[Sugriva's anxiety to know the reason for Lakshmana's anger --- Hanuman persuades Sugriva to act.]

aṅgadasya vacaśśrutvā sugrīvassacivaissaha.

lakṣmaṇaṅ kupitaṅ śrutvā mumōcāsanamātmavān4.32.1৷৷


ātmavān prudent, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, sacivaiḥ saha with his counsellors, aṅgadasya Angada's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā heard, lakṣmaṇam of Lakshmana's, kupitam an angry man, śrutvā heard, āsanam seat, mumōca started

On hearing about Lakshmana's anger from Angada, prudent Sugriva consulted his counsellors.
sacivānabravīdvākyaṅ niścitya gurulāghavam.

mantrajñānmantrakuśalō mantrēṣu pariniṣṭhitān4.32.2৷৷


mantrakuśalaḥ well versed in counsel, mantrēṣu in counselling, pariniṣṭhitān highly skilled in secret assessment, saḥ he, gurulāghavam considering the merits and demerits, niścitya deciding, mantrajñān intelligent ministers, tān them, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Sugriva, being skilled in secret assessment of matters, considering the merits and demerits, spoke to his council of ministers capable of intelligent counselling:
na mē durvyāhṛtaṅ kiñcinnāpi mē duranuṣṭhitam.

lakṣmaṇō rāghavabhrātā kruddhaḥ kimiti cintayē4.32.3৷৷


mē of me, kiñcit a little, na durvyāhṛtam not uttered any harsh or arrogant word, mē of me, api duranuṣṭhitam indeed no wrong deed is done, rāghava bhrātā Rama's brother, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, kim why, kruddhaḥ angry, iti this, cintayē I am thinking.

'Indeed I have not uttered any harsh word or done anything wrong. I, therefore, wonder why Rama's brother, Lakshmana is angry with me?
asuhṛdbhirmamāmitrairnityamantaradarśibhiḥ.

mama dōṣānasambhūtān śrāvitō rāghavānujaḥ4.32.4৷৷


rāghavānujaḥ Rama's younger brother, asuhṛdbhi: heartless people, nityam always, antaradarśibhiḥ picking holes at me, amitraiḥ by enmies, mama my, asambhūtān imaginary, dōṣān faults, śrāvitaḥ have told.

'Some enemies, who are always searching for imaginary faults of mine might have poisoned Lakshmana's ears.
atra tāvadyathābuddhi sarvairēva yathāvidhi.

bhāvasya niścayastāvadvijñēyō nipuṇaṅ śanaiḥ4.32.5৷৷


atra now, sarvairēva by all of you, tāvat in the mean while, yathā buddhi using your intellect , yathāvidhi duly, bhāvasya your own, niścayaḥ decision, tāvat that much, nipuṇam expertise, śanaiḥ slowly, vijñēyaḥ inform.

'In the meanwhile, (right now) all of you should think quietly and try to know the reason (for Lakshmana's anger), using your intellect and expertise logically and decide( the course of action).
na khalvasti mama trāsō lakṣmaṇānnāpi rāghavāt.

mitraṅ tvasthānakupitaṅ janayatyēva sambhramam4.32.6৷৷


mama my, lakṣmaṇāt from Lakshmana, trāsaḥ fear, nāsti khalu not expected, rāghavādapi even from Rama, na not, asthānakōpitam enraged without reason, mitram friend, sambhramam misgivings, janayatyēva will create.

'I have no fear either from Lakshmana or from Rama. However, when a friend is enraged without reason, it creates misgivings.
sarvathā sukaraṅ mitraṅ duṣkaraṅ paripālanam.

anityatvāccha cittānāṅ prītiralpēpi bhidyatē4.32.7৷৷


sarvathā always, mitram friend, sukaram easy, paripālanam to maintain friendship, duṣkaram is difficult, cittānām of mind, alpē.pi even on flimsy ground, prītiḥ friendship, anityatvāt fickleness, bhidyatē will break.

'It is easy to earn a friend but keeping the friendship sustained is difficult. Due to fickleness of mind friendship gets broken even on flimsy grounds.
atō nimittaṅ trastōhaṅ rāmēṇa tu mahātmanā.

yanmayōpakṛtaṅ śakyaṅ pratikartuṅ na tanmayā4.32.8৷৷


ataḥ nimittam therefore, for that reason, aham I am, mahātmanā by the noble sire, rāmēṇa by Rama, trastaḥ am apprehensive, mama me, yat whatever, upakṛtam has been done, tat that, mayā me, pratikartum to return, na śakyam not able to.

