[Unable to find Sita, Rama gets restless -- Lakshmana consoles him -- Rama's speculation about Sita.]

दृष्ट्वाश्रमपदं शून्यं रामो दशरथात्मजः।

रहितां पर्णशालां च विध्वस्तान्यासनानि च।।3.61.1।।

अदृष्ट्वा तत्र वैदेहीं सन्निरीक्ष्य च सर्वशः।

उवाच रामः प्राक्रुश्य प्रगृह्य रुचिरौ भुजौ।।3.61.2।।


दशरथात्मजः son of Dasaratha, रामः Rama, शून्यम् empty, आश्रमपदम् hermitage, रहिताम् devoid of, च and, विध्वस्तानि disturbed, आसनानि च seats, दृष्ट्वा saw, तत्र thereafter, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, अदृष्ट्वा having not seen, सर्वशः all over, सन्निरीक्ष्य च scanning, प्राक्रुश्य etched, रुचिरौ lovely, भुजौ shoulders, प्रगृह्य holding, उवाच said.

Rama, son of Dasaratha, saw the empty cottage devoid of Sita. The mats were displaced. He searched everywhere but unable to see Vaidehi lifted his lovely arms and said:
क्व नु लक्ष्मण वैदेही कं वा देशमितो गता।

केनाहृता वा सौमित्रे भक्षिता केन वा प्रिया।।3.61.3।।


लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, वैदेही Vaidehi, क्व नु where is she, कं वा देशम् in which land, गता gone, सौमित्रे O son of Sumitra, केन by whom, आहृता वा is abducted, प्रिया my beloved, केन वा by whom, भक्षिता eaten.

O son of Sumitra, where is my beloved ? Where did she go? By whom was she abducted? Or, devoured? O Lakshmana
वृक्षेणाच्छाद्य यदि मां सीते हसितुमिच्छसि।

अलं ते हसितेनाद्य मां भजस्व सुदुःखितम्।।3.61.4।।


सीते O Sita, वृक्षेण by tree, आच्छाद्य hiding behind, माम् me, हसितुम् to make fun, इच्छसि यदि are you intending to, ते you, हसितेन fun, अलम् enough, अद्य now, सुदुःखितम् very muchgrieved, माम् me, भजस्व come to me.

O Sita if you intend to make fun by hiding behind a tree, I tell you it is enough. Stop it and come to this extremely sorrowful man.
यैस्सह क्रीडसे सीते विश्वस्तैर्मृगपोतकैः।

एते हीनास्त्वया सौम्ये ध्यायन्त्यस्राविलेक्षणाः।।3.61.5।।


सौम्ये O gentle lady, सीते Sita, विश्वस्तैः relied on you, यैः by those, मृगपोतकैः सह with the fawn, क्रीडसे play, एते these, त्वया by you, हीनाः separated, अस्राविलेक्षणाः eyes filled with tears, ध्यायन्ति they are thinking of you.

O gentle Sita those fawns who trusted you and played with you, are now separated from you. Brooding over you, their eyes are brimming with tears.
सीतया रहितोऽहं वै न हि जीवामि लक्ष्मण।

मृतं शोकेन महता सीताहरणजेन माम्।।3.61.6।।

परलोके महाराजो नूनं द्रक्ष्यति मे पिता।


लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, सीतया by Sita, रहितः without, अहम् I, न हि जीवामि I cannot live, सीताहरणजेन arising out of Sita's abduction, महता by deep, शोकेन by grief, मृतं dead, माम् me, महाराजः the king (Dasaratha), मे पिता my father, नूनम् certainly, परलोके in the other world, द्रक्ष्यति will meet me.

O Lakshmana, I cannot live without Sita. I am filled with deep grief on account of Sita's abduction. My late father, the king will certainly see me in the other world (I will definitely commit suicide).
कथं प्रतिज्ञां संश्रुत्य मया त्वमभियोजितः।।3.61.7।।

अपूरयित्वा तं कालं मत्सकाशमिहागतः।

कामवृत्तमनार्यं मां मृषावादिनमेव च।।3.61.8।।

धिक्त्वामिति परे लोके व्यक्तं वक्ष्यति मे पिता।


माम् me, मया by me, अभियोजितः employed by me, त्वम् you, प्रतिज्ञाम् a vow, संश्रुत्य having promised, तं कालम् that full term, अपूरयित्वा without completing, मत्सकाशम् into my presence, कथम् how, इह here, आगतः came, कामवृत्तम् an irresponsible person, अनार्यम् ignoble, मृषावादिनमेव च liar, त्वाम् you, धिक् fie upon, इति thus, परे लोके in the other world, मे पिता my father, व्यक्तम् surely, वक्ष्यति will tell me.

