Sloka & Translation

[Dasaratha requests Vasistha and Vamadeva to make preparations for installation of Rama-- Orders for procurement of necessary materials--Sumantra brings Rama to the assembly--Dasaratha counsels Rama.]

tēṣāmañjalipadmāni pragṛhītāni sarvaśaḥ.

pratigṛhyābravīdrājā tēbhyaḥ priyahitaṅ vacaḥ৷৷2.3.1৷৷


rājā king, sarvaśaḥ in all ways, pragṛhītāni held out, tēṣām their, añjalipadmāni palms folded like lotuses, pratigṛhya having received, tēbhyaḥ for them, priyahitam pleasing and beneficial, vacaḥ words, abravīt spoke.

The citizens held out their palms folded like lotuses in reverence and urged king Dasaratha in all possible ways (to coronate Rama). He reciprocated their respect with words preasing and beneficial to them:
ahō.smi paramaprītaḥ prabhāvaścātulō mama.

yanmē jyēṣṭhaṅ priyaṅ putraṅ yauvarājyasthamicchatha৷৷2.3.2৷৷


mē my, jyēṣṭham eldest, priyam beloved, putram son, yauvarājyastham as prince regent, yat icchatha since you are desiring, ahō oh!, parama prīta: asmi I am immensely pleased, mama my, prabhāvaśca splendour, atulaḥ incomparable.

I am immensely happy that you have added to my incomparable resilience with your desire to see my beloved eldest son installed heir-apparent.
iti pratyarcya tānrājā brāhmaṇānidamabravīt.

vasiṣṭhaṅ vāmadēvaṅ ca tēṣāmēvōpaśṛṇvatām৷৷2.3.3৷৷


rājā the king, iti thus, tān them, pratyarcya having honoured, tēṣām their, upaśṛṇvatām ēva
when they were listening, vaśiṣṭham to Vasistha, vāmadēvaṅ ca to Vamadeva, brāhmaṇān addressing other brahmins, idam these words, abravīt spoke.

Having honoured them (the invitees) in return for their response, king Dasaratha addressed Vasistha, Vamadeva and other brahmins.
caitraśśrīmānayaṅ māsaḥ puṇyaḥ puṣpitakānanaḥ.

yauvarājyāya rāmasya sarvamēvōpakalpyatām৷৷2.3.4৷৷

rājñastūparatē vākyē janaghōṣō mahānabhūt.


śrīmān auspicious, ayam this, caitramāsaḥ month of Chaitra, puṇyaḥ is sacred, puṣpitakānanaḥ with its groves in blossoms, rāmasya of Rama, yauvarājyāya for installation as heir-apparent, sarvam ēva everything, upakalpyatām be arranged, rājñaḥ king's, vākyē words, uparatē were, mahān great, janaghōṣaḥ applause by the multitude, abhūt arose.

This auspicious month of Chaitra is sacred with its blossoming groves. Let all the arrangements be made for the installation of Rama as heir-apparent. On hearing this, all the members of the assembly applauded the king tumultously.
śanaistasminpraśāntē ca janaghōṣē janādhipaḥ৷৷2.3.5৷৷

vasiṣṭhaṅ muniśārdūlaṅ rājā vacanamabravīt.


tasmin that, janaghōṣē tumult, śanaiḥ slowly, praśāntē had calmed down, janādhipaḥ lord of the people, rājā king (Dasaratha), muniśārdūlam tiger among ascetics, vaśiṣṭham to Vasistha, vacanam these words, abravīt spoke.

With the tumult gradually calmed down, the lord of the people, the king (Dasaratha) spoke this to Vasistha, a tiger among ascetics:
abhiṣēkāya rāmasya yatkarma saparicchadam৷৷2.3.6৷৷

tadadya bhagavan sarvamājñāpayitu marhasi.


bhagavan O revered one!, rāmasya Rama's, abhiṣēkāya for the installation, saparicchadam with necessaries, yat which, karma performance , tat (sarvaṅ) that, adya now, ājñāpayitum to issue order, arhasi should.

O revered one!, you should issue appropriate orders to keep ready the necessary articles required for the performance of installation ceremony of Rama.
tacchrutvā bhūmipālasya vasiṣṭhō dvijasattamaḥ৷৷2.3.7৷৷

ādidēśāgratō rājña ssthitānyuktān kṛtāñjalīn.


dvijasattama: the best of brahmins, vaśiṣṭha: Vasistha, bhūmipālasya king's, tat those words, śrutvā having heard, rājña: king's, agrata: in front of, sthitān standing, kṛtāñjalīn with folded palms, yuktān counsellors, ādidēśa ordered.

