Sloka & Translation

[Sugriva blames himself for his action --- praises Vali for his virtues --- seeks Rama's permission to immolate himself --- Rama consoles --- Tara pleads with Rama to slay her.]

tāṅ cāśruvēgēna durāsadēna

tvabhiplutāṅ śōkamahārṇavēna.

paśyaṅstadā vālyanujastarasvī

bhrāturvadhēnāpratimēna tēpē4.24.1৷৷


durāsadēna by the unassailable, śōkamahārṇavēna by the ocean of grief, aśruvēgēna with the flood of tears, abhiplutām overwhelmed, tām her,paśyan perceiving, tadā then, tarasvī powerful, vālyanujaḥ younger brother of Vali (Sugriva), apratimēna incomparable, bhrātuḥ vadhēna over killing of the brother, tēpē agonized.

Sugriva, the unassailable younger brother of Vali, perceiving Tara overwhelmed in the ocean of grief felt agonized for the killing of his brother of incomparable power.
sa bāṣpapūrṇēna mukhēna vīkṣya

kṣaṇēna nirviṇṇamanā manasvī.

jagāma rāmasya śanaissamīpaṅ

bhṛtyairvṛtasamparidūyamānaḥ4.24.2৷৷


bāṣpapūrṇēna filled with tears, mukhēna face, kṣaṇēna for a moment, vīkṣya glanced, nirviṇṇamanāḥ depressed soul, manasvī highly sensitive, saḥ Sugriva, samparidūyamānaḥ pained, bhṛtyaiḥ by attendants, vṛtaḥ surounded, śanaiḥ slowly, rāmasya to Rama, samīpam presence, jagāma reached.

Face drenched with tears, highly sensitive Sugriva glanced at Tara for a moment.
Pained and depressed at heart, and surrounded by attendants, he slowly approached Rama.
sa taṅ samāsādya gṛhītacāpa-

mudāttamāśīviṣatulyabāṇam.

yaśasvinaṅ lakṣaṇalakṣitāṅga-

mavasthitaṅ rāghava mityuvāca4.24.3৷৷


saḥ he (Sugriva), gṛhītacāpam stood with the bow, udāttam magnanimous, āśīviṣatulyabāṇam with sepent-like arrow, yaśasvinam illustrious, lakṣaṇalakṣitāṅgam endowed with auspicious features, avasthitam him, who stood, taṅ rāghavam that Rama, samāsādya went near, iti thus, uvāca spoke.

Duly approaching the illustrious Rama, endowed with auspicious signs, who stood with his bow and serpent-like arrows, Sugriva thus submitted:
yathā pratijñātamidaṅ narēndra!

kṛtaṅ tvayā dṛṣṭaphalaṅ ca karma.

mamādya bhōgēṣu narēndraputra!

manō nivṛttaṅ sahajīvitēna4.24.4৷৷


narēndra! O king!, tvayā by you, yathā as, pratijñātam promised, idam this, dṛṣṭaphalam seen the result, karma deed, kṛtam done, narēndraputra son of a king, saha jīvitēna along with life, adya now, mama to me, manaḥ mind, bhōgēṣu in pleasures, nivṛttam not interested.

'Your majesty! you have struck down Vali as promised and the consequences of your action are seen now. O prince, however, my mind is not interested in the enjoyment of pleasures. I have no interest in life.
asyāṅ mahiṣyāṅ tu bhṛśaṅ rudantyā

purē ca vikrōśati duḥkhataptē.

hatē.grajē saṅśayitē.ṅgadē ca

na rāma! rājyē ramatē manō mē4.24.5৷৷


rāma Rama, asyām when she, mahiṣyām this queen, bhṛśam deeply, rudantyām is weeping, duḥkhataptē agonized, purē in the city, vikrōśati wailing, nṛpē the king, hatē killed, agrajē ca and my elder brother, saṅśayitē uncertain, aṅgadē Angada's life, mē to me, manaḥ mind, rājyē in the kingdom, na ramatē not interested.