My father say will surely in the other world: Without completing the appointed period of the vow taken, how could you come here ? Fie upon you You are irresponsible. You are ignoble. You are a liar.
विवशं शोकसन्तप्तं दीनं भग्नमनोरथम्।।3.61.9।।

मामिहोत्सृज्य करुणं कीर्तिर्नरमिवानृजुम्।

क्व गच्छसि वरारोहे मां नोत्सृज सुमध्यमे।।3.61.10।।

त्वया विरहितश्चाहं मोक्ष्ये जीवितमात्मनः।


वरारोहे lovely lady, विवशम् helpless, शोकसन्तप्तम् tormented by sorrow, दीनम् piteous, भग्नमनोरथम् disappointed , माम् me, कीर्तिः fame, अनृजुम् crook, नरमिव like such a man, इह here, करुणम् pitiable, उत्सृज्य leaving, क्व गच्छसि where have you gone, सुमध्यमे lady with a slender waist, मा myself, मा उत्सृज leave me not, त्वया by you, विरहितः separated, अहम् I, आत्मनः my, जीवितम् life, मोक्ष्ये I will give up.

O lovely lady where have you gone, leaving me here like fame deserting a crook? I am helpless griefstricken, pitiable, pathetic and disappointed. O lady of slender waist, leave me not. Separated from you, I will give up my life.
इतीव विलपन्रामस्सीतादर्शनलालसः।।3.61.11।।

न ददर्श सुदुःखार्तो राघवो जनकात्मजाम्।


सीतादर्शनलालसः eager to see Sita, सुदुःखार्तः deeply distressed, राघवः Rama, इतीव in that manner, विलपन् wailed, जनकात्मजाम् the daughter of Janaka, न ददर्श did not see.

Deeply distressed, Rama who was anxious to see Sita, daughter of Janaka, wailed and wailed but could not see her.
अनासादयमानं तं सीतां दशरथात्मजम्।।3.61.12।।

पङ्कमासाद्य विपुलं सीदन्तमिव कुञ्जरम्।

लक्ष्मणो राममत्यर्थमुवाच हितकाम्यया।।3.61.13।।


सीताम् Sita, अनासादयमानम् unable to find, दशरथात्मजम् the son of Dasaratha, विपुलम् deep, पङ्कम् mud, आसाद्य reached, सीदन्तम् sinking, कुञ्जरम् इव like an elephant, तं रामम् that Rama, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अत्यर्थम् great, हितकाम्यया for his welfare, उवाच said.

Lakshmana, dedicated to his wellbeing, spoke to Rama, son of Dasaratha, who was sinking like an elephant into the quagmire, when he failed to trace Sita.
मा विषादं महाबाहो कुरु यत्नं मया सह।

इदं च हि वनं शूर बहुकन्दरशोभितम्।।3.61.14।।


महाबाहो longarmed, विषादम् sorrow, मा do not resort to, मया सह along with me, यत्नम् effort, कुरु do, शूर O hero, इदम् this,वनम् forest,बहुकन्दरशोभितं हि full of caves.

O longarmed, heroic Rama, do not grieve. This forest is full of caves. Let us try together.
प्रियकाननसञ्चारा वनोन्मत्ता च मैथिली।

सा वनं वा प्रविष्टा स्यान्नलिनीं वा सुपुष्पिताम्।।3.61.15।।


प्रियकाननसञ्चारा one who is fond of wandering in the forest, वनोन्मत्ताच mad after forest , सा मैथिली that Maithili, वनं वा or in the forest, सुपुष्पिताम् flowering, नलिनीं वा or lotuspond, प्रविष्टा has entered, स्यात् perhaps.

Sita is madly in love with the forest. She might have entered deep into the jungle or into a fully blossomed lotuspond.
सरितं वापि सम्प्राप्ता मीनवञ्जुलसेविताम्।

स्नातुकामा निलीना स्याद्धासकामा वने क्वचित्।।3.61.16।।


स्नातुकामा ta take a dip, मीनवञ्जुलसेविताम् full of reeds and fishes, सरितं वापि or rivers, सम्प्राप्ता has reached, हासकामा to make fun, क्वचित् some where, निलीना वा might have hidden, स्यात् it may be so.

