[Description of the enchanting environs of Pampa --- dejected Rama laments --- Lakshmana urges Rama to pick up courage --- Rama and Lakshmana proceed towards Rishyamuka --- Sugriva sees Rama and Lakshmana and gets alarmed]

sa tāṅ puṣkariṇīṅ gatvā padmōtpalajhaṣākulām.

rāmassaumitri sahitō vilalāpākulēndriyaḥ৷৷4.1.1৷৷


saumitrisahitaḥ together with Saumitri, saḥ that, rāmaḥ Rama, padmōtpalajhaṣākulām filled with lotuses, lilies and fishes, puṣkariṇīm to the lake, gatvā arrived, ākulēndriyaḥ one (Rama) who is with afflicted senses, vilalāpa lamented.

Arriving with Laksmana at the lake filled with lotuses, lilies and fishes, Rama, his senses oppressed, burst into tears.
tasya dṛṣṭvaiva tāṅ harṣādindriyāṇi cakampirē.

sa kāmavaśamāpannassaumitrimidamabravīt৷৷4.1.2৷৷


tasya there, tām that, dṛṣṭvaiva on sighting, harṣāt out of joy, indriyāṇi senses, cakampirē shook, saḥ he, kāmavaśa obsessed with love for Sita, āpannaḥ gone, saumitrim to Saumitri, idam this, in the following manner, abravīt said.

He was glad to see it but sad at the thought of Sita. His passion stirred, his senses shaken, he said this to Saumitri:
saumitrē! śōbhatē pampā vaidūryavimalōdakā.

phullapadmōtpalavatī śōbhitā vividhairdrumaiḥ৷৷4.1.3৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri,vai2dū2ryavimalōdakā water clear as Vaidurya, phullapadmōtpalavatī with lilies and lotuses in bloom, vividhaiḥ with varieties of, drumaiḥ trees, śōbhitā adorned with, pampā Pampa lake, śōbhatē looks beautiful

'O Saumitri! Pampa looks beautiful with its water clear as vaidurya, its lilies and lotuses in full bloom and its trees in all their variety.
saumitrē! paśya pampāyāḥ kānanaṅ śubhadarśanam.

yatra rājanti śailā vā drumāssaśikharā iva৷৷4.1.4৷৷


saumitrē! O Saumitri, pampāyāḥ of Pampa, śubhadarśanam pleasant (view) to the eyes, kānanam forest, paśya look see, yatra where, drumāḥ trees, saśikharāḥ with high branches, śailāḥ mountains iva like, rājanti glitter (appear splendid)

'O Saumitri! look at the pleasant forest around Pampa where trees stand splendid like mountain-peaks.
māṅ tu śōkābhisantaptaṅ mādhavaḥ pīḍayanti vai.

bharatasya ca duḥkhēna vaidēhyā haraṇēna ca৷৷4.1.5৷৷


bharatasya duḥkhēna Bharata's sorrow, vaidēhyā haraṇēna Vaidehi's abduction, śōkābhisantaptam tormented with sorrow, māṅ tu me indeed, mādhavaḥ spring, pīḍayanti is tormenting.

Already saddened due to the abduction of Sita and plight of Bharata, I am tormented by Spring.
śōkārtasyāpi mē pampā śōbhatē citrakānanā.

vyavakīrṇā bahuvidhaiḥ puṣpaiśśītōdakā śivā৷৷4.1.6৷৷


citrakānanā by the wonderful forest, bahuvidhaiḥ many kinds, puṣpaiḥ flowers, vyavakīrṇāḥ scattered with, śītōdakāḥ cool water, śivā auspicious, pampā Pampa, śōkārtasyāpi though stricken with grief, mē to me, śōbhatē delightful

Though stricken with grief, I feel so delighted to see the auspicious Pampa with its wonderful forest and cool water scattered with flowers.
nalinairapi sañchannā hyatyarthaśubhadarśanā.

sarpavyālānucaritā mṛgadvijasamākulā৷৷4.1.7৷৷


nalinaiḥ with lotuses, hiḥ sañchannāḥ indeed covered with, atyartha śubhadarśanā extremely beautiful sarpavyālānucaritā with vicious serpents moving about, mṛgadvijasamākulā abounding in beasts and birds

Abounding in lotuses, birds and beasts and vicious serpents moving about, it looks splendid indeed.
adhikaṅ pravibhātyētannīlapītaṅ tu śādvalam.

drumāṇāṅ vividhaiḥ puṣpaiḥ paristōmairivārpitam৷৷4.1.8৷৷


drumāṇām of the trees, vividhaiḥ puṣpaiḥ with variety of flowers, paristōmairiva like a carpet, arpitam spread, ētat this, nīlapītam bluish-yellow, śādvalam grass, adhikam very much, pravibhāti- shines brightly.

The bluish-yellow grass, dotted with different kinds of flowers fallen from the trees shines like a carpet spread.
puṣpabhārasamṛddhāni śikharāṇi samantataḥ.

latābhiḥ puṣpitāgrābhirupagūḍhāni sarvaśaḥ৷৷4.1.9৷৷


samantataḥ all over, puṣpabhārasamṛddhāni trees abundantly loaded with flowers, śikharāṇi tree-tops,
puṣpitāgrābhiḥ with flowers in bloom, latābhiḥ by creepers, sarvaśaḥ everywhere, upagūḍhāni entwined / covered

Entwined with flowering creepers the tree-tops are covered all over with rich loads of flowers.
sukhānilō.yaṅ saumitrē! kālaḥ pracuramanmathaḥ.

gandhavānsurabhirmāsō jātapuṣpaphaladrumaḥ৷৷4.1.10৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, sukhānilaḥ gentle breeze, ayaṅ kālaḥ at this time, pracuramanmathaḥ ecstatic, jātapuṣpaphaladrumaḥ trees filled with flowers and fruits, surabhirmāsaḥ Spring Season (Chaitra, the first Month of Indian calendar), gandhavān fragrant

'O Saumitri! it is the season of spring. The trees are laden with fruits and fragrant flowers. Ecstatic blows the gentle freeze.
paśya rūpāṇi saumitrē! vanānāṅ puṣpaśālinām.

sṛjatāṅ puṣpavarṣāṇi tōyaṅ tōyamucāmiva৷৷4.1.11৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, puṣpavarṣāṇi showers of flowers, sṛjatām sending forth, puṣpaśālinām vanānām of flowering trees, tōyaṅ water, tōyamucāmiva like water-bearing clouds, rūpāṇi scenery (forms), paśya look

'Look at the flowering trees sending showers of flowers like water dropping from the clouds, O Saumitri!
prastarēṣu ca ramyēṣu vividhāḥ kānanadrumāḥ.

vāyuvēgapracalitāḥ puṣpairavakiranti gām৷৷4.1.12৷৷


ramyēṣu on beautiful, prastarēṣu on the rocky-land, vividhāḥ different kinds of, kānanadrumāḥ forest- trees, vāyuvēgapracalitāḥ shaken by the force of wind, puṣpaiḥ with flowers, gām the earth, avakiranti spreading all over

Various forest trees shaken by the force of the wind scatter flowers on the beautiful rocky surface of earth.
patitaiḥ patamānaiśca pādapasthaiśca mārutaḥ.

kusumaiḥ paśya saumitrē! krīḍanniva samantataḥ৷৷4.1.13৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, patitaiḥ fallen down, pādapasthaiśca found on the trees, patamānai: about to drop, kusumaiḥ with flowers, mārutaḥ wind, samantataḥ all over, krīḍanniva as if playing, paśya see

O Saumitri! look, the breeze appears to be playing with the flowers; that are fallen and that are still on the trees.
vikṣipanvividhāśśākhā nagānāṅ kusumōtkacāḥ.

mārutaścalitasthānaiṣṣaṭpadairanugīyatē৷৷4.1.14৷৷


nagānām of the trees, kusumōtkacāḥ filled with flowers, vividhāḥ several, śākhāḥ branches, vikṣipan shaking, mārutaḥ wind, calitasthānaiḥ by the displaced, ṣaṭpadaiḥ bees, anugīyatē is accompanied with music

mattakōkilasannādairnartayanniva pādapān.

