[Trijata narrates her dream]

इत्युक्तास्सीतया घोरं राक्षस्यः क्रोधमूर्छिताः।

काश्चिज्जग्मुस्तदाख्यातुं रावणस्य तरस्विनः।।5.27.1।।


सीतया by Sita, इति thus, उक्ताः spoken, राक्षस्यः rakshasis, घोरम् of terrible, क्रोधमूर्छिताः overwhelmed with anger, काश्चित् some, तत् that, तरस्विनः of the swift, रावणस्य to Ravana, आख्यातुम् to inform, जग्मुः went

Hearing Sita's words, some terrifying demonesses, overwhelmed with anger, went to inform Ravana, who was quick to act.
ततः सीतामुपागम्य राक्षस्यो घोरदर्शनाः।

पुनः परुषमेकार्थमनर्थार्थमथाब्रुवन्।।5.27.2।।


ततः then, घोरदर्शनाः dreadfullooking, राक्षस्यः demonesses, सीताम् Sita, उपागम्य having reached, अथ and, पुनः once again, अनर्थार्थम् a word leading to terrible consequences, एकार्थम् conveying one meaning, परुषम् harshly, अब्रुवन् spoke.

The dreadfullooking demonesses once again approached Sita and conveyed her categorically in harsh words the terrible consequences (ahead)
अद्येदानीं तवानार्ये सीते पापविनिश्चये।

राक्षस्यो भक्षयिष्यन्ति मांसमेतद्यथासुखम्।।5.27.3।।


अनार्ये vile one, पापविनिश्चये O woman determined in evil ways, सीते O Sita, अद्य today, इदानीम् these, तव your, एतत मांसम् your flesh, राक्षस्यः rakshasa women, यथासुखम् heart's content, भक्षयिष्यन्ति will eat.

"O vile one you are determined in your evil ways. Today these shedemons will eat away your flesh to their heart's content ".
सीतां ताभिरनार्याभिर्दृष्टवा सन्तर्जितां तदा।

राक्षसी त्रिजटा वृद्धा शयाना वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।5.27.4।।


तदा then, अनार्याभिः by ignoble women, ताभिः by them, सन्तर्जिताम् threatened, सीताम् Sita, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, शयाना while lying down, वृद्धा old, त्रिजटा Trijata, राक्षसी a demoness, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Then seeing the ignoble shedemons threatening Sita, an old demoness called Trijata, who was lying down there, said:
आत्मानं खादतानार्या न सीतां भक्षयिष्यथ।

जनकस्य सुतामिष्टां स्नुषां दशरथस्य च।।5.27.5।।


अनार्याः O ignoble ones, आत्मानम् yourselves, खादत devour, जनकस्य Janaka's, इष्टाम् favourite, सुताम् daughter, दशरथस्य Dasaratha's, स्नुषां च and daughterinlaw, सीताम् Sita, न भक्षयिष्यथ do not eat.

"Devour yourselves now, O ignoble ones, if you will. Do not eat Janaka's favourite daughter, the daughterinlaw of Dasaratha.
स्वप्नो ह्यद्य मया दृष्टो दारुणो रोमहर्षणः।

राक्षसानामभावाय भर्तुरस्या भवाय च।।5.27.6।।


अद्य today, दारुणः terrific, रोमहर्षणः horripilating, स्वप्नः dream, राक्षसानाम् all the demons, अभावाय for the destruction, अस्याः her, भर्तुः husband's, भवाय triumph, मया by myself, दृष्टः was seen.

"Tonight I had a terrific, horriplating nightmare in which I saw the annihilation of all demons and the triumph of Sita's husband".
एवमुक्तास्त्रिजटया राक्षस्यः क्रोधमूर्छिताः।

सर्वा एवाब्रुवन्भीतास्त्रिजटां तामिदं वचः।।5.27.7।।
 

त्रिजटया by Trijata, एवम् that way, उक्ताः having been spoken, क्रोधमूर्छिताः overcome by wrath, राक्षस्यः shedemons, सर्वाः एव all of them, भीताः terrified, ताम् her, त्रिजटाम् to Trijata, इदम् this, वचः word, अब्रुवन् spoke.

