[Rama's agony accentuated by autumn --- description of the beauty of autumn --- Lakshmana leaves for Sugriva.]

guhaṅ praviṣṭē sugrīvē vimuktē gaganē ghanaiḥ.

varṣarātrōṣitō rāmaḥ kāmaśōkābhipīḍitaḥ4.30.1৷৷

pāṇḍuraṅ gaganaṅ dṛṣṭvā vimalaṅ candramaṇḍalam.

śāradīṅ rajanīṅ caiva dṛṣṭvā jyōtsnānulēpanām4.30.2৷৷

kāmavṛttaṅ ca sugrīvaṅ naṣṭāṅ ca janakātmajām.

buddhvā kālamatītaṅ ca mumōha paramāturaḥ4.30.3৷৷


sugrīvē (when) Sugriva, guham residence, praviṣṭē entered, gaganē into the sky, ghanaiḥ heavy clouds, vimuktē is cleared, varṣarātrē rainy night, kāmaśōkābhipīḍitaḥ agonised out of love, rāmaḥ Rama, pāṇḍuram pale white, gaganam sky, vimalam clear, candramaṇḍalam orb of the Moon, dṛṣṭvā seeing, jyōtsnānulēpanām covered with bright moonlight, śāradīm of autumn, rajanīṅ caiva night like, buddhvā known, kāmavṛttam engaged in love, sugrīvam Sugriva, naṣṭām lost, janakātmajāṅ ca Janaka's daughter, atītam exceeded, kālam time, dṛṣṭvā seeing, paramāturaḥ perturbed, mumōha ca swooned.

While Sugriva was in his residence, Rama was (in Prasravana mountain) spending his rainy nights tormented by passion (for Sita). Sugriva was engaged in love, forgetting the time fixed for taking up the search for Sita. When the sky became clear of clouds after the rainy season, Rama sat gazing at the clear autumnal Moon's orb. He was besmeared with moon-light and felt perturbed as time was running out. And then fell into a swoon. (only a few months remained for the completion of the exile and Bharata will put an end to himself if Rama does not return to Ayodhya on the stipulated day. This worried Rama.)
sa tu saṅjñāmupāgamya muhūrtānmatimānpunaḥ.

manassthāmapi vaidēhīṅ cintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ4.30.4৷৷


matimān sensible man, puna: again, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, muhūrtāt in a short time, saṅjñām consciousness, upāgamya having regained, manaḥsthāmapi present in his mind, vaidēhīm of Vaidehi, cintayāmāsa thinking of.

Gaining back the senses after a while, wise Rama started thinking about Vaidehi, who remained in his heart.
āsīnaḥ parvatasyāgrē hēmadhātuvibhūṣitē.

śāradaṅ gaganaṅ dṛṣṭvā jagāma manasā priyām4.30.5৷৷


parvatasya mountain's, hēmadhātuvibhūṣitē adorned with gold and minerals, agrē on top, āsīnaḥ seated, śāradam autumnal, gaganam sky, dṛṣṭvā on glancing, manasā in his mind, priyām of the beloved, jagāma went on thinking.

Sitting on top of the mountain shining with gold and minerals, Rama gazed at the pleasant autumnal sky and started thinking of his beloved.
dṛṣṭvā ca vimalaṅ vyōma gatavidyudvalāhakam.

sārasārāvasaṅghuṣṭhaṅ vilalāpārtayā girā4.30.6৷৷


vyōmaṅ sky, gatavidyudvalāhakam rid of clouds and lightning, sārasāravasaṅghuṣṭam filled with the cackle of flocks of Sarasa cranes, vimalam clear, dṛṣṭvā ca on glancing, ārtayā in a pitiable, girā tone, vilalāpa cried.

Looking at the sky rid of clouds and lightning, filled with the sounds of flocks of sarasa birds, Rama cried in a pitiable state.
sārasārāvasannādaissārasāravanādinī.

yā৷৷śramē ramatē bālā sā.dya mē ramatē katham4.30.7৷৷


sārāsārāvanādinī (lady whose voice) resembles that of sarasa birds, yā bālā that young lady, āśramē in the hermitage, sārāsārāvasannādaiḥ with sweet sounds of sarasa birds, ramatē enjoying, sā she, adya now, katham how, ramatē revelling?

'How will the young lady (Sita) whose voice is like the sarasa bird's, who was revelling, listening to its sweet cackle at the hermitage be living now?
puṣpitāṅścāsanān dṛṣṭvā kāñcanāniva nirmalān.

kathaṅ sā ramatē bālā paśyantī māmapaśyatī4.30.8৷৷


puṣpitān blossomed, kāñcanāniva like gold, nirmalān pure, asanān asana flowers, dṛṣṭvā seeing, paśyantī while seeing, mām me, apaśyatī not seeing, sā bālā that young lady, katham how, ramatē will she feel?

'How will my beloved wife feel on seeing the asana flowers which are as pure as gold, when she does not find me anywhere?
yā purā kalahaṅsānāṅ svarēṇa kalabhāṣiṇī.

budhyatē cārusarvāṅgī sā.dya mē buddhyatē katham4.30.9৷৷


cārusarvāṅgī a lady with beautiful limbs, kalabhāṣiṇī sweet-tongued, yā she, purā earlier, kalahaṅsānām of the swans, svarēṇa by the sound, budhyatē is awakened, mē my, sā she, adya now, katham how, buddhyatē is awakened.

'How will my Sita with her charming limbs and sweet words, who used to get up from sleep by the cackle of swans, wake up now?
nisvanaṅ cakravākānāṅ niśamya nahacāriṇām.

puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣī kathamēṣā bhaviṣyati4.30.10৷৷


puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣī lady with large, pale white eyes, ēṣā such, sahacāriṇām of her
companions, cakravākānām of Chakravaka birds, nisvanam sweet voices, niśamya listening, katham how, bhaviṣyati will she be.

'How will that lady with large, pale white eyes sustain her life now, since she is used to listening to the sweet notes of chakravaka birds, who were her companions?
sarāṅsi saritō vāpīḥ kānanāni vanāni ca.

tāṅ vinā mṛgaśābākṣīṅ carannādya sukhaṅ labhē4.30.11৷৷


sarāṅsi lakes, saritaḥ rivers, vāpīḥ wells, kānanāni forests, vanāni ca and groves, caran wandering, adya now, tām mṛgaśābākṣīṅ that fawn-eyed lady, vinā without, sukham pleasure, na labhē not happy.

'Even though I am wandering by lakes, rivers, wells, forests and groves,I am not happy without that fawn-eyed lady.
api tāṅ madviyōgāccha saukumāryācca bhāminīm.

sudūraṅ pīḍayētkāmaśśaradguṇanirantaraḥ4.30.12৷৷


śaradguṇanirantaraḥ charm of autumn, kāmaḥ Cupid, saukumāryāt of delicate body, madviyōgācca due to separation, tām from me, bhāminīm lovely lady, sudūram very far, pīḍayēt api tormented.