'Therefore, I am apprehensive of Rama. I am not able to repay the help he has rendered to me'.
sugrīvēṇaivamuktastu hanumānharipuṅgavaḥ.

uvāca svēna tarkēṇa madhyē vānaramantriṇām4.32.9৷৷


sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, ēvam in that way, uktastu been said, haripuṅgavaḥ best of monkeys, hanumān Hanuman, vānaramantriṇām among monkeys ministers, madhya in the midst, svēna by his own, tarkēṇa logic, uvāca said these words.

When Sugriva spoke thus, Hanuman the great monkey, submitted in the presnce of the monkey-ministers, applying his own logic:
sarvathā naitadāścaryaṅ yastvaṅ harigaṇēśvara!.

na vismarasi susnigdhamupakāra kṛtaṅ śubham4.32.10৷৷


harigaṇēśvara chief of the vanara clan, tvam to you, susnigdham with utmost sense of friendship, kṛtam done, śubham good, na vismarasi iti yat forgetting like this, ētat this way, sarvathā always, āścaryam surprise, na no.

'It is not at all a matter of surprise, O king of vanara clan, that you forgot the good service rendered to you with utmost sense of friendship.
rāghavēṇa tu vīrēṇa bhayamutsṛjya dūrataḥ.

tvatpriyārthaṅ hatō vālī śakratulyaparākramaḥ4.32.11৷৷


vīrēṇa by the distinguished hero, rāghavēṇa by Rama, bhayam fear, dūrataḥ driving away, utsṛjya putting aside, tvatpriyārtham for your happiness, śakratulyaparākramaḥ valour equal to that of Indra, vālī Vali, hataḥ killed.

'To remove your fear and to please you, the great hero Rama has killed Vali, an equal to Indra in valour.
sarvathā praṇayātkṛddhō rāghavō nātra saṅśayaḥ.

bhrātaraṅ samprahitavānlakṣmaṇaṅ lakṣmivardhanam4.32.12৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, sarvathā ever, praṇayāt due to love, kruddhaḥ enraged, atra here, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no, bhrātaram his brother, lakṣmivardhanam a bestower of prosperity, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, (saṅ) prahitavān sent.

'Rama's anger is purely out of love for you. He has sent Lakshmana, a bestower of prosperity to you. There is no doubt about it.
tvaṅ pramattō na jānīṣē kālaṅ kālavidāṅ vara.

phullasaptacchadaśyāmā pravṛttā tu śaracchivā4.32.13৷৷


kālavidām among the knowers of time, vara best, tvam you are, pramattaḥ not alert, kālam time, na jānīṣē you are not aware, phullasaptacchadaśyāmā a lush green season with blossoming saptachada flowers, śivā (śubhā) auspicious, śarat autumn, pravṛttā has set in.

'You knows best the passage of time (changing seasons). But you are not aware out of inattention that the auspicious autumn has set in, making the garden lush green with blossoms of Saptachada flowers.
nirmalagrahanakṣatrā dyauḥ pranaṣṭavalāhakā.

prasannāśca diśassarvāssaritaśca sarāṅsi ca4.32.14৷৷


pranaṣṭavalāhakā with disappearance of clouds, dyauḥ sky, nirmalagrahanakṣatrā with clear appearance of planets and constellations, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ directions, saritaśca rivers, sarāṅsi ca and tanks, prasannāḥ pleasant.

'The sky from which the dark clouds have completely disappeared is illumined with planets and stars. The rivers and tanks as well as all directions are pleasant.
prāptamudyōgakālaṅ tu nāvaiṣi haripuṅgava.

tvaṅ pramatta iti vyaktaṅ lakṣmaṇō.yamihāgataḥ4.32.15৷৷


haripuṅgava chief of monkeys, prāptam having set in, udyōgakālam time for making millitary endeavour, nāvaiṣi not aware, tvam you, pramattaḥ iti inattentive, ayaṅ lakṣmaṇaḥ this Lakshmana, iha here, āgataḥ has come, vyaktam it is evident.

