[Sugriva asks the army to move eastward -- description of eastern direction.]

अथ राजा समृद्धार्थस्सुग्रीवः प्लवगेश्वरः।

उवाच नरशार्दूलं रामं परबलार्दनम्।।4.40.1।।


प्लवगेश्वरः lord of monkeys, राजा king, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, समृद्धार्थः supported by massive army, अथ then, नरशार्दूलम् tiger among men, परबलार्दनम् who could crush enemy army, रामम् to Rama, उवाच said.

Sugriva, lord of monkeys, who was supported by a massive army informed Rama, the tiger among men and a crusher of the enemy army
आगता विनिविष्टाश्च बलिनः कामरूपिणः।

वानरा वारणेन्द्रभा: ये मद्विषयवासिनः।।4.40.2।।


ये those, मद्विषयवासिनः residing in my kingdom, बलिनः strong, कामरूपिण: who can assume any form at will, वारणेन्द्रभा: huge like elephants, वानरेन्द्राः vanara heroes, आगताः have come, विनिविष्टाश्च have settled down here.

'The vanaras living in my kingdom have come and have settled down. They are strong and huge like elephants and they can assume any form at will.
त इमे बहुविक्रान्तैर्हरिभिर्भीमविक्रमैः।

आगता वानरा घोरा दैत्यदानवसन्निभाः।।4.40.3।।


घोराः dreadful, दैत्यदानवसन्निभाः resemble daityas and demons in form, ते those, इमे वानराः vanaras, बहुविक्रान्तैः very powerful, हरिभिः monkeys, भीमविक्रमैः of frightening valour, आगताः have arrived.

'Dreadful monkeys, powerful monkeys of fierce valour who resemble demons in form, have arrived.
ख्यातकर्मापदानाश्च बलवन्तो जितक्लमाः।

पराक्रमेषु विख्याता व्यवसायेषु चोत्तमाः।।4.40.4।।

पृथिव्यम्बुचरा राम नानानगनिवासिनः।

कोट्यग्रश इमे प्राप्ता वानरास्तव किङ्कराः।।4.40.5।।


राम O Rama, ख्यातकर्मापदानाश्च earned fame for their valiant deeds in the past, बलवन्तः powerful ones, जितक्लमाः indefatigable, पराक्रमेषु in might, विख्याताः famous, व्यवसायेषु in making efforts, उत्तमाः best, पृथिव्यम्बुचराः who can move on earth as well as water, नानानगनिवासिनः living on several mountains, इमे they, वानराः vanaras, कोट्यग्रश: crores of them, तव your, किङ्कराः vanaras, प्राप्ताः have come.

Powerful vanaras who have earned fame for their valiant deeds in the past, those who are indefatigable and wellknown for their valour having gained preeminence through their efforts and living on several mountains, those who can move on the earth as well as water, crores of them have arrived.
निदेशवर्तिनस्सर्वे सर्वे गुरुहिते रताः।

अभिप्रेतमनुष्ठातुं तव शक्ष्यन्त्यरिन्दम।।4.40.6।।


अरिन्दम O subduer of foes, सर्वे all, निदेशवर्तिनः follow your orders, सर्वे all, गुरुहिते in the wellbeing of the elders, रताः engaged, तव your, अभिप्रेतम् your wish, अनुष्ठातुम् to fulfil, शक्ष्यन्ति are capable.

'O Rama,the subduer of foes all of them will follow your command.They are engaged in seeking the wellbeing of elders and can fulfil your wish.
त इमे बहुसाहस्रैरनीकै भीमविक्रमैः।

आगता वानरा घोरा दैत्यदानवसन्निभा:।।4.40.7।।


त इमे these, घोरा dreadful, दैत्यदानवसन्निभा: resembling daityas and danavas, बहुसाहस्रै in many thousands, अनीकैः with forces, भीमविक्रमैः with fierce fighters,
आगताः have arrived.

'Dreadful monkeys who resemble demons have arrived along with thousands of fierce fighters.
यन्मन्यसे नरव्याघ्र प्राप्तकालं तदुच्यताम्।

तत्सैन्यं त्वद्वशे युक्तमाज्ञापयितुमर्हसि।।4.40.8।।


नरव्याघ्र O tiger among men, यत् such that, प्राप्तकालम् proper time, मन्यसे if you think, तत् that, उच्यताम् may be made known, त्वद्वशे at your command, युक्तम् proper, तत्सैन्यम् this army, आज्ञापयितुम् you may order, अर्हसि you may.

'O tiger among men announce the proper time for action. This army is at your command. Command them.
काममेषामिदं कार्यं विदितं मम तत्त्वतः।

तथापि तु यथातत्त्वमाज्ञापयितुमर्हसि।।4.40.9।।


इदम् this, कार्यम् task, मम to me, तत्त्वतः in principle, एवम् that way, विदितं कामम् is known to me, तथापि even then, यथातत्त्वम् properly, आज्ञापयितुम् to order, अर्हसि you may.

