[Rama and Lakshmana reach Prasravana mountain --- description of the mountain cave where Rama and Lakshmana dwelt]

abhiṣiktē tu sugrīvē praviṣṭē vānarē guhām.

ājagāma saha bhrātrā rāmaḥ prasravaṇaṅ girim4.27.1৷৷


abhiṣiktē after consecration, vānarē the money, sugrīvē Sugriva, guhām cave, praviṣṭē entered, rāmaḥ Rama, bhrātrā saha accompanied by his brother, prasravaṇaṅ girim Prasravana mountain, ājagāma arrived.

After the consecration, Sugriva entered the cave-city (of Kishkinda) and Rama accompanied by his brother reached mountain Prasravana.
śārdūlamṛgasaṅghuṣṭaṅ siṅhairbhīmaravairvṛtam.

nānāgulmalatāgūḍhaṅ bahupādapasaṅkulam4.27.2৷৷

ṛkṣavānaragōpucchairmārjāraiśca niṣēvitam.

mēgharāśinibhaṅ śailaṅ nityaṅ śucijalāśayam৷৷4.27.3৷৷


śārdūlamṛgasaṅghuṣṭam filled with sounds of tigers and deer, bhīmaravaiḥ roaring in a terrific manner, siṅhaiḥ with lions, vṛtam surrounded with, nānāgulmalatāgūḍham covered with different kinds of shrubs and creepers, bahupādapasaṅkulam full of many kinds of trees, ṛkṣavānaragōpucchaiḥ bears, monkeys, and apes, mārjāraiśca and wild cats, niṣēvitam inhabited, mēgharāśinibham like a huge cluster of clouds, nityam always, śucijalāśramam ponds of pure water, śailam mountain.

The (Prasravana) mountain reverberated with the terrific roars of tigers and deer and lions. There were several kinds of shrubs, creepers and trees.It was inhabited by bears, apes, monkeys and wild cats in large number. The mountain was like a huge cluster of clouds. The waters in the ponds were pure.
tasya śailasya śikharē mahatīmāyatāṅ guhām.

pratyagṛhṇata vāsārthaṅ rāmassaumitriṇā saha4.27.4৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, saumitriṇā saha with Saumitri, tasya śailasya mountain's, śikharē on the top, mahatīm great/ long, āyatām wide, guhām cave, vāsārtham to reside, pratyagṛhṇata decided to reside.

Rama and Lakshmana decided to reside in the long, wide cave on top of the great mountain.
kṛtvā ca samayaṅ rāmassugrīvēṇa sahānaghaḥ.

kālayuktaṅ mahadvākyamuvāca raghunandanaḥ4.27.5৷৷

vinītaṅ bhrātaraṅ bhrātā lakṣmaṇaṅ lakṣmivardhanam.


anaghaḥ sinless, raghunandanaḥ delight of the Raghu family, bhrātā brother, rāmaḥ Rama, sugrīvēṇa saha samayam an agreement with Sugriva, kṛtvā after making, vinītam him who was obedient, bhrātaram to brother, lakṣmivardhanam enhancer of glory, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, kālayuktam appropriate for the time, mahat meaningful, vākyam word, uvāca expressed.

Sinless Rama, the delight of the Raghus made an agreement with Sugriva and then spoke appropriately to Lakshmana, his obedient brother and enhancer of glory:
iyaṅ giriguhā ramyā viśālā yuktamārutā.

asyāṅ vatsyāma saumitrē! varṣarātramarindama4.27.6৷৷


arindama O subduer of enemies, saumitrē! O Saumitri, ramyā beautiful, iyam this, giriguhā mountain cave, viśālā spacious, yuktamārutā breezy, varṣarātram rainy nights, asyām in this, vatsyāma will reside.

