[Deluded with anger Ravana commands the army generals to start to take revenge on Vanara army in the battlefield and follows them to exhibit his valour.]

āratānāṅrākaṣasīnāṅtulaṅakāyāṅvaikulēkulē .

rāvaṇaḥkaruṇaṅśabadaṅśuśarāvaparidēvitama ।।6.96.1।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, laṅakāyāma in Lanka, kulēkulē house after house, āratānāma piteous cry, rākaṣasīnāma of Rakshasas, karuṇama pathetic, śabadama sound, paridēvitama of the afflicted, śuśarāva heard

Ravana heard from every house in Lanka sounds of piteous cries and pathetic sounds of the afflicted.
sa tudīraghaṅviniḥśavasayamuhūrataṅdhayānamāsathitaḥ .

babhūvaparamakarudadhōrāvaṇōbhīmadaraśanaḥ ।।6.96.2।।


saḥrāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, dīraghama long, viniḥśavasaya remaining silent, muhūratama for a moment, dhayānama in thought, āsathitaḥ assuming, paramakarudadhaḥ angry, bhīmadaraśanaḥ of terrific form, babhūva appeared

sanadaśayadaśanairōṣaṭhaṅkarōdhasamarakatalōcanaḥ .

rākaṣasairapiduradaraśaḥkālāganirivamūrachitaḥ ।।6.96.3।।


daśanaiḥten, ōṣaṭhama teeth, sanadaśaya eyes, karōdhasamarakatalōcanaḥ eyes turned red in wrath, mūrachitaḥ perplexed kālāganiriva like death form, rākaṣasairapi even for the Rakshasas, duradaraśaḥ difficult to look

Biting his teeth, eyes turned red in wrath, Ravana was perplexed. He was difficult to look at even for the Rakshasas.
uvāca ca samīpasathānarākaṣasānarākaṣasēśavaraḥ .

karōdhāvayakatakathasatataraniradahananivacakaṣuṣā ।।6.96.4।।

mahōdaraṅmahāpāraśavaṅvirūpākaṣaṅ ca rākaṣasama .

śīgharaṅvadatasainayāninirayātētimamājañayā ।।6.96.5।।


karōdhāvayakatarathaḥ indistinct in anger, rākaṣasēśavaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, cakaṣuṣā eyes, niradhahananiva as if burning them, tatara there, samīpasathāna nearby, mahōdarama Mahodara, mahāpāraśavama Mahaparsva, rākaṣasama Rakshasas, virūpākaṣama Virupaksha, samīpasathāna close by, rākaṣasāna Rakshasas, uvāca spoke, mama me, ājañayā order, śīgharama quickly, nirayātaiti thus commanded, sainayāni the army, vadata spoke

Thus spoke the Lord of Rakshasas indistinctly in anger with his eyes burning as though it would consume them (Rakshasas). He commanded Mahodara, Mahaparsva and Virupaksha who stood nearby saying" quickly instruct the army to go."
tasayatadavacanaṅśarutavārākaṣasāsatēbhayāraditāḥ .

cōdayāmāsuravayagarānarākaṣasāṅsatānanṛpājañayā ।।6.96.6।।


tērākaṣasāḥ those Rakshasas, tasaya their, tata those, vacanama words, śarutavā on hearing, bhayāraditāḥ stricken with fear, avayagarāna unagitated, tāna they, rākaṣasāna Rakshasa's, nṛpājañayā king's order, cōdayāmāsuḥ started thinking

On hearing the words of the king's order, the Rakshasas stricken with fear, unagitated, started thinking.
tētusaravētathētayukatavārākaṣasābhīmadaraśanāḥ .

kṛtasavasatavayanāḥsaravētēraṇābhimukhāyayuḥ ।।6.96.7।।


saravē all, tē of them, bhīmadaraśanāḥ with frightful looks, rākaṣasāḥ Rakshasa, tathēti Be it so, ukatavā saying, kṛtasavasatavanāḥ having prepared themselves with armor, tē they, saravē all, raṇābhimukhāḥ towards the battlefield, yayuḥwent

All the Rakshasas with frightful looks saying 'Be it so', having prepared themselves with armor went towards the battlefield.
paratipūjayayathānayāyaṅrāvaṇaṅtēmahārathāḥ .

tasathuḥparāñajalayaḥsaravēbharaturavijayakāṅakaṣiṇaḥ ।।6.96.8।।


mahārathāḥ great chariot warriors, saravē all, tē they, yathānayāyama, rāvaṇama Ravana, paratipūjayapraying in return, parāñajalayaḥ with folded palms, bharatuḥ Lord, vijayakāṅakaṣiṇaḥdesiring success, tasathuḥstood

