Rama speaks on values of life (Purusarthas) 2.53.2-27
“Over three values of life on purusharthas in this world, the value of desire (kama) holds sway. What an irony that the father, in his lust for a woman, throws away an illustrious son! – a thing even a layman will not do. That our father who is wise, learned in all branches of knowledge, who is an emperor, sufficiently aged committed this unbecoming act proves sufficiently strongly that between righteousness of dharma and desire or kama, it is kama (gratification of earthly desires) that holds sway.” Rama tells Lakshmana.
If one should ask how Rama levels such a charge when he knows that the bonds of truth fettered the king?, the answer is “Which man, even though ignorant, would actually abandon, for the sake of a woman, an illustrious son as our father has done?”