इति ब्रुवाणं सुग्रीवं रामो दशरथात्मजः।

बाहुभ्यां सम्परिष्वज्य इदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।4.40.10।।


दशरथात्मजः Dasaratha's son, रामः Rama, इति thus, ब्रुवाणम् while he spoke, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, बाहुभ्याम् both shoulders, सम्परिष्वज्य hugged, इदं वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

On hearing him, Rama, Dasaratha's son, hugged Sugriva with his arms and said:
ज्ञायतां मम वैदेही यदि जीवति वा न वा।

स च देशो महाप्राज्ञ यस्मिन्वसति रावणः।।4.40.11।।


महाप्राज्ञ O very wise one, मम my, वैदेही Vaidehi, जीवति वा alive or, न वा not or, रावणः Ravana, यस्मिन् in whichever, वसति resides, सः he, देशः in a place, च and, ज्ञायताम् it may be found out.

'O wise warrior I wish to know whether Vaidehi is alive or not. Let the kingdom of Ravana be found out.
अधिगम्य तु वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च।

प्राप्तकालं विधास्यामि तस्मिन्काले सह त्वया।।4.40.12।।


वैदेहीम् Vaidehi,रावणस्य Ravana's, निलयं home, च and, अधिगम्य going there, तस्मिन्काले at that time, त्वयासह in conjunction with you, प्राप्तकालम् at the right time, विधास्यामि I will take action.

'On locating Vaidehi in the kingdom of Ravana I shall take up proper course of action in conjunction with you.
नाहमस्मिन् प्रभुः कार्ये वानरेश न लक्ष्मणः।

त्वमस्य हेतुः कार्यस्य प्रभुश्च प्लवगेश्वर।।4.40.13।।


प्लवगेश्वर O lord of monkeys, वानरेश king of vanaras, अहम् I, अस्मिन् in this, कार्ये in the task, प्रभुः commanders, न not, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, न not, त्वम् you, अस्य of this, कार्यस्य of the task, हेतुः means, प्रभुश्च lord.

'O lord of monkeys neither I nor my brother Lakshmana should command the monkeys. You are the right person to do it.
त्वमेवाऽज्ञापय विभो मम कार्यविनिश्चयम्।

त्वं हि जानासि यत्कार्यं मम वीर न संशयः।।4.40.14।।


विभो O king, मम to me, कार्यविनिश्चयम् understood the task to be performed, त्वमेव you only, आज्ञापय you order, वीर hero, मम my, यत् कार्यम् that task, त्वम् you, जानासि हि you are aware, संशयः doubt न no.

'O king you have understood the task to be performed and, therefore, issue orders without the least hesitation.
सुहृद्वितीयो विक्रान्तः प्राज्ञः कालविशेषवित्।

भवानस्मध्दिते युक्त स्सुकृतार्थोऽर्थवित्तमः।।4.40.15।।


भवान् yourself, सुहृत् friend, द्वितीयो second friend, विक्रान्तः valiant, प्राज्ञः wise, कालविशेषवित् knower of timely action, अस्मध्दिते in our wellbeing, युक्तः capable, सुकृतार्थः strategic planner, अर्थवित्तमः knower of present purpose.

'You are my second friend (Lakshmana being the first). You are valiant as well as wise. You are aware of timely action. You are interested in my wellbeing. You are capable. You know my purpose. You are a startegic planner'. (The present purpose is to plan the course of action. That is artha. Sugriva knows this artha very well).
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो विनतं नाम यूथपम्।

अब्रवीद्रामसान्निध्ये लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः।।4.40.16।।

शैलाभं मेघनिर्घोषमूर्जितं प्लवगेश्वरः।


एवम् in that way, उक्तः having been asked, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, रामसान्निध्ये in the presence of Rama, धीमतः learned, लक्ष्मणस्य च Lakshmana's, यूथपम् a troop leader, शैलाभम् lofty like a mountain, मेघनिर्घोषम् who roared like a thunderous cloud, ऊर्जितम् wellbuilt body, विनतं नाम called Vinata, प्लवगेश्वरम् lord of monkeys, अब्रवीत् said.

'In response to Rama's desire, Sugriva beckoned a troopleader called Vinata who was wellbuilt and lofty like a mountain. And thundering like a cloud, said to him in the presence of Rama and wise Lakshmana:
सोमसूर्यात्मजै स्सार्धं वानरैर्वानरोत्तम।।4.40.17।।

देशकालनयैर्युक्तः कार्या कार्यविनिश्चये।

वृतश्शतसहश्रेण वानराणां तरस्विनाम्।।4.40.18।।

अधिगच्छ दिशं पूर्वां सशैलवनकाननाम्।


वानरोत्तम O foremost of vanaras, देशकालनयैः with political wisdom in accordance with time and place, युक्तः endowed with, कार्यविनिश्चये in taking right decision, सोमसूर्यात्मजै along with sons of Sun and Moon, वानरैः सार्धम् followed by the vanaras, तरस्विनाम् of swift ones, वानराणाम् of vanaras, शतसहस्रेण with one hundred thousand, वृतः surrounded, सशैलवनकाननाम् with mountains, gardens and forests, अधिगच्छ march forward, पूर्वाम् to the eastern, दिशं direction.

