[Tara consoles Lakshmana --- gives reasons for the delay in action --- Tara's request pacifies Lakshmana --- Sugriva commands the army.]

tathā bruvāṇaṅ saumitriṅ pradīptamiva tējasā.

abravīllakṣmaṇaṅ tārā tārādhipanibhānanā৷৷4.35.1৷৷


tathā that way, bruvāṇam when he spoke, tējasā with brilliance, pradīptamiva as if glowing, saumitrim to Saumitri, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, tārādhipanibhānanā a lady with a Moon-like face, tārā Tara, abravīt said.

While Lakshmana, the son of Sumitra, was glowing like fire with his brilliance, thus spoke the moon-faced Tara:
naivaṅ lakṣmaṇa! vaktavyō nāyaṅ paruṣamarhati.

harīṇāmīśvaraśśrōtuṅ tava vaktrādviśēṣataḥ৷৷4.35.2৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, ayam this, harīṇāmīśvaraḥ king of vanaras, ēvam in that way, na vaktavyaḥ not speak, viśēṣataḥ specially, tava your, vaktrāt your words, paruṣam harsh, śrōtum to listen, nārhati not deserve.

'O Lakshmana! you, in particular, should not speak to the king of vanaras in that manner. He does not deserve to hear from your mouth words which are harsh.
naivākṛtajñassugrīvō na śaṭhō nāpi dāruṇaḥ.

naivānṛtakathō vīra! na jihmaśca kapīśvaraḥ৷৷4.35.3৷৷


vīra O hero, kapīśvaraḥ king of monkeys, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, akṛtajñaḥ ungrateful, na not, śaṭhaḥ deceitful, na not, api even, na not, anṛtakathaḥ one who tells a lie, naiva nor, jihmaḥ ca and crooked, na not.

'O hero! Sugriva, king of monkeys, is not ungrateful or deceitful, He is neither crooked nor false.
upakāraṅ kṛtaṅ vīrō nāpyayaṅ vismṛtaḥ kapiḥ.

rāmēṇa vīra! sugrīvō yadanyairduṣkaraṅ raṇē৷৷4.35.4৷৷


vīra hero, kapiḥ monkey, ayaṅ sugrīvaḥ this Sugriva, raṇē in war, yat such, anyai: by others, duṣkaram difficult, rāmēṇa by Rama, kṛtam has been done, upakāram help, na vismṛtaḥ api and not forget.

'O hero! this warrior Sugriva has not forgotten the help rendered by Rama in combat which was difficult (to win).
rāmaprasādātkīrtiñca kapirājyaṅ ca śāśvatam.

prāptavāniha sugrīvō rumāṅ māṅ ca parantapa! ৷৷4.35.5৷৷


parantapa O scorcher of enemies, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, iha now, rāmaprasādāt by Rama's grace, kīrtiṅ ca fame and, śāśvatam permanent, kapirājyaṅ ca kingdom of monkeys, rumām Ruma, māṅ ca and me, prāptavān attained.

'O scorcher of enemies! it is by Rama's grace that Sugriva has attained fame, the kingdom of monkeys and Ruma and me.
suduḥkhaṅ śayitaḥ pūrvaṅ prāpyēdaṅ sukhamuttamam.

prāptakālaṅ na jānītē viśvāmitrō yathā muniḥ৷৷4.35.6৷৷


pūrvam earlier, suduḥkhaṅ śayitaḥ sleeping unhappily, uttamam best, idam this, sukham happiness, prāpya having obtained, viśvāmitraḥ Visvamitra, muniḥ yathā like the sage, prāptakālam time to attend to his duty, na jānītē I did not know.

'Sleep did not come to him in deep distress in the past, and now that great happiness
has come, he does not realize that it is time to act (search for Sita). He behaves like sage Viswamitra.
ghṛtācyāṅ kila saṅsaktō daśavarṣāṇi lakṣmaṇa.

ahō.manyata dharmātmā viśvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ৷৷4.35.7৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, dharmātmā great self, mahāmuniḥ great sage, viśvāmitraḥ Visvamitra, daśa ten, varṣāṇi years, ghṛtācyām with an apsara Gritachi, saṅsaktaḥ in union, aha one day, amanyata thought, kila indeed.

'O Lakshmana! great sage Visvamitra was in union with an apsara Gritachi for ten years and felt it was just one day indeed!
sa hi prāptaṅ na jānītē kālaṅ kālavidāṅ varaḥ.

viśvāmitrō mahātējāḥ kiṅ punaryaḥ pṛthagjanaḥ৷৷4.35.8৷৷


kālavidām varaḥ a distinguished person among those who know the value of time, mahātējāḥ brilliant, saḥ that, viśvāmitraḥ Visvamitra, prāpta kālam right time, na jānītē did not know, yaḥ he who, pṛthagjanaḥ ordinary man, kiṅ punaḥ what else.

