[Dasaratha sends Sumantra to bring Rama again-- briefs him on certain matters and sends him --- Rama visits Kausalya and informs her about the coronation and seeks her blessings.]

gatēṣvatha nṛpō bhūyaḥ paurēṣu saha mantribhiḥ.

mantrayitvā tataścakrē niścayajñassaniścayam৷৷2.4.1৷৷

śva ēva puṣyō bhavitāśvō.bhiṣēcyastu mē sutaḥ.

rāmō rājīvatāmrākṣō yauvarājya iti prabhuḥ৷৷2.4.2৷৷


atha thereafter, paurēṣu citizens, gatēṣu satsu had departed, niścayajñaḥ knows how to take decisions, prabhuḥ Lord, nṛpaḥ king, mantribhi: saha together with counsellors, bhūyaḥ again, mantrayitvā having consulted, śvaḥ ēva tomorrow itself, puṣyaḥ Pushya star, bhavitā is in the ascendance, rājīvatāmrākṣaḥ a man whose eyes resemble red lotus (petals), mē sutaḥ my son, rāmaḥ Rama, śvaḥ tomorrow, yauvarājyē as heir-apparent, abhiṣēcyaḥ should be installed, iti thus, niścayam decision, cakrē made.

After the citizens departed, the king, an expert in decision-making again consulted his counsellors and said, Tomorrow Pushya star is in the ascendence and my son, Rama (handsome) with copper-coloured eyes which resemble red lotus petals will be installed heir-apparent.

athā.ntargṛhamāviśya rājā daśarathastadā.

sūtamāmantrayāmāsa rāmaṅ punarihānaya৷৷2.4.3৷৷


atha thereafter, rājā daśarathaḥ king Dasaratha, antargṛham inner apartment, āviśya having entered, tadā then, rāmam Rama, punaḥ again, iha here, ānaya bring him, sūtam charioteer Sumantra, āmantrayāmāsa ordered.

Therafter king Dasaratha on retiring to his private apartment, ordered Sumantra to
bring Rama once again.
pratigṛhya sa tadvākyaṅ sūtaḥ punarupāyayau.

rāmasya bhavanaṅ śīghraṅ rāmamānayituṅ punaḥ৷৷2.4.4৷৷


saḥ sūtaḥ the charioteer, tat vākyam that order, pratigṛhya having received, punaḥ again, rāmam Rama, ānayitum to fetch, śīghram speedily, rāmasya Rama's, bhavanam palace, upāyayau reached.

In obedience to the command of the king charioteer Sumantra set out speedily to the palace of Rama to fetch him back once again.
dvārsthairāvēditaṅ tasya rāmāyā৷৷gamanaṅ punaḥ.

śrutvaiva cāpi rāmastaṅ prāptaṅ śaṅkānvitō.bhavat৷৷2.4.5৷৷


punaḥ again, tasya his, āgamanam arrival, dvāḥ sdhaiḥ by door-keepers, rāmāya to Rama, āvēditam was reported, tam him, prāptam had arrived, śrutvā ēva on listening, rāmaḥ Rama, śaṅkānvitaḥ abhavat was filled with apprehensions.

The door-keepers informed Rama of Sumantra's arrival. As soon as he learnt that Sumantra was back again, Rama was filled with apprehensions.
pravēśya cainaṅ tvaritaṅ rāmō vacanamabravīt.

yadāgamanakṛtyaṅ tē bhūyastadbrūhyaśēṣataḥ৷৷2.4.6৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, ēnam him, tvaritam quickly pravēśya having admitted , vacanam words abravīt said, bhūyaḥ again, tē your, āgamanakṛtyam purpose of coming back, yat whatever is there tat that one, aśēṣataḥ completely, brūhi tell

Rama got Sumantra admitted and said to him, What is the purpose of your coming back so quickly ? Tell me whatever is there without holding back.
tamuvāca tata ssūtō rājā tvāṅ draṣṭumicchati.