All the great chariot warrior spraying to Ravana with folded palms stood desiring success.
athōvācaparahasayaitānarāvaṇaḥkarōdhamūrachitaḥ .

mahōdaramahāpāraśavauvirūpākaṣaṅ ca rākaṣasama ।।6.96.9।।

Then Ravana who was deluded with anger, laughing aloud spoke to Mahodara, Mahaparsva and Virupaksha.
adayabāṇairadhanuramukasasairayugānatāditayasananibhaiḥ .

rāghavaṅlakaṣamaṇaṅcaivanēṣayāmiyamasādanama ।।6.96.10।।

kariṣayāmiparatīkāramadayaśataruvadhādahama ।।6.96.11।।

parakāśatavaṅgamiṣayanatimadabāṇajaladāvṛtāḥ ।।6.96.12।।


madabāṇajaladāvṛtāḥ my arrows like the clouds cover, anatarikaṣama the sky, parakāśatavama the effulgence, na not, diśaḥ directions, na not, dayauḥ both, na not, sāgarāḥapi even the ocean, na gamiṣayanati not move

"By my arrows covering the sky like clouds there will be no effulgence both in space and in the quarters and not even in the ocean."

dhanuṣāśarajālēnavadhiṣayāmipatatariṇā ।।6.96.13।।

"Today by the network of plumed arrows released from my bow I shall kill the troops of Vanara leaders' part by part."

dhanusasamudarādudabhūtairamathiṣayāmiśarōramibhiḥ ।।6.96.14।।


pavanaujasā as the wind, rathēna on the chariot, dhanuḥsamudarāta ocean of bow, udabhūtaiḥwaves risen, śarōramibhiḥ in the shape of arrows, vānarasainayāni Vanara army, mathiṣayāmi knock

"Seated on the chariot I shall knock out the Vanara army by the waves in the form of arrows released from the ocean of my bow."

adayayūthataṭākānigajavataparamathāmayahama ।।6.96.15।।


adaya now, vayākōśapadamavakatarāṇi their faces resembling open lotuses, padamakēsaravaracasāma filaments of lotuses, yūthataṭākāni ponds in the form of battalions, ahama I, gajavata elephant like, paramathāmi tormenting

"Like an elephant now I shall torment the ponds in the form of battalions of Vanaras shining like the filaments of lotuses, with their faces resembling open lotuses."
saśarairadayavadanaisasaṅakhayēvānarayūthapāḥ .

maṇaḍayiṣayanativasudhāṅsanālairivapaṅakajaiḥ ।।6.96.16।।


adaya now, saṅakhayē, vānarayūthapāḥ Vanara battalions, saśaraiḥ the arrows, vadanaiḥ faces, sanālaiḥ fixed, paṅakajairiva like lotuses, vasudhāma on earth, maṇaḍayiṣayanati will adorn

"Now with the arrows fixed on their faces the Vanara battalions spread on the earth will adorn the earth like lotuses spread on earth."
adayayūthaparacaṇaḍānāṅharīṇāṅdarumayōdhināma .

mukatēnaikēṣuṇāyudadhēbhētasayāmi ca śataṅśatama ।।6.96.17।।

hatōbharatāhatōbharātāyāsāṅ ca catanayōhataḥ .

vadhēnādayaripōsatāsāṅkarōmayaśaruparamārajanama ।।6.96.18।।


adaya today, ripōḥ enemy, vadhēna by destruction, tāsāṅ his, bharātā brother, hataḥkilled, yāsāma whose, tanayaḥ brother, hataḥ killed, tāsāma whose, aśaruparamārajanama wipe the tears, karōmi will do

"Today through the destruction of the enemy I will wipe the tears of the one whose son has been killed, whose brother has been killed."
adayamadabhāṇanirabhinanaiḥparakīraṇairagatacētanaiḥ .

karōmivānarairayudadhēyatanāvēkaṣayatalāṅmahīma ।।6.96.19।।

saravāṅsatāṅsatarapayiṣayāmiśatarumāṅsaiśaśarāraditaiḥ ।।6.96.20।।


adaya today, gōmāyava: whatever animalsgṛdharāśaca eagles, māṅsāśinaḥ flesh eating animals, yē those, aparē enemy, tāna them, saravāna all, śarāraditaiḥ killed by my arrows, śatarumāṅsaiḥ enemy's flesh, tarapayiṣayāmi will provide

"Today I shall provide for whatever animals, eagles or flesh-eating animals the flesh of enemies killed by my arrows."
kalapayatāṅmērathaṅśīgharaṅkaṣiparamānīyatāṅdhanuḥ .

