[Lakshmana enters Sugriva's palace --- Sugriva requests Tara to pacify Lakshmana.]

atha pratisamādiṣṭō lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā.

pravivēśa guhāṅ ghōrāṅ kiṣkindhāṅ rāmaśāsanāt৷৷4.33.1৷৷


atha and then, pratisamādiṣṭaḥ having been called in, paravīrahā slayer of enemies, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, rāmaśāsanāt as per Rama's command, ghōrām frightful in appearance, guhām cave, kiṣkindhām Kishkinda, pravivēśa entered.

Instructed by Rama, and having been permitted, Lakshmana, the slayer of enemies entered the frightful cave of Kishkinda.
dvārasthā harayastatra mahākāyā mahābalāḥ.

babhūvurlakṣmaṇaṅ dṛṣṭvā sarvē prāñjalaya sthitāḥ৷৷4.33.2৷৷


tatra there, dvārasthāḥ gate-keepers, mahākāyāḥ of huge body, mahābalāḥ mighty, harayaḥ monkeys, sarvē all, lakṣmaṇam at Lakshmana, dṛṣṭvā seeing, prāñjalayaḥ greeted with folded palms, sthitāḥ stood, babhūvuḥ became.

Seeing Lakshmana, the huge and mighty monkey gate-keepers stood at the entrance and greeted him with folded hands.
niśvasantaṅ tu taṅ dṛṣṭvā kruddhaṅ daśarathātmajam.

babhūvurharayastrastā na cainaṅ paryavārayan৷৷4.33.3৷৷


harayaḥ monkeys, niśśvasantam sighing deeply, kruddham angry, daśarathātmajam son of Dasaratha, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, trastāḥ feared, babhūvuḥ became, ēnam him, paryavārayan not surround him.

The monkeys kept away out of fear to see the son of Dasaratha, who was angry and
sighing deeply.
sa tāṅ ratnamayīṅ śrīmāndivyāṅ puṣpitakānanām.

ramyāṅ ratnasamākīrṇāṅ dadarśa mahatīṅ guhām৷৷4.33.4৷৷


śrīmān a bestower of fortune, saḥ he, ratnamayīm inlaid with gems, divyām wonderful, puṣpitakānanām with forest full of flowers, ramyām delighting, ratnasamākīrṇām full of precious stones and gems, tām such, mahatīm mammoth, guhām cave, dadarśa saw.

Lakshmana, the bestower of fortune, saw the mammoth cave inlaid with gems and precious stones and forests full of delightful flowers.
harmyaprāsādasambādhāṅ nānāpaṇyōpaśōbhitām.

sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ puṣpitairupaśōbhitām৷৷4.33.5৷৷


harmyaprāsādasambādhām thronged with elevated mansions and palaces, nānāpaṇyōpaśōbhitām illumined with jewels, sarvakāmaphalaiḥ which satisfied every one's wish, puṣpitaiḥ flowers in bloom, vṛkṣaiḥ by trees, upaśōbhitām splendid.

The palace was thronged with elevated mansions and illumined with jewels of all kinds. The trees were in bloom and the fruits satisfied every one's wish.It was splendid.
dēvagandharvaputraiśca vānaraiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ.

divyamālyāmbaradharai śśōbhitāṅ priyadarśanaiḥ৷৷4.33.6৷৷


dēvagandharvaputraiḥ sons born of gods and gandharvas, kāmarūpibhiḥ by those who could change their form as they wished, divyamālyāmbaradharaiḥ wearing beautiful garlands, priyadarśanaiḥ pleasing in appearance, vānaraiḥ by monkeys, upaśōbhitām very delightful.

The inhabitants of Kishkinda being sons of gods and gandharvas, were of beautiful appearance wearing wonderful garlands. They could change their form at their free
will. They were delightful.
candanāgarupadmānāṅ gandhaissurabhigandhinām.

mairēyāṇāṅ madhūnāṅ ca sammōditamahāpathām৷৷4.33.7৷৷


surabhigandhinām of fragrant unguents, candanāgarupadmānām of sandal, agaru and lotus incenses, madhūnām of various kinds of honey, gandhaiḥ of fine smell, sammōditamahāpathām royal roads filled with happy people.

The royal roads were filled with fragrant unguents, like sandal, agaru and lotus incenses, fine-smelling honey of several kinds and happy inhabitants.
vindhyamērugiriprakhyai: prāsādairnaikabhūmibhiḥ.

dadarśa girinadyaśca vimalāstatra rāghavaḥ৷৷4.33.8৷৷


rāghavaḥ Lakshmana, tatra there, naikabhūmibhi: tall buildings, vindhyamērūgiriprakhyai: like the Vindhya and Meru mountains, prāsādai: buildings, vimalāḥ pure, girinadyaśca mountain streams, dadarśa saw.