śrutvā pramāṇamatra tvaṅ gamanāyētarāya vā৷৷2.4.7৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, sūtaḥ charioteer, tam addressing him, uvāca spoke, rājā king, tvām you, draṣṭum to see, icchati desires, śrutvā having heard, atra in this matter, gamanāya either to go, itarāya vā or otherwise, tvam you alone, pramāṇam are the authority.

Then Sumantra replied, 'The king desires to see you. To go or not to go, the decision is yours'.
iti sūtavaca śśrutvā rāmō.tha tvarayā.nvitaḥ.

prayayau rājabhavanaṅ punardraṣṭuṅ narēśvaram৷৷2.4.8৷৷


iti thus, sūtavacaḥ words of the charioteer, śrutvā having heard, rāmaḥ Rama, atha afterwards, tvarayā with haste, anvitaḥ seized, narēśvaram king, punaḥ again, draṣṭum to see, rājabhavanam to royal palace, prayayau departed.

On hearing the words of the charioteer, Rama immediately set out for the royal palace to see the king again.
taṅ śrutvā samanuprāptaṅ rāmaṅ daśarathō nṛpaḥ.

pravēśayāmāsa gṛhaṅ vivakṣuḥ priyamuttamam৷৷2.4.9৷৷


daśarathaḥ nṛpaḥ king Dasaratha, tam rāmam that Rama, samanuprāptam of his arrival, śrutvā having heard, uttamam exceedingly, priyam pleasing, vivakṣuḥ to tell, gṛham palace, pravēśayāmāsa got him admitted.

Having heard of Rama's arrival, king Dasaratha got him admitted into his apartment to tell him something very pleasant.
praviśannēva ca śrīmānrāghavō bhavanaṅ pituḥ.

dadarśa pitaraṅ dūrātpraṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ৷৷2.4.10৷৷


śrīmān glorious, rāghavaḥ Rama, pituḥ father's, bhavanam palace, praviśannēva while entering, kṛtāñjaliḥ folded hands, dūrāt from a distance, pitaram to his father, praṇipatya bending low in reverence, dadarśa beheld.

On entering his father's palace, glorious Rama, folded his hands and bent low in reverence from a distance and beheld his father.
praṇamantaṅ samutthāpya taṅ pariṣvajya bhūmipaḥ.

pradiśya cāsmai ruciramāsanaṅ punarabravīt৷৷2.4.11৷৷


bhūmipaḥ protector of the earth (king Dasaratha), praṇamantam as he (Rama) was bending low, tam him, samutthāpya lifted up, pariṣvajya embracing, asmai him, ruciram splendid, āsanam seat, pradiśya ca having offered, punaḥ again, abravīt said.

As he (Rama) was bending (with reverence), Dasaratha lifted him up and embraced him. Thereafter, he offered him a splendid seat and said again:
rāma! vṛddhō.smi dīrghāyurbhuktā bhōgā mayēpsitāḥ.

annavadbhiḥ kratuśatai stathēṣṭaṅ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ৷৷2.4.12৷৷


rāma O Rama!, dīrghāyuḥ one with long life, vṛddhaḥ asmi I have become old, mayā by me, īpsitāḥ desires, bhōgāḥ pleasures, bhuktāḥ enjoyed, annavadbhiḥ cooked rice, bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ abundance of donations, kratuśataiḥ by hundreds of rituals, iṣṭam is performed.

O Rama! after a long life I have grown old. I have enjoyed all the pleasures I desired. I have also performed hundreds of rituals which enjoined distribution of abundant food and gifts.
jātamiṣṭamapatyaṅ mē tvamadyānupamaṅ bhuvi.

dattamiṣṭamadhītaṅ ca mayā puruṣasattama!৷৷2.4.13৷৷


purūṣasattama! the very best of men( Rama), tvam you, adya now, bhuvi on this earth, anupamam incomparable, iṣṭam to my liking, apatyam as progeny, mē to me, jātam was born, mayā by me, dattam given (performed), iṣṭam rituals (prescribed for kshatriyas), adhītaṅ ca studied (Vedas) also.