'I think even the charm of autumn must be always tormenting that lovely lady, as she is very far from me. She is too delicate to suffer the agony of separation.'
ēvamādi naraśrēṣṭhō vilalāpa nṛpātmajaḥ.

vihaṅga iva sāraṅgassalilaṅ tridaśēśvarāt4.30.13৷৷


naraśrēṣṭha: best of men, nṛpātmajaḥ prince, tridaśēśvarāt from lord of the gods, salilam water, sāraṅgaḥ Saranga, vihaṅga iva like bird, ēvamādi in the same way, vilalāpa he lamented.

Thus the best among the princes wailed just as chakrabaka laments for water from
Indra, lord of the gods.
tataścañcūrya ramyēṣu phalārthī girisānuṣu.

dadarśa paryupāvṛttō lakṣmīvānlakṣmaṇō.grajam4.30.14৷৷


tataḥ then, phalārthī for getting fruits, ramyēṣu from the beautiful, girisānuṣu the mountain slopes, cañcūrya went about looking, paryupāvṛttaḥ going round and round, lakṣmīvān graceful man, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, agrajam elder brother, dadarśa saw.

Graceful Lakshmana returned after going round and round the beautiful mountain slopes for fruits and saw his brother.
taṅ cintayā dussahayā parītaṅ

visaṅjñamēkaṅ vijanē manasvī.

bhrāturviṣādātparitāpadīnaḥ

samīkṣya saumitriruvāca rāmam4.30.15৷৷


manasvī venerable, taṅ him, saumitriḥ Saumithri, dussahayā with the unbearable, cintayā with sorrow, parītam extreme agony, visaṅjñam lost senses, ēkaṅ alone, samīkṣya observing, bhrātuḥ brother's, viṣādāt with grief, paritāpadīnaḥ pathetic and dejected, (tvaritaḥ at once) rāmam to Rama, uvāca spoke.

Observing Rama who had lost his senses, lying alone in unbearable agony, venerable Lakshmana became sad and miserable and spoke to his brother:
kimārya kāmasya vaśaṅgatēna

kimātmapauruṣyaparābhavēna.

ayaṅ sadā saṅhriyatē samādhiḥ

kimatra yōgēna nivartitēna4.30.16৷৷


ārya O revered (brother), kāmasya vaśaṅgatēna succumbed to passion, kim why, ātmapauruṣya self-confidence, parābhavēna defeat, kim of what use, sadā ever, ayam this, samādhiḥ composure, saṅhiyatē is withdrawn, atra nivartitēna desisting from, yōgēna from yoga, kim why?

'O revered brother! why do you succumb to passion and loss of self-confidence? Why is the usual composure of your mind withdrawn? Why do you desist from yaga?
kriyābhiyōgaṅ manasaḥ prasādaṅ

samādhiyōgānugataṅ ca kālam.

sahāyasāmarthyamadīnasattvaḥ

svakarma hētuṅ ca kuruṣva hētum4.30.17৷৷


adīnasattva: an undaunted warrior, kriyābhiyōgam make efforts to work, manasaḥ mind's, prasādam serenity, samādhiyōgānugatam followed by contemplative mood, kālaṅ ca taking advantage of time, sahāyasāmarthyam strength of effort, hētum cause, svakarma ca by your own effort, hētum cause of success, kuruṣva achieve.

'You are an undaunted warrior. Take to the path of action. Resort to samadhiyoga or meditation and regain the serenity of mind. Make the strength of your effort the source of your success.
na jānakī mānava vaṅśanātha!

tvayā sanāthā sulabhā parēṇa.

na cāgnicūḍāṅ jvalitāmupētya

na dahyatē vīra varārha! kacchit4.30.18৷৷


mānavavaṅśanātha O lord of the human race, tvayā by you, sanāthā protected , jānakī Janaki, parēṇa by any one, sulabhā easy to obtain, na not, vīra hero, varārha best, jvalitām blazing, agnicūḍām burning fire, upētya after reaching, kacchit any one, na dahyatē (iti) na is not burnt.

'O lord of the human race! O worthy hero! when you are the protector, Janaki cannot be retained by any one easily just as burning fire after it reaches its full height cannot be retained by any one.'
salakṣaṇaṅ lakṣmaṇamapradhṛṣyaṅ

svabhāvajaṅ vākyamuvāca rāmaḥ.

hitaṅ ca pathyaṅ ca nayaprasaktaṅ

sasāma dharmārthasamāhitaṅ ca4.30.19৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, salakṣaṇam a man of good signs, apradhṛṣyam an unassailable warrior, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, svabhāvajam natural, hitam beneficial, pathyaṅ ca and useful, nayaprasaktam sanctioned by, sasāma conciliatory, dharmārthasamāhitaṅ ca in accordance with dharma and artha, vākyam these words, uvāca spoke.

Rama said to Lakshmana, an unassailable warrior with auspicious signs, that what he had spoken was natural, beneficial, wise and useful.It is in accordance with Sama Veda and the science of state-craft, well established in dharma and artha.
nissaṅśayaṅ kāryamavēkṣitavyaṅ

kriyāviśēṣō.hyanuvartitavyaḥ.

nanu pravṛttasya durāsadasya

kumāra! kāryasya phalaṅ ca cintyam4.30.20৷৷


kumāra dear!, nissaṅśayam no doubt, kāryam the work, avēkṣitavyam should be considered, kriyāviśēṣō.hi and requires special attention, anuvartitavyaḥ should be followed, pravṛttasya (of
the work) to be commenced, durāsadasya of the unassailable, kāryasya of action, phalaṅ ca fruit also, cintyaṅ nanu surely need to think.

'My dear, there is no doubt that I have to consider the work (ahead), give special attention to follow up. Surely I need to think over this herculian task and its achievement'.
atha padmapalāśākṣīṅ maithilīmanucintayan.

uvāca lakṣmaṇaṅ rāmō mukhēna pariśuṣyatā4.30.21৷৷


atha then, rāmaḥ Rama, padmapalāśākṣīm lady with eyes like lotus petals, maithilīm Mythili, anucintayan while worrying, pariśuṣyatā with dried up, mukhēna with mouth, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, uvāca said

Then falling back on the memory of Maithili, the lady with eyes like lotus petals, he said to Lakshmana with parched lips:
tarpayitvā sahasrākṣassalilēna vasundharām.

nirvartayitvā sasyāni kṛtakarmā vyavasthitaḥ4.30.22৷৷


sahasrākṣaḥ thousand-eyed Indra, salilēna with water, vasundharām the earth, tarpayitvā having satisfied, sasyāni crops, nirvartayitvā brought back, kṛtakarmā done his duty, vyavasthitaḥ settled down.

'Having satisfied the earth with abundant rain water and having fulfilled the task of ripening the crops, the thousand-eyed Indra has done his duty, has settled down now.
snigdhagambhīranirghōṣāśśailadrumapurōgamāḥ.

visṛjya salilaṅ mēghāḥ pariśrāntā nṛpātmaja!4.30.23৷৷


nṛpātmaja! prince, snigdhagambhīranirghōṣāḥ with pleasing deep sound, śailadrumapurōgamāḥ wandering over trees on the mountains, mēghāḥ clouds, salilam waters, visṛjya having showered,
pariśrāntāḥ exhausted.