Hearing the words of the king, Vasistha, best of the brahmins thus ordered the counsellors who stood in front of the king with folded palms:
suvarṇādīni ratnāni balīn sarvauṣadhīrapi৷৷2.3.8৷৷

śuklamālyāṅśca lājāṅśca pṛthakca madhusarpiṣī.

ahatāni ca vāsāṅsi rathaṅ sarvāyudhānyapi৷৷2.3.9৷৷

caturaṅgabalaṅ caiva gajaṅ ca śubhalakṣaṇam.

cāmaravyajanē śvētē dhvajaṅ chatraṅ ca pāṇḍuram৷৷2.3.10৷৷

śataṅ ca śātakumbhānāṅ kumbhānāgnivarcasām.

hiraṇyaśṛṅgamṛṣabhaṅ samagraṅ vyāghracarma ca৷৷2.3.11৷৷

upasthāpayata prātaragnyagāraṅ mahīpatēḥ.


suvarṇādīni gold and other metals, ratnāni gems, balīn offerings, sarvauṣadhīḥ api herbs also, śuklamālyān ca garlands of white flowers, lājān ca roasted corn, pṛthak separately, madhusarpiṣī honey and clarified butter, ahatāni vāsāṅsi ca fresh clothes, ratham chariot, sarvāyudhānyapi weapons of every kind, caturaṅgabalaṅ caiva army of four divisions also, śubhalakṣaṇam possessing auspicious qualities, gajaṅ ca elephant, śvētē white, cāmaravyajanē fans made of Yak's hair, dhvajam a standard, pāṇḍuram white, chatraṅ ca parasol, śātakumbhānām golden, agnivarcasām shining like fire, kumbhānām of vessels, śataṅ ca a hundred, hiraṇyaśṛṅgam gold-plated horns, ṛṣabham a bull, samagram complete, vyāghracarma ca tiger skin, prātaḥ early morning, mahīpatēḥ king's, agnyagārē in the place set aside for sacred fire, upasthāpayata assemble.

By tomorrow early morning arrange in the place set aside for sacred fire in the king's palace gold and other metals, gems, articles of worship, also herbs, garlands
of white flowers, roasted corn, honey and clarified butter in separate containers, fresh clothes, chariot, weapons of every kind, army of four divisions, an elephant possessing auspicious marks, white fans made of Yak's hair, a standard, white parasol, a hundred golden vessels shining like fire, a bull with gold-plated horns and a tiger skin.
yaccānyatkiñcidēṣṭavyaṅ tatsarvamupakalpyatām৷৷2.3.12৷৷

antaḥpurasya dvārāṇi sarvasya nagarasya ca.

candanasragbhirarcyantāṅ dhūpaiśca ghrāṇahāribhiḥ৷৷2.3.13৷৷


anyat any other, yat ca kiñcit even a little, ēṣṭavyam sought, tat sarvam all that, upakalpyatām may be arranged, antaḥpurasya for the inner apartment, sarvasya entire, nagarasya ca also of the city, dvārāṇi gates, candanasragbhi: with sandalpaste and garlands, ghrāṇahāribhiḥ sweet-smelling, dhūpaiḥ with burnt incense, arcyantām worship.

Even the smallest items required be arranged. Let the gates of the inner apartment and of the entire city be decorated with sandalpaste and garlands. Let fragrant incense be burnt for worship.
praśastamannaṅ guṇavaddadhikṣīrōpasēcanam.

dvijānāṅ śatasāhasrē yatprakāmamalaṅ bhavēt৷৷2.3.14৷৷


yat which, dvijānām for brahmins, śatasāhasrē hundred thousand, prakāmam to the heart's content, alaṅ bhavēt is sufficient, guṇavat of good quality, dadhikṣīrōpasēcanam cooked with milk and curd, praśastam excellent, annam rice (be arranged).