Lakshmana saw tall buildings comparable to Vindhya and Meru mountains and pure water flowing from the mountain streams.
aṅgadasya gṛhaṅ ramyaṅ maindasya dvividhasya ca.

gavayasya gavākṣasya gajasya śarabhasya ca৷৷4.33.9৷৷

vidyunmālēśca sampātē ssūryākṣasya hanūmataḥ.

vīrabāhō ssubāhōśca nalasya ca mahātmanaḥ৷৷4.33.10৷৷

kumudasya suṣēṇasya tārajāmbavatōstathā.

dadhivaktrasya nīlasya supāṭalasunētrayōḥ৷৷4.33.11৷৷

ētēṣāṅ kapimukhyānāṅ rājamārgē mahātmanām.

dadarśa gṛhamukhyāni mahāsārāṇi lakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷4.33.12৷৷


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, aṅgadasya Angada's, ramyam beautiful, gṛham home, maindasya Mainda's, ca and, gavayasya Gavaya's, gavākṣasya Gavaksha's, gajasya Gaja's, śarabhasya ca and Sarabha's, vidyunmālēśca Vidyunmala's, sampātēḥ Sampati's, sūryākṣasya Suryaksha's, hanūmataḥ Hanuman's, vīrabāhōḥ Veerabahu's, subāhōśca Subhahu's, mahātmanaḥ of the great, nalasya ca Nala's, kumudasya Kumuda's, suṣēṇasya Sushena's, tathā similarly, tārajāmbavatōḥ Tara's and Jambavan's, dadhivaktrasy of Dadhivaktra's, nīlasya Nila's, supāṭalasunētrayōḥ of Supaatala and Sunetra, ētēṣām of all of them, mahātmanām great ones, kapimukhyānām monkey chiefs, mahāsārāṇi prosperous, dvividasya Dwivida's, gṛhamukhyāni important homes, rājamārgē on the royal road, dadarśa saw.

On the royal road, Lakshmna saw beautiful homes of monkey-chiefs- Angada, Mainda, Dwivida, Gavaya, Gavaksha, Gaja, Sarabha, Vidyunmalin, Sampati, Suryaksha, Hanuman, Veerabahu, Subahu, the great Nala, Kumuda and Sushena. Similarly he saw the homes of Tara and Jambavan, Dadhivaktra, Nila, Supatala and Sunetra. (Tara mentioned here is a male monkey.)
pāṇḍurābhraprakāśāni divyamālyayutāni ca.

prabhūtadhanadhānyāni strīratnai śśōbhitāni ca৷৷4.33.13৷৷


pāṇḍurābhraprakāśāni shining like white clouds, divyamālyayutāni ca with wonderful garlands hanging, prabhūtadhanadhānyāni filled with abundant wealth and grain, strīratnaiḥ with best of women, śōbhitāni ca shining bright.

These homes were shining like white clouds, with wonderful garlands hung on, filled with abundance of wealth, grains and best of females.
pāṇḍurēṇa tu sālēna parikṣiptaṅ durāsadam.

vānarēndragṛhaṅ ramyaṅ mahēndrasadanōpamam৷৷4.33.14৷৷

śuklaiḥ prāsādaśikharaiḥ kailāsaśikharōpamaiḥ.

sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ puṣpitairupaśōbhitam৷৷4.33.15৷৷

mahēndradattaiśśrīmadbhirnīlajīmūtasannibhaiḥ.

divyapuṣpaphalairvṛkṣaiśītacchāyairmanōramaiḥ৷৷4.33.16৷৷

haribhissaṅvṛtadvāraṅ balibhiśśastrapāṇibhiḥ.

sugrīvasya gṛhaṅ ramyaṅ pravivēśa mahābalaḥ.

pāṇḍurēṇa pale white, sālēna with a rampart, parikṣiptam encircling, durāsadam unapproachable, mahēndrasadanōpamam like the abode of Indra, ramyam enchanting, vānarēndragṛham home of the king of monkeys, śuklaiḥ white, kailāsaśikharōpamaiḥ like peaks of Kailasa mountain, prāsādaśikharaiḥ with the tops of mansions, sarvakāmaphalaiḥ with all kinds of fruits to suit the desires, puṣpitaiḥ in bloom, vṛkṣaiḥ trees, upaśōbhitam magnificent, mahēndradattaiḥ gifted by Mahendra, śrīmadbhi: illustrious, nīlajīmūtasannibhaiḥ like dark clouds, divyapuṣpaphalaiḥ with wonderful flowers and fruits, śītacchāyaiḥ with those giving cool shade, manōramaiḥ with most delightful, vṛkṣaiḥ trees, balibhiḥ strong ones, śastrapāṇibhiḥ holding weapons in hands, haribhiḥ monkeys, saṅvṛtadvāram the entrance door surrounded by, divyamālyāvṛtam decorated with wonderful garlands, śubhram white, taptakāñcanatōraṇam decorated with polished golden flowers strung together, ramyam enchanting, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, gṛham abode, mahābalaḥpowerful, saumitri Saumitri, bhāskaraḥ Sun, mahābhramiva like a huge cloud, avāryamāṇaḥ not obstructed by, pravivēśa entered.

