[Hanuman apprises Sri Rama of Sita's presence under the Simsupa tree surrounded by demonesses and presents the Chudamani to Rama in the presence of Sugriva.]

ततः प्रस्रवणं शैलं ते गत्वा चित्रकाननम्।

प्रणम्य शिरसा रामं लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम्।।5.65.1।।

युवराजं पुरस्कृत्य सुग्रीवमभिवाद्य च।

प्रवृत्तिमथ सीतायाः प्रवक्तुमुपचक्रमुः।।5.65.2।।


ततः thereafter, ते they, चित्रकाननम् wonderful forest of Chitra, प्रस्रवणम् शैलम् to Prasravana mount, युवराजम् heir apparent, पुरस्कृत्य placing in front with respect, गत्वा having arrived, रामम् to Rama, महाबलम् mighty, लक्ष्मणं च and Lakshmana, शिरसा bowed down, प्रणम्य offered salutations, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, अभिवाद्य च offered obeisance, अथ and then, सीतायाः regarding Sita's, प्रवृत्तिम् state, प्रवक्तुम् to tell, उपचक्रमुः began.

Thereafter the vanaras arrived at the Prasrvana mount, with wonderful forests and bowed down to Sri Rama and mighty Lakshaman and Sugriva placing their leader, heir apparent in front. Then they began telling the story of Sita and her state.
रावणान्तः पुरे रोधं राक्षसीभिश्च तर्जनम्।

रामे समनुरागं च यश्चायं समयः कृतः।।5.65.3।।

एतदाख्यान्ति ते सर्वे हरयो रामसन्निधौ।


सर्वे all, ते हरयः those vanaras, रावणान्तः पुरे in the chambers of Ravana, रोधम् detention, राक्षसीभिः ogresses, तर्जनं च threatening, रामे to Rama, समनुरागं च her devotion, यः that which, अयम् thus, समयः time limit, कृतः set, एतत् all that, रामसन्निधौ in Rama's presence, आख्यान्ति told.

The monkeys in Rama's presence narrated all about Sita's detention in Ravana's
Ashoka garden, the ogresses threatening her and the time limit fixed by Ravana (for her survival).
वैदेहीमक्षतां श्रुत्वा रामस्तूत्तरमब्रवीत्।।5.65.4।।

क्व सीता वर्तते देवी कथं च मयि वर्तते।

एतन्मे सर्वमाख्यात वैदेहीं प्रति वानराः।।5.65.5।।


वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, अक्षताम् not harmed, श्रुत्वा hearing, रामस्तु Rama too, उत्तरम् responded, अब्रवीत् asked, देवी divine lady, सीता Sita, क्व tell me, वर्तते she is, मयि to me, कथम् how, वर्तते is she, वानराः vanara, वैदेहीं प्रति her disposition towards, एतत् all that, सर्वम् every thing, मे to me, आख्यात asked.

Hearing of Sita alive and not harmed, Rama asked the vanaras, 'How is Sita? How is she disposed to me? Tell me everything'.
रामस्य गदितं श्रुत्वा हरयो रामसन्निधौ।

चोदयन्ति हनूमन्तं सीतावृत्तान्तकोविदम्।।5.65.6।।


हरयः vanaras,रामस्य Rama's, गदितम् words spoken, श्रुत्वा hearing, सीतावृत्तान्तकोविदम् who was aware of Sita's position, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, रामसन्निधौ in the presence of Rama, चोदयन्ति requested to tell.

On hearing the words from Rama, the vanaras requested Hanuman who was aware of Sita's position to tell Rama all about her.
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तेषां हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः।

प्रणम्य शिरसा देव्यै सीतायै तां दिशं प्रति।।5.65.7।।

उवाच वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञस्सीताया दर्शनं यथा।


मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, वाक्यज्ञः wise in speech, हनुमान् Hanuman, तेषाम् their,
वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा hearing, देव्यै to the divine lady, सीतायै Sita, तां दिशं प्रति to the direction in which she was located, शिरसा with head down, प्रणम्य offered salutations, सीतायाः about Sita's, दर्शनम् finding, यथा these, वाक्यम् words, उवाच spoke.