Arrange fine rice cooked with milk and curd sufficient for a hundred thousand brahmins to eat to their heart's content.
satkṛtya dvijamukhyānāṅ śvaḥprabhātē pradīyatām.

ghṛtaṅ dadhi ca lājāśca dakṣiṇāścāpi puṣkalāḥ৷৷2.3.15৷৷


śvaḥ tomorrow, prabhātē early morning, dvijamukhyānām to the best of brahmins, satkṛtya having honoured them, pradīyatām give, ghṛtam clarified butter, dadhi ca curd also, lājāḥ ca roasted corn, puṣkalāḥ in abundance, dakṣiṇāścāpi also gifts (be given).

At dawn tomorrow the best of brahmins be honoured with cooked rice clarified butter, curd, roasted corn and gifts in abundance.
sūryē.bhyuditamātrē śvō bhavitā svastivācanam.

brāhmaṇāśca nimantryantāṅ kalpyantāmāsanāni ca৷৷2.3.16৷৷


śvaḥ tomorrow, sūryē when the Sun, abhyuditamātrē as soon as he rises, svastivācanam swastivachana (a benedictory utterance), bhavitā should be made, brāhmaṇāḥ ca brahmins, nimantryantām be invited, āsanāni ca seats also, kalpyantām be arranged.

As soon as the Sun rises tomorrow, arrangements be made for Swastivachana (a benedictory utterance). Brahmins be invited and seats provided to them.
ābadhyantāṅ patākāśca rājamārgaśca siṅcyatām.

sarvē ca tālāvacarā gaṇikāśca svalaṅkṛtāḥ৷৷2.3.17৷৷

kakṣyāṅ dvitīyāmāsādya tiṣṭhantu nṛpavēśmanaḥ.


patākāḥ ca banners, ābadhyantām be fastened, rājamārgaḥ ca royal highway, siṅcyatāṅ ca be sprinkled with water, sarvē all, tālāvacarāḥ actors, svalaṅkṛtāḥ beautifully adorned, gaṇikāḥ ca courtesans, nṛpavēśmanaḥ of the king's residence, dvitīyām second, kakṣyām the inner apartment, āsādya having reached, tiṣṭhantu remain seated.

Banners be fastened and royal highways be sprinkled with water. All actors and beautifully adorned courtesans should reach the second inner apartment of the king's residence and remain seated there.
dēvāyatanacaityēṣusānnabhakṣā ssadakṣiṇāḥ৷৷2.3.18৷৷

upasthāpayitavyā ssyurmālyayōgyāḥ pṛthakpṛthak.


sānnabhakṣāḥ provided with food and other eatables, sadakṣiṇāḥ together with gifts, mālyayōgyāḥ suitable persons to hold garlands, pṛthak pṛthak separately, dēvāyatanacaityēṣu in the temples and other places of worship, upasthāpayitavyāḥ syuḥ are to be stationed.

Persons to cater food and other eatables and to hold garlands and gifts be stationed at all temples and other places of worship.
dīrghāsibaddhā yōdhāśca sannaddhā mṛṣṭavāsasaḥ৷৷2.3.19৷৷

mahārājāṅgaṇaṅ sarvē praviśantu mahōdayam.


dīrghāsibaddhāḥ men with long swords tied to their waists, sannaddhāḥ fully alert, mṛṣṭavāsasaḥ wearing new clothes, sarvē all, yōdhāḥ ca warriors also, mahōdayam highly glorious, mahārājāṅgaṇam courtyard of the king, praviśantu let them enter.

Let all the warriors in fresh clothes, armed with long swords and fully alert enter the courtyard of the glorious king.
ēvaṅ vyādiśya viprau tau kriyāstatra suniṣṭhitau৷৷2.3.20৷৷

cakratuścaiva yacchēṣaṅ pārthivāya nivēdya ca.


suniṣṭhitau highly self-disciplined, tau viprau the two brahmins, tatra there, ēvam kriyāḥ functions to be performed, vyādiśya having ordered, pārthivāya to the king, nivēdya ca having informed, yat whatever, śēṣam remained to be done, that one also, cakratuḥ ca ēva also performed.

The two highly self-disciplined ascetics (Vasistha and Vamadeva), having ordered the tasks to be performed and whatever remained to be done reported to the king.
kṛtamityēva cābrūtāṅ abhigamya jagatpatim৷৷2.3.21৷৷

yathōktavacanaṅ prītau harṣayuktau dvijarṣabhau.


prītau being satisfied, harṣayuktau with delight, dvijarṣabhau the two illustrious brahmins, jagatpatim lord of the earth, abhigamya having approached, yathōktavacanam in accordance with the word of command, kṛtamityēva has been performed, abrūtām spoke.