The abode of Sugriva was encircled by a white rampart and unapproachable.It was enchanting like the abode of Indra. The mansion tops were like the white peaks of Kailas mountain filled with blossoming trees which could yield all kinds of fruits to suit one's taste. The trees were huge like dark clouds, cool and shady with wonderful flowers in full bloom, the riches gifted by Indra, were delightful. The entrance was guarded by mighty monkeys holding weapons in hand. It had a golden archway at the entrance decorated with wonderful garlands and strings of golden flowers. Saumitri of great prowess entered the rich abode of Sugriva just as the Sun enters huge clouds unobstructed.
sa sapta kakṣyā dharmātmā nānājanasamākulāḥ.

praviśya sumahadgaguptaṅ dadarśāntaḥpuraṅ mahat৷৷4.33.19৷৷

haimarājataparyaṅkairbahubhiśca varāsanaiḥ.

mahārhāstaraṇōpētaistatra tatrōpaśōbhitam৷৷4.33.20৷৷


dharmātmā righteous man, saḥ Lakshmana, nānājanasamākulā: with all kinds of people assembled, sapta seven, kakṣyāḥ enclosures, praviśya having entered through, sumahat huge, guptam protected, mahat great, haimarājataparyaṅkai: with cots made of bright gold and silver, mahārhāstaraṇōpētaiḥ with best of cushions, bahubhi: with costly, varāsanaiśca best of seats, tatra tatra here and there, samāvṛtam covered, antaḥpuram harem, dadarśa saw.

Righteous Lakshmana crossed the seven enclosures filled with different kinds of people and saw a great harem full of several bright gold and silver cots, excellent seats here and there with best of cushions spread.
praviśannēva satataṅ śuśrāva madhurasvaram.

tantrīgītasamākīrṇaṅ samagītapadākṣaram৷৷4.33.21৷৷


praviśannēva as he entered, tantrīgītasamākīrṇam sounds of melodiously tuned string instruments, samagītapadākṣaram with songs worded to metre in different kinds of tune, satatam always, madhurasvaram sweet voices, śuśrāva heard.

As he entered, he heard melodious sounds of string instruments and music worded to metre with different kinds of tunes.
bahvīśca vividhākārā rūpayauvanagarvitāḥ.

striyassugrīvabhavanē dadarśa sumahābalaḥ৷৷4.33.22৷৷


mahābalaḥ powerful man, saḥ he, sugrīvabhavanē in Sugriva's palace, vividhākārāḥ of different forms,
rūpayauvanagarvitāḥ proud of their youth and beauty, bahvīḥ many, striyaḥ women, dadarśa saw, ca and.

Powerful Lakshmana saw many females of different forms proud of their youth and charm at the palace of Sugriva.
dṛṣṭvā.bhijanasampannāścitramālyakṛtasrajaḥ.

phalamālyakṛtavyagrā bhūṣaṇōttamabhūṣitāḥ৷৷4.33.23৷৷

nātṛptānnāpi cāvyagrānnānudāttaparicchadān.

sugrīvānucarāṅścāpi lakṣayāmāsa lakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷4.33.24৷৷


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, abhijanasampannāḥ born of a good race, citramālyakṛtasrajaḥ decorated with colourful garlands, phalamālyakṛtavyagrāḥ engaged in making garlands and arranging fruits, bhūṣaṇōttamabhūṣitāḥ wearing choice ornaments, dṛṣṭvā seeing, nātṛptān not contented, nāpi cā vyagrān who were not busy, nānudāttaparicchadān who were not gentle, sugrīvānucarāṅścāpi attendants of Sugriva, lakṣayāmāsa he saw.

Lakshmana saw women with a good lineage adorned with colourful flower garlands and choicest ornaments engaged in making garlands and arranging fruits. He also saw at Sugriva's palace attendants, gentle, well-dressed, contented and not too busy.
kūjitaṅ nūpurāṇāṅ ca kāñcīnāṅ ninadaṅ tathā.

sanniśamya tata śrīmānsaumitrirlajjitō.bhavat৷৷4.33.25৷৷


tataḥ then, śrīmān illustrious, saumitriḥ Saumithri, nūpurāṇām of anklets, kūjitam tinkling, tathā like-wise, kāñcīnām of bells on the girdles of women, ninadam jingling sound, niśamya on hearing, lajjitaḥ abashed, abhavat felt.

Illustrious Lakshmana felt abashed on hearing the jingling of girdle bells and tinkling of the women's anklets.
rōṣavēgaprakupitaśaśrutvā cābharaṇasvanam.

cakāra jyāsvanaṅ vīrō diśaśśabdēna pūrayan৷৷4.33.26৷৷


vīraḥ hero, ābharaṇasvanam sounds of ornaments, śrutvā on hearing, rōṣavēgaprakupitaḥ lost temper quickly, diśaḥ quarters, śabdēna by the sound, pūrayan while filling, jyāsvanam twang of bow-string, cakāra produced.

On hearing the sounds of ornaments (of females), heroic Lakshmana lost his temper quickly. He pulled his bow-string forcefully in wrath producing frightening sound filling all quarters.
cāritrēṇa mahābāhurapakṛṣṭa ssalakṣmaṇaḥ.

tasthāvēkāntamāśritya rāmakōpasamanvitaḥ৷৷4.33.27৷৷


rāmakōpasamanvitaḥ overtaken by Rama's anger, mahābāhuḥ long-armed hero, saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, cāritrēṇa as per tradition, apakṛṣṭaḥ moved away, ēkāntam lonely place, āśritya went, tasthau stood.

