[Hanuman awakens Sugriva from slumber --- advises to initiate the search Vaidehi.]

samīkṣya vimalaṅ vyōma gatavidyudvalāhakam.

sārasākulasaṅghuṣṭaṅ ramyajyōtsnānulēpanam4.29.1৷৷

samṛddhārthaṅ ca sugrīvaṅ mandadharmārthasaṅgraham.

atyarthamasatāṅ mārgamēkāntagatamānasam4.29.2৷৷

nirvṛttakāryaṅ siddhārthaṅ pramadābhirataṅ sadā.

prāptavantamabhiprētānsarvānēva manōrathān4.29.3৷৷

svāṅ ca patnīmabhiprētāṅ tārāṅ cāpi samīpsitām.

viharantamahōrātraṅ kṛtārthaṅ vigatajvaram4.29.4৷৷

krīḍantamiva dēvēśaṅ nandanē.psarasāṅ gaṇaiḥ.

mantriṣu nyastakāryaṅ ca mantriṇāmanavēkṣakam4.29.5৷৷

utsannarājyasandēśaṅ kāmavṛttamavasthitam.

niścitārthō.rthatattvajñaḥ kāladharmaviśēṣavit4.29.6৷৷

prasādya vākyairmadhurairhētumadbhirmanōramaiḥ.

vākyavidvākya tattvajñaṅ harīśaṅ mārutātmajaḥ4.29.7৷৷

hitaṅ tattvaṅ ca pathyaṅ ca sāmadharmārthanītimat.

praṇayaprītisaṅyuktaṅ viśvāsakṛtaniścayam.

harīśvaramupāgamya hanūmānvākyamabravīt4.29.8৷৷


vimalaṅ clear, gatavidyudvalāhakam free from clouds and lightning, sārasākulasaṅghuṣṭam cackling of herons, ramyajyōtsnānulēpanam lovely moonlight, vyōma sky, samṛddhārtham rich, mandadharmārthasaṅgraham slow in attaining dharma and artha, atyartham excessively, asatām bad persons, mārgam path, ēkāntagatamānasam engaged in fulfilling desires only, nirvṛttakāryam satisfied with his work, siddhārtham accomplished, sadā all the time, pramadābhiratam engrossed in enjoyment of women, abhiprētām coveted, svāṅ patnīm his own wife, sarvān ēva all, manōrathān desires, samīpsitām desired, tārāṅ cāpi Tara also, prāptavantam having obtained, ahōrātram day and night, viharantam strolling, kṛtārtham accomplished, vigatajvaram without worry, nandanē apsarasām with Apsaras in Nandana garden, gaṇaiḥ groups, krīḍantam sporting, dēvēśam iva like god Indra, mantriṣu to the ministers, nyastakāryaṅ ca entrusting duty, mantriṇām of the ministers, anavēkṣakam not watchful, utsannarājyasandēśam without minding the duties of the kingdom, kāmavṛttam iva as if engrossed in sensual pleasures, (ava) sthitam remaining, harīśam monkey king, sugrīvaṅ ca Sugriva, samīkṣya seen, niścitārthaḥ knower of responsibilities, arthatattvajñaḥ knower of principles, kāladharmaviśēṣavit aware of duties to be performed at right time, vākyavit skilful in expression, madhura: sweet, mārutātmajaḥ son of the wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, vākyatattvajñam good at speech, harīśvaram Sugriva, upāgamya went to, madhurai: with sweet, hētumadbhiḥ reasonable, manōramaiḥ pleasing, vākyaiḥ words, prasādya making happy, hitam well-meaning, tattvam truth, pathyam ca helpful, sāmadharmārthanītimat conciliatory, righteous, just and truthful words, praṇayaprītisaṅyuktam full of affection, viśvāsakṛtaniścayam having decided to take him into confidence, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, saw the clear sky flooded with lovely moonlight, free from clouds and lightning and cackling of herons. He noticed that because Sugriva had attained abundant wealth and merit, he was not taking care of the kingdom. He was engrossed in sensual pleasures. Having accomplished the desired object, he was engaged in enjoyment of the company of women, his own wives and Tara, whom he coveted. He was strolling (in the pleasant garden) night and day without caring for the kingdom, entrusting it to the ministers whose movements he did not watch. He was sporting with women like Indra sports with apsaras in the Nandana garden.Hanuman, who was conscious of his duties and responsibilities, who was aware of the importance of action in time and who was skilful in speech approached Sugriva, king of the monkeys. Having decided to take him into confidence, Hanuman spoke in a convincing, well-meaning, sweet, pleasing manner words truthful and helpful, conciliatory and just, full of love and affection:
rājyaṅ prāptaṅ yaśaścaiva kaulī śrīrabhivardhitā.