'O foremost of the vanaras march forward with the sons of Moon and Sun, followed by one lakh swift monkeys towards the eastern direction full of mountains, gardens, and forests. Endowed with political wisdom, you are capable of taking right decision in accordance with time and place.
तत्र सीतां च वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च।।4.40.19।।

मार्गध्वं गिरिशृङ्गेषु वनेषु च नदीषु च।


तत्र there, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, सीतां च Sita also, रावणस्य Ravana's, निलयं च in the abode, गिरिशृङ्गेषु on the mountain peaks, वनेषु च and in the forests, नदीषु च and river banks, मार्गध्वम् you may search for.

'Search for Sita in the abode of Ravana, on mountain peaks and river banks and in forests.
नदीं भागीरथीं रम्यां सरयूं कौशिकीं तथा।।4.40.20।।

कालिन्दीं यमुनां रम्यां यामुनं च महागिरिम्।

सरस्वतीं च सिन्धुं च शोणं मणिनिभोदकम्।।4.40.21।।

महीं कालमहीं चैव शैलकाननशोभिताम्।

ब्रह्ममालान्विदेहांश्च मालवान्कालिकोसलान्।।4.40.22।।

मागधांश्च महाग्रामान्पुण्ड्रांन्वङ्गां स्तथैव च।

पत्तनं कोशकाराणां भूमिं च रजताकराम्।।4.40.23।।


भागीरथीं नदीम् river Bhagirathi, रम्याम् beautiful, सरयूम् Sarayu, तथा so also, कौशिकीम् Kausiki, कालिन्दी Kalindi, रम्याम् picturesque, यमुनाम् Yamuna, यामुनम् found near Yamuna, महागिरिं च great mountain, सरस्वतीं च and Saraswati, सिन्धुं च and Sindhu, मणिनिभोदकम् with crystalclear water, शोणम् Sona, महीम् Mahim, शैलकाननशोभिताम् picturesque with mountains and forests, कालमहीं चैव and at Kalamahi, ब्रह्ममालान् Brahmamala, विदेहांश्च and Videha, मालवान् Malava, काशिकोसलान् Kasi and Kosala, मागधान् belonging to Maghada, महाग्रामान् च and great villages, पुण्ड्रान् and Pundra, तथैव च in the same order, आङ्गान् Anga, कोशकाराणाम् country of silkworms, भूमिम् kingdom, रजताकराम् silver caves, भूमिं च and the land, मार्गध्वम् you may search for.

'Look for Sita in the beautiful places on rivers Bhagirathi, Sarayu, Kausiki and Kalindi, on the great mountains adjacent to river Yamuna, banks of rivers Saraswati, Sindhu, Sona with crystalclear waters, the country of Mahim and Kalamahi adorned with mountains and forests. Proceed to Brahmamala, Videha, Malava, Kasi, Kosala and Maghada with great villages, the country of Pundram, Vanga, the country famous for silk worms and the land with silver caves. (It is the eastern direction of river Saravati between Himavat and Vindhya and not east of Kiskinda)
सर्वमेतद्विचेतव्यं मृगयद्भिस्ततस्ततः।

रामस्य दयितां भार्यां सीतां दशरथस्नुषाम्।।4.40.24।।


रामस्य Rama's, दयिताम् dear, भार्याम् wife, दशरथस्नुषाम् daughterinlaw of Dasaratha, सीताम् Sita, ततस्ततः in all places, मृगयद्भि: by searching, तत् सर्वम् all over, विचेतव्यम् search should be made.

'Search all over the place looking carefully here and there for Sita the beloved consort of Rama, daughterinlaw of Dasaratha.
समुद्रमवगाढांश्च पर्वतान्पत्तनानि च।

मन्दरस्य च ये कोटिं संश्रिताः केचिदायताम्।।4.40.25।।

कर्णप्रावरणाश्चैव तथा चाप्योष्ठकर्णकाः।

घोरलोहमुखाश्चैव जवनाश्चैकपादकाः।।4.40.26।।

अक्षया बलवन्तश्च पुरुषाः पुरुषादकाः।

किराताः कर्ण चूडाश्च हेमाङ्गा: प्रियदर्शनाः।।4.40.27।।

आममीनाशनास्तत्र किराता द्वीपवासिनः।

अन्तर्जलचरा घोरा नरव्याघ्रा इति शृताः।।4.40.28।।

एतेषामाश्रयास्सर्वे विचेयाः कावनौकसः।

गिरिभिर्ये च गम्यन्ते प्लवनेन प्लवेन च।।4.40.29।।


काननौकसः inhabitants of the forests, समुद्रम् the oceans, अवगाढान् deep pits, पर्वतानि on the mountains,पत्तनानि च and towns, मन्दरस्य on Mandara mountain, आयताम् living, कोटिम् broad peaks, संश्रिताः taken shelter, केचित् some, कर्णप्रावरणाश्चैव who cover their ears, ओष्ठकर्णकाः who have ears on lips, घोरलोहमुखाश्चैव who have iron faces, जवनाः of great speed, एकपादकाः with one foot, अक्षयाः who cannot be destroyed, बलवन्तश्च powerful people, पुरुषाः men, पुरुषादकाः cannibals, किराताः Kiratas, आकर्ण चूडाः with hair reaching their ears, प्रियदर्शनाः of pleasing appearance, हेमाङ्गाः of goldencolour limbs, आममीनाशनाः eating uncooked fish, द्वीपवासिनः residents of island, किराताः Kiratas, इति thus, शृताः it is
heard, अन्तर्जलचराः moving under water, घोराः fierce ones, नरव्याघ्राः tiger among men, एतेषाम् of them, सर्वे all, आश्रयाः shelters, विचेयाः should be searched, ये those, गिरिभिः by moutains, प्लवनेन leaping animals, प्लवनेन च and jumping, गम्यन्ते should go and search.