'O prince! having discharged their water the clouds (after the rains) are exhausted. They are moving now over trees and mountains, making deep and pleasant sounds.
nīlōtpaladalaśyāmāśśyāmīkṛtvā diśō daśa.

vimadā iva mātaṅgāśśāntavēgāḥ payōdharāḥ4.30.24৷৷


nīlōtpaladalaśyāmā dark like the petals of blue lotuses, payōdharāḥ rain-bearing clouds, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, śyāmīkṛtvā having filled with darkness, vimadāḥ devoid of intoxication, mātaṅgāḥ iva like elephants, śāntavēgāḥ became quiet.

'The clouds, which were dark till now like the blue lotus petals darkening all the ten directions are like elephants free from all intoxication as their fury is abated৷৷
jalagarbhā mahāmēghā kuṭajārjunagandhinaḥ.

caritvā viratāssaumya! vṛṣṭivātāssamudyatāḥ4.30.25৷৷


saumya O dear, jalagarbhāḥ laden with water, mahāmēghāḥ huge clouds, kuṭajārjunagandhinaḥ the fragrance of kutaja and arjuna flowers, samudyatāḥ are blowing, vṛṣṭivātāḥ winds carrying rain-water, caritvā having moved, viratāḥ stopped.

'O dear! the moist winds have ceased to blow as before and are carrying the fragrance of kutaja and arjuna flowers.
ghanānāṅ vāraṇānāṅ ca mayūrāṇāṅ ca lakṣmaṇa!.

nādaḥ prasravaṇānāṅ ca praśāntassahasā.nagha4.30.26৷৷


anagha O sinless one, lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, ghanānām of heavy clouds, vāraṇānāṅ ca and of elephants, mayūrāṇāṅ ca and peacocks, prasravaṇānāṅ ca and of waterfalls, nādaḥ sound, sahasā suddenly, praśāntaḥ stopped.

'O sinless Lakshmana! the rumblings of heavy clouds, the trumpeting of elephants, the cry of peacocks and the sound of waterfalls have become suddenly stilled.
abhivṛṣṭā mahāmēghairnirmalāścitrasānavaḥ.

anuliptā ivā.bhānti girayaścitradīptibhiḥ4.30.27৷৷


mahāmēghaiḥ with huge clouds, abhivṛṣṭāḥ having showered rain, nirmalāḥ clean, citrasānavaḥ peaks of different colours, girayaḥ mountains, citradīptibhiḥ glowing in variegated colours, anuliptāḥ iva as if smeared , ābhānti appear.

'The mountain slopes, having been washed by the showers of rain on all sides, are cleansed. They are shining in variegated colours and look as though the mountain peaks are smeared with glowing colours (of minerals).
śākhāsu saptacchadapādapānāṅ

prabhāsu tārārkaniśākarāṇām.

līlāsu caivōttama vāraṇānāṅ

śriyaṅ vibhajyādya śaratpravṛttā4.30.28৷৷


adya now, śarat autumn, saptacchadapādapānām the seven-leafed banana, śākhāsu on their branches, tārārkaniśākarāṇām among stars, Sun and Moon, prabhāsu in their radiance, uttamavāraṇānām among the best of elephants, līlāsu ca in their sporting, śriyam grace, vibhajya divided, pravṛttā has set in.

'The autumn has set in, manifesting its grace on the branches of saptachada trees(seven-leafed banana plant) through the radiance of stars, Sun and Moon and through the sports of excellent elephants.
sampratyanēkāśraya citraśōbhā

lakṣmīśśaratkālaguṇōpanītā.

sūryāgrahastapratibōdhitēṣu

padmākarēṣvabhyadhikaṅ vibhāti4.30.29৷৷


samprati at present, anēkāśrayacitraśōbhā manifesting beauty in varied manner, śaratkālaguṇōpapannā brought about by the merits of the season, lakṣmīḥ goddess of wealth, sūryāgrahastapratibōdhitēṣu touched by the rays of the Sun, padmākarēṣu the lotuses, adhikam exceedingly, vibhāti shines.

'From the beauty of autumn manifested in a variety of ways on the clusters of lotuses, touched by the Sun, it seems the goddess of wealth shines and shines effulgently. (The lotus is goddess Laxmi's favourite flower)
saptacchadānāṅ kusumōpagandhī

ṣaṭpādabṛndairanugīyamānaḥ.

mattadvipānāṅ pavanō.nusārī

darpaṅ vinēṣyannadhikaṅ karōti৷৷4.30.30৷৷


ṣaṭpādabṛndaiḥ swarms of honeybees, anugīyamānaḥ humming, pavana: the wind, anusārī a follower, saptacchadānām saptachada trees, kusumōpagandhī carrying the fragrance of flowers, mattadvipānām of elephants in rut, darpam pride, vinēṣyan leading it forward, adhikam increasingly, karōti doing.

'The wind carries the fragrance of saptachada flowers. Attracted by the fragrance, swarms of bees come humming. The pride of the elephants in rut increases.
abhyāgataiścāruviśālapakṣai-

ssaraḥpriyaiḥ padmarajōvakīrṇaiḥ.

mahānadīnāṅ pulinōpayātaiḥ

krīḍanti haṅsāssaha cakravākaiḥ4.30.31৷৷


haṅsāḥ swans, abhyāgataiḥ coming together and facing each other, cāruviśālapakṣaiḥ by the birds with lovely wide wings, saraḥpriyaiḥ lovers of lakes, padmarajōvakīrṇaiḥ covered with the pollen dust of lotuses, mahānadīnām of great rivers, pulinōpayātaiḥ by those settled on the sand banks, cakravākaiḥ saha with chakravakas, krīḍanti sporting.

'The swans have come face to face with chakravaka birds. They have newly arrived. Lovers of lakes, they are shaking the pollen of lotuses on their lovely wide wings and have settled on the sandy banks-sporting.
madapragalbhēṣu ca vāraṇēṣu

gavāṅ samūhēṣu ca darpitēṣu.

prasannatōyāsu ca nimnagāsu

vibhāti lakṣmīrbahudhā vibhaktā4.30.32৷৷


madapragalbhēṣu among the proud, vāraṇēṣu among the elephants, darpitēṣu among the excited, gavām of bulls, samūhēṣu among herds, prasannatōyāsu in the clear water, nimnagāsu ca in the streams, bahudhā severally, vibhaktā divided, lakṣmīḥ beauty, vibhāti shining.

'Goddess Laxmi with her scattered self shines there among the proud elephants, among herds of excited bulls and among streams with clear water.
nabhassamīkṣyāmbudharairvimuktaṅ

vimuktabarhābharaṇā vanēṣu.

priyāsvasaktā vinivṛttaśōbhā

gatōtsavā dhyānaparā mayūrāḥ4.30.33৷৷


vanēṣu in the forests, mayūrāḥ peacocks, ambudharaiḥ by the clouds, vimuktam devoid, nabhaḥ sky, samīkṣya on seeing, vimuktabarhābharaṇāḥ those who have shed their ornamental plumage, priyāsu loved ones, asaktāḥ lost interest, vinivṛttaśōbhāḥ their glory withdrawn, gatōtsavāḥ devoid of happiness, dhyānaparāḥ are absorbed.

