[Rama exhorts Tara on fate and time --- preparation for the funeral --- grief of monkeys and Angada --- performance of funeral rites.]

sugrīvaṅ caiva tārāṅ ca sāṅgadaṅ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.

samānaśōkaḥ kākutstha ssāntvayannidamabravīt৷৷4.25.1৷৷


sahalakṣmaṇaḥ accompanied by Lakshmana, samānaśōkaḥ equally sad, caiva also, kākutstha Kakutstha (Rama), sugrīvaṅ Sugriva, sāṅgadam along with Angada, tārāṅ ca and Tara, sāntvayan pacifying, idam these words, abravīt said.

Rama and Lakshmana were equally sad. Rama, scion of the Kakutstha race, consoled Sugriva, Tara as well as Angada in the following words:
na śōkaparitāpēna śrēyasā yujyatē mṛtaḥ.

yadatrānantaraṅ kāryaṅ tatsamādhātumarhatha4.25.2৷৷


śōkaparitāpēna by lamenting, mṛtaḥ the dead, śrēyasā with well-being, na yujyatē will not gain, atra here, yat whatever, anantaram later, kāryam should be done, tat that, samādhātum to take up, arhatha you may do.

'No lamentation revives the dead. So you should take up whatever is required now.
lōkavṛttamanuṣṭhēyaṅ kṛtaṅ vō bāṣpamōkṣaṇam.

na kālāduttaraṅ kiñcitkarma śakyamupāsitum4.25.3৷৷


lōkavṛttam worldly way, anuṣṭhēyam should be performed, vaḥ by you, bāṣpamōkṣaṇam shedding tears, kṛtam is done, kālāt after lapse of time, uttaram later, param supreme, kiñcit karma even a little task, upāsitum to be engaged in, na śakyam not possible.

'You have to go the worldly way. You have shed tears enough. Time is passing. You cannot perform the funeral after the lapse of appropriate time.
niyatiḥ kāraṇaṅ lōkē niyatiḥ karmasādhanam.

niyatissarvabhūtānāṅ niyōgēṣviha kāraṇam4.25.4৷৷


lōkē the worlds, niyatiḥ fate, kāraṇam cause, niyatiḥ fate, karmasādhanam to accomplish tasks, iha here, sarvabhūtānām for all beings, niyōgēṣu to assign respective duties, niyatiḥ fate, kāraṇam is the cause.

'Fate is the cause of the world. Fate is the means of accomplishment. Fate assigns duties to all beings.
na kartā kasyacitkaścinniyōgē cāpinēśvaraḥ.

svabhāvē vartatē lōkastasya kālaḥ parāyaṇam4.25.5৷৷


kasyacit for any one, niyōgē in controlling, kaścit any one, kartā agent of action, na not even, īśvaraḥ api ca Iswara also, na not, lōkaḥ world, svabhāvē by nature, vartatē follows, tasya for that, kālaḥ only time, parāyaṇam ultimate cause.

'No one can control another's action. No one including God can be the agent of action. No one has the power to entrust duty to others. This entire world is governed by one's own nature. Nature in turn is governed by Time (fate).
na kālaḥ kālamatyēti na kālaḥ parihīyatē.

svabhāvaṅ ca samāsādya na kaścidativartatē4.25.6৷৷


kālaḥ Iswara, kālam time, na atyēti not deviate, kālaḥ fate, na parihīyatē is not subjected any concession, kaścit anybody, svabhāvam one's own nature, samāsādya after exercising, na ativartatē cannot transgress.

'God (though independent) does not deviate from Time. Time cannot be escaped or
trangressed. It cannot be condoned or avoided. No one can transgress their own nature.
na kālasyāsti bandhutvaṅ na hēturna parākramaḥ.

na mitrajñātisambandhaḥ kāraṇaṅ nātmanō vaśaḥ4.25.7৷৷


kālasya Time, bandhutvam relationship, nāsti is not there, ātmanō vaśaḥ self itself, hētuḥ reason, na no, parākramaḥ valour, na not, mitrajñātisambandhaḥ relationship based on friendship, kāraṇam cause, na no.