Seized with fear, the shedemons, overcome with wrath on hearing Trijata's words said to her.
कथयस्व त्वया दृष्टः स्वप्नोऽयं कीदृशो निशि।

तासां श्रुत्वा तु वचनं राक्षसीनां मुखाच्युतम्।।5.27.8।।

उवच वचनं काले त्रिजटा स्वप्नसंश्रितम्।


निशि night, त्वया by you, दृष्टः seen, अयम् this, स्वप्नः dream, कीदृशः what did you see, कथयस्व tell, तासाम् of them, राक्षसीनाम् of shedemons, मुखात् from their mouth, च्युतम् slipped, वचनम् word, श्रुत्वा after hearing, त्रिजटा Trijata, काले early morning time, स्वप्नसंश्रितम् all about the dream, वचनम् words, उवाच spoke.

"O Trijata, tell us the kind of dream you dreamt last night", they insisted. Hearing the words from the mouth of the shedemons, Trijata told them all about her dream.
गजदन्तमयीं दिव्यां शिबिकामन्तरिक्षगाम्।।5.27.9।।

युक्तां हंससहस्रेण स्वयमास्थाय राघवः।

शुक्लमाल्याम्बरधरो लक्ष्मणेन सहागतः।।5.27.10।।


राघवः Rama, शुक्लमाल्याम्बरधरः wearing a garland of white flowers and clad in white attire, गजदन्तमयीम् made of ivory, अन्तरिक्षगाम् coursing through the sky, हंससहस्रेण by a thousand swans, युक्ताम् yoked, शिबिकाम् palanquin, स्वयम् himself, आस्थाय having
ascended, लक्ष्मणेन सह accompanied by Lakshmana, आगतः arrived.

"Rama, in white attire, wearing a garland of white flowers, ascending a palanquin made of ivory drawn by a thousand swans and coursing through the sky with Lakshmana arrived.
स्वप्ने चाद्य मया दृष्टा सीता शुक्लाम्बरावृता।

सागरेण परिक्षिप्तं श्वेतं पर्वतमास्थिता।।5.27.11।।


सीता च Sita also, शुक्लाम्बरावृता wearing white robes, सागरेण by the ocean, परिक्षिप्तम् surrounded by, श्वेतम् white, पर्वतम् mountain, आस्थिता perched, मया by me, अद्य now, स्वप्ने in the dream, दृष्टा was seen.

"I also saw Sita in my dream wearing white robes and perched on a white mountain surrounded by the ocean.
रामेण सङ्गता सीता भास्करेण प्रभा यथा।

राघवश्च मया दृष्टश्चतुर्दष्ट्रं महागजम्।।5.27.12।।

आरूढ श्शैलसङ्काशं चचार सहलक्ष्मणः।


सीता Sita, रामेण with Rama, प्रभा light, भास्करेण with the Sun, यथा like, सङ्गता united, रामश्च Rama also, चतुर्द्रंष्ट्रम् having four tusks, शैलसङ्काशम् resembling a mountain, महगजम् huge elephant, आरूढः ascended, मया by me, दृष्टः seen, सहलक्ष्मणः along with Lakshmana, चचार went.

"Just as light is united with the Sun, I saw Sita united with Rama. I saw Rama with Lakshmana riding a huge, mountainlike elephant having four tusks.
ततस्तौ नरशार्दूलौ दीप्यमानौ स्वतेजसा।।5.27.13।।

शुक्लमाल्याम्बरधरौ जानकीं पर्युपस्थितौ।


ततः then, स्वतेजसा by their selfeffulgence, दीप्यमानौ glowing, शुक्लमाल्याम्बरधरौ wearing white garlands and clothes, तौ both, नरशार्दूलौ tigers among men, जानकीम् Janaki, पर्युपस्थितौ came near.