mitrāṇāṅ saṅgrahaśśēṣastaṅ bhavānkartumarhati4.29.9৷৷


rājyam kingdom, yaśaścaiva and fame, prāptam attained, kaulī of the family, śrīḥ prosperity, abhivardhitā heightened, mitrāṇām of friends, saṅgrahaḥ earning good will, śēṣaḥ remains, tam that( duty), bhavān by you, kartum to do, arhati is proper

'You have attained the kingdom. You have earned fame. The prosperity of your family has gone up. All that remains is to earn the goodwill of friends. Attend to that now.
yō hi mitrēṣu kālajñassatataṅ sādhu vartatē4.29.10৷৷

tasya rājyaṅ ca kīrtiśca pratāpaścābhi vardhatē.


yō hi he who, kālajñaḥ knows the value of time, satatam always, mitrēṣu towards friends, sādhu well, vartatē conducts, tasya his, rājyaṅ ca kingdom and, kīrtiśca fame, pratāpaśca glory, vardhatē will increase.

'The kingdom, glory and fame of a king who knows the value of time and conducts himself well towards his allies always grows.
yasya kōśaśca daṇḍaśca mitrāṇyātmā ca bhūmipa!4.29.11৷৷

samavētāni sarvāṇi sa rājyaṅ mahadaśnutē.


bhūmipa! O king, yasya he who, kōśaśca treasury, daṇḍaśca and sceptre, mitrāṇi allies, ātmā ca and his own self, samavētāni are equally dear sarvāṇi all, saḥ he, mahat great, rājyam kingdom, aśnutē will get.

'He to whom the treasury, sceptre, allies and his own self- all these are equally dear, enjoys a large kingdom.
tadbhavānvṛttasampannaḥ sthitaḥ pathi niratyayē4.29.12৷৷

mitrārthamabhinītārthaṅ yathāvatkartumarhati.


tat therefore, vṛttasampannaḥ endowed with right conduct, bhavān you, niratyayē devoted, sthitaḥ conforming to, abhinītārtham a proper course of action, mitrārtham for the cause of ally yathāvat duly, kartum doing, arhati it is proper.

'Endowed with right conduct, you ought to duly answer the cause of your ally conforming to proper course of action.
santyajya sarvakarmāṇi mitrārthē yō.nuvartatē4.29.13৷৷

sambhramāddhi kṛtōtsāhassō.narthairnāvarudhyatē.


yaḥ whoever, sarvakarmāṇi all his deeds, santyajya by giving up, sambhramāt with excitement, kṛtōtsāhaḥ with enthusiasm, mitrārthē for the sake of ally, anuvartatē does follow, saḥ to him, anarthaiḥ harms, na avarudhyatē not obstructed.

'Whoever sets aside his personal interest and works for the welfare of his ally with due enthusiasm and excitement will not be harmed.
yastu kālavyatītēṣu mitrakāryēṣu vartatē4.29.14৷৷

sa kṛtvā mahatō.pyarthānna mitrārthēna yujyatē.


yaḥ he who, kālavyatītēṣu exceedng the time limit, mitrakāryēṣu in his friend's task, vartatē acts, saḥ he, mahataḥ great, arthān effort, kṛtvā does, mitrārthēna for the cause of friend, na yujyatē not succeed.