'Time has no consideration for relationship, friendship, or kinship or valour. Time itself is the cause. It is never under one's control.
kiṅ tu kālaparīṇāmō draṣṭavyassādhu paśyatā.

dharmaścārthaśca kāmaśca kālakramasamāhitāḥ4.25.8৷৷


kiṅ tu however, sādhu properly, paśyatā by a person who can see, kālaparīṇāmaḥ effect of fate, draṣṭavyaḥ should be visualised, dharmaśca and dharma, arthaśca even wealth, kāmaśca and pleasures, kālakramasamāhitāḥ are ordained by an order which is controlled by fate.

'However a wise man should visualise the turn of events in course of time with the right vision. Dharma, artha and kama are controlled by an order laid down by Time.
itassvāṅ prakṛtiṅ vālī gataḥprāptaḥ kriyāphalam.

dharmārthakāma saṅyōgaiḥ pavitraṅ plavagēśvaraḥ4.25.9৷৷


plavagēśvaraḥ king of monkeys, vālī vali, itaḥ dead, svām his own, prakṛtim nature, gataḥ has reached, dharmārthakāmasaṅyōgaiḥ with the combination of dharma, wealth and pleasures, pavitram sacred, kriyāphalam result of his action, prāptaḥ attained.

'Vali, king of monkeys is dead and gone. He acted according to his own nature and attained the sacred fruit of his action comensurate with dharma, wealth and pleasures
in this world.
svadharmasya ca saṅyōgājjitastēna mahātmanā.

svargaḥ parigṛhītaśca prāṇānaparirakṣatā4.25.10৷৷


prāṇān life, aparirakṣitā by not protecting, tēna mahātmanā by that great soul, svadharmasya samyōgāt by virtue of his own dharma, svargaḥ heaven, jitaḥ won, parigṛhītaśca has been accepted.

'Great Vali has earned a place in heaven by virtue of his own dharma and not caring for his own life .He has got the heavenly position he earned.
ēṣā vai niyatiśśēṣṭhā yāṅ gatō hariyūthapaḥ.

tadalaṅ paritāpēna prāptakālamupāsyatām4.25.11৷৷


hariyūthapaḥ chief of monkeys, yām whichever, gataḥ has gone, ēṣā this, niyatiḥ destiny, śrēṣṭhā vai is the very best, tat therefore, paritāpēna to regret, alam no need of, prāptakālam at this time, upāsyatām attend.

'The state attained by the chief of monkeys is an excellent one.Therefore there is no need to regret. Attend to your duties (relating to rites)'
vacanāntē tu rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā.

avadatpraśritaṅ vākyaṅ sugrīvaṅ gatacētasam4.25.12৷৷


rāmasya Rama's, vacanāntē at the end of his address, paravīrahā slayer of enemy warriors, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, gatacētasam he who had lost his senses, sugrīvam Sugriva, praśritam humbly, vākyam these words, avadat said.

Seeing Sugriva had lost his senses, Lakshmana, the slayer of enemy warriors humbly said at the end of Rama's address:
kuru tvamasya sugrīva! prētakāryamanantaram.

tārāṅgadābhyāṅ sahitō vālinō dahanaṅ prati৷৷4.25.13৷৷


sugrīva! O Sugriva!, tvam you, tārāṅgadābhyām with Tara and Angada, sahitaḥ along with, asya his, anantaram later, prētakāryam funeral rites, kuru you may do, vālinaḥ for Vali, dahanaṅ prati for the cremation.

'O Sugriva! perform with Tara and Angada the funeral obsequies relating to the cremation of Vali.
samājñāpaya kāṣṭhāni śuṣkāni ca bahūni ca.

candanādīni divyāni vālisaṅskārakāraṇāt4.25.14৷৷


śuṣkāni dried, bahūni many, kāṣṭhāni logs of wood, divyāni best one, candanādīni ca sandalwood and such things, vālisaṅskāra kāraṇāt for the funeral rites of Vali, samājñāpaya order.

'Let the best of dry logs and sandalwood be ordered for the funeral rites of Vali.
samāśvāsaya cainaṅ tvamaṅgadaṅ dīnacētasam.

mā bhūrbāliśabuddhistvaṅ tvadadhīnamidaṅ puram4.25.15৷৷


tvam you, dīnacētasam despondent, ēnam him, aṅgadam Angada, samāśvāsaya you may pacify, tvam you, bāliśabuddhiḥ mā bhūḥ you may not be childish, idaṅ puram this city, tvadadhīnam is under you.

