[Dasaratha enters the city of Ayodhya with his sons and their wives--Bharata and Satrughna depart with their maternal uncle--Rama's virtues described.]

gatē rāmē praśāntātmā rāmō dāśarathirdhanu:.

varuṇāyāpramēyāya dadau hastē sasāyakam৷৷1.77.1৷৷


rāmē when Rama, gatē had departed, praśāntātmā with serene mind, dāśarathi: son of Dasaratha, rāma: Rama, sasāyakam together with arrow, dhanu: bow, apramēyāya immeasurable, strength, varuṇāya to Varuna, hastē in his hand, dadau gave.

When Parasurama departed, Rama, son of Dasaratha with a serene mind gave the bow along with the arrow to Varuna of immeasurable strength.
abhivādya tatō rāmō vasiṣṭhapramukhānṛṣīn.

pitaraṅ vihvalaṅ dṛṣṭvā prōvāca raghunandana:৷৷1.77.2৷৷


tata: thereafter, raghunandana: descendant of Raghu, rāma: Rama, vasiṣṭhapramukhān Vasishta and other, ṛṣīn rishis, abhivādya having paid obeisance, vihvalam agitated, pitaram father, dṛṣṭvā having seen, prōvāca said.

Thereafter Rama the descendant of the Raghus, paid obeisance to Vasishta and other rishis, and looked at his father who appeared agitated said:
jāmadagnyō gatō rāma: prayātu caturaṅgiṇī.

ayōdhyābhimukhī sēnā tvayā nāthēna pālitā৷৷1.77.3৷৷


jāmadagnya: son of Jamadagni, rāma: Rama, gata: had gone, nāthēna by being a lord, tvayā by you, pālitā ruled, caturaṅgiṇī sēnā four divisions of army, ayōdhyābhimukhī towards Ayodhya, prayātu let it advance.

"Parasurama, son of Jamadagni, has gone. Let the four divisions of the army of which you are the commander proceed towards Ayodhya.
sandiśasva mahārāja sēnāṅ tvacchāsanē sthitām.

śāsanaṅ kāṅkṣatē sēnā cātakālirjalaṅ yathā৷৷1.77.4৷৷


mahārāja O! King, tvacchāsanē in your command, sthitām remaining, sēnām army, sandiśasva direct it, cātakāli: rows of Chataka birds, jalaṅ yathā like water, sēnā army, śāsanaṅ command, kāṅkṣatē is seeking.

The army which is under your command O King! is awaiting your orders like the chatakas awaiting water. Direct them (to proceed).
rāmasya vacanaṅ śrutvā rājā daśaratha ssutam.

bāhubhyāṅ sampariṣvajya mūrdhni cāghrāya rāghavam৷৷1.77.5৷৷

gatō rāma iti śrutvā hṛṣṭa: pramuditō nṛpa:.

punarjātaṅ tadā mēnē putramātmānamēva ca৷৷1.77.6৷৷


rājā king, daśaratha: Dasaratha, rāmasya Rama's, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, sutam son, rāghavam Rama, bāhubhyām with hands, sampariṣvajya having embraced, mūrdhni on the forehead, āghrāya ca having smelt (kissed in delight), rāma: Parasurama, gata: iti had departed, śrutvā having listened, hṛṣṭa: filled with joy, pramudita: exceedingly delighted, nṛpa: king, putram son, tadā then, ātmānamēva himself as well, puna: again, jātam having been born, mēnē considered.

On hearing the words 'Parasurama has departed' from Rama, king Dasaratha embraced him and kissed his forehead. The king, immensely happy, felt he and his son were reborn.
cōdayāmāsa tāṅ sēnāṅ jagāmāśu tata: purīm.

patākādhvajinīṅ ramyāṅ tūryōdghuṣṭanināditām৷৷1.77.7৷৷

siktarāja pathāṅ ramyāṅ prakīrṇakusumōtkarām .

rājapravēśasumukhai: paurairmaṅgalavādibhi:৷৷1.77.8৷৷

sampūrṇāṅ prāviśadrājā janaughaissamalaṅkṛtām.


rājā king Dasaratha, tām that, sēnām army, cōdayāmāsa directed, patākādhvajinīm adorned with flags and banners, ramyām beautiful, tūryōdghuṣṭanināditām resounding with the sounds of trumpets, siktarājapathām royal highways sprinkled with water, prakīrṇakusumōtkarāmam with flowers strewn, rājapravēśasumukhai: delighted with the king's entry, maṅgalavādibhi: making auspicious sounds with instruments, paurai: by citizens, sampūrṇām filled with, janaughai: by groups of people, samalaṅkṛtām well decorated, purīm city, āśu speedily, jagāma went.