anuparayānatumāṅyudadhēyē.taraśiṣaṭāniśācarāḥ ।।6.96.21।।


mē I, rathaḥ chariot, śīgharama quickly, kalapayatāma be ready, dhanuḥ bow, kaṣiparama instantly, anīyatāma brought, atara here, śiṣaṭāḥ survived, yē those, niśācarāḥ night rangers, yudadhē in combat, māma me, anuparayānatu follow

"Let my chariot and bow be ready and brought here. Let the night rangers who survived follow me."
tasayatadavacanaṅśarutavāmahāpāraśavō.baravīdavacaḥ .

balādhayakaṣāna sathithāṅsatatarabalaṅsaṅtavarayatāmiti ।।6.96.22।।

cōdayanataḥpariyayuralaṅakāṅlaghuparākaramāḥ ।।6.96.23।।


laghuparākaramāḥ mighty valour, balādhayakaṣānatu army chief, samarabadāḥ hurriedly, gṛhēgṛhē house to house, tāna they, rākaṣasāna Rakshasas, cōdayanataḥ searched, laṅakāma in Lanka, pariyayuḥ went

"Let the army leaders of mighty valour go hurriedly to search in every house in Lanka for Rakshasas."
tatōmuhūratānaniṣapētūrākaṣasābhīmadaraśanāḥ .

nadanatōbhīmavadanānānāparaharaṇairabhujaiḥ ।।6.96.24।।

asibhiḥpaṭaṭasai: śūlairagadābhiramusalairahalaiḥ .

śakatibhisatīkaṣaṇadhārābhiramahadabhi: kūṭamudagaraiḥ ।।6.96.25।।

yaṣaṭibhiravimalaiśacakarairaniśitaiśacaparaśavathai: .

bhinadipālaiḥśataghanībhiranayaiśacāpivarāyudhaiḥ ।।6.96.26।।


tataḥ then, bhīmadaraśanāḥ of terrific looks, bhīmavadanāḥ of frightening face, rākaṣasāḥ Rakshasas, nadanataḥ roaring noise, asibhiḥswords, paṭaṭasai: spears, śūlaiḥ tridents, gadābhiḥ maces, musalaiḥ iron bars, halaiḥ halas, tīkaṣadhārābhiḥ sharp and pointed, śakatibhiḥ javelins, mahabhadiḥ huge, kūṭamudagaraiḥ Kutamudgaras, yaṣaṭibhiḥ staffs, vividhaiḥ several, cakaraiḥdiscuss, niśitaiḥ sharp, paraśavadhaiḥaxes, binadipālaiḥ Bhindipalas, śataghabhībhiḥ Sataghnis, anayaiḥ other, varāyudhaiḥ excellent weapons, nānāparaharaṇaiḥ several weapons, bhujaiḥ carrying on shoulders, muhūratāta in a short time, niṣapētuḥ departed

Then the Rakshasas of terrific looks, and frightening faces holding on shoulders roaring departed with swords, spears, tridents, maces, iron bars, halas, sharp pointed javelins, huge Kutamudgaras, staffs and several discusses, sharp Bhindipalas, Sataghnis and many kinds of excellent weapons.
athānayadabalādhayakaṣasasatavarōrāvaṇājañayā .

darutaṅsūtasamāyukataṅyukatāṣaṭaturagaṅrathama .

ārurōhatadābhīmōdīpayamānaṅsavatējasā ।।6.96.27।।


atha and then, balādhayakaṣaḥ chief of army, rāvaṇājañayā by Ravana's order, satavaraḥ quickly, darutama controlled, sūtasamāyukatama with chariot riders, yukatāṣaṭaturagama yoked to eight horses, rathama chariots, athānayana by the order, tadā then, bhīmaḥ dreadful, savatējasā self-effulgent, dīpayamānama glowing, ārurōha ascended

Then by Ravana's command. the chief of the army with chariot rider brought the chariot yoked to eight horses quickly. Then dreadful and self-effulgent glowing Ravana ascended the chariot."
tataḥparayātasasahasārākaṣasairabhahubhiravṛtaḥ ।।6.96.28।।

rāvaṇaḥsatatavagāmabhīrayādadārayananivamēdinīma .


tataḥ then, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, bahubhiḥ many, rākaṣasaiḥ Rakshasas, vṛtaḥ surrounded by, satatavagāmabhīrayāta majestic might, mēdinīma ground, dārayananiva rending the earth, sahasāswiftly, parayātaḥset out

