[Lakshmana speaks to Hanuman the purpose of their arrival at Rishyamuka -- Hanuman takes Rama and Lakshmana on his shoulders to Sugriva]

ततः प्रहृष्टौ हनुमान्कृत्यवानिति तद्वचः।

श्रुत्वा मधुरसम्भाषं सुग्रीवं मनसा गतः4.4.1।।


ततः then, कृत्यवान् who has done his duty, हनुमान् Hanuman, इति thus, तद्वचः his words, श्रुत्वा having heard, मधुरसम्भाषं च and sweet talk, प्रहृष्टः glad, मनसा at heart, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, गतः about

After listening to the sweet words of Lakshmana, Hanuman, having done what he had to do felt happy and thought of Sugriva.
भव्यो राज्यागमस्तस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः।

यदयं कृत्यवान्प्राप्तः कृत्यं चैतदुपागतम्4.4.2।।


महात्मनः great self, तस्य सुग्रीवस्य that Sugriva's, राज्यागमः acquisition of kingdom, भव्यः is likely to happen, यत् since, कृत्यवान् one who has done his duty, अयम् this, प्राप्तः got, एतत् this, कृतं च and has work, उपागतम् has come

The great Sugriva, thinks Hanuman, who had done his duty is likely to acquire his kingdom, because great Rama who would help in the work of Sugriva has also come.'
ततः परमसंहृष्टो हनुमान् प्लवगर्षभः।

प्रत्युवाच ततो वाक्यं रामं वाक्यविशारदः4.4.3।।


ततः then, परमसंहृष्टः extremely happy, प्लवगोत्तमः best of monkeys, हनुमान् Hanuman, ततः then,वाक्यविशारदम् learned in converasation, रामम् Rama's, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच enquired

Hanuman, the best of the monkeys, learned in conversation, felt extremely happy and enquired from Rama:
किमिर्थं त्वं वनं घोरं पम्पाकाननमण्डितम्।

आगतस्सानुजो दुर्गं नानाव्याळमृगायुतम्4.4.4।।


सानुजः accompanied by your brother, पम्पाकाननमण्डितम् woods surrounding Pampa, दुर्गम् inaccessible, नानाव्यालमृगायुतम् full of different kinds of serpents and wild animals, घोरम् dreadful, वनम् forest, किमर्थम् why, आगतः came here?

'Why have you come with your brother to this dreadful, inaccessible forest surrounding Pampa, full of different varieties of serpents and wild animals?'
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणो रामचोदितः।

आचचक्षे महात्मानं रामं दशरथात्मजम्4.4.5।।


लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, तस्य his, तत् those, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, रामचोदितः urged by Rama, महात्मानम् great soul, दशरथात्मजम् son of Dasaratha, रामम् Rama, आचचक्षे narrated

Having listened to Hanuman, and urged by Rama, Lakshmana told him about the great Rama, son of Dasaratha.
राजा दशरथो नाम द्युतिमान्धर्मवत्सलः।

चातुर्वर्ण्यं स्वधर्मेण नित्यमेवाभ्यपालयत्4.4.6।।


द्युतिमान् brilliant, धर्मवत्सलः lover of dharma, चातुर्वर्ण्यम् four classes, नित्यमेव always, स्वधर्मेण his duty, अभ्यपालयत् ruled, दशरथो नाम named Dasaratha, राजा king

न द्वेष्टा विद्यते तस्य न च स द्वेष्टि कञ्चन।

स च सर्वेषु भूतेषु पितामह इवापरः4.4.7।।

अग्निष्टोमादिभिर्यज्ञैरिष्टवानाप्तदक्षिणैः।


तस्य his, द्वेष्टा enemy, न विद्यते never existed, सः he, कञ्चन any one indeed, न द्वेष्टि not hated, सः he, सर्वेषु at all, भूतेषु beings, अपरः another, पितामहः इव like the father, आप्तदक्षिणैः with generous gifts, अग्निष्टोमादिभिः with fire sacrifices and others, यज्ञैः with yajnas, इष्टवान् performed.