śailakandaraniṣkrāntaḥ pragīta iva cānilaḥ৷৷4.1.15৷৷


śailakandaraniṣkrāntaḥ coming out of the mountain caves, anilaḥ wind, mattakōkilasannādaiḥ with the voices of intoxicated cuckoos, pādapān tress, nartayanniva as if making them dance, pragīta iva ca and as if singing well.

tēna vikṣipatā.tyarthaṅ pavanēna samantataḥ.

amī saṅsaktaśākhāgrā grathitā iva pādapāḥ৷৷4.1.16৷৷


samantataḥ all over, atyartham strong, vikṣipatā shaken, pavanēna by the wind, saṅsaktaśākhāgrāḥ the tops of trees joined together, amī these, pādapāḥ trees, grathitā iva as if knitted together.

'Shaken by the strong wind all over, the tops of trees look as if they are knitted together.
sa ēṣa sukhasaṅsparśō vāti candanaśītalaḥ.

gandhamabhyavahanpuṇyaṅ śramāpanayanō.nilaḥ৷৷4.1.17৷৷


saḥ ēṣa anilaḥ this wind, sukhasaṅsparśaḥ with gentle touch, candanaśītalaḥ cool like sandal, puṇyam pure, gandham fragrance, abhyavahan while carrying, śramāpanayanaḥ removing fatigue, vāti is blowing.

'The gentle touch of the breeze that blows, cool like sandalwood, full of pure fragrance, takes away the fatigue of the body.
amī pavanavikṣiptā vinadantīva pādapāḥ.

ṣaṭpadairanukūjantō vanēṣu madhugandhiṣu৷৷4.1.18৷৷


madhugandhiṣu fragrant with honey, vanēṣu in the forest, pavanavikṣiptāḥ swayed by the wind, amī these, pādapāḥ trees, anukūjanti him, ṣaṭpadaiḥ of bees, vinadantīva as though sounding.

As if the trees are singing, swayed by the wind, while the bees in the forest, fragrant with honey, hum in tune.
giriprasthēṣu ramyēṣu puṣpavadbhirmanōramaiḥ.

saṅsaktaśikharāśśailā virājantē mahādrumaiḥ৷৷4.1.19৷৷


ramyēṣu scenic, giriprasthēṣu mountain ranges, puṣpavadbhiḥ flowers in bloom, manōramaiḥ delightful, mahādrumaiḥ huge trees, saṅsaktaśikharāḥ mountain-peaks touching each other, śailāḥ mountains, virājantē are splendid

'The huge trees in the scenic mountain-ranges look delightful with their blossoms touching the peaks.
puṣpasañchannaśikharā mārutōtkṣēpacañcalāḥ.

amī madhukarōttaṅsāḥ pragītā iva pādapāḥ৷৷4.1.20৷৷


puṣpasañchannaśikharāḥ tree-tops covered with flowers, mārutōtkṣēpacañcalāḥ shaken by the restless wind, madhukarōttaṅsāḥ turbaned by black bees, amī these, pādapāḥ trees, pragītāḥ singing, iva like

With the tops of trees covered with flowers, the black bees hovering (humming) over them, the trees, shaken by the restless wind look like singers. (The trees with the top decked with flowers, the bees like black hair on the head swaying in the wind look like dancing and singing)
supuṣpitāṅstu paśyēmānkarṇikārāṅtsamantataḥ.

hāṭakapratisañchannānnarānpītāmbarāniva৷৷4.1.21৷৷


samantataḥ everywhere, supuṣpitān well blossomed, hāṭakapratisañchannān adorned with golden ornaments, pītāmbarān clad in yellow silk, narāniva like people, ētān these, karṇikārān Karnikara, paśya see.

'See these Karnikaras in full bloom all over, looking like people clad in yellow silk adorned with golden ornaments.
ayaṅ vasantassaumitrē! nānāvihaganāditaḥ.

sītayā viprahīnasya śōkasandīpanō mama৷৷4.1.22৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, nānāvihaganāditaḥ filled with sounds of several kinds of birds, ayaṅ vasantaḥ this spring season, sītayā with Sita, viprahīnasya of a man separated, mama for me, śōkasandīpanaḥ kindles anguish

'O Saumitri! this spring season resonating with the sounds of several kinds of birds, kindles my anguish as I am separated from Sita.
māṅ hi śōkasamākrāntaṅ santāpayati manmathaḥ.

hṛṣṭaḥ pravadamānaśca mamāhvayati kōkilaḥ৷৷4.1.23৷৷


śōkasamākrāntam to one (Rama) who is overcome with sorrow, mām me, manmathaḥ cupid (Manmatha, the god of love), santāpayati torments, hṛṣṭa: happy, pravadamānaḥ making fun, kōkilaḥ cuckoo, mamāhvayati inviting me

'Kandarpa (Cupid) torments me while I am already grief-stricken. The Cuckoo with his challenging cheerfulness mocks me.
ēṣa dātyūhakō hṛṣṭō ramyē māṅ vananirjharē.

praṇadanmanmathāviṣṭaṅ śōcayiṣyati lakṣmaṇa৷৷4.1.24৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, ramyē in a beautiful, vananirjharē in water-fall, hṛṣṭaḥ joyous, praṇadan while clucking, ēṣaḥ this, dātyūhakaḥ a swamp-hen (a marsh-bird), gallinule (water crow), manmathāviṣṭam tormented by love, mām me, śōcayiṣyati is troubling

'Lakshmana, while I am already love-stricken, the swamp-hen (gallinule, a marsh-bird) troubles me with its joyous cackles in the beautiful forest-stream.
śrutvaitasya purā śabdamāśramasthā mama priyā.

māmāhūya pramuditāḥ paramaṅ pratyanandata৷৷4.1.25৷৷


purā earlier, āśramasthā a lady in the hermitage, mama priyā my beloved, ētasya its, śabdam sound,
śrutvā on hearing, pramuditā very gladly, mām to me, āhūya after calling me, paramam greatly, pratyanandata rejoiced

'While in the hermitage in the past, my beloved was very glad to hear such sounds, invite me to join her and rejoice again.
ēvaṅ vicitrāḥ patagā nānārāvavirāviṇaḥ.

vṛkṣagulmalatāḥ paśya sampatanti samantataḥ৷৷4.1.26৷৷


ēvam in this way, vicitrāḥ wonderful, nānārāvavirāviṇaḥ with sounds of different kinds, patagāḥ birds, tatastataḥ here and there, vṛkṣagulmalatāḥ towards trees, shrubs and vines, sampatanti they are flying, paśya you see.

'See, the different kinds of birds flying towards trees, shrubs and vines making wonderful sounds all over.
vimiśrā vihagāḥ pumbhirātmavyūhābhinanditāḥ.

bhṛṅgarājapramuditāssaumitrē! madhurasvanāḥ৷৷4.1.27৷৷


vihagāḥ female birds, pumbhiḥ male birds, vimiśrāḥ united with, ātmavyūhābhinanditāḥ praised by their flock, bhṛṅgarājapramuditāḥ enjoying the sounds of large black bees, madhurasvanāḥ singing sweetly.

'O Lakshmana! the female birds praised by their flocks, are united with their male partners. Enjoying the sweet sounds of large black bees, they are singing melodiously.
dātyūharativikrandaiḥ puṅskōkilarutairapi.

svananti pādapāścēmē mamānaṅgapradīpanāḥ৷৷4.1.28৷৷


pādapāścēmē these trees, dātyūharativikrandaiḥ by the cackles of swamp-hens, puṅskōkilarutairapi and also by the voices of the male cuckoos, mama to me, anaṅgapradīpanā kindling my passion, svananti making sounds.

These trees seem to enkindle my passion through all sorts of sounds like the loud cackle of swamp-hens and the sweet warble of the male cuckoos.
aśōkastabakāṅgāraṣṣaṭpadasvananiḥsvanaḥ.

māṅ hi pallavatāmrārcirvasantāgniḥ pradhakṣyati৷৷4.1.29৷৷


aśōkastabakāṅgāraḥ cluster of Asoka flowers are charcoals, ṣaṭpadasvananiḥsvanaḥ sounds of humming bees, pallavatāmrārciḥ copper-coloured tender leaves are flames, vasantāgniḥ fire of spring, mām to me, pradhakṣyati hi it is consuming indeed

'The fire of spring with clusters of Asoka flowers as its charcoal, its copper-coloured tender leaves as flames, the buzz of bees as its crackle will, as if, consume me.
na hi tāṅ sūkṣmapakṣmākṣīṅ sukēśīṅ mṛdubhāṣiṇīm.

apaśyatō mē saumitrē! jīvitē.sti prayōjanam৷৷4.1.30৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, sūkṣmapakṣmākṣīm a lady with delicate eyelashes, sukēśīm a lady with beautiful hair, mṛdubhāṣiṇīm sweet-tongued, tām she, apaśyataḥ not seeing her, mē my, jīvitē in life, prayōjanam asti is there any meaning?