The son of the Wind god, Hanuman who was wise in speech heard the words of Rama, offered salutations to Sita in the direction in which she was located and narrated the story about her discovery.
समुद्रं लङ्घयित्वाहं शतयोजनमायतम्।।5.65.8।।

अगच्छं जानकीं सीतां मार्गमाणो दिदृक्षया।


अहम् I, शतयोजनम् a hundred yojanas, आयतम् wide, समुद्रम् ocean, लङ्घयित्वा having crossed, जानकीम् Janaki,सीताम् Sita, मार्गमाणः searching, दिदृक्षया with the intention of seeing, आगच्छम् reached.

"Having crossed the sea consisting of a hundred yojanas in quest of Vaidehi, I found her.
तत्र लङ्केति नगरी रावणस्य दुरात्मनः।।5.65.9।।

दक्षिणस्य समुद्रस्य तीरे वसति दक्षिणे।


तत्र there, दक्षिणस्य समुद्रस्य on the southern side of the sea, दक्षिणे तीरे of the southern shore, दुरात्मनः evilminded, रावणस्य Ravana's, लङ्केति in Lanka, नगरी city, वसति there is.

"On the southern shore of the ocean is situated the city of Lanka , ruled by the evilminded Ravana.
तत्र दृष्टा मया सीता रावणान्तः पुरे सती।।5.65.10।।

सन्न्यस्य त्वयि जीवन्ती रामा राम मनोरथम्।


रामा Rama, तत्र there, रावणान्तः पुरे in the inner palace of Ravana, सती your wife, त्वयि
your, मनोरथम् her hopes, सन्न्यस्य giving up desires, जीवन्ती living, राम lovely, सीता Sita, मया by me, दृष्टा seen.

"There in the inner palace of Ravana, I saw your lovely wife Sita, with all her hopes pinned on you, giving up all other desires.
दृष्टा मे राक्षसीमध्ये तर्ज्यमाना मुहुर्मुहुः।।5.65.11।।

राक्षसीभिर्विरूपाभी रक्षिता प्रमदावने।


प्रमदावने in that beautiful garden, विरूपाभिः hideous, राक्षसीभिः rakshasas, रक्षिता guarded, मुहुर्मुहुः again and again, तर्ज्यमाना threatening, मे I, राक्षसीमध्ये in the midst of ogresses, दृष्टा saw.

"I found her in the beautiful garden guarded by hideous ogresses threatening her again and again৷৷
दुःख मासाद्यते देवी तथाऽदुःखोचिता सती।।5.65.12।।

रावणान्तः पुरे रुद्धा राक्षसीभि स्सुरक्षिता।

एकवेणीधरा दीना त्वयि चिन्तापरायणा।।5.65.13।।

अधःशय्या विवर्णाङ्गी पद्मिनीव हिमागमे।

रावणाद्विनिवृत्तार्था मर्तव्यकृतनिश्चया।।5.65.14।।

देवी कथञ्चित्काकुत्स्थ त्वन्मना मार्गिता मया।


तथा in that way, दुःखोचिता mind filled with grief, देवी divine lady, दुःखम् grief, आपद्यते not deserve to experience, रावणान्तःपुरे in the inner palace of Ravana, रुद्धा detained, राक्षसीभि by ogresses, स्सुरक्षिता guarded by, एकवेणीधरा wearing a single braid( a mark of desolation),दीना pathetic, त्वयि your,सती wife,चिन्तापरायणा absorbed in your thought, अध: शय्या now lying on bare ground, हिमागमे in winter season, पद्मिनीव like the lotus, विवर्णाङ्गी limbs turned pale, रावणात् by Ravana, विनिवृत्तार्था averse to Ravana, मर्तव्यकृन्तिश्चया determined to die, काकुत्स्थ Rama alone, त्वन्मनाः in her mind, देवी Sita,
कथञ्चित् somehow, मार्गिता found.