'There are people who have taken shelter in the deep pits in the midst of the sea, in deep valleys, mountains, cities and broad peaks of Mandara mountain and forests.All those regions should be thoroughly searched. There are innumerable inhabitants,such as strong cannibals, some who cover their ears, some who have ears extended up to the lips, some with dreadful metallic faces, some swiftmoving, onefooted indestructible beings. There are Kirata tribes of golden complexion and handsome looks whose tuft of hair is set to the sides so that it touches their ears. These Kiratas are Islanddwellers and they eat uncooked fish.They move in waters and are fierce, known as tigerlike men (Naravyagras because half of their body is human and other half is tiger in form). All the shelters of these forestdwellers should be searched well.Those who can be sent by crossing mountains, those who can leap (in air) and those who can swim through waters may be also dispatched.
रत्नवन्तं यवद्वीपं सप्तराज्योपशोभितम्।

सुवर्णरूप्यकं चैव सुवर्णाकरमण्डितम्।।4.40.30।।

यवद्वीपमतिक्रम्य शिशिरो नाम पर्वतः।

दिवं स्पृशति शृङ्गेण देवदानवसेवितः।।4.40.31।।

एतेषां गिरिदुर्गेषु प्रपातेषु वनेषु च।

मार्गध्वं सहितास्सर्वे रामपत्नीं यशस्विनीम्।।4.40.32।।


सप्तराज्योपशोभितम् prosperous and divided into seven kingdoms, यवद्वीपम् island of Java, सुवर्णाकरमण्डितम् glittering with gold mines, सुवर्णरूप्यकं चैव island of gold and silver, रत्नवन्तम् rich in gems, यवद्वीपम् island of Java, अतिक्रम्य going beyond, शिशिरोनाम Sisira by name, देवदानवसेवितः frequented by gods and demons, पर्वतः mountains, शृङ्गेण with a peak, दिवम् sky, स्पृशति touching, सर्वे all, सहिताः together, एतेषाम् of those, गिरिदुर्गेषु inaccesible mountains, प्रपातेषु at water falls, वनेषु च and in forests, यशस्विनीम् famed, रामपन्तीम् Rama's wife, मार्गध्वम् search for.

'Go beyond Java island filled with precious gems. It has seven kingdoms. It is adorned with gold and silver mines in abundance. There is a mountain Sisira (abode of Garuda) beyond Java Island. It touches the sky with its lofty cliffs. Gods and demons visit this mountain. You may look for illustrious Rama's consort in these inaccessible mountains, waterfalls and forests.
ततो रक्तजलं शोणमगाधं शीघ्रगामिनम्।

गत्वा पारं समुद्रस्य सिद्धचारणसेवितम्।।4.40.33।।

तस्य तीर्थेषु रम्येषु विचित्रेषु वनेषु च।

रावण स्सह वैदेह्या मार्गितव्यस्ततस्ततः।।4.40.34।।


ततः then, रक्तजलम् having red coloured water, शीघ्रगामिनम् fastflowing, शोणमगाधम् deep river Sona, (प्राप्य after reaching there), समुद्रस्य ocean's, सिद्धचारणसेवितम् inhabited by Siddhas and Charanas, पारम् to the opposite side, गत्वा on going, तस्य its, रम्येषु in delightful, तीर्थेषु in rivers, वचित्रेषु wonderful, वनेषु च and forests, ततस्ततः here and there, वैदेह्या along with Vaidehi, रावणः Ravana, मार्गितव्यः should be sought for.

'Therefrom reach out to the swiftflowing river Sona which has redcoloured waters. Then crossing the sea which is the abode of Siddhas and Charanas search the different rivers reaching the sea, and the picturesque and wonderful forests to trace the abode of Ravana who has stolen Sita.
तत स्समुद्रद्वीपांश्च सुभीमान्द्रष्टुमर्हथ।

ऊर्मिमन्तं समुद्रं च क्रोशन्तमनिलोद्धतम्।।4.40.35।।


ततः then, सुभीमान् fierce, समुद्रद्वीपांश्च islands of the ocean, समुद्रं च and the ocean, अनिलोद्धतम् swept by wind, क्रोशन्तम् roaring, ऊर्मिमन्तम् stirred up by waves, द्रष्टुम् to see, अर्हथ it is proper for you.

'Then you may continue your search in the frightening islands of the sea as well as the sea which roars when stirred up by the wind.
तत्रासुरा महाकायाश्छायां गृह्णन्ति नित्यशः।

ब्रह्मणा समनुज्ञाता दीर्घकालं बुभुक्षिताः।।4.40.36।।


तत्र there, दीर्घकालम् for a long time, बुभुक्षिताः very hungry people, महाकायाः those of huge body, असुराः demons, ब्रह्मणा by Brahma, समनुज्ञाताः have been permitted, नित्यम् ever, छायाम् shadow, गृह्णन्ति will be catching.

