Hanuman’s appearance as he was about to leap 5.1.7-183

Hanuman appeared like a shining serpent in a deep pond as he stood on the mountain. The mountain is compared to a deep pond because of its dark color. (‘Madhyamena arcisa’ sloka 16). According to Tirtha it refers to ‘the sacred fire called Madhyama’. But Tilaka prefers to say, ‘by the flames in the middle part’. (‘asasada kapih katyam’ sloka 33), while Hanuman’s chest and head stretched forward and legs pressed below, his posture appeared like ‘katidesa’, meaning ‘a posture of the waist’.
(‘Pibanniva maharnavam’ sloka 55), Hanuman who had his face downwards appeared as if he was drinking the sea water. (The figure of speech is here utpreksa). When he raised his head he appeared as if he was desirous of drinking the sky itself! (‘saradabhra iva atatam vibabhraje’ sloka 71). ‘Hanuman shone like a cloud in the autumn, as he was white like a cloud (sloka 70). He looked as if he went along counting the waves. (‘Chaya carutara abhavat’ sloka74).The shadow of Hanuman looked more beautiful says the commentator as it was the shadow during noon. (‘Sarvasya ca bhayavaham’ sloka 142) Another reading is, ‘bhayasya ca bhayavaham’ which means causing fear to the entire world. (‘Kayamatram’ sloka 183).Tirtha opines that it means ‘having reduced his body sufficient enough to be devoured by Simhika’. According to Kataka, ‘the word ‘matra’ signifies’ a small being.

5.1.187

The commentator opines, ‘Hanuman was by himself powerful and so he could move at his free will. Earlier having secured the skyway it was only pretence on the part of Hanuman when he took the support of the peak of the Mahendra mountain for his flight.’ The poet exaggerates by stating that ‘Hanuman was created in order to destroy Ravana, like Rama in his own form!’
