[Hanuman's soliloquy in despondency.]

विमानात्तु सुसम्क्रम्य प्राकारं हरियूथपः।

हनुमान्वेगवानासीद्यथा विद्युद्घनान्तरे।।5.13.1।।


हरियूथपः vanara leader, हनुमान् Hanuman, विमानात् from the aerial chariot, प्राकारम् boundary wall, सुसम्क्रम्य jumped, घनान्तरे in the clouds, विद्युत् यथा like the lightning, वेगवान् speedily, आसीत् appeared.

Hanuman, the vanara leader, jumped from the aerial chariot to the boundary wall like a flash of lightning in the clouds.
सम्परिक्रम्य हनुमान्रावणस्य निवेशनात्।

अदृष्ट्वा जानकीं सीतामब्रवीद्वचनं कपिः।।5.13.2।।


कपिः vanara, हनुमान् Hanuman, रावणस्य Ravana's, निवेशनात् from the home, सम्परिक्रम्य going round, जानकीम् Janaka's daughter, सीताम् Sita, अदृष्ट्वा not seeing, वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Going round the palace of Ravana, unable to see Janaka's daughter Sita, Hanuman spoke thus to himself:
भूयिष्ठं लोलिता लङ्का रामस्य चरता प्रियम्।

न हि पश्यामि वैदेहीं सीतां सर्वाङ्गशोभनाम्।।5.13.3।।


रामस्य Rama's, प्रियम् to please, चरता while doing, लङ्का Lanka, भूयिष्ठम् in and out, लोलिता checked thoroughly, सर्वाङ्गशोभनाम् of beautiful limbs, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, सीताम् Sita, न हि पश्यामि I have not seen.

"I have thoroughly surveyed the entire city of Lanka to please Rama, but I am unable to find Sita of flawless beauty.
पल्वलानि तटाकानि सरांसि सरितस्तथा।

नद्योऽनूपवनान्ताश्च दुर्गाश्च धरणीधराः।।5.13.4।।

लोलिता वसुधा सर्वा न तु पश्यामि जानकीम्।


पल्वलानि waterlogs, तटाकानि tanks, सरांसि lakes, तथा similarly, सरितः streams, नद्यः rivers, अनूपवनान्ताश्च along the woods, दुर्गाः difficult places to reach, धरणीधराः mountains, सर्वा: all, वसुधा over the land, लोलिता searched, जानकीं तु but Janaki, न पश्यामि I have not seen.

"I have searched for Sita thoroughly in waterlogs, lakes, tanks, streams and rivers and all over the woods and among mountains that are difficult to reach. I have searched all over the land but have not been able to find Janaki.
इह सम्पातिना सीता रावणस्य निवेशने।।5.13.5।।

आख्याता गृध्रराजेन न च पश्यामि तामहम्।


सीता Sita, इह here, रावणस्य Ravana's, निवेशने in his palace, गृध्रराजेन by the king of vultures, सम्पातिना by Sampati, आख्याता has told, अहम् I, ताम् her, न च पश्यामि but have not seen her.

"Sampati, king of vultures had said that Sita is at Ravana's palace. But I have not been able to see her.
किं नु सीताऽथ वैदेही मैथिली जनकात्मजा।।5.13.6।।

उपतिष्ठेत विवशा रावणं दुष्टचारिणम्।


अथ now, वैदेही princess of Videha, मैथिली Mythili, जनकत्माजा Janaka's daughter, सीता Sita, विवशा dejected helpless, दुष्टचारिणम् a man of evilconduct, रावणम् to Ravana, किं नु उपतिष्ठेत did she succumb?

"Can it be that Mythili, daughter of Janaka, dejected and helpless succumbed to the evil intentions of Ravana.
क्षिप्रमुत्पततो मन्ये सीतामादाय रक्षसः।।5.13.7।।

बिभ्यतो रामबाणानामन्तरा पतिता भवेत्।


रामबाणानाम् of the arrows of Rama, बिभ्यतः out of fear, रक्षसः the demon, सीताम् Sita, आदाय having brought, क्षिप्रम् at great speed, उत्पततः while flying, अन्तरा in the middle, पतिता dropped, भवेत् may be, मन्ये I think.

"Or, perhaps she might have been dropped midway from the hold of Ravana while he was flying at great speed, afraid of the deadly arrows of Rama?
अथवा ह्रियमाणायाः पथि सिद्धनिषेविते।।5.13.8।।

मन्ये पतितमार्याया हृदयं प्रेक्ष्य सागरम्।


अथवा or else, सिद्धनिषेविते frequented by siddhas, पथि on the path, ह्रियमाणायाः while being borne away, आर्यायाः of the noble lady, हृदयम् heart, सागरम् sea, प्रेक्ष्य on seeing, पतितम् fallen, मन्ये I think.