Thereafter, king Dasaratha directed his army to proceed speedily in advance. When he reached the city of Ayodhya it looked well-decorated with flags and banners. It resounded with trumpets. The royal highways were sprinkiled with water and strewn with flowers. It was filled with groups of people. Awaiting with delight the arrival of the king the citizens produced merry sounds with musical instruments.
paurai: pratyudgatō dūraṅ dvijaiśca puravāsibhi:.

putrairanugata śśrīmān śrīmadbhiśca mahāyaśā: ৷৷1.77.9৷৷

pravivēśa gṛhaṅ rājā himavatsadṛśaṅ punaḥ.


paurai: by the citizens, puravāsibhi: living in the city, dvijai: ca by brahmins also, dūram from a long distance, pratyudgata: welcomed by walking towards him, śrīmadbhi: by the graceful, putrai: sons, anugata: followed by, śrīmān elegant, mahāyaśā: possessing high fame, rājā king, puna: again, himavatsadṛśam resembling Himavat, gṛham residence, pravivēśa entered.

Prosperous king Dasaratha of great fame followed by his elegant sons entered the city of Ayodhya while the citizens and brahmins came forward from a long distance to welcome him who re-entered his palace looking like the Himalayan moutain.
nananda sajanō rājā gṛhē kāmai ssupūjita:৷৷1.77.10৷৷

kausalyā ca sumitrā ca kaikēyī ca sumadhyamā.

vadhūpratigrahē yuktā yāścānyā rājayōṣita:৷৷1.77.11৷৷


rājā king, gṛhē in the residence, kāmai: with objects of enjoyment, supūjitaḥ well honoured, sajana: with his relations and family members, nananda rejoiced, kausalyā ca Kausalya, sumitrā ca Sumitra, sumadhyamā slender waisted, kaikēyī ca Kaikeyi, yā: hyanyā: others, rājayōṣitaḥ women of royal family, vadhūpratigrahē in receiving the new brides, yuktā: engaged.

The king and his kith and kin were received with honour in a pleasing manner. Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi of slender waist and other women attending on the king were busy in receiving the new brides.
tatassītāṅ mahābhāgāmūrmilāṅ ca yaśasvinīm.

kuśadhvajasutē cōbhē jagṛhurnṛpapatnaya:৷৷1.77.12৷৷


tata: thereafter, nṛpapatnaya: king's wives, mahābhāgām highly fortunate, sītām Sita, yaśasvinīm having fame, ūrmilāṅ ca Urmila, ubhē both, kuśadhvajasutē daughters of Kusadhwaja, jagṛhu: received.

Thereafter the queens received the highly fortunate Sita, Urmila of high fame and both the daughters of Kusadhwaja, Mandavi and Srutakirti.
maṅgalālambhanaiścāpi śōbhitā: kṣaumavāsasa:.

dēvatāyatanānyāśu sarvāstā: pratyapūjayan৷৷1.77.13৷৷


tā: sarvā: all of them, maṅgalālambhanaiścāpi holding auspicious substances, śōbhitā: shining, kṣaumavāsasa: attired in silken apparels, āśu immediately, dēvatāyatanāni temples, pratyapūjayan worshipped.

With auspicious aricles in their hands, all the new brides who shone in silken apparels
immediately went to temples and worshipped the family deities.
abhivādyābhivādyāṅśca sarvā rājasutāstadā.

svaṅ svaṅ gṛhamathāsādya kubērabhavanōpamam৷৷1.77.14৷৷

gōbhirdhanaiśca dhānyaiśca tarpayitvā dvijōttamān.

rēmirē muditā: sarvā bhartṛbhi: sahitā raha:৷৷1.77.15৷৷


tadā then, sarvā: all of them, rājasutā: princesses, abhivādyān worthy of homage, abhivādya having paid obeisance, atha thereafter, kubērabhavanōpamam resembling the palace of Kubera, svaṅ svam their own, gṛham residence, āsādya having reached, gōbhi: with cows, dhanaiśca with riches, dhānyaiśca with corn, dvijōttamān brahmins, tarpayitvā (arcayitvā) having worshipped, raha: in private, bhartṛbhi: with husbands, sahitā: united with, muditā: well pleased, rēmirē enjoyed.

Then all the princesses paid obeisance to those worthy of worship and entered their residence that resembled the palace of Kubera.Thereafter pleased with gifting cows, riches and corn to brahmins and satisfying them they joined their husbands and enjoyed themselves in privacy
kumārāśca mahātmānō vīryēṇāpratimā bhuvi .

kṛtadārā: kṛtāstrāśca sadhanā: sasuhṛjjanā:৷৷1.77.16৷৷

śuśrūṣamāṇā: pitaraṅ vartayanti nararṣabhā:.


mahātmāna: magnanimous, vīryēṇa in prowess, bhuvi on this earth, apratimā: incomparable, kṛtadārā: having got married, kṛtāstrāśca competent in the use of weapons, sadhanā: endowed with wealth, sasuhṛjjanā: together with friends, nararṣabhā: excellent among men, kumārā: sons, pitaram father, śuśrūṣamāṇā: serving, vartayanti were moving on their way.

