[Major conflict between Sugriva and Mahodara, minister of Ravana. Death of Mahodara in the hands of Sugriva.]

hanayamānēbalētūraṇamanayōnayaṅtēmahāmṛthē .

sarasīvamahāgharamēsōpakaṣīṇēbabhūvatuḥ ।।6.98.1।।

mahāmṛthē in the major conflict, anayōnayama one another, hanayamānē destroying, balē army, mahāgharamē midsummer, sarasīva lakes, tūraṇama totally, sōpakaṣīṇē water goes down, babhūvatuḥ seemed

In the major conflict, each one destroying the other army, it seemed like the mid-summer lakes totally lost its water.

savabalasayavighātēnavirūpākaṣavadhēna ca .

babhūvadaviguṇaṅkarudadhōrāvaṇōrākaṣasādhipaḥ ।।6.98.2।।

rākaṣasādhipaḥ Lord of Rakshasas, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, savabalasaya his army, ghātēna destruction, virūpākaṣavadhēna ca fall of Virupaksha, daviguṇama doubly, karudadhaḥ angry, babhūva became

The Lord of Rakshasas, Ravana, became doubly angry by the destruction of his army and fall of Virupaksha.

parakaṣīṇaṅtubalaṅdṛṣaṭavāvadhayamānaṅvalīmukhaiḥ .

babhūvāsayavayathāyudadhēparēkaṣayadaivaviparayayama ।।6.98.3।।

yudadhē in war, valīmukhaiḥ by the Vanaras, vadhayamānama killed, parakaṣīṇama highly reduced, tubalama army, parēkaṣaya seeing, daivaviparayayama adversary of god's grace, dṛṣaṭavā witnessing, asaya his, vayathā agony, babhūva experienced

Rakshasa's army was killed by Vanaras and drastically reduced. Seeing the adversary of God's grace, Ravana was agonized on witnessing it.

uvāca ca samīpasathaṅmahōdaramarinadamama .

asaminakālēmahābāhōjayāśātavayimēsathitā ।।6.98.4।।

samīpasathama close by, arinadamama difficult to encounter, mahōdarama Mahodara, uvāca spoke, mahābāhō mighty armed, asamina his, kālē at this time, mē for me, jayāśā hope of victory, tavayi you are, sathitā in you

And then Ravana spoke to Mahodara who was close by, one who is difficult to encounter, saying " At this time the hope for my victory is centered in you."

jahiśatarucamūṅvīradaraśayādayaparākaramama .

bharatṛpiṇaḍasayakālō।।yaṅniradēṣaṭuṅsādhuyudhayatāma ।।6.98.5।।

vīra heroic, śatarucamūca enemy army, jahi total destruction, adaya today, parākaramama valour, daraśaya exhibit, ayama this, bharatṛṣiṇaḍasaya for having received subsistence, niradēṣaṭuma to repay, kālaḥ time, sādhu this is, yudhayatāma fight well in war

"O heroic Mahodara! Today, exhibit your valour by destroying the enemy army. Having received my subsistence, this is the time to repay. Fight well in war."

ēvamukatasatathētayukatavārākaṣasēnadarōmahōdaraḥ .

paravivēśārisēnāṅtāṅpataṅagaivapāvakama ।।6.98.6।।

ēvama in that way, ukataḥ having spoken, rākaṣasēnadaraḥ Rakshasa king, mahōdaraḥ Mahodara, tathābe it so iti thus, ukatavā spoken, pataṅagaḥmoth, pāvakama iva enters the fire, tāma arisēnāma that army of enemy, paravivēśa entered

Having spoken like that by the king of Rakshasas, Mahodara entered the army of the enemy like a moth enters fire.

tatasasakadanaṅcakarēvānarāṇāṅmahābalaḥ .