"Or, perhaps while being borne away on the path frequented by siddhas, the beloved of Rama might have fallen down (dead), heart broken, on seeing the (vast) sea.
रावणस्योरुवेगेन भुजाभ्यां पीडितेन च।।5.13.9।।

तया मन्ये विशालाक्ष्या त्यक्तं जीवितमार्यया।


रावणस्य Ravana's, उरुवेगेन by the high speed in the flight, भुजाभ्याम् with the arms, पीडितेन च being under pressure, विशालाक्ष्या by the largeeyed one, तया by her, आर्यया by the noble lady, जीवितम् life, त्यक्तम् given up, मन्ये I think.

"He thinks, on account of the high speed during the flight of Ravana under the
pressure of his arms, the noble, largeeyed lady might have given up her life.
उपर्युपरि वा नूनं सागरं क्रमतस्तदा।।5.13.10।।

विवेष्टमाना पतिता सागरे जनकात्मजा।


तदा then, सागरम् उपर्युपरि higher and higher over the sea, क्रमतः for him while he advanced, जनकात्मजा Janaki, विवेष्टमाना wriggling hard to extricate, सागरे in the sea, नूनम् surely, पतिता fallen.

"Surely, she might have fallen into the sea while wriggling in her effort to extricate herself from the hold of Ravana as he was flying over the sea.
अहो क्षुद्रेण वाऽनेन रक्षन्ती शीलमात्मनः।।5.13.11।।

अबन्धुर्भक्षिता सीता रावणेन तपस्विनी।


अहो Oh, आत्मनः of her self, शीलम् chastity, रक्षन्ती while protecting, अबन्धुः distanced from relatives, तपस्विनी a helpless woman, सीता Sita, क्षुद्रेण by the cruel one, अनेन by him, रावणेन by Ravana, भक्षिता eaten.

"Oh poor Sita, distanced from relations, while protecting her chastity helplessly she might have been devoured by cruel Ravana.
अथवा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य पत्नीभिरसितेक्षणा।।5.13.12।।

अदुष्टा दुष्टभावाभिर्भक्षिता सा भविष्यति।


अथवा or else, अदुष्टा a pious lady, असितेक्षणा blackeyed one, सा that, दुष्टभावाभिः by the cruelnatured, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य of the lord of rakshasas, पत्नीभिः by wives also, भक्षिता eaten, भविष्यति I think.

"Or else, the pious, blackeyed Sita might have been eaten by the the cruelnatured wives of the lord of demons.
सम्पूर्णचन्द्रप्रतिमं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम्।।5.13.13।।

रामस्य ध्यायती वक्त्रं पञ्चत्वं कृपणा गता।


कृपणा poor lady, सम्पूर्णचन्द्रप्रतिमम् like the fullmoon, पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम् with eyes like lotus petals, रामस्य Rama's, वक्त्रम् face, ध्यायती meditating on, पञ्चत्वम् death, गता attained.

"Or, she might have attained death, meditating on Rama, whose face resembles the fullmoon and eyes the lotus petals.
हा राम लक्ष्मणेत्येवं हाऽयोध्ये चेति मैथिली।।5.13.14।।

विलप्य बहु वैदेही न्यस्तदेहा भविष्यति।


वैदेही Vaidehi, मैथिली Mythili, हा राम Alas, Rama, हा लक्ष्मण alas, Lakshmana, हा अयोध्या alas, Ayodhya, इति thus, बहु very much, विलप्य weaping, न्यस्तदेहा cast off life, भविष्यति may be.

"Or, Vaidehi, the princess of Mithila might have cast off her life grieving intensely and crying, 'Alas, Rama, alas, Lakshmana, alas, Ayodhya'. (Mithila is the name of the capital city and Videha is the country which was ruled by Janaka. Sita, the princess is known as Vaidehi, Mythili and Janaki).
अथवा निहिता मन्ये रावणस्य निवेशने।।5.13.15।।

नूनं लालप्यते सीता पञ्जरस्थेव शारिका।


अथवा or else, रावणस्य Ravana's, निवेशने in his palace, निहिता kept, सीता Sita, पञ्जरस्था in the cage, शारिका इव like myna, नूनम् surely, लालप्यते crying, मन्ये I think.

"Or, I think Sita might have been imprisoned in a cage like a myna in Ravana's palace. She will be surely crying.
जनकस्य सुता सीता रामपत्नी सुमध्यमा।।5.13.16।।

कथमुत्पलपत्राक्षी रावणस्य वशं व्रजेत्।


जनकस्य Janaka's, सुता daughter, रामपत्नी Rama's wife, सुमध्यमा a lady of beautiful waist, उत्पलपत्राक्षी eyes like lotus petals, सीता Sita, रावणस्य Ravana's, वशम् fold, कथम् how, व्रजेत् can come under.

"How could Janaki, the daughter of Janaka, Rama's wife, the lady with a beautiful waist and eyes like lotus petals, come under the fold of Ravana?
विनष्टा वा प्रणष्टा वा मृता वा जनकात्मजा।।5.13.17।।

रामस्य प्रियभार्यस्य न निवेदयितुं क्षमम्।


जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, विनष्टा वा whether lost, प्रणष्टा वा or whether irretrievable, मृता वा or dead, प्रियभार्यस्य for him who is fond of his wife, रामस्य of Rama, निवेदयितुम् to report, न क्षमम् not proper.