'Pacify the despondent Angada so that he does not entertain childish thoughts any more. This city is under your control (now).
aṅgadastvānayēnmālyaṅ vastrāṇi vividhāni ca.

ghṛtaṅ tailamathō gandhānyaccātra samanantaram4.25.16৷৷


aṅgadastu Angada for his part, mālyam garlands, vividhāni of many kinds, vastrāṇi ca clothes, ghṛtam clarified butter, tailam oil, athō now, gandhāni fragrants, atra here, yat whatever, samanantaram is required to be collected, ānayēt let him get.

'Let Angada for his part collect garlands of many kinds, clothes, clarified butter, oil, fragrants and all that is required to be procured.
tvaṅ tāra! śibikāṅ śīghramādāyāgaccha sambhramāt.

tvarā guṇavatī yuktā hyasminkālē viśēṣataḥ4.25.17৷৷


tāra Tara! (a monkey), tvam you, sambhramāt hasten, śīghram quickly, śibikām litter, ādāya after getting, āgaccha may come, tvarā swiftly, guṇavatī tied with ropes, viśēṣataḥ specially, asminkālē at this time, yuktā hi will be proper.

'O Tara! quickly get a swift-moving litter fastened with ropes specially suitable for this occasion.
sajjībhavantu plavagāśśibikāvāhanōcitāḥ.

samarthā balinaścaiva nirhariṣyanti vālinam৷৷4.25.18৷৷


śibikāvāhanōcitāḥ those monkeys who can carry the litter, samarthāḥ capable ones, balinaścaiva and strong also, plavagāḥ monkeys, sajjībhavantu let them get ready, vālinam Vali's, nirhariṣyanti they will carry him.

'Let those who are strong and capable among the monkeys be ready to carry the dead body of Vali on a litter'.
ēvamuktvā tu sugrīvaṅ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ.

tasau bhrātṛsamīpasthō lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā4.25.19৷৷


sumitrānandavardhanaḥ the delight of Sumitra, paravīrahā slayer of enemies, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana,
sugrīvam to Sugriva, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, bhrātṛsamīpasthaḥ near his brother, sthau stood.

Having thus spoken to Sugriva, Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, slayer of enemies, stood by his brother
lakṣmaṇasya vacaśśrutvā tārassambhrāntamānasaḥ.

pravivēśa guhāṅ śīghraṅ śibikāsaktamānasaḥ4.25.20৷৷


tāraḥ Tara, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā on hearing, sambhrāntamānasaḥ with exited mind, śibikāsaktamānasaḥ entrusted to get a latter, śīghram quickly, guhām cave, pravivēśa entered.

On hearing Lakshmana, Tara in an excited state quickly entered the cave city to get the litter.
ādāya śibikāṅ tārassa tu paryāpatatpunaḥ.

vānarairuhyamānāṅ tāṅ śūrairudvahanōcitaiḥ4.25.21৷৷


saḥ tāraḥ that Tara, udvahanōcitaiḥ by those who can carry, śūraiḥ by heroes, vānaraiḥ by monkeys, uhyamānām being carried, tām that, śibikām litter, ādāya after getting, punaḥagain, paryāpatat jumped in.

Tara jumped in on to the litter carried by strong monkeys.
divyāṅ bhadrāsanayutāṅ śibikāṅ syandanōpamām.

pakṣikarmabhirācitrāṅ drumakarmavibhūṣitām4.25.22৷৷

ācitāṅ citrapattībhi ssuniviṣṭāṅ samantataḥ.

vimānamiva siddhānāṅ jālavātāyanānvitām4.25.23৷৷

suniyuktāṅ viśālāṅ ca sukṛtāṅ viśvakarmaṇā.

dāruparvatakōpētāṅ cārukarmapariṣkṛtām4.25.24৷৷

varābharaṇahāraiśca citramālyōpaśōbhitām.

guhāgahanasañchannāṅ raktacandanabhūṣitām4.25.25৷৷

puṣpaughaissamabhicchannāṅ padmamālābhirēva ca.