Then Ravana surrounded by many Rakshasas set out swiftly rending the earth with all his might and majesty.
rāvaṇēnābhayanujañātaumahāpāraśavamahōdarau .

virūpākaṣaśacaduradharaṣōrathānāruruhusatadā ।।6.96.29।।


rāvaṇēna by Ravana, abhayanujañātau duly permitted, mahāpāraśavamahōdarau Mahaparsva, Mahodara, duradharaṣaḥ difficult to over power, virūpākaṣaśaca Virupaksha also, tadā then, rathāna chariots, āruruhuḥ ascended

Duly permitted by Ravana, Mahaparsva and Mahodara who are difficult to overpower and also Virupaksha ascended their chariots.
tētuhṛṣaṭāvivaradhanatōbhinadanataivamēdinīma .

nādaṅghōraṅvimuñacanatōnirayayurajayakāṅakaṣiṇaḥ ।।6.96.30।।


tē they, hṛṣaṭāḥ happy, vivarathanataḥ turning round, mēdinīma earth, bhinadanataḥiva as if breaking, ghōrama terrific, nādama roaring, vimuñacanataḥ emerged, jayakāṅakaṣiṇaḥdesiring victory, nirayayuḥsallied forth

Happy leaders, roaring exultantly, as if breaking the earth, emerged, turning round, desiring victory and sallied forth.
tatōyudadhāyatējasavīrakaṣōgaṇabalairavṛtaḥ .

nirayayāvudayatadhanuḥkālānatakayamōpamaḥ ।।6.96.31।।


tataḥ then, tējasavī glowing, rakaṣōgaṇabalaiḥ army of Rakshasas, kālānatakayamōpamaḥ like the time spirit Yama, udayatadhanuḥ lifted bow, yudadhāya for battle, nirayayau went

Then Ravana surrounded by the army of Rakshasas lifted his bow, like the Lord Yama at the time of dissolution of the universe, went for the battle glowing.
tataḥparajavitāśavēnarathēna sa mahārathaḥ .

davārēṇanirayayautēnayatarataurāmalakaṣamaṇau ।।6.96.32।।


tataḥ then, mahārathaḥ mighty charioteer, saḥ he, parajavitāśavēna exceedingly swift horses, rathēna in the chariot, tau those, rāmalakaṣamaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, yatara there, tēna by the, davārēṇa at the entrance, nirayayau made his exit

Then from the mighty chariot yoked to exceedingly swift horses, the mighty charioteer made his exit from the entrance and saw Rama and Lakshmana there.
tatōnaṣaṭaparabhaḥsūrayōdiśaśacatimirāvṛtāḥ .

davijāśacanēduraghōrāśacasañacacāla ca mēdinī ।।6.96.33।।


tataḥ then, sūrayaḥ Sun, naṣaṭaparabhaḥ lost radiance, diśaśaca direction, timirāvṛtāḥ enveloped by gloom, ghōrāḥ frightening, davijāśaca birds, nēduḥ made fearful sounds, mēdinī ca earth, sañacacāla shook

Then the Sun lost his radiance, and the four directions were enveloped by gloom, the birds made fearful noise and the earth shook.
vavaraṣarudhiraṅdēvaśacasakhaluśacaturaṅagamāḥ .

dhavajāgarēnayapatadagṛdharōvinēduśacāśivāḥśivāḥ ।।6.96.34।।


dēvaḥ Deva, rudhirama red blood, vavaraṣa rained, turaṅagamāḥ horses, casakhaluśaca stumbled, dhavajāgarē on top of post, gṛdharaḥ eagle, nayapatata settled, aśivāḥfrightening, śivāśaca jackals, vinēduḥhowled

Devas rained blood, horses stumbled, eagles settled on top of the post and jackals howled in a frightening way.
nayanaṅcāsaphuradavāmaṅvāmōbāhurakamapata .

vivaraṇavadanaśasākatiṅcidabharaśayatasavanaḥ ।।6.96.35।।


vāmama left, nayanaṅ ca eyes too, asaphurata twitched, vāmaḥ left, bāhuḥ arm, akamapata quivered, vivaraṇavadanaḥ pale face, āsīta turned, kiñacita indeed, savanaḥ tone, abharaśayata turned hoarse

His left eye twitched, left arm quivered, face turned pale and indeed his tone became hoarse.
tatōniṣapatatōyudadhēdaśagarīvasayarakaṣasaḥ .