'The sky is free from clouds. The peacocks have shed their ornamental plumes. They have lost interest in their beloveds. With their glory withdrawn, the peacocks are devoid of happiness and absorbed in the thought of the clouds.
manōjñagandhaiḥ priyakairanalpaiḥ

puṣpātibhārāvanatāgraśākhaiḥ.

suvarṇagaurairnayanābhirāmai

rudyōtitānīva vanāntarāṇi4.30.34৷৷


manōjñagandhaiḥ fine-smelling, puṣpātibhārāvanatāgraśākhaiḥ tips of branches bent with heavy load of flowers, suvarṇagauraiḥ golden coloured, nayanābhirāmaiḥ delightful to the eyes, analpaiḥ by many, priyakaiḥ by priyaka trees, vanāntarāṇi forestland, udyōtitānīva as if illuminated.

'The forests are delightful to the eyes, as if illuminated by a large number of golden-coloured, fine-smelling priyaka branches bent under the heavy loads of flowers.
priyānvitānāṅ nalinīpriyāṇāṅ

vanē ratānāṅ kusumōddhatānām.

madōtkaṭānāṅ madalālasānāṅ

gajōttamānāṅ gatayō.dya mandāḥ4.30.35৷৷


adya now, priyānvitānām accompanied by their loved ones, nalinīpriyāṇām who love lotus ponds, vanē ratānāṅ who enjoy the forest, kusumōddhatānām who are enthused by the smell of flowers,madalālasānām of the deeply passionate, madōtkaṭānām of the excited by intoxication,
gajōttamānām lordly elephants, gatayaḥ movements, mandāḥare slow

'Lordly elephants accompanied by their dear female mates, fond of lotus ponds and woods are out to enjoy the sweet smell of the blossoms of saptachada and excited by passion and longing for sexual union are moving slowly.
vyabhraṅ nabhaśśastravidhautavarṇaṅ

kṛśapravāhāni nadījalāni.

kahlāraśītāḥ pavanāḥ pravānti

tamōvimuktāśca diśaḥ prakāśāḥ4.30.36৷৷


vyabhram bereft of clouds, nabhaḥ sky, śastravidhautavarṇam shining like polished weapons, nadījalāni river water, kṛśapravāhāni have thin flow, kahlāraśītāḥ cool by blowing over white lotuses, pavanāḥ winds, pravānti are blowing, tamōvimuktāḥ rid of darkness, diśaḥ quarters, prakāśāḥ shining.

'Cleared of the black clouds, the sky is shining like a polished weapon. The river waters flow feebly. Winds blowing over white lotuses feel cool. All quarters clear of darkness are shining.
sūryātapakrāmaṇanaṣṭapaṅkā

bhūmiścirōdadhāṭitasāndrarēṇuḥ.

anyōnyavairēṇasamāyutānā-

mudyōgakālō.dya narādhipānām4.30.37৷৷


sūryātapakrāmaṇanaṣṭapaṅkā mud dried up with the heat of the Sun, bhūmiḥ earth, cirōdaghāṭitasāndrarēṇuḥ thick dust raised after a long time, anyōnyavairēṇa with mutual enmity, samāyutānām of those endowed with, narādhipānāma of the kings, adya now, udyōgakālaḥ right time for expeditions.

śaradguṇāpyāyitarūpaśōbhāḥ

praharṣitāḥ pāṅśusamutkṣitāṅgāḥ.

madōtkaṭāssamprati yuddhalubdhā

vṛṣā gavāṅ madhyagatā nadanti4.30.38৷৷


śaradguṇāpyāyitarūpaśōbhāḥ appearance made attractive by the attributes of Autumn, praharṣitāḥ happy, pāṅśusamutkṣitāṅgāḥ dust settled on their limbs, madōtkaṭāḥ excited by passion, gavām cows, madhyagatāḥ surrounded, vṛṣāḥ bulls, samprati now, yuddhalubdhāḥ are ready to fight, nadanti bellowing.

'The bulls surrounded by cows are bellowing with the dust settled on their limbs. Excited by passion they are happy, ready to fight. They look attractive, blessed by the attributes of Autumn.
samanmathaṅ tīvragatānurāgāḥ

kulānvitā mandagatiṅ kariṇyaḥ.

madānvitaṅ samparivārya yāntaṅ

vanēṣu bhartāramanuprayānti4.30.39৷৷


samanmathāṅ a passionate lord, tīvragatānurāgā with very deep love, kulānvitā animals of high breed, mandagatiṅ slowly moving male partner, kariṇyaḥ female elephants, vanēṣuḥ in the forest, yāntam while he moves, madānvitam who is in rut, bhartāram their male partner, samparivārya after encircling, anuprayānti follow him.

'The female elephants of good breed, deeply passionate, gather round and follow their intoxicated lord moving slowly through the forest.
tyaktvā varāṇyātmavibhūṣaṇāni

barhāṇi tīrōpagatā nadīnām.

nirbhartsyamānā iva sārasaughaiḥ

prayānti dīnā vimadā mayūrāḥ4.30.40৷৷


ātmavibhūṣitāni their wear, varāṇi excellent, barhāṇi feathers, tyaktvā shed, nadīnām of the rivers, tīrōpagatāḥ on the banks, mayūrāḥ peacocks, sārasaughaiḥ by the herds of sarasa birds, nirbhartsyamānāḥ iva as though taunted, dīnāḥ piteous, vimadāḥ devoid of high spirit, prayānti going.

'The peacocks have shed their ornamental wear, their plumes. They are moving on the river banks miserably, devoid of high spirit as if they are being taunted by flocks of sarasa birds (who are high-spinted and cheerful).
vitrāsya kāraṇḍavacakravākā-

nmahāravairbhinnakaṭā gajēndrāḥ.

sarassu baddhāmbujabhūṣaṇēṣu

vikṣōbhya vikṣōbhya jalaṅ pibanti4.30.41৷৷


bhinnakaṭāḥ elephants in rut (exuding ichor), gajēndrāḥ best elephants, mahāravaiḥ with loud trumpet, kāraṇḍavacakravākān waterbirds like ducks and chakravakas, vitrāsya after terrorising, baddhāmbujabhūṣaṇēṣu ornamented with blooming lotuses, sarassu in tanks, jalam water, vikṣōbhya vikṣōbhya stirring, pibanti drinking.

'Excellent elephants in rut, with ichor exuding from their temples trumpet, frightening the ducks and chakravaka birds in the water. Strirring the water in the lakes, ornamented with lotuses, they drink it.
vyapētapaṅkāsu savālukāsu

prasannatōyāsu sagōkulāsu.

sasārasārāvanināditāsu

nadīṣu hṛṣṭā nipatanti haṅsāḥ4.30.42৷৷


vyapētapaṅkāsu in spots cleared of mud, savālukāsu sand dunes, prasannatōyāsu pure water, sagōkulāsu with cows, sasārasārāvanināditāsu where sarasa birds are singing delightfully, nadīṣu in the rivers, haṅsāḥ swans, hṛṣṭāḥ happily, nipatanti reach.