bharatṛvākayēnatējasavīsavēnavīrayēṇacōditaḥ ।।6.98.7।।

tataḥ thereafter, mahābalaḥ mighty, tējasavī brilliant, saḥhe, bharatṛvākayēna by the word of king, savēna himself in obedience, vīrayēṇa valiance, cōditaḥ inspired, vānarāṇāma with Vanaras, kadanama war, cakarē went

Thereafter, the mighty and brilliant Mahodara, in obedience to the word of the king, inspired by his own valour, went to fight with Vanaras.

vānarāśacamahāsatatavāḥparagṛhavaḥvipulāśaśilāḥ .

paraviśayāribalaṅbhīmaṅjaghanusatērajanīcarāna ।।6.98.8।।

mahāsatatavāḥ mighty, tē they, vānarāśaca Vanaras also, vipulāḥ huge, śilāḥ rocks, parigṛhaya seizing hold, bhīmama frightening, aribalama enemy army, paraviśaya entered, rajanīcarāna night ranger, jaghanuḥ went

The mighty Vanaras also seizing huge rocks entered into the frightening enemy army of the Rakshasas.

mahōdarasatusaṅakṛdadhaśaśaraiḥkāñacanabhūṣaṇaiḥ .

cicachēdapāṇipādōrunavānarāṇāṅmahāhavē ।।6.98.9।।

mahāhavē great war, susaṅakṛdadhaḥ highly enraged, mahōdaraḥ Mahodara, kāñacanabhūṣaṇaiḥdecked with gold śaraiḥ arrows, vānarāṇāma Vanaras, pāṇipādōru hands legs and thighs, cicachēda shattered

In that great war, enraged Mahodara with arrows decked in gold shattered the Vanaras by attacking on hands, legs, and thighs.

tatasatēvānarāsasaravērākaṣasairaraditābhṛśama .

diśōdaśadarutāḥkēcitakēcitasugarīvamāśaritāḥ ।।6.98.10।।

tataḥ thereafter, saravē all, tēvānarāḥ those Vanaras, rākaṣasaiḥ Rakshasas, bhṛśama pain, araditāḥunable to bear, kēcita some, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, darutāḥfled, kēcita some, sugarīvama to Sugriva, āśaritāḥfor refuge,

Thereafter, unable to bear the pain, those Vanaras hit by Rakshasas, went in ten directions and some went to Sugriva for refuge.

parabhaganāṅsamarēdṛṣaṭavāvānarāṇāṅmahācamūma .

abhidudarāvasugarīvōmahōdaramananatarama ।।6.98.11।।

Seeing the great army of Vanaras defeated in the conflict, Sugriva rushed towards Mahodara.

paragṛhayavipulāṅghōrāṅmahīdharasamāṅśilāma .

cikaṣēpa sa mahātējāsatadavadhāyaharīśavaraḥ ।।6.98.12।।

mahātējāḥ endowed with high energy, harīśavaraḥ monkey Lord, mahīdharasamāma closely resembling mountain, ghōrāma dreadful, vipulāma huge, śilāma rock, paragṛhaya seizing, tadavadhāya to kill, cikaṣēpa hurled

Endowed with great energy, Sugriva, the monkey Lord, seizing a huge mountain like dreadful rock, hurled to kill Mahodara.

tāmāpatatanīṅsahasāśilāṅdṛṣaṭavāmahōdaraḥ .

asamabharānatasatatōbāṇairanirabibhēdadurāsadāma ।।6.98.13।।

tataḥ then, mahōdaraḥMahodara, sahasā immediately, āpatanatīma coming towards him, durāsadāma difficult to break, tāṅśilāma that rock, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, asamabharānataḥ not bewildered, bāṇaiḥ arrows, nirabibhēda struck and broke

Then seeing the formidable rock coming towards him, he was not bewildered and immediately struck and broke it with his arrows.

rakaṣasātēnabāṇaughairanikṛtatāsāsahasaradhā .