'He who exceeds the time limit in accomplishing a friend's task, and puts forth great effort later succeeds not.
yadidaṅ mitrakāryaṅ vīra nōmitrakāryamarindama! 4.29.15৷৷

kriyatāṅ rāghavasyaitadvaidēhyāḥ parimārgaṇam.

tadidaṅ vīra! kāryaṅ tē kālātītamarindama! 4.29.16৷৷


arindama O subduer of enemies, naḥ for us, tat that, idam this, vīrakāryam heroic deed, mitrakāryam for the sake of friend, vaidēhyaḥ Vaidehi's, parimārgaṇam search, rāghavasya Rama's, ētat this, kriyatām may be done, arindama O crusher of enemies, vīra hero, tat that, idam this, kāryam task, tē to you, kālātītam already delayed.

'O subduer of enemies! we should do the brave deed of finding Vaidehi for the sake of your friend. O crusher of enemies! this is your duty at present and it is already delayed.
na ca kālamatītaṅ tē nivēdayati kālavit.

tvaramāṇō.pi sanprājñastava rājanvaśānugaḥ4.29.17৷৷


rājan O king!, prājñaḥ a wise person, kālavit one who is aware of the importance of timely action, saḥ he, tvaramāṇō.pi even if he is in a hurry, tava your, vaśānugaḥ staying( in your kingdom), atītam exceeding, kālam time, tē to you, na nivēdayati will not report.

'O king! a wise man (like Rama) who is aware of timely action would not tell you even if it is unduly delayed, even when he is in a hurry to get the work done, since he is staying in your kingdom (since he is dependant on you).
kulasya hētuḥ sphītasya dīrghabandhuśca rāghavaḥ.

apramēyaprabhāvaśca svayaṅ cāpratimō guṇaiḥ4.29.18৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, sphītasya prosperity, kulasya of your family, hētuḥ responsible, dīrghabandhuśca a long time ally, svayam yourself, apramēyaprabhāvaśca a man of immeasurable power, guṇaiḥ in virtues, apratimaḥ peerless.

'Rama is responsible in lending stability to you and to your well-known family. He will continue to be your ally for a long time. Let it be known that his power is boundless and his virtues peerless.
tasya tvaṅ kuru vai kāryaṅ pūrvaṅ tēna kṛtaṅ tava.

harīśvara! kapiśrēṣṭhānājñāpayitumarhasi4.29.19৷৷


harīśvara O king of monkeys, pūrvam earlier, tēna by him, tava to you, kṛtam done, tvam you, tasya his, kāryam task, kuru vai you may do, kapiśrēṣṭhān ājñāpayitum to order the best of monkeys, arhasi it will be proper for you.

'O king! pray accomplish his object the same way he has accomplished your own. You ought to issue orders to the foremost of the monkeys.
na hi tāvadbhavētkālō vyatītaścōdanādṛtē.

cōditasya hi kāryasya bhavētkālavyatikramaḥ4.29.20৷৷


cōdanādṛtē before prompting, kālaḥ time, vyatītaḥ elapsed na tāvat bhavēt cannot be used, cōditasya if he directs, kāryasya the task, kālavyatikramaḥ time limit has elapsed, bhavēt will happen.

'Time will not be deemed lapsed in vain if the work is sincerely taken up without delay and without pressure from your ally, Rama. If it is undertaken under pressure, it will be considered transgression of time.
akarturapi kāryasya bhavānkartā harīśvara!

kiṅ punaḥ pratikartustē rājyēna ca dhanēna ca4.29.21৷৷


harīśvara O lord of monkeys, kāryasya of the task, akarturapi even if one has not done the task, bhavān you, kartā doer, dhanēna ca wealth and, rājyēna ca also kingdom, tē to you, pratikartu: who performs the task in return, kiṅ punaḥ what to say again?