Aware of the anger of Rama (who likes it not), the long-armed Lakshmana moved away from the spot (abstained from entering private apartments) as per tradition, receded to a lonely place and stood.
tēna cāpasvanēnātha sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ.

vijñāyā.gamanaṅ trasta ssañcacāla varāsanāt৷৷4.33.28৷৷


atha then, plavagādhipaḥ lord of monkeys, saḥ sugrīvaḥ that Sugriva, tēna by that, cāpasvanēna sound of the bow, āgamanam arrival, vijñāya sensing, trastaḥ feared, varāsanāt from the throne, sañcacāla alighted at once.

Then, sensing the arrival of Lakshmana, by the sound of his bow string, Sugriva the lord of vanaras, alighted at once from the throne.
aṅgadēna yathā mahyaṅ purastātprativēditam.

suvyaktamēṣa samprāpta ssaumitrirbhrātṛvatsalaḥ৷৷4.33.29৷৷


purastāt earlier, aṅgadēna by Angada, mahyam to me, yathā as, prativēditam announced, bhrātṛvatsalaḥ loving brother, ēṣaḥ this, saumitriḥ Saumitri, samprāptaḥ has come, suvyaktam it is true.

'Truly Saumitri, the loving brother of Rama has arrived as announced by Angada earlier'.
aṅgadēna samākhyātaṅ jyāsvanēna ca vānaraḥ.

bubudhē lakṣmaṇaṅ prāptaṅ mukhaṅ cāsyavyaśuṣyata৷৷4.33.30৷৷


aṅgadēna by Angada, jyāsvanēna ca by the twang, samākhyātaḥ proclaimed by, vānaraḥ monkeys, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, prāptam who arrived, bubudhē knew, asya his, mukhaṅ ca the mouth, aśuṣyata parched.

As proclaimed by Angada and also from the sound of the twang, Sugriva knew about the arrival of Lakshmana. His mouth parched (with fear).
tatastārāṅ hariśrēṣṭhassugrīvaḥ priyadarśanām.

uvāca hitamavyagrastrāsa sambhrāntamānasaḥ৷৷4.33.31৷৷


tataḥ then, trāsa sambhrāntamānasaḥ awe-struck mind, hariśrēṣṭhaḥ the best of vanaras, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, priyadarśanām pleasing to see, tārām Tara, hitam good words, avyagram: clearly, uvāca said.

Then Sugriva, the best of monkeys got agitated at heart out of fear. He saw the pleasing Tara and said to her these good words clearly:
kinnu tatkāraṇaṅ subhru! prakṛtyā mṛdumānasaḥ.

sarōṣa iva samprāptō yēnāyaṅ rāghavānujaḥ৷৷4.33.32৷৷


subhru! O lady with beautiful eyebrows, prakṛtyā by nature, mṛdumānasaḥ soft-hearted, ayam this person, rāghavānujaḥ Rama's younger brother, yēna since, sarōṣa iva as though angry, samprāptaḥ has come, tatkāraṇam its cause, kiṅ nu what is it?

'O Tara with beautiful eyebrows! this younger brother of Rama is normally soft-hearted. But today he arrived here angry. What could be the reason?
kiṅ paśyasi kumārasya rōṣasthānamaninditē.

na khalvakāraṇē kōpamāharēnnarasattamaḥ৷৷4.33.33৷৷


aninditē O blemshless lady, kumārasya of the prince, rōṣasthānam cause for being angry, kim what? paśyasi do you see, narasattamaḥ great man, akāraṇē without reason, kōpam anger, na āharēt khalu will not display anger.

'O blemishless Tara ! What is the cause of young Lakshmana's anger? Great men do not display anger without reason.
yadasya kṛtamasmābhirbudhyasē kiñcidapriyam.

tadabuddhyā sampradhāryāśu kṣipramarhasi bhāṣitum৷৷4.33.34৷৷


asmābhiḥ by us, asya at him, kiñcit if any, apriyam displeasing, kṛtam done, budhyasē yat if you that way, tat that, āśu quickly, buddhyā with your intellect, sampradhārya considering, kṣiprama immediately, arhasi you ought to, abhibhāṣitum to speak.

'If anything displeasing has been done by us, you should know and tell me quickly. You ought to speak to him at once.
athavā svayamēvainaṅ draṣṭumarhasi bhāmini!.

vacanai ssāntvayuktaiśca prasādayitumarhasi৷৷4.33.35৷৷


athavā or else, bhāmini lovely lady, ēnam to him, svayamēva yourself personally, draṣṭum to see, arhasi you will, sāntvayuktaiḥ with soothing words, vacanaiḥ by your words, prasādayitum to please
him, arhasi you will.

'O lovely lady! or else, you should see him personally and propitiate him with your soothing words.
tvaddarśana viśuddhātmā na sa kōpaṅ kariṣyati.

na hi strīṣu mahātmānaḥ kvacitkurvanti dāruṇam৷৷4.33.36৷৷


viśuddhātmā he is cleansed by you, saḥ he, tvaddarśana by seeing you, kōpam anger, na kariṣyati will not be, mahātmānaḥ great men, kvacit at any time, strīṣu at women, dāruṇam terrific acts, na kurvanti hi will not be.