raṇēnidhanaśaṅsīnirūpāṇayētānijajañirē ।।6.96.36।।


tataḥ thereafter, rakaṣasaḥ Rakshasa, daśagarīvasaya Ravana's, yudadhē in battle, niṣapatataḥ set forth, raṇē in battle, nidhanaśaṅsīni predicting death, ētāni all these, rūpāṇi forms, jajañirē appeared

Thereafter as Ravana set forth for the battle, all the following forms predicting his death appeared.
anatarikaṣātapapātōlakānirāghatasamaniraghāsavanā .

vinēduraśivāgṛdharāvāyasairabhimiśaritāḥ ।।6.96.37।।


anatarikaṣāta from the sky, niraghātasamaniḥsavanā resembling thunder, ulakā meteor, papāta fallen, vāyasaiḥ from the sky, abhimiśaritāḥ coupled with, aśivāḥ inauspicious, gṛdharāḥ eagle, vinēduḥ cries

A meteor had fallen from the sky resembling thunder, coupled with inauspicious eagle cries.
ētānacinatayanaghōrānutapātānasamavasathitāna .

nirayayaurāvaṇōmōhādavadhārathaṅkālacōditaḥ ।।6.96.38।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, kālacōditaḥ impelled by time, ghōrāna terrific, samavasathitāna that which happened, ētāna these, utapātāna taken place, acinatayana not thinking, mōhāta in delusion, vadārathama for the destruction, nirayayau set forth

Impelled by the time spirit, Ravana set forth without thinking of the terrific portents that had appeared in delusion for his destruction.
tēṣāṅturathaghōṣēṇarākaṣasānāṅmahātamanāma .

vānarāṇāmapicamūrayudadhāyaivābhayavaratata ।।6.96.39।।


mahātamanāma great, tēṣāṅrākaṣasānāma those Rakshasas, rathaghōṣēṇa sound of chariots, vānarāṇāma Vanaras, camūḥapi army troops also, yudadhāyaiva for the sake of battle, abhayavaratata stood facing.

The Vanaras stood facing the great sound of Rakshasa troops, on hearing the sounds of chariots for the sake of battle.
tēṣāṅtutumulaṅyudadhaṅbabhūvakapirakaṣasāma .

anayōnayamāhavayānānāṅkarudadhānāṅjayamicachatāma ।।6.96.40।।


anayōnayama one another, āhavayānānāma challenged, karudadhānāma angry, jayama victory, icachatāma desiring, tēṣāma them, kapirakaṣasāma Vanaras and Rakshasas, tumulama intense, yudadhama war, babhūva happened

Intense battle took place between the angry Vanaras and Rakshasas challenging one another desiring victory.
tataḥkarudadhōdaśagarīvaśaśaraiḥkāñacanabhūṣaṇaiḥ .

vānarāṇāmanīkēṣucakārakadanaṅmahata ।।6.96.41।।


taḥ there, karudadhaḥ angered, daśagarīvaḥ Ten headed, kāñacanabhūṣaṇaiḥ adorned with golden ornaments, śaraiḥ arrows, vānarāṇāma at the Vanaras, anīkēṣu using, mahata great, kadanama war, cakāra happened

There the ten-headed Ravana using arrows adorned with gold plumes struck Vanaras and a great war took place.
vikṛtataśirasaḥkēcidarāvaṇēnavalīmukhāḥ .

kēcidavicachinanahṛdayāḥkēcicacharōtaravivarajitāḥ ।।6.96.42।।


kēcita some, valīmukhāḥ Vanaras, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, vikṛtataśirasaḥ deformed heads, kēcita indeed, vichinanahṛdayāḥ pierced hearts, kēcita some, śarōtaravarajitāḥ ears cut off

Some Vanaras ' heads were deformed, some were pierced in their hearts, and some had their ears cut off.
nirucachavāsāhatāḥkēcitakēcitapāraśavēṣudāritāḥ .

kēcidavibhinanaśirasaḥkēcicacakaṣuravinākṛtāḥ ।।6.96.43।।

A few were made lifeless, some had their flanks split, some had their heads smashed and few were deprived of their eyes.

tatasatatasatasayaśaraparavēgaṅsōḍhuṅ na śēkurahariyūthapāsatē ।।6.96.44।।


daśānanaḥ ten-eyed, karōdhanivṛtatanētaraḥ rolling eyes filled with anger, saṅakhayē drove in the battlefield, yataḥyataḥ wherever, abhayēti went, tatasatataḥ there and there, tē those, hariyūthapāḥ monkey troops, śaraparavēgama by the speed of arrows, sōḍhuma mad fury, na śēkuḥ not with stand

In the battlefield wherever Ravana drove in fury, rolling his eyes filled with anger, the monkey troops could not withstand the speed of his arrows.