'Demons of huge bodies catch the shadows of passersby in that place as they have been hungry for long and have the permission of Brahma to do so.
तं कालमेघप्रतिमं महोरगनिषेवितम्।

अभिगम्य महानादं तीर्थेनैव महोदधिम्।।4.40.37।।

ततो रक्तजलं भीमं लोहितं नाम सागरम्।

गत्वा प्रेक्ष्यथ तां चैव बृहतीं कूटशाल्मलीम्।।4.40.38।।


कालमेघप्रतिमम् looking like black clouds at the time of dissolution, महोरगनिषेवितम् inhabited by great serpents, महानादम् roaring, महोदधिम् great ocean, रक्तजलं with red colured water, तीर्थेनैव through the river bank, अभिगम्य after reaching there, लोहितं नाम called Lohita, सागरम् sea, गत्वा going there, बृहतीम् a huge one, ताम् that one, कूटशाल्मलीम् Salmali tree (silkcotton tree), प्रेक्ष्यथ seeing, चैव also.

'Reach out to the great roaring ocean which looks like a black cloud at the time of dissolution, inhabited by great serpents.Go through the bank of the river, and touch the frightening sea named Lohita of red coloured water.You will see a huge silkcotton tree in that place.
गृहं च वैनतेयस्य नानारत्नविभूषितम्।

तत्र कैलाससङ्काशं विहितं विश्वकर्मणा।।4.40.39।।


तत्र there, नानारत्नविभूषितम् adorned with diffrent kinds of gems, कैलाससङ्काशम् looking
like the Kailasa mountain, विश्वकर्मणा by Visvakarma, विहितम् constructed, वैनतेयस्य Garuda's, गृहम् house, च also.

'You would see there a house of Garuda constructed by Visvakarma. It looks like the Kailasa mountain and is adorned with different kinds of gems.
तत्र शैलनिभा भीमा मन्देहा नाम राक्षसाः।

शैलशृङ्गेषु लम्बन्ते नानारूपा भयावहाः।।4.40.40।।


तत्र there, शैलशृङ्गेषु on the mountain cliffs, शैलनिभा: huge as mountain, भीमाः frightening, नानारूपाः of different forms, भयावहाः fearsome, मन्देहाः नाम called Mandehas, राक्षसाः demons, लम्बन्ते will be hanging down.

'There are frightening demons called Mandehas of different forms, fearsome as huge mountains hanging down the mountain peaks.
ते पतन्ति जले नित्यं सूर्यस्योदयनं प्रति।

निहता ब्रह्मतेजोभिरहन्यहनि राक्षसाः।।4.40.41।।

अभितप्ताश्च सूर्येण लम्बन्ते स्म पुनः पुनः।


ते those, राक्षसाः demons, अहन्यहनि every day, सूर्योदयनं प्रति at the time of Sunrise, नित्यम् always, सूर्येण by the Sun's heat, अभितप्ताः scorched, ब्रह्मतेजोभिः by the power of mantras recited by brahmins, निहताः dead, जले in water, पतन्ति drop down, पुनः पुनः again and again, लम्बन्ते स्म keep hanging on.

'Those demons keep dropping down in water at the time of Sunrise every day, by the power of Gayatri mantras recited by brahmins scorched by the heat of the Sun. Again and again they keep hanging on to the cliffs.
ततः पाण्डुरमेघाभं क्षीरोदं नाम सागरम्।।4.40.42।।

गत्वा द्रक्ष्यथ दुर्धर्षा मुक्ताहारमिवोर्मिभिः।


दुर्धर्षाः one who is unassailable by the enemies, ततः then, गत्वा after going, पाण्डुरमेघाभम् appearing like white clouds, ऊर्मिभिः white waves, मुक्ताहारमिव like pearl chain, क्षीरोदं नाम milky ocean by name, सागरम् ocean, द्रक्ष्यथ you will see.

'You who are unassailable by the enemies, will see the milky ocean appearing like clouds, resembling a pearl necklace with its rows of waves.
तस्य मध्ये महान् श्वेतो ऋषभो नाम पर्वतः।।4.40.43।।

दिव्यगन्धैः कुसुमितै राजितैश्च नगैर्वृतः।

सरश्च राजतैः पद्मैर्ज्वलितैर्हेमकेसरैः।।4.40.44।।

नाम्ना सुदर्शनं नाम राजहंसैस्समाकुलम्।


तस्य मध्ये in the middle, दिव्यगन्धैः with wonderful fragrances, कुसुमितैः flowering, राजितैः glowing, नगैः with mountains, वृतः surrounded, ऋषभो नाम called Rishaba, श्वेतः white, पर्वतः mountain, ज्वलितैः with glittering, हेमकेसरैः with golden filaments, राजतैः with silver, पद्मैः with lotuses, राजहंसैः with royal swans, समाकुलम् surrounded, नाम्ना known as, सुदर्शनं नाम called Sudarsana, सरश्च lake.