nipapātaśilābhūmaugṛdharacakaramivākulama ।।6.98.14।।

śailā that rock, tēnarakaṣasā by that Rakshasa, sahasaradhā thousands of pieces, nikṛtatā broken, sā that, ākulama shattered, gṛdharacakaramiva like a flock of vultures, bhūmau on the ground, nipapāta fell

That rock, struck by Mahodara fell on the ground shattered and broken into a thousand pieces.

tāṅtubhinanāṅśilāṅdṛṣaṭavāsugarīvaḥkarōdhamūrachitaḥ .

sālamutapāṭayacikaṣēparākaṣasēraṇamūrathani ।।6.98.15।।

sugarīvaḥ Sugriva, bhinanāma fragmented, tāṅśilāma that rock, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, karōdhamūrachitaḥ deluded with anger, sālama sala trees, utapāṭaya tearing up, cikaṣēpa shattered, saḥ that, naikadhā one, rākaṣasē on the Rakshasa, raṇamūradani in the battlefield

Seeing the fragmented rock, Sugriva was deluded with anger, and tearing up a sala tree, he shattered on the Rakshasa (Mahodara) in the battlefield.

śaraiśacavidadārainaṅśūraḥparapurañajayaḥ .

sa dadaraśatataḥkarudadhaḥparighaṅpatitaṅbhuvi ।।6.98.16।।

śūraḥ shafts, parapurañajayaḥscourge of enemy forces, ēnama in that way, śaraiḥshafts, vidadāra lacerated, tataḥ them, saḥ that, karudadhaḥangry, bhuvi ground, patitama fallen, parighama tree, dadaraśa beheld

Mahodara, a scourge of enemy forces, who lacerated Sugriva in that manner, angry, made the tree fall on the ground.

āvidhayatu sa taṅdīpataṅparighaṅtasayadaraśayana .

parighāgarēṇavēgēnajaghānāsayahayōtatamāna .6.98.17।।

saḥ he, dīpatama glowing, taṅparighama that iron bar, āvidhaya failing, tasaya his, daraśayana exhibiting, ugaravēgēna with terrible speed, parighāgarēṇa top of bar, asaya its, hayōtatamāna best of horses, jaghāna struck

Sugriva, picking up that glowing iron bar, exhibiting its top, whirling it around, struck the best of horses of Mahodara.

tasamādadhatahayāvadīraḥsō।।vapalutayamahārathāta .

gadāṅjagarāhasaṅkarudadhōrākaṣasō।।thamahōdaraḥ ।।6.98.18।।

atha and then, vīraḥ hero, rākaṣasaḥ Rakshasa, saḥ that, mahōdaraḥMahodara, hatahayāta destroyed horses, tasamāta from there, mahārathāta great chariot, avapalutaya jumping down, karudadhaḥ angry, gadāma mace, jagarāha took hold

Then the hero, Mahodara, his horses destroyed, jumped from the great chariot, and took hold of a mace.

gadāparighahasatautauyudhivīrausamīyatuḥ .

naradanataugōvṛṣaparakhayaughanāvivasavidayutau ।।6.98.19।।

gadāparighahasatau carrying a mace and an iron bar in their hands, vīrau heroes, gōvṛṣaparakhayau like two bulls, tau both, savidayutau charged with lightning, ghanāviva like clouds, naradanatau roaring, yudhi in the battlefield, samīyatuḥ came together

Both the heroes, Mahodara and Sugriva like two bulls holding mace and iron bar respectively, like clouds charged with lightning came roaring in the battlefield.

tataḥkarudadhōgadāṅtasayaicikaṣēparajanīcaraḥ .

javalatanīṅbhāsakarābhāsāṅsugarīvāyamahōdaraḥ ।।6.98.20।।

tataḥ then, tasayai by their, karudadhaḥanger, rajanīcaraḥ night ranger, mahōdaraḥMahodara, javalanatīma glowing, bhāsakarābhāsāma like the sun, gadāmamace, sugarīvāya at Sugriva, cikaṣēpa flung

