[Tara arrives -- her lamentations.]

स वानरमहाराजश्शयानश्शरविक्षतः।

प्रत्युक्तो हेतुमद्वाक्यैर्नोत्तरं प्रत्यपद्यत4.19.1।।


शरविक्षतः struck down by arrow, शयानः lying on the ground, सः he (Vali), वानरमहाराजः the king of monkeys, हेतुमद्वाक्यैः by reasonable words, प्रत्युक्तः offered, उत्तरम् reply, न प्रत्यपद्यत not found.

The king of monkeys lying on the ground struck by the arrow did not offer to reply after listening to Rama's appropriate answers (to his objections).
अश्मभिः प्रविभिन्नाङ्गः पादपैराहतो भृशम्।

रामबाणेन चाक्रान्तो जीवितान्ते मुमोह सः4.19.2।।


अश्मभिः with stones, प्रविभिन्नाङ्गः limbs battreed, पादपैः with trees, भृशम् very much, आहतः hit, रामबाणेन च by Rama's arrow, आक्रान्तः attacked, सः he, जीवितान्ते end of life, मुमोह lost consciousness.

Severely battered by stones, hit by trees and pierced by Rama's arrow, Vali lost consciousness as the end of his life was nearing.
तं भार्या बाणमोक्षेण रामदत्तेन संयुगे।

हतं प्लवगशार्दूलं तारा शुश्राव वालिनम्4.19.3।।


प्लवगशार्दूलम् tiger among monkeys, तं वालिनम् by that Vali, संयुगे in the battle, रामदत्तेन hit by Rama, बाणमोक्षेण by the discharge of the arrow, हतम् killed, भार्या wife, तारा Tara, शुश्राव heard.

Tara, wife of Vali, heard that her husband, tiger among monkeys, was killed in the battle by the arrow discharged by Rama.
सा सपुत्राप्रियं श्रुत्वा वधं भर्तुस्सुदारुणम्।

निष्पपात भृशं तस्माद्विविधा गिरिगह्वरात्4.19.4।।


सपुत्रा along with her son, सा Tara, भर्तुः husband's, सुदारुणम् terrible, अप्रियम् sad, वधम् killing, श्रुत्वा on hearing, भृशम् much, उद्विग्ना anxious, तस्मात् from that, गिरि गह्वरात् from the mountain cave, विविधा many, निष्पपात rushed.

Hearing the terrible, unhappy news of her husband's death, Tara anxiously rushed along with her son out of the mountain cave.
ये त्वङ्गदपरीवारा वानरा भीमविक्रमाः।

ते सकार्मुकमालोक्य रामं त्रस्ताः प्रदुद्रुवुः4.19.5।।


अङ्गदपरीवाराः Angada's bodyguards, ये those, भीमविक्रमा: terribly courageous warriors, वानराः monkeys, ते to, सकार्मुकम् with bow, रामम् Rama, आलोक्य seeing, त्रस्ताः frightened, प्रदुद्रुवु: ran in different directions.

Alarmed at the sight of Rama holding the bow, the terribly courageous monkeys who followed Angada as his bodyguards ran in different directions.
सा ददर्श ततस्त्रस्तान्हरीनापततो भृशम्।

यूथादिव परिभ्रष्टान्मृगान्निहतयूथपान्4.19.6।।


ततः then, सा she, त्रस्तान् terrorstricken, भृशम् very much, आपततः running, निहतयूथपान् the leader killed, यूथात् from the troop, परिभ्रष्टान् strayed, मृगानिव like the deer, हरीन् monkeys, ददर्श saw.

Tara saw the terrorstricken monkeys running helterskelter, like the herd of deer whose leader who had strayed had been killed.
तानुवाच समासाद्य दुःखितान्दुखिता सती।

रामवित्रासितान्सर्वाननुबद्धानिवेषुभिः4.19.7।।


दुःखितान् sorrowing ones, इषुभिः by the arrows, अनुबद्धानिव as if stricken at the back, रामवित्रासितान् terrified by Rama's arrows, तान् them, समासाद्य after duly approaching them, दुःखिता सती she herself being sorrowful, उवाच said.