Satisfied with the arrangements, the two illustrious brahmins(Vasistha and Vamadeva) approached the lord of the earth (Dasaratha) with delight and said All things have been arranged in accordance with your word of command.
tatassumantraṅ dyutimānrājā vacanamabravīt.

rāmaḥ kṛtātmā bhavatā śīghramānīyatāmiti৷৷2.3.22৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, dyutimān effulgent, rājā king, sumantram to Sumantra, kṛtātmā self-possessed, rāmaḥ Rama, bhavatā by you, śīghram immediately, ānīyatām be brought, iti thus, vacanam word, abravīt spoke.

Thereafter the glorious king said to Sumantra, Bring immediately the self-possessed Rama.
sa tathēti pratijñāya sumantrō rājaśāsanāt৷৷2.3.23৷৷

rāmaṅ tatrānayāñcakrē rathēna rathināṅ varam.


saḥ that, sumantraḥ Sumantra, tathā iti so be it, pratijñāya after acknowledging, rājaśāsanāt by the king's command, rathinām among charioteers, varam excellent, rāmam Rama, rathēna on chariot, tatra there, ānayāñcakrē brought.

In response to the king's command Sumantra, the best of charioteers said, 'so be it' and fetched Rama in a chariot.
atha tatra samāsīnā stadā daśarathaṅ nṛpam৷৷2.3.24৷৷

prācyōdīcyāḥ pratīcyāśca dākṣiṇātyāśca bhūmipāḥ.

mlēcchāścāryāśca yē cānyē vanaśailāntavāsinaḥ৷৷2.3.25৷৷

upāsāñcakrirē sarvē taṅ dēvā iva vāsavam.


atha afterwards, prācyōdīcyāḥ relating to eastern and northern countries, pratīcyāḥ ca relating to west, dākṣiṇātyāḥ ca relating to south, bhūmipāḥ kings, mlēcchāḥ ca foreign (non-aryan), āryāḥ ca Aryan, vanē in forest, anyē other, yē whosoever, śailāntavāsinaḥ inhabiting the mountains, sarvē all, tadā then, tatra there, samāsīnāḥ had seated, tam daśarathaṅ nṛpam that king Dasaratha, dēvāḥ devatas, vāsavamiva like Indra, upāsāñcakrirē paid homage.

After Sumantra had gone, the kings from eastern, northern, western, southern non-Aryan and Aryan countries, rulers from forests and mountains paid homage to king Dasaratha, as devatas do to Indra.
tēṣāṅ madhyē sa rājarṣirmarutāmiva vāsavaḥ৷৷2.3.26৷৷

prāsādasthō rathagataṅ dadarśāyāntamātmajam.


marutām among maruts, vāsavaḥ like Indra, tēṣām their, madhyē in the midst, saḥ that, rājarṣiḥ sage among kings (Dasaratha), prāsādasthaḥ sitting in the palace, rathagatam sitting in the chariot, āyāntam approaching, ātmajam son, dadarśa beheld.

The rajarsi, (Dasaratha), seated among the kings like Indra amidst maruts, beheld his son Rama sitting in a chariot and approaching him.
gandharvarājapratimaṅ lōkē vikhyātapauruṣam৷৷2.3.27৷৷

dīrghabāhuṅ mahāsattvaṅ mattamātaṅgagāminam.

candrakāntānanaṅ rāmamatīva priyadarśanam৷৷2.3.28৷৷

rūpaudāryaguṇaiḥ puṅsāṅ dṛṣṭicittāpahāriṇam.

gharmābhitaptāḥ parjanyaṅ hlādayantamiva prajāḥ৷৷2.3.29৷৷

na tatarpa samāyāntaṅ paśyamānō narādhipaḥ.


gandharvarājapratimam appearing like the very image of the king of gandharvas, lōkē in this world, vikhyātapauruṣam renowned for his courage, dīrghabāhum long-armed, mahāsattvam of immense strength, mattamātaṅgagāminam walks with the majestic gait of an intoxicated elephant, candrakāntānanam with countenance resembling the Moonstone, atīva extremely, priyadarśanam handsome to look at, rūpaudāryaguṇaiḥ with his beauty and generosity, puṅsām of men, dṛṣṭicittāpahāriṇam captivating their eyes and mind, gharmābhitaptāḥ scorched with heat, prajāḥ men, hlādayantam gladdening, parjanyam iva like Parjanya(rain-god), samāyāntam approaching, rāmam Rama, paśyamānaḥ while gazing, narādhipaḥ king, na tatarpa was not satiated.