"Dressed in white garlands and clothes, the two brothers, tigers among men, glowing in their effulgence approached Janaki.
ततस्तस्य नगस्याग्रे ह्याकाशस्थस्य दन्तिनः।।5.27.14।।

भर्त्रा परिगृहीतस्य जानकी स्कन्धमाश्रिता।


ततः then, जानकी Janaki, तस्य of that, नगस्य mountain's, अग्रे front, भर्त्रा by husband, परिगृहीतस्य held, आकाशस्थस्य waiting in the sky, दन्तिनः of the elephant, स्कन्धम् mounted, आश्रिता took seat.

"Then from the front of the mountain Janaki shifted to the back of the elephant held by her husband waiting in the sky.
भर्तुरङ्कात्समुत्पत्य ततः कमललोचना।।5.27.15।।

चन्द्रसूर्यौ मया दृष्टा पाणिना परिमार्जती।


ततः then, कमललोचना lotus eyed Sita, भर्तुः husband's, अङ्कात् from his lap, समुत्पत्य springing up, पाणिना with palms, चन्द्रसूर्यौ Moon and Sun, परिमार्जती as she was caressing, मया me, दृष्टा was seen.

"Then I saw the lotuseyed Sita springing up from the lap of her husband and playfully caressing the Moon and Sun with her palms.
ततस्ताभ्यां कुमाराभ्यामास्थित: स गजोत्तमः।।5.27.16।।

सीतया च विशालाक्ष्या लङ्काया उपरिस्थितः।


ततः then, ताभ्याम् by both of them, कुमाराभ्याम् by both the princes, विशालाक्ष्या largeeyed, सीतया च by Sita, आस्थितः held, सः he, गजोत्तमः best of elephants, लङ्कायाः Lanka's, उपरि
over, स्थितः stood.

"Then the excellent elephant was seen halted in the city of Lanka with both princes and the largeeyed Sita mounted on the elephant.
पाण्डुरर्षभयुक्तेन रथेनाष्टयुजा स्वयम्।।5.27.17।।

इहोपयातः काकुत्स्थ स्सीतया सह भार्यया।


काकुत्स्थ: Rama, भार्यया accompanied by wife, सीतया सह along with Sita, पाण्डुरर्षभयुक्तेन yoked by white oxen, अष्टयुजा eight of them, रथेन by a chariot, स्वयम् himself, इह here, उपयातः came.

"Rama accompanied by his wife Sita came on a chariot yoked to eight white oxen.
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा सीतया सह वीर्यवान्।।5.27.18।।

आरुह्य पुष्पकं दिव्यं विमानं सूर्यसन्निभम्।

उत्तरां दिशमालोक्य जगाम पुरुषोत्तमः।।5.27.19।।


वीर्यवान् valiant, पुरुषोत्तमः foremost of men, भ्रात्रा with his brother, लक्ष्मणेन with Lakshmana, सीतया सह accompanied by Sita, दिव्यम् wonderful, सूर्यसन्निभम् resembling the Sun, पुष्पकं विमानम् Pushpaka chariot, आरुह्य after ascending, उत्तराम् north, दिशम् direction, आलोक्य seeing, जगाम went.

"Valiant Rama, foremost among men, accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and wife Sita went towards the northerly direction in the wonderful Pushpaka chariot that resembled the Sun.
एवं स्वप्ने मया दृष्टो रामो विष्णुपराक्रमः।

लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा सीतया सह राघवः।।5.27.20।।


विष्णुपराक्रमः valiant as Visnu, राघवः Raghava, रामः Rama, भ्रात्रा with his brother, लक्ष्मणेन
also with Lakshmana, सीतया सह accompanied by Sita, स्वप्ने in dream, एवम् in that way, मया by myself, दृष्टः was seen.