"Whether Janaki is lost or irretrievable or dead is not known The news should not be reported to Rama, who is very fond of his wife.
निवेद्यमाने दोषस्स्याद्दोषस्स्यादनिवेदने।।5.13.18।।

कथं नु खलु कर्तव्यं विषमं प्रतिभाति मे।


निवेद्यमाने by informing this, दोषः mistake, स्यात् may be, अनिवेदने by not informing, दोषः mistake, स्यात् may be, कथम् how, कर्तव्यं नु खलु what to do, मे to me, विषमम् difficult, प्रतिभाति appears.

"To carry or not to carry this news to Rama would be a mistake. What shall I do? I am facing a tough situation.
अस्मिन्नेवंगते कार्ये प्राप्तकालं क्षमं च किम्।।5.13.19।।

भवेदिति मतं भूयो हनुमान्प्रविचारयत्।


अस्मिन् in this, कार्ये in this regard, एवं गते when things took such a turn, प्राप्तकालम् right time, क्षमम् proper, किम् what, भवेत् will be, इति thus, मतम् opinion, हनुमान् Hanuman, भूयः once again, प्रविचारयत् deliberated.

"I wonder what the right course of action is when things have taken such a turn? What is proper for me to do? Hanuman once again deliberated.
यदि सीतामदृष्ट्वाऽहं वानरेन्द्रपुरीमितः।।5.13.20।।

गमिष्यामि ततः को मे पुरुषार्थो भविष्यति।


अहम् I, सीताम् Sita, अदृष्ट्वा without seeing, इतः from here, वानरेन्द्रपुरीम् city of vanaras, गमिष्यामि I reach, यदि if, ततः then, कः what (has been accomplished), पुरुषार्थः accomplishment, भविष्यति will happen.

"If I return to Kishkinda without seeing Sita of what use is my effort? What have I accomplished? What will happen? (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha are the four Purusharthas or accomplishments in life)
ममेदं लङ्घनं व्यर्थं सागरस्य भविष्यति।।5.13.21।।

प्रवेशश्चैव लङ्कायाः राक्षसानां च दर्शनम्।


मम my, इदम् this, सागरस्य of the ocean, लङ्घनम् crossing, लङ्कायाः of Lanka, प्रवेशश्च entry, राक्षसानाम् of ogres, दर्शनम् seeing, व्यर्थम् futile, भविष्यति would be.

"My crossing the ocean, my entry into Lanka and my survey of the demons are all futile.
किं मां वक्ष्यति सुग्रीवो हरयो वा समागताः।।5.13.22।।

किष्किन्धां समनुप्राप्तं तौ वा दशरथात्मजौ।


किष्किन्धाम् at Kishkinda, समनुप्राप्तम् reached, माम् to me, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, किम् what, वक्ष्यति
he says, समागताः collected, हरयः वा even vanaras, तौ those two, दशरथात्मजौ वा sons of Dasaratha.

"What will Sugriva or even the vanaras and the two sons of Dasaratha say when I reach Kishkinda?
गत्वा तु यदि काकुत्स्थं वक्ष्यामि परमप्रियम्।।5.13.23।।

न दृष्टेति मया सीता ततस्तक्ष्यति जीवितम्।


गत्वा after reaching, काकुत्स्थम् Kakutstha, मया by me, सीता Sita, न दृष्टा not seen, इति like this, परम् most, अप्रियम् unpleasant, वक्ष्यामि यदि if I say, ततः then, जीवितम् life, त्यक्ष्यति he will give up.

"If I report the most unpleasant news that Sita was not found, Rama will give up his life.
परुषं दारुणं क्रूरं तीक्ष्णमिन्द्रियतापनम्।।5.13.24।।

सीतानिमित्तं दुर्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा स न भविष्यति।


परुषम् harsh, दारुणम् dreadful, क्रूरम् cruel, तीक्ष्णम् sharp, इन्द्रियतापनम् that which can scorch senses, सीतानिमित्तम् about Sita, दुर्वाक्यम् unwelcome words, श्रुत्वा after hearing, सः Rama, न भविष्यति will not live.

तं तु कृच्छ्रगतं दृष्ट्वा पञ्चत्वगतमानसम्।।5.13.25।।

भृशानुरक्तो मेधावी न भविष्यति लक्ष्मणः।


कृच्छ्रगतम् in painful state, पञ्चत्वगतमानसम् one who has almost given his life, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा seeing, भृशानुरक्तः deeply devoted, मेधावी wise, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, न भविष्यति will not survive.

"Seeing Rama in such a painful state, wise Lakshmana who has given his life to Rama, to whom he is deeply devoted will also not survive.
विनष्टौ भ्रातरौ श्रुत्वा भरतोऽपि मरिष्यति।।5.13.26।।

भरतं च मृतं दृष्ट्वा शत्रुघ्नो न भविष्यति।


भ्रातरौ both brothers, विनष्टौ dead, श्रुत्वा after hearing, भरतोऽपि Bharata also, मरिष्यति will die, मृतम् dead, भरतम् of Bharata, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, शत्रुघ्नश्च even Satrughna, न भविष्यति will not live.

