[Bharadwaja welcomes Bharata and Vasistha --- Bharata discloses his intention to get back Rama.]

bharadvājāśramaṅ dṛṣṭvā krōśādēva nararṣabhaḥ.

balaṅ sarvamavasthāpya jagāma saha mantribhiḥ৷৷2.90.1৷৷

padbhyāmēva hi dharmajñō nyastaśastraparicchadaḥ.

vasānō vāsasī kṣaumē purōdhāya purōdhasam৷৷2.90.2৷৷


dharmajñaḥ knower of righteous ways, nararṣabhaḥ the best among men, krōśādēva from a distance of one krosa, bharadvājāśramam Bharadwaja's hermitage, dṛṣṭvā having seen, sarvam entire, balam army, avasthāpya brought to a halt, nyastaśastraparicchadaḥ lay aside the royal robes and weapons, kṣaumē vāsasī silk garments, vasānaḥ wearing, purōdhasam with family priest, Vasistha, purōdhāya placing ahead of him, mantribhissaha along with ministers, padbhyām ēva on foot, jagāma went.

Bharata, the knower of righteous ways and the best among men, saw the hermitage of Bharadwaja from a distance of one krosa and brought his entire army to a halt. He laid aside all his royal robes and weapons. Clad in silk garments, he went on foot along with his ministers, with the family priest Vasistha ahead of him.
bharadvājāśramaṅ dṛṣṭvā krōśādēva nararṣabhaḥ.

tata ssandarśanē tasya bharadvājasya rāghavaḥ.

mantriṇastānavasthāpya jagāmānupurōhitam৷৷2.90.3৷৷


tataḥ then, rāghavaḥ scion of the Raghu race (Bharata), tān mantriṇaḥ those ministers, tasya bharadvājasya that Bharadwaja's, saṅdarśanē within sight, avasthāpya halted, anupurōhitam following his priest jagāma went.

Then the scion of the Raghu race (Bharata) halted his ministers within sight of Bharadwaja's (hermitage) and went along following his priest Vasistha.
vasiṣṭhamatha dṛṣṭvaiva bharadvājō mahātapāḥ.

sañcacā.lāsanāttūrṇaṅ śiṣyānarghyamiti bruvan৷৷2.90.4৷৷


atha thereafter, mahātapāḥ the great ascetic, bharadvājaḥ Bharadwaja, vasiṣṭham Vasistha, dṛṣṭvaiva on seeing, arghyam iti bring offerings of water, śiṣyān to disciples, bruvan saying, tūrṇam soon, āsanāt from seat, sañcacāla moved.

On seeing Vasistha, the great ascetic Bharadwaja immediately left his seat and said to his disciples, Bring offerings of water.
samāgamya vasiṣṭhēna bharatēnābhivāditaḥ.

abuddhyata mahātējāssutaṅ daśarathasya tam৷৷2.90.5৷৷


mahātējāḥ radiant Bharadwaja, vasiṣṭhēna with Vasistha, samāgamya having met, bharatēna by Bharata, abhivāditaḥ greeted, tam him, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, sutam as son, abuddhyata knew of.

After meeting Vasistha and greeted by Bharata, the radiant Bharadwaja could recognize he was the son of Dasaratha.
tābhyāmarghyaṅ ca pādyaṅ ca datvā paścātphalāni ca.

ānupūrvyāccha dharmajñaḥ papraccha kuśalaṅ kulē৷৷2.90.6৷৷


dharmajñaḥ knower of righteous ways (Bharadwaja), ānupūrvyāt in order, tābhyām to both of them, arghyaṅ ca welcome-offering, pādyaṅ ca water for washing feet, paścāt thereafter, phalāni
ca fruits, datvā having given, kulē in the family, kuśalam welfare, papraccha enquired.

Offering them both in order arghya (welcome-offering), water to wash their feet and fruits in accordance with the practice, he enquired Bharata about the welfare of the family.
ayōdhyāyāṅ balē kōśē mitrēṣvapi ca mantriṣu.

jānan daśarathaṅ vṛttaṅ na rājānamudāharat৷৷2.90.7৷৷


ayōdhyāyām in Ayodhya, balē in the army, kōśē in the treasury, mitrēṣvapi ca of the friends also, mantriṣu of the ministers, vṛttam well-being, jānan knowingly, rājānam king, daśaratham Dasaratha, nōdāharat did not mention.

He enquired about the welfare of Ayodhya, of the army, treasury, friends and the ministers. But knowingly did not mention about Dasaratha's well-being (the knew Dasaratha was dead).
vasiṣṭhō bharataścainaṅ papracchaturanāmayam.

śarīrē.gniṣu vṛkṣēṣu śiṣyēṣu mṛgapakṣiṣu৷৷2.90.8৷৷


vasiṣṭhaḥ Vasistha, bharataśca also Bharata, ēnam him, śarīrē about his health, agniṣu his sacred fires, vṛkṣēṣu his trees, śiṣyēṣu his disciples, mṛgapakṣiṣu about animals and birds, anāmayam well being, papracchatuḥ enquired.