"In this way I saw in my dream Rama as valiant as Lord Visnu accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita.
न हि रामो महातेजाश्शक्यो जेतुं सुरासुरैः।

राक्षसैर्वापि चान्यैर्वा स्वर्गः पापजनैरिव।।5.27.21।।


महातेजाः very brilliant, रामः Rama, सुरासुरैः by gods and demons, राक्षसैर्वापि and even by demons, अन्यैर्वा and others also, स्वर्गः heaven, पापजनैरिव like sinners, जेतुम् to win, न शक्यः not possible.

"Just as a sinner cannot attain heaven Rama cannot be won by gods or demons, even rakshasas and others.
रावणश्च मया दृष्टः क्षितौ तैलसमुक्षितः।

रक्तवासाः पिबन्मत्तः करवीरकृतस्रजः।।5.27.22।।


रावणश्च Ravana's, क्षितौ on the ground, तैलसमुक्षितः smeared with oil, रक्तवासाः clad in red clothes, करवीरकृतस्रजः wearing a garland of lilies, पिबन् drinking, मत्तः intoxicated, मया I, दृष्टः was seen.

"I saw the body of Ravana lying on the ground smeared with oil, clad in red, wearing a garland of lilies and intoxicated with drinking.
विमानात्पुष्पकादद्य रावणः पतितो भुवि।

कृष्यमाणः स्त्रिया दृष्टो मुण्डः कृष्णाम्बरः पुनः।।5.27.23।।


अद्य today, पुष्पकात् विमानात् from the Pushpaka chariot, भुवि on earth, पतितः fallen down, मुण्डः with shaven head, कृष्णाम्बरः clad in black clothes, रावणः Ravana, स्त्रिया by a woman, कृष्यमाणः being dragged, पुन: again, दृष्टः saw.

"Tonight I saw (in another dream) Ravana with shaven head, clad in black clothes, fallen down on the ground from the Pushpaka chariot, being dragged by a woman.
रथेन खरयुक्तेन रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनः।

पिपंस्तैलं हसन्नृत्यन् भ्रान्तचित्ताकुलेन्द्रियः।।5.27.24।।


रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनः wearing red garlands and unguents, तैलम् oil, पिबन् drinking, हसन् laughing, नृत्यन् dancing, भ्रान्तचित्ताकुलेन्द्रियः with mind and snses perplexed, खरयुक्तेन yoked to donkeys, रथेन by the chariot.

"He was wearing red garlands and unguents, his body smeared with oil. He was drinking, laughing and dancing, his mind and senses perplexed. He was driving on a chariot yoked to donkeys.
गर्दभेन ययौ शीघ्रं दक्षिणां दिशमास्थितः।

पुनरेव मया दृष्टो रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः।।5.27.25।।

पतितोऽ वाक्चिरा रा भूमौ गर्दभाद्भयमोहितः।


दक्षिणां दिशम् towards southerly direction, आस्थितः started, गर्दभेन after donkey, शीघ्रम् swiftly, ययौ went, राक्षसेश्वरः demon king, रावणः Ravana, भयमोहितः deluded by fear, गर्दभात् of the donkey, अवाक्चिरा: head bent down, पतितः fallen, मया by me, पुनरेव also, दृष्टः saw.

"I saw the demon king Ravana running behind the chariot driven by donkeys in the southerly direction. He was falling with his head bent down and deluded by the fear of the donkey.
सहसोत्थाय संभ्रान्तो भयार्तो मदविह्वलः।।5.27.26।।

उन्मत्त इव दिग्वासा दुर्वाक्यं प्रलपन्बहु।

दुर्गन्धं दुस्सहं घोरं तिमिरं नरकोपमम्।।5.27.27।।

मलपङ्कं प्रविश्याशु मग्नस्तत्र स रावणः।


स रावणः that Ravana, सहसा quickly, उत्थाय got up, संभ्रान्तः bewildered, भयार्तः terrorstricken, मदविह्वलः intoxicated with wine, दिग्वासाः naked (with sky as garment), उन्मत्त: mad, इव like, बहु many, दुर्वाक्यम् bad words, प्रलपन् uttering, दुर्गन्धम् emitting foul smell, दुस्सहम् words of abuse, घोरम् terrific, तिमिरम् dark,नरकोपमम् helllike, मलपङ्कम् pool of filth, प्रविश्य having disappeared, आशु he was, तत्र there, मग्नः drowned.