Sorrowful Tara, the wife of Vali, duly approaching the monkeys stricken with grief and running as if chased by the arrows of Rama at their back, said to them:
वानराः राजसिंहस्य यस्य यूयं पुरस्सराः।

तं विहाय सुसन्त्रस्ताः कस्माद्द्रवथ दुर्गताः4.19.8।।


वानराः O monkeys, यूयम् all of you, यस्य whosoever, राजसिंहस्य of a lion among kings, पुरःसराः walked ahead, तम् him, विहाय left, सुसन्त्रस्ताः extremely frightened, दुर्गताः distressed, कस्मात् why, द्रवथ are you running?

'O monkeys deserting the lion among kings,whose servants you are ? What should you be frightened for ? Why run away in distress?
राज्यहेतोस्स चेद्भ्राता भ्रात्रा रौद्रेण पातितः।

रामेण प्रहितैरौद्रैर्मार्गणैर्दूरपातिभिः4.19.9।।


रौद्रेण terrified, भ्रात्रा by the brother, सः he, Vali, राज्यहेतोः for the sake of kingship, रामेण by Rama, रौद्रात् in anger, प्रहितैः discharged, दूरपातिभिः farreaching, मार्गणैः with arrows, पातितः चेत् if he is struck down.

'If the (elder) brother is struck down by his (younger) brother in anger for the sake of kingship using farreaching arrows discharged by Rama, why are you running?'
कपिपत्न्या वचश्श्रुत्वा कपयः कामरूपिणः।

प्राप्तकालमविक्लिष्टमूचुर्वचनमङ्गनाम्4.19.10।।


कामरूपिणः who change form at their will, कपयः monkeys, कपिपत्न्या: of the wife of Vali, वचः words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, प्राप्तकालम् timely, अविक्लिष्टम् clear, वचनम् words, अङ्गनाम् to the lady, ऊचुः spoke.

On hearing Tara, the wife of Vali, the monkeys who could assume any form at their will replied with clear words appropriate to the occasion:
जीवपुत्रे निवर्तस्व पुत्रं रक्षस्व चाङ्गदम्।

अन्तको रामरूपेण हत्वा नयति वालिनम्4.19.11।।


जीवपुत्रे O mother of a son who is alive, निवर्तस्व go back, पुत्रम् son, अङ्गदम् Angada, रक्षस्व you may protect, अन्तकः lord of death, रामरूपेण in the form of Rama, वालिनम् Vali, हत्वा having killed, नयति carrying away.

'O mother, your son is still alive. Go back and protect your son Angada. Lord of death in the form of Rama has come and killed Vali and is carrying him away.
क्षिप्तान् वृक्षान्समाविध्य विपुलाश्च शिलास्तथा।

वाली वज्रसमैर्बाणै रामेण विनिपातितः4.19.12।।


क्षिप्तान् hurled, वृक्षान् trees, तथा so also, विपुलाः huge, शिलाः rocks, वज्रसमैः like thunderbolt, बाणैः by arrows, समाविध्य after striking, वाली Vali, रामेण by Rama, निपातितः killed.

'Rama smashed the trees and stones Vali hurled at him and then struck him down with thunderboltlike arrows.
अभिद्रुतमिदं सर्वं विद्रुतं प्रसृतं बलम्।

अस्मिन् प्लवगशार्दूले हते शक्रसमप्रभे4.19.13।।


शक्रसमप्रभे equal to Indra in splendour, अस्मिन् his, प्लवगशार्दूले tiger among monkeys, हते is killed, इदम् this, सर्वम् all, बलम् army, अभिद्रुतम् terrified, विद्रुतम् scattered , प्रसृतम् spread all over.

'When Vali who was equal to Indra in strength, a tiger among monkeys, was killed, the army of monkeys got terrified and ran away here and there, scattered in different directions.
रक्ष्यतां नगरद्वारमङ्गदश्चाभिषिच्यताम्।

पदस्थं वालिनः पुत्रं भजिष्यन्ति प्लवङ्गमाः4.19.14।।


नगरद्वारम् the gateway of the city, रक्ष्यताम् may be protected, अङ्गदश्च Angada also, अभिषिच्यताम् be consecrated, पदस्थम् assuming the position of a king, वालिनः पुत्रम् Vali's son, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, भजिष्यन्ति will serve him.