'O Saumitri! my life is meaningless if I cannot see my beloved Sita with her delicate eye-lashes, beautiful locks of hair and her sweet voice.
ayaṅ hi dayitastasyāḥ kālō rucirakānanaḥ.

kōkilākulasīmāntō dayitāyā mamānagha৷৷4.1.31৷৷


anagha O Sinless one, mama to me, dayitāyāḥ to my beloved wife, tasyāḥ of her, rucirakānanaḥ beautiful forest, kōkilākulasīmāntaḥ cockoos crowding the skirts, ayam this, kālaḥ (Spring) time, dayitaḥ dear

'O sinless one, the spring season is dear to my beloved Sita when the outskirts of the forest are filled with voices of the cockoo.
manmathā.yāsasambhūtō vasantaguṇavardhitaḥ.

ayaṅ māṅ dhakṣyati kṣipraṅ śōkāgnirnacirādiva৷৷4.1.32৷৷


manmathā.yāsasambhūtaḥ rising from the tormenting love, ayam this, śōkāgniḥ fire of grief, vasantaguṇavardhitaḥ enhanced by effects of spring, mām me, kṣipram surely, nacirādiva very soon, dhakṣyati it will consume me

'The fire of grief ignited by Kandarpa (the god of love), enhanced by the effects of spring will certainly consume me soon.
apaśyatastāṅ dayitāṅ paśyatō ruciradrumān.

mamāyamātmaprabhavō bhūyastvamupayāsyati৷৷4.1.33৷৷


tāṅ dayitām beloved wife, apaśyataḥ unable to see, ruciradrumān delighting trees, paśyataḥ seeing, mama to me, ayam this, ātmaprabhavaḥ resplendent in me, bhūyastvam growth, upayāsyati will gain

'Unable to see my beloved wife, the very sight of these lovely trees intensifies my love for her who shines resplendent in me.
adṛśyamānā vaidēhī śōkaṅ vardhayatē mama.

dṛśyamānō vasantaśca svēdasaṅsargadūṣakaḥ৷৷4.1.34৷৷


adṛśyamānā not seen by me, vaidēhī Vaidehi, mama my, śōkam grief, vardhayati will intensify, svēdasaṅsargadūṣakaḥ takes away the sweat generated by physical union, dṛśyamānaḥ seeing, vasantaśca of spring season.

'When in place of Vaidehi I see spring (with its cool breeze) that used to take away the sweat generated by sensual enjoyment, my sorrow is intensified.
māṅ hyadya mṛgaśābākṣī cintāśōkabalātkṛtam.

santāpayati saumitrē! krūraścaitravanānilaḥ৷৷4.1.35৷৷


saumitrē Saumitri, mṛgaśābākṣī a fawn-eyed lady, cintāśōkabalātkṛtam sinking in sorrow, mām me, krūraḥ cruel, caitravanānilaḥ the breeze of spring forest, adya now, santāpayati torments, hi indeed

'O Saumitri! the cruel breeze of the spring forest torments me as I am now immersed in grief in the absence of my fawn-eyed beloved.
amī mayūrāśśōbhantē pranṛtyantastatastataḥ.

svaiḥ pakṣaiḥ pavanōddhūtairgavākṣaiḥ sphāṭikairiva৷৷4.1.36৷৷


tatastataḥ here and there, pranṛtyantaḥ dancing, amī these, mayūrāḥ peacocks, pavanōddhūtaiḥ shaken by the wind, sphāṭikaiḥ crystals, gavākṣairiva like windows, svaiḥ by their own, pakṣaiḥ with feathers, śōbhantē are delighting

'Delightful are the peacocks dancing here and there, their feathers looking like crystal windows flung open by the wind.
śikhinībhiḥ parivṛtāstē ētē madamūrchitāḥ.

manmathābhiparītasya mama manmathavardhanāḥ৷৷4.1.37৷৷


śikhinībhiḥ by peahens also, parivṛtāḥ surrounded, madamūrchitāḥ intoxicated with passion, tē ētē these peacocks, manmathābhiparītasya fallen in love, mama to me, manmathavardhanāḥ intensifying love

'The peacocks intoxicated with passion for the peahens surround them intensifying my longing (for Vaidehi).
paśya lakṣmaṇa! nṛtyantaṅ mayūramupanṛtyati.

śikhinī manmathārtaiṣā bhartāraṅ girisānuni৷৷4.1.38৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, girisānuni on the mountain slope, manmathārtā love lorn, ēṣā these, śikhinī peahen, nṛtyantam to dancing, bhartāram to the partner, mayūram peacock, upanṛtyati is dancing along with, paśya look

'Look at the lovelorn peahen, excited by love, dancing on the moutain slope, O Lakshmana! Engrossed in love, she dances for wooing the peacock.
tāmēva manmathāviṣṭō mayūrō.pyupadhāvati.

vitatya rucirau pakṣau rutairupahasanniva৷৷4.1.39৷৷


mayūrō.pi peacock also, rucirau enchanting, pakṣau two wings, vitatya after spreading, rutaiḥ with sounds, upahasanniva as if laughing at, tām ēva her only, upadhāvati is running after, manmathāviṣṭōḥ overwhelmed with love

'Overwhelmed with love, the enchanted peacock, spreading his wings is running after her, making sounds, as though mocking her.
mayūrasya vanē nūnaṅ rakṣasā na hṛtā priyā.

tasmānnṛtyati ramyēṣu vanēṣu saha kāntayā৷৷4.1.40৷৷


mayūrasya peacock's, priyā beloved, vanē in the forest, rakṣasā by the demon, na hṛtā not abducted, nūnam surely, tasmāt therefore, kāntayā saha along with its beloved, ramyēṣu in delight, vanēṣu in the forests, nṛtyati is dancing

'The peacock's beloved, for sure, has not been abducted by the demon. Therefore, he is dancing in delight in the forest in the company of his beloved.
mama tvayaṅ vinā vāsaḥ puṣpamāsē sudussahaḥ.

paśya lakṣmaṇa! saṅrāgaḥ tiryagyōnigatēṣvapi.

yadēṣā śikhinī kāmādbhartāraṅ ramatē.ntikē৷৷4.1.41৷৷


puṣpamāsē in the season of flowers, vanē in the forest, ayam this, vāsaḥ reside, mama tu to me, sudussahaḥ extremely unbearable, lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, paśya see, tiryagyōnigatēṣvapi even among the beasts birds saṅrāgaḥ out of deep love, yat ēṣā such a one, śikhinī peahen, kāmāt out of love, bhartāram her male partner, ramatē sports, antikē nearby

'It is extremely unbearable for me to stay in the forest during this season of flowers (Spring). Look at the passion even among beasts and birds, O Lakshmana! And craving for love, the peahen sports near her mate.
māmapyēvaṅ viśālākṣī jānakī jātasambhramā.

madanēnābhivartēta yadi nā.pahṛtā bhavēt৷৷4.1.42৷৷


viśālākṣī large-eyed lady, jānakī Janaki, apahṛtā stolen, na bhavēt yadi if it were not so, madanēna with love, jātasambhramā an excited woman, ēvam in this way, māmapi me too, abhivartēta would have remained closer to me

'Had the large-eyed Janaki not been stolen, she would have also paid advances to me in this manner with all her love and excitement.
paśya lakṣmaṇa! puṣpāṇi niṣphalāni bhavanti mē.

puṣpabhārasamṛddhānāṅ vanānāṅ śiśirātyayē৷৷4.1.43৷৷


lakṣmaṇa! Lakshmana, paśya look, śiśirātyayē at the end of winter, puṣpabhārasamṛddhānām loaded with flowers, vanānām of the forest, puṣpāṇi flowers, mē my, niṣphalāni bhavanti are no use

rucirāṇyapi puṣpāṇi pādapānāmatiśriyā.

niṣphalāni mahīṅ yānti samaṅ madhukarōtkaraiḥ৷৷4.1.44৷৷

'The trees look enchanting with flowers in full bloom, with bees hovering over them. But the flowers fruitlessly drop down on the ground.
nadanti kāmaṅ śakunā muditāssaṅghaśaḥ kalam.