"I saw Ravana, getting up quickly, in a bewildered state, terrorstricken, totally confused in intoxication. He had gone almost insane, naked uttering words of abuse. Plunged into a pool of filth and emitting foul smell he disappeared into a helllike dark chamber.
कण्ठे बद्ध्वा दशग्रीवं प्रमदा रक्तवासिनी।।5.27.28।।

काली कर्दमलिप्ताङ्गी दिशं याम्यां प्रकर्षति।
 

रक्तवासिनी a woman clad in red clothes, काली a dark one, कर्दमलिप्ताङ्गी a woman smeared with wet mud, प्रमदा woman, दशग्रीवम् tennecked Ravana, कण्ठे neck, बद्ध्वा having bound, याम्यां दिशम् towards the abode of Yama in the southerly direction, प्रकर्षति was dragging.

A dark woman clad in red, body smeared with wet mud was seen dragging the ten-necked Ravana by his neck towards the abode of Yama in the southerly direction.
एवं तत्र मया दृष्टः कुम्भकर्णो निशाचरः।।5.27.29।।

रावणस्य सुतास्सर्वे दृष्टास्तैलसमुक्षिताः।


तत्र there, निशाचरः nightranger, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, मया by me, एवम् in this way, दृष्टः was seen, रावणस्य Ravana's, सुताः sons, सर्वे all, तैलसमुक्षिताः body smeared with oil, दृष्टाः was seen.

"There I saw the nightranger, Kumbhakarna and also Ravana's sons, their bodies smeared with oil.
वराहेण दशग्रीवश्शिंशुमारेण चेन्द्रजित्।।5.27.30।।

उष्ट्रेण कुम्भकर्णश्च प्रयाता दक्षिणां दिशम्।


दशग्रीवः tennecked one, वराहेण by boar, इन्द्रजित् Indrajit, श्शिंशुमारेण च crocodile, कुम्भकर्ण Kumbhakarna, उष्ट्रेण च on a camel, दक्षिणां दिशम् towards the southern direction, प्रयाताः were travelling.

"The tennecked Ravana was seen (this time) riding on a boar, Indrajit on a crocodile and Kumbhakarna on a camel all set towards the southerly direction.
एकस्तत्र मया दृष्टः श्वेतच्छत्रो विभीषणः।।5.27.31।।

शुक्लमाल्याम्बरधरः शुक्लगन्धानुलेपनः।


तत्र there, एकः only one, विभीषणः Vibhishana, श्वेतच्छत्रः with white umbrella, शुक्लमाल्याम्बरधरः wearing white garlands and clothes, शुक्लगन्धानुलेपनः with white sandal paste, मया by me, दृष्टः was seen.

"Only Vibhishana was under a white umbrella clad in white, with white garlands and white sandal paste.
शङ्खदुन्धुभिनिर्घोषैर्नृत्तगीतैरलङ्कृतः।।5.27.32।।

आरुह्य शैलसङ्काशं मेघस्तनितनिस्स्वनम्।

चतुर्दन्तं गजं दिव्यमास्ते तत्र विभीषणः।।5.27.33।।

चतुर्भिस्सचिवैः सार्थं वैहायसमुपस्थितः।


विभीषणः Vibhishana, शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः with sounds of conches and drums, नृत्तगीतैः by dancers and musicians, अलङ्कृतः decorated, शैलसङ्काशम् like the mountain, मेघस्तनितनिस्स्वनम् trumpetting like a thundering cloud, चतुर्दन्तम् of four tusks, दिव्यम् wonderful, गजम् elephant, आरुह्य on ascending, तत्र there, आस्ते stood there, चतुर्भिः four,
सचिवैः सार्थम् with ministers, वैहायसम् in the air, उपस्थितः reached.