"On hearing the death of both the brothers Bharata will also die. On seeing this Satrughna will also not live.
पुत्रान्मृतान्समीक्ष्याथ न भविष्यन्ति मातरः।।5.13.27।।

कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च कैकेयी च न संशयः।


अथ then, मातरः mothers, कौसल्या च and Kausalya, सुमित्रा च even Sumitra, कैकेयी च even Kaikeyi, पुत्रान् of sons, मृतान् of their death, समीक्ष्य on seeing, न भविष्यन्ति will not be able to live, संशयः न no doubt.

कृतज्ञस्सत्यसन्धश्च सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः।।5.13.28।।

रामं तथा गतं दृष्ट्वा ततस्त्यक्ष्यति जीवितम्।


कृतज्ञः grateful, सत्यसन्धः truthful, प्लवगाधिपः leader of monkeys, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, तथा likewise, गतम् gone, रामम् Rama, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, ततः then, जीवितम् life, त्यक्ष्यति will give up.

"On seeing that Rama has ended his life, the grateful and truthful monkey leader,
Sugriva will give up his life.
दुर्मना व्यथिता दीना निरानन्दा तपस्विनी।।5.13.29।।

पीडिता भर्तृशोकेन रुमा त्यक्ष्यति जीवितम्।


भर्तृशोकेन on account of her husband's grief, पीडिता tormented, दुर्मनाः disheartened, व्यथिता pained, दीना dejected, निरानन्दा unhappy, तपस्विनी helpless, रुमा Ruma, जीवितम् life, त्यक्ष्यति will give up.

"Distressed, disheartened, pained and grieved on account of her husband's death, the virtuous lady Ruma (wife of Sugriva) will be unhappy and die.
वालिजेन तु दुःखेन पीडिता शोककर्शिता।।5.13.30।।

पञ्चत्वं च गते राज्ञि ताराऽपि न भविष्यति।


वालिजेन caused by Vali, दुःखेन by sorrow, पीडिता troubled, शोककर्शिता fertured with grief, तारापि Tara too, राज्ञि when the king, पञ्चत्वम् gone to other world, गते having gone, न भविष्यति will not live

"Tara who is troubled by Vali's death and tortured with grief will not live when king Sugriva dies.
मातापित्रोर्विनाशेन सुग्रीवव्यसनेन च।।5.13.31।।

कुमारोऽप्यङ्गदः कस्माद्धारयिष्यति जीवितम्।


कुमारः prince, अङ्गदोऽपि Angada also, मातापित्रोः of his mother and father, विनाशेन by death, सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, व्यसनेन by calamity, जीवितम् life, कस्मात् why, धारयिष्यति will retain.

"On account of his parents death and also because of Sugriva's calamity, Angada will give up his life.
भर्तृजेन तु दुःखेन ह्यभिभूता वनौकसः।।5.13.32।।

शिरांस्यभिहनिष्यन्ति तलैर्मुष्टिभिरेव च।


नौकसः vanaras, भर्तृजेन on account of the events affecting their king, दुःखेन by grief, अभिभूताः overpowered, तलैः with their palms, मुष्टिभिरेव च and with their fists, शिरांसि their heads, अभिहनिष्यन्ति will hit themselves.

"The grief due to the death of their king will make the vanaras hit their heads with their palms and fists.
सान्त्वेनानुप्रदानेन मानेन च यशस्विना।।5.13.33।।

लालिताः कपिराजेन प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यन्ति वानराः।


यशस्स्विना by the illustrious one, कपिराजेन by the king of vanaras, सान्त्वेन by good words, अनुप्रदानेन by offering gifts, मानेन by respecting, लालिताः reared, वानराः vanaras, प्राणान् life, त्यक्ष्यन्ति will give up.

"The vanaras who were reared by the king's kind words, gifts and care will give up their life.
न वनेषु न शैलेषु न निरोधेषु वा पुनः।।5.13.34।।

क्रीडामनुभविष्यन्ति समेत्य कपिकुञ्जराः।


कपिकुञ्जराः chiefs among vanaras, समेत्य collected together, वनेषु in the forest, क्रीडाम् play, न अनुभविष्यन्ति will not enjoy, शैलेषु on the mountains, न निरोधेषु वा or in the caves, पुनः again, न not.

"The chiefs among vanaras together will not enjoy their life in the forest or mountains or caves.
सपुत्रदारास्सामात्या भर्तृव्यसनपीडिताः।।5.13.35।।

शैलाग्रेभ्यः पतिष्यन्ति समेषु विषमेषु च।


सपुत्रदाराः with sons and wives, सामात्याः with ministers together, भर्तृव्यसनपीडिताः tormented by the suffering of their king's death, शैलाग्रेभ्यः from the mountain peaks, समेषु on the plains, विषमेषु च and on uneven grounds, पतिष्यन्ति will fall (drop down).