'Lakshmana will be clear of all doubts on seeing you and will not be angry. Great men are not harsh to women.
tvayā sāntvairupakrāntaṅ prasannēndriyamānasam.

tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaṅ drakṣyāmyahamarindamam৷৷4.33.37৷৷


sāntvai: with pleasing words, tvayā your, upakrāntam commencing your talk, prasannēndriyamānasam having made him happy at heart, kamalapatrākṣam lotus-petal eye, arindamam a crusher of enemies, aham I, tataḥ then, drakṣyāmi I shall see him.

'Start talking to him with pleasing words and make him happy. Then I shall see Lakshmana with eyes like lotus-petals, a subduer of enemies'.
sā praskhalantī madavihvalākṣī

pralambakāñcīguṇa hēmasūtrā.

salakṣaṇā lakṣmaṇasannidhānaṅ

jagāma tārā namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ৷৷4.33.38৷৷


madavihvalākṣī an intoxicated woman with drunkeneyes, pralambakāñcīguṇahēmasūtrā with long gold string of the girdle hanging, salakṣaṇā bashful of her appearance, namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ her body bent bow, sā tārā that Tara, praskhalantī a faltering woman, lakṣmaṇasannidhānam to the presence of Lakshmna, jagāma went.

Tara, whose eyes were drowsy with drink, whose long gold string of the girdle was hanging loose appeared before Lakshmana with faltering steps and bent low, bashful of her appearance. (It suggests a state of exhaustion after sexual pleasures).
sa tāṅ samīkṣyaiva harīśapantīṅ

tasthāvudāsīnatayā mahātmā.

avāṅmukhō.bhūnmanujēndraputraḥ

strīsannikarṣādvinivṛttakōpaḥ৷৷4.33.39৷৷


mahātmā great man, saḥ he, manujēndraputraḥ son of lord among men, harīśapatnīm monkey king's wife, tām her, samīkṣyaiva observing, ēva by that, udāsīnatayā without any reaction, tasthau waited, strīsannikarṣāt due to the presence of female sex close to him, vinivṛttakōpaḥ his anger controlled, avāṅmukhaḥ turned his face against her, abhūt remained.

Since prince Lakshmana is a great man, he stood with his face down and showing no reaction, controlled his anger due to the presence of a female standing close by.
sā pānayōgādvinivṛttalajjā

dṛṣṭiprasādācca narēndrasūnōḥ.

uvāca tārā praṇayapragalbhaṅ

vākyaṅ mahārthaṅ parisāntvapūrvam৷৷4.33.40৷৷


pānayōgāt in a drunken state, narēndrasūnōḥ of the prince, dṛṣṭiprasādācca by the favour of paying, vinivṛttalajjā shedding bashfulness, sā tārā that Tara, mahārtham good words, parisāntvapūrvam in a pleasing way, praṇayapragalbham with friendly eloquence, vākyam words, uvāca said.

Setting aside her shyness for being in a drunken state, and observing Lakshmana's favourable disposition, she spoke meaningful words in a pleasing manner with friendly eloquence:
kiṅ kōpamūlaṅ manujēndraputra

kastē na santiṣṭhati vāṅnidēśē.

ka śśuṣkavṛkṣaṅ vanamāpatantaṅ

davāgnimāsīdati nirviśaṅkaḥ৷৷4.33.41৷৷


manujēndraputra O son of lord among men, kōpamūlam cause of anger, kim what, tē to you, vāṅnidēśē your word of command, kaḥ who, na santiṣṭhati has stood by, śuṣkavṛkṣam dried pieces of wood, vanam forest, āpatantam advancing, davāgnim forest fire, nirviśaṅkaḥ without fear, āsīdati rests.

'O noble prince! what is the cause of your anger? Who has disrespected your command? Who can approach without fear forest fire rushing towards a thicket of dried pieces of wood?'
sa tasyā vacanaṅ śrutvā sāntvapūrvamaśaṅkitam.

bhūyaḥ praṇayadṛṣṭārthaṅ lakṣmaṇō vākyamabravīt৷৷4.33.42৷৷


saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, sāntvapurvam very pleasantly, bhūyaḥ again, praṇayadṛṣṭārtham said in a friendly way, tasyāḥ vacanam her words, śrutvā having heard, aśaṅkitam without any hesitation, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Having heard Tara's unhesitant submission spoken in a pleasant and friendly manner, Lakshmana replied:
kimayaṅ kāmavṛttastē luptadharmārthasaṅgrahaḥ.

bhartā bhartṛhitē yuktē na cainamavabuddhyasē৷৷4.33.43৷৷


bhartṛhitē in the well-being of your husband, yuktē engaged, tē your, bhartā husband, ayam this, kāmavṛttaḥ impulsive, luptadharmārthasaṅgrahaḥ he lost sight of dharma and artha, kim why, ēnam him, avabuddhyasē you are not able to know.