'He never hated any one nor did any one ever hate him. To all his subjects, he was like another father, the Creator Brahma. And he was generous in giving gifts while performing yajnas (rituals with fire) like Agnistoma.
तस्यायं पूर्वजः पुत्रो रामो नाम जनैः श्रुतः।।4.4.8।।

शरण्यस्सर्वभूतानां पितुर्निर्देशपारगः।


अयम् this is, तस्य his, पूर्वजः elder, पुत्रः son, रामो नाम by name Rama, जनैः by people, श्रुतः popular, सर्वभूतानाम् at all beings, शरण्यः protector, पितुः father's, निर्देशपारगः one who never fails to follow instructions.

'Here is his eldest son, popularly known as Rama. He is the protector of all beings and never failed his father's instructions.
वीरो दशरथस्यायं पुत्राणां गुणवत्तमः।।4.4.9।।

राजलक्षणसम्पन्नस्सम्युक्तो राजसम्पदा।

राज्याद्भ्रष्टो वने वस्तुं मया सार्धमिहागतः4.4.10।।


दशरथस्य Dasaratha's, पुत्राणाम् among sons, वीरः warrior, गुणवत्तमः most virtuous, राजलक्षणसंयुक्तः endowed with royal traits, राज्यसम्पदा with royal wealth, संयुक्तः he is
endowed with, अयम् this one, राज्यात् from kingdom, भ्रष्टः is sent away, वने in the forest, वस्तुम् to reside, मया सार्धम् along with me, इह here, आगतः has come

भार्यया च महातेजास्सीतयाऽनुगतो वशी।

दिनक्षये महातेजाः प्रभयेव दिवाकरः4.4.11।।


महातेजाः glorious one, वशी selfcontrolled, दिनक्षये at the end of the day, दिवाकरः Sun, प्रभयेव with radiance, भार्यया with wife, सीतया with Sita, अनुगतः followed

'This glorious Rama was followed by his wife, Sita, like the rays of the effulgent Sun follow him to the end of the day.
अहमस्यावरो भ्राता गुणैर्दास्यमुपागतः।

कृतज्ञस्य बहुज्ञस्य लक्ष्मणो नाम नामतः4.4.12।।


अहम् I am, कृतज्ञस्य of the grateful man, बहुज्ञस्य of a wellversed man, अस्य his, गुणैः by virtues, दास्यम् servitude, उपागतः has accepted, अवरः younger, भ्राता brother, नामतः name, लक्ष्मणो नाम called Lakshmana

'I am his younger brother, called Lakshmana. I have accepted the service of this learned, virtuous and grateful man.
सुखार्हस्य महार्हस्य सर्वभूतहितात्मनः।

ऐश्वर्येण च हीनस्य वनवासाश्रितस्य च4.4.13।।

रक्षसाऽपहृता भार्या रहिते कामरूपिणा।

तच्च न ज्ञायते रक्षः पत्नी येनास्य सा हृता4.4.14।।


सुखार्हस्य deserved comforts, महार्हस्य worthy of reverence, सर्वभूतहितात्मनः wellwisher of all beings, ऐश्वर्येण by wealth, विहीनस्य deprived, वनवासे dwelling in the forest, रतस्य of a man engaged, भार्या wife, रहिते when we were not present2 2सा she, कामरूपिणा who can assume any form at will, रक्षसा by a demon, अपहृता kidnapped, येन वा or by whomsoever, अस्य his, भार्या wife, हृता has been stolen, तत् that, रक्षः rakshasa, न ज्ञायते is not known

'This man who should have lived in comfort and in reverence, one who was worthy of all the wellwishers lost his wealth and was banished into the forest. He is now deprived of his wife kidnapped by an unknown demon who could assume any form at will.
दनुर्नाम दितेः पुत्रश्शापाद्राक्षसतां गतः।

आख्यातस्तेन सुग्रीवस्समर्थो वानरर्षभः4.4.15।।


दितेः Diti's, पुत्रः a son, शापात् by curse, राक्षसताम् as a demon, गतः became, दनुः नाम called Danu, तेन by him, वानरर्षभः the bull among monkeys, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, समर्थः capable, आख्यातः had said