Rama appeared as the very image of king of the gandharvas known for his courage in this world. With his long arms, he was extremely handsome with a countenance of the colour of moonstone possessed of immense strength, he walked with the gait of an intoxicated elephant. He captivated the eyes and hearts of men with his beauty and generosity. He looked like Parjanya (rain-god), gladdening men scorched by heat. Even after (intensely) gazing at Rama approaching, the king (Dasaratha) was not satiated.
avatārya sumantrastaṅ rāghavaṅ syandanōttamāt৷৷2.3.30৷৷

pitussamīpaṅ gacchantaṅ prāñjaliḥ pṛṣṭhatō.nvagāt.


sumantraḥ Sumantra, tam rāghavam that Rama, syandanōttamāt from that splendid chariot, avatārya having assisted him to alight, pituḥ to father's, samīpam proximity, gacchantam proceeding,
prāñjali: with folded palms, pṛṣṭhataḥ behind, anvagāt followed.

Sumantra assisted Rama while alighting from that splendid chariot and followed him with folded palms as Rama was proceeding towards his father.
sa taṅ kailāsaśṛṅgābhaṅ prāsādaṅ narapuṅgavaḥ৷৷2.3.31৷৷

ārurōha nṛpaṅ draṣṭuṅ saha sūtēna rāghavaḥ.


narapuṅgavaḥ best among men, saḥ that, rāghavaḥ Rama, nṛpam the king, draṣṭum to see, sūtēna saha accompanied by charioteer Sumantra, kailāsaśṛṅgābham as lofty as the peak of Kailasa, tam
prāsādam that palace, ārurōha ascended.

Best among men, Rama accompanied by charioteer Sumantra ascended that palace that was lofty as the peak of Kailasa mountain in order to see the king.
sa prāñjalirabhiprētya praṇataḥ piturantikē৷৷2.3.32৷৷

nāma svaṅ śrāvayanrāmō vavandē caraṇau pituḥ.


saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, abhiprētya having approached, pituḥ father's, antikē in proximity, praṇataḥ bowing low, svam his own, nāma name, śrāvayan pronouncing, pituḥ father's, caraṇau feet, vavandē touched with reverence.

Rama, approached his father with folded palms and bowed low near him, pronounced his (own) name and touched his father's feet with reverence.
taṅ dṛṣṭvā praṇataṅ pārśvē kṛtāñjalipuṭaṅ nṛpaḥ৷৷2.3.33৷৷

gṛhyāñjalau samākṛṣya sasvajē priyamātmajam.


nṛpaḥ that king, pārśvē by his side, praṇatam bowed down with reverence, kṛtāñjalipuṭam with folded hands, priyam beloved, tam ātmajam his son Rama, añjalau by holding the folded hands, gṛhya clasping, samākṛṣya drawing towards him, sasvajē embraced.

Seeing his beloved son Rama who was standing by his side with folded hands in supplication, king Dasaratha, held his folded hands and drew him near and embraced him.
tasmai cābhyuditaṅ divyaṅ maṇikāñcanabhūṣitam৷৷2.3.34৷৷

didēśa rājā ruciraṅ rāmāya paramāsanam.


rājā the king (Dasaratha), tasmai rāmāya for that Rama, abhyuditam lofty, divyam excellent, maṇikāñcanabhūṣitam decorated with gold and gems, ruciram splendid, varamāsanam best seat, didēśa gave.

The king (Dasaratha) offered Rama a seat on the lofty, glorious throne splendidly decorated with gold and gems.
tadāsanavaraṅ prāpya vyadīpayata rāghavaḥ৷৷2.3.35৷৷

svayaiva prabhayā mērumudayē vimalō raviḥ.


rāghavaḥ son of the Raghus (Rama), tat āsanavaram that lofty seat, prāpya having received, udayē in the morning, vimalaḥ translucent, raviḥ sun, mērumiva like Meru (mountain), svayā of his own, prabhayā with his rays, vyadīpayata shone.

