[Sri Rama wails piteously after seeing the token chudamani.]

एवमुक्तो हनुमता रामो दशरथात्मज:।

तं मणिं हृदये कृत्वा प्ररुरोद सलक्ष्मणः।।5.66.1।।


हनुमता Hanuman, एवम् in that manner, उक्तः spoken, सलक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, दशरथात्मजः son of Dasaratha, रामः Rama, तं मणिम् that ornament, हृदये to the bosom, कृत्वा held, प्ररुरोद wept.

Thus addressed by Hanuman, Rama held the token (Chudamani) against his bosom and wept with Lakshmana.
तं तु दृष्ट्वा मणिश्रेष्ठं राघव श्शोककर्शितः।

नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत्।।5.66.2।।


तं मणिश्रेष्ठम् the precious jewel, दृष्ट्वा seeing, राघवः Rama, शोककर्शितः overcome with sorrow, अश्रुपूर्णाभ्याम् filled with tears, नेत्राभ्याम् both eyes, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, इदम् thus, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Seeing the precious jewel, Rama's eyes were filled with tears. Overwhelmed with grief, he spoke to Sugriva.
यथैव धेनु स्स्रवति स्नेहाद्वत्सस्य वत्सला।

तथा ममापि हृदयं मणिरत्नस्य दर्शनात्।।5.66.3।।


वत्सला fond of its calf, धेनुः cow, वत्सस्य at the sight of calf, स्नेहात् out of love, यथैव in the same way, स्रवति distils milk from its teats, मम हृदयमपि my heart also, मणिरत्नस्य at this excellent jewel, दर्शनात् on seeing, तथा so does.

"Just as a cow fond of its calf begins to distil milk from its teats at the sight of the calf, so does my heart melt at the sight of this excellent jewel.
मणिरत्नमिदं दत्तं वैदेह्याश्श्वशुरेण मे।

वधूकाले यथाबद्धमधिकं मूर्ध्नि शोभते।।5.66.4।।
 

वधूकाले at the time of marriage, मूर्ध्नि to the head, आबद्धम् tied, यथा so, शोभते charming, इदम् this, मणिरत्नम् gem of ornament, मे श्वशुरेण my fatherinlaw, वैदेह्याः to Vaidehi, दत्तम् presented.

"At the time of marriage, this jewel was presented by my father-in-law. Vaidehi wore it on her forehead and it looked charming.
अयं हि जलसम्भूतो मणिस्सज्जनपूजितः।

यज्ञे परमतुष्टेन दत्तश्शक्रेण धीमता।।5.66.5।।


जलसम्भूतः found in water, सज्जनपूजितः worshipped by elders of the family, अयं मणिः this jewel यज्ञे in sacrificial ceremony, परमतुष्टेन great joy, धीमता wise one, शक्रेण by Indra, दत्तः given.

"This was found in water and was bestowed by Indra out of great joy on Janaka who had performed a grand sacrificial ceremony. So it was worshipped by elders of the family.
इमं दृष्ट्वा मणिश्रेष्ठं यथा तातस्य दर्शनम्।

अद्यास्म्यवगतस्सौम्य वैदेहस्य तथा विभोः।।5.66.6।।


सौम्य noble, अद्य now, इमम् this, मणिश्रेष्ठम् gem of jewel, दृष्ट्वा when I see, तातस्य father's, तथा so also, विभोः king, वैदेहस्य of Videha, दर्शनम् seeing, यथा as if, अवगतः get.

"O noble Sugriva now when I see this excellent jewel, I get direct sight of my father and king of Videha (in the same way as I obtained the sight of Sita).
अयं हि शोभते तस्याः प्रियाया मूर्ध्नि मे मणिः।

अस्याद्य दर्शने नाहं प्राप्तां तामिव चिन्तये।।5.66.7।।


अयं मणिः this gem, मे प्रियायाः my beloved, मूर्ध्नि head, शोभते हि indeed shone, अद्य now, अस्य its, दर्शनेन mere look, ताम् her, प्राप्तामिव as if I am seeing, चिन्तये I think.

"This jewel was shining on the head of my beloved. Now its mere look makes me feel that I am seeing her.
किमाह सीता वैदेही ब्रूहि सौम्य पुनः पुनः।

पिपासुमिव तोयेन सिञ्चन्ती वाक्यवारिणा।।5.66.8।।


सौम्य O handsome (Hanuman), पिपासुम् for a thirsty one, तोयेन इव like water, वाक्यवारिणा in lifegiving water of words, सिञ्चन्ती sprinkle, वैदेही Vaidehi, सीता Sita, किम् what else, पुनः पुनः again and again, आह to speak, ब्रूहि asked.