"Tormented by their king's death the vanaras with their wives, sons and ministers will drop down from the mountain peaks on the rough ground and die.
विषमुद्बन्धनं वापि प्रवेशं ज्वलनस्य वा।।5.13.36।।

उपवासमथो शस्त्रं प्रचरिष्यन्ति वानराः।


वानराः vanaras, विषम् poison, उद्बन्धनं वापि or by hanging, ज्वलनस्य in the fire, प्रवेशं वा entering, उपवासम् by fasting, अथो or, शस्त्रम् weapon, प्रचरिष्यन्ति they will use to put an end.

"The vanaras will put an end to their lives by poisoning or by hanging or by selfimmolation or by killing themselves with weapons or by fasting unto death.
घोरमारोदनं मन्ये गते मयि भविष्यति।।5.13.37।।

इक्ष्वाकुकुलनाशश्च नाशश्चैव वनौकसाम्।


मयि गते when I go, इक्ष्वाकुकुलनाशश्च destruction of the Ikshvakus, वनौकसाम् of vanaras, नाशश्चैव destruction, घोरम् dreadful, आरोदनम् weeping, भविष्यति will be, मन्ये I think.

"If I go there (without finding Sita), it will cause destruction of the Ikshvakus and vanaras would weep. It would be dreadful.
सोऽहं नैव गमिष्यामि किष्किन्धां नगरीमितः।।5.13.38।।

न च शक्ष्याम्यहं द्रष्टुं सुग्रीवं मैथिलीं विना।


अहम् I, इतः from here, किष्किन्धां नगरीम् to the city of Kishkinda, नैव गमिष्यामि I will not go, अहम् I, मैथिलीं Mythili, विना without, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, द्रष्टुम् to see, न च शक्ष्यामि not possible for me.

"I will not go to the city of Kishkinda from here or to Sugriva without finding Mythili. It will not be possible for me to face him.
मय्यगच्छति चेहस्थे धर्मात्मानौ महारथौ।।5.13.39।।

आशया तौ धरिष्येते वानराश्च मनस्विनः।


मयि when I, अगच्छति not go, इहस्थे stay here, धर्मात्मानौ righteous selves, महारथौ great warriors, तौ both, आशया with hope, धरिष्येते both will survive, मनस्विनः highsouled, वानराश्च vanaras also.

Both the highsouled warrior princes treading a righteous path as well as the vanaras will survive with a hope of my return if I stay back.
हस्तादानो मुखादानो नियतो वृक्षमूलिकः।।5.13.40।।

वानप्रस्थो भविष्यामि ह्यदृष्ट्वा जनकात्मजाम्।

सागरानूपजे देशे बहुमूलफलोदके।।5.13.41।।


जनकात्मजाम् Janaka's daughter, अदृष्ट्वा by not seeing, हस्तादानः food available to hand, मुखादानः and mouth, नियतः strictly, बहुमूलफलोदके filled with fruits roots and water, सागरानूपजे on the shore of the sea, देशे here, वृक्षमूलिकः surviving on roots of trees, वानप्रस्थः like a hermit, भविष्यामि I will be.

"If Janaki is not found I will stay here and live like a hermit subsisting on whatever is available on this sea shore, which has abundance of roots, fruits and water.
चितां कृत्वा प्रवेक्ष्यामि समिद्धमरणीसुतम्।

उपविष्टस्य वा सम्यग्लिङ्गिनीं साधयिष्यतः।।5.13.42।।

शरीरं भक्षयिष्यन्ति वायसाः श्वापदानि च।


चिताम् pyre, कृत्वा having made, समिद्धम् lit, अरणीसुतम् fire sticks (fire), प्रवेक्ष्यामि will enter, वा or else, उपविष्टस्य seated here, लिङ्गिनीम् starving, साधयिष्यतः fast unto death, शरीरम् body, वायसाः crows, श्वापदानि च wild beasts, भक्षयिष्यन्ति will eat.

"I will prepare a pyre and enter the fire so that sea waves wash off the ashes or crows and beasts will eat up my body while i sit fasting unto death.
इदं महर्षिभिर्दृष्टं निर्याणमिति मे मतिः।।5.13.43।।

सम्यगापः प्रवेक्ष्यामि न चेत्पश्यामि जानकीम्।


इदम् this, महर्षिभिः by ascetics, दृष्टम् seen, निर्याणम् ending of life, इति like this, मे my, मतिः thought, जानकीम् Janaki, न चेत्पश्यामि if I am not able to see, सम्यक् right, आपः water, प्रवेक्ष्यामि will enter.

"I shall enter water and drown myself to death if I am not able to find Janaki. I think this way of ending life has been suggested by great ascetics.
सुजातमूला सुभगा कीर्तिमाला यशस्विनी।।5.13.44।।

प्रभग्ना चिररात्रीयं मम सीतामपश्यतः।


सीताम् Sita, अपश्यतः I could not find, मम for me, चिररात्रीयं this long night, सुजातमूला started well, सुभगा lovely, यशस्विनी glorious one, कीर्तिमाला famous one, प्रभग्ना is wasted.