Vasistha and Bharata also enquired about his health and welfare of his sacred fires, his disciples, animals and birds and trees of the hermitage.
tathēti tatpratijñāya bharadvājō mahātapāḥ.

bharataṅ pratyuvācēdaṅ rāghavasnēhabandhanāt৷৷2.90.9৷৷


mahātapāḥ the great ascetic, bharadvājaḥ Bharadwaja, tathēti saying so, so, tat that welfare, pratijñāya informing, rāghavasnēhabandhanāt out of affection for Rama, bharataṅ prati addressing
Bharata, idam these words, uvāca said.

Saying, all is well, the great ascetic Bharadwaja, out of his affection for Rama, said to Bharata:
kimihā.gamanē kāryaṅ tava rājyaṅ praśāsataḥ.

ētadācakṣva mē sarvaṅ na hi mē śuddhyatē manaḥ৷৷2.90.10৷৷


rājyam kingdom, praśāsataḥ while ruling over, tava for you, iha here, āgamanē in the arrival, kāryam reason, kim what, ētat all this, sarvam completely, mē to me, ācakṣva tell, mē to me, manaḥ my mind, na hi śuddhyatē is not clear about it.

Why have you come here when you ought to be ruling the kingdom? Tell me everything about this. My mind is not clear in this matter.
suṣuvē yamamitraghnaṅ kausalyāna.ndavardhanam.

bhrātrā saha sabhāryō yaściraṅ pravrājitō vanam৷৷2.90.11৷৷

niyuktaḥ strīniyuktēna pitrā yō.sau mahāyaśāḥ.

vanavāsī bhavētīha samāḥ kila caturdaśa৷৷2.90.12৷৷

kacchinna tasyāpāpasya pāpaṅ kartumihēcchasi.

akaṇṭakaṅ bhōktumanā rājyaṅ tasyānujasya ca৷৷2.90.13৷৷


amitraghnam destroyer of enemies, ānandavardhanam enhances the delight of, yaṅ that Rama, kausalyā Kausalya, suṣuvē gave birth, yaḥ that, sabhāryaḥ with his wife, bhrātrā saha along with his brother, ciram for a long time, vanam to the forest, pravrājitaḥ has been banished, mahāyaśāḥ illustrious, yaḥ asau that Rama, strī niyuktēna urged by a woman, pitrā by his father, caturdaśa fourteen, samāḥ years, vanavāsī living in the forest, bhava shall become, iti thus, iha here, niyuktaḥ has been ordered, tasya his, apāpasya sinless, tasya his, anujasya ca brother, pāpam harm, kartum to do, akaṇṭakam without obstacles, rājyam kingdom, bhōktumanāḥ to enjoy, iha here, na icchasi not intending to do so?

Rama, destroyer of enemies and enhancer of the delight of his mother Kausalya, has been banished to the forest for a long time along with his wife and brother. That illustrious one has been ordered by his father to live in the forest for fourteen years through the pursuasion of a woman. To enjoy the kingdom without obstacles do you intend to cause any harm to that irreproachable Rama and his brother?
ēvamuktō bharadvājaṅ bharataḥ pratyuvāca ha.

paryaśrunayanō duḥkhādvācā saṅsajjamānayā৷৷2.90.14৷৷


ēvam thus, uktaḥ addressed, bharataḥ Bharata, duḥkhāt with grief, paryaśrunayanaḥ with tears in his eyes, saṅsajjamānayā with stumbling, vācā words, bharadvājam to Bharadwaja, pratyuvāca ha said in reply.

At these words, Bharata, eyes filled with tears of grief, replied to Bharadwaja in a stumbling voice:
hatō.smi yadi māmēvaṅ bhagavānapi manyatē.

mattō na dōṣamāśaṅkē naivaṅ māmanuśāstu hi.2.90.15৷৷


bhagavānapi even one venerable like you, mām about me, ēvam in this way, manyatē yadi if you think, hataḥ asmi I am done with, mattaḥ from me, dōṣam evil, na āśaṅkē do not suspect, mām me, ēvam in this way, na anuśāstu hi not rebuke.

When one so venerable like you too misunderstands me, I am gone. There is no danger for him from me. Do not rebuke me this way.
na caitadiṣṭaṅ mātā mē yadavōcanmadantarē.

nāhamētēna tuṣṭaśca na tadvacanamādadē৷৷2.90.16৷৷


mē mātā my mother, madantarē in my absence, yat whatever, avōcat said, ētat that one, iṣṭam to my liking, na ca not, ētēna by this, aham I, tuṣṭaśca pleased, na not, tadvacanaṅ those words, na
ādadē I do not accept.