'O Saumitri, subduer of enemies! this beautiful mountain cave is spacious and adequately ventilated. We will reside here in the rainy season.
giriśṛṅgamidaṅ ramyamunnataṅ pārthivātmaja4.27.7৷৷

śvētābhiḥ kṛṣṇatāmrābhiśśilābhirupaśōbhitam.

nānādhātusamākīrṇaṅ darīnirjharaśōbhitam4.27.8৷৷

vividhairvṛkṣaṣaṇḍaiśca cārucitralatāyutam.

nānāvihagasaṅghuṣṭaṅ mayūraravanāditam4.27.9৷৷

mālatīkundagulmaiśca sindhuvāraiśśirīṣakaiḥ.

kadambārjunasarjaiśca puṣpitairupaśōbhitam4.27.10৷৷


pārthivātmaja O prince, śvētābhiḥ with white, kṛṣṇatāmrābhiḥ with black and red, śilābhiḥ with stones, upaśōbhitam is very enchanting, nānā dhātusamākīrṇam with different kinds of minerals scattered all over, darīnirjharaśōbhitam having fascinating caves and waterfalls, vividhaiḥ with different, vṛkṣaṣaṇḍaiśca with clusters of trees, cārucitralatāyutam with fascinating vines, nānāvihagasaṅghuṣṭam crowded with different birds, mayūravaranāditam with sounds of peacocks, mālatīkundagulmaiśca with bushes of delicate Jasmine and kunda, sindhuvāraiḥ sindhuvara flower plants, śirīṣakai: sireeshaka trees, puṣpitaiḥ in bloom, sarjaiśca and with sarja trees, upaśōbhitam very delighting, uttamam best, idam this, giriśṛṅgam this peak of mountain, unnatam is lofty.

'O prince! this lovely mountain peak is lofty. It has white, black and red stones with many kinds of minerals scattered all over. It is delightful with caves and streams, and various clusters of trees and variegated vines. The chirps of several kinds of birds as well as the sounds of excellent peacocks are heard here. This place is delightful with bushes of jasmine, kunda and sindhuvara, sireeshaka, kadamba, arjuna and sarja in bloom.
iyaṅ ca nalinī ramyā phaullapaṅkajamaṇḍitā.

nātidūrē guhāyānau bhaviṣyati nṛpātmaja4.27.11৷৷


nṛpātmaja son of a king!, phaullapaṅkajamaṇḍitā adorned with lotuses in full bloom, ramyā
endearing, iyaṅ nalinī this lotus creeper, nau for us, guhāyāḥ from the cave, nātidūrē not far from here, bhaviṣyati is located.

'O prince! this pond with lotus creeper and lotuses in full bloom is endearing. It is located not far from the cave.
prāgudakpravaṇē dēśē guhā sādhu bhaviṣyati.

paścāccaivōnnatā saumya! nivātēyaṅ bhaviṣyati4.27.12৷৷


saumya good-natured Lakshmana!, prāgudakpravaṇē descending path in the northeast, dēśē of this place, guhā cave, sādhu auspicious, bhaviṣyati it will be, paścāt west side, unnatā elevated, iyam this, nivātā free from strong wind.

'O good-natured Lakshmana! the descending path on the north-eastern side of the cave and elevation on the the west is auspicious.This place is protected from rain water and from strong wind.
guhādvārē ca saumitrē! śilā samatalā śubhā.

ślakṣṇā caivāyatā caiva bhinnāñjanacayōpamā4.27.13৷৷


saumitrē O Saumitri, guhādvārē at the entrance of the cave, samatalā even, śubhā good, ślakṣṇā smooth, āyatācaiva large, bhinnāñjanacayōpamā resembling a heap of shining collyrium, śilā a rock.

'O Lakshmana! at the entrance of the cave is a rock, smooth and large, resembling a heap of shining collyrium.
giriśṛṅgamidaṅ tāta! paśya cōttarataḥ śubham.

bhinnāñjanacayākāramambhōdharamivōtthitam4.27.14৷৷


tāta! O dear!, uttarataḥ in the north, bhinnāñjanacayākāram shaped like a heap of collyrium, utthitam risen, ambhōdharamiva like a rain-cloud, śubham auspicious, idam this, paśya see, giriśṛṅgam
mountain peak, idama this.