The lofty seat Rama occupied was illuminated by him resplenderce like mount Meru in the translucent rays of the morning Sun.
tēna vibhrājatā tatra sā sabhā.bhivyarōcata৷৷2.3.36৷৷

vimalagrahanakṣatrā śāradī dyaurivēndunā.


tatra there, vibhrājatā while illumining, tēna by Rama, sā sabhā that assembly, vimalagrahanakṣatrā with clear planets and stars, śāradī autumnal, dyauḥ sky, indunā iva like moon, abhivyarōcata dazzled.

That assembly was illumined by (the presence of) Rama like the Moon dazzling the
clear autumnal sky bespangled with sparkling planets and stars.
taṅ paśyamānō nṛpatistutōṣa priyamātmajam৷৷2.3.37৷৷

alaṅkṛtamivātmānamādarśatalasaṅsthitam.


tam that, priyam beloved, ātmajam son, paśyamānaḥ beholding, nṛpatiḥ king, alaṅkṛtam adorned, ādarśatalasaṅsthitam image reflected in mirror, ātmānamiva seeing himself, tutōṣa experienced delight.

The king was delighted to see his beloved son as though he saw his own reflection adorning a mirror.
sa taṅ sasmitamābhāṣya putraṅ putravatāṅ varaḥ৷৷2.3.38৷৷

uvācēdaṅ vacō rājā dēvēndramiva kāśyapaḥ.


putrāvatām among those having sons, varaḥ best, saḥ rājā that king, taṅ putram that son, sasmitam with a smile, ābhāṣya having called, kāśyapaḥ Kasyapa, dēvēndramiva like Devendra, idam this, vacaḥ words, uvāca spoke.

The best among fathers, he (Dasaratha) said these words to his son with a smile, like Kasyapa addressing Devendra.
jyēṣṭhāyāmasi mē patnyāṅ sadṛśyāṅ sadṛśassutaḥ৷৷2.3.39৷৷

utpannastvaṅ guṇaśrēṣṭhō mama rāmātmajaḥ priyaḥ.


rāma O Rama!, jyēṣṭhāyām the eldest, sadṛśyām worthy woman, mē patnyām to my wife, utpannaḥ born, sadṛśaḥ worthy, sutaḥ asi are a son, guṇaśrēṣṭhaḥ having excellent virtues, tvam you, mama to me, priyaḥ ātmajaḥ beloved son.

A worthy son of my worthy eldest wife, O Rama!, your great virtues have endeared you to me.
yatastvayā prajāścēmā ssvaguṇairanurañjitāḥ৷৷2.3.40৷৷

tasmāttvaṅ puṣyayōgēna yauvarājyamavāpnuhi.


yataḥ since, tvayā by you, imāḥ these, prajāḥ people, svaguṇaiḥ with your virtues, anurañjitāḥ have been endeared, tasmāt therefore, tvam you, puṣyayōgēna when Pushya star is in conjunction with the Moon, yauvarājyam office of heir-apparent, avāpnuhi receive.

As you have endeared yourself to these subjects with your virtues, you shall assume the office of heir-apparent when Pushya star is in conjunction with the Moon.
kāmatastvaṅ prakṛtyaiva vinītō guṇavānasi৷৷2.3.41৷৷

guṇavatyapi tu snēhātputra vakṣyāmi tē hitam.


tvam you, kāmataḥ admittedly, prakṛtyaiva by nature itself, vinītaḥ gentle one, guṇavān asi are virtuous, putra O son!, guṇavatyapi tu (in you) even though possessed of virtues, snēhāt out of affection, tē you!, hitam good, vakṣyāmi I shall speak.

Admittedly gentle by nature, you are gifted with virtues. O son!, even though virtuous, I shall offer you counsel for your good out of affection for you.
bhūyō vinayamāsthāya bhava nityaṅ jitēndriyaḥ৷৷2.3.42৷৷

kāmakrōdhasamutthāni tyajēthā vyasanāni ca.


bhūyaḥ still, vinayam modesty, āsthāya resorting to, nityam always, jitēndriya: conquering the senses, bhava become, kāmakrōdhasamutthāni arising out of lust and anger, vyasanāni ca tyajēthāḥ you should also abjure violations.