'O lord of monkeys! help even a person who has not helped you. As such, do you need to be told that you should help one, with whose help you have earned wealth and kingdom?
śaktimānapivikrāntō vānararkṣagaṇēśvara!.

kartuṅ dāśarathēḥ prītimājñāyāṅ kinna sajjasē4.29.22৷৷


vānararkṣagaṇēśvara! O protector of the monkey force, śaktimān powerful, vikrāntaḥ advancing forward, dāśarathēḥ Dasaratha's Rama, prītim pleasure, kartum to do, ajñāyām in issuing orders, kiṅ na sajjasē why do you not get ready?

'O protector of the monkeys, you are powerful and you are prompt. Why don't you issue orders which will please Rama?
kāmaṅ khalu śaraiśśaktassurāsuramahōragān.

vaśē dāśarathiḥ kartuṅ tvatpratijñāṅ hi kāṅkṣatē4.29.23৷৷


dāśarathiḥ Rama, śaraiḥ with arrows, surāsuramahōragān gods or demons and nagas, vaśē under control, kartum to do, kāmam indeed, śaktaḥ khalu he has the capacity, tvat pratijñām your swearing, hi indeed, kāṅkṣatē he is looking for.

'Indeed, Rama is fully capable of subduing gods, demons as well as nagas with his arrows. He is looking for your help in view of your promise.
prāṇatyāgāviśaṅkēna kṛtaṅ tēna tavapriyam.

tasya mārgāma vaidēhīṅ pṛthivyāmapi cāmbarē4.29.24৷৷


prāṇatyāgāviśaṅkēna risking his life without hesitation, tēna by him, tava your, priyam dear, kṛtam work, tasya his, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, pṛthivyām on earth, ambarē.pi ca or in heaven, mārgāma let us search.

'He has done you a deed dear to you without hesitation, risking his own life.Let us help him in search of his Vaidehi whether she is on earth or in heaven.
dēvadānava gandharvā nasurāssamarudgaṇāḥ.

na ca yakṣā bhayaṅ tasya kuryuḥ kimuta rākṣasāḥ4.29.25৷৷


dēvadānava gandharvā gods, demons or gandharvas, na marudgaṇāḥ or marutas, asurāḥ deities, yakṣāḥ ca and yakshas, tasya for him, bhayam fright, na kuryuḥ not cause, rākṣasāḥ demons, kimuta what to say of.

'Not gods, demons, gandharvas or even marutas, suras or yakshas can cause fright in him much less the rakshasas.
tadēvaṅ śaktiyuktasya pūrvaṅ priyakṛtastava.

rāmasyārhasi piṅgēśa! kartuṅ sarvātmanā priyam4.29.26৷৷


piṅgēśa! O king of monekys! tat that, ēvaṅ śaktiyuktasya exerting all your strength, pūrvam earlier, tava your, priyakṛtaḥ done the work desired by you, rāmasya Rama's, sarvātmanā wholeheartedly, priyam dear, kartum to do, arhasi will be proper.

'Therefore, O king of monkeys! you ought to oblige Rama wholeheartedly exerting all your strength, as he has done your work.
nādhastādavanau nāpsu gatirnōpari cāmbarē.

kasyacitsajjatē.smākaṅ kapīśvara! tavājñayā4.29.27৷৷


kapīśvara O lord of monkeys, tava your, ājñayā by orders, asmākam for us, kasyacit of any place, adhastāt underground, sajjatē made possible, avanau on the earth, apsu in water, na or, upari up , ambarē ca and in the sky, na or else.

'O lord of monkeys! commanded by you, each one of us or all of us together can ransack the underworld, the earth, or water or heaven.
tadājñāpaya kaḥ kiṅ tē kutō vāpi vyavasyatu.

harayō.hyapradhṛṣyāstē santi kōṭyagratō.nagha4.29.28৷৷


anagha sinless hero, tat therefore, ājñāpaya you order, kaḥ who, kiṅ what, kuta:from where, vyavasyatu determine to act, tē your, kōṭyagrataḥ more than a crore, apradhṛṣyāḥ invincible, harayaḥ vanaras, santi hi at your service.