taruṇādityavarṇābhirbhrājamānābhirāvṛtām4.25.26৷৷


divyām marvellous, bhadrāsanayutām with a splendid seat, syandanōpamām comparable to a chariot, pakṣikarmabhiḥ with different forms of birds, ācitrām carved, drumakarmavibhūṣitām decorated with the designs of trees, citrapattībhiḥ with colourful pictures, ācitām covered with, samantataḥ on every side, suniviṣṭām perfectly fixed, siddhānām of saints, vimānamiva like aerial-chariot, jālavātāyanāyutām with grilled windows, suniyuktām fitted, viśālāṅ ca also big, sukṛtām well-carved, viśvakarmaṇā by Visvakarma, dāruparvatakōpētām decorated with wooden mountains, cārukarmapariṣkṛtām embelished beautifully, varābharaṇahāraiśca decorated with choicest ornaments, citramālyōpaśōbhitām decorated with beautiful garlands, guhāgahanasañchannām with artificially created caverns and grottos, raktacandanabhūṣitām furbished with red sandal paste, puṣpaughaiḥ with heaps of flowers, taruṇādityavarṇābhiḥ resembling the colour of the rising Sun, bhrājamānābhiḥ with radiant ones, padmamālābhiḥwith lotus garlands, āvṛtām covered, śibikām palanquin

A swift-moving, marvellous palanquin designed by Viswakarma was brought. Covered with colourful pictures of birds and trees on every side it looking like an aerial chariot fit for saints. Fitted with a splendid seat grilled windows, artificially made small caverns and grottos of wood was embellished with carvings of mountains, choice ornaments and garlands. With red sandal paste, red scented flowers and red lotus garlands, it resembled the rising Sun.
īdṛśīṅ śibikāṅ dṛṣṭvā rāmō lakṣmaṇamabravīt.

kṣipraṅ vinīyatāṅ vālī prētakāryaṅ vidhīyatām4.25.26৷৷


īdṛśīm such, śibikām palanquin, dṛṣṭvā seeing, rāmaḥ Rama, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, abravīt
said, vālī Vali, kṣipram quickly, vinīyatām carried, prētakāryam last rites, vidhīyatām be performed.

Seeing the palanquin, Rama said to Lakshmana 'Let the body of Vali be placed in the palanquin quickly and last rites duly performed'.
tatō vālinamudyamya sugrīvaśśibikāṅ tadā.

ārōpayata vikrōśannaṅgadēna sahaiva tu4.25.27৷৷


tataḥ then, aṅgadēna sahaiva tu along with Angada , sugrīvaḥSugriva, vikrōśan while crying aloud, vālinam Vali, udyamya after lifting, tadā then, śibikām palanquin, ārōpayata placed him on it

Then Sugriva along with Angada, crying aloud bitterly, lifted the body (of Vali) and placed it on the palanquin.
ārōpya śibikāṅ caiva vālinaṅ gatajīvitam.

alaṅkāraiśca vividhairmālyairvastraiśca bhūṣitam4.25.28৷৷


vividhaiḥ with different, alaṅkāraiśca with ornaments, mālyaiḥ with garlands, vastraiśca clothes, bhūṣitam adorned, gatajīvitam dead, vālinam Vali, śibikām palanquin, ārōpya on placing.

Vali's deadbody was placed on the palanquin, decorated with many ornaments, garlands and clothes;
ājñāpayattadā rājā sugrīva plavagēśvaraḥ.

aurdhvadaihikamāryasya kriyatāmanurūpataḥ৷৷4.25.29৷৷


tadā then, rājā the king, plavagēśvaraḥ king of monkeys, sugrīva Sugriva, ājñāpayat instructed, anurūpataḥ in a fitting manner, aurdhvadaihika funeral rites, āryasya for the noble sire, kriyatāṅ may be conducted

King Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, said, 'Let the funeral rites of my noble sire be performed in a fitting manner'.
viśrāṇayantō ratnāni vividhāni bahūnyapi.

agrataḥ plavagā yāntu śibikā samanantaram4.25.30৷৷


plavagāḥ monkeys, vividhāni different, bahūni many, ratnāni gems, viśrāṇayantaḥ showering, agrataḥ in front, yāntu let them go, śibikā palanquin, samanantaram be followed.

'Let the monkeys march in front, showering many different gems in large quantities and let the palanquin follow.
rājñāmṛddiviśēṣā hi dṛśyantē bhuvi yādṛśāḥ.

tādṛśairiha kurvantu vānarā bhartṛsatkriyām4.25.31৷৷


bhuvi earth, rājñām for kings, yādṛśāḥ such, ṛddhiviśēṣāḥ special kinds of wealth, dṛśyantē seen, tādṛśaiḥ with such, vānarāḥ monkeys, bhartṛsatkriyām the last rites to the revered leader, ḍaha here, kurvantu may be done.