"O handsome Hanuman Sita is like water for a thirsty person. Tell me again and again what Sita said to you. Sprinkle on me (lifegiving) water of her words in the form of message.
इतस्तु किं दुःखतरं यदिमं वारिसम्भवम्।

मणिं पश्यामि सौमित्रे वैदेहीमागतां विना।।5.66.9।।


सौमित्रे O Saumitri, वारिसम्भवम् found in water, इमं मणिम् this jewel, वैदेहीम् of Vaidehi, आगतां विना without her, यत् पश्यामि seeing this, इतः here, दुःखतरम् cause more sorrow, किम् what?

"O Saumitri I see this jewel born (formed) under water but not her. What can be more sorrowful to me?
चिरं जीवति वैदेही यदि मासं धरिष्यति।

क्षणं सौम्य न जीवेयं विना तामसितेक्षणाम्।।5.66.10।।
 

सौम्य O dear!, वैदेही Vaidehi, मासम् one month, धरिष्यति यदि if she lives, चिरम् for long, जीवति living, सौम्य O dear, ताम् her, असितेक्षणां विना without the (enchanting) black-eyed, क्षणम् for a moment, न जीवेयम् I cannot live

(Addressing Hanuman again) "O dear, if she can live for a month it is living for long. I would not live for a moment without the black-eyed Vaidehi.
नय मामपि तं देशं यत्र दृष्टा मम प्रिया।

न तिष्ठेयं क्षणमपि प्रवृत्तिमुपलभ्य च।।5.66.11।।


मम my, प्रिया beloved, यत्र दृष्टा where you saw, मामपि me too, तं देशम् that place, नय take me, प्रवृत्तिम् where she is, उपलभ्य च and knowing, क्षणमपि even a moment, न तिष्ठेयम् not stay here.

"Take me to the place you saw my beloved. Knowing where she is I cannot stay here even for a moment.
कथं सा मम सुश्रोणी भीरुभीरु स्सती सदा।

भयावहानां घोराणां मध्ये तिष्ठति रक्षसाम्।।5.66.12।।


सदा always, भीरुभीरुः सती very timid, मम सुश्रोणी my fairhipped beloved, भयावहानाम् fearsome forms, घोराणाम् dreadful ones, रक्षसाम् demons, मध्ये midst, कथम् how, तिष्ठति does she remain.

"She is always very timid. How can my fairhipped beloved remain in the midst of dreadful and fearsome demons?
शारद स्तिमिरोन्मुक्तो नूनं चन्द्रं इवांबुधैः।

आवृतं वदनं तस्या न विराजति राक्षसैः।।5.66.13।।


तिमिरोन्मुक्तः bereft of brightness, अम्बुदैः by rainclouds, चन्द्रः इव like the Moon, राक्षसैः by demons, आवृतम् surrounded by, तस्याः her, वदनम् countenance, न विराजति not shine, नूनम् surely.

"Her face resembling the autumnal Moon bereft of its stain, though covered with rainclouds does not shine so bright.
किमाह सीता हनुमंस्तत्त्वतः कथयाद्य मे।

एतेन खलु जीविष्ये भेषजेनातुरो यथा।।5.66.14।।


हनुमान् Hanuman, सीता Sita, किम् what, आह to go, अद्य now, तत्त्वतः truly, मे I am, कथय told by her, आतुरः eager, भेषजेन यथा just as medicine does, एतेन that alone, जीविष्ये खलु indeed, keep me alive.

"O Hanuman Tell me now truly what has been told by her. I am eager to know. Indeed, it will keep me alive just as medicne does. (I shall survive on the strength of her message)
मधुरा मधुरालापा किमाह मम भामिनी।

मद्विहीना वरारोहा हनुमन् कथयस्व मे।।5.66.15।।


मधुरा lovely one, मधुरालापा one who speaks sweetly, वरारोहा fairhipped one, मद्विहीना separated from me, मम भामिनी my beloved, किम् what, आह did she say, मे to me, कथयस्व you may narrate.

That lovely Sita who speaks sweetly, that fairhipped beautiful one who has been separated from me, my beloved, what did she say? Please narrate.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे षट्षष्टितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the sixtysixth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