'Diti's son called Danu who had been cursed to live the life of a demon had said that Sugriva, the best among monkeys, would be able to locate her.
स ज्ञास्यति महावीर्यस्तव भार्यापहारिणम्।

एवमुक्त्वा दनुस्स्वर्गं भ्राजमानो गतस्सुखम्4.4.16।।


महावीर्यः valiant one, सः he, तव your, भार्यापहारिणम् who has stolen your wife, ज्ञास्यति will know, दनुः Danu, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having said, भ्राजमानः glowing away, स्वर्गम् heaven, सुखम् happily, गतः went

'That Valiant Sugriva can spot the demon who has abducted your wife', said Danu and disappeared happily into heaven shining in brilliance.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथा तथ्येन पृच्छतः।

अहं चैव हि रामश्च सुग्रीवं शरणं गतौ4.4.17।।


पृच्छतः since you asked, ते you, एतत् that, सर्वम् every event, यथा तथ्येन in fact, आख्यातम् said, अहं चैव and I also, रामश्च Rama too, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva's, शरणम् refuge, गतौ both arrived

'I have given a factual account of everything, since you asked me. Now Rama and I have arrived seeking Sugriva's shelter.
एष दत्त्वा च वित्तानि प्राप्य चानुत्तमं यशः।

लोकनाथः पुरा भूत्वा सुग्रीवं नाथमिच्छति4.4.18।।


एषः this person, वित्तानि wealth, दत्त्वा च and gifting , अनुत्तमम् excellence ,यशः fame, प्राप्य च having obtained, पुरा earlier, लोकनाथः lord of the world, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, नाथम् king, इच्छति wishes

'Having earned supreme fame through his munificence in the past, this lord of the world now craves Sugriva's indulgence.
पिता यस्य पुरा ह्यासीच्छरण्यो धर्मवत्सलः।

तस्य पुत्रश्शरण्यश्च सुग्रीवं शरणं गतः4.4.19।।


पुरा earlier, यस्य whose, धर्मवत्सलः lover of dharma, पिता father, शरण्यः refuge to others, आसीत् he was, शरण्यश्च refuge of, तस्य his, पुत्रः son, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, शरणं गतः seeks protection

'One whose father was once a protector of dharma, a refuge to all now seeks Sugriva's shelter.
सर्वलोकस्य धर्मात्मा शरण्यश्शरणं पुरा।

गुरुर्मे राघवस्सोऽयं सुग्रीवं शरणं गतः4.4.20।।


धर्मात्मा righteous, शरण्यः protector, पुरा earlier, सर्वलोकस्य for the whole world, to all (his) people शरणम् protector, गुरुः respectable, सः he, अयम् this person, राघवः Rama, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva's, शरणं गतः sought protection

'This righteous Rama who used to lend in the past protection to the whole world and, indeed, a refuge to all, venerable sir, now seeks Sugriva's shelter.
यस्य प्रसादे सततं प्रसीदेयुरिमाः प्रजाः।

स रामो वानरेन्द्रस्य प्रसादमभिकाङ्क्षते। 4.4.21।।


यस्य whose, प्रसादे grace, इमाः these, प्रजाः people, सततम् always, प्रसीदेयुः they will be pleased, सः रामः that Rama, वानरेन्द्रस्य chief of monkeys', प्रसादम् favour, अभिकाङ्क्षते is desiring

'This Rama for whose grace the subjects were ever bobolden to him now seeks the favour of the Chief of monkeys.
येन सर्वगुणोपेताः पृथिव्यां सर्वपार्थिवाः।