'O Rama! when the queen (Tara) is weeping, plunged in deep sorrow, the entire city is lamenting in agony, my elder brother is dead and the survival of Angada is uncertain, my mind no longer longs for the enjoyment of the kingdom.
krōdhādamarṣādativipradharṣā-

dbhrāturvadhō mē.numataḥ purastāt.

hatē tvidānīṅ hariyūthapē.smin

sutīvramikṣvākukumāra! tapsyē৷৷4.24.6৷৷


purastāt earlier, krōdhāt owing to wrath, amarṣāt due to intolerance, ativipradharṣāt unable to tolerate harsh words, bhrātuḥ of brother's, vadhaḥ killing, mē to me, anumataḥ agreeable, ikṣvākuvara O prince of the Ikshvakus, idānīm now, asmin this, hariyūthapē leader of monkeys, hatē killed, sutīkṣṇam intensely, tapsyē I am pained.

'O prince of the Ikshvaku family, the anger due to my exilement and my intolerance of his harsh words, had made the killing of my brother agreeable to me earlier. Now that the leader of the monkey clan is killed I am intensely hurt.
śrēyō.dya manyē mama śailamukhyē

tasminnivāsaściramṛśyamūkē.

yathā tathā vartayatassvavṛttyā

nēmaṅ nihatya tridivasya lābhaḥ4.24.7৷৷


adya now, svavṛttyā natural manner, yathā tathā as usual, vartayataḥ maintaining, mama myself, tasmin on that, śailamukhyē great mountain, ṛśyamūkē on Rishyamuka, ciram for a long time, nivāsaḥ residence, śrēyaḥ is better, manyē I think, imam him, nihatya killing, tridivasya even heaven, lābhaḥ attainment, na not.

'I now feel dwelling long on the great mountain Rishyamuka as usual and somehow eking out a livelihood is preferable to attaining heaven as a sequel to the death of my brother.
na tvāṅ jighāṅsāmi carēti yanmā-

mayaṅ mahātmā matimānuvāca.

tasyaiva tadrāma! vacō.nurūpa-

midaṅ punaḥ karma ca mē.nurūpam4.24.8৷৷


rāma! O Rama!, mahātmā high-souled, matimān wise, ayam this , tvā you, na jighāṅsāmi I do not like to kill you, cara you may move about, iti this, yat that Vali, mām to me, uvāca had said, tat punaḥ again that, tasyaiva to him, anurūpam was fitting, idam this, vacaḥ words, karma ca and that action, mē of mine, anurūpam is in keeping with my nature.

'O Rama! when the wise, high-souled Vali said to me, 'I do not like to kill you in this place; be gone from here', his words reflected his nobility. This action of mine (killing of Vali) is, on the other hand, in consonance with my nature.
bhrātā kathaṅ nāma mahāguṇasya

bhrāturvadhaṅ rāghava rōcayēta.

rājyasya duḥkhasya ca vīra! sāraṅ

vicintayankāmapuraskṛta.ssan4.24.9৷৷


rāghava O Rama!, vīra hero!, kāmapuraskṛta.ssan succumbed to passion, bhrātā brother, rājyasya kingdom's, duḥkhasya ca of grief, sāram essence, cintayan thinking, mahāguṇasya of a virtuous, bhrātuḥ brother's, vadham killing, katham nāma how can, rōcayēta to accept.

'O Rama! prompted by passion, without thinking of the difference between obtaining the kingdom to satisfy one's desire and the consequent grief, which brother would be willing to kill his virtuous elder brother?
vadhō hi mē matō nāsītsvamāhātmyāvyatikramāt.

mamā.sīdbuddhidaurātmyātprāṇahārī vyatikramaḥ4.24.10৷৷


svamāhātmyāvyatikramāt transgress one's own noble nature, mē vadhaḥ killing, mataḥ acceptable, nāsīt was not, mama me, buddhidaurātmyāt due to my wicked thought, prāṇahārī slayer, vyatikramaḥ overlooking āsīt became.

'The idea of killing me was not acceptable to his noble nature, while my wicked thought caused his death.
drumaśākhāvabhagnō.haṅ muhurtaṅ pariniṣṭanan.

sāntvayitvā tvanēnōktō na punaḥ kartumarhasi4.24.11৷৷


drumaśākhāvabhagnaḥ with the branch of a tree, muhūrtam for a while, pariniṣṭanan screamed, aham I, anēna by him, sāntvayitvā conciliating words, punaḥ again, kartum to do, na arhasi not proper, uktaḥ told.