My glory which had a good start (in the form of bringing Rama to Sugriva) and brought fortune to Sugriva and fame to me has been snapped as I could not find Sita.
तापसो वा भविष्यामि नियतो वृक्षमूलिकः।।5.13.45।।

नेतः प्रतिगमिष्यामि तामदृष्ट्वासितेक्षणाम्।


नियतः strictly, वृक्षमूलिकः resting under the tree, तापसो वा or an ascetic, भविष्यामि I will remain, असितेक्षणाम् blackeyed, ताम् her, अदृष्टवा without seeing, इतः from here, न प्रतिगमिष्यामि I will not go back.

"I will remain an ascetic and do penance under the tree practising selfcontrol and not go back without seeing the blackeyed Sita.
यदीतः प्रतिगच्छामि सीतामनधिगम्य ताम्।।5.13.46।।

अङ्गदस्सह तैस्सर्वैर्वानरैर्न भविष्यति।


ताम् her, सीताम् Sita, अनधिगम्य without finding, इतः from this place, प्रतिगच्छामि यदि if I go back, सर्वैः by all, तै: by those, वानरैः सह along with vanaras, अङ्गदः Angada, न भविष्यति will not live.

"Besides, if I go back without finding Sita all the vanaras including Angada will die.
विनाशे बहवो दोषा जीवन् भद्राणि पश्यति।।5.13.47।।

तस्मात्प्राणान् धरिष्यामि ध्रुवो जीवितसङ्गमः।


विनाशे by comitting suicide, बहवः many, दोषाः sins, जीवन् by living, भद्राणि auspicious events, पश्यति can be experienced, तस्मात् therefore, प्राणान् life, धरिष्यामि I will sustain, जीवितसङ्गमः only a living person, ध्रुवः is certain

"If I commit suicide, I will earn numerous sins. By being alive, I can witness auspicious events. Therefore, I will live, for, happiness can come only to the living.
एवं बहुविधं दुःखं मनसा धरायन्मुहुः।।5.13.48।।

नाध्यगच्छत्तदा पारं शोकस्य कपिकुञ्चरः।


कपिकुञ्जरः the elephant among monkeys, एवम् that way, बहुविधम् in many ways, दुःखम् grief, मुहुः over and over, मनसा in mind, धारयन् by holding, तदा then, शोकस्य sorrow, पारम् long, नाध्यगच्छात् did not reach of the end.

The elephant among monkeys (Hanuman) worrying over and over again, holding his head for long could not reach the end of his grief.
रावणं वा वधिष्यामि दशग्रीवं महाबलम्।।5.13.49।।

काममस्तु हृता सीता प्रत्याचीर्णं भविष्यति।


वा or, दशग्रीवम् tenheaded one, महाबलम् endowed with great strength, रावणम् Ravana, वधिष्यामि I will, हृता dead, सीता Sita, कामम् अस्तु desire will be fulfilled, प्रत्याचीर्णम् fitting reply, भविष्यति will be.

"I will kill Ravana, this mighty, tenheaded demon. Sita was indeed carried away by him. This (killing him) can be a fitting reply to his evil action. My desire would be fulfilled.
अथवैनं समुत्क्षिप्य उपर्युपरि सागरम्।।5.13.50।।

रामायोपहरिष्यामि पशुं पशुपतेरिव।


अथवा otherwise, एनम् him, सागरम् उपर्युपरि over the ocean, समुत्क्षिप्य by lifting across (like a sacrificial prey), पशुपतेः to lord Siva, पशुमिव like a bull, रामाय to Rama, उपहरिष्यामि I shall offer.

"Or else, I shall carry him across the sea and put him before Rama like a bull as if he is a sacrificial prey to lord Siva."
इति चिन्तां समापन्नः सीतामनधिगम्य ताम्।।5.13.51।।

ध्यानशोकपरीतात्मा चिन्तयामास वानरः।


वानरः vanara, ताम् her, सीताम् Sita, अनधिगम्य unable to find, इति thus, चिन्ताम् worry, समापन्नः distressed, ध्यानशोकपरीतात्मा whose mind was overcome with anxiety, चिन्तयामास started thinking further.

Distressed over his inability to find Sita, Hanuman's mind was overcome with anxiety and he started thinking further.
यावत्सीतां हि पश्यामि रामपत्नीं यशस्विनीम्।।5.13.52।।

तावदेतां पुरीं लङ्कां विचिनोमि पुनः पुनः।


रामपत्नीम् Rama's wife, यशस्विनीम् famed, सीताम् Sita, यावत् until, पश्यामि I see, तावत् till then, एताम् this, लङ्कां पुरीम् city of Lanka, पुनः पुनः again and again, विचिनोमि I will keep searching.

"Till I find the virtuous Sita, wife of Rama in this Lanka, I shall keep searching everywhere again and again.
सम्पातिवचनाच्चापि रामं यद्यानयाम्यहम्।।5.13.53।।

अपश्यन् राघवो भार्यां निर्धहेत्सर्ववानरान्।


सम्पातिवचनात् on Sampati's words, अहम् I, रामम् Rama, आनयामि यदि if I had brought, राघवः Raghava, भार्याम् wife, अपश्यन् unable to see, सर्ववानरान् all vanaras, निर्दहेत् would have burnt.