मानितास्सततं राज्ञा सदा दशरथेन वै4.4.22

तस्यायं पूर्वजः पुत्रस्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः।

सुग्रीवं वानरेन्द्रं तु रामश्शरणमागतः4.4.23।।


राज्ञा by the king, येन by whom, दशरथेन by Dasaratha, पृथिव्याम् on this earth, सर्वगुणोपेताः endowed with all virtues, सर्वपार्थिवाः all kings, सदा always, सततम् ever, मानिताः honoured, तस्य his, पूर्वजः eldest, पुत्रः son, त्रिषु लोकेषु in the three worlds, विश्रुतः very famous, अयं रामः such Rama, वानरेन्द्रम् lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, शरणमागतः sought refuge

'Famous in all the three worlds, this Rama, who was the firshborn of Dasaratha, endowed with all virtues and ever respected by all the kings of this earth, now seeks shelter of Sugriva, Chief of monkeys.
शोकाभिभूते रामे तु शोकार्ते शरणं गते।

कर्तुमर्हति सुग्रीवः प्रसादं हरियूधपः4.4.24।।


हरियूधप: lord of monkeys, शोकाभिभूते one who is overcome by grief, शोकार्ते one who is pained by sorrow, शरणं गते when he sought refuge, रामे to Rama, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, प्रसादम् favour कर्तुम् to render, अर्हति deserves

'Sugriva, lord of monkeys, ought to help Rama who tormented by, and overwhelmed with, grief seeks his favour.'
एवं ब्रुवाणं सौमित्रिं करुणं साश्रुलोचनम्।

हनुमान्प्रत्युवाचेदं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः4.4.25।।


करुणम् piteously, साश्रुलोचनम् eyes filled with tears, एवम् that way, ब्रुवाणम् while speaking, सौमित्रिम् to Saumithri, वाक्यविशारदः an erudite speaker, हनुमान् Hanuman, इदम् these, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच replied back

To Saumitri who was speaking thus in a piteous tone, his eyes filled with tears the eloquent Hanuman replied:
ईदृशा बुद्धिसम्पन्ना जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः।

द्रष्टव्या वानरेन्द्रेण दिष्ट्या दर्शनमागताः4.4.26।।


बुद्धिसम्पन्नाः highly intelligent, जितक्रोधाः who have conquered anger, जितेन्द्रियाः who have 2 2conquered senses, दिष्ट्या luckily, दर्शनम् to see, आगताः came here, ईदृशाः such men, वानरेन्द्रेण by king of vanaras, द्रष्टव्या deserve to be approached

'It is a matter of great fortune that you who have intelligence, control over your senses and conquered anger have come to see the lord of monkeys who needs instead, to approach you.
स हि राज्यात्परिभ्रष्टः कृतवैरश्च वालिना।

हृतदारो वने त्यक्तो भ्रात्रा विनिकृतो भृशम्4.4.27।।


वालिना by Vali, कृतवैरः developed enmity, भ्रात्रा by his brother, हृतदारः deprived of his wife, भृशम् strongly, विनिकृतः is offended, राज्यात् from the kingdom, विभ्रष्टः thrown out, सः he, त्यक्त: is abandoned, वने in the forest

'(In fact) seriously offended by his brother Vali who treated him like his enemy and expelled him from the kingdom. He is now abandoned in the forest, his wife hijacked.
करिष्यति स साहाय्यं युवयोर्भास्करात्मजः।

सुग्रीवस्सह चास्माभि स्सीतायाः परिमार्गणे4.4.28।।


भास्करात्मजः son of the Sungod, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, अस्माभिः सह along with us, सीतायाः Sita's, परिमार्गणे in search of, युवयोः for both of you, साहाय्यम् help, करिष्यति he will do

'Sugriva, son of the Sungod, along with us will extend all help to you, in your search for Sita.'
इत्येवमुक्त्वा हनुमान् श्लक्ष्णं मधुरया गिरा।

बभाषे सोऽभिगच्छेम सुग्रीवमिति राघवम्4.4.29।।


हनुमान् Hanuman, मधुरया sweetly, गिरा with words, इत्येवम् like that, श्लक्ष्णम् gently, उक्त्वा having said, साधु well done, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, अभिगच्छेम we will go, इति thus, राघवम् Raghava, बभाषे spoke