Then provoked by anger, the night ranger, Mahodara flung his mace at Sugriva which shone like the Sun.

gadāṅtāṅsumahāghōrāmāpatatanīṅmahābalaḥ .

sugarīvōrōṣatāmarākaṣasasamudayamayamahāhavē ।।6.98.21।।

ājaghānagadāṅtasayaparighēṇaharīśavara .

papāta sa gadōdabhinanaḥparighasatasayabhūtalē ।।6.98.22।।

mahāhavē terrible conflict, āpatanatīma falling, sumahāghōrāma very dreadful, tāṅgadāma that mace, mahābalaḥ mighty, rōṣatāmarākaṣaḥ eyes turned red in anger, harīśavaraḥ Lord of monkeys, sugarīvaḥSugriva, samudayamaya struck, tasaya his, gadāma mace, ājaghāna hit, gadōdabhinanaḥ mace broken into pieces, tasaya his, parighaḥiron bar, bhūtalē on the ground, papāta fell.

In that terrible conflict, seeing the mace broken and falling, mighty Sugriva, whose eyes turned red in anger, lifted up his iron bar, struck at the mace of the Rakshasa. The mace fell on the ground and broke into pieces.

tatōjagarāhatējasavīsugarīvōvasudhātalāta .

āyasaṅmusalaṅghōraṅsaravatōhēmabhūṣitama ।।6.98.23।।

tataḥ then, tējasavī energetic, sugarīvaḥ Sugriva, vasudhātalāta from the ground, saravataḥ all over, hēmabhūṣitama encrusted with gold, ghōrama frightening, āyasama on all sides, musalama steel club, jagarāhapicked up

Then, energetic Sugriva picked from the ground a frightening steel club encrusted with gold on all sides.

sa tamudayamayacikaṣēpasō।।payanayāṅvayākaṣipadagadāma .

bhinanāvanayōnayamāsādayapētatudadaraṇītalē ।।6.98.24।।

saḥ he, tama that, udayamaya taking up, cikaṣēpa shattered, sō।।pi on Mahodara, anayāma other, gadāma mace, vayākaṣipatacolliding with each other, tau both, anayōnayama one another, āsādaya taking up, bhinanau broken, dharaṇītalē on the surface of the earth, pētatuḥ fell,

Sugriva took up the steel club and hurled at Mahodara who took another mace and hit back. Both collided with each other and shattered; they fell down on the surface of the earth.

tatōganaparaharaṇaumuṣaṭibhayāṅtausamīyatuḥ .

tējōbalasamāviṣaṭaudīpatāvivahutāśanau ।।6.98.25।।

tataḥ thereafter, tējōbalasamāviṣaṭau fully endowed with strength, tau both, bhinanaparaharaṇau weapons broken, dīpatau glowing, hutāśanauiva like fire, muṣaṭibhayāma with their fists, samīyatuḥ fought

Thereafter, both of them fully endowed with strength, with their weapons broken, who resembled glowing fires, fought with their fists.

jaghanatusatautadānayōnayaṅvēdatuśacapunaḥpunaḥ .

talaiśacānayōnayamahatayapētatuśacamahītalē ।।6.98.26।।

tadā then, tau both, punaḥpunaḥagain and again, nadanatau roaring, anayōnayama one another, jaghanatuḥstriking, anayōnayama one another, talaiḥ palms, āhataya slapped, mahītalē on the ground, pētatuḥ ca fallen, rolled

Then both of them again and again striking each other slapping with palms fell down and rolled on the ground.

utapētatusatatasatūraṇaṅjaghanatuśacaparasaparama .

bhujaiśacikaṣipaturavīrāvanayōnayamaparājitau ।।6.98.27।।

tadā then, tūraṇama quickly, utapētatuḥ getting up, parasaparama one another, jaghanatuḥ ca striking, vīrau heroes, aparājitau never been defeated, anayōnayama one another, bhujaiḥarms, cikaṣipatuḥ pushed