'The swans are full of joy, flocking on the sand banks of rivers crowded with cows where the water is pure and devoid of mud. The rivers are full of sarasa birds and swans who are singing delightfully.
nadīghanaprasravaṇōdakānā-

matipravṛddhānilabarhiṇānām.

plavaṅgamānāṅ ca gatōtsavānāṅ

drutaṅ ravāssamprati sampraṇaṣṭāḥ4.30.43৷৷


samprati now, nadīghanaprasravaṇōdakānām of the water of rivers, clouds and waterfalls, atipravṛddhānilabarhiṇānām of peacocks excited by blowing winds, gatōtsavānām having lost pleasure, plavaṅgamānāṅ ca and the frogs, sampraṇaṣṭāḥ lost, drutaṅ quickly.

'Suddenly the turbulent sounds of the river waters, waterfalls and thunder-clouds have stopped. The peacoks having lost the pleasure of blowing winds lost their excitement. The croaking of frogs is silent.
anēkavarṇāssuvinaṣṭakāyā

navōditēṣvambudharēṣu naṣṭāḥ.

kṣudhārditā ghōraviṣā bilēbhya-

ścirōṣitā viprasaranti sarpāḥ4.30.44৷৷


ambudharēṣu as the rain-clouds, navōditēṣu when seen fresh, naṣṭāḥ lost, suvinaṣṭakāyāḥ bodies emaciated, anēkavarṇāḥ of different colours, kṣudhārditāḥ troubled by hunger, ghōraviṣāḥ highly poisonous, cirōṣitāḥ staying for a long time, sarpāḥ serpents, bilēbhyaḥ from ant-hills, viprasaranti are coming out.

'With no new rain-clouds (in the sky), venomous, multicoloured serpents crawl out of the anthills with emacited (hybernated) bodies, troubled by hunger due to long confinement.
cañcaccandrakarasparśaharṣōnmīlitatārakā.

ahō rāgavatī sandhyā jahāti svayamambaram4.30.45৷৷


cañcaccandrakarasparśaharṣōnmīlitatārakā with the touch of Moon's beams, rāgavatī red in colour, sandhyā twilight, svayam on her own, ambaram sky, jahāti quitting, ahō Oh!

'While the stars appear with the soothing touch of the Moon's beams, this ruddy twilight is quitting the sky on her own.
rātriśśaśāṅkōditasaumyavaktrā

tārāgaṇōnmīlitacārunētrā.

jyōtsnāṅśukaprāvaraṇā vibhāti

nārīva śuklāṅśukasaṅvṛtāṅgī4.30.46৷৷


śaśāṅkōditasaumyavaktrā with a face made beautiful with moonlight, tārāgaṇōnmīlitacārunētrā her beautiful eyes opened up by stars, rātriḥ night, śuklāṅśukasaṅvṛtāṅgī her body draped in the robe of white light (of the moon), nārīva like a woman, vibhāti appears bright
jyōtsnāṅśukaprāvaraṇā wrapped in the robe of moonlight.

'The night appears like a lady with a sweet face lit up by the rising Moon, her beautiful eyes opened up by stars, her body draped in the robe of white Moon light.
vipakvaśāliprasavāni bhuktvā

praharṣitā sārasacārupaṅktiḥ.

nabhassamākrāmati śīghravēgāḥ

vātāvadhūtā grathitēva mālā4.30.47৷৷


vipakvaśāliprasavāni stocks of paddy full of ripened grain, bhuktvā after eating, praharṣitā very joyful, sārasacārupaṅkti: lovely rows of sarasa birds, śīghravēgā at great speed, vātāvadhūtā flown by wind, grathitā strung, mālā iva like a garland, nabhaḥ sky, samākrāmati occupies.

'Driven by the wind, the lovely sarasa birds, after eating ripened grains from paddy fields happily fly the sky in rows like a garland at great speed.
suptaikahaṅsaṅ kumudairupētaṅ

mahāhradasthaṅ salilaṅ vibhāti.

ghanairvimuktaṅ niśi pūrṇacandraṅ

tārāgaṇākīrṇamivāntarikṣam4.30.48৷৷


suptaikahaṅsam one swan sleeping, kumudaiḥ night lotuses, upētam endowed, mahāhradastham found in a big tank, salilam water, niśi at night, ghanaiḥ with clouds, vimuktam devoid, tārāgaṇākīrṇam be sprinkled with stars, pūrṇacandram full Moon, antarikṣam iva like the sky, vibhāti shining.

'With a single swan in sleep night lotuses blooming around it, the water in the big tank appear like the sky free from clouds with the full Moon and clusters of stars scattered. (The swan is the moon, the lotuses the stars and the clean pond the sky).
prakīrṇahaṅsākulamēkhalānāṅ

prabuddhapadmōtpalamālinīnām.

vāpyuttamānāmadhikā.dya lakṣmī-

rvarāṅganānāmiva bhūṣitānām4.30.49৷৷


prakīrṇahaṅsākulamēkhalānāṅ swans scattered around like girdles, prabuddhapadmōtpalamālinīnām with bloomimg and lilies lotuses like garlands, vāpyuttamānām of deep wells, lakṣmīḥ Goddess of wealth, adya now, bhūṣitānām decorated, varāṅganānāmiva like excellent ladies, adhikā very much.

'Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth (also of autumn) appears decorated with deep wells like an excellent lady with swans as girdles and blooming lotuses and lilies as garlands.
vēṇusvanavyañjitatūryamiśraḥ

pratyūṣakālānilasampravṛddhaḥ.

sammūrchitō gargaragōvṛṣāṇā-

manyōnyamāpūrayatīva śabdaḥ4.30.50৷৷


vēṇusvaravyañjitatūryamiśraḥ mixed with the melodies of the bamboos, anilasampravṛddhaḥ enhanced by the wind, sammūrchitaḥ overwhelming, śabdaḥ (bellowing) sounds, pratyūṣakālē of early morning, gargaragōvṛṣāṇām of the bulls moving inside the caves, anyōnyam with each other, āpūrayatīva as if filling.

'The whistling of bamboos enhanced by the wind in the early morning, and the bellowing of bulls echoing in the caves supplement each other as it were.
navairnadīnāṅ kusumaprabhāsai-

rvyādhūyamānairmṛdumārutēna.

dhautāmalakṣaumapaṭaprakāśaiḥ

kūlāni kāśairupaśōbhitāni4.30.51৷৷


nadīnām of rivers, kūlāni banks, kusumaprabhāsaiḥ full of fresh bloomimg flowers, mṛdumārutēna by the gentle wind, vyādhūyamānaiḥ made to move, dhautāmalakṣaumapaṭaprakāśaiḥ shining like a clean white silken cloth, navaiḥ fresh, kāśaiḥ kasa reeds, upaśōbhitāni shine.