O best of men! I have obtained now a progeny of my liking in you and you have no equal on earth. I have given gifts, performed rituals and also studied (the Vedas) .
anubhūtāni cēṣṭāni mayā vīra sukhānyapi.

dēvarṣipitṛviprāṇāmanṛṇō.smi tathā.tmanaḥ৷৷2.4.14৷৷


vīra O mighty one!, mayā by me, iṣṭāni my favouite ones, sukhānyapi pleasures, anubhūtāni were experienced, dēvarṣipitṛviprāṇām with regard to my obligations to gods, sages, my ancestors and brahmins, tathā and also, ātmanaḥ for me, anṛṇaḥ asmi I am freed from debt.

O mighty son! I have experienced all the pleasures I longed for. I redeemed my debt to the gods, the sages, my ancestors, brahmins and to myself.
na kiñcinmama kartavyaṅ tavānyatrābhiṣēcanāt.

atō yattvāmahaṅ brūyāṅ tanmē tvaṅ kartumarhasi৷৷2.4.15৷৷


tava your, abhiṣēcanāt anyatra other than consecration, kartavyam duty, na kiñcit nothing, mama my, ataḥ for that reason, aham I, tvām to you, yat whatever, brūyām I shall tell you, tat that one, tvam you, mē to me, kartum to perform, arhasi it behoves you.

There is nothing left to be done by me except your consecration Hence you should perform what I tell you.
adya prakṛtayassarvāstvāmicchanti narādhipam.

atastvāṅ yuvarājānamabhiṣēkṣyāmi putraka৷৷2.4.16৷৷


adya today, sarvāḥ all, prakṛtayaḥ the subjects, tvām you, narādhipam as king, icchanti wish, putraka my dear son, ataḥ so, tvām you, yuvarājānam as heir-apparent, abhiṣēkṣyāmi I am going to install.

Today all the subjects expresed their desire to see you as their king. Therefore, my dear son, I wish to coronate you heir-apparent.
api cādyā.śubhānrāma! svapnē paśyāmi dāruṇān.

sanirghātā divōlkā ca patatīha mahāsvanā৷৷2.4.17৷৷


rāma O Rama!, api ca also, adya now, svapnē in a dream, dāruṇān frightening, aśubhān inauspicious events, paśyāmi am seeing, divā during day time, sanirghātā accompanied by thunders, mahāsvanā generating great sounds, ulkā meteor, iha here, patati is falling.

Moreover Rama, these days I see frightening and ominous events in dreams during day time. I see meteors accompanied by thunders falling, generating great sounds.
avaṣṭabdhaṅ ca mē rāma! nakṣatraṅ dāruṇairgrahaiḥ.

āvēdayanti daivajñāḥ sūryāṅgārakarāhubhiḥ৷৷2.4.18৷৷


rāma! O Rama!, sūryāṅgārakarāhubhiḥ Sun, Mars and Rahu, dāruṇaiḥ formidable, grahaiḥ planets, mē my, nakṣatram birth star, avaṣṭabdham have afflicted, daivajñāḥ astrologers, āvēdayanti are communicating.

O Rama! astrologers also tell me that formidable planets Sun, Mars and Rahu have afflicted my birth star.
prāyēṇa hi nimittānāmīdṛśānāṅ samudbhavē.

rājā hi mṛtyumāpnōti ghōrāṅ vā৷৷padamṛcchati৷৷2.4.19৷৷


īdṛśānām when such, nimittānām of ominous signs, samudbhavē appear, prāyēṇa hi usually, rājā king, mṛtyum death, āpnōti meets, ghōrām grave, āpadaṅ vā or calamity, ṛcchati faces.

When such ominous signs appear, usually the king either meets with death or faces a grave calamity.
tadyāvadēva mē cētō na vimuhyati rāghava!.

tāvadēvābhiṣiñcasva calā hi prāṇināṅ matiḥ৷৷2.4.20৷৷


tat so, rāghava! son of the Raghus (Rama), mē my, cētaḥ mind, yāvadēva so long as, na vimu3hyati is not deluded, tāvadēva till then, abhiṣiñcasva be consecrated, prāṇinām men's, matiḥ mind, calā hi is unstable indeed.

