[Lakshmana meets Sugriva --- reminds him of his promise to Rama.]

tamapratihataṅ kruddhaṅ praviṣṭaṅ puruṣarṣabham.

sugrīvō lakṣmaṇaṅ dṛṣṭvā babhūva vyathitēndriyaḥ৷৷4.34.1৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, apratihatam who could not be obstructed, praviṣṭam entered, kruddham angry one, puruṣarṣabham a bull among men, taṅ him, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, dṛṣṭvā seeing, vyathitēndriyaḥ senses depressed, babhūva became.

On seeing the angry Lakshmana, a bull among men, who could not be obstructed, enter in, Sugriva was disturbed.
kruddhaṅ niśśvasamānaṅ taṅ pradīptamiva tējasā.

bhrāturvyasanasantaptaṅ dṛṣṭvā daśarathātmajam৷৷4.34.2৷৷

utpapāta hariśrēṣṭhō hitvā sauvarṇamāsanam.

mahānmahēndrasya yathā svalaṅkṛta iva dhvajaḥ৷৷4.34.3৷৷


kruddham enraged, niśśvasamānam sighing heavily, tējasā lustrous, pradīptamiva as if glowing, bhrātuḥ brother's, vyasanasantaptam burning with sorrow, tam him, daśarathātmajam son of Dasaratha, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, hariśrēṣṭha: best of vanaras, sauvarṇam golden, āsanam seat, hitvā quitting, mahēndrasya Mahendra's, dhvajaḥ banner, svalaṅkṛtaḥ decorated, mahān great, iva like, utpapāta jumped up.

Seeing enraged Lakshmana, son of Dasaratha, sighing heavily, glowing like bright fire burning with the sorrow of Rama, Sugriva jumped out of his seat quitting the decorated golden throne just as Indra's decorated banner is raised up suddenly.
utpatantamanūtpētū rumāprabhṛtayaḥ striyaḥ.

sugrīvaṅ gaganē pūrṇacandraṅ tārāgaṇā iva৷৷4.34.4৷৷


rumāprabhṛtayaḥ Ruma and others, striyaḥ women, utpatantam jumped up, sugrīvam Sugriva, gaganē in the sky, pūrṇam full, candram Moon, tārāgaṇā cluster of stars, iva like, anūtpētu: jumped up.

As soon as Sugriva jumped up ,Ruma and other women-folk rose to their feet like the clusters of stars around the full-Moon in the sky.
saṅraktanayanaḥ śrīmānvicacāla kṛtāñjaliḥ.

babhūvāvasthitastatra kalpavṛkṣō mahāniva৷৷4.34.5৷৷


saṅraktanayanaḥ red-eyed, śrīmān prosperous, kṛtāñjaliḥ offered salutations with folded palms, vicacāla was shaken, mahān great, kalpavṛkṣaḥ iva like the Kalpa tree, tatra there, avasthitaḥ stood, babhūva became.

With eyes red as blood through drunkenness,prosperous Sugriva was shaken like the Kalpa tree.He stood there and offered salutations(to Lakshmana) with folded hands.
rumādvitīyaṅ sugrīvaṅ nārīmadhyagataṅ sthitam.

abravīllakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhassatāraṅ śaśinaṅ yathā৷৷4.34.6৷৷


satāram surrounded by stars, śaśinaṅ yathā like the Moon, rumādvitīyam along with Ruma, nārīmadhyagatam surrounded by women, sthitam who stood, sugrīvam Sugriva, kruddhaḥ infuriated, lakṣmaṇaḥ to Lakshmana, abravīt said.

Looking at Sugriva surrounded by Ruma and other women like the Moon among stars, infuriated Lakshmana said;
sattvābhijanasampannassānukrōśō jitēndriyaḥ.

kṛtajñassatyavādī ca rājā lōkē mahīyatē৷৷4.34.7৷৷


sattvābhijanasampannaḥ heir of a noble clan, sānukrōśaḥ compassionate, jitēndriyaḥ one who has controlled his senses, kṛtajñaḥ grateful person, satyavādī ca one who is truthful, rājā king, lōkē in the world, mahīyatē will excel.