'The river banks shining with fresh white flowers of kasa reeds swayed by the gentle breeze silken look like a lady wrapped in white silk.
vanapracaṇḍā madhupānaśauṇḍāḥ

priyānvitāṣṣaṭcaraṇāḥ prahrṛṣṭāḥ.

vanēṣu mattāḥ pavanānuyātrāṅ

kurvanti padmāsanarēṇugaurāḥ4.30.52৷৷


vanapracaṇḍāḥ roaming fearlessly in the forest exhibiting their power, madhupānaśauṇḍāḥ adept in drinking honey, prahṛṣṭāḥ joyfully, mattāḥ deluded, padmāsanarēṇugaurāḥ appeared white by the pollen dust of lotus cups, ṣaṭcaraṇāḥ bees, priyānvitāḥ along with their female companions, vanēṣu in the forest, pavanānuyātrām following the wind, kurvanti are venturing.

'The butterflies glitter around in the forest fearlessly showing their skill in drinking honey, with their backs turned white with the dust of pollen grains from the lotus cups. They follow the wind along with their loved ones in the forest.
jalaṅ prasannaṅ kumudaṅ prabhāsaṅ

krauñcasvanaśśālivanaṅ vipakvam.

mṛduśca vāyurvimalaśca candra-

śśaṅsanti varṣavyapanītakālam4.30.53৷৷


kumudaṅ prabhāsam lilies in full bloom, krauñcasvanam the cackle of krauncha birds, prasannam clear, jalam waters, vipakvam fully ripe, śālivanam paddyfields, mṛduḥ gentle, vāyuḥ breeze, vimalaḥ bright, candraśca Moon, varṣavyapanītakālam coming to an end of the rainy season, śaṅsanti speak out.

'The fresh blooms of night lotuses, the cackle of krauncha birds, fully ripened fields of paddy, the gentle breeze and the bright Moon indicate the coming to an end of the rainy season and setting in of autum.
mīnōpasandarśitamēkhalānāṅ

nadīvadhūnāṅ gatayō.dya mandāḥ.

kāntōpabhuktālasagāminīnāṅ

prabhātakālēṣviva kāminīnām4.30.54৷৷


mīnōpasandarśitamēkhalānām displaying fish as girdles, nadīvadhūnām of river-brides, gatayaḥ flow, adya now, prabhātakālēṣu in the early morning, iva as if, kāntōpabhuktālasagāminīnām like the women exhausted with sexual pleasures, kāminīnām iva like the beloveds, mandāḥ gentle.

'Now the river-brides, displaying their girdles of fish, have slowed down like the gait of sensuous ladies in the early morning, exhausted by sexual pleasures.
sacakravākāni saśaivalāni

kāśairdukūlairiva saṅvṛtāni.

sapatralēkhāni sarōcanāni

vadhūmukhānīva nadīmukhāni4.30.55৷৷


sacakravākāni with all the chakravaka birds, saśaivalāni with green moss, dukūlairiva as if with silk clothes, kāśaiḥ with reeds, saṅvṛtāni covered, nadīmukhāni faces of rivers, sapatralēkhāni designs drawn on green leaves, sarōcanāni with Gorochana, vadhūmukhānīva like the bride's face.

'Crowded with chakravaka birds and green moss, and covered with kasa reeds like silken veils, the river banks appear like the face of the bride decorated with designs of green leaves and gorochana tilaka.
praphullabāṇāsanacitritēṣu

prahṛṣṭaṣaṭpādanikūjitēṣu.

gṛhītacāpōdyatacaṇḍadaṇḍaḥ

pracaṇḍacārō.dya vanēṣu kāmaḥ4.30.56৷৷


adya now, praphullabāṇāsanacitritēṣu cheerful as though painted with bana and asana flowers, prahṛṣṭaṣaṭpādanikūjitēṣu bees are humming happily, vanēṣu in the forest, gṛhītacāpōdyatacaṇḍadaṇḍaḥ holding the bow and awarding strict punishment, kāmaḥ Cupid, pracaṇḍacāraḥ moving with great speed and power.

'Now Cupid is moving unobstructed showing his power by holding his bow indicating strict punishment to those separated from their beloveds in the forests with bana and asana flowers in bloom and bees humming happily.
lōkaṅ suvṛṣṭyā paritōṣayitvā

nadīstaṭākāni ca pūrayitvā.

niṣpannasasyāṅ vasudhāṅ ca kṛtvā

tyaktvā nabhastōyadharāḥ praṇaṣṭāḥ4.30.57৷৷


tōyadharāḥ clouds, suvṛṣṭyā with good showers, lōkam people, paritōṣayitvā after satisfying, nadīḥ rivers, taṭākāni ca and tanks, pūrayitvā having filled, vasudhām earth, niṣpannasasyām green all
over with crops, kṛtvā after doing, nabhaḥ sky, tyaktvā leaving, praṇaṣṭāḥ disappeared.

'Having showered heavy rains, and filling tanks and rivers, and producing bumper crops on the earth the clouds have disapeared.
darśayanti śarannadyaḥ pulināni śanaiḥ śanaiḥ.

navasaṅgamasavrīḍā jaghanānīva yōṣitaḥ4.30.58৷৷


navasaṅgamasavrīḍāḥ bashful of the sexual union with husband for the first time, yōṣitaḥ young women, jaghanānīva their loins, śarannadyaḥ bashful, pulināni sand banks, śanaiḥ śanaiḥ slowly, darśayanti show.

'Just as bashful young brides show their loins slowly during their first sexual meet the rivers start showing their sandy banks slowly in autumn.
prasannasalilāssaumya kurarībhirvināditāḥ.

cakravākagaṇākīrṇā vibhānti salilāśayāḥ4.30.59৷৷


saumya O gentle Lakshmana, prasannasalilāḥ with pure waters, kurarībhirvināditāḥ resounded with the singing of female kurari birds, cakravākagaṇākīrṇāḥ with flocks of chakravaka birds, salilāśayāḥ water tanks, vibhānti are shining.

'O gentle Lakshmana! the pure water in the tanks and sweet sounds of flocks of female kurari birds and chakravakas there are splendid.
asanāssaptaparṇāśca kōvidārāśca puṣpitāḥ.

dṛśyantē bandhujīvāśca śyāmāśca girisānuṣu4.30.60৷৷


girisānuṣu on the mountain slopes, puṣpitāḥ blossomed, asanāḥ asana flowers, saptaparṇāśca saptaparnas, kōvidārāśca kovidaras, bandhujīvāḥ bandhujeeva trees, śyāmāśca Shyama creepers, dṛśyantē are seen.

'The asanas, saptaparna, kovida and bandhujeeva trees and shyama creepers are seen in full bloom on the mountain slopes.
haṅsasārasacakrāhvaiḥ kuraraiśca samantataḥ.

pulinānyavakīrṇāni nadīnāṅ paśya lakṣmaṇa!4.30.61৷৷


lakṣmaṇa! Lakshmana, nadīnām of rivers, pulināni sand banks, haṅsasāracakrāhvaiḥ with swans sarasa and chakravaka birds, kuraraiśca and kurara, samantataḥ allover, avakīrṇāni scattered, paśya look.