Therefore, before my mind is deluded I wish to see you installed as heir-apparent for a man's mind is unstable indeed, O Rama!.
adya candrō.bhyupagataḥ puṣyātpūrvaṅ punarvasū.

śvaḥ puṣyayōgaṅ niyataṅ vakṣyantē daivacintakāḥ৷৷2.4.21৷৷


adya today, candraḥ Moon, puṣyāt than star Pushya, pūrvam preceding, punarvasū constellation Punarvasu, abhyupagataḥ entered, śvaḥ tomorrow, puṣyayōgam in conjuction with Pushya constellation, niyatam certainly, daivacintakāḥ astrologers, vakṣyantē say

Today the Moon is in conjunction with the Punarvasu constellation. Tomorrow the Moon's conjunction with the Pushya constellation is certain and the astrologers say this auspicious time is highly suitable for the purpose of coronation.
tataḥ puṣyē.bhiṣiñcasva manastvarayatīva mām.

śvastvā.hamabhiṣēkṣyāmi yauvarājyē parantapa!৷৷2.4.22৷৷


tataḥ therefore, puṣyē in the Pushya constellation, abhiṣiñcasva be coronated , manaḥ my mind, mām me, tvarayatīva looks hastening up, parantapa! O slayer of enemies, aham I, śvaḥ tomorrow, tvām you, yauvarājyē as heir-apparent, abhiṣēkṣyāmi I shall install.

My mind is hastening me saying,'Coronate Rama in the Pushya constellation itself'.
O Slayer of enemies, I shall install you heir-apparent tomorrow.
tasmāttvayā.dya prabhṛti niśēyaṅ niyatātmanā.

saha vadhvōpavastavyā darbhaprastaraśāyinā৷৷2.4.23৷৷


tasmāt therefore, adyaprabhṛti from now, iyam this, niśā night, niyatātmanā with self-restraint, darbhaprastaraśāyinā sleeping on a bed of darbha or kusha grass, tvayā by you, vadhvā saha with daughter-in-law, Sita, upavastavyā should be spent by undertaking fasting.

Therefore, you and my daughter-in-law (Sita) should fast tonight and sleep on a bed of darbha or kusha grass with self-restraint.
suhṛdaścāpramattāstvāṅ rakṣantvadya samantataḥ.

bhavanti bahu vighnāni kāryāṇyēvaṅvidhāni hi৷৷2.4.24৷৷


adya today, suhṛdaśca your friends also, samantataḥ on all sides, apramattāḥ vigilantly, tvām you, rakṣantu protect, ēvaṅ vidhāni of this sort, kāryāṇi acts, bahuvighnāni many impediments, bhavanti hi will happen, indeed.

Many impediments befall acts of this sort indeed. Alert your friends to protect you from all sides today onwards.
viprōṣitaśca bharatō yāvadēva purāditaḥ.

tāvadēvābhiṣēkastē prāptakālō matō mama৷৷2.4.25৷৷


bharataḥ Bharata, itaḥ purāt from this city, yāvadēva while, viprōṣitaḥ away from, tāvadēva till that time, tē to you, abhiṣēkaḥ consecration, prāptakālaḥ favourable time, mama(mē) my, mataḥ opinion.

While Bharata is away from the city, the time is favourable for your installation. This is my opinion.
kāmaṅ khalu satāṅ vṛttē bhrātā tē bharatassthitaḥ.

jyēṣṭhānuvartī dharmātmā sānukrōśō jitēndriyaḥ৷৷2.4.26৷৷


tē your, bhrātā brother, bharataḥ Bharata, kāmam really, satāṅ vṛttē on the path of the virtuous, sthitaḥ stayed, jyēṣṭhānuvartī follows his elder brother, dharmātmā righteous, sānukrōśaḥ compassionate, jitēndriyaḥ has controlled his senses.