Maybe she has gone to take a dip in the river full of reeds and fishes Or has hidden somewhere for the sake of fun.
वित्रासयितुकामा वा लीना स्यात्कानने क्वचित्।

जिज्ञासमाना वैदेही त्वां मां च पुरुषर्षभ।।3.61.17।।

तस्याह्यन्वेषणे श्रीमन् क्षिप्रमेव यतावहे।


पुरुषर्षभ O bull among men, वैदेही Vaidehi, त्वां च at you, मां च at me, वित्रासयितुकामा वा intending to scare us, जिज्ञासमाना desire to know, कानने in the forest, क्वचित् somewhere, लीना hidden, स्यात् may be, श्रीमन् O blessed , तस्याः her, अन्वेषणे in search, क्षिप्रमेव immediately, यतावहे both of us will strive.

O best of men, maybe Vaidehi has hidden in the forest intending to scare you and me. She wishes to test our love. O blessed Rama let us ransack the forest immediately.
वनं सर्वं विचिनुवो यत्र सा जनकात्मजा।।3.61.18।।

मन्यसे यदि काकुत्स्थ मा स्म शोके मनः कृथाः।


काकुत्स्थ Rama, मन्यसे यदि if you think , सा she, जनकात्मजा Sita, यत्र wherever, सर्वम् all, वनम् forest, विचिनुव: we both will search, शोके in grief, मनः mind, मा स्म कृथाः do not indulge.

O scion of the Kakutsthas, let us search all over the forest if you please. Do not indulge in sorrow.
एवमुक्तस्तु सौहार्दाल्लक्ष्मणेन समाहितः।।3.61.19।।

सह सौमित्रिणा रामो विचेतुमुपचक्रमे।


लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, सौहार्दात् very affectionately, एवम् in that way, उक्तः having been told, रामः Rama, समाहितः became composed, सौमित्रिणा सह along with Lakshmana the son of Sumitra, विचेतुम् to search, उपचक्रमे he started.

When Lakshmana consoled him so affectionately Rama became composed. He continued the search with Lakshmana, son of Sumitra.
तौ वनानि गिरींश्चैव सरितश्च सरांसि च।।3.61.20।।

निखिलेन विचिन्वानौ सीतां दशरथात्मजौ।


तौ दशरथात्मजौ those two sons of Dasaratha, वनानि forests, गिरीन् चैव and the mountains, सरितश्च and the rivers, सरांसि च and the ponds, निखिलेन entirly, सीताम् for Sita, विचिन्वानौ while they searched.

The two sons of Dasaratha went on searching for Sita in forests, mountains, rivers, ponds everywhere.
तस्य शैलस्य सानूनि गुहाश्च शिखराणि च।।3.61.21।।

निखिलेन विचिन्वानौ नैव तामभिजग्मतुः।


तस्य शैलस्य that mountain's, सानूनि slopes, गुहाश्च caves also, शिखराणि च mountain peaks too, निखिलेन entirely, विचिन्वानौ searched, ताम् her, नैव अभिजग्मतुः were not able to find.

They were not able to find Sita even though they searched all over the mountain slopes, caves and peaks.
विचित्य सर्वतश्शैलं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवित्।।3.61.22।।

नेह पश्यामि सौमित्रे वैदेहीं पर्वते शुभाम्।


रामः Rama, सर्वतः everywhere, शैलम् mountain, विचित्य after searching, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said, सौमित्रे O son of Sumitra, इह here, पर्वते on mountains, शुभाम् noble lady, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, न पश्यामि not seen.

After searching her all over, Rama said Saumitri, I am unable to find the noble Vaidehi on the mountain
ततो दुःखाभिसन्तप्तो लक्ष्मणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।3.61.23।।

विचरन्दण्डकारण्यं भ्रातरं दीप्ततेजसम्।


ततः then, दुःखाभिसन्तप्तः consumed by sorrow, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, दण्डकारण्यम् Dandaka forest, विचरन् while going about, दीप्ततेजसम् glowing with brilliance, भ्रातरम् brother, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Going about the Dandaka forest Lakshmana, consumed by sorrow, said to his brother, glowing with brilliance:
प्राप्स्यसि त्वं महाप्राज्ञ मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम्।।3.61.24।।

यथा विष्णुर्महाबाहुर्बलिं बद्ध्वा महीमिमाम्।


महाप्राज्ञ O wise sire, त्वम् you, जनकात्मजाम् daughter of Janaka, मैथिलीम् princess from
Mithila, महाबाहुः one with long arms, विष्णुः Visnu, बलिम् Bali, बद्ध्वा after binding, इमाम् this, महीं यथा earned this earth, प्राप्स्यसि you will attain.