āhvayanta ivānyōnyaṅ kāmōnmādakarā mama৷৷4.1.45৷৷


muditāḥ happy, śakunāḥ bird, mama to me, kāmōnmādakarāḥ mad with love, anyōnyam each other, āhvayantaḥ iva as though inviting, saṅghaśaḥ in groups, kalam in a sweet Voice, kāmam indeed, nadanti they call out

vasantō yadi tatrāpi yatra mē vasati priyā.

nūnaṅ paravaśā sītā sāpi śōcatyahaṅ yathā৷৷4.1.46৷৷


mē priyā my beloved, sītā Sita, yatra whereever, vasati stays, tatrāpi also there, vasantaḥ yadi if spring, sā api she also, paravaśā overwhelmed, ahaṅ yathā like me, śōcati is thinks, nūnam surely

'If spring reigns wherever my beloved Sita is, she must have been overwhelmed with similar sad feelings like me.
nūnaṅ na tu vasantō.taṅ dēśaṅ spṛśati yatra sā.

kathaṅ hyasitapadmākṣī vartayētsā mayā vinā৷৷4.1.47৷৷


sā she, yatra wherever, tam dēśam in the country, vasantaḥ Spring, na spṛśati touches not, nūnam surely, ayaṅ asitapadmākṣī lady with eyes like blue lotus, sā Sita, mayā vinā without me, katham how, vartayēt will she live ?

'Spring must not have touched the place where she is now staying. Otherwise how could my Sita with eyes like blue lotus live without me?
athavā vartatē tatra vasantō yatra mē priyā.

kiṅ kariṣyati suśrōṇī sā tu nirbhartsitā paraiḥ৷৷4.1.48৷৷


athavā or else, mē my, priyā beloved, yatra wherever, vartatē is staying, tatra there, vasantaḥ spring, vartatē is present, paraiḥ by the enemies, nirbhartsitā threatened, sā she, suśrōṇī a lady with beautiful hips, kiṅ kariṣyati what can she do?

'Or, if there is spring where my beloved lives, what can that lady of beautiful hips do, threatened by enemies.
śyāmā padmapalāśākṣī mṛdupūrvābhibhāṣiṇī.

nūnaṅ vasantamāsādya parityakṣyati jīvitam৷৷4.1.49৷৷


śyāmā a lady in youth, padmapalāśākṣī with eyes like lotus petals, mṛdu gentle, pūrvābhibhāṣiṇī eager to talk, vasantam spring, āsādya experiencing, nūnam certainly, jīvitam life, parityakṣyati will give up

'Eager to speak with her gentle voice, my young beloved, blessed with eyes like lotus petals, will certainly give up her life, unable to enjoy the spring.
dṛḍhaṅ hi hṛdayē buddhirmama samparivartatē.

nālaṅ vartayituṅ sītā sādhvī madvirahaṅ gatā৷৷4.1.50৷৷


hṛdayē in the heart, mama to me, buddhiḥ intellect, dṛḍham resolved, samparivartatē exist, madviraham seperated from me, gatā with, sādhvī chaste lady, sītā Sita, vartayitum to sustain, nālam no strength

'My mind makes me feel certain that Sita with her chastity might not be able to live
separated from me.
mayi bhāvastu vaidēhyāstattvatō vinivēśitaḥ.

mamāpi bhāvassītāyāṅ sarvathā vinivēśitaḥ৷৷4.1.51৷৷


vaidēhyāḥ Sita's, bhāvaḥ love, mayi in me, tattvataḥ truly, vinivēśitaḥ is fixed, mama my, bhāvaḥ api love also, sarvathā by all means, sītāyām in Sita, vinivēśitaḥ is fixed

'Sita has her love truly fixed in me. My love for her is equally steadfast.
ēṣa puṣpavahō vāyussukhasparśō himāvahaḥ.

tāṅ vicintayataḥ kāntāṅ pāvakapratimō mama৷৷4.1.52৷৷


puṣpavahaḥ one which carries flowers, sukhasparśaḥ with gentle touch, himāvahaḥ one which is cool, ēṣaḥ this one, vāyuḥ wind, tāṅ kāntām that beautiful Sita, vicintayataḥ while thinking, mama to me, pāvakapratimaḥ appears like fire

'This cool breeze that carries the fragrance of flowers, that is gentle in its touch feels like fire when I think about my beautiful beloved.
sadā sukhamahaṅ manyē yaṅ purā saha sītayā.

mārutassa vinā sītāṅ śōkaṅ vardhayatē mama৷৷4.1.53৷৷

stabakaiḥ pavanōtkṣiptaistarjayanniva māṅ sthitaḥ৷৷4.1.58৷৷


kāminām of the lovers, atyantam very much, śōkavardhanaḥ increases sorrow, ayam aśōkaḥ this asoka, pavanōtkṣiptaiḥ scattered by wind, stabakaiḥ clusters, mām me, tarjayanniva as if intimidating, sthitaḥ is making its presence felt

vibhramōtsiktamanasaḥ sāṅgarāgā narā iva৷৷4.1.59৷৷


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, kusumaśālinaḥ filled with flowers, amī these, cūtāḥ Mango trees, vibhramōtsiktamanasaḥ men with excited mind, sāṅgarāgāḥ men who applied fragrant unguents, narā iva like human beings, dṛśyantē appear

'O Lakshmana! these mango-trees full of blossoms appear like sexited men who have applied fragrant unguents to their bodies.
saumitrē! paśya pampāyāścitrāsu vanarājiṣu.

kinnarā naraśārdūla! vicaranti tatastataḥ৷৷4.1.60৷৷


naraśārdūla O tiger among brave man, saumitrē O Saumitri, pampāyāḥ of Pampa, citrāsu in the variegated, vanarājiṣu forests, kinnarāḥ kinnaras, tatastataḥ here and there, vicaranti are

'O Saumitri! O' tiger among men! look at the kinnaras wandering here and there, in the wonderful forest around the Pampa lake.
imāni śubhagandhīni paśya lakṣmaṇa! sarvaśaḥ.

nalināni prakāśantē jalē taruṇasūryavat৷৷4.1.61৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, śubhagandhīni of fine fragrance, imāni these, nalināni lotuses, jalē sarvaśaḥ all over the water, taruṇasūryavat like the rising Sun, prakāśantē are glowing, paśya see

haṅsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā pampā saugandhikānvitā৷৷4.1.62৷৷


prasannasalilā clear water, padmanīlōtpalāyutā endowed with red and blue lotuses, haṅsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā filled with swans and geese, saugandhikānvitā fragrant, ēṣā this, pampā Pampa

'This Pampa with its water clear and fragrant with red and blue lotuses is filled with swans and geese.
jalē taruṇasūryābhaiṣṣaṭpadāhatakēsaraiḥ.

paṅkajaiśśōbhatē pampā samantādabhisaṅvṛtā৷৷4.1.63৷৷


taruṇasūryābhaiḥ like the glow of early morning Sun, kēsaraiḥ filaments, paṅkajaiḥ with lotuses, samantāt all over, abhisaṅvṛtā fully coverred, jalē in water, pampā Pampa, śōbhatē delighting, ṣaṭpadāhatakēsaraiḥ with bees positioned on the filaments.

'Lake Pampa shines with lotuses with bees on their filaments like the rising sun.

mātaṅgamṛgayūthaiśca śōbhatē salilārthibhiḥ৷৷4.1.64৷৷


nityam always, cakravākayutā full of Chakravaka birds, citraprasthavanāntarā with wonderful forest-land, salilārthibhiḥ those wishing to have water, mātaṅgamṛgayūthaiśca by herds of elephants and deer, śōbhatē looks very beautiful

paṅkajāni virājantē tāḍyamānāni lakṣmaṇa!৷৷4.1.65৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, vimalē ambhasi in clear water, pavanāhatavēgābhiḥ struck by the force of the wind, ūrmibhiḥ by waves, tāḍyamānāni propelled, paṅkajāni lotuses, virājantē splendid.