'In the midst of that ocean stands a majestic white mountain named Rishaba surrounded by trees filled with silver flowers emitting wonderful fragrance.There is also a lake named Sudarsana with glittering silver lotuses having gleaming golden filaments. Royal swans inhabit these surroundings.
विबुधाश्चारणा यक्षाः किन्नराश्चाप्सरोगणाः।।4.40.45।।

हृष्टास्समभिगच्छन्ति नलिनीं तां रिरंसवः।


विबुधाः deities, चारणाः charanas, यक्षाः yakshas, किन्नराश्च even kinneras, अप्सरोगणाः groups of apasaras, हृष्टाः joyfully, रिरंसवः those desirous of strolling, तां that, नलिनीम् lotus pond, समभिगच्छन्ति keep coming.

'The deities, called charanas, yakshas and kinneras, also apsarasas keep coming
there to stoll by that lotus pond.
क्षीरोदं समतिक्रम्य तदा द्रक्ष्यथ वानराः।।4.40.46।।

जलोदं सागरं शीघ्रं सर्वभूतभयावहम्।


वानराः O monkeys, क्षीरोदम् milky ocean, समतिक्रम्य going beyond, सर्वभूतभयावहम् most dreadful to all creatures, जलोदम् ocean, सागरम् sea, शीघ्रं swiftly, तदा then, द्रक्ष्यथ you will see.

'O monkeys going beyond the milky ocean you will see the seas most dreadful to all creatures.
तत्र तत्कोपजं तेजः कृतं हयमुखं महत्।।4.40.47।।

अस्याहुस्तन्महावेगमोदनं सचराचरम्।


तत्र there, तत्कोपजम् born out of his anger, महत् great, हयमुखम् face of horse, तेजः bright, कृतम् is created, सचराचरम् both movable and immovable creatures, महावेगम् very fast, तत् that, अस्य its, ओदनम् food, आहुः they said.

'Here is born Hayamukha, out of the fastspreading fire of anger of the ocean. Its movable and immovable creatures constitute his food.
तत्र विक्रोशतां नादो भूतानां सागरौकसाम्।।4.40.48।।

श्रूयते च समर्थानां दृष्ट्वा तद्बडबामुखम्।


तत्र there, तत् that, बडबामुखम् burning face of Vadava, दृष्ट्वा seeing, असमर्थानाम् of the weak, विक्रोशताम् crying loudly, सागरौकसाम् dwelling in the sea, भूतानाम् of creatures, नादः sound, श्रूयते is heard.

'You can hear the sounds of helpless oceanic creatures crying loudly on seeing the burning face of Vadava.
स्वादूदस्योत्तरे देशे योजनानि त्रयोदश।।4.40.49।।

जातरूपशिलो नाम महान्कनकपर्वतः।


स्वादूदस्य of the ocean of tasty water, उत्तरे देशे the north direction, त्रयोदश thirteen, योजनानि yojanas, महान् huge, कनकपर्वतः golden mountain, जातरूपशिलो नाम called Jatarupasila.

'Thirteen yojanas to the north of this ocean of pure waters is a huge golden mountain called Jatarupasila.
तत्र चन्द्रप्रतीकाशं पन्नगं धरणीधरम्।।4.40.50।।

पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षं ततो द्रक्ष्यथ वानराः।

आसीनं पर्वतस्याग्रे सर्वभूतनमस्कृतम्।।4.40.51।।

सहस्रशिरसं देवमनन्तं नीलवाससम्।


वानराः O monkeys, ततः then, तत्र there, पर्वतस्य mountain's, अग्रे on the top, आसीनम् seated, चन्द्रप्रतीकाशम् resembling the Moon in brightness, पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षम् of large eyes like lotus petals, सर्वभूतनमस्कृतम् revered by all beings, सहस्रशिरसम् thousandheaded, नीलवाससम् robed in blue cloth, देवम् worshipped, धरणीधरम् bearing the load of the earth, अनन्तम् Ananta, पन्नगम् serpent, द्रक्ष्यथ you will see.

'O monkeys on top of the mountain you will see Ananta, a thousandhooded serpent seated, as bright as the Moon, robed in blue, with large eyes like lotus petals bearing the load of the earth, and revered by all beings.
त्रिशिराः काञ्चनः केतुस्तालस्तस्य महात्मनः।।4.40.52।।

स्थापितः पर्वतस्याग्रे विराजति सवेदिकः।


महात्मनः highsouled, तस्य पर्वतस्य of that mountain, अग्रे on top, स्थापितः is fixed, केतुः flag of Ananta, त्रिशिराः triplecrowned, काञ्चनः golden, सवेदिकः with an altar, तालः Tala,
विराजति shining.

'Highsouled Ananta's flag is a threeheaded golden palm tree shining on an altar on top of the mountain.
पूर्वस्यां दिशि निर्माणं कृतं तत् त्रिदशेश्वरैः।।4.40.53।।

ततः परं हेममय श्श्रीमानुदयपर्वतः।

तस्य कोटिर्दिवं स्पृष्ट्वा शतयोजनमायता।।4.40.54।।

जातरूपमयी दिव्या विराजति सवेदिका।


तत् that, निर्माणम् arrangement , पूर्वस्यां दिशि in the eastern quarter, त्रिदशेश्वरैः by the gods, कृतम् done, ततः परम् beyond that, हेममयः full of gold, श्रीमान् famous, उदयपर्वतः mountain behind which the sun rises, तस्य its, जातरूपमयी golden, दिव्या divine, सवेदिका that altar, शतयोजनम् a hundred yojanas, आयता long, कोटिः the edge, दिवम् sky, स्पृष्ट्वा touching, विराजति shining.