'Let the monkeys perform the funeral rites of our lord in an honourable way as expensively as has been done with regard to the obsequies of kings who ruled over this land.
tādṛśaṅ vālinaḥ kṣipraṅ prākurvannaurdhvadaihikam.

aṅgadaṅ parigṛhyā.śu tāraprabhṛtayastadā4.25.32৷৷

krōśantaḥ prayayussarvē vānarā hatabāndhavāḥ.


vālinaḥ Vali, tādṛśam such, aurdvadaihikam funeral rites, kṣipram quickly, prākurvan did, tadā then, hatabāndhavāḥ (whose) relative (Vali) was dead, tāraprabhṛtayaḥ Tara and others, sarvē all, vānarāḥ monkeys, aṅgadam Angada, parigṛhyā taking with, krōśantaḥ were crying aloud, āśu fast, prayamuḥ walked.

Tara, Angada and the other bereaved monkeys hastened to perform the funeral
ceremony of Vali-weeping.
tataḥ praṇihitāḥ sarvā vānaryōsya vaśānugāḥ4.25.33৷৷

cukruśu rvīra! vīrēti bhūyaḥ krōśanti tāḥ strīyaḥ.


tataḥ then, asya his, vaśānugāḥ those who were under his control, sarvāḥ all, vānaryaḥ female monkeys, praṇihitāḥ stretched forth, vīra! a great hero!, iti saying so, cukruśuḥ cried, tāḥ those, striyaḥ women, bhūyaḥ again, krōśanti were bewailing.

Then all the female monkeys who were in his (Vali's) harem walked past the deadbody of Vali, crying again and again 'Alas, Oh hero!'
tārāprabhṛtayassarvā vānaryō hariyūthapāḥ.

anujagmurhi bhartāraṅ krōśantyaḥ karuṇasvanāḥ4.25.34৷৷


hariyūthapāḥ chief of the monkey troops, tārāprabhṛtayaḥ Tara and others, sarvāḥ all, vānaryaḥ female monkeys, karuṇasvanāḥ with pathetically, krōśantyaḥ crying, bhartāram husband, anujagmuḥ went following, hi indeed.

Tara along with other female monkeys followed their lord, crying pathetically.
tāsāṅ ruditaśabdēna vānarīṇāṅ vanāntarē.

vanāni girayaścaiva vikrōśantīva sarvataḥ4.25.35৷৷


vanāntarē in the midst of the forest, tāsām of them, vānarīṇām of female monkeys, ruditaśabdēna by their cries, sarvataḥ all over, vanāni forest, girayaścaiva and the mountains, vikrōśantīva looked as if they were mourning.

When the female monkeys were weeping in the midst of the forest, it looked as if the forest and the hills were also mourning.
pulinē girinadyāstu viviktē jalasaṅvṛtē4.25.36৷৷

citāṅ cakrussubahavō vānarāśśōkakarśitā:.


śōkakarśitāḥ agonzied, subahavaḥ many, vānarāḥ monkeys, girinadyāḥ of a mountain stream, jalasaṅvṛtē surrounded by flow of water, viviktē in a solitary place, pulinē on the sand bank, citām a pyre, cakruḥ prepared.

Tormented with tears, the monkeys prepared in a solitary place surrounded by waters a pyre on the sandbank of a mountain stream.
avarōpya tatasskandhācchibikāṅ vāhanōcitāḥ.

tasthurēkāntamāśritya sarvē śōkasamanvitā:4.25.37৷৷


tataḥ then, sarvē all, vāhanōcitāḥ the carriers of the palanquin, skandhāt from their shoulders, śibikām palanquin, avarōpya brought down, śōkasamanvitāḥ filled with sorrow, ēkāntam solitary place, āśritya resorting to, tasthuḥ stood.

Putting down the palanquin from their shoulders on the lonely spot, the bearers stood in tears-waiting.
tatastārā patiṅ dṛṣṭvā śibikātalaśāyinam4.25.38৷৷

ārōpyāṅkē śirastasya vilalāpa suduḥkhitā.


tataḥ then, tārā Tara, śibikātalaśāyinam who was lying on the sibika, patim husband, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, suduḥkhitā a lady full of grief, tasya his, śiraḥ head, aṅkē on her lap, ārōpya placed, vilalāpa cried.