'O Lakshmana! look at the lotuses in clear water dashing against one another due to waves caused by the force of the wind.
padmapatraviśālākṣīṅ satataṅ paṅkajapriyām.

apaśyatō mē vaidēhīṅ jīvitaṅ nābhirōcatē৷৷4.1.66৷৷


padmapatraviśālākṣīm lady with eyes large like lotus petals, satatam always, paṅkajapriyām a lover of lotuses, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, apaśyataḥ not being able to see, mē my, jīvitam life, nābhirōcatē not desire .

'Unable to see my beloved with eyes large like totus petals and an ardent lover of lotuses, I have no desire to live.
ahō kāmasya vāmatvaṅ yō gatāmapi durlabhām.

smārayiṣyati kalyāṇīṅ kalyāṇataravādinīm৷৷4.1.67৷৷

padmakēsarasaṅsṛṣṭaḥ touching the filaments of lotuses, vṛkṣāntaraviniḥsṛtaḥ blowing through the trees, manōharaḥ pleasant, sītāyāḥ Sita's, niḥśvāsaḥ iva like the breath, vāyuḥ wind, vāti blows.

saumitrē! O Saumitri, pampāyā Pampa's, dakṣiṇē south-ward, girisānuni on the slope of the mountains, karṇikārasya Karnikara's, puṣpitām blossomed, paramaśōbhanām very enchanting, yaṣṭim stem, paśya see.

'Look at the very spectacular karnikara tree with its blossmed branches on the mountain slope towards the southern side of Pampa, O Saumitri!
adhikaṅ śailarājō.yaṅ dhātubhiḥ suvibhūṣitaḥ.

vicitraṅ sṛjatē rēṇuṅ vāyuvēgavighaṭṭitam৷৷4.1.73৷৷


dhātubhiḥ with minerals, suvibhūṣitaḥ well-decked, ayam this, śailarājaḥ king of mountains, vāyuvēgavighaṭṭitam splattered by the speed of the wind, vicitram colourful, rēṇum dust particles, adhikam plenty, sṛjatē generates.

'This king of mountains is rich with plenty of minerals and, therefore, generates
multicoloured dust particles splattered by the speed of the wind.
giriprasthāstu saumitrē! sarvatassamprapuṣpitaiḥ.

niṣpatraissarvatō ramyaiḥ pradīptā iva kiṅśukaiḥ৷৷4.1.74৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri! giriprasthāḥ mountain ranges, sarvataḥ all over, samprapuṣpitaiḥ with well-bloomed, niṣpatraiḥ with leafless, ramyaiḥ by the enchanting ones, kiṅśukaiḥ with kimsuka flowers, sarvataḥ all over, pradīptāḥ are as if illuminated.

'O Saumitri! With leafless kimsuka trees in full bloom all over the mountain ranges they appear beautiful like blazing mountains.
pampātīraruhāścēmē saṅsaktā madhugandhinaḥ.

mālatīmallikāṣaṇḍāḥ karavīrāśca puṣpitāḥ৷৷4.1.75৷৷


pampātīraruhāḥ grown on the banks of Pampa, saṅsaktāḥ all close to each other, madhugandhinaḥ having sweet fragrance, imē these, mālatīmallikāṣaṇḍā: karavīrāśca clusters of malati, Mallika and karaviras, puṣpitāḥ in full bloom.

'Very closely grown on the banks of Pampa, stand malati, mallika and karavira trees with their clusters of fragrant blossoms.
kētakyassinduvārāśca vāsantyaśca supuṣpitāḥ.

mādhavyō gandhapūrṇāśca kundagulmāśca sarvaśaḥ৷৷4.1.76৷৷


kētakyaḥ ketakas sinduvārāśca sinduvara, vāsantyaśca veneral flowers, gandhapūrṇāḥ filled with fragrance, mādhavyaḥ madhavi, kundagulmāśca kunda bushes, sarvaśaḥ everywhere, supuṣpitāḥ are in full bloom.

'Fully blossmed ketaka, sinduvara, madhavi and kunda bushes in spring scatter their fragrance everywhere.
ciribilvā madhūkāśca vañjulā vakulāstathā.

campakāstilakāścaiva nāgavṛkṣāssupuṣpitāḥ৷৷4.1.77৷৷

nīpāśca varaṇāścaiva kharjūrāśca supuṣpitā.


ciribilvāḥ chiribilvas, madhūkāśca madhukas, vañjulāḥ vanjulas, tathā so also, vakulāḥ bakulas, campakāḥ champaka, tilakāścaiva even tilaka, nāgavṛkṣāśca nanga trees also, puṣpitāḥ in bloom, nīpāśca kadamba, varaṇāścaiva even varanas, kharjūrāśca and kharjuras also, supuṣpitāḥ are in full bloom.

'Chiribilva, madhuka, vanjula, bakula, champaka, tilaka and naga varana and kharjura trees are in full bloom.
padmakāścaiva śōbhantē nīlāśōkāśca puṣpitāḥ.

lōdhrāśca giripṛṣṭhēṣu siṅhakēsarapiñjarāḥ৷৷4.1.78৷৷


giripṛṣṭhēṣu on the back of the mountains, puṣpitāḥ bloomed, padmakāścaiva even lotuses, nīlāśōkāśca blue asokas, siṅhakēsarapiñjarāḥ of golden colour like the lion's mane, lōdhrāśca and lodhra, śōbhantē splendid.

latāssamanuvartantē mattā iva varastriyaḥ৷৷4.1.84৷৷


vātavikṣiptaviṭapān the branches of trees are swayed by the wind, yathāsannān drawn close, imān drumān these trees, latāḥ creepers, mattāḥ drunken state, varastriyaḥ yathā like lovely
women, samanuvartantē follow.

'While the branches of trees swayed by the wind draw close, the creepers follow the trees like lovely women in a drunken state.
pādapātpādapaṅ gacchan śailācchailaṅ vanādvanam.

vāti naikarasāsvādassammōdita ivānilaḥ৷৷4.1.85৷৷


anilaḥ wind, naikarasāsvādasammōdita iva if contended by relishing all the flavour, pādapāt from one tree, pādapam to another tree, śailāt from mountain, śailam to another mountain, vanāt from one forest, vanam to another, gacchan while moving, vāti blows.

'The wind blows from tree to tree, mountain to mountain, and forest to forest as though content to enjoy all the fragrance.
kēcitparyāptakusumāḥ pādapā madhugandhinaḥ.

kēcinmukulasaṅvītāḥ śyāmavarṇā ivābabhuḥ৷৷4.1.86৷৷


madhugandhinaḥ of sweet fragrance, kēcit some, pādapāḥ trees, paryāptakusumāḥ with propuse flowers, mukulasaṅvītāḥ put forth buds, kēcit some, śyāmavarṇā iva as if blue in colour, ābabhu: shone.

'Some trees stood fragrant with profuse flowers and some with buds shining blue.
idaṅ mṛṣṭamidaṅ svādu praphullamidamityapi.

rāgayuktō madhukaraḥ kusumēṣvēva līyatē৷৷4.1.87৷৷


rāgayuktaḥ fascinated (attracted by sweet fragrance), madhukaraḥ a bee, idam this, mṛṣṭam feels soft, idam this, svādu sweet, idam this, praphullam is fully-blossomed, ityapi in this way, kusumēṣvēva among flowers only, līyatē clasping

'Fascinated by the flowers, the honeybees cling to one or the other, humming, 'this is soft, this is sweet, and this is fully-blossomed.'

madhulubdhō madhukaraḥ pampātīradrumēṣvasau৷৷4.1.88৷৷


pampātīradrumēṣu among the trees on the bank of Pampa, madhulubdhaḥ greedy of honey, asau this, madhukaraḥ honey-bee, nilīya after resting for a while, punaḥ again, utpatya flying, sahasā at once, anyatra other place, gacchati going.

'The bees greedy for honey move among the trees on the banks of Pampa. Resting for a while, at one place they fly soon to another.
iyaṅ kusumasaṅghātairupastīrṇā sukhākṛtā.

svayaṅ nipatitairbhūmiśśayanaprastarairiva৷৷4.1.89৷৷


svayam on its own, nipatitaiḥ fallen down, kusumasaṅghātaiḥ bunches of flowers, śayanaprastarairiva like a bed-stone, upastīrṇā scattered, iyam this, bhūmiḥ ground, sukhākṛtā rendered comfortable.