'O lady, your husband engrossed in sensual pleasures, has lost sight of dharma and artha. Why don't you understand it in the interest of your husband whose well-wisher you are?
na cintayati rājyārthaṅ nāsmān śōkaparāyaṇān.

sāmātyapariṣattārē pānamēvōpasēvatē৷৷4.33.44৷৷


tārē O Tara, sāmātyapariṣat the company of ministers, saḥ he, rājyārtham state affairs, śōkaparāyaṇān stricken by sorrow, asmān seat, na cintayati he does not think, pānamēva only drinking, upasēvatē attending to.

'O Tara! that we are in grief Sugriva does not realize. He is not attending to state affairs. He is only enjoying drinking in the company of ministers.
sa māsāṅścaturaḥ kṛtvā pramāṇaṅ plavagēśvaraḥ.

vyatītāṅ stānmadavyagrō viharannāvabudhyatē৷৷4.33.45৷৷


saḥ plavagēśvaraḥ king of monkeys, caturaḥ four, māsān months, pramāṇam promised, kṛtvā having made, madavyagraḥ addicted to drinks, viharan enjoying, tān those, vyatītān exceeded time, nāvabudhyatē he is not realising.

'The king of monkeys has already spent four months, enjoying drinks. He does not realize that he has flouted his promise.
na hi dharmārthasiddhyarthaṅ pānamēvaṅ praśasyatē.

pānādarthaśca dharmaśca kāmaśca parihīyatē৷৷4.33.46৷৷


dharmārthasiddhyartham for accomplishment of dharma and artha, ēvam that way, pānam drinking, na praśasyatē hi not admirable, pānāt by drinking, arthaśca material wealth, kāmaśca by desire, dharmaśca morals, parihīyatē will be destroyed.

'Drinking this way does not help accomplishment of dharma and artha. It destroys wealth, ambition and righteousness.
dharmalōpō mahāṅstāvatkṛtē hyapratikurvataḥ.

arthalōpaśca mitrasya nāśē guṇavatō mahān৷৷4.33.47৷৷


kṛtē one who does, apratikurvataḥ by not rendering help in return, mahān great, dharmalōpaḥ hi is a violation of dharma, guṇavataḥ of a virtuous, mitrasya friend's, nāśē loss, mahān great, arthalōpaśca loss of wealth, aṅstāvaca will result in destruction.

'Dharma is violated when we help not one who has helped. Loss of a virtuous friend leads to great loss of wealth. It results in destruction.
mitraṅ hyarthaguṇaśrēṣṭhaṅ satyadharmaparāyaṇam.

taddvayaṅ tu parityaktaṅ na tu dharmē vyavasthitam৷৷4.33.48৷৷


satyadharmaparāyaṇam abide in truth and righteousness, mitram friend, arthaguṇaśrēṣṭham who excelled in acquiring artha, tat dvayam both these, parityaktam is given up, dharmē in righteous, na tu vyavasthitam not abiding.

tadēvaṅ prastutē kāryē kāryamasmābhiruttaram.

yatkāryaṅ kāryatattvajñē! tadudāhartumarhasi৷৷4.33.49৷৷


kāryatattvajñē well aware of duty, tat that, prastutē kāryē in this task, ēvam this way, asmābhiḥ by
us, yat such, uttaraṅ in turn, kāryam duty, kāryam task, tvam you, udāhartum to explain, arhasi should.

'You have a strong sense of duty. You ought to tell him his duty and what we should do in this situation.
sā tasya dharmārthasamādhiyuktaṅ

niśamya vākyaṅ madhurasvabhāvam.

tārā gatārthē manujēndrakāryē

viśvāsayuktaṅ tamuvāca bhūyaḥ৷৷4.33.50৷৷


sā tārā that Tara, tasya his, dharmārthasamādhiyuktam a word with proper understanding of dharma and artha, madhurasvabhāvam good by nature, vākyam words, niśamya listening to, gatārthē decisively, manujēndrakāryē the endeavour of Rama, the lord of men, viśvāsayuktam faithfully, tam him, bhūyaḥ again, uvāca spoke.

Tara heard the sweet words of Lakshmana which showed his good understanding of dharma and artha. What she said to him in reply reflects her faith in Sugriva's effort to help Rama's cause:
na kōpakālaḥ kṣitipālaputra

na cāti kōpa ssvajanē vidhēyaḥ.

tvadarthakāmasya janasya tasya

pramādamapyarhasi vīra! sōḍhum৷৷4.33.51৷৷


kṣitipālaputra O prince, kōpakālaḥ to be angry at this time, na not, svajanē in your own people, kōpaḥ anger, na cāti vidhēyaḥ not to indulge, vīra warrior, tvadarthakāmasya of a person desiring to attend to your task, tasya janasya of such people, pramādamapi even a mistake, sōḍhum to hear, arhasi it is proper.