"(Hailed by) the sounds of conches and drums, and of musicians and dancers, Vibhishana was seen ascending on to a decorated fourtust elephant which was huge like a mountain and trumpting like a thundering cloud. He stood there along with four ministers and reached the aerial region.
समाजश्च मया दृष्टो गीतवादित्रनिःस्वनः।।5.27.34।।

पिबतां रक्तमाल्यानां रक्षसां रक्तवाससाम्।
 

पिबताम् of those drinking, रक्तमाल्यानाम् of those putting on flower garlands, रक्तवाससाम् of those wearing red clothes, रक्षसाम् of rakshasas, गीतवादित्रनिःस्वनः sound of singing and playing musical instruments, समाजश्च a group, मया by me, दृष्टः was seen.

" A large group of demons was seen collected together, drinking, wearing red garlands and red clothes, singing and playing musical instruments.
लङ्का चेयं पुरी रम्या सवाजिरथकुञ्जराः।।5.27.35।।

सागरे पतिता दृष्टा भग्नगोपुरतोरणा।


रम्या delightful, इयम् this, लङ्का पुरी च city of Lanka, सवाजिरथकुञ्जरा with horses chariots and elephants, भग्नगोपुरतोरणा crumbling archways and towers, सागरे in the ocean, पतिता fallen, दृष्टा seen.

"I saw this delightful Lanka teeming with horses, chariots and elephants, archways and towers crumbling and falling into the ocean.
लङ्का दृष्टा मया स्वप्ने रावणेनाभिरक्षिता।।5.27.36।।

दग्धा रामस्य दूतेन वानरेण तरस्विना।
 

रावणेन by Ravana, अभिरक्षिता protected, लङ्का Lanka, रामस्य Rama's, दूतेन by a messenger, तरस्विना by powerful, वानरेण by a vanara, दग्धा burnt, मया by me, स्वप्ने in the dream, दृष्टा seen.

In my dream I saw this city of Lanka protected by Ravana burnt down by a powerful vanara, a messenger of Rama.
पीत्वा तैलं प्रनृत्ताश्च प्रहसन्त्यो महास्वनाः।।5.27.37।।

लङ्कायां भस्मरूक्षायां सर्वा राक्षसस्त्रियः।
 

भस्मरूक्षायाम् in a dry place turned into ashes, लङ्कायाम् in this Lanka, सर्वाः all, राक्षसस्त्रियः demonesses, तैलम् oil, पीत्वा after drinking, प्रहसन्त्यः laughing away, महास्वनाः shouting in a loud voice, प्रनृत्ताः च danced.

"All the demonesses in the city of Lanka which had turned dry, reduced to ashes, were dancing, laughing and shouting loudly drunk with oil..
कुम्भकर्णादयश्चेमे सर्वे राक्षसपुङ्गवाः।।5.27.38।।

रक्तं निवसनं गृह्य प्रविष्टा गोमयह्रदे।


कुम्भकर्णादयः Kumbhakarna and others, इमे these, सर्वे राक्षसपुङ्गवाः all demon leaders, रक्तम् red coloured, निवसनम् clothes, गृह्य wearing, गोमयह्रदे in a pool of cowdung, प्रविष्टाः entered.