It is true, your brother Bharata has adhered to the path of the virtuous and has followed his elder brother. No doubt, he is righteous, compassionate and self- controlled.
kintu cittaṅ manuṣyāṇāmanityamiti mē matiḥ.

satāṅ ca dharmanityānāṅ kṛtaśōbhi ca rāghava!৷৷2.4.27৷৷


kintu yet, dharmanityānām those fixed in righteousness, satāṅ ca virtuous people also, manuṣyāṇām men's, kṛtaśōbhi made propitious, cittam mind, anityam iti is fickle, mē my, matiḥ my opinion.

Yet I think even the propitious minds of those who are virtuous and whose thoughts are fixed in righteousness can also become fickle.
ityukta ssō.bhyanujñāta śśvōbhāvinyabhiṣēcanē.

vrajēti rāmaḥ pitaramabhivādyābhyayādgṛham৷৷2.4.28৷৷


śvaḥ tomorrow, bhāvini that will take place, abhiṣēcanē about installation ceremony, iti thus, uktaḥ spoken of, saḥ that, rāmaḥ Rama, vraja iti 'you may go', abhyanujñātaḥ having been permitted, pitaram father, abhivādya having paid obeisance, gṛham to his abode, abhyayāt returned.

Having spoken to Rama about the installation ceremony fixed for the next day, he (Dasaratha) permitted him to leave saying, 'You may go'. Rama paid obeisance to his father and returned to his abode.
praviśya cātmanō vēśmarājñōddiṣṭē.bhiṣēcanē.

tatkṣaṇēna vinirgamya māturantapuraṅ yayau৷৷2.4.29৷৷


rājñā by the king, abhiṣēcanē with regard to installation, uddiṣṭē when it was fixed, ātmanaḥ his own, vēśma house, praviśya entered in, tatkṣaṇēna immediately, vinirgamya having left, mātuḥ mother's, antaḥpuram inner apartment, yayau departed.

With the installation fixed by the king, Rama went into his residence but left immediately to see his mother in her inner apartment.
tatra tāṅ pravaṇāmēva mātaraṅ kṣaumavāsinīm.

vāgyatāṅ dēvatāgārē dadarśā৷৷yācatīṅ śriyam৷৷2.4.30৷৷


tatra there, dēvatāgārē in the room (meant for worship) of the gods, pravaṇāmēva engrossed in devotion, kṣaumavāsinīm wearing silk apparels, vāgyatām silently, śriyam for royal fortune, āyācatīm praying, tām mātaram that mother, dadarśa beheld.

There he beheld his mother in silk apparel engrossed in silent prayer (to the gods) for his royal fortune in the room meant for the worship of the gods.
prāgēva cāgatā tatra sumitrā lakṣmaṇa stathā.

sītā cānāyitā śrutvā priyaṅ rāmābhiṣēcanam৷৷2.4.31৷৷


priyam welcome tidings, rāmābhiṣēcanam of installation of Rama, śrutvā having heard, prāgēva preceding him (Rama), tathā also, sumitrā Sumitra, āgatā had arrived, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, sītā ca also Sita, ānāyitā had been summoned.

Hearing the welcome tidings of the installation of her beloved Rama, Sita too, had been brought in. Sumitra and Lakshmana had already arrived there.
tasmin kālē hi kauśalyā tasthāvāmīlitēkṣaṇā.

sumitrayā.nvāsyamānā sītayā lakṣmaṇēna ca৷৷2.4.32৷৷


tasmin kālē at that moment, kauśalyā Kausalya, sumitrayā by Sumitra, sītayā by Sita, lakṣmaṇēna ca by Lakshmana, anvāsyamānā being accompanied, āmīlitēkṣaṇā with half-closed eyes, tasthau stood.