'O prince! this is not the time to get angry with your own people. He (Sugriva) is your friend and wishes to do your work. You should bear with him even if he makes a mistake.
kōpaṅ kathaṅ nāma guṇaprakṛṣṭaḥ

kumāra! kuryādapakṛṣṭasattvē.

kastvadvidhaḥ kōpavaśaṅ hi gacchē-

tsattvāvaruddhastapasaḥ prasūtiḥ৷৷4.33.52৷৷


kumāra! prince, guṇaprakṛṣṭaḥ one who is richly endowed with virtues, apakṛṣṭasattvē whose strength is averted, kōpam anger, kathaṅ nāma how can, kuryāt be entertained, sattvāvaruddhaḥ pre-eminent in virtues, tapasaḥ of penance, prasūtiḥ source, tvadvidhaḥ a man like you, kaḥ who, kōpavaśam under the grip of anger, gacchēt he may lead.

'O prince! how can you, richly endowed with virtues be angry with an inferior person? How can a person like you, pre-eminent in virtues,and a source of great penance fall a victim to anger?
jānāmi rōṣaṅ harivīrabandhō-

rjānāmi kāryasya ca kālasaṅgam.

jānāmi kāryaṅ tvayi yatkṛtaṅ na

staccāpi jānāmi yadatra kāryam৷৷4.33.53৷৷


harivīrabandhōḥ friend of warrior Sugriva, rōṣam anger, jānāmi I know, kāryasya of the work, kālasaṅgam time limit, tvayi your, yat na kṛtam whatever is not done, kāryam work, jānāmi I know, atra in this regard, yat whatever, kāryam task, taccāpi done by you, jānāmi is known to me.

'I know about the anger of (Rama), the friend of Sugriva. I am aware of the time limit set for his work. I am aware of our omissions in this regard. I also know about the
mission.
taccāpi jānāmi yathaviṣahyaṅ

balaṅ naraśrēṣṭha! śarīrajasya.

jānāmi yasmiṅśca janē.vabaddhaṅ

kāmēna sugrīvamasaktamadya৷৷4.33.54৷৷


naraśrēṣṭha O best of men, śarīrajasya of passion born out of body, balam strength, yathā as such, aviṣahyam irresistible, taccāpi and further, jānāmi I know, yasmin in whomsoever, janē person, sugrīvam Sugriva, asaktam not interested, adya now, kāmēna out of passion, avabaddham bound to, jānāmi known to me.

'O Lakshmana! I am aware of the irresistible strength of lust born out of the body. I am aware of Sugriva's indifference to his duty due to his passion with whomsoever it be.
na kāmatantrē tava buddhirasti

tvaṅ vai yathā manyuvaśaṅ prapannaḥ.

na dēśakālau hi na cārthadharmā-

vavēkṣatē kāmaratirmanuṣyaḥ৷৷4.33.55৷৷


tvam you, yathā this way, manyuvaśam under the grip of anger, prapannaḥ reached, tava your, buddhi:mind, kāmatantrē in matters of carnal pleasure, nāsti not, kāmaratiḥ one who is immersed in sensual pleasures, manuṣyaḥ man, dēśakālau time and place, na avēkṣatē not see, arthadharmau ca artha and dharma, na not.

'You are under the grip of anger and your mind is not involved in carnal desire. One who is engaged in sensual pleasures does not reckon time and place, nor does he consider artha and dharma.
taṅ kāmavṛttaṅ mama sannikṛṣṭaṅ

kāmābhiyōgācca nivṛttalajjam.

kṣamasva tāvatparavīrahanta-

stvadbhrātaraṅ vānaravaṅśanātham৷৷4.33.56৷৷


paravīrahantaḥ slayer of enemy heroes, kāmavṛttam a person of (unrestrained) passion, mama to me, sannikṛṣṭam being nearby, kāmābhiyōgāt due to involvement in sports of love, nivṛttalajjam without a sense of shame, tvadbhrātaram your brother like, vānaravaṅśanātham head of vanara family, tam him, kṣamasva pardon, tāva so far, so much.

'O slayer of enemy heroes! pardon Sugriva, the lord of vanara clan, who is to you a brother. He is here indulging in sports of love with me. He has no sense of shame about his passion.
maharṣayō dharmatapō.bhikāmāḥ

kāmānukāmāḥ pratibaddhamōhāḥ.

ayaṅ prakṛtyā capalaḥ kapistu

kathaṅ na sajjēta sukhēṣu rājā৷৷4.33.57৷৷


dharmatapō.bhikāmāḥ committed to dharma and austere practices, maharṣayaḥ sages, kāmānukāmāḥ passionate, pratibaddhamōhāḥ one who is deluded by sensual gratification, kapiḥ monkey, prakṛtyā by nature, capalaḥ unsteady, ayaṅ rājā this king, sukhēṣu for pleasure, katham how, na sajjēta can he not be involved?

'Even sages committed to piety and austerity are sometimes deluded by sensual gratification. He is a king and a monkey who is fickle by nature. How can he be not tempted by sensual pleasures'?
ityēvamuktvā vacanaṅ mahārthaṅ

sā vānarī lakṣmaṇamapramēyam.

puna ssakhēdaṅ madavihvalañca

bharturhitaṅ vākyamidaṅ babhāṣē৷৷4.33.58৷৷


madavihvalañca overcome by drunkenness, sā that, vānarī female monkey, apramēyam unfathomable, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, ityēvam in this way, mahārtham very meaningful, vacanam these words, uktvā spoken, punaḥ again, sakhēlam playful, bhartuḥ husband, hitam good, idaṅ vākyam these words, babhāṣē expressed.

