas."
ēṣādēvaiḥparayukatātukaṣudayathādānavāna purā ।।6.95.36।।

bhakaṣayiṣayatinaḥsītārākaṣasaghanīsarāvaṇāna .


purā earlier, kaṣuta hunger, dānavāna yathā Danavas also, dēvaiḥ Devatas, parayukatāḥ instigated, rākaṣasaghanī Rakshasas, ēṣāsītā Sita, sarāvaṇāna that Ravana, naḥ also, bhakaṣayiṣayati will consume

"Just as hunger consumed Danavas earlier, this woman, instigated (by Devatas) will consume all Rakshasas and Ravana."
rāvaṇasayāpanītēnaduravinītasayaduramatēḥ ।।6.95.37।।

ayaṅniṣaṭānakōghōraṅśōkēnasamabhipalutaḥ .


duravinītasaya misconduct, duramatēḥ evil minded, rāvaṇasaya Ravana's, apanītēna immoral action, śōkēna in grief, samabhipalutaḥ attended by, ghōraḥ terrific, ayama us, niṣaṭānakaḥ stares at us

"Because of the misconduct of the evil-minded Ravana's immoral action, terrific destruction attended by grief stares at us."
taṅna paśayāmahēlōkēyōnaḥśaraṇadōbhavēta ।।6.95.38।।

rāghavēṇōpasṛṣaṭānāṅ kālēnēva yugakaṣayē .


yugakaṣayē at the time of destruction of the world, kālēnatime spirit, upasṛṣaṭānāma iva threatened like this, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, naḥ not, lōkē in this world, yaḥwho, śaraṇadaḥ can protect, bhavēta us, tama him, na paśayāmahē not able to perceive

"Threatened like this by Raghava, we cannot perceive anyone in this world who can protect us now. Just as beings are threatened by the time spirit at the end of the destruction of this world, we are threatened."
nāsatinaḥśaraṇaṅkaśacidabhayēmahatitiṣaṭhatāma ।।6.95.39।।

dāvāganivēṣaṭitānāṅhikarēṇūnāṅyathāvanē .


vanē in the forest, dāvāganivēṣaṭitānāma like wild fire, karēṇūnāṅyathā like female elephants, mahati huge, bhayē fear, tiṣaṭhatāma stays, naḥ none, śaraṇama to protect, kaśacita indeed, nāsati not there

"Indeed, there is no protection for us here to stay, as we are like the female elephants in the forest covered by huge wildfire."
parāpatakālaṅkṛtaṅtēnapaulasatayēnamahātamanā ।।6.95.40।।

yataēvaṅbhayaṅdṛṣaṭaṅtamēvaśaraṇaṅgataḥ .


mahātamanā great self, tēnapaulasatayēna by that Paulastya, parāpatakālama opportune time having come, kṛtama did, yataḥ that which, ēvama in that way, bhayama fear, dṛṣaṭama perceiving, tamēva he also, śaraṇaṅgataḥ sought refuge

"Great Vibheeshana of the Paulastya race, perceiving opportune time, has sought refuge out of fear."
itīvasaravārajanīcarasatariyaḥparasaparaṅsamaparirabhayabāhubhiḥ .

viṣēdurāratātibhayābhipīḍitāvinēdurucacaiśacatadāsudāruṇama ।।6.95.41।।


tadā then, saravāḥ all, rajanīcarasatariyaḥ night rangers, parasaparama one another, bāhubhiḥ many, samaparirabhaya holding, āratāḥcried, atibhayābhipīḍitāḥ tormented by great fear, itīva this way, viṣēduḥ despondent, sudāruṇama frightfully, ucacaiḥ with loud noise, vinēduśaca sound

All the night rangers tormented by fear, holding one another, many of them cried aloud making loud noises, in a frightful manner out of despondency.
।। itayāraṣēvālamīkīyēśarīmadarāmāyaṇēādikāvayēyudadhakāṇaḍēpañacanavatitamasasaragaḥ ।।
This is the end of the ninety fifth sarga of the Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