O sinless hero! therefore issue your command. There are more than a crore of invincible monkeys. Determine now who should do and what and in which place. We are at your service'.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā kālē sādhu nivēdanam.

sugrīvassattvasampannaścakāra matimuttamām4.29.29৷৷


tasya his, kālē at proper time, sādhu honest, nivēdanam advice, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā on hearing, sattvasampannaḥ one who has great sense of duty, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, uttamām best, matim mind, cakāra set on.

Sugriva who had a great sense of duty, started applying his mind, when he heard the honest advice of Hanuman.
sa sandidēśābhimataṅ nīlaṅ nityakṛtōdyamam.

dikṣu sarvāsu sarvēṣāṅ sainyānāmupasaṅgrahē4.29.30৷৷


abhimatam his favourite one, sarvāsu in all, dikṣu in directions, sarvēṣām of all vanaras, sainyānām army cadres, upasaṅgrahē to gether, nityakṛtōdyamam ever diligent, nīlam Nila, sandidēśa sent

He sent word to the ever diligent Nila, his favourite, to collect all cadres of army of the monkeys from all directions.
yathā sēnā samagrā mē yūthapālāśca sarvaśaḥ.

samāgacchantyasaṅgēna sēnāgrāṇi tathā kuru4.29.31৷৷


mē my, samagrā all, sēnā army, yūthapālāśca group leaders, sarvaśaḥ all over, asaṅgēna independently, yathā as, sēnāgrāṇi O hero of the army, samāgacchanti will be assemble, tathā like
that, kuru you may act.

'Let the entire army with leaders of different groups assemble here seperately. O chief of army! act accordingly.
yē tvantapālāḥ plavagāśśīghragā vyavasāyinaḥ.

samānayantu tē sainyaṅ tvaritāśśāsanānmama4.29.32৷৷

svayaṅ cānantaraṅ sainyaṅ bhavānēvānupaśyatu.


antapālāḥ chiefs, sainyaṅ army, śīghragāḥ swift-footed, vyavasāyinaḥ guardians of frontiers, yē plavagāḥ monkeys, tē they, mama my, śāsanān orders, tvaritāḥ quickly, sainyaṅ army, samānayantu may get here, anantaraṅ kāryam the task to be done later, bhavān you, ēva only, svayam personally, anupaśyatu supervise.

'Let the swift-footed monkeys, guardians of frontiers, army chiefs muster soon in obedience to my command. You (Nila) alone should personally supervise the work to be done next.
tripañcarātrādūrdhvaṅ yaḥ prāpnuyānnēha vānaraḥ.

tasya prāṇāntikō daṇḍō nātra kāryā vicāraṇā4.29.33৷৷


yaḥ vānaraḥ such vanara, tripañcarātrāt after three or five nights, ūrdhvam over and above, iha here, prāpnuyāt may reach, tasya his, prāṇāntikaḥ death sentence, daṇḍaḥ punishment, atra here, vicāraṇāḥ thought, na kāryā no doubt

harīṅśca vṛddhānupayātu sāṅgadō

bhavānmamājñāmadhikṛtya niścitām.

iti vyavasthāṅ haripuṅgavēśvarō

vidhāya vēśma pravivēśa vīryavān4.29.34৷৷


sāṅgadaḥ along with Angada, bhavān you, mama my, ājñāmra orders, adhikṛtya concerning, niścitām decidedly, vṛddhān elderly, harīn monkeys, upayātu approach, vīryavān valiant, haripuṅgavēśvaraḥ lord of monkeys, iti thus, vyavasthām arrangement, vidhāya by making, vēśma his residence, pravivēśa entered.

'In strict obedience to my orders, go with Angada to the elderly monkeys and inform them about my decision and order'. After making this arrangement valiant Sugriva entered his residence.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē ēkōnatriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentyninth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