At that moment Kausalya was meditating with her eyes half-closed. Sumitra, Lakshmana and Sita were attending on her.
śrutvā puṣyēṇa putrasya yauvarājyā.bhiṣēcanam.

prāṇāyāmēna puruṣaṅ dhyāyamānā janārdanam৷৷2.4.33৷৷


puṣyēṇa In Pushya constellation, putrasya son's, yauvarājyābhiṣēcanam installation as heir-apparent, śrutvā having heard, prāṇāyāmēna by controlling the breath, puruṣam supreme god, janārdanam Lord Visnu, dhyāyamānā meditating upon.

Having heard that installation of her son as heir-apparent was planned in Pushya constellation, Kausalya was meditating upon the Supreme Person, Lord Visnu by controlling her breath (Pranayama).
tathā saniyamāmēva sō.bhigamyābhivādya ca.

uvāca vacanaṅ rāmō harṣayaṅstāmaninditām৷৷2.4.34৷৷


saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, tathā in that manner, saniyamāmēva engaged in prayer, abhigamya having approached, abhivādya ca having made reverential salutation, tām her, harṣayan enhancing her joy, aninditāṅ vacanam words of praise, uvāca said.

While she (Kausalya) was in that state of meditation, Rama approached her, offered reverential salutation and said these words of praise enhancing her joy:
amba! pitrā niyuktō.smi prajāpālanakarmaṇi.

bhavitā śvō.bhiṣēkō mē yathā mē śāsanaṅ pituḥ৷৷2.4.35৷৷


amba! O mother!, pitrā by father, prajāpālanakarmaṇi in the act of governing the people, niyuktaḥ asmi I have been assigned, mē my, pituḥ father's, śāsanam command, yathā as mentioned, śvaḥ tomorrow, mē my, abhiṣēkaḥ installation, bhavitā will take place.

O mother! father has assigned me the duties of governing the subjects. My installation takes place tomorrow on my father's command.
sītayāpyupavastavyā rajanīyaṅ mayā saha.

ēvamṛtvigupādhyāyai ssaha māmuktavānpitā৷৷2.4.36৷৷


iyam this, rajanī night, sītayāpi Sita also, mayā saha along with me, upavastavyā will fast, ēvam thus, ṛtvigupādhyāyaiḥ saha with officiating priests and spiritual preceptors, pitā father, mām addressing me, uktavān has said.

Tonight, Sita, the officiating priests and preceptors will take to fasting along with me. This is what father told me.
yāni yānyatra yōgyāni śvōbhāvinyabhiṣēcanē.

tāni mē maṅgalānyadya vaidēhyāścaiva kāraya৷৷2.4.37৷৷


śvaḥ tomorrow, bhāvini that will take place in future, abhiṣēcanē in installation ceremony, yāni yāni whatever, maṅgalāni auspicious rites, yōgyāni appropriate, tāni them, adya today, mē to me, vaidēhyāḥ caiva and also to Vaidehi (Sita), kāraya perform.

The installation takes place tomorrow. Perform today whatever auspicious rituals are appropriate (to the occasion) for me and Vaidehi (Sita).
ētacchrutvā tu kauśalyā cirakālābhikāṅkṣitam.

harṣabāṣpakalaṅ vākyamidaṅ rāmamabhāṣata৷৷2.4.38৷৷


kauśalyā tu Kausalya, cirakālābhikāṅkṣitam long cherished, ētat this (tiding relating to installation), śrutvā having heard, harṣabāṣpakalam in sweet but indistinct words due to tears of joy, idam these, vākyam words, rāmam addressing Rama, abhāṣata spoke.

Hearing this long cherished tiding (relating to installation) Kausalya spoke to Rama in sweet but indistinct words due to tears of joy.
vatsa! rāma! ciraṅ jīva hatāstē paripanthinaḥ.

jñātīnmē tvaṅ śriyā yukta ssumitrāyāśca nandaya৷৷2.4.39৷৷


vatsa! O child! rāma! O Rama!, ciraṅ for a long time, jīva live, tē your, paripanthinaḥ enemies, hatāḥ are destroyed, tvam you, śriyā yuktaḥ endowed with prosperity, mē my, jñātīn relatives, sumitrāyāḥ ca and those of Sumitra, nandaya bring delight.