'When my brother hit me with the branch of a tree I screamed for a while. But he pacified me and said it was improper and he would not repeat it.
bhrātṛtvamāryabhāvaśca dharmaścānēna rakṣitaḥ.

mayā krōdhaśca kāmaśca kapitvaṅ ca pradarśitam4.24.12৷৷


anēna by him, bhrātṛtvam brotherliness āryabhāvaśca feeling of respect, dharmaśca feeling of duty, rakṣitaḥ protected, mayā by me, krōdhaśca anger, kāmaśca passion, kapitvaṅ ca monkey nature, pradirśitam is exhibited.

'Thus while nobility, a feeling of respect,brotherliness and duty was shown to me by my brother, I exhibited wrath, passion and frivolity, the nature of the monkey.
acintanīyaṅ parivarjanīya-

manīpsanīyaṅ svanavēkṣaṇīyam.

prāptō.smi pāpmānamimaṅ narēndra!

bhrāturvadhāttvāṣṭravadhādivēndra:4.24.13৷৷


narēndra O king, bhrātuḥ a brother's, vadhāt with his death, tvāṣṭravadhāt by killing Tvashta, indra Indra, iva similarly, acintanīyam unthinkable, parivarjanīyam avoidable, anīpsanīyam undesirable, svanavēkṣaṇīyam ignoble, imm this, pāpmānam sinful act, prāptaḥ asmi I committed.

'O king ! just as Indra committed sin by killing Tvashta, I have reaped the sin by killing my brorther which is unthinkable, avoidable, undesirable and ignoble.
pāpmānamindrasya mahī jalaṅ ca

vṛkṣāśca kāmaṅ jagṛhuḥ striyaśca.

kō nāma pāpmānamimaṅ kṣamēta

śākhāmṛgasya pratipattumicchēt৷৷4.24.14৷৷


kāmaṅ surely, indrasya Indra's, pāpmānam sinful action, mahī earth, jalaṅ ca and water, vṛkṣāśca and
trees, striyaśca women, jagṛhuḥ received, śākhāmṛgasya of an animal moving on branches of plants, a monkey, imam this, pāpmānam sin, kō nāma who will, kṣamēta will pardon, pratipattum to receive, icchēta will desire.

'Trees owned the sin of Indra and it was shared by the earth, water and women voluntarily.But who is there to pardon a monkey and own the sin?
nārhāmi sammānamimaṅ prajānāṅ

na yauvarājyaṅ kuta ēva rājyam.

adharmayuktaṅ kulanāśayukta-

mēvaṅvidhaṅ rāghava! karma kṛtvā4.24.15৷৷


rāghava! Rama!, adharmayuktam unrighteous, kulanāśayuktam that which destroys the clan, ēvaṅvidham such, karma deed, kṛtvā having done, prajānām of people, imam this, sammānam respect, na arhāmi I am not fit, yauvarājyam heir-apparent , na not, rājyam kingdom, kuta ēva what to say.

'O Rama! having acted in an unrighteous manner, which destroys the clan, I am not fit to accept the respect of people nor the status of a prince regent, what to speak of kingship?
pāpasya kartā.smi vigarhitasya

kṣudrasya lōkāpakṛtasya caiva.

śōkō mahānmāmabhivartatē.yaṅ

vṛṣṭēryathā nimnamivāmbuvēgaḥ4.24.16৷৷


vigarhitasya of a condemned one, kṣudrasya of a mean act, lōkāpakṛtasya act harmful to the world, pāpasya of sin, kartā committed, asmi I have, vṛṣṭēḥ ambuvēgaḥ iva similar to the speed of rain water (that reaches low levels), mahān great, ayaṅ śōkaḥ this sorrow, mām me, nimnam to a low-lying area, iva like, abhivartatē engulfed.

'I have committed a sin which is condemned by the world. This intense grief has engulfed me just as the flow of rain water inundates the low-lying area when it rains.
sōdaryaghātāparagātravālaḥ

santāpahastākṣiśirōviṣāṇaḥ.

ēnōmayō māmabhihanti hastī

dṛptō nadīkūlamiva pravṛddhaḥ৷৷4.24.17৷৷


sōdaryaghātāparagātravālaḥ slaying of brother forming a tail of the body, santāpahastākṣiśirōviṣāṇaḥ remorse forming the trunk, eyes, head and tusks, ēnōmayaḥ sinful, dṛptaḥ proud, pravṛddhaḥ growing, hastī elephant, mām me, nadīkūlamiva like the banks of a river, abhihanti is striking me.