'With countless flowers fallen on their own from trees and scattered like a bed of flowers on stone the ground is rendered comfortable enough to relax on.
vividhā vividhaiḥ puṣpaistairēva nagasānuṣu.

vikīrṇai pītaraktāhi saumitrē prastarāḥ kṛtāḥ৷৷4.1.90৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, nagasānuṣu on the slopes of mountains, vividhaiḥ with many, (taiḥ) puṣpairēva flowers alone, vikīrṇāḥ spread, vividhāḥ several, prastarāḥ slabs, pītaraktā hi yellow and red, kṛtāḥ formed

'O Saumitri! varieties of colourful flowers, some red and some yellow, are spread out on the mountain slopes.
himāntē paśya saumitrē! vṛkṣāṇāṅ puṣpasambhavam.

puṣpamāsē hi taravassaṅgharṣādiva puṣpitāḥ৷৷4.1.91৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, himāntē at the end of winter, puṣpamāsē in Spring, vṛkṣāṇām of the trees, puṣpasambhavam abundance of flowers, paśya see, taravaḥ trees, saṅgharṣādiva competing with each other, puṣpitāḥ have blossomed .

'Winter has ended and the season of flowers has set in, O Saumitri! The trees are full of flowers as if competing with one another.
āhvayanta ivānyōnyaṅ nagāṣṣaṭpadanāditāḥ.

kusumōttaṅsaviṭapāśśōbhantē bahu lakṣmaṇa৷৷4.1.92৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, kusumōttaṅsaviṭapāḥ trees crowned with flowers, ṣaṭpadanāditāḥ filled with humming of honey-bees, nagāḥ trees, anyōnyam one another, āhvayantaḥ iva as if they are calling, bahu many, śōbhantē shine.

'The trees, crowned with flowers filled with humming bees, look splendid. It appears they are calling one another, O Lakshmana !
ēṣa kāraṇḍavaḥ pakṣī vigāhya salilaṅ śubham.

ramatē kāntayā sārdhaṅ kāmamuddīpayanmama৷৷4.1.93৷৷


ēṣaḥ this, kāraṇḍavaḥ pakṣī karandava bird, śubham auspicious, salilam waters, vigāhya after bathing, kāmam love, uddīpayanmama provoking, kāntayā sārdham along with the beloved, ramatē sporting.

'This duck, entering into auspicious water, sports with its beloved and incites my love.
mandākinyāstu yadidaṅ rūpamēvaṅ manōharam.

sthānē jagati vikhyātā guṇāstasyā manōramāḥ৷৷4.1.94৷৷


ēvam this way, manōharam captivating, yat such, idam this, rūpam form, mandākinyāḥ of Mandakini, tasyāḥ its, manōramāḥ beautiful, guṇāḥ virtues, jagati in the world, vikhyātāḥ famous, sthānē position.

'Only Ganga, like Pampa, has such captivating charm. Its beauty and virtues are famous in the world.
yadi dṛśyēta sā sādhvī yadi cēha vasēmahi.

spṛhayēyaṅ na śakrāya nāyōdhyāyai raghūttama৷৷4.1.95৷৷


raghūttama O the best among the Raghu race, sādhvī chaste lady, dṛśyēta yadi if found, iha here, vasēmahi yadi we stay here only, śakrāya for Indra's, na spṛhayēyam I do not desire the position, ayōdhyāyai for Ayodhya, na not.

'O Lakshmna, the best of the Raghu race, if only that chaste Sita appears, we will stay here. I will not wish for the position of Indra or for Ayodhya.
nahyēvaṅ ramaṇīyēṣu śādvalēṣu tayā saha.

ramatō mē bhavēccintā na spṛhā.nyēṣu vā bhavēt৷৷4.1.96৷৷


hi indeed, ēvam that way, ramaṇīyēṣu in the enchanting, śādvalēṣu green grassy land, tayā saha along with her, ramataḥ sporting, mē to myself, cintā worry, na bhavēt not worry, anyēṣu spṛhā vā or desire for any other pleasure, na bhavēt will not.

'If I can sport with Sita in this beautiful green grassy land, I will not have any worry, I would not desire for any other pleasure.
amī hi vividhaiḥ puṣpaistaravō ruciracchadāḥ.

kānanē৷৷sminvinā kāntāṅ cintāmutpādayanti mē৷৷4.1.97৷৷


ruciracchadāḥ with beautiful leaves, amī these, taravaḥ trees, vividhaiḥ with many kinds of, puṣpaiḥ with flowers, asmin in this, kānanē in the forest, kāntāṅ vinā separated from wife, mē to me,
cintām worry, utpādayanti bringing about.

'These trees with their beautiful leaves and varieties of flowers bring me agony as I live in this forest separated from my beloved.
paśya śītajalāṅ cēmāṅ saumitrē! puṣkarāyutām.

cakravākānucaritāṅ kāraṇḍava niṣēvitām৷৷4.1.98৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, śītajalām with cool water, puṣkarāyutām filled with lotuses, cakravākānucaritām with chakravakas flying about, kāraṇḍavaniṣēvitām frequented by ducks, imām this, paśya see.

'O Saumitri! look at this lake of cool water filled with, lotuses, chakravakas flying about and ducks floating.
plavaiḥ krauñcaiśca sampūrṇāṅ mahāmṛganiṣēvitām.

adhikaṅ śōbhatē pampā vikūjadbhiḥrvihaṅgamaiḥ৷৷4.1.99৷৷

dīpayantīva mē kāmaṅ vividhā muditā dvijāḥ.

śyāmāṅ candramukhīṅ smṛtvā priyāṅ padmanibhēkṣaṇām৷৷4.1.100৷৷


plavaiḥ swemming, krauñcaiśca krauncha, sampūrṇāṅ filled, mahāmṛganiṣēvitām inhabited by big animals, pampā Pampa, vikūjadbhiḥ vihaṅgamaiḥ by warbling birds, adhikaṅ very much, śōbhatē looks beautiful, muditāḥ joyous, vividhāḥ several, dvijāḥ birds, śyāmām young lady, candramukhīm Moon-faced, padmanibhēkṣaṇām with eyes like lotus, priyām beloved, smṛtvā remembering, mē to me, kāmam passion, dīpayantīva burning.

Pampa, filled with swimming, kraunchas and frequented by big animals looks splendid. The joyous warbling of a variety of birds is highly exciting. They kindle my passion for my young, Moon-faced, lotus eyed beloved.
paśya sānuṣu citrēṣu mṛgībhissahitānmṛgān.

māṅ punarmṛgaśābākṣyā vaidēhyā virahīkṛtam৷৷4.1.101৷৷

vyathayantīva mē cittaṅ sañcarantastatastataḥ.


citrēṣu colourful, sānuṣu slopes of mountains, mṛgībhiḥ with female deer, sahitān accompanied, mṛgān deer, paśya see, tatastataḥ here and there, sañcarantaḥ while moving about, mṛgaśābākṣyā fawn-eyed, vaidēhyā of Vaidehi, virahīkṛtam separated from, mām me, punaḥ again, vyathayantīva agonised, mē my, cittam heart.

Look at the (male) deer happily roaming here and there together with the female deer on the colourful mountain slopes. Separated from the fawn-eyed Vaidehi, this sight fills my heart with agony.
asminsānuni ramyē hi mattadvijagaṇāyutē.

paśyēyaṅ yadi tāṅ kāntāṅ tatassvasti bhavēnmama৷৷4.1.102৷৷


ramyē in a beautiful spot, mattadvijagaṇāyutē a place filled with flocks of intoxicated flocks of birds, asmin in this, sānuni slope, tām her, kāntām beloved wife, paśyēyaṅ yadi if I see, mama to me, svasti auspicious, bhavēt will be.

'If I find my dear beloved here on these mountain slopes full of passionate birds how happy will I not feel!
jīvēyaṅ khalu saumitrē! mayā saha sumadhyamā.

sēvatē yadi vaidēhī pampāyāḥ pavanaṅ sukham৷৷4.1.103৷৷


saumitrē! O Saumitri, sumadhyamā a lady of slender waist, vaidēhī Vaidehi, saha along with, pampāyāḥ at Pampa, sukham happy, pavanam breeze, sēvatē yadi if only he enjoys, jīvēyaṅ khalu I can be alive.