'If the brilliant and the most distinguished of those who knew the value of time did not realise the passing of time, what can be said of an ordinary person?
dēhadharmaṅ gatasyāsya pariśrāntasya lakṣmaṇa!.

avitṛptasya kāmēṣu kāmaṅ kṣantumihārhasi৷৷4.35.9৷৷


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, dēhadharmaṅ gatasya attending to physical needs, pariśrāntasya tired person, kāmēṣu in lust, avitṛptasya finding no satisfaction, asya his, kāmam love, iha now, kṣantum to pardon, arhasi should.

'O Lakshmana! you should pardon him since he is not yet satisfied, though tired, with the struggle for the fulfilment of his sensual pleasures.
na ca rōṣavaśaṅ tāta! gantumarhasi lakṣmaṇa!.

niścayārthamavijñāya sahasā prākṛtō yathā৷৷4.35.10৷৷


tāta! O dear, lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, niścayārtham true meaning, avijñāya not knowing, prākṛtō yathā like an ordinary man, sahasā rashly, rōṣavaśam being angry, gantum to be, na arhasi is not proper.

'O dear Lakshmana! not knowing the true intention of Sugriva, it is not proper for you to be rashly angry like an ordinary man.
sattvayuktā hi puruṣāstvadvidhāḥ puruṣarṣabha!.

avimṛśya na rōṣasya sahasā yānti vaśyatām৷৷4.35.11৷৷


puruṣarṣabha! O bull among men, sattvayuktāḥ people with right vision, tvadvidhāḥ people like you, puruṣāḥ men, avimṛśya not thinking rightly, sahasā rashly, rōṣasya of anger, vaśyatām to become, na yānti do not get.

'O bull among men! men with right vision like you do not become angry instantly without right thinking.
prasādayē tvāṅ dharmajña! sugrīvārthē samāhitā.

mahānrōṣasamutpanna ssaṅrambhastyajyatāmayam৷৷4.35.12৷৷


dharmajña! knower of righteousness, samāhitā a well-composed woman, sugrīvārthē for the sake of Sugriva, tvām you, prasādayē I appease you, rōṣasamutpannaḥ arising out of this anger, mahān great, ayam this, saṅrambhaḥ agitation, tyajyatām give up.

'O Lakshmana, knower of dharma, give up your agitation arising out of great anger. Be composed for the sake of Sugriva.
rumāṅ māṅ kapi rājyaṅ ca dhanadhānyavasūni ca.

rāmapriyārthaṅ sugrīvastyajēditi matirmama৷৷4.35.13৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāmapriyārtham for Rama's pleasure, rumām Ruma, māṅ me, kapirājyam monkey- kingdom, dhanadhānyavasūni ca wealth, grain and other treasures, tyajēt will renounce, iti this is, mama my, matiḥ feeling in mind.

'I feel Sugriva should (is prepared to) renounce the monkey-kingdom, wealth, grains and other treasures and even Ruma and me for the pleasure of Rama.
samānēṣyati sugrīva ssītayā saha rāghavam.

śaśāṅkamiva rōhiṇyā nihatvā rāvaṇaṅ raṇē৷৷4.35.14৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, raṇē in war, hatvā having killed, rāvaṇaṅ Ravana, śaśāṅkam the Moon, rōhiṇyā iva like with Rohini, rāghavam Rama, sītayā saha with Sita, samānēṣyati will make them meet.

'Killing Ravana in war, Sugriva will restore Sita soon to Rama.Rama will join Sita like Moon joins Rohini.
śatakōṭisahasrāṇi laṅkāyāṅ kila rākṣasāḥ.

āyutāni ca ṣaṭtriṅśatsahasrāṇi śatāni ca৷৷4.35.15৷৷


laṅkāyām at Lanka, rākṣasāḥ demons, śatakōṭisahasrāṇi a hundred thousand crores, ṣaṭtriṅśat thirtysix times, āyutāni ca ten thousand/myriads, sahasrāṇi thousands, śatāni ca and hundreds.

'The number of demons in Lanka is reported to be a hundred thousand crore, three lakh, ninetynine thousand and six hundred. (Note: Indian tradition has numbers up to eighteen digits. One hundred thousand crores is equal to a 'mahapadma' which has thirteen digits. The number described here is 1000000399600.)
ahatvā tāṅśca durdharṣānrākṣasānkāmarūpiṇaḥ.

na śakyō rāvaṇō hantuṅ yēna sā maithilī hṛtā৷৷4.35.16৷৷


durdharṣān unassailable, kāmarūpiṇaḥ who can assume any form at will, tān them, rākṣasān demons, ahatvā without killing, yēna by whomsoever, sā she, maithilī Maithili, hṛtā stolen, rāvaṇa: Ravana, hantum to kill, na śakyaḥ not possible.