'The elephant of sin (hanging heavily on me) has a tail of treacherous killing of one's own brother, which has resulted in deep sorrow in the form of a trunk, eyes, head and tusks.This elephant is striking at me as he would strike the bank of a river when he grows strong and gets puffed up with the pride of energy. (The idea of a proud elephant striking at the target is superimposed on the sin committed by Sugriva.The animal's tail is the killing of a brother. Sugriva's remorse spreads all over the body trunk, eyes, head and tusks of the animal. As a proud elephant strikes at the river bank the sin is striking at Sugriva to destroy him. The Rupaka here is perfect and total).
aṅhō batēdaṅ nṛvarāviṣahyaṅ

nivartatē mē hṛdi sādhuvṛttam.

vivarṇamagnau paritapyamānaṅ

kiṭṭaṅ yathā rāghava! jātarūpam4.24.18৷৷


nṛvara O distinguished sire!, rāghava! O Rama, mē in my, hṛdi in heart, sādhuvṛttam good behaviour, idam this, aṅhaḥ this anxiety, aviṣahya unbearable, agnau in fire, paritapyamānam being
burnt, vivarṇam brightens in colour, jātarūpam gold, kiṭṭaṅ yathā like the dirt, nivartatē turned, bata indeed.

'O distinguished Rama! this anxiety is unbearable for me. My good behaviour is relegated to the back of my heart unable to bear the sin, just like the dirt surfaces pushing the bright colour of gold when burnt in fire.
mahābalānāṅ hariyūthapānā-

midaṅ kulaṅ rāghava! mannimittam.

asyāṅgadapyāpi ca śōkatāpā

dardhasthitaprāṇamitīva manyē৷৷4.24.19৷৷


rāghava Rama!, mannamittam on my account, asya of this, aṅgadasya Angada's, śōkatāpāt ca due to remorse, mahābalānām of the strong one's, hariyūthapānām of the leaders of monkey troops, idaṅ kulam this race, ardhasthitaprāṇam half-dead, itīva like this, manyē I feel.

'O Rama! this race of mighty monkey chiefs is as though reduced to a half-dead state because of my action and the grief of Angada.
sutassulabhyassujanassuvaśyaḥ

kutastu putrassadṛśō.ṅgadēna.

na cāpi vidyēta sa vīra! dēśō

yasminbhavētsōdarasannikarṣaḥ4.24.20৷৷


aṅgadēna with Angada, sadṛśaḥ find, sujanaḥ a good man sulabhya easily accessible in need, suvaśyaḥ sutaḥ easily controllable son, putraḥ son, kutaḥ while, vīra O warrior!, yasmin wherever, sōdarasannikarṣaḥ association with a brother, bhavēt may be, saḥ dēśaḥ cāpi place too, na vidyēta not there.

'One can find easily a son who is controllable and accessible in need but it is difficult
to find a good son like Angada, who is virtuous and mighty and who is respectful to parents. O warrior (Rama), there is no place where I can get a brother like Vali. (A brother cannot be made. His relationship is natural. Rama stresses the same subhashita in Yuddhakanda when Lakshmana swooned).
yadyaṅgadō vīravarārha jīvēt

jīvēccha mātā paripālanārtham.

vinā tu putraṅ paritāpadīnā

tārā na jīvēditi niścitaṅ mē4.24.21৷৷


yadi if, vīravarārhaḥ mighty hero, aṅgadaḥ Angada, jīvēt may live, mātā his mother, paripālanārtham to take care jīvēt will live, putraṅ vinā tu without her son, paritāpadīnā dejected and miserable, tārā Tara, na jīvēt will not live, iti this, mē my, niścitam it is my firm belief.

sō.haṅ pravēkṣyāmyatidīptamagniṅ

bhrātrā ca putrēṇa ca sakhyamicchan.

imē vicēṣyanti haripravīrā-

ssītāṅ nidēśē tava vartamānāḥ4.24.22৷৷


saḥ aham I, bhrātrā ca and with brother, putrēṇa ca and with the son, sakhyam friendship, icchan desiring, atidīptam blazing, agnim fire, pravēkṣyāmi I will enter, imē these, haripravīrāḥ monkey leaders, tavanidēśē as per your command, vartamānāḥ go around, sītām for Sita, vicēṣyanti will search.