Seeing her husband lying in the palanquin, Tara, full of grief placed Vali's head on her lap and cried.
hā! vānara! mahārāja! hā nātha! mama vatsala!4.25.39৷৷

hā mahārha! mahābāhō! hā mama priya! paśya mām.

janaṅ na paśyasīmaṅ tvaṅ kasmācchōkābhipīḍitam.4.25.40৷৷


hā vānaramahārāja O monkey king!, hā mama nātha! O my great husband, hā mahārha O venerable lord!, hā mahābāhō O long-armed one!, mama my, priya dear!, mām me, paśya see, tvam you, śōkābhipīḍitam tormented with tears, imaṅ janam this person, kasmāt why, na paśyasi not see?

'Why don't you look at me, oppressed with tears, O monkey king, O my venerable lord, O long-armed one, O my dear?
prahṛṣṭamiva tē vaktraṅ gatāsōrapi mānada!

āstārkasamavarṇaṅ ca lakṣyatē jīvatō yathā4.25.41৷৷


mānada! revered self!, gatāsōrapi even though you are bereft of life, tē your, astārkasamavarṇam bears the colour of the setting Sun, vaktram face, jīvatō yathā the same colour when you were alive, iha here, prahṛṣṭam happy, dṛśyatē appears.

'O revered self! even though you are bereft of life, your face looks cheerful. It carries the colour of the setting Sun, and looks the same when you were alive.
ēṣa tvāṅ rāmarūpēṇa kālaḥ karṣati vānara.

yēna sma vidhavāssarvāḥ kṛtā ēkēṣuṇā vanē4.25.42৷৷


vānara monkey!, ēṣaḥ kālaḥ this god of death, tvām you, rāmarūpēṇa in the form of Rama, karṣati dragged away, yēna by that, vanē in the forest, ēkēṣuṇā with a single arrow, sarvāḥ all, vidhavāḥ widows, kṛtāḥ are turned.

'O monkey! a single arrow from Rama who appeared in the forest in the form of death dragged you away from us and turned us all into widows.
imāstāstava rājēndra! vānaryōvallabhāssadā.

pādairvikṛṣṭa madhvānamāgatāḥ kiṅ na budhyasē4.25.43৷৷


rājēndra O king of kings!, tava your, tāḥ those, vānaryaḥ female monkeys, vallabhāḥ wives who were dear to you, pādaiḥ on foot, tava your, vikṛṣṭam long, adhvānam path, āgatāḥ have come, kim why, na budhyasē do you not know.

'O king of kings! why don't you understand that these female monkeys, your wives who were dear to you have come on foot this long distance with great difficulty?
tavēṣṭā nanu nāmaitā bhāryāścandranibhānanāḥ.

idānīṅ nēkṣasē kastātsugrīvaṅ plavagēśvaram4.25.44৷৷


plavagēśvaram lord of monkeys, imāḥ these, candranibhānanāḥ moon-faced women, bhāryāḥ wives, tava you, iṣṭāḥ nanu your favourite ones indeed, idānīm now, sugrīvam Sugriva, kasmāt why, na vēkṣasē not seeing.

'O lord of monkeys! these moon-faced wives were indeed once your favourites. Why don't you look at them? Why don't you look Sugriva?
ētē hi sacivā rājaṅ stāraprabhṛtayastava.

puravāsī janaścāyaṅ parivāryāsatē.nagha!4.25.45৷৷


rājan O king, tāraprabhṛtayaḥ Tara and others, ētē these, tava sacivāḥ your ministers, ayam this, puravāsijanaḥ inhabitants of the capital, parivārya by surrounding you, āsatē they are sitting, anagha O sinless hero.

'O king! O sinless hero! Tara and others, your ministers as well as the inhabitants of the capital are here sitting around you.
visarjayaitān plavagānyathōcitamarindama!.

tataḥ krīḍāmahē sarvā vanēṣu madanōtkaṭāḥ4.25.46৷৷


arindama O conqueror of enemies, ētān all of them, plavagān monkeys, yathōcitaṅ in accordance with their position, visarjaya send them, tataḥ then, madanōtkaṭāḥ in a passionate way, sarvāḥ all of us, vanēṣu in the forest, krīḍāmahē will be sporting.