"Sita, who did not deserve and yet was full of grief was detained by Ravana in his inner palace, guarded by ogresses. She had single braid (a sign of desolation), was pathetic, and totally absorbed in your thought. She was lying on bare ground with her limbs turned pale, like lotus in winter. She was averse to Ravana and was determined to commit suicide. She has only Rama in her mind. Somehow I found her.
इक्ष्वाकुवंशविख्यातिं शनैः कीर्तयतानघ।।5.65.15।।

सा मया नरशार्दूल विश्वासमुपपादिता।


अनघ sinless one, नरशार्दूल tiger among men, इक्ष्वाकुवंशविख्यातिम् all about the glory of Ikshvaku race, शनैः slowly, कीर्तयता praised, मया by me, सा she, विश्वासम् confidence, उपपादिता to inspire.

"O sinless one O tiger among men To inspire confidence in her I praised the glory of your Ikshvaku dynasty.
तत स्सम्भाषिता देवी सर्वमर्थं च दर्शिता।।5.65.16।।

रामसुग्रीवसख्यं च श्रुत्वा प्रीतिमुपागता।

नियत स्समुदाचारो भक्तिश्चास्यास्तथा त्वयि।।5.65.17।।


ततः then, देवी divine lady, सम्भाषिता talked, सर्वम् all,अर्थम् all facts,दर्शिता presented to her, रामसुग्रीवसख्यं च about the alliance of Rama and Sugriva, श्रुत्वा on hearing, प्रीतिम् affectionately, उपागता became, अस्याः her, समुदाचारः virtuous, नियतः fixed, तथा so also, त्वयि towards, भक्तिश्च and devotion.

"When the divine lady talked to me, I presented all the facts about the alliance of Rama and Sugriva. On hearing me, virtuous Sita, whose devotion is fixed on you became delighted.
एवं मया महाभागा दृष्टा जनकनन्दिनी।

उग्रेण तपसा युक्ता त्वद्भक्त्या पुरुषर्षभ।।5.65.18।।


पुरुषर्षभ bull among men, उग्रेण formidable, तपसा austerity, त्वद्भक्त्या devotion to you, युक्ता filled with, महाभागा prosperous, जनकनन्दिनी delight of Janaka, मया by me, एवम् that way, दृष्टा seen.

"O bull among men I saw Janaki,the delight of Janaka, a formidable lady filled with devotion to you and richly endowed with austerity.
अभिज्ञानं च मे दत्तं यथा वृत्तं तवान्तिके।

चित्रकूटे महाप्राज्ञ वायसं प्रति राघव।।5.65.19।।


महाप्राज्ञ very wise, चित्रकूटे in Chitrakuta, तव your, अन्तिके provided me, वायसं प्रति with an anecdote of a crow, यथा so also, वृत्तम् told, अभिज्ञानम् as an identification for you, मे to me, दत्तम् presented.

"O wise one, with your ring given her, she told me an anecdote of a crow that took place at Chitrakuta.
विज्ञाप्यश्च नरव्याघ्रो रामो वायुसुत त्वया।

अखिलेनेह यद्धृष्टमिति मामाह जानकी।।5.65.20।।


वायुसुत son of the Windgod, नरव्याघ्रः tiger among men, रामः Rama, त्वया your, इह here, यत् that which, दृष्टम् seen, अखिलेन should tell, विज्ञाप्यः should let him know, इति thus, जानकी Janaki, माम् me, आह told.

(She said)'O son of the Windgod you should let Rama, the tiger among men know all that you have seen here.
अयं चास्मै प्रदातव्यो यत्नात्सुपरिरक्षितः।

ब्रुवता वचनान्येवं सुग्रीवस्योपशृण्वतः।।5.65.21।।


सुग्रीवस्य while Sugriva, उपशृण्वतः within hearing of, एवम् that way, वचनानि these words, ब्रुवता that I said, यत्नात् the efforts, सुपरिरक्षितः kept with great care, अयं च and I, अस्मै this, प्रदातव्यः be presented.