Hanuman, having spoken with sweet, gentle words said to the Raghavas, 'We will now go to Sugriva'.
एवं ब्रुवाणं धर्मात्मा हनुमन्तं स लक्ष्मणः।

प्रतिपूज्य यथान्यायमिदं प्रोवाच राघवम्4.4.30।।


धर्मात्मा righteous, सः लक्ष्मणः that Lakshmana, एवम् in that way, ब्रुवाणम् as he spoke, हनुमन्तम् to Hanuman, यथान्यायम् as per tradition, प्रतिपूज्य offered salutation, राघवम् Raghava, इदम् this, प्रोवाच spoke

Having offered reverential salutations to Hanuman as per tradition, righteous Lakshmana now spoke to Rama:
कपिः कथयते हृष्टो यथाऽयं मारुतात्मजः।

कृत्यवांत्सोऽपि सम्प्राप्तः कृतकृत्योऽसि राघव4.4.31।।


राघव Rama, मारुतात्मजः son of the windgod, अयं कपिः this monkey, हृष्टः a pleased one, यथा as, कथयते he is telling, सोऽपि he also, कृत्यवान् a person of action, सम्प्राप्तः has come, कृतकृत्यः accomplished, असि you are

'O Raghava this monkey, son of the Windgod appears pleased as evident from his words. As he is a man of action, take your work as accomplished now.
प्रसन्नमुखवर्णश्च व्यक्तं हृष्टश्च भाषते।

नानृतं वक्ष्यते वीरो हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः4.4.32।।


व्यक्तम् it is evident, प्रसन्नमुखवर्णश्च he has a cheerful face, हृष्टश्च he is pleased, भाषते words, मारुतात्मजः son of the windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, अनृतम् lie, न वक्ष्यते will not tell

'It is evident from his words and from his cheerful face that Hanuman is pleased. (I know that) this heroic son of the Windgod will never tell a lie'.
ततस्स तु महाप्राज्ञो हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः।

जगामादाय तौ वीरौ हरिराजाय राघवौ4.4.33।।


ततः then, महाप्राज्ञः very wise, मारुतात्मजः son of the windgod, सः हनुमान् that Hanuman, वीरौ warrior heroes, तौ राघवौ both Raghavas, हरिराजाय to the king of monkeys, आदाय
led them, जगाम went

Hanuman, son of the Windgod, endowed with great wisdom carried both the Raghava warriors to the king of monkeys.
भिक्षुरूपं परित्यज्य वानरं रूपमास्थितः।

पृष्ठमारोप्य तौ वीरौ जगाम कपिकुञ्जरः4.4.34।।


कपिकुञ्जरः elephantlike monkey, भिक्षुरूपम् form of a mendicant, परित्यज्य gave up, वानरम् monkeys, रूपम् form, आस्थितः assumed, तौ both, वीरौ heroes, पृष्ठम् on the back, आरोप्य lifted, जगाम proceeded.

Hanuman, who was an elephant among monkeys, gave up the guise of a mendicant, and assuming the form of the monkeys, lifted both the heroes on to his back and proceeded.
स तु विपुलयशाः कपिप्रवीरः

पवनसुतः कृतकृत्यवत्प्रहृष्टः।

गिरिवरमुरुविक्रमः प्रयात

स्स शुभमतिस्सह रामलक्ष्मणाभ्याम्4.4.35।।


विपुलयशाः highly renowned, कपिप्रवीरः most heroic monkey, सः पवनसुतः son of the windgod, कृतकृत्यवत् having done his duty, प्रहृष्टः gladly, शुभमतिः with auspicious feeling, उरुविक्रमः renowned for his valiance, सः he, रामलक्ष्मणाभ्यां सह with Rama and Lakshmana, गिरिवरम् to the great mountain, प्रयातः departed.

The son of the Windgod, the most valiant, the supremely heroic monkey and the one welladmired, having performed his task, felt immensely happy.And with an auspicious feeling, departed for the great mountain (Rishyamuka) along with Rama and Lakshmana.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किंधाकाण्डे चतुर्थस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the fourth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