'O dear! look at the mountain peak in the north rising like a rain-cloud.It is auspicious. It resembles a heap of collyrium.
dakṣiṇasyāmapi diśi sthitaṅ śvētamivāparam.

kailāsaśikharaprakhyaṅ nānādhātuvibhūṣitam4.27.15৷৷


dakṣiṇasyāṅdiśi in the southern direction, sthitam is located, śvētam white, ivāparam like another, kailāsaśikhara prakhyam like the tip of Kailasa mountain, nānādhātuvibhūṣitam rich with various minerals.

'In the southern direction is a white rock appearing as if it is another mountain. It looks like mount Kailas and is rich with various minerals.
prācīnavāhinīṅ caiva nadīṅ bhṛśamakardamām.

guhāyāḥ pūrvataḥ paśya trikūṭē jāhnavīmiva4.27.16৷৷

candanaistilakaistālaistamālairatimuktakaiḥ.

padmakaiḥ saralaiścaiva aśōkaiścaiva śōbhitām4.27.17৷৷


prācīnavāhinīm flowing towards the east, bhṛśam greatly, akardamām pure, candanaiḥ with sandalwood, tilakaiḥ with tilaka, sālaiḥ with sala, tamā tamala, atimuktakaiḥ with atimuktaka (a lustrous jasmine creeper which sheds flowers profusely), padmakaiḥ with Padmaka, saralaiścaiva with sarala, aśōkaiścaiva and with asoka, śōbhitām fascinating, trikūṭē at Trikuta, jāhnavīmiva like the river Jahnavi, nadīm river, guhāyāḥ from the caves, pūrvataḥ to the east, paśya see.

'Look at the river flowing towards the east. It has clean water and flows towards the east of the cave and looks like the river Jahnavi flowing on the mount Trikuta. This place looks delightful with the sandalwood, tilaka, sala, tamala, atimukta, padmaka, sarala and asoka trees.
vānīraistimiśaiścaiva vakulaiḥ kētakairdhavaiḥ.

hintālaistiniśairnīpairvētrakaiḥ kṛtamālakaiḥ4.27.18৷৷

tīrajaiśśōbhitā bhāti nānārūpai statastataḥ.

vasanābharaṇōpētā pramadēvābhyalaṅkṛtā4.27.19৷৷


tīrajaiḥ grown on the bank, nānārūpaiḥ different kinds of, tatastataḥ here and there, vānīraiḥ with cane reeds, timiśai: timis, ēva with,vakulaiḥ vakula,kētakairdhavai: ketaka, hintālaiḥ hintala, tiniśaiḥ tinisa, nīpaiḥ (nīpavṛkṣaiḥ) kadamba trees, vētrakaiḥ cane creepers, dhavaiḥ dhavas, kṛtamālakaiḥ krutamalaka, vētasaiḥ betasa, śōbhitā beautiful, vasanābharaṇōpētā with clothes and ornaments, abhyalaṅkṛtā decorated, pramadēva like a woman, bhāti looks.

'See the different kinds of trees like canes timida, vakula, ketaka, hintala, tinisa, kadamba, dhava, krutamalaka, betasa grown here and there on the bank (of the river), which looks beautiful like a woman decorated with clothes and ornaments.
śataśaḥ pakṣisaṅghaiśca nānānādairvināditā.

ēkaikamanuraktaiśca cakravākairalaṅkṛtā৷৷4.27.20৷৷

pulinairatiramyaiśca haṅsasārasasēvitaiḥ.

prahasantīvabhātyēṣā nārī sarvavibhūṣitā৷৷4.27.21৷৷


śataśaḥ in hundreds, pakṣisaṅghaiśca with flocks of birds, nānānādairvināditā resounded with different melodies, ēkaikam each one, anuraktaiśca by the loving ones, cakravākaiḥ by ruddy geese, alaṅkṛtā beautified, atiramyaiḥ enchanting, pulinaiḥ sandy banks, haṅsasārasasēvitaiḥ filled with swans and watercranes, ēṣā this, sarvavibhūṣitā decorated all over, prahasantī laughing, nārīva like a young woman, bhāti shines.