'Lakshmana! look at the swans, sarasas, chakravakas and kurara birds scattered all over the river banks.
anyōnyabaddhavairāṇāṅ jigīṣūṇāṅ nṛpātmaja!.

udyōgasamayassaumya! pārthivānāmupasthitaḥ4.30.62৷৷


nṛpātmaja! O prince!, saumya! O handsome one, anyōnyabaddhavairāṇām having enmity against others, jigīṣūṇām waiting to be victorious, pārthivānām of kings, udyōgasamayaḥ time for expeditions, upasthitaḥ has come.

'O handsome prince! the time has come for making expeditions by kings against the enemies waiting for victory.
iyaṅ sā prathamā yātrā pārthivānāṅ nṛpātmaja!

na ca paśyāmi sugrīvamudyōgaṅ vā tathāvidham4.30.63৷৷


nṛpātmaja O prince!, iyam this, pārthivānām for kings, sā that, prathamā yātrā first expedition, sugrīvam Sugriva, tathāvidham in that manner, udyōgaṅ vā or effort, na ca paśyāmi I do not see.

'O prince! this is time for the first expedition (of the year) by kings. I do not find Sugriva making effort in that direction.
catvārō vārṣikā māsā gatā varṣaśatōpamāḥ.

mama śōkābhibhūtasya saumya sītāmapaśyataḥ4.30.64৷৷


sītām Sita, apaśyataḥ not seeing, saumya O gentle one, śōkābhibhūtasya caught in grief, mama to me, varṣaśatōpamāḥ equal to a hundred years, vārṣikāḥ rainy, catvāraḥ four, māsāḥ months, gatāḥ are gone.

'O gentle one, the four months of rainy season are spent without seeing Sita. It is equal to a hundred years for my grief-stricken heart.
cakravākīva bhartāraṅ pṛṣṭhatō.nugatā vanam.

viṣamaṅ daṇḍakāraṇyamudyānamiva yā.gatā4.30.65৷৷


cakravākīva just as a female chakravaka, bhartāram husband, viṣamam difficult, vanam forest, daṇḍakāraṇyam Dandaka forest, udyānamiva like pleasure garden, pṛṣṭhataḥ at the back, anugatā followed.

'Just as a female chakravaka follows the male, Sita followed her husband into this dense Dandaka forest as though it is a pleasure-garden.
priyāvihīnē duḥkhārtē hṛtarājyē vivāsitē.

kṛpāṅ na kurutē rājā sugrīvō mayi lakṣmaṇa4.30.66৷৷


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana!, priyāvihīnē separated from wife, duḥkhārtē a grief-stricken man, hṛtarājyē lost kingdom, vivāsitē banished, mayi at me, rājā sugrīvaḥ king Sugriva, kṛpām mercy, na kurutē not showing.

'O Lakshmana! king Sugriva shows no mercy on one, who is grief-stricken, separated from his wife, and banished from the kingdom.
anāthō hṛtarājyō.yaṅ rāvaṇēna ca dharṣitaḥ.

dīnō dūragṛhaḥ kāmī māṅ caiva śaraṇaṅ gataḥ4.30.67৷৷

ityētaiḥ kāraṇaissaumya! sugrīvasya durātmanaḥ.

ahaṅ vānararājasya paribhūtaḥ parantapa!4.30.68৷৷


saumya gentle, parantapa vanquisher of foes, ayam this person, anāthaḥ helpless, hṛtarājyaḥ lost kingdom, dīnaḥ miserable, dūragṛhaḥ away from home, rāvaṇēna ca,by Ravana, dharṣitaḥ outraged,kāmī love-sick, māṅ caiva me also, śaraṇaṅ gataḥ sought help, ityētaiḥ by these, kāraṇaiḥ with reasons, durātmanaḥ of the evil-minded, vānararājasya of the king of monkeys, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, aham I am, paribhūtaḥ slighted.

'O gentle one! although I am a vanquisher of foes, this evil-minded king of monkeys is slighting me because I am away from home, I have lost my kingdom, I am outraged by Ravana, I am miserable and love-sick and I have sought his help.
sa kālaṅ parisaṅkhyāya sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇē.

kṛtārthassamayaṅ kṛtvā durmatirnāvabudhyatē4.30.69৷৷


durmatiḥ evil-minded, saḥ he, kṛtārthaḥ fulfilled his objective, sītāyāḥ Sita's, parimārgaṇē in search of, kālam time, parisaṅkhyāya having failed, samayam promise, kṛtvā made, nāva budhyatē does not realise it.

'The evil-minded Sugriva, having fulfilled his objective, does not realise that he has made a promise to me and has reached the time set for the search of Sita.
tvaṅ ca kiṣkindhāṅ praviśya brūhi vānarapuṅgavam.

mūrkhaṅ grāmyasukhē saktaṅ sugrīvaṅ vacanānmama4.30.70৷৷


kiṣkindhām into Kishkinda, praviśya entering, vānarapuṅgavam chief of monkeys, mūrkham fool, grāmyasukhē native pleasures, saktam is engaged, sugrīvam Sugriva, mama my, vacanāt words, brūhi tell him.

'Go to Kishkinda and speak (on my behalf ) to that fool, Sugriva, the chief of monkeys who is revelling in habitual sensual pleasures
arthināmupapannānāṅ pūrvaṅ cāpyupakāriṇām.

āśāṅ saṅśrutya yō hanti sa lōkē puruṣādhamaḥ4.30.71৷৷


upapannānām approached, pūrvam earlier, upakāriṇāṅ ca and who has helped, arthinām the one who requested , saṅśrutya with regard to, āśām hopes, yaḥ he who, hanti disappoints, saḥ he, lōkē on the earth, puruṣādhama: lowest among men.

'He who, having promised to his friend to grant his desire and who, having been obliged, fails to implement the promise, is the lowest on earth.
śubhaṅ vā yadi vā pāpaṅ yō hi vākyamudīritam.

satyēna pratigṛhṇāti sa vīraḥ puruṣōttamaḥ4.30.72৷৷


yaḥ hi he who, śubhaṅ vā good or, yadi vā or else, pāpam sin, udīritam which has been promised, vākyam words, satyēna truly, pratigṛhṇāti will follow, saḥ vīraḥ he is a hero, puruṣōttamaḥ the best of men.

'(On the other hand) he who honours his promise, whether good or bad, is truly heroic, the best of men.'
kṛtārthā hyakṛtārthānāṅ mitrāṇāṅ na bhavanti yē.

tānmṛtānapi kravyādāḥ kṛtaghnānnōpabhuñjatē4.30.73৷৷


kṛtārthāḥ one who has achieved his objective, yē whoever, akṛtārthānām of the needy man, mitrāṇām to the friends, na bhavanti not help, mṛtān after death, kṛtaghnān ungrateful people, tān them, kravyādāḥ api even by carnivorous animals, na upabhuñjatē not like to eat.

'Even the carnivorous animals dislike to eat the body of such ungrateful men who do not help their friends even though they have received help and have achieved their
objective.'
nūnaṅ kāñcanapṛṣṭhasya vikṛṣṭasya mayā raṇē.

draṣṭumicchati cāpasya rūpaṅ vidyudgaṇōpamam4.30.74৷৷


nūnam surely, kāñcanapṛṣṭhasya inlaid with gold, raṇē in war, mayā by me, vikṛṣṭasya when bent, cāpasya bow's, vidyudgaṇōpamam like a streak of lightning, rūpam form, draṣṭum to see, icchasi desires.