'The flag of Ananta is fixed by the gods in the eastern direction. Beyond that stands the famous golden mountain behind which the sun rises. Its golden peak with a divine altar spread over a hundred yojanas touches heaven.
सालैस्तालैस्तमालैश्च कर्णिकारैश्च पुष्पितैः।।4.40.55।।

जातरूपमयैर्दिव्यै श्शोभते सूर्यसन्निभैः।


जातरूपमयैः golden form, दिव्यैः divine, सूर्यसन्निभैः resembling the Sun, पुष्पितैः flowering, सालैः with salas, तालैः with palmyras, तमालैश्च with tamalas, कर्णिकारैश्च with karnikaras also, शोभते enchanting.

'The place looks beautiful with salas, palmyras, tamalas and karnikara trees in full bloom. These golden, divine flowers shine like the Sungod.
तत्र योजनविस्तारमुच्छ्रितं दशयोजनम्।।4.40.56।।

शृङ्गं सौमनसं नाम जातरूपमयं ध्रुवम्।


तत्र there, योजनविस्तारम् spread over a yojana, दशयोजनम् ten yojanas, उच्छ्रितम् tall, जातरूपमयम् golden, ध्रुवम् certainly, सौमनसं नाम called Saumanasa, शृङ्गम् peak.

'There is a huge golden peak called Saumanas of ten yojanas in height spread over a breadth of one yojana.
तत्रपूर्वं पदं कृत्वा पुरा विष्णुस्त्रिविक्रमे।।4.40.57।।

द्वितीयं शिखरे मेरोश्चकार पुरुषोत्तमः।


पुरुषोत्तमः supreme being, विष्णुः Visnu, पुरा formerly, त्रिविक्रमे taking three strides, पूर्वम् first, तत्र there, पदम् foot, कृत्वा after that, द्वितीयम् second, मेरोः Meru's, शिखरे on the peak, चकार placed.

'When the supreme being, Visnu took his three strides as Lord Vamana, he placed his first foot on this peak and the second on the peak of mount Meru.
त्तरेण परिक्रम्य जम्बूद्वीपं दिवाकरः।।4.40.58।।

दृश्यो भवति भूयिष्ठं शिखरं तन्महोच्छ्रयम्।


दिवाकरः Sun, जम्बूद्वीपं उत्तरेण north of Jambu island, परिक्रम्य circumambulating, महोच्छ्रयम् very tall, तत् that, शिखरम् peak, भूयिष्ठम् greatly, दृश्यः is seen, भवति will be.

'The Sun circumabulates Jambu island and when he arrives at this lofty cliff of the mountain, it takes the northern direction and becomes visible to the world.
तत्र वैखानसा नाम वालखिल्या महर्षयः।।4.40.59।।

प्रकाशमाना दृश्यन्ते सूर्यवर्णास्तपस्विनः।


तत्र there, सूर्यवर्णाः those with the lustre of the Sungod, तपस्वीनः great ascetics, वैखानसा
नाम named Vaikhanasas, वालखिल्याः महर्षयः Valakhilya sages, प्रकाशमानाः radiating, दृश्यन्ते appear.

'Over there the great ascetics Vaikhanasas and Valakhilyas appear like the radiating Sun.
अयं सुदर्शनो द्वीपः पुरो यस्य प्रकाशते।।4.40.60।।

यस्मिं स्तेजश्च चक्षुश्च सर्वप्राणभृतामपि।


यस्य its, पुरः in front of, सर्वप्राणभृतामपि for all beings, चक्षुश्च the (ability to see with) eye, प्रकाशते shines, तत् that, तेजः glow, यस्मिन् therefore, अयम् this, सुदर्शनः द्वीपः island of Sudarsana.

'The region in front of this mountain is called Sudarsana Island. This island is where the Sun who gives all beings the ability to see rises.
शैलस्य तस्य शृङ्गेषु कन्दरेषु वनेषु च।।4.40.61।।

रावणस्सह वैदेह्या मार्गितव्यस्ततस्ततः।


तस्य शैलस्य of that mountain, शृङ्गेषु on the peak, कन्दरेषु in the caves, वनेषु च in the forests, ततस्ततः here and there, रावणः Ravana, वैदेह्यासह with Vaidehi, मार्गितव्यः may be looked for.

You should search for Ravana and Vaidehi on the peak of that mountain, in the caves, in the forests here and there.
काञ्चनस्य च शैलस्य सूर्यस्य च महात्मनः।।4.40.62।।

आविष्टा तेजसा सन्ध्या पूर्वा रक्ता प्रकाशते।


काञ्चनस्य of the golden, शैलस्य mountain's, महात्मनः of the great, सूर्यस्य च and Sun's, तेजसा with brightness, आविष्टा filled, पूर्वा सन्ध्या early morning twilight, रक्ता red in colour, प्रकाशते will be glowing.