'O Saumitri! I can be alive and happy if Sita of slender waist enjoys here with me the sweet breeze of Pampa.
padmasaugandhikavahaṅ śivaṅ śōkavināśanam.

dhanyā lakṣmaṇa! sēvantē pampōpavanamārutam৷৷4.1.104৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, padmasaugandhikavaham carrying the fragrance of lotuses, śivam auspicious, śōkavināśanam destroyer of sorrow, pampōpa surrounding Pampa, mārutam the breeze in the forest, dhanyāḥ blessed ones, sēvantē will enjoy.

'O Lakshmana! blessed are those who enjoy the breeze filled with fragrance of lotuses of the surrounding forests of Pampa. The gentle and auspicious breeze indeed takes away the sorrow of the mind.
śyāmā padmapalāśākṣī priyā virahitā mayā.

kathaṅ dhārayati prāṇānvivaśā janakātmajā৷৷4.1.105৷৷


śyāmā young, padmapalāśākṣī with eyes like lotus petals, priyā loving, janakātmajā daughter of Janaka, mayā me, virahitā separated from, vivaśā dejected, prāṇān life, katham how, dhārayati will holds on.

'How can Janaka's daughter with eyes like lotus petals, so young and loving, sustain her life? Away from me, she must be feeling quite dejected.
kinnu vakṣyāmi rājānaṅ dharmajñaṅ satyavādinam.

sītāyā janakaṅ pṛṣṭaḥ kuśalaṅ janasaṅsadi৷৷4.1.106৷৷


janasaṅsadi in front of the assembly of people, pṛṣṭa: sītāyāḥ makes enquired of Sita, dharmajñam a righteous, satyavādinam follower of truth, rājānam king, janakam Janaka, kiṅ nu what, kuśalam welfare, vakṣyāmi am I to speak?

'If righteous and truthful Janaka enquires about Sita's wellbeing in the assembly of people, what am I to speak ?
yā māmanugatā mandaṅ pitrā pravrājitaṅ vanam.

sītā satpathamāsthāya kva nu sā vartatē priyā৷৷4.1.107৷৷


pitrā by father, vanam to the forest, pravrājitam banished, mandam unfortunate, mām me, yā she, satpatham a righteous path, āsthāya after taking, anugatā she followed me, sā she, priyā beloved, sītā Sita, kva where, vartatē nu is she now.

tayā vihīnaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ kathaṅ lakṣmaṇa! dhārayē.

yā māmanugatā rājyādbhraṣṭaṅ vigatacētasam৷৷4.1.108৷৷


lakṣmaṇa! Lakshmana, rājyāt from the kingdom, bhraṣṭam deposed, vigatacētasam mind of its gear, mām me, yā she, anugatā followed, tayā vihīnaḥ bereft of her, kṛpaṇaḥ helpless one, katham how, dhārayē I bear my life?

'She followed me, O Lakshmana! as I was deposed from the kingdom and distraught. Now helpless, how can I live without her?
taccārvañcitapadmākṣaṅ sugandhi śubhamavraṇam.

apaśyatō mukhaṅ tasyāssīdatīva manō mama৷৷4.1.109৷৷


tasyāḥ her, cāru beautiful, añcitapadmākṣam lady with lotus petal like eyes with beautiful lashes, sugandhi fragrance, śubham auspicious, avraṇam blemishless, tat that, mukham face, apaśyataḥ not seeing, mama to me, manaḥ in mind, sīdatīva very painful.

'Unable to see her beautiful, face with auspicious eyes like fragrant lotuses, I feel (so) depressed.
smitahāsyāntarayutaṅ guṇavanmadhuraṅ hitam.

vaidēhyā vākyamatulaṅ kadā śrōṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa!৷৷4.1.110৷৷


lakṣmaṇa! Lakshmana, vaidēhyāḥ (sitāyāḥ) Sita's, smitahāsyāntarayutam gentle smile, guṇavat virtuous, madhuram sweet, hitam wholesome, atulam incomparable, vākyam words, kadā when, śrōṣyāmi can I listen ?

'When can I listen to Sita's sweet, wholesome and virtuous, incomparable words interlaced with her gentle smile, O Lakshmana?
prāpya dukhaṅ vanē śyāmā māṅ manmathavikarśitam.

naṣṭaduḥkhēva hṛṣṭēva sādhvī sādhvabhyabhāṣata৷৷4.1.111৷৷


śyāmā young, sādhvī chaste lady, vanē in the forest, duḥkham sorrow, prāpya after going through, naṣṭa duḥkhēva as if not having sorrow, hṛṣṭēva as if rejoicing, manmathavikarśitam tormented with love, mām me , sādhu properly, abhyāṣata spoke.

My young and faithful beloved used to put up a brave face and speak to me in all propriety to cheer me up in the midst of suffering in the forest whenever I felt tormented by passion.
kiṅ nu vakṣyāmi kausalyāmayōdhyāyāṅ nṛpātmaja.

kva sā snuṣēti pṛcchantīṅ kathaṅ cāpi tu manasvinīm৷৷4.1.112৷৷


nṛpātmaja O prince! ayōdhyāyām at Ayodhya, sā that, snuṣā daughter-in-law, kva where, katham how, iti this way, pṛcchantīm as she inquires, manasvinīm highminded, kausalyām Kausalya, kiṅ nu what can I vakṣyāmi tell her.

'O Prince, what can I tell the highminded Kausalya at Ayodhya when she asks the whereabouts of her daughter-in-law'?
gaccha lakṣmaṇa! paśya tvaṅ bharataṅ bhrātṛvatsalam.

na hyahaṅ jīvitu śaktastāmṛtē janakātmajām৷৷4.1.113৷৷


lakṣmaṇa! O Lakshmana, tvam you, gaccha you may go, bhrātṛvatsalam loving brother, bharatam to Bharata, paśya you may see, aham I, tāṅ janakātmajām ṛtē without her, the daughter of Janaka, jīvitum to live, na śaktaḥ hi not possible for me.

'You may go to Ayodhya, O Lakshmana, to see our loving brother, Bharata. It is not possible for me to survive without the daughter of Janaka'.
iti rāmaṅ mahātmānaṅ vilapantamanāthavat.

uvāca lakṣmaṇō bhrātā vacanaṅ yuktamavyayam৷৷4.1.114৷৷


iti this manner, anāthavat orphan-like, vilapantam while wailing, mahātmānam a great soul, rāmam Rama, bhrātā brother, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, yuktam fitting, avyayam unforgettable, vacanam these words, abravīt said.

Thus spoke Lakshmana these befitting, unforgettable words to his his-souled brother, Rama wailing like an orphan:
saṅstambha rāma! bhadraṅ tē mā śucaḥ puruṣōttama!.

nēdṛśānāṅ matirmandā bhavatyakaluṣātmanām৷৷4.1.115৷৷


puruṣōttama! O foremost of men, rāma Rama, saṅstambha control yourself, tē to you, bhadram wish you well, mā śucaḥ do not grieve, īdṛśānām for people like you, akaluṣātmanām men who are pure at heart, mandā weak, matiḥ intellect, na bhavati not be.

'O Rama, the foremost of men, control yourself. Be blessed. People who are pure at heart do not feel depressed at heart.
smṛtvā viyōgajaṅ duḥkhaṅ tyaja snēhaṅ priyē janē.

atisnēhapariṣvaṅgādvartirārdrāpi dahyatē৷৷4.1.116৷৷


viyōgajam born of separation, duḥkham sorrow, smṛtvā by remembering, priyē in your loved one, janē people, snēham love, tyaja give up, atisnēhapariṣvaṅgāt saturated by oil, ārdrā wet,
vartirapi cotton wick, dahyatē will burns.

'Remembrance of loved ones causes sorrow. Even a wet cotton wick gets burnt by embracing excessive oil. Hence abandon grief.
yadi gacchati pātālaṅ tatō.bhyadhikamēva vā.

sarvathā rāvaṇastāvanna bhaviṣyati rāghava৷৷4.1.117৷৷


rāghava Rama, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, pātālam underworld, tataḥ thereafter, abhyadhikamēva vā or even to a lower region, gacchati yadi if he goes, sarvathā by all means, na bhaviṣyati tāvat he will not survive.