All the princes who were best of men, great souls, incomparable in prowess on earth, capable of the use of weapons and endowed with wealth moved about with friends, serving their father and following his commands.
kasyacittvatha kālasya rājā daśaratha: sutam.1.77.17৷৷

bharataṅ kaikayīputra mabravīdraghunandana:.


atha thereafter, kasyacitkālasya after some time, raghunandanaḥ delight of Raghu race, rājā daśaratha: king Dasaratha, kaikayīputram son of Kaikeyi, sutam son, bharatam addressing Bharata, abravīt spoke.

After some time king Dasaratha the delight of the Raghu race addressed his son Bharata:
ayaṅ kēkayarājasya putrō vasati putraka৷৷1.77.18৷৷

tvāṅ nētumāgatō vīra yudhājinmātulastava.


putraka O! Child, tvām you, nētum to take, āgata: has come, kēkayarājasya Kekaya king's, putra: son, vīra: heroic one, tava your, mātula: metarnal uncle, ayam this, yudhājit Yudhajit, vasati is here.

"The heroic Yudhajit son of the king of Kekaya, your maternal uncle, has come here and wishes to take you with him, O Child!
prārthitastēna dharmajña midhilāyāmahaṅ tathā৷৷1.77.19৷৷

ṛṣimadhyē tu tasya tvaṅ prītiṅ kartumihārhasi.


dharmajña O! Knower of duties, aham I, tēna by him, midhilāyām in Mithila, ṛṣimadhyē in the midst of sages, tathā in that way, prārthita: have been requested, tvam you, tasya for him, prītim delight, kartum to cause, arhasi behoves of you.

O Knower of dharma this was his request to me in Mithila in the midst of sages. You should bring him delight (by obliging him).
śrutvā daśarathasyaitadbharata: kaikayīsuta:৷৷1.77.20৷৷

abhivādya guruṅ rāmaṅ pariṣvajya ca lakṣmaṇam.

gamanāyābhicakrāma śatrughnasahitastadā৷৷1.77.21৷৷


kaikayīsuta: son of Kaikeyi, bharata: Bharata, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, ētat this, śrutvā having heard, gurum father, rāmam Rama, abhivādya having paid obeisance, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, pariṣvajya embracing, tadā then, śatrughnasahita: together with Satrughna, gamanāya to depart, abhicakrāma started.

Having heard the words of Dasaratha, Bharata, son of Kaikeyi paid obeisance to his father and Rama, embraced Lakshmana and prepared for the journey with Satrughna.
āpṛcchya pitaraṅ śūrō rāmaṅ cākliṣṭakāriṇam.

mātṛścāpi naraśrēṣṭha śśatrughnasahitō yayau৷৷1.77.22৷৷


śūra: valiant, naraśrēṣṭha: excellent among men, Bharata, pitaram father, akliṣṭakāriṇam doer of acts without fatigue, rāmam Rama, mātṛścāpi mothers also, āpṛcchya having asked (their leave), śatrughnasahita: together with Satrughna, yayau departed.

Valiant Bharata, the best of men took leave of his father Dasaratha, a tireless brother Rama and mothers and departed with Satrughna.
gatē tu bharatē rāmō lakṣmaṇaśca mahābala:.

pitaraṅ dēvasaṅṅkāśaṅ pūjayāmāsatustadā৷৷1.77.23৷৷


tadā then, bharatē when Bharata, gatē had departed, rāma: Rama, mahābala: mighty one, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also, dēvasaṅṅkāśam resembling god, pitaram father, pūjayāmāsatu: both of them served.

After the departure of Bharata, mighty Rama and Lakshmana continued to serve their god-like father.
piturājñāṅ puraskṛtya paurakāryāṇi sarvaśa:.

cakāra rāmō dharmātmā priyāṇi ca hitāni ca৷৷1.77.24৷৷


dharmātmā Illustrious, rāma: Rama, pitu: father's, ājñām command, puraskṛtya treating with respect, priyāṇi pleasing, hitāni ca of well-being welfare, paurakāryāṇi the duties towards citizens, sarvaśa: all ones, cakāra made.

Righteous Rama discharged his duties towards the citizens for their all-round comfort and welfare giving top psriority to (the execution of) the command of his father.
mātṛbhyō mātṛkāryāṇi kṛtvā paramayantrita:.

gurūṇāṅ gurukāryāṇi kālē kālē.nvavaikṣata৷৷1.77.25৷৷


paramayantrita: highly cotrolled and disciplined to his duties, mātṛbhya: for his mothers, mātṛkāryāṇi duties towards his mothers, kṛtvā having done, gurūṇām for adorable ones, gurukāryāṇi duties towards Spiritual preceptors, kālē kālē at approprtiate times, anvavaikṣata supervised.