'The river flocked with hundreds of birds chirping melodious notes and specially the chakravaka birds which are clinging to their mates in great love are moving in pairs.The river has lovely sandy banks filled with swans and sarasa birds. The river appears as though a young woman decked all over is laughing.
kvacinnīlōtpalaiśchannā bhāti raktōtpalaiḥ kvacit.

kvacidābhāti śuklaiśca divyaiḥ kumudakuṭmalaiḥ4.27.22৷৷


kvacit at one place, nīlōtpalaiḥ with blue lotuses, kvacit at another place, raktōtpalaiḥ with red lotuses, channā covered, bhāti splendid looking, kvacit at some places, śuklaiśca with white lotuses, divyaiḥ wonderful, kumudakuṭmalaiḥ lotus buds, ābhāti appears.

'The river looks wonderful with lotuses now blue, now red and now white.
pāriplavaśatairjuṣṭā barhikrauñcavināditā.

ramaṇīyā nadī saumya! munisaṅghairniṣēvitā4.27.23৷৷


pāriplavaśataiḥ with hundreds of waterbirds, juṣṭā a favoured spot, barhikrauñcavināditā resounding with peacocks and krauncha birds, munisaṅghairniṣēvitā inhabited by many groups of sages, saumyā placid, nadī river, ramaṇīyā beautiful.

'This placid river water is haunted by waterbirds, peacocks and kraunchas, It is inhabited by groups of sages.
paśya candanavṛkṣāṇāṅ paṅktīssuracitā iva.

kakubhānāṅ ca dṛśyantē manasēvōditāssamam4.27.24৷৷


candanavṛkṣāṇām of sandalwood trees, suracitā iva as if arranged, paṅktī: in rows, paśya see, samam made uniform, manasā iva as if imaginatively, uditāḥ they have grown, kakubhānāṅ ca of the direction, dṛśyantē they are seen.

'See the uniform rows of sandalwood trees, it looks as though they are arranged together imaginatively.
ahō suramaṇīyō.yaṅ dēśaśśatruniṣūdana.

dṛḍhaṅ raṅsyāva saumitrē! sādhvatra nivasāvahai4.27.25৷৷


śatruniṣūdana O destroyer of enemies!, saumitrē Saumitri, ayam this, dēśaḥ place, suramaṇīyaḥ most enchanting, ahō Oh, atra here, sādhu well, nivasāvahai both will reside, dṛḍham surely, raṅsyāva we will sport in joy.

'O Saumitri destroyer of enemies! this place is most enchanting. Surely we will reside here sporting in joy .
itaśca nātidūrē sā kiṣkindhā citrakānanā.

sugrīvasya purī ramyā bhaviṣyati nṛpātmaja4.27.26৷৷


nṛpātmaja O prince, citrakānanā wonderful forest, ramyā delightful place, sugrīvasya purī Sugriva's city, sā kiṣkindhā Kishkinda, nātidūrē not far, ita: from here, bhaviṣyati is located.

'O prince ! Sugriva's delightful city of Kishkinda with wonderful forest around is not far from here.
gītavāditranirghōṣaśśrūyatē jayatāṅ vara.

nardatāṅ vānarāṇāṅ ca mṛdaṅgāḍambarai ssaha4.27.27৷৷


jayatāṅ vara great hero among the victorious!, gītavāditra nirghōṣaḥ sounds of vocal and musical instruments, nardatām making sounds, vānarāṇāṅ ca of monkeys, mṛdaṅgāḍambaraiḥ saha and beating of drums, śrūyatē is heard.

'O hero among the victorious, the sounds of vocal and instrumental music, the beating of drums and shrieking of monkeys are heard (from here).
labdhvā bhāryāṅ kapivaraḥ prāpya rājyaṅ suhṛdvṛtaḥ.

dhruvaṅ nandati sugrīvassamprāpya mahatīṅ śriyam4.27.28৷৷


kapivaraḥ monkey chief, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, bhāryām wife, labdhvā having obtained, rājyam kingdom, prāpya having attained, mahatīm very great, śriyam prosperity, samprāpya having earned, sahṛdvṛtaḥ surrounded by friends and relatives, nandati he is enjoying, dhruvam surely.