'O chief of monkeys! it is time for military expeditions. Since you are intoxicated you are not aware of this, Lakshmana has come here evidently for this.
ārtasya hṛtadārasya puruṣaṅ puruṣāntarāt.

vacanaṅ marṣaṇīyaṅ tē rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ4.32.16৷৷


ārtasya of a man in distress, hṛtadārasya of a man who is deprived of his wife, mahātmanaḥ of a great self, rāghavasya Rama's, puruṣāntarāt from another man, paruṣam harsh, vacanam words, tē for you, marṣaṇīyam should be tolerated.

'The message sent by a man who is in distress, and is deprived of his wife should be accepted even if they are harsh since he is a great self (who has rendered you help).
kṛtāparādhasya hi tē nānyatpaśyāmyahaṅ kṣamam.

antarēṇāñjaliṅ baddhvā lakṣmaṇasya prasādanāt4.32.17৷৷


añjalim folded hands, baddhvā by holding, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, prasādanāt antarēṇa make him to excuse, kṣamam to excuse, anyat other than this, kṛtāparādhasya for one who has missed his duty, tē you, aham I, na paśyāmi I do not see.

'In these circumstances the best way is seeking apology from Lakshmana with folded hands. I do not see any way other than this.
niyuktairmantribhirvācyō hyavaśyaṅ pārthivō hitam.

ata ēva bhayaṅ tyaktvā bravīmyavadhṛtaṅ vacaḥ4.32.18৷৷


niyuktai: appointed, mantribhiḥ by ministers, pārthivaḥ king, avaśyam certainly, hitam good, vācyaḥ should advise, ataḥ ēva therefore, bhayam fear, tyaktvā giving up, avadhṛtam what I felt decidedly, vacaḥ bravīmi I am telling these words.

'The counsellors and ministers appointed by a king should certainly give good advice, without fear. This I tell you since I have faith in my words.
abhikruddhassamarthō hi cāpamudyamya rāghavaḥ.

sadēvāsuragandharvaṅ vaśē sthāpayituṅ jagat4.32.19৷৷


abhikruddhaḥ if angry, rāghavaḥ Rama, cāpam bow, udyamya by lifting, sadēvāsuragandharvam including gods, demons and ghandarvas, jagat world, vaśē under control, sthāpayitum to keep, samarthō hi able.

na sa kṣamaḥ kōpayituṅ yaḥ prasādyaḥ punarbhavēt.

pūrvōpakāraṅ smaratā kṛtajñēna viśēṣataḥ4.32.20৷৷


pūrvōpakāram having received help earlier, smaratā remembering, viśēṣataḥ more so, kṛtajñēna by a grateful man, yaḥ whoever, punaḥ again, prasādyaḥ deserves to be propitiated, saḥ he, kōpayitum to show anger, na kṣamaḥ not proper.

'He who deserves propitiation, should not be offended, more so by a grateful man, remembering the help received by him earlier.
tasya mūrdhnā praṇamya tvaṅ saputrassasuhṛjjanaḥ.

rājaṅstiṣṭhasva samayē bharturbhāryēva tadvaśaḥ4.32.21৷৷


rājan O king, saputraḥ along with your son, sasuhṛjjanaḥ with friends, tvam you, tasya his, mūrdhnā with your head, praṇamya bow, samayē by the oath, bhartuḥ to husband, bhāryā iva like a wife, tadvaśaḥ subordinates, tiṣṭhasva you may stand by.

'O king! bow down your head along with your son, friends and relations and honour the oath just as a wife subordinates to the will of the husband. Stand by obediently.
na rāmarāmānujaśāsanaṅ tvayā

kapīndra! yuktaṅ manasā.pyapōhitum.

manō hi tē jñāsyati mānuṣaṅ balaṅ

sa rāghavasyāsya surēndravarcasaḥ4.32.22৷৷


kapīndra O king of monkeys, rāmarāmānujaśāsanam Rama's word or Lakshmana's command, tvayā by you, manasāpi even in heart, apōhitum to overlook, na yuktam not proper, asya his, sarāghavasya along with Rama, surēndravarcasaḥ countenace having the lustre of Indra, mānuṣam human, balam strength, tē manaḥ your mind, jñāsyati hi knows.

'O king of monkeys! It is not right for you to overlook the commands of Rama or Lakshmana even in mind. You know the superhuman virtues of Rama, particularly his valour. The two brothers are like Indra (and Upendra) in valour and might.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē dvātriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtysecond sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