With unfailing regularity Rama carried out his duties towards his mothers, and his elders, looking into them from time to time.
ēvaṅ daśaratha: prītō brāhmaṇā naigamāstathā.

rāmasya śīlavṛttēna sarvē viṣayavāsina:৷৷1.77.26৷৷


ēvam in this way, rāmasya Rama's, śīlavṛttēna with good conduct and character, daśaratha: Dasaratha, prīta: pleased, brāhmaṇā: brahmanas, tathā also, naigamā: inhabitants of the city, sarvē all, viṣayavāsina: the people of the country.

Dasaratha was pleased with the good conduct and character of Rama. Brahmanas as also the inhabitants of the city and the people of the country at large were happy with him.
tēṣāmatiyaśā lōkē rāma ssatyaparākramaḥ.

svayambhūriva bhūtānāṅ babhūva guṇavattara:৷৷1.77.27৷৷


lōkē in this world, atiyaśā: possessing great fame, satyaparākrama: truthful and full of prowess, guṇavattara: possessing many greater virtues, rāma: Rama, tēṣām for the people of that kingdom, bhūtānām for beings, svayambhū: iva like Brahma, babhūva became.

In world the glorious and virtuous Rama armed with the power of truthfulness became the protector of the people like Brahma (to living beings).
rāmastu sītayā sārdhaṅ vijahāra bahūnṛtūn .

manassvī tadgatastasyāḥ nityaṅ hṛdi samarpita:৷৷1.77.28৷৷


manasvī the sensitive one, rāmastu Rama, tadgata: fixing his mind on Sita, tasyā: her, hṛdi heart, nityam always, samarpita: dedicating, sītayā sārdham with Sita, bahūn many, ṛtūn seasons, vijahāra went.

With his heart fixed on Sita to whom he was always devoted, Rama, the wise went about enjoying with her (the beauty of) all the seasons.
priyā tu sītā rāmasya dārā: pitṛkṛtā iti.

guṇādrūpaguṇāccāpi prītirbhūyō.bhyavardhata৷৷1.77.29৷৷


sītā Sita, pitṛkṛtā by his father, dārā iti as wife, rāmasya Rama's, priyā became beloved, guṇāt because of virtues, rūpaguṇāccāpi by virtue of beauty as well, prīti: affection, bhūya: again, abhyavardhata developed.

Chosen by his father Sita became Rama's beloved wife with her virtue and beauty his affection for her grew further.
tasyāśca bhartā dviguṇaṅ hṛdayē parivartatē.

antarjātamapi vyaktamākhyāti hṛdayaṅ hṛdā৷৷1.77.30৷৷


bhartā her husband Rama, tasyā: her, hṛdayē heart, dviguṇam twice, parivartatē revolving, hṛdayam in heart, antarjātam api every thought born inside also, hṛdā with heart, vyaktam clearly, ākhyāti he will communicate.

For sita her husband was doubly dear. They were clearly communicating through each other's heart every thought generated in the mind.
tasya bhūyō viśēṣēṇa maithilī janakātmajā.

dēvatābhi ssamā rūpē sītā śrīriva rūpiṇī৷৷1.77.31৷৷


rūpē in beauty, dēvatābhi: with devatas, samā equal, rūpiṇī (Sita) assuming the human form, śrīriva like Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, rūpiṇī embodiment, maithilī born in the city of Mithila, janakātmajā daughter of Janaka, sītā Sita, bhūyō still, viśēṣēṇa especially, tasya in Rama's heart (parivartatē revolving).

Sita was an embodiment of Lakshmi (goddess of wealth). In beauty she was like a goddess. Born in the city of Mithila as daughter to Janaka, she was always especially dear to him.
tayā sa rājarṣisutō.bhirāmayā

samēyivānuttamarājakanyayā.

atīva rāma śśuśubhē.bhirāmayā.

vibhu śśriyā viṣṇurivāmarēśvara:৷৷1.77.32৷৷


rājarṣisuta: son of rishi among kings Dasaratha, sa: rāma: that Rama, abhirāmayā by the charming one, tayā by her, uttamarājakanyayā excellent king Janka's daughter, samēyivān united together, śriyā with Lakshmi, amarēśvara: vibhu: thaord of devatas, viṣṇu: iva like Visnu, (mudā anvita: possessing joy), (atīva) śuśubhē shone.

Rama, son of Rajarshi Dasaratha, united with the most charming princess, shone like Visnu, Lord of the gods in the company of Lakshmi.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē caturviṅśatsahasrikāyāṅ saṅhitāyāṅ bālakāṇḍē saptasaptatitamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the seventyseventh sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