'Having obtained his wife, his kingdom and attained prosperity the monkey chief, Sugriva will be surely enjoying the company of friends and relatives'.
ityuktvā nyavasattatra rāghavassahalakṣmaṇaḥ.

bahudṛśyadarīkuñjē tasminprasravaṇē girau4.27.29৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, iti thus, uktvā having said so, bahudṛśyadarīkuñjē in a spot of many caverns and shrubs of vines, tasmin that, prasravaṇē girau Prasravana mountain, tatra there, sahalakṣmaṇa: along with Lakshmana, nyavasat he resided.

Having said so, Rama resided with Lakshmana on the Prasvarana mountain with many beautiful caverns and shrubs of vines.
susukhē.pi bahudravyē tasminhi dharaṇīdharē.

vasatastasya rāmasya ratiralpāpinā bhavēt4.27.30৷৷


susukhē in comfort, bahudravyē richly endowed, tasmin in that, dharaṇīdharē on that mountain, vasataḥ while residing, tasya rāmasya for that Rama's, alpāpi even a little, ratiḥ pleasure, nābhavat was not experienced.

Though Rama was residing in comfort on the mountain richly endowed with many pleasant things, he experienced little happiness.
hṛtāṅ hi bhāryāṅ smarataḥ prāṇēbhyō.pi garīyasīm.

udayābhyuditaṅ dṛṣṭvā śaśāṅkaṅ ca viśēṣataḥ4.27.31৷৷


viśēṣataḥ specially, udayā.bhyuditam rising, śaśāṅkam Moon, dṛṣṭvā seeing, hṛtām abducted, prāṇēbhyō.pi more than his life, garīyasī a very dear lady, bhāryām wife, smarataḥ remembering.

Specially with the rising Moon in the east, he remembered his abuducted wife who was dearer to him than his life.
āvivēśa na taṅ nidrā niśāsu śayanaṅ gatam.

tatsamutthēna śōkēna bāṣpōpahatacētasam4.27.32৷৷


tatsamutthēna rising, śōkēna by grief, bāṣpōpahatacētasam mind befogged with tears, niśāsu nights, śayanam while lying in bed, gatam gone, tam he, nidrā sleep, na āvivēśa did not take hold him, niśāsu during nights.

As Rama lay in bed, at night, his grief rose and choked him with tears.
taṅ śōcamānaṅ kākutsthaṅ nityaṅ śōkaparāyaṇam.

tulyaduḥkhō.bravīdbhrātā lakṣmaṇō.nunayanvacaḥ4.27.33৷৷


śōcamānam who was worried, nityam perpetually, śōkaparāyaṇam engrossed in sorrow, tam him, kākutstham Kakutstha (Rama), anunayan consoling, tulyaduḥkhaḥ an equally sad man, bhrātā brother, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, vacaḥ words, abravīt said.

Seeing Rama worried and engrossed in endless sorrow, his brother Lakshmana who was equally sad spoke these words of consolation:
alaṅ vīra! vyathāṅ gatvā na tvaṅ śōcitumarhasi.

śōcatō vyavasīdanti sarvārthā viditaṅ hi tē4.27.34৷৷


vīra O hero!, vyathām pain, gatvā alam stop it, tvam you, śōcitum to worry, na arhasi you do not deserve, śōcataḥ by grieving, sarvārthāḥ all objects, vyavasīdanti hi sink, tē to you, viditaṅ hi you are aware of this.

'O heroic one, you know one who broods fails to achieve his objective. So do not brood.
bhavānkriyāparō lōkē bhavān dēvaparāyaṇaḥ.