Then quickly getting up striking one another, both the heroes who have never been defeated, pushed each other by their arms.

jagamatusatauśaramaṅvīraubāhuyudhēparaṅtapau .

ajahāratadākhaḍagamadūraparivaratinama ।।6.98.28।।

rākaṣasaśacaramaṇāsāradhaṅmahāvēgōmahōdaraḥ .

paraṅtapau scourge of their enemies, tau both, vīrau heroes, bāhuyudadhē wrestling, śaramama exhausted, jagamatuḥ in fighting, tadā then, mahāvēgaḥ at great speed, rākaṣasaḥ Rakshasa, mahōdaraḥ Mahodara, adūraparivaratinama not far from there, khaḍagama sword, caramaṇāsāradhama along with shield, jahāra picked up

Both being scourge of their enemies, both heroes wrestling were exhausted with fighting. Then the Rakshasa picked up a sword lying not far from there along with a shield.

thaiva ca mahākhaḍagaṅcaramaṇāpatitaṅsaha ।।6.98.29।।

jagarāhavānaraśarēṣaṭhasasugarīvōvēgavatataraḥ।।

tathaiva likewise, vēgavatataraḥ endowed with speed, vānaraśarēṣaṭhaḥ champion of Vanaras, sugarīvaḥSugriva, patitama fallen down, mahākhaḍagama huge sword, caramaṇāsaha along with shield, jagarāha took up.

Likewise, Sugriva endowed with speed, a champion of Vanaras, took up a huge sword fallen down with a shield.

tauturōṣaparītāṅagaunaradanatāvabhayadhāvatāma ।।6.98.30।।

udayatāsīraṇēhṛṣaṭāvubhauśasataraviśāradau .

tataḥ then, rōṣaparītāṅagau whose limbs were ceased overcome by anger, udayatāsīsprang forward, śasataraviśāradau knowledgeable in the use of weapons, raṇē in battle, hṛdi at heart, aṣaṭāvubhau both with joy, naradanatē roaring, abhayadhāvatāma to destroy one another

Then the two, whose limbs ceased, who were knowledgeable in the use of weapons, furious, sprang forward in the battle, both with joy, roaring to destroy one another.

dakaṣiṇaṅmaṇaḍalaṅcōbhausutūraṇaṅsamaparīyatuḥ ।।6.98.31।।

anayōnayamabhisaṅakṛdadhau jayē paraṇihitāvubhau .

anayōnayama one another, abhisaṅakṛdadhau enraged at the other, jayē victory, paraṇihitau stretching forth, ubhau both, sutūraṇama at great speed, paradakaṣiṇama left to right, maṇaḍalama in circles, samaparīyatuḥ encountered

Enraged at one another, intent to win, both stretched forth at great speed, going from left to right in circles and encountered each other.

tuśūrōmahāvēgōvīrayaśalāghīmahōdaraḥ ।।6.98.32।।

mahācaramaṇitaṅkhaḍagaṅpātayāmāsaduramatiḥ .

śūraḥwarrior, vīrayaśalāghī proud of valour, duramatiḥevil minded, saḥmahōdaraḥ that Mahodara, mahāvēgaḥ endowed with great speed, tama them, khaḍagama swords, mahācaramaṇi on the huge shield, pātayāmāsa hurled

Mahodara, a warrior, evil minded one, endowed with great speed, hurled the sword on the shield of Sugriva.

laganamutakaraṣataḥkhaḍagaṅkhaḍagēnakapikuñajaraḥ ।।6.98.33।।

jahārasaśirasatarāṇaṅkuṇaḍalōpahitaṅśiraḥ .