'I am a sinner. I desire to enter the blazing fire (for atonement) in order to maintain friendship with my brother and son. At your command these vanara leaders will go
round and search for Sita.
kṛtsnaṅ tu tē sētsyati kāryamēta-

nmayyapratītē manujēndraputra

kulasya hantāramajīvanārhaṅ

rāmānujānīhi kṛtāgasaṅ mām4.24.23৷৷


manujēndraputra O prince!, rāma Rama!, mayi myself, apratītē.pi even if dead, tē your, kṛtsnam entire, ētat kāryam this task, sētsyati will be accomplished, kulasya of the whole race, hantāram who has killed, ajīvanārham unfit to live, kṛtāgasam sinful, mām to me, anujānīhi permit.

'O prince Rama! even if I am dead the entire task of yours, will be accomplished by the vanara race. I have ruined the whole race. I am sinful and not fit to live. Permit me (to enter fire).
ityēvamārtasya raghupravīraḥ

śrutvā vacō vālyanujasya tasya.

sañjātabāṣpaḥ paravīrahantā

rāmō muhūrtaṅ vimanā babhūva4.24.24৷৷


raghupravīraḥ hero of the Raghu dynasty, paravīrahantā killer of enemy heroes, rāmaḥ Rama, ārtasya of the pitiable one, vālijaghanyajasya of Vali's brother, ityēvam in this manner, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, sañjātabāṣpaḥ shedding tears in grief, muhūrtam for a while, vimanāḥ disconsolate, babhūva remained.

Rama, the hero of the Raghu dynasty, a destroyer of the enemy heroes, was moved to tears. He lost composure for a moment when he heard Sugriva's lament.
tasmin kṣaṇē.bhīkṣṇamavēkṣyamāṇaḥ

kṣitikṣamāvānbhuvanasya gōptā.

rāmō rudantīṅ vyasanē nimagnāṅ

samutsukaḥ sō.tha dadarśa tārām4.24.25৷৷


kṣitikṣamāvān tolerant like the earth, bhuvanasya of the world, gōptā protector, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, tasmin in that, kṣaṇē a moment, samutsukaḥ with kindly, abhīkṣṇam keenly, avēkṣamāṇaḥ while looking, atha then, vyasanē in grief, nimagnām plunged in, rudantīm weeping, tārām Tara, dadarśa saw.

In that moment, Rama,the protector of the world, tolerant like the earth, beheld Tara plunged in grief, looking at him again and again and weeping.
tāṅ cārunētrāṅ kapisiṅhanāthāṅ

patiṅ samāśliṣya tadā śayānām.

utthāpayāmāsuradīnasattvāṅ

mantripradhānāḥ kapivīrapatnīm4.24.26৷৷


cārunētrām beautiful- eyed, kapisiṅhanāthām whose lord was a great lion among monkeys, tadā then, patim lord, samāśliṣya by clinging, śayānām while lying down, adīnasattvām a noble lady, kapivīrapatnīm wife of the heroic monkey, tām her, mantripradhānāḥ principal ministers, utthāpayāmāsu: made her get up.

The foremost ministers of Vali lifted up the beautiful-eyed, noble Tara, wife of the monkey hero clinging to the body of her husband, a lion among monkeys.
sā visphurantī parirabhyamāṇā

bhartussakāśādapanīyamānā.

dadarśa rāmaṅ śaracāpapāṇiṅ

svatējasā sūryamiva jvalantam4.24.27৷৷


parirabhyamāṇā while she was clinging, bhartuḥ husband's, sakāśāt from his presence, apanīyamānā while she was taken away, sā she, visphurantī struggling, śaracāpapāṇim wielding bow and arrows, svatējasā by his effulgence, sūryamiva like the Sun, jvalantam glowing, rāmam Rama, dadarśa saw.

While Tara was clinging to her husband and struggling, and was being removed from there, she saw effulgent Rama holding bow and arrows glittering like the Sun.
susaṅvṛtaṅ pārthipalakṣaṇaiśca

taṅ cārunētraṅ mṛgaśābanētrā.

adṛṣṭapūrvaṅ puruṣapradhāna-

mayaṅ sa kākutstha iti prajajñē4.24.28৷৷


mṛgaśāvanētrā fawn-eyed, pārthivalakṣaṇaiḥ with all royal marks, susaṅvṛtam him who was endowed with, cārunētram beautiful-eyed, adṛṣṭapūrvam never seen before, puruṣapradhānam a magnificent man, tam him, ayam this, saḥ he, kākutstha: of Kakutstha family, iti this, prajajñē recognized.