'Let the gate of the city be shut and Vali's son be consecrated as king. All the monkeys will serve him when he assumes power.
अथवाऽरुचितं स्थानमिह ते रुचिरानने।

आविशन्ति हि दुर्गाणि क्षिप्रमन्यानि वानराः4.19.15।।


रुचिरानने a woman with a lovely face, अथवा or else, इह here, ते your, स्थानम् place, अरुचितम् not proper, वानराः monkeys, अद्यैव this very day, क्षिप्रम् at once, अन्यानि other, दुर्गाणि citadels, आविशन्ति हि will occupy.

'O lovely Tara, this very day other monkeys will soon occupy our citadels.
अभार्याश्च सभार्याश्च सन्त्यत्र वनचारिणः।

लुब्धेभ्यो विप्रयुक्तेभ्यस्तेभ्यो नस्तुमुलं भयम्4.19.16।।


अभार्याः those who do not have wives, सभार्याश्च those who have wives too, वनचारिणः wanderers of the forest, अत्र there, सन्ति are found, लुब्देभ्यः those who have made others wives their own, विप्रयुक्तेभ्यः separated from their wives, तेभ्यः from them, नः no, स्तुमुलम् great, भयम् fear.

'There are monkeys wandering in the forest (sent away by Vali). Some of them have made others' wives their own and some have been separated from their wives. They are a great cause of fear.'
अल्पान्तरगतानां तु श्रुत्वा वचनमङ्गना।

आत्मनः प्रतिरूपं सा बभाषे चारुहासिनी4.19.17।।


अल्पान्तरगतानाम् of those lowminded monkeys, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा after hearing, चारुहासिनी a lady with a gentle smile, सा अङ्गना that lady, आत्मनः of herself, प्रतिरूपम् in her own style, बभाषे spoke.

Hearing the words of the pettyminded monkeys, Tara spoke to them in her own way with a gentle smile:
पुत्रेण मम किं कार्यं राज्येनच किमात्मना।

कपिसिंहे महाभागे तस्मिन्भर्तरि नश्यति4.19.18।।


कपिसिंहे lion among monkeys, महाभागे glorious, तस्मिन् him, नश्यति सति he is dying, मम to me, पुत्रेण by my son, किं कार्यम् what use, राज्येन (अपि) च even with the kingdom, आत्मना with my own life, किम् what purpose?

'Now that the glorious Vali, a lion among monkeys, my husband is dying, of what purpose is the son, or the kingdom or my own life?
पादमूलं गमिष्यामि तस्यैवाहं महात्मनः।

योऽसौ रामप्रयुक्तेन शरेण विनिपातितः4.19.19।।


यः whosoever, असौ this person, रामप्रयुक्तेन discharged by Rama, शरेण by arrow, विनिपातितः is killed, महात्मनः of the great soul, तस्य his, पादमूलम् एव soles of his feet, गमिष्यामि I will go.

'I will seek the soles of the feet of the great soul who has been killed by the arrow discharged by Rama.'
एवमुक्त्वा प्रदुद्राव रुदन्ती शोककर्शिता।

शिरश्चोरश्च बाहुभ्यां दुःखेन समभिध्नती4.19.20।।


एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having spoken, रुदन्ती while crying, शोककर्शिता grief stricken, दुःखेन sadly, शिरश्च head, उरश्च chest, बाहुभ्याम् with both hands, समभिध्नती beating, प्रदुद्राव hastened.

So saying, the griefstricken, weeping Tara hastened, sadly beating with both hands her head and her chest.
आव्रजन्ती ददर्शाथ पतिं निपतितं भुवि।

हन्तारं दानवेन्द्राणां समरेष्वनिवर्तिनम्4.19.21।।


आव्रजन्ती as she approached, अथ then, दानवेन्द्राणाम् of warriors among demons, हन्तारम् killed, समरेषु in wars, अनिवर्तिनम् who never retreated, भुवि on the ground, निपतितम् fallen, पतिम् husband, ददर्श saw.

As she was nearing (the spot) she saw her husband, a great conqueror of monkeys who never retreated from the battle, mortally hit and fallen on the ground.
क्षेप्तारं पर्वतेन्द्राणां वज्राणामिव वासवम्।

महावातसमाविष्टं महामेघौघनिस्स्वनम्4.19.22।।


वज्राणाम् the thunderbolts, वासवम् इव like Indra, पर्वतेन्द्राणाम् of huge mountains, क्षेप्तारम् the one who hurls, महावातसमाविष्टम् wind blowing at high velocity, महामेघौघनिस्स्वनम्
thundering like huge clouds.