O my dear child, O Rama, may you live long! Let your enemies be destroyed. Endowed with prosperity, bring delight to my relatives and those of Sumitra.
kalyāṇē bata nakṣatrē mayi jātō.si putraka.

yēna tvayā daśarathō guṇairārādhitaḥ pitā৷৷2.4.40৷৷


putraka O my son! yēna by whom, tvayā by you, pitā father, daśarathaḥ Dasaratha, guṇaiḥ with virtues, ārādhitaḥ caused delight, kalyāṇē under a lucky, nakṣatrē star, mayi in me, jātaḥ asi you were born, bata Oh what a joy!

O Rama, my little child! you were born to me under a lucky star. On this account you have delighted your father Dasaratha with your virtues. What a joy !
amōghaṅ bata mē kṣāntaṅ puruṣē puṣkarēkṣaṇē.

yēyamikṣvākurājyaśrīḥ putra tvāṅ saṅśrayiṣyati৷৷2.4.41৷৷


puṣkarēkṣaṇē in the lotus-eyed, puruṣē in Visnu, mē my, kṣāntam enduring the pain (of observance of vows and fasting), amōgham are not in vain, bata what a joy, putra son, yā iyam such,
ikṣvākurājyaśrīḥ the royal fortune of Ikshvakus, tvām you, saṅśrayiṣyati will take refuge in you.

O my son! my devotion to the lotus-eyed Visnu, enduring the pain (of observance of vows and fasting) have not gone in vain.The royal fortune of the Ikshvakus will pass on to you. What a joy!
ityēvamuktō mātrēdaṅ rāmō bhrātaramabravīt.

prāñjaliṅ prahvamāsīnamabhivīkṣya smayanniva৷৷2.4.42৷৷


mātrā by mother, ityēvam in this way, uktaḥ spoken, rāmaḥ Rama, prahvam in humble manner, prāñjalim with folded palms, āsīnam sitting, bhrātaram brother, Lakshmana, abhivīkṣya having looked at, smayanniva as if smiling, idam these words, abravīt said.

Thus spoken to by his mother, Rama looked at his brother Lakshmana sitting humbly with folded palms and with a smile said to him:
lakṣmaṇēmāṅ mayā sārdhaṅ praśādhi tvaṅ vasundharām.

dvitīyaṅ mē.ntarātmānaṅ tvāmiyaṅ śrīrupasthitā৷৷2.4.43৷৷


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, mayā sārtham along with me, tvam you, imām this, vasundharām earth, praśādhi rule, mē my, dvitīyam second, antarātmānam the innermost self, tvām you, iyam śrīḥ this royal fortune, upasthitā reached.

O Lakshmana! rule this earth together with me. This royal fortune also accrues to you, for you are my second innermost self.
saumitrē! bhuṅkṣva bhōgāṅtsvamiṣṭānrājyaphalāni ca.

jīvitaṅ ca hi rājyaṅ ca tvadarthamabhikāmayē৷৷2.4.44৷৷


saumitrē! O son of Sumitra, tvam you, iṣṭān desirable, bhōgān pleasures, rājyaphalāni ca fruits of royalty, bhuṅkṣva you may enjoy, jīvitaṅ ca life also, rājyaṅ ca as well as kingdom, tvadartham for your sake, abhikāmayē hi I am desiring.

O, son of Sumitra, enjoy all pleasures you wish and the fruits of royalty. I desire this life and kingdom for your sake only.
ityuktvā lakṣmaṇaṅ rāmō mātarāvabhivādya ca.

abhyanujñāpya sītāṅ ca jagāma svaṅ nivēśanam৷৷2.4.45৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, iti thus, uktvā having spoken, mātarau to the two mothers, abhivādya ca having made reverential salutation, sītāṅ ca Sita also, abhyanujñāpya having made her take leave of them, svam his own, nivēśanam abode, jagāma went.

After speaking to Lakshmana, Rama made reverential salutation to the two mothers and on obtaining their consent to leave with Sita, returned to his abode.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē caturthassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fourth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