'Only a king who is an heir to a noble family, compassionate, and self-controlled, grateful and truthful excels in the world.
yastu rājā sthitō.dharmē mitrāṇāmupakāriṇām.

mithyā pratijñāṅ kurutē kō nṛśaṅsatarastataḥ৷৷4.34.8৷৷


yaḥ whoever, rājā a king, adharmē in unrighteous path, sthitaḥ adopts, upakāriṇām to his benefactors, mithyā false, pratijñām promise, kurutē makes, tataḥ then, nṛśaṅsataraḥ more malicious, kaḥ what

'Which king can be more malicious than the one who makes false promises and adopts an unrighteous path towards those who helped him?
śatamaśvānṛtē hanti sahasraṅ tu gavānṛtē.

ātmānaṅ svajanaṅ hanti puruṣaḥ puruṣānṛtē৷৷4.34.9৷৷


puruṣaḥ man, aśvānṛtē tells a lie about a horse, śatam hundred, hanti kills, gavānṛtē tells a lie about a cow, sahasram thousand, puruṣānṛtē a lie about a man, ātmānam himself, svajanam his own people, hanti kills.

'If a man tells a lie about a horse, he commits the sin of killing a hundred horses. If one tells a lie about a cow, he shares the sin of killing a thousand cows. If one tells a lie about a man, it is equal to the sin of killing oneself and his own people.
pūrvaṅ kṛtārthō mitrāṇāṅ na tatpratikarōti yaḥ.

kṛtaghnassarvabhūtānāṅ sa vadhyaḥ plavagēśvara!৷৷4.34.10৷৷


plagēśvara O lord of monkeys, pūrvam first, kṛtārthaḥ is fulfilled, yaḥ whoever, mitrāṇām to the
friends, tat that, pratikarōti does not help in turn, kṛtaghnaḥ an ungrateful one, saḥ he, sarvabhūtānām to all beings, vadhyaḥ deserves to be killed.

'O lord of monkeys! he who, having accomplished his task first with the help of his friend, does not return the help is ungrateful. Such a person deserves to be killed.It applies to all beings.
gītō.yaṅ brahmaṇā ślōka ssarvalōkanamaskṛtaḥ.

dṛṣṭvā kṛtaghnaṅ kruddhēna tannibōdha plavaṅgama!৷৷4.34.11৷৷


plavaṅgama O lord of the monkeys, kṛtaghnam an ungrateful one, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, kruddhēna by an outraged, brahmaṇā by a brahmin, sarvalōkanamaskṛtaḥ revered by all the worlds, ayam this, ślōkaḥ verse, gītaḥ is sung, tat that, nibōdha listen.

'O lord of the monkeys here is a verse worthy of appreciation by all the worlds, sung by a brahmin, when he saw an ungrateful person. Listen:
brahmaghnē ca surāpē ca cōrē bhagnavratē tathā.

niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhi: kṛtaghnē nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ৷৷4.34.12৷৷


brahmaghnē one who kills a brahmin, surāpē ca and a drunkard, cōrē by thieves, tathā similarly, bhagnavratē one who violates sacred vows, sadbhi: pious men, niṣkṛtiḥ expiation, vihitā is provided, kṛtaghnē for an ungrateful one, niṣkṛtiḥ such an atonement, nāsti not there.

'There is expiation for one who kills a brahmin, a drunkard, a thief and a violator of sacred vows. But there is no atonement for an ungrateful man.'
anāryastvaṅ kṛtaghnaśca mithyāvādī ca vānara!.

pūrvaṅ kṛtārthō rāmasya na tatpratikarōṣi yat৷৷4.34.13৷৷


vānara! O monkey!, pūrvam in the past, kṛtārthaḥ one whose object is achieved, tvam you, yat since, rāmasya Rama's, na pratikarōṣi not helped in return, tat that, anāryaḥ ignoble one,
kṛtaghnaśca ungrateful, mithyāvādī ca one who is a liar, nanu you are surely.