kapikuñajaraḥ elephant of the monkeys, laganama struck to, khaḍagama sword, utakaraṣataḥextracting, saśirasatarāṇama head with helmet, kuṇaḍalōpagatama decked with earrings, śiraḥhead, khaḍagēna sword, jahārasevered

While Mahodara was extracting the sword stuck to the head, Sugriva, the elephant of the monkeys, severed the head of Mahodara which was decked with earrings and helmet.

nikṛtataśirasasatasayapatitasayamahītalē ।।6.98.34।।

tadabalaṅrākaṣasēnadarasayadṛṣaṭavātatara na tiṣaṭatē .

nikṛtataśirasaḥ head severed and fallen, tasaya his, mahītalē on the ground, patitasaya fallen, rākaṣasēnadarasaya Rakshasa king's, balama army, tata there, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, tatara there, sa tiṣaṭatē those seated there ran

Mahodara's head severed and fell on the ground. Seeing that Rakshasa king's army ran from there.

hatavāṅtaṅvānaraisasāradhaṅnanādamuditōhariḥ ।।6.98.35।।

cukarōdha ca daśagarīvōbabhauhṛṣaṭaśacarāghavaḥ .

hariḥ Sugriva the monkey, tama their, hatavā killed, vānaraiḥ Vanaras, sāradhama all, muditaḥ happy, nanāda shouted, daśagarīvaḥten headed, cukarōdha ca angry, rāghavaśaca Raghava also, hṛṣaṭaḥ glad, babhau became

Sugriva, the monkey leader having killed Mahodara, the Vanaras shouted in joy. The ten headed Ravana became enraged. Raghava was glad.

viṣaṇaṇavadanāsasaravērākaṣasādīnacētasaḥ ।।6.98.36।।

vidaravanatitatasasaravēbhayavitarasatacētasaḥ .

saravē all, rākaṣasāḥ Rakshasas, viṣaṇaṇavadanāḥ sad face, dīnacētasaḥ dull and piteous, saravē all, bhayavitarasatacētasaḥ out of fear, tataḥ there, vidaravanati ran

All the Rakshasas became dull and piteous with sad faces. Out of fear they ran.

mahōdaraṅtaṅnavipātayabhūmaumahāgirēḥkīraṇamivaikadēśama .

sūrayātamajasatatarararājalakaṣamayasūrayasasavatējōbhirivāparadhṛṣayaḥ ।।6.98.37।।

sūrayātamajaḥ son of sun god, mahāgirēḥ great mountain, kīraṇama thrown, ēkadēśama iva one part, taṅmahōdarama Mahodara, bhūmau on the ground, navipātaya broken, aparadhṛṣayaḥunassailable, sūrayaḥ Sun, savatējōbhiriva by his radiance, tatara there, lakaṣama Lakshmi, rarāja shone

Just as a part of a huge mountain thrown down, an unassailable Mahodara, fallen on the ground, shone there like Lakshmi, just as the Sun shines by his own radiance.

athavijayamavāpayavānarēnadarasasamaramukhēsurasidadhayakaṣasaṅaghai .

anavitalagataiśacabhūtasaṅaghairaharaṣaruṣasamākulitaisatutōmahātamā ।।6.98.38।।

atha and then, vānarēnadaraḥVanara king, samaramukhē in the forefront of battle, vijayama victory, avāpaya attained, surasidadhayakaṣasaṅaghai Suras, Siddhas, Yakshas, haruṣasamākulitaiḥ very delighted, anavitalagaiḥon the land, bhūtasaṅaghai ca all beings, māhātamānāḥ great selves

Thereafter, Suras, Siddhas, Yakshas of heaven and all beings on the land, great selves who were gazing at the battle felt highly delighted seeing the victory of the Vanara king in the forefront of the battlefield.
।। itayāraṣēvālamīkīyēśarīmadarāmāyaṇēādikāvayēyudadhakāḍēaṣaṭānavatitamaḥsaragaḥ ।।
This is the end of the ninety eighth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