'Surely he wishes to see the form of my bow inlaid with gold bent by me to its full length, looking like a streak of lightning.
ghōraṅ jyātalanirghōṣaṅ kruddhasya mama saṅyugē.

nirghōṣamiva vajrasya punassaṅśrōtumicchasi4.30.75৷৷


saṅyugē in the combat, kruddhasya of the enraged, mama my, vajrasya thunderbolt's, nirghōṣamiva like the terrific sound, ghōram dreadful, jyātalanirghōṣam twang of the bow string, punaḥ again, saṅśrōtum to hear, icchasi wants.

'Perhaps he wants once again to hear when enraged in a combat, the dreadful twang of my bow, resembling the peal of a thunderbolt .
kāmamēvaṅgatē.pyasya parijñātē parākramē.

tvatsahāyasya mē vīra! na cintā syānnṛpātmaja4.30.76৷৷


vīra a hero, nṛpātmaja prince, asya his, parijñātē knowing fully, parākramē my valour, kām ēvaṅ gatē.pi revelling in sensual pleasures, tvatsahāyasya when you are with me to help, mē my, cintā worry, na syāt has no .

'O prince! knowing my valour fully welI, and knowing that you are here to help me he is unhesitatingly revelling in sensual pleasures.
yadarthamayamārambhaḥ kṛtaḥ parapurañjayaḥ.

samayaṅ nābhijānāti kṛtārthaḥ plavagēśvaraḥ4.30.77৷৷


parapurañjayaḥ one who can conquer the enemy's capital, yadartham what for, ayam this, ārambhaḥ effort, kṛtaḥ one who made, samayam promise kṛtārthaḥ one who has achieved his goal, plavagēśvaraḥ king of monkeys, nābhijānāti does not realise.

'O conqueror of the enemy capital! the monkey lord who has achieved his goal does not realise the importance of my mission.
varṣāsamayakālaṅ tu pratijñāya harīśvaraḥ.

vyatītāṅścaturō māsānviharannāvabudhyatē4.30.78৷৷


harīśvaraḥ Sugriva, varṣāsamayakālam in the rainy season, pratijñāya having sworn, viharan revelling, vyatītān spent, caturaḥ four, māsān months, nāvabudhyatē he is not aware.

'Having promised (to search for Sita) after the rainy season,Sugriva is not aware that he has (already) spent the four months-revelling.
sāmātyapariṣatkrīḍanpānamēvōpasēvatē.

śōkadīnēṣu nāsmāsu sugrīvaḥ kurutē dayām4.30.79৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, sāmātyapariṣat with the council of ministers, krīḍan sporting, pānamēva in drinking only, upasēvatē resorting to, śōkadīnēṣu wretched with sorrow, asmāsu at us, dayām compassion, na kurutē is showing.

'Sporting with the council of ministers surrounding him, resorting to drinking, he shows no compassion to us feeling wretched with grief.
ucyatāṅ gaccha sugrīvastvayā vatsa! mahābala!.

mama rōṣasya yadrūpaṅ brūyāścaivamidaṅ vacaḥ4.30.80৷৷


mahābala! mighty, vīra! warrior, gaccha go, tvayā by you, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, mama my, rōṣasya about my anger, yat such, rūpam form, ucyatām make him know, ēvam that way, idam this, vacaḥ word, vatsa dear, brūyā: tell.

'O mighty warrior! O dear, go to Sugriva and make him aware of the virulence of my anger and tell him:
na ca saṅkucitaḥ panthā yēna vālī hatō gataḥ.

samayē tiṣṭha sugrīva! mā vālipathamanvagāḥ4.30.81৷৷


sugrīva! Sugriva, samayē as per pledge, tiṣṭha abide, hataḥ killed, vālī Vali, yēna by the root, gataḥ had gone, panthāḥ path, na ca saṅkucitaḥ is not a narrow one, vālipatham Vali's path, mā anvagāḥ you do not follow.

'The route by which Vali departed, killed by me has not been closed. O Sugriva! you ought to abide by the pledge given. Do not follow the path of Vali.
ēka ēva raṇē vālī śarēṇa nihatō mayā.

tvāṅ tu satyādatikrāntaṅ haniṣyāmi sabāndhavam4.30.82৷৷


mayā by me, raṇē in a combat, śarēṇa by an arrow, ēkaḥ one, vālī ēva Vali alone, hataḥ killed, satyāt from the truth, atikrāntam deviated from the truth, tvāṅ tu you also, sabāndhavam along with your near and dear, haniṣyāmi I will kill.

'Vali was killed by me in the battle with a single arrow while I shall kill you now along with your near and dear ones since you have deviated from the truth.'
tadēvaṅ vihitē kāryē yaddhitaṅ puruṣarṣabha!.

tattadbhrūhi naraśrēṣṭhatvara kālavyatikramaḥ4.30.83৷৷


puruṣarṣabha O bull among men, naraśrēṣṭa O king among monkeys, tat therefore, kāryē in the task, ēvam in this way, vihitē when carried out, yat all that, hitam is good, tat all that, brūhi tell, tvara be quick, kālavyatikramaḥ time is passing.

'O bull among men! O hero! speak to him that all that is done in time is done well. Hurry up. Ask him to do whatever is good for him as well as for us:
kuruṣva satyaṅ mayi vānarēśvara!

pratiśrutaṅ dharmamavēkṣya śāśvatam.

mā vālinaṅ prētya gatō yamakṣayaṅ

tvamadya paśyērmama cōditaiśśaraiḥ4.30.84৷৷


vānarēśvara! O king among monkeys, śāśvatam eternal, dharmam dharma, avēkṣya following, mama my, pratiśrutam promise, satyam truth, kuruṣva doing, adya now, tvam you, mayi my, śaraiḥ by arrows, cōditai: hit by, prētya killed, yamakṣayam abode of Yama, gataḥ gone, vālinam Vali, mā paśyēḥ will see.

'O lord of monkeys! Carry out the promise you made to me, consider it to be eternal dharma. Slain by my arrows, you will see Vali in the abode of the lord of death.'
sa pūrvajaṅ tīvravivṛddhakōpaṅ

lālapyamānaṅ prasamīkṣya dīnam.

cakāra tīvrāṅ matimugratējā

harīśvarē mānavavaṅśanāthaḥ4.30.85৷৷


mānavavaṅśanāthaḥ protector of the human race, ugratējāḥ terrific lustre, saḥ he (Lakshmana), tīvravivṛddhakōpam very angry, dīnam piteous, lālapyamānam wailing, pūrvajam elder brother, prasamīkṣya on seeing, harīśvarē at Sugriva, tīvram intense, matim in mind, cakāra went.

On seeing Rama, the protector of the human race, wailing Lakshmana of terrific lustre hardened his stand against Sugriva and proceeded, charged with intense anger.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē triṅśassargaḥ
Thus ends the thirtieth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