'O monkey! you have already achieved your objective (with the help of Rama) but have not helped Rama in return. You are surely an ignoble and ungrateful liar.
nanu nāma kṛtārthēna tvayā rāmasya vānara.

sītāyā mārgaṇē yatnaḥ kartavyaḥ kṛtamicchatā৷৷4.34.14৷৷


vānara monkey, kṛtārthēna by a grateful one, rāmasya Rama's, kṛtam task, icchatā intending, tvayā by you, sītāyāḥ Sita's, mārga in search, yatnaḥ attempt, nanu nāma kartavyaḥ it should be taken up indeed.

'O monkey, if you are grateful to Rama you should wish to search for Sita. Indeed, you should make efforts to take it up.
sa tvaṅ grāmyēṣu bhōgēṣu saktō mithyāpratiśravaḥ.

na tvāṅ rāmō vijānītē sarpaṅ maṇḍūkarāviṇam৷৷4.34.15৷৷


mithyāpratiśravaḥ who has made false promises, saḥ he, tvam you, grāmyēṣu bhōgēṣu worldy pleasures, saktaḥ engaged in, rāmaḥ Rama, tvām you, maṇḍūkarāviṇam croaking like a frog, sarpam serpent, na vijānītē did not identify.

'You have failed to keep your word. You are engaged in worldly pleasures. Rama did not know that you are a serpent croaking like a frog.
mahābhāgēna rāmēṇa pāpaḥ karuṇavēdinā.

harīṇāṅ prāpitō rājyaṅ tvaṅ durātmā mahātmanā৷৷4.34.16৷৷


mahābhāgēna by the illustrious, mahātmanā by the great self, karuṇavēdinā by the compassionate, rāmēṇa by Rama, pāpaḥ sinner, durātmā evil-minded, tvam you, harīṇām monkeys', rājyam kingdom, prāpitaḥ granted.

'Rama is illustrious, compassionate and great. He has granted the kingdom to you, to one who is a sinner and an evil-minded person.
kṛtaṅ cēnnābhijānīṣē rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ.

sadyastvaṅ niśitairbhāvārhatō drakṣyasi vālinam৷৷4.34.17৷৷


tvam you, akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ of a man who accomplishes a task with ease, rāmasya of Rama, kṛtam help, nābhijānīṣē yadi if you did not recognise, sadyaḥ presently, niśitaiḥ by sharp ones, bāṇaiḥ with arrows, hataḥ kill, vālinam to Vali, drakṣyasē you may see.

'If you do not recognise the help of Rama who can accomplish any deed with ease, you will be killed with my sharp arrows and meet Vali (in heaven).
na ca saṅkucitaḥ panthā yēna vālī hatō gataḥ.

samayē tiṣṭha sugrīva! mā vālipathamanvagāḥ৷৷4.34.18৷৷


sugrīva! O Sugriva, samayē by agreement, tiṣṭha stand by, hataḥ killed, vālī Vali, yēna by whichever path, gataḥ gone, panthāḥ path, na ca saṅkucitaḥ is not a narrow one, vālipatham the path of Vali, mā anvagāḥ do not follow him.

'O Sugriva! the path by which Vali went is not closed.I wish you do not follow him. You stand by the promise made.
na nūnamikṣvākuvarasya kārmuka

cyutān śarānpaśyasi vajra sannibhān.

tata ssukhaṅ nāma niṣēvasē sukhī.

na rāmakāryaṅ manasā.pyavēkṣasē৷৷4.34.19৷৷


nūnam surely, ikṣvākuvarasya of the renowned among the Ikshvaku race, kārmuka bow, vajrasannibhān comparable to a thunderbolt, cyutān released, śarān arrows, na paśyasi you do not see, tataḥ
then, sukhī without fear, sukham a happy, niṣēvasē nāma you are resorting to, manasāpi even in your mind, rāmakāryam Rama's work, na avēkṣasē not thinking.

'You have not seen the thunderbolt-like arrows released from the bow of Rama, the renowned prince of the Ikshvaku race. Therefore you are resorting to enjoyment without any fear and have not given thought to Rama's work.'
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē catustriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirty-fourth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