"Had I brought Raghava following the words of Sampati, Rama would have burnt all vanaras unable to find his wife.
इहैव नियताहारो वत्स्यामि नियतेन्द्रियः।।5.13.54।।

न मत्कृते विनश्येयुः सर्वे ते नरवानराः।


नियताहारः restricting food, नियतेन्द्रियः controlling senses, इहैव here itself, वत्स्यामि I will stay, मत्कृते for my fault, ते those, नरवानराः naras and vanaras, न विनश्येयुः will not perish.

"I will stay here itself, restricting my food and controlling my senses. Let not men and monkeys perish for my fault.
अशोकवनिका चेयं दृश्यते या महाद्रुमा।।5.13.55।।

इमामधिगमिष्यामि न हीयं विचिता मया।


महाद्रुमा huge trees, या such, इयम् this, अशोकवनिका Ashoka grove, दृश्यते is seen, इमाम् there, अधिगमिष्यामि I will go, इयम् here, मया by me, न विचिता हि not looked for.

"Here is the Ashoka grove with huge trees. I will go there. I have not looked for her in this place.
वसून्रुद्रांस्तथाऽदित्यानश्विनौ मरुतोऽपि च।।5.13.56।।

नमस्कृत्वा गमिष्यामि रक्षसां शोकवर्धनः।


वसून् Vasus, रुद्रान् Rudras, तथा likewise, आदित्यान् Adityas, अश्विनौ Aswinis, मरुतोऽपि च Maruts also, नमस्कृत्वा after offering salutations, रक्षसाम् of demons, शोकवर्धनः increase grief, गमिष्यामि will go.

"I shall offer salutations to Vasus, Rudras Adityas and Aswinis and proceed to increase (cause) the sorrow of the demons. (There are eight Vasus, eleven Rudras, twelve Adityas, two Ashwins and fortynine Windgods).
जित्वा तु राक्षसान् सर्वानिक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दिनीम्।।5.13.57।।

सम्प्रदास्यामि रामाय यथा सिद्धिं तपस्विने।


सर्वान् all, राक्षसान् ogres, जित्वा तु having conquered, इक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दिनीम् delight of Ikshvaku family, तपस्विने for the ascetic, सिद्धिं यथा an offering like, रामाय to Rama, सम्प्रदास्यामि I will offer.

"I will conquer all the ogres and pass them to Sita, the delight of the Ikshvaku family as an offering and give Rama to her as the fruit of her austerities."
सः मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा चिन्तावग्रथितेन्द्रियः।।5.13.58।।

उदतिष्ठन्महातेजा हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः।


महातेजाः brilliant, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, सः हनुमान् Hanuman, चिन्तावग्रथितेन्द्रियः with senses overwhelmed by worries, मुहूर्तमिव for a while, ध्यात्वा after reflecting, उदतिष्ठत् got up.

The brilliant son of the Windgod, Hanuman, whose senses were overwhelmed with worries, regained his senses in a short while and got up.
नमोऽस्तु रामाय सलक्ष्मणाय देव्यै च तस्यै जनकात्मजायै।

नमोऽस्तु रुद्रेंद्रयमानिलेभ्यो नमोऽस्तु चन्द्रार्कमरुद्गणेभ्यः।।5.13.59।।


सलक्ष्मणाय along with Lakshmana, रामाय to Rama, नमः salutations, अस्तु I offer, देव्यै to the divine lady, तस्यै to her, जनकात्मजायै च to Janaka's daughter, रुद्रेन्द्रयमानिलेभ्यः to Rudra, Indra, Yama and Vayu, नमः salutations, अस्तु be, चन्द्रार्कमरुद्गणेभ्यः Sun, Moon and Marutas, नमः salutations, अस्तु I offer.

"My salutations to Lakshmana, Rama and divine daughter of Janaka. Salutations to Rudra, Indra, Yama and Vayu. Salutations to Sun, Moon and Maruts"
स तेभ्यस्तु नमस्कृत्य सुग्रीवाय च मारुतिः।

दिशस्सर्वास्समालोक्य ह्यशोकवनिकां प्रति।।5.13.60।।


स: मारुतिः that son of the Windgod, तेभ्यः to them, नमस्कृत्य having saluted, सुग्रीवाय च to Sugriva, सर्वाः all, दिशः quarters, समालोक्य looking at, अशोकवनिकाम् Ashoka grove, प्रति towards.

Having offered salutations to all gods as well as to Sugriva, he looked at all quarters and left for the Ashoka grove.
स गत्वा मनसा पूर्वमशोकवनिकां शुभाम्।

उत्तरं चिन्तयामास वानरो मारुतात्मजः।।5.13.61।।


मारुतात्मजः Hanuman, सः वानरः the vanara, मनसा in his mind, पूर्वम् earlier, शुभाम् auspicious, अशोकवनिकाम् grove of Ashoka, गत्वा after going, उत्तरम् again, चिन्तयामास started thinking.

Hanuman started thinking again about his task after reaching the auspicious Ashoka grove.
ध्रुवं तु रक्षोबहुला भविष्यति वनाकुला।

अशोकवनिका पुण्या सर्वसंस्कारसंस्कृता।।5.13.62।।


शोकवनिका Ashoka grove, ध्रुवम् surely, रक्षोबहुला guarded by many demons, वनाकुला with trees, सर्वसंस्कारसंस्कृता carefully tended, पुण्या sacred, भविष्यति it will be.