'O conqueror of enemies! give these monkeys their due in accordance with their status and send them back as you used to do when they were passionately sporting in your company here in this forest.
ēvaṅ vilapatīṅ tārāṅ patiśōkapariplutām.

utthāpayanti sma tadā vānaryaśśōkakarśitāḥ4.25.47৷৷


ēvam in that way, vilapatīm mourning, patiśōkapariplutām overwhelmed with sorrow due to the death of the husband, tārām Tara, tadā then, śōkakarśitāḥ those overtaken by grief, vānaryaḥ female monkeys, utthāpayanti sma helped her to stand up.

The grief-stricken female monkeys helped Tara, overwhelmed with sorrow due to her husband's death, rise from the ground.
sugrīvēṇa tatassārdhaṅmaṅgadaḥ pitaraṅ rudan.

citāmārōpayāmāsa śōkēnābhihatēndriyaḥ4.25.48৷৷


tataḥ then, saḥ aṅgadaḥ that Angada, sugrīvēṇa sārdham along with Sugriva, rudan crying, śōkēna in sorrow, abhihatēndriyaḥ with his senses numbed, pitaram father, citām on the pyre, ārōpayāmāsa placed.

Then Angada, helped by Sugriva, placed his father's body on the pyre, with his senses numbed in deep sorrow.
tatō.gniṅ vidhivaddattvā sō.pasavyaṅ cakāra ha.

pitaraṅ dīrghamadhvānaṅ prasthitaṅ vyākulēndriyaḥ4.25.49৷৷


tataḥ then, saḥ he, vyākulēndriyaḥ with disturbed senses, vidhivat as per tradition, agnim fire,
datvā offering, dīrgham long distance, adhvānam way, prasthitam departing, pitaram to father, apasavyaṅ cakāra went round once in an ante-clock manner.

Overwhelmed with sorrow, he offered fire to the father who had set out on a long journey (to heaven). As per tradition he went round the pyre ante-clock wise.
saṅskṛtya vālinaṅ tē tu vidhipūrvaṅ plavaṅgamāḥ.

ājagmurudakaṅ kartuṅ nadīṅ śubhajalāṅ śivām4.25.50৷৷


plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, taṅ vālinam that Vali, vidhivat as per tradition, saṅskṛtya after allowing it to be consumed by fire, udakaṅ kartum made water-offerings, śubhajalām a place of pure water, śivām auspicious, nadīm river, ājagmuḥ reached.

The monkeys set Vali's body to be consumed by fire as per tradition and proceeded to an auspicious river of pure water in order to offer oblation (to the departed soul).
tatastē sahitāstatra hyaṅgadaṅ sthāpya cāgrataḥ.

sugrīvatārāsahitāssiṣicurvālinē jalam4.25.51৷৷


tataḥ then, sugrīvatārāsahitāḥ along with Sugriva and Tara, tē vānarāḥ those monkeys, tatra there, sahitāḥ collectively, aṅgadam Angada, agrataḥ in front, sthāpya by placing, jalam water, siṣicuḥ they offered.

Then the monkeys along with Sugriva and Tara positioning Angada in the forefront made water-offerings (to Vali) collectively.
sugrīvēṇēva dīnēna dīnō bhūtvā mahābalaḥ.

samānaśōkaḥ kākutstha: prētakāryāṇyakārayat4.25.52৷৷


mahābalaḥ mighty, kākutstha: Kakutstha, dīnēna by the piteous, sugrīvēṇa with Sugriva, iva as though, samānaśōkaḥ equally sad, dīnaḥ pitiable one, bhūtvā was equally, prētakāryāṇi funeral rites, akārayat directed.

Mighty Rama, who was equally sorrowful and pitiable as Sugriva, directed the performance of funeral rites.
tatastu taṅ vālinamagryapauruṣaṅ

prakāśamikṣvākuvarēṣuṇā hatam.

pradīpya dīptāgnisamaujasaṅ tadā

salakṣmaṇaṅ rāmamupēyivānhariḥ4.25.53৷৷


tataḥ then, agryapauruṣam a hero of mighty prowess, prakāśam openly, ikṣvākuvarēṣuṇā by the great arrow of Rama of the Ikshvaku race, hatam dead, taṅ vālinam that Vali, pradīpya glowing, tadā then, hariḥ tawny, salakṣmaṇam with Lakshmana, dīptāgnisamaujasam glowing like the blazing fire, rāmam Rama, upēyivān approached.

After setting fire to Vali of mighty prowess whose tawny face was glowing like fire, who was killed openly by the great arrow of Rama of the Ikshvaku race, Sugriva approached Rama, and Lakshmana.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē pañcaviṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentyfifth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