The fawn-eyed Tara saw the magnificent man of Kakutstha family endowed with all royal marks and beautiful eyes, whom she had never seen before and knew he was Rama.
tasyēndrakalpasya durāsadasya

mahānubhāvasya samīpamāryā.

ārtā.titūrṇaṅ vyasanābhipannā

jagāma tārā parivihvalantī4.24.29৷৷


āryā noble, ārtā desperate, vyasanam agony, prapannā experiencing, tārā Tara, parivihvalantī lady shaken up, indrakalpasya equal to Indra, durāsadasya unapproachable, mahānubhāvasya great man's, tasya his, samīpam proximity, atitūrṇam quickly, jagāma went.

The noble Tara, desperate, agonised, totally shaken up quickly went near the magnanimous Rama, who was like Indra-unapproachable.
sā taṅ samāsādya viśuddhasattvā

śōkēna sambhrāntaśarīrabhāvā.

manasvinī vākyamuvāca tārā

rāmaṅ raṇōtkarṣaṇalabdhalakṣam4.24.30৷৷


śōkēna out of sorrow, sambhrāntaśarīrabhāvā a baffled lady with an agitated feeling, manasvinī wise, sā tārā that Tara, viśuddhasattvam of pure consciousness, raṇōtkarṣaṇalabdhalakṣam who could achieve his target due to his pre-eminence in warfare, taṅ rāmam Rama, samāsādya after approaching, vākyam these words, uvāca said.

Wise Tara, baffled out of grief and agitated, with pure consciousness, approached Rama, eminent in warfare who could hit the target. And spoke:
tvamapramēyaśca durāsadaśca

jitēndriyaścōttamadhārmikaśca.

akṣayyakīrtiśca vicakṣaṇaśca

kṣitikṣamāvānkṣatajōpamākṣaḥ4.24.31৷৷


tvam you, apramēyaśca immeasurable, durāsadaśca unassailable, jitēndriyaśca a self-controlled man, uttamadhārmēkaśca best among the righteous, akṣayyakīrtiśca of undecaying fame, vicakṣaṇaśca
with a sense of discrimination, kṣitikṣamāvān with forbearance like earth, kṣatajōpamākṣaḥ red-corner- eyed

'You are immeasurable, unassailable, self- controlled, and best among the righteous. Your fame never diminishes. You have great sense of discrimination. You are known to possess forbearance like the mother earth. Your eyes are red-cornered (which is a sign of valour).
tvamāttabāṇāsanabāṇapāṇi

rmahābalassaṅhananōpapannaḥ.

manuṣyadēhābhyudayaṅ vihāya

divyēna dēhābhyudayēna yuktaḥ৷৷4.24.32৷৷


āttabāṇāsanabāṇapāṇiḥ wielder of bow and arrows, mahābalaḥ mighty, saṅhananōpapannaḥ has power to destroy, tvam you, manuṣyadēhābhyudayam mighty limbs human, vihāya leaving, divyēna a divine, dēhābhyudayēna assumed a form, yuktaḥ endowed.

'You are wielding bow and arrows. You possess mighty human limbs that have the power to destroy the enemy .You have assumed a divine- human body.
yēnaika bāṇēna hataḥ priyō mē

tēnaiva māṅ tvaṅ jahi sāyakēna.

hatā gamiṣyāmi samīpamasya

na māmṛtē rāma! ramēta vālī4.24.33৷৷


vīra O warrior!, yēna by whom, ēka bāṇēna with a single arrow, mē priyaḥ my beloved, hataḥ killed, tēna ēva by the same, māṅ me, tvam you, mām me, sāyakēna with an arrow, jahīhi you may kill, hatā killed, asya his, samīpam near, gamiṣyāmi I will go, māṅ vinā without me, vālī Vali, na ramēta will not be happy.