'This Ashoka grove filled with many trees, guarded by many demons is carefully tended. It must be sacred.
रक्षिणश्चात्र विहिता नूनं रक्षन्ति पादपान्।

भगवानपि सर्वात्मा नातिक्षोभं प्रवाति वै।।5.13.63।।

संक्षिप्तोऽयं मयाऽत्मा च रामार्थे रावणस्य च।


अत्र there, विहिताः posted, रक्षिणश्च guards, पादपान् trees, नूनम् surely, रक्षन्ति they are protecting, सर्वात्मा all pervading, भगवानपि divinity also, नातिक्षोभम् not violent, प्रवाति वै is blowing, मया my, रामार्थे for Rama's sake, रावणस्य च and Ravana also, अयम् this, आत्मा my own self, संक्षिप्तः made small.

"The guards posted there are surely protecting the grove. The divinity pervading all over me (the wind) must also have been controlled as it is also not blowing violently. I have turned my body small for Rama's cause and also to save myself from Ravana.
सिद्धिं मे संविधास्यन्ति देवाः सर्षिगणास्त्विह।।5.13.64।।

ब्रह्मा स्वयंभूर्भगवान् देवाश्चैव दिशन्तु मे।

सिद्धिमग्निश्च वायुश्च पुरुहूतश्च वज्रभृत्।।5.13.65।।

वरुणः पाशहस्तश्च सोमादित्यौ तथैव च।

अश्विनौ च महात्मानौ मरुतः शर्व एव च।।5.13.66।।

सिद्धिं सर्वाणि भूतानि भूतानां चैव यः प्रभुः।

दास्यन्ति मम ये चान्ये ह्यदृष्टाः पथि गोचराः।।5.13.67।।


सर्षिगणाः (स ऋषिगणा:) along with all sages, देवाः gods, इह here, मे to me, सिद्धिंम् success, संविधास्यन्ति will give, स्वयंभूः selfborn, भगवान् god, ब्रह्मा Brahma, देवाश्चैव and also gods, अग्निश्च and Fire, वायुश्च even Wind, वज्रभृत् Indra, the wielder of thunderbolt, पुरूहूतश्च Indra who is invoked several times in sacrifices, पाशहस्तः holding a rope, वरुणश्च Varuna too, तथैव च so also,सोमादित्यौ Moon and Sun, महात्मानौ all great, अश्विनौ च twin Aswinis also, मरुतः Maruts, शर्वः एव च lord Siva, मे to me, सिद्धिम् success, दिशन्तु many give, सर्वाणि all, भूतानि beings, यः whoever, भूतानाम् of creatures, प्रभु: lord, अन्ये other, ये those, अदृष्टाः not seen, पथि on the way, गोचराः creatures moving on earth, मम to me, सिद्धिम् success, दास्यन्ति will ordain.

May all sages, gods, the selfborn Brahma, Windgod, Indra, the wielder of thunderbolt whose name is invoked in sacrifices, Yama, who carries a rope, Varuna give success and Lord Siva help me. May the Sun, Moon, Aswinis Marutas assist me. May the gods of the quarters and the lord of all beings help me to succeed. May those whom I could not see also bring success to me.
तदुन्नसं पाण्डुरदन्तमव्रणं शुचिस्मितं पद्मपलाशलोचनम्।

द्रक्ष्ये तदार्यावदनं कदान्वहं प्रसन्नताराधिपतुल्यदर्शनम्।।5.13.68।।


उन्नसम् with high nose, पाण्डुरदन्तम् with white teeth, अव्रणम् with no wounds, शुचिस्मितम् with pleasing smile, पद्मपलाशलोचनम् eyes like lotus petals, प्रसन्नताराधिपतुल्यदर्शनम् who appears like the pleasant Moon, तत् that, तदार्यावदनम् beautiful face of the noble lady,
अहम् I, कदा when, द्रक्ष्ये नु will I see.

'Oh when and how would I behold that beautiful noble lady of stainless character, with a Moonlike face, prominent nose, white teeth, pleasant smile and with eyes like lotus petals?
क्षुद्रेण पापेन नृशंसकर्मणा सुदारुणालङ्कृतवेषधारिणा।

बलाभिभूता ह्यबला तपस्विनी कथं नु मे दृष्टिपथेऽद्य सा भवेत्।।5.13.69।।
 

क्षुद्रेण by a mean one, पापेन by a sinner, नृशंसकर्मणा a man of cruel deeds, सुदारुणालङ्कृतवेषधारिणा endowed with a dreadful look, बलाभिभूता overpowered by force, तपस्विनी a suffering lady, सा that, अबला weak, अद्य now, मे my, दृष्टिपथे in the range of my view, कथं how, भवेत् नु will I.

"How will I set my eyes on that gentle, frail and suffering thing now, who has been abducted by that mean, cruel sinner of dreadful look?"
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे त्रयोदशस्सर्गः।
Thus ends the thirteenth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