āstikō dharmaśīlaśca vyavasāyī ca rāghava4.27.35৷৷

na hyavyavasitaśśatruṅ rākṣasaṅ taṅ viśēṣataḥ.

samarthastvaṅ raṇē hantuṅ vikramairjihmakāriṇam4.27.36৷৷


avyavasitaḥ a man of no enterprise, tvam you, vikramaiḥ with valiant advances, jihmakāriṇam crooked, śatrum enemy, viśēṣataḥ specially, rākṣasam demon, tam him, raṇē in war, hantum to slay, samarthaḥ na hi will not have the capacity, bhavān you, lōkē in this world, kiyāpara a man of action, bhavān you, dēvaparāyaṇaḥ devoted to gods, āstika faithful , dharmaśīla:ca righteous also, vyavasāyī ca also enterprising,rāghava O Rama.

'O Rama! you are a man of action, enterprising. You are god-fearing, righteous and religious. You will not be able to kill a crooked enemy in a battle, especially a demon, with your valour if you make no endeavour.
samunmūlaya śōkaṅ tvaṅ vyavasāyaṅ sthiraṅ kuru.

tatassaparivāraṅ taṅ nirmūlaṅ kuru rākṣasam৷৷4.27.37৷৷


tvam you, śōkam sorrow, samunmūlaya may uproot, vyavasāyam daring, sthiraṅ kuru be firm in resolve, tataḥ then, saparivāram along with all relatives, taṅ nirmūlaṅ him destroy, kuru you do, rākṣasam that demon.

'Root out sorrow. Be daring. Be firm in resolve. (Only) then can you destroy the demon and his family.
pṛthivīmapi kākutstha! sasāgaravanācalām.

parivartayituṅ śaktaḥ kimaṅgapuna rāvaṇam4.27.38৷৷


kākutstha O Kakutstha, sasāgaravanācalām with oceans, forests and mountains, pṛthivīmapi the
entire earth, parivartayitum can turn, śaktaḥ able, rāvaṇam that Ravana, kiṅ punaḥ what more?

'O Kakutstha, you can turn the earth with its oceans, forests and mountains, what to speak of Ravana.
śaratkālaṅ pratīkṣasva prāvṛṭkālō.yamāgataḥ.

tatassarāṣṭraṅ sagaṇaṅ rāvaṇaṅ tvaṅ vadhiṣyasi4.27.39৷৷


ayam this, prāvṛṭkālaḥ rainy season, āgataḥ has set in, śaratkālam autumn, pratīkṣasva you may wait for, tataḥ then, sarāṣṭram along with his country, sagaṇam along with his troops, tvaṅ you, rāvaṇam Ravana, vadhiṣyasi will slay.

'This is the rainy season.Wait for autumn.Thereafter you will destroy Ravana along with his kingdom and clan.
ahaṅ tu khalu tē vīryaṅ prasuptaṅ pratibōdhayē.

dīpsairāhutibhiḥ kālē bhasmacchannamivānalam4.27.40৷৷


aham I am, kālē in proper time, dīpsaiḥ with smouldering fire, āhutibhiḥ with offerings, bhasmacchannam covered with ashes, analam iva like fire, tē your, prasuptam dormant, vīryam courage, pratibōdhayē khalu I am awakening.

'I am only awakening your dormant valour as one would kindle the fire covered with ashes by making offerings.'
lakṣmaṇasya tu tadvākyaṅ pratipūjya hitaṅ śubham.

rāghavassuhṛdaṅ snigdhamidaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷4.27.41৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, hitam good counsel, śubham auspicious, tat vākyam those words, pratipūjya respecting, suhṛdam warm hearted, snigdhaṅ loving, idaṅ vacanam these words, abravīt spoke.

On hearing the good counsel and auspicious words of Lakshmana, Rama spoke these loving and warm words:
vācyaṅ yadanuraktēna snigdhēna ca hitēna ca.

satyavikramayuktēna taduktaṅ lakṣmaṇa! tvayā4.27.42৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana!, anuraktēna by an affectionate man, snigdhēna by a friendly man, hitēna ca by a well-wisher, satyavikramayuktēna by a person endowed with true valour, yat such, vācyam words said, tat that, tvayā by you, uktam has been said.