'Even if Ravana escapes into the nether world or into a world still lower, he cannot save himself by any means, O Rama !
pravṛttirlabhyatāṅ tāvattasya pāpasya rakṣasaḥ.

tatō hāsyati vā sītāṅ nidhanaṅ vā gamiṣyati৷৷4.1.118৷৷


pāpasya of the sinner, tasya rakṣasaḥ of that demon, pravṛtti: whereabouts, labhyatāṅ tāvat should be available, tataḥ then, sītāṅ vā either Sita, hāsyati he will give back, nidhanaṅ vā or death, gamiṣyati get into.

'Once the whereabouts of that sinful demon are known he will either deliver Sita or die.
yadi yātiditērgarbhaṅ rāvaṇassaha sītayā.

tatrāpyēnaṅ haniṣyāmi na cēddāsyati maithilīm৷৷4.1.119৷৷


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, sītayā saha with Sita, ditē: Diti's, garbham womb, yāti yadi enters even, maithilīm Sita, na dāsyati cēt does not return, tatrāpi there also, ēnam him, haniṣyāmi I will slay.

'Even if Ravana enters into the womb of Diti (mother of demons) along with Sita, I will
slay him there if he does not return the daughter of Mithila.
svāsthyaṅ bhadraṅ bhajasvārya tyajyatāṅ kṛpaṇā matiḥ.

arthō hi naṣṭakāryārthairnāyatnēnādhigamyatē৷৷4.1.120৷৷


ārya O Noble Prince, bhadram well-being, svāsthyam composure, bhajasva adopt, kṛpaṇā pitiable, matiḥ mind, tyajyatām give up, naṣṭakāryārthaiḥ for restoration of loss, arthaḥ result, ayatnēna by not making efforts, nādhigamyatē hi will not be achieved.

'O noble prince! be blessed. maintain composure. Without making any effort it is not possible to achieve the objective and recoup loss.
utsāhō balavānārya! nāstyutsāhātparaṅ balam.

sōtsāhasyāsti lōkē.smin na kiñcidapi durlabham৷৷4.1.121৷৷


ārya! O revered Sire, utsāhaḥ effort, balavān is strength, utsāhāt enterprise, param supreme, balam strength, nāsti is not there, sōtsāhasya for one who is enthused, lōkē.smin in the worlds, kiñcidapi nothing, durlabham to impossible.

'O revered Sire, enterprise is supreme strength. Nothing is difficult in this world for one who is up and doing.
utsāhavantaḥ puruṣā nāvasīdanti karmasu.

utsāhamātramāśritya sītāṅ pratilabhēmahi৷৷4.1.122৷৷


utsāhavantaḥ enterprising, puruṣāḥ men, karmasu in tasks, nāvasīdanti will not be disheartened, utsāhamātram enterprise alone, āśritya having taken recourse, pratilabhēmahi we will gain, sītām Sita.

'Enterprising men will never be disappointed in their mission. It is possible to get Sita through effort alone.
tyajyatāṅ kāmavṛttatvaṅ śōkaṅ sannyasya pṛṣṭhataḥ.

mahātmānaṅ kṛtātmānamātmānaṅ nāvabudhyasē৷৷4.1.123৷৷


śōkam grief, pṛṣṭhataḥ at your back, sannyasya after removing, kāmavṛttatvam impulsive thought, tyajyatām be given up, mahātmānam great soul, kṛtātmānam an accomplished person, ātmānam own self, nāvabudhyasē not aware.

'Bardon grief. Give up emotion. You are a great soul. You are not aware of your great accomplishments. (The temporary sorrow has relegated Rama's nobility to the background. Lakshmana is trying to restore the same)'.
ēvaṅ sambōdhitastatra śōkōpahatacētanaḥ.

tyajya śōkañca mōhañca tatō dhairyamupāgamat৷৷4.1.124৷৷


śōkōpahatacētanaḥ overwhelmed with grief, tataḥ later, ēvam in that way, sambōdhitaḥ having been addressed, śōkaṅ ca grief, mōhaṅ ca and delusion, tyajya setting aside, dhairyam patience, upāgamat gained back.

Thus persuaded by Lakshmana, Rama who was hitherto besieged by grief and delusion, could set them aside and regain patience.
sō.bhyatikrāmadavyagrastāmacintyaparākramaḥ.

rāmaḥ pampāṅ surucirāṅ ramyapāriplavadrumām৷৷4.1.125৷৷


acintyaparākramaḥ a hero of unimaginable valour, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, avyagraḥ an undisturbed person, surucirām very delightful, ramyām pāriplavadrumām having beautiful plants floating on its surface, pampām Pampa, abhyatikrāmat went beyond.

No more disturbed by delusion, Rama of unimaginable valour, crossed the very brilliant Pampa with beautiful plants floating on its surface.
nirīkṣamāṇassahasā mahātmā sarvaṅ vanaṅ nirjharakandarāśca.

udvignacētāssaha lakṣmaṇēna vicārya duḥkhōpahataḥ pratasthē৷৷4.1.126৷৷


mahātmā great soul, sarvam all, vanam forest, nirjharakandarāḥ with streams and caves, nirīkṣamāṇaḥ observing, udvignacētāḥ dejected at heart, lakṣmaṇēna saha with Lakshmana, vicārya thinking over, duḥkhōpahataḥ inflicted with sorrow, sahasā quickly, pratasthē started.

The great Rama was overcome with grief while scanning the entire forest with its streams and caves. Engrossed in her thoughts, dejected at heart and inflicted with pain, he set both, accompanied by Lakshmana.
taṅ mattamātaṅgavilāsagāmī gacchantamavyagramanā mahātmā.

sa lakṣmaṇō rāghavamapramattō rarakṣa dharmēṇa balēna caiva৷৷4.1.127৷৷


mattamātaṅgavilāsagāmī who walks like a mighty intoxicated elephant, mahātmā great soul, saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, gacchantam as he went, rāghavam Rama, apramattō vigilant, avyagramanāḥ with steady mind dharmēṇa dutifully, balēna caiva by his strength, rarakṣa protected.

The great soul, Lakshmana, striding like a mighty elephant, with a steady mind, followed Rama dutifully, protecting him with his strength.
tāvṛṣyamūkasya samīpacārī carandadarśādbhutadarśanīyau.

śākhāmṛgāṇāmadhipastarasvī vitatrasē naiva cicēṣṭa kiñcit৷৷4.1.128৷৷


ṛṣyamūkasya of Rishyamuka, samīpacārī while wandering near, tarasvī swift, śākhāmṛgāṇām of monkeys, adhipaḥ king, caran while going, adbhutadarśanīyau of wonderful appearance, tau both, dadarśa he saw, na vitatrasē not scared, kiñcit a little, naiva cicēṣṭa did not gesticulate.

The swift-footed, mighty king of monkeys saw those two men of wonderful appearance as they were wandering at Rishyamuka. He neither got scared nor showed signs of nervousness.
sa tau mahātmā gajamandagāmī śākhāmṛgastatra carañcarantau.

dṛṣṭvā viṣādaṅ paramaṅ jagāma cintāparītō bhayabhāramagnaḥ৷৷4.1.129৷৷


tatra there, caran while moving, gajamandagāmī walking gracefully like an elephant, mahātmā great soul, saḥ that, śākhāmṛgaḥ monkeys, carantau those two men walking, tau both of them dṛṣṭvā after seeing, cintāparītaḥ got worried, bhayabhāramagnaḥ immersed in fear, paramam very, viṣādam sorrow, jagāma attained.

The great soul, Sugriva, walking slowly like an elephant saw both of them and became despondent, worried and immersed in fear.
tamāśramaṅ puṇyasukhaṅ śaraṇyaṅ sadaiva śākhāmṛgasēvitāntam.

trastāśca dṛṣṭvā harayō.bhijagmurmahaujasau rāghavalakṣmaṇau tau৷৷4.1.130৷৷


mahaujasau of great strength, tau both, rāghavalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, trastāḥ frightened, harayaḥ monkeys, puṇyasukham sacred and safe, śaraṇyam a refugees, sadaiva always, śākhāmṛgasēvitāntam a resting-place for monkeys, tam such, āśramam hermitage, abhijagmuḥ went.

Having seen the mighty Rama and Lakshmana, all other monkeys got frightened and ran into a sacred and safe hermitage.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē prathamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the first sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