With humility, always keep your senses under control. Keep off all violations arising out of lust and anger.
parōkṣayā vartamānō vṛttyā pratyakṣayā tathā৷৷2.3.43৷৷

amātyaprabhṛtīssarvāḥprakṛtīścānurañjaya.


parōkṣayā indirectly, vṛttyā with behaviour, tathā also, pratyakṣayā with direct behaviour, vartamānaḥ conducting, amātyaprabhṛtīḥ ministers etc., sarvāḥ all, prakṛtīḥ people, anurañjaya satisfy.

With your behaviour keep the ministers and the people satisfied by means direct or indirect.
kōṣṭhāgārāyudhāgāraiḥkṛtvā sannicayānbahūn৷৷2.3.44৷৷

tuṣṭānuraktaprakṛtiryaḥ pālayati mēdinīm.

tasyanandanti mitrāṇi labdhvā.mṛtamivāmarāḥ৷৷2.3.45৷৷

tasmāttvamapi cātmānaṅ niyamyaivaṅ samācara.


kōṣṭhāgārāyudhāgāraiḥ with stocks of foodgrains and arsenals, bahūn many, sannicayān collections, kṛtvā having made, tuṣṭānurakta: prakṛti: keeping the subjects content and loyal, yaḥ who, mēdinīm the earth, pālayati rules, tasya his, mitrāṇi friends, amṛtam nectar, labdhvā having obtained, amarāḥ iva like devatas, nandanti obtain pleasure, tasmāt so, tvamapi you also, ātmānam yourself, ēvam thus, samācara conduct yourself.

You shall rule the earth by filling granaries of foodgrains and arsenals and keeping the subjects loyal and contented. The friends of such a person will memain pleased like devatas with nectar. Hence conduct yourself with your mind under control.
tacchrutvā suhṛdastasya rāmasya priyakāriṇaḥ৷৷2.3.46৷৷

tvaritā śśīghramabhyētya kauśalyāyai nyavēdayan.


tasya rāmasya that Rama's, suhṛdaḥ friends, tat śrutvā hearing that, tvaritāḥ in great haste, priyakāriṇaḥ with the intention of causing pleasure, śīghram speedily, abhyētya having approached, kauśalyāyai to Kausalya, nyavēdayan informed.

Having heard this, Rama's friends quickly reported the matter to Kausalya so that
she might be happy.
sā hiraṇyaṅ ca gāścaiva ratnāni vividhāni ca৷৷2.3.47৷৷

vyādidēśa priyākhyēbhyaḥ kauśalyā pramadōttamā.


pramadōttamā the foremost of women, sā kauśalyā that Kausalya, hiraṇyaṅ ca gold, gāḥ caiva and also cows, vividhāni various kinds of, ratnāni ca gems as well, priyākhyēbhyaḥ (saha) messengers of these good tidings, vyādidēśa ordered.

The foremost of women, Kausalya ordered gifts of gold, cows and various kinds of
gems to be given to the messengers who brought this good tiding.
athā.bhivādya rājānaṅ rathamāruhya rāghavaḥ৷৷2.3.48৷৷

yayau svaṅ dyutimadvēśma janaughaiḥ pratipūjitaḥ.


atha thereafter, rāghavaḥ son of the Raghus (Rama), rājānam king, abhivādya having paid obeisance, ratham chariot, āruhya ascending, janaughaiḥ by multitude of men, pratipūjitaḥ worshipped, dyutimat splendid, svaṅ vēśma towards his abode, yayau went.

Having paid his obeisance to the king, Rama ascended the chariot amidst the acclaim of multitudes of men and left for his splendid abode.
tē cāpi paurā nṛpatērvacasta-

cchṛtvā tathā lābhamivēṣṭamāśu.

narēndramāmantrya gṛhāṇi gatvā

dēvānsamānarcuratiprahṛṣṭāḥ৷৷2.3.49৷৷


tē paurāścāpi those citizens also, tathā such, iṣṭam dear, lābhamiva beneficial, nṛpatēḥ king's, tat vacaḥ that pronouncement, śṛtvā having heard, narēndram king Dasaratha, āmantrya having taken leave of, āśu immediately, gṛhāṇi to their homes, gatvā having gone, ati prahṛṣṭāḥ full
of joy, dēvān gods, samānarcuḥ worshipped.

On hearing such pronouncement by the king, the citizens also felt they have got something beneficial for themselves. They took leave of the king (Dasaratha) and hastening home, full of joy, began worshipping their gods.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē tṛtīyassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the third sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