Overcome by drunkenness, Tara once again spoke to Lakshmana of unfathomable prowess, in a meaningful way keeping in view the welfare of her playful and drunken lord:
udyōgastu cirājñapta ssugrīvēṇa narōttama!.

kāmasyāpi vidhēyēna tavārthapratisādhanē৷৷4.33.59৷৷


narōttama best of men!, kāmasya by sense pleasures, vidhēyēnāpi although overpowered, sugrīvēṇa Sugriva, tava your, arthapratisādhanē to accomplish your task, udyōgaḥ efforts, cirājñaptaḥ is ordered long ago.

'O best of men! although overpowered by sense pleasures, Sugriva has already initiated efforts for the accomplishment of your work.
āgatā hi mahāvīryā harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ.

kōṭīśatasahasrāṇi nānānaganivāsinaḥ৷৷4.33.60৷৷


mahāvīryā: great warriors, kāmarūpiṇaḥ those who can assume any form they desire, nānānaganivāsinaḥ residing at different mountains, kōṭīśatasahasrāṇi hundreds and thousands of crores, harayaḥ monkeys, āgatāḥ hi have arrived.

'O great warrior! monkeys residing at different mountains who can assume any form
they like have arrived in hundreds and thousands of crores.
tadāgaccha mahābāhō! cāritraṅ rakṣitaṅ tvayā.

acchalaṅ mitrabhāvēna satāṅ dārāvalōkanam৷৷4.33.61৷৷


mahābāhō long-armed one, tat so, āgaccha come in, tvayā by you, cāritram character, rakṣitam is guarded, satām of the pious people, mitrabhāvēna with friendly feeling, dārāvalōkanam seeing the wife, acchalam not a deception.

'O long-armed one ! come in. You have been standing out guarding your character. It is not a mistake to see the wife of a pious person with a friendly feeling.
tārayā cābhyanujñātastvarayā cāpi cōditaḥ.

pravivēśa mahābāhurabhyantaramarindamaḥ৷৷4.33.62৷৷


mahābāhuḥ strong-armed, arindamaḥ subduer of enemies, tārayā ca by Tara also, abhyanujñātaḥ permitted, tvarayā cāpi quickly, cōditaḥ thinking, abhyantaram harem, pravivēśa entered.

Strong-armed Lakshmana, a subduer of enemies, permitted by Tara entered the harem immediately (thinking of the urgency of the task).
tata ssugrīvamāsīnaṅ kāñcanē paramāsanē.

mahārhāstaraṇōpētē dadarśādityasannibham৷৷4.33.63৷৷

divyābhaṇacitrāṅgaṅ divyarūpaṅ yaśasvinam.

divyamālyāmbaradharaṅ mahēndramiva durjayam৷৷4.33.64৷৷

divyābharaṇamālābhiḥ pramadābhi ssamāvṛtam.

saṅrabdhatararaktākṣō babhūvāntakasannibhaḥ৷৷4.33.65৷৷


tataḥ then, mahārhāstaraṇōpētē strewn with fine cushions, kāñcanē on a golden, paramāsanē on a grand throne, āsīnam seated, ādityasannibham like the Sun god, divyābharaṇacitrāṅgam decorated with excellent ornaments, divyarūpam heavenly in appearance, yaśasvinam famous, divyamālyāmbaradharam adorned with beautiful garlands, mahēndramiva like the lord of gods, durjayam like one who is difficult to be conquered, divyābharaṇamālyābhiḥ adorned with excellent ornaments, garlands and clothes, pramadābhiḥ by women decked with, samāvṛtam surrounded, sugrīvam Sugriva, dadarśa saw, saṅrabdhatararaktākṣaḥ bewildered with eyes turned red, nibhaḥ resembling, babhūva appeared, antakasannibhaḥ like Yama the god of death.

Lakshmana saw famous Sugriva, difficult to be conquered, seated on a golden throne strewn around with cushions, decorated with ornaments of different colours, endearing in appearance, decked with beautiful garlands and clothes. He was surrounded by women adorned with most fascinating ornaments and garlands. Bewildered at the sight, Lakshmana's eyes turned red in anger. He appeared like Yama, lord of death.
rumāṅ tu vīra parirabhya gāḍhaṅ

varāsanasthō varahēmavarṇaḥ.

dadarśa saumitrimadīnasattvaṅ

viśālanētrassuviśālanētram৷৷4.33.66৷৷


rumām Ruma, gāḍham tightly, parirabhya embracing, varāsanasthaḥ seated on a great throne, varahēmavarṇaḥ of golden complexion, viśālanētraḥ large-eyed, vīraḥ warrior, saḥ Sugriva, adīnasattvam in a jovial mood, saumitrim Saumitri, dadarśa saw.

The large-eyed warrior Sugriva of golden complexion was seated on an excellent throne embracing Ruma tightly.He saw large-eyed Saumitri in a jovial mood.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē trayastriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtythird sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana compsed by sage Vamiki.