"Kumbhakarna and other demon leaders wearing red clothes entered into a pool of cow dung.
अपगच्छत नश्यध्वं सीतामाप्नोति राघवः।।5.27.39।।

घातयेत्परमामर्षी युष्मान्सार्थं हि राक्षसैः।


अपगच्छत go away from here, नश्यध्वम् you will be destroyed, राघवः Raghava, सीताम् Sita, आप्नोति he will secure, परमामर्षी a very angry man, राक्षसैः सार्थम् along with the demons totally, युष्मान् you, घातयेत् will kill.

"(Therefore) go away from here. You will be totally destroyed by Rama who will secure his wife and will kill all of you along with others in great anger.
प्रियां बहुमतां भार्यां वनवासमनुव्रताम्।।5.27.40।।

भर्त्सितां तर्जितां वापि नानुमंस्यति राघवः।


राघवः Rama, प्रियाम् his beloved, बहुमताम् highly respected one, वनवासम् exile in the forest, अनुव्रताम् followed, भार्याम् wife, भर्त्सिताम् abused, तर्जितां वापि or threatened, नानुमंस्यति he will not approve.

"Rama will not approve of any one abusing or threatening his venerable, beloved wife, who had led a life of exile with him.
तदलं क्रूरवाक्यैश्च सान्त्वमेवाभिधीयताम्।।5.27.41।।

अभियाचाम वैदेहीमेतद्धि मम रोचते।


तत् then, क्रूरवाक्यैः cruel taunts, अलम् enough, सान्त्वमेव peacefully, अभिधीयताम् it may be said, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, अभियाचाम we will beg, एतद्धि this itself, मे to me, रोचते is liked.

"Give up these cruel taunts. Speak to her in a cordial manner. We will beg Vaidehi's forgiveness. I like this kind of action.
यस्यामेवंविधः स्वप्नो दुःखितायां प्रदृश्यते।।5.27.42।।

सा दुःखैर्विविधैर्मुक्ता प्रियं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम्।


यस्याम् when any woman, दुःखितायाम् when she is sorrowful, एवंविधः this kind of, स्वप्नः dream, प्रदृश्यते is seen, सा she, विविधैः with all kinds of, दुःखैः sorrows, मुक्ता she is relieved, अनुत्तमम् supreme, प्रियम् joy, प्राप्नोति will attain.

"When any demoness in a sorrowful state dreams this kind of dream, she will be relieved of sorrow and will obtain supreme joy.
भर्त्सितामपि याचध्वं राक्षस्यः किं विवक्षया।।5.27.43।।

राघवाद्धि भयं घोरं राक्षसानामुपस्थितम्।


राक्षस्यः O demonesses, भर्त्सितामपि even if she is threatened this way, याचध्वम् beg her, किम् विवक्षया where is the need to say something, राक्षसानाम् of demons, राघवात् from Rama, घोरम् terrific, भयम् fear, उपस्थितम् will come.

"O demonesses beg her (pardon) now even though you had threatened her earlier. Where is the need to hesitate? There is cause for concern for demons from Rama.
प्रणिपातप्रसन्ना हि मैथिली जनकात्मजा।।5.27.44।।

अलमेषा परित्रातुं राक्षस्यो महतो भयात्।


राक्षस्यः O shedemons, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, एषा this, मैथिली Mythili, प्रणिपातप्रसन्ना while pleased with your salutations, महतः great, भयात् fear, परित्रातुम् to save, अलम् able.

"O shedemons, this Janaka's daughter from Mithila who is capable of protecting you against great dangers will be pleased by your submission.
अपि चास्या विशालाक्ष्या न किंचिदुपलक्षये।।5.27.45।।

विरूपमपि चाङ्गेषु सुसूक्ष्ममपि लक्षणम्।


अपि च and not only that, विशालाक्ष्याः of the largeeyed one, अस्याः her, अङ्गेषु in her limbs, सुसूक्ष्ममपि even a little, विरूपम् distortioninauspiciousness, लक्षणम् sign, किञ्चिदपि even a little, न उपलक्षये I do not see.