'O Lakshmana! you have spoken the words of an affectionate and friendly counsellor of proven valour.
ēṣa śōkaḥ parityaktassarvakāryāvasādakaḥ.

vikramēṣvapratihataṅ tējaḥ prōtsāhayāmyaham৷৷4.27.43৷৷


sarvakāryāvasādakaḥ which can destroy all work, ēṣaḥthis, śōkaḥ sorrow, parityaktaḥ is given up, aham I, vikramēṣu during heroic exploits, apratihatam unaffected, tējaḥ vigour prōtsahayāmi I will resort to

'This sorrow which dampens one's daring spirit is given up. I shall now resort to such undaunted valour during my heroic exploits.
śaratkālaṅ pratīkṣiṣyē sthitō.smi vacanē tava.

sugrīvasya nadīnāṅ ca prasādamanupālayan4.27.44৷৷


sugrīvasya Sugriva's, nadīnāṅ ca and rivers, prasādam pleasure, anupālayan waiting for, śaratkālam for autumn, pratīkṣiṣyē I will wait, tava your, vacanē words, sthitaḥ asmi resolute.

'I will wait for autumn. I will stick to your advice while I wait until Sugriva and the rivers are pleased (with moderate flow of water.)
upakārēṇa vīrastu pratīkārēṇa yujyatē.

akṛtajñō.pratikṛtō hanti sattvavatāṅ manaḥ4.27.45৷৷


upakārēṇa with him, vīraḥ hero, pratīkārēṇa by helping in turn, yujyatē will not fail to do, akṛtajñaḥ ungrateful, apratikṛtaḥ one who does not return a favour, sattvavatām spirited people's, manaḥ heart, hanti destroys.

athaiva muktaḥpraṇidhāya lakṣmaṇaḥ

kṛtāñjalistatpratipūjya bhāṣitam.

uvāca rāmaṅ svabhirāmadarśanaṅ

pradarśayandarśanamātmanaśśubham4.27.46৷৷


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, atha thereupon, ēvam in this way ,ukta: told, praṇidhāya after reflecting thoughtfully, kṛtāñjaliḥ with folded palms in suplication, tat that, bhāṣitam words expresed, pratipūjya after honouring, ātmanaḥ his own, śubham auspicious, darśanam view, pradarśayan expressing, svabhirāmadarśanam him who is handsome, rāmam Rama, uvāca said.

Then Lakshmana reflected upon the words of Rama thoughtfully. He honoured his brother's words by receiving his advice with folded hands and spoke to his handsome brother giving out his own views:
yathōktamētattava sarvamīpsitaṅ

narēndra! kartā na cirāddharīśvaraḥ.

śaratpratīkṣaḥ kṣamatāmimaṅ bhavān

jalaprapātaṅ ripunigrahē dhṛtaḥ4.27.47৷৷


narēndra king!, yathā as, addharīśvara excellant king, nacirāt soon, tava your, īpsitam desire, ētat sarvam all this, kartā going to do, ripunigrahē to combat with the enemy, dhṛtaḥ be determined, bhavān thyself, śaratpratīkṣaḥ waiting for autumn, imam this, jalaprapātam waterflow, kṣamatām forgive.

'O lord of men, your desire will be fulfilled soon. Be determined to fight the enemy while waiting for autumn. Forgive this rainy season (and its water that obstructs).
niyamya kōpaṅ pratipālyatāṅ śarat

kṣamasva māsāṅ ścaturō mayā saha.

vasācalē.sminmṛgarājasēvitē

saṅvardhayan śatruvadhē samudyamam4.27.48৷৷


śatruvadhē in slaying of enemies, samudyamam effort, kṣamasva you may pardon, kōpam anger, niyamya controlling, śarat autumn, pratipālyatām you may wait for, caturaḥ four, māsān months, saṅvartayan carrying out, mṛgarājasēvitē inhabited by lions, asmin acalē on this mountain, mayā saha along with me, vasa stay.

'Control your anger and wait for autumn. Pardon these (intervening) four months (which put a halt on your war-effort). Stay with me on this mountain infested with lions. Brace up to kill the enemy.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē saptaviṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentyseventh sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