O longarmed brother O wise sire just as Visnu obtained the earth by binding Bali you will obtain Sita certainly.
एवमुक्तस्तु सौहार्दाल्लक्ष्मणेन स राघवः।।3.61.25।।

उवाच दीनया वाचा दुःखाभिहतचेतनः।


लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, सौहार्दात् affectionately, एवम् in that way, उक्तः having been said, सः राघवः that Rama, दुःखाभिहतचेतनः with griefstriken heart, दीनया piteously, वाचा by words, उवाच said.

Having been addressed thus by Lakshmana, Raghava with a griefstriken heart said these piteous words :'
Lakshmana,having spoken like that very affectionately to Rama,who was disturbed by excessive grief said these words piteously:
वनं सर्वं सुविचितं पद्मिन्यः फुल्लपङ्कजाः।।3.61.26।।

गिरिश्चायं महाप्राज्ञ बहुकन्दरनिर्झरः।

न हि पश्यामि वैदेहीं प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसीम्।।3.61.27।।


महाप्राज्ञ wise sire, सर्वम् all over, वनम् the forest, सुविचितम् searched thoroughly, फ़ुल्लपङ्कजाः fully blossomed lotuses, पद्मिन्यः lotusponds, बहुकन्दर निर्झरः having many caves and streams, अयम् I, गिरिश्च mountains also, प्राणेभ्योऽपि more than my life, गरीयसीम् more important, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, न हि पश्यामि do not see.

O wise Lakshmana I have searched the entire forest, the ponds with fully blossomed lotuses, the mountains with many caves and streams. But could not see Vaidehi who is dearer to me than my life.
एवं स विलपन्रामस्सीताहरणकर्शितः।

दीनश्शोकसमाविष्टो मुहूर्तं विह्वलोऽभवत्।।3.61.28।।


सीताहरणकर्शितः tormented by Sita's abduction, सः रामः Rama, एवम् thus, विलपन् cried, दीनः was dejected, शोकसमाविष्टः overpowered by grief, मुहूर्तम् for a moment, विह्वलः consciousess lost, अभवत् became.

Thus tormented by the abduction of Sita, Rama felt dejected and cried.Overpowered by grief he lost his consciousness for a moment.
सन्तप्तो ह्यवसन्नाङ्गो गतबुद्धिर्विचेतनः।

निषसादातुरो दीनो निश्श्वस्याशीतमायतम्।।3.61.29।।


सन्तप्तः tormented, अवसन्नाङ्गः with limbs enervated, गतबुद्धि: intellect atrophied, विचेतनः lost senses, आतुरः anxious, दीनः dejected, अशीतम् hot, आयतम् long, निश्श्वस्य sighing, निषसाद reclined.

By grief tormented, limbs enervated, intellect atrophied, senses switched off, he felt anxious and depressed and sighed long and hot.
बहुलं स तु निश्श्वस्य रामो राजीवलोचनः।

हा प्रियेति विचुक्रोश बहुशो बाष्पगद्गदः।।3.61.30।।


राजीवलोचनः lotuseyed, सः रामः that Rama, बहुलम् long, निश्श्वस्य sighing, बाष्पगद्गदः throat choked with sobbing, हा प्रियेति saying 'Alas, my darling', बहुशः many times, विचुक्रोश cried lotuseyed.

Rama, his throat choked, shed propuse tears, sighing, O my darling.
तं ततस्सान्त्वयामास लक्ष्मणः प्रियबान्धवः।

बहुप्रकारं धर्मज्ञः प्रश्रितं प्रश्रिताञ्जलिः।।3.61.31।।


ततः then, प्रियबान्धवः dear friend, धर्मज्ञः knower of dharma, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, प्रश्रिताञ्जलिः with folded palms, प्रश्रितम् humbly, बहुप्रकारम् many ways, तम् him, सान्त्वयामास consoled.

Then Lakshmana, the knower of dharma and a dear friend offered obeisance most humbly with folded palms and consoled Rama in many ways.
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं लक्ष्मणोष्ठपुटाच्च्युतम्।

अपश्यंस्तां प्रियां सीतां प्राक्रोशत्स पुनः पुनः।।3.61.32।।


सः he, तु on his part, लक्ष्मणोष्ठपुटात् from the lips of Lakshmana, च्युतम् uttered, तत् that, वाक्यम् words, अनादृत्य not caring, प्रियाम् beloved, तां सीताम् that Sita, अपश्यन् not able to see, पुनः पुनः again and again, प्राक्रोशत् cried loudly.

Without caring for the words from the lips of Lakshmana, Rama sobbed loudly, unable to see his beloved Sita.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे एकषष्टितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the sixtyfirst sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