'O warrior! kill me by the same single arrow with which you killed my beloved lord,Vali. I will join him after death as he will not be happy without me.
svargē.pi padmāmalapatranētra

ssamētya samprēkṣya ca māmapaśyan.

na hyēṣa uccāvacatāmracūḍā

vicitravēṣāpsarasō.bhajiṣyat৷৷4.24.34৷৷


padmāmalapatranētra with eyes of clear petals of a lotus, ēṣaḥ he, svargē api even in heaven, samētya after reaching, samprēkṣya looking around, mām me, apaśyan by not seeing me, uccāvacatāmracūḍā adorned with different kinds of reddish flowers in hair, vicitravēṣāpsarasaḥ wonderfully dressed apsarasas, na abhajiṣyat would not join them.

'If Vali with eyes of clear petals of a lotus does not see me in heaven, he may not join the wonderfully dressed apsarasas adorned with different kinds of red flowers in their hair.
svargē.pi śōkaṅ ca vivarṇatāṅ ca

mayā vinā prāppyati vīra! vālī.

ramyē nagēndrasya taṭāvakāśē

vidēhakanyārahitō yathā tvam4.24.35৷৷


vīra O hero!, vidēhakanyārahitaḥ without the princess of Videha, Sita, tvam you, nagēndrasya a mountain's, ramyē in a delightful, taṭāvakāśē on the slopes, yathā as, vālī Vali, svargē.pi even in heaven, mayā vinā without me, śōkaṅ ca and in grief, vivarṇatāṅ ca and pale, prāpsyati will get.

'O Rama! Vali will experience sorrow and become pale bereft of me even in heaven just as you are filled with sorrow even on a delightful mountain slope bereft of princess of Videha.
tvaṅ vēttha yāvadvanitāvihīnaḥ

prāpnōti duḥkhaṅ puruṣaḥ kumāraḥ.

tattvaṅ prajānan jahi māṅ na vālī

duḥkhaṅ mamādarśanajaṅ bhajēta4.24.36৷৷


kumāraḥ young, puruṣaḥ man, vanitāvihīnaḥ separated from wife, duḥkham grief, prāpnōti will get, tvam you, nēttha tāvat you are aware of it, tat that, prajānan while knowing, tvam you, mām me, jahi kill me, vālī Vali, mama of me, adarśanajam arising due to my absence, duḥkham sorrow, na bhajēta he will not experience.

'You are aware of the grief of a young man separated from his wife. Kill me so that I can go to Vali. Let not Vali experience the sorrow of not seeing me.
yaccāpi manyēta bhavānmahātmā

strīghātadōṣō na bhavēttu mahyam.

ātmēyamasyēti ca māṅ jahi tvaṅ

na strīvadhassyānmanujēndraputra!৷৷4.24.37৷৷


manujēndraputra O prince!, mahātmā great, bhavān you, mahyam to me, strīghātadōṣaḥ blemish of killing a woman, na bhavēt will not have, manyēta think, yacca as it is, iyam she, asya his, ātmā soul, iti thus, mām me, tvam you, jahi kill, strīvadhaḥ killing a woman, na syāt may not be incurred.

'O prince! as you are great, you might think of the blemish of killing a woman. Since Tara is Vali's soul, you may kill me. It will not amount to killing a woman.(You will only be killing the soul of Vali by killing Tara).
śāstraprayōgādvividhācca vēdā

dātmāhyananyaḥ puruṣasya dārāḥ.

dārāpradānānnahi dānamanya-

tpradṛśyatē jñānavatāṅ hi lōkē4.24.38৷৷


śāstraprayōgāt by the procedure ordained in the sastras, vividhāt in many ways, vēdāt from statements in the Vedas, dārāḥ a wife, puruṣasya husband's, ātmāhyacanyaḥ an inseparable part of the soul, lōkē in the world, dārapradānāt restoring a wife to her husband, anyat other than that, dānam an offering, jñānavatām for the learned people, na pradṛśyatē hi is not seen.

'The sacred texts as well as Vedic statements declare that wife is an inseparable part of the husband's soul. To the learned, there is no greater offering in the world than restoring the wife to her husband. You will not beget any sin by killing me.
tvaṅ cāpi māṅ tasya mama priyasya

pradāsya sē dharmamavēkṣya vīra!

anēna dānēna na lapsyasē tva-

madharmayōgaṅ mama vīra ghātāt4.24.39৷৷


vīra O gallant prince, tvaṅ cāpi you also, dharmam dharma, avēkṣya considering carefully, mām me, mama priyasya to my beloved, tasya to him, pradāsyasē give away, tvam you, anēna by this, dānēna by the offering, mama my, ghātāt by killing me, adharmayōgam folly of committing an unrighteous act, na lapsyasē will not incur.