'It is not possible to kill Ravana who has stolen Sita without killing those unassailable demons who can assume any form at their will.
tē na śakyā raṇē hantumasahāyēna lakṣmaṇa!.

rāvaṇaḥ krūrakarmā ca sugrīvēṇa viśēṣataḥ৷৷4.35.17৷৷


lakṣmaṇa! O Lakshmana, tē those, krūrakarmā evil-doer, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, asahāyēna without any help, raṇē in war, hantum to kill, na śakyāḥ not possible, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, viśēṣataḥ specially.

'O Lakshmana! moreover it is not possible for Sugriva alone to kill the wicked Ravana without the help of the monkeys.
ēvamākhyātavānvālī sa hyabhijñō harīśvaraḥ.

āgamastu na mē vyaktaśśravāttasmādbravīmyaham৷৷4.35.18৷৷


vālī Vali, ēvam in that way, ākhyātavān gave an account, saḥ that, harīśvaraḥ lord of monkeys, abhijñaḥ hi a well informed person, āgamaḥ source, mē to myself, na vyaktaḥ not known, tasmāt therefore, śravāt from what is heard, aham I, bravīmi I am speaking.

Vali, the well-informed lord of the monkeys, has given an account of the demons. The source of the account is not known to me.Therefore I am speaking from what I have heard.
tvatsahāyanimittaṅ vai prēṣitā haripuṅgavāḥ.

ānētuṅ vānarānyuddhē subahūnhariyūdhapān৷৷4.35.19৷৷


tat then, yuddhē in war, tvat sahāyanimittam for helping you, hariyūdhapān troops of monkeys, subahūn in multitudes, vānarān monkeys, ānētum to bring, haripuṅgavāḥ leaders of monkeys, prēṣitāḥ sent.

'Monkey chiefs have been sent to bring multitudes of monkey leaders to help you in the battle.
tāṅśca pratīkṣamāṇō.yaṅ vikrāntātsumahābalān.

rāghavasyārthasidhyarthaṅ na niryāti harīśvaraḥ৷৷4.35.20৷৷


vikrāntāṅ powerful, ayam this, harīśvaraḥ Sugriva, mahābalān strong, tān them, rāghavasya for Rama's, arthasidhyartham to accomplish his task, pratīkṣamāṇaḥ awaiting, na niryāti not yet started.

'Sugriva is awaiting the arrival of the powerful and strong vanaras without whose help he cannot accomplish Rama's task.Therefore he has not yet started (the search).
kṛtā tu saṅsthā saumitrē! sugrīvēṇa purā yathā.

adya tairvānaraissarvairāgantavyaṅ mahābalaiḥ৷৷4.35.21৷৷


saumitrē! O Suamitri, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, purā earlier, saṅsthā promulgated an ordinance, yathā like that, kṛtā is ordered by, mahābalaiḥ mighty, sarvaiḥ by all, taiḥ them, vānaraiḥ by vanaras, adya now, āgantavyam should be reaching.

'O Lakshmana! since Sugriva has already promulgated an ordinance to all the mighty vanaras, they should be all arriving by now.
ṛkṣakōṭisahasrāṇi gōlāṅgūlaśatāni ca.

adya tvāmupayāsyanti jahi kōpamarindama.

kōṭyō.nēkāstu kākutstha! kapīnāṅ dīptatējasām৷৷4.35.22৷৷


arindama subduer of enemies, kākutstha Lakshmana, adya now, ṛkṣakōṭisahasrāṇi thousands of crores of bears, gōlāṅgūlaśatāni hundreds of golangulas (monkeys with long tails like those of cows), dīptatējasām of fiery spirit, kapīnām of monkeys, anēkāḥ many, kōṭyaḥ crores, tvām your, upayāsyanti will attend on you, kōpam anger, jahi give up.

tava hi mukhamidaṅ nirīkṣya kōpāt

kṣatajanibhē nayanē nirīkṣamāṇāḥ.

harivaravanitā na yānti śāntiṅ

prathamabhayasya hi śaṅkitāstu sarvāḥ৷৷4.35.23৷৷


harivaravanitāḥ wives of foremost of monkeys, tava your, idam this, mukham face, nirīkṣya on seeing, kōpāt from anger, kṣatajanibhē resembling blood, nayanē eyes, nirīkṣamāṇāḥ looking at the eyes, śāntim peace, na yānti not able to, sarvāḥ all, prathamabhayasya of the earlier fear, śaṅkitāstu suspecting.

'Looking at your angry countenance with blood-red eyes, the wives of the foremost of monkeys are frightened by the possibility of similar danger of the past (of Vali's death) and do not find peace of mind.'
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē pañcatriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfifth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