'Within hearing of Sugriva, tell him about your efforts. Present this(signet) to Rama carefully preserved by me.
एष चूडामणिश्श्रीमान् मया सुपरिरक्षितः।

मनश्शिलायास्तिलको गण्डपार्श्वे निवेशितः।।5.65.22।।

त्वया प्रणष्ठे तिलके तं किल स्मर्तुमर्हसि।


श्रीमान् prosperous, एषः this, चूडामणिः Chudamani, मया by me, सुपरिरक्षितः very carefully preserved, तिलके red mark on the forehead, प्रणष्ठे when it was, त्वया by you, मनश्शिलायाः with the stone pigment, तिलकः mark on the forehead, गण्डपार्श्वे on my forehead, निवेशितः किल decorated indeed, तम् स्मर्तुम् remind him, अर्हसि is proper.

'This auspicious (jewel) Chudamani has been preserved by me very carefully. Remind him of the decorative red mark he painted with a stone pigment on my forehead, indeed, it is proper to remind him of this.
एष निर्यातितश्श्रीमान्मया ते वारि सम्भवः।

एतं दृष्ट्वा प्रहृष्यामि व्यसने त्वामिवानघ।।5.65.23।।


अनघ sinless one, दिव्यः wonderful, एषः this, निर्यातितः sent to you, श्रीमान् prosperous one, वारिसम्भवः born in the ocean, व्यसने in sorrow, एतम् this (Chudamani), मया I, दृष्टवा gazing, त्वामिव you only, प्रहृष्यामि was feeling happy.

'O sinless one tell Rama that this auspicious Chudamani born in the ocean is sent to him and I was gazing at it as if it was him (Rama) and feeling happy.
जीवितं धारयिष्यामि मासं दशरथात्मज।।5.65.24।।

ऊर्ध्वं मासान्न जीवेयं रक्षसां वशमागता।


दशरथात्मज Dasaratha's son, मासम् one month, जीवितम् living, धारयिष्यामि will hold on to, रक्षसाम् these demons, वशम् captivated by, आगता completion, मासात् after a month, ऊर्ध्वम् more than, न जीवेयम् will not live.

'O Son of Dasaratha I will hold on to life for a month. Captured by the demons, I will not live for more than a month'.
इति मामब्रवीत्सीता कृशाङ्गी धर्मचारिणी।।5.65.25।।

रावणान्तः पुरे रुद्धा मृगीवोत्फुल्ललोचना।


कृशाङ्गी enfeebled lady, धर्मचारिणी following righteous ways, रावणान्तःपुरे in the inner palace of Ravana, रुद्धा detained मृगीव like a doe, उत्फुल्ललोचना eyes wide open in fear, सीता Sita, माम् to me, इति this, अब्रवीत् said.

"With her limbs emaciated through austerities detained in Ravana's inner palace, eyes wide open in fear, Sita said this to me:
एतदेव मयाख्यातं सर्वं राघव यद्यथा।।5.65.26।।

सर्वथा सागरजले संतारः प्रविधीयताम्।


राघव Rama, यत् that which, यथा like that, एतत् happened, सर्वमेव every thing, मया by me, ख्यातम् has been said, सर्वथा ever, सागरजले water of the ocean, सन्तारः means to cross the ocean, प्रविधीयताम् pay attention to.

"O Rama I have spoken everything that has happened. We have to pay attention to the means of crossing the ocean."
तौ जाताश्वासौ राजपुत्रौ विदित्वा तच्चाभिज्ञानं राघवाय प्रदाय।

देव्या चाख्यातं सर्वमेवानुपूर्व्याद्वाचा सम्पूर्णं वायुपुत्त्र श्शशंस।।5.65.27।।


वायुपुत्रः son of the Windgod, तौ राजपुत्त्रौ the two princes Rama and Lakshmana, जाताश्वासौ sighing in relief, विदित्वा knowing, तत् that, अभिज्ञानम् identification, राघवाय to Rama, प्रदाय communicated, देव्या by Sita, आख्यातम् having spoken, सर्वमेव everything, सम्पूर्णम् completely, आनुपूर्व्यात् in an orderly manner, वाचा spoken, शशंस Hanuman.

Coming to know that the two princes were sighing in relief, Hanuman presented the token of identification given by Sita to Rama, after having communicated in full the messsage of Sita in an orderly manner.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे पञ्चषष्टितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the sixtyfifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