I do not approve of whatever my mother said in my absence. I am not happy with those words and I do not accept them.
ahaṅ tu taṅ naravyāghramupayātaḥ prasādakaḥ.

pratinētumayōdhyāṅ ca pādau tasyābhivanditum৷৷2.90.17৷৷


ahaṅ tu as for me, naravyāghram the best among men, Rama, tam him, prasādakaḥ after persuading, ayōdhyām to Ayodhya, pratinētum to take him back, tasya his, pādau feet, abhivanditum ca to worship, upayātaḥ I have come.

I have come to worship the feet of Rama, the best of men and persuade him to return to Ayodhya.
tvaṅ māmēvaṅgataṅ matvā prasādaṅ kartumarhasi.

śaṅsa mē bhagavanrāmaḥ kva samprati mahīpatiḥ৷৷2.90.18৷৷


bhagavan O Lord, tvam you, mām me, ēvaṅgatam in these circumstances, matvā having considered, prasādam kindness, kartum to do, arhasi be pleased, mahīpatiḥ lord of the earth, rāmaḥ Rama, samprati now, kva where, mē to me, śaṅsa tell.

O venerable one! in consideration of the circumstances I am in, be kind to me and tell me the whereabouts of Rama, lord of the earth.
vaśiṣṭhādibhiḥ ṛtvigbhiryācitō bhagavāṅstataḥ.

uvāca taṅ bharadvājaḥ prasādādbharataṅ vacaḥ.2.90.19৷৷


tataḥ then, vaśiṣṭhādibhiḥ by Vasistha and others, ṛtvigbhiḥ by the priests, yācitaḥ besought, bhagavān the venerable one, bharadvājaḥ Bharadwaja, prasādāt with pleasure, taṅ bharatam to Bharata, vacaḥ these words, uvāca said.

Likewise besought by Vasistha and other priests, the venerable Bharadwaja was pleased to tell Bharata:
tvayyētatpuruṣavyāghra yuktaṅ rāghavavaṅśajē.

guruvṛttirdamaścaiva sādhūnāmanuyāyitā৷৷2.90.20৷৷


puruṣavyāghraḥ O best of men, guruvṛtti: conduct towards spiritual preceptors, damaścaiva control over senses, sādhūnām of virtuous people, anuyāyitā following, ētat all this, rāghavavaṅśajē born in the Raghu race, tvayi in you, yuktam is appropriate.

O best of men (Bharata)! your conduct towards the preceptors, your self-restraint and devotion to the virtuous are all in keeping with those born in the race of Raghu.
jānē caitanmanasthaṅ tē dṛḍhīkaraṇamastviti.

apṛcchaṅ tvāṅ tathā.tyarthaṅ kīrtiṅ samabhivardhayan৷৷2.90.21৷৷


tē your, manastham feelings of your heart, ētat this, jānē ca I am aware, dṛḍhīkaraṇam astu let it be confirmed, iti in this manner, (tava your), kīrtim fame, atyartham greatly, samabhivardhayan to increase it, tvām you, apṛccham I asked.

I am aware of the feelings in your heart. Even then I enquired in order to confirm it and to further your fame.
jānē ca rāmaṅ dharmajñaṅ sasītaṅ sahalakṣmaṇam.

asau vasati tē bhrātā citrakūṭē mahāgirau৷৷2.90.22৷৷


dharmajñam knower of righteousness (Rama), sasītam with Sita, sahalakṣmaṇam with Lakshmana, rāmam Rama, jānē ca I know, asau tē bhrātā this your brother, citrakūṭē in Chitrakuta, mahāgirau mountain, vasati is living.

I know your brother who is conversant with righteousness is living on Chitrakuta mountain with Sita and Lakshmana.
śvastu gantāsi taṅ dēśaṅ vasādya saha mantribhiḥ.

ētanmē kuru suprājña kāmaṅ kāmārthakōvida৷৷2.90.23৷৷


taṅ dēśam to that place, śvaḥ tomorow, gantāsi shall go, adya today, mantribhissaha along with ministers, vasa you may stay, suprājña O supremely sagacious prince, kāmārthakōvida who is aware of kama (desire) and artha (prosperity), mē my, ētam this, kāmaṅ desire, kuru fulfil.

O supremely sagacious prince gifted with the knowledge of kama (desire) and artha (wealth), tomorrow you go, but to night stay here with your ministers and fulfil my desire.
tatastathētyēvamudāradarśanaḥ pratītarūpō bharatō.bravīdvacaḥ.

cakāra buddhiṅ ca tadā tadāśramē niśānivāsāya narādhipā.tmajaḥ৷৷2.90.24৷৷


udāradarśanaḥ a man of liberal outlook, bharataḥ Bharata, pratītarūpaḥ expressing his intention, tataḥ then, tathā be it so, ityēvam saying, vacaḥ words, abravīt said, tadā then, narādhipātmajaḥ son of the king, tadāśramē in that hermitage, niśānivāsāya to spend the night, buddhim decision, cakāra made.

A man of liberal disposition, Bharata expressed his intention, saying, 'Be it so'. Then the prince made up him mind to spend the might in that hermitage.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē navatitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the ninetieth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