'O gallant prince ! if you give me away to my dear lord, carefully considering dharma, you will not be committing any adharma by killing me since it will be an offering.
ārtāmanāthāmapanīyamānā-

mēvaṅ vidhāmarhasi māṅ nihantum.

ahaṅ hi mātaṅgavilāsagāminā

plavaṅgamānāmṛṣabhēṇa dhīmatā4.24.40৷৷

vinā varārhōttamahēmamālinā

ciraṅ na śakṣyāmi narēndra jīvitum.

ityēvamuktastu vibhurmahātmā

tārāṅ samāśvāsya hitaṅ babhāṣē4.24.41৷৷


narēndra king, ārtām to the helpless , anāthām to an orphan, apanīyamānām a woman torn away, ēvaṅ vidhām to this state, mām me, nihantum to kill, arhasi you should, aham I, mātaṅgavilāsagāminā with the majestic gait of a proud elephant, dhīmatā wise, varārhōttamahēmamālinā adorned with the choicest golden necklace, plavaṅgamānāṅ ṛṣabhēṇa vinā without the bull among the monkeys, ciram for a long time, jīvitum to live, na śakṣyāmi not be able, ityēvam in this manner, uktaḥ having implored, vibhuḥ lord of the earth, mahātmā a great soul, tārām Tara, samāśvāsya consoling, hitam advice, babhāṣē spoke.

'O king! it is proper on your part to kill me as I am in great distress. I am a helpless orphan torn away from her husband.O king! I will not live long without the wise leader of monkeys who walked majestically like an elephant and wore the choicest golden necklace'. Implored by Tara this way, the great soul, Rama, lord of the earth said to Tara these words of consolation:
mā vīrabhāryē! vimatiṅ kuruṣva

lōkō hi sarvō vihitō vidhātrā.

taṅ caiva sarvaṅ sukhaduḥkhayōgaṅ

lōkō.bravīttēna kṛtaṅ vidhātrā৷৷4.24.42৷৷


vīrabhāryē O wife of a valiant one!, vimatim disconsolate thought, mākuruṣva not entertain, sarvaḥ all, lōkaḥ worlds, vidhātrā by the creator, vihitaḥ hi is fixed, sarvam all, tam such, sukhaduḥkhayōgaṅ caiva state of happiness and sorrow also, tēna vidhātrā by that creator, kṛtam done, lōkaḥ people, abravīt have maintained.

'O wife of a valiant warrior! Do not lose heart. The entire world is controlled by the creator. People maintain that joy and sorrow are foreordained.
trayō.hi lōkā vihitaṅ vidhānaṅ

nātikramantē vaśagā hi tasya.

prītiṅ parāṅ prāpsyasi tāṅ tathaiva

putrastu tē prāpsyati yauvarājyam.

dhātrā vidhānaṅ vihitaṅ tathaiva

na śūrapatnayaḥ paridēvayanti4.24.43৷৷


trayaḥ all the three, lōkāḥ (api) worlds also, tasya his, vaśagāḥ hi are under his control, vihitam destined, vidhānam course, na atikramantē do not overstep the arrangement, parām supreme, tāṅ prītim such happiness, tathaiva by that, prāpsyasi will get, tē your, putraśca also son, yauvarājyam heir-apparent, prāpsyati will get, dhātrā by the creator, vidhānam arrangement, tathaiva in such a manner, vihitam is determined, śūrapatnayaḥ wives of warriors, na paridēvayanti will not be wailing.

āśvāsitā tēna tu rāghavēṇa

prabhāvayuktēna parantapēna.

sā vīrapatnī dhvanatā mukhēna

suvēṣarūpā virarāma tārā4.24.44৷৷


prabhāvayuktēna by the influential, parantapēna by the scorcher of enemies, rāghavēṇa by Rama, tēna by him, āśvāsitā a lady consoled, vīrapatnī wife of a warrior, dhvanatā loud with wail, mukhēna countenance, suvēṣarūpā charming appearance, sā tārā that Tara, virarāma stopped.

Consoled by the influential Rama, scorcher of enemies, Tara the charming wife of a warrior, stopped wailing aloud.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē caturviṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentyfourth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