'The early morning twilight appears bright red because of the glow of the golden mountain as well as of the great Sungod.
पूर्वमेतत्कृतं द्वारं पृथिव्या भुवनस्य च।।4.40.63।।

सूर्यस्योदयनं चैव पर्वा ह्येषा दिगुच्यते।


पूर्वम् east, एतत् this, पृथिव्याः earth's, भुवनस्य for the world, द्वारम् entrance, सूर्यस्य Sun's, उदयनं च rise also, कृतम् was made, एषा this, पूर्वा दिक् eastern direction, उच्यते is being called.

'Here is the entrance for the earth as well as for all the worlds and since the Sun also rises from this place it is called the eastern direction.
तस्य शैलस्य पृष्ठेषु निर्झरेषु गुहासु च।।4.40.64।।

रावण स्सह वैदेह्या मार्गितव्यस्ततस्ततः।


तस्य शैलस्य this mountain's, पृष्ठेषु on the plain land, निर्झरेषु by the mountain streams, गुहासु च and in caves, वैदेह्या सह along with Vaidehi, रावणः Ravana, ततस्ततः all over, मार्गितव्यः should be searched.

'You may look for Ravana and also for Vaidehi even behind the mountain on the plains and also near the mountain streams and caves all over.
ततः परमगम्या स्याद्दिक्पूर्वा त्रिदशावृता।।4.40.65।।

रहिता चन्द्रसूर्याभ्यामदृश्या तिमिरावृता।


ततः परम् beyond that, त्रिदशावृता guarded by gods, चन्द्रसूर्याभ्याम् by Moon and Sun, रहिता not present, तिमिर darkness, आवृता pervaded by, पूर्वादिक् eastern direction, अगम्या स्यात् not possible to reach, अदृश्या invisible.

'Beyond, there is no Sun or Moon. Darkness pervades. It is neither accessible nor
visible. It is guarded by the gods.
शैलेषु तेषु सर्वेषु कन्दरेषु वनेषु च।।4.40.66।।

ये च नोक्ता मया देशा विचेया तेषु जानकी।


तेषु among those, शैलेषु on the mountains, सर्वेषु everywhere, कन्दरेषु in the caves, वनेषु च in the forests, मया my, ये those, देशाः spots, नोक्ताः not mentioned, तेषु in those places, जानकी Janaki, विचेया should be searched.

'You should look for Janaki everywhere -- on the mountains, in the lakes and in the places not indicated by me.
एतावद्वानरैश्शक्यं गन्तुं वानरपुङ्गवाः।।4.40.67।।

अभास्करममर्यादं न जानीमस्ततः परम्।


वानरपुङ्गवाः O chieftains of monkeys, एतावत् till there, वानरैः by monkeys, गन्तुम् to go, शक्यम् is possible, अभास्करम् where there is no Sunlight, अमर्यादं च devoid of boundaries, ततः परम् beyond that, न जानीमः is not known to us.

'O chieftains monkeys can go that far. We know not what lies beyond those boundaries where no Sun shines.
अधिगम्य तु वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च।।4.40.68।।

मासे पूर्णे निवर्तध्वमुदयं प्राप्य पर्वतम्।


उदयं पर्वतम् the mountain behind which the sun rises, प्राप्य after reaching, वैदेहीम् for Vaidehi, रावणस्य Ravana's, निलयं च home, अधिगम्य after reaching, मासे in one month, पूर्णे before completion, निवर्तध्वम् you may return.

'Reaching the mountain behind which the sun rises, look for Vaidehi and the home of Ravana and return by the month's end.
ऊर्ध्वं मासान्न वस्तव्यं वसन्वध्यो भवेन्मम।।4.40.69।।

सिद्धार्थास्सन्निवर्तध्वमधिगम्य तु मैथिलीम्।


मासात् ऊर्ध्वम् beyond one month, न वस्तव्यम् you should not stay away, वसन् while one stays, मम to me, वध्यः will be killed, सिद्धार्थाः accomplishing the goal, मैथिलीम् Maithili, अधिगम्य reaching, सन्निवर्तध्वम् return.

'If you do not report within one month, you will be killed. May you see Maithili and come back after reaching the goal.
महेन्द्रकान्तां वनषण्डमण्डितां

दिशं चरित्वा निपुणेन वानराः।

अवाप्य सीतां रघुवंशजप्रियां

ततो निवृत्तास्सुखिनो भविष्यथ।।4.40.70।।


वानराः O monkeys, महेन्द्रकान्ताम् Indra's beloved, वनषण्डमण्डिताम् bestowed with different kinds of forests and groves, दिशम् quarter, निपुणेन carefully, चरित्वा after going about, रघुवंशजप्रियाम् Rama's beloved, सीताम् Sita, अवाप्य after finding, ततः then, निवृत्ताः returning, सुखिनः happy ones, भविष्यथ you will be.

'O monkeys go about the beloved quarter (east) of Indra bestowed with differnt kinds of forests and groves. Look out carefully for Rama's beloved Sita, spot her and return, you will live happily.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकांडे चत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the fortieth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