Vali who used to hurl huge mountains like Indra discharges thunderbolts, who had the speed of wind of high velocity, who would roar like huge thundering clouds,
क्रतुल्यपराक्रान्तं वृष्टवेवोपरतं घनम्।

नर्दन्तं नर्दतां भीमं शूरं शूरेण पातितम्4.19.23।।

शार्दूलेनामिषस्यार्थे मृगराजं यथाहतम्।


शक्रतुल्यपराक्रान्तम् equal to Indra in prowess, वृष्टवा after raining, उपरतम् who stopped, घनम् इव heavy cloud like, नर्दन्तम् thundering, नर्दताम् among those who roared, भीमम् terrific, शूरम् heroic, शूरेण by a hero, पातितम् struck down, आमिषस्यार्थे for the sake of meat, शार्दूलेन by tiger, आहतम् killed, मृगराजं यथा like the lion.

(Vali) who was equal to Indra in prowess looked like a huge monsoon cloud that had calmed down after pouring all water, a roaring warrior who could frighten others, struck down by another warrior, appeared like a lion killed by a tiger for the sake of meat
अर्चितं सर्वलोकस्य सपताकं सवेदिकम्4.19.24।।

नागहेतोस्सुपर्णेन चैत्यमुन्मथितं यथा।


सर्वलोकस्य by all the worlds, अर्चितम् revered, सपताकम् along with the flag, सवेदिकम् along with the altar, सुपर्णेन by Garuda, नागहेतोः on account of serpent, उन्मथितम् destroyed, चैत्यं यथा like the sacred chaityaa place of worship.

Vali looked like a chaitya (a tree of worship) having a banner and altar and reverentially worshipped by the entire world, but destroyed by Garuda on account of a serpent (hidden in it). (Here Rama is Garuda, Sugriva, serpent and Vali a sacred Chaitya)
अवष्टभ्य च तिष्ठन्तं ददर्श धनुरुत्तम्4.19.25।।

रामं रामानुजं चैव भर्तुश्चैवानुजं शुभा।


उत्तमम् best, धनुः bow, अवष्टभ्य leaning on, तिष्ठन्तम् standing firmly, रामम् Rama, रामानुजं चैव and brother of Rama also, भर्तुः husband's, अनुजं brother, शुभा चैव auspicious lady, ददर्श beheld.

The auspicious lady Tara beheld Rama standing there firmly with his brother and Sugriva, leaning on the best of bows.
तावतीत्य समासाद्य भर्तारं निहतं रणे4.19.26।।

समीक्ष्य व्यथिता भूमौ सम्भ्रान्ता निपपात ह।


तौ both of them (Rama and Lakshmana), अतीत्य passing, रणे in war, निहतम् killed, भर्तारम् her husband, समासाद्य having reached, समीक्ष्य after seeing, व्यथिता very much pained, सम्भ्रान्ता agitated, भूमौ on the ground, निपपात ह fell down.

Passing Rama and Lakshmana, she went near her husband killed in the combat. She was full of agony to see him. Deeply agitated in the mind, she fell down on the ground.
सुप्त्वेव पुनरुत्थाय आर्यपुत्रेति शोचती4.19.27।।

रुरोद सा पतिं दृष्ट्वा संवीतं मृत्युदामभिः।


सा that, सुप्त्वेव as if from sleep, पुनः again, उत्थाय rising up, आर्यपुत्र इति O Aryaputra (husband), शोचती weeping, मृत्युदामभिः with the garland of death, संवीतम् surrounded, पतिम् husband, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, रुरोद lamented.

Tara got up again, as if she woke up from sleep and addressing her husband garlanded with death, lamented.
तामवेक्ष्य तु सुग्रीवः क्रोशन्तीं कुररीमिव।

विषादमगमत्कष्टं दृष्ट्वा चाङ्गदमागतम्4.19.28।।


सुग्रीवः Sugriva, कुररीमिव like a female osprey, क्रोशन्तीम् while she was crying, ताम् her, अवेक्ष्य seeing, आगतम् came, आङ्गदं च and Angada also, दृष्ट्वा seeing, कष्टम् pain, विषादम् despair, अगमत् experienced.

Seeing Tara crying like a female osprey and Angada following her in despair, Sugriva felt pain (at heart).
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकोनविंशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the nineteenth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