"Look at the signs on her body. There is not a little inauspiciousness in the limbs of the largeeyed princess from Mithila.
छायावैगुण्यमात्रं तु शङ्के दुःखमुपस्थितम्।।5.27.46।।

अदुःखार्हामिमां देवीं वैहायसमुपस्थिताम्।
 

छायावैगुण्यमात्रं तु only a change in her complexion, वैहायसम् is changed, उपस्थिताम् which she has, अदुःखार्हाम् not deserve to suffer, इमाम् this, देवीम् this queen, दुःखम् grief, उपस्थितम् has befallen, शङ्के I think.

A great suffering has befallen a lady who does not deserve to suffer. Therefore, a change in her complexion has occured.
अर्थसिद्धिं तु वैदेह्याः पश्याम्यहमुपस्थिताम्।।5.27.47।।

राक्षसेन्द्रविनाशं च विजयं राघवस्य च।


अहम् I, वैदेह्याः for Vaidehi, अर्थसिद्धिं तु fulfilment, उपस्थिताम् approaching, पश्यामि I can see, राक्षसेन्द्रविनाशं च the destruction of the demon king, राघवस्य for Raghava, विजयं च success.

"I see the day of fulfilment for Vaidehi has drawn near. I can also foresee the destruction of the demon king and the triumph of Rama.
निमित्तभूतमेतत्तु श्रोतुमस्या महत्प्रियम्।।5.27.48।।

दृश्यते च स्फुरच्चक्षुः पद्मपत्रमिवायतम्।


अस्याः her, महत् great, प्रियम् good news, श्रोतुम् to hear, निमित्तभूतम् has served as an augery, स्पुरत् throbbing, एतत् this, पद्मपत्रमिव like lotus petals, आयतम् large, चक्षुः eyes, दृश्यते is seen.

"This dream indeed served as an augery for good news about her. Look, her (left) eye which is large like a lotus petal is throbbing.
ईषच्छ हृषितो वास्या दक्षिणाया ह्यदक्षिणः।।5.27.49।।

अकस्मादेव वैदेह्या बाहुरेकः प्रकम्पते।


दक्षिणायाः of a capable lady, अस्याः her, वैदेह्याः Vaidehi's, अदक्षिणः that left, एकः बाहुः that shoulder alone, अकस्मादेव suddenly, हृषितः it may be feeling, ईषत् a little bit, प्रकम्पते is throbbing.

"The left shoulder of this great Vaidehi has started suddenly throbbing, indicating that she is feeling a bit happy.
करेणुहस्तप्रतिम स्सव्यश्चोरुरनुत्तमः।।5.27.50।।

वेपमानः सूचयति राघवं पुरतः स्थितम्।


करेणुहस्तप्रतिमः comparable to a female elephant's trunk, अनुत्तमः excellent, सव्यः the left one, ऊरुः thigh, वेपमानः while trembling, राघवम् Ragahva, पुरतः city, स्थितम् standing, सूचयति as though indicating.

"Her excellent left thigh, comparable to a female elephant's trunk is trembling, as though indicating that Rama is standing in her presence.
पक्षी च शाखानिलयं प्रविष्टः

पुनः पुनश्चोत्तमसान्त्ववादी।

सुस्वागतां वाचमुदीरयानः पुनः

पुनश्चोदयतीव हृष्टः।।5.27.51।।


पक्षी च a bird, शाखानिलयम् on the branches, प्रविष्टः entered, पुनः once again, पुनश्च again and again, उत्तमसान्त्वादी the bird which utters excellent sweet notes, सुस्वागतम् वाचम् a happy tiding, उदीरयानः while expressing, हृष्टः joyous, पुनः पुनः again and again, चोदयतीव is as though prompting.

"One can see the bird which utters excellent sweet notes indicating happy tidings, entering again and again the foliage of the tree, a delightful bird, as if prompting Sita again and again to rejoice.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे सप्तविंशस्सर्गः।
Thus ends the twentyseventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
