[Hanuman describes to Rama the manner in which he warded off Sita's doubts regarding monkeys' crossing the ocean and rescuing her.]

अथाहमुत्तरं देव्या पुनरुक्त स्ससम्भ्रमम्।

तव स्नेहान्नरव्याघ्र सौहार्दादनुमान्य वै।।5.68.1।।


नरव्याघ्र tiger among men, अथ and then, अहम् I, देव्या to Sita, तव your, स्नेहात् love, सौहार्दात् having affection, अनुमान्य confident, पुनः again, उत्तरम् addressed, ससम्भ्रमम् hurrying up, उक्तः said.

"O tiger among men In view of her regards for me and and her love for you she was confident and once again addressed me:
एवं बहुविधं वाच्यो रामो दाशरथिस्त्वया।

यथा मामाप्नुयाच्छीघ्रं हत्वा रावणमाहवे।।5.68.2।।


दाशरथिः Dasaratha's, रामः Rama, आहवे in battle, रावणम् Ravana, शीघ्रम् quickly, हत्वा slaying, माम् me, यथा so that, आप्नुयात् he will get me, तथा so that, एवम् in that way, बहुविधम् in many ways, वाच्यः you may appeal.

'You may appeal to Rama, the son of Dasaratha in many ways, that he should come quickly and slay Ravana in the battle and get me back.
यदि वा मन्यसे वीर वसैकाहमरिन्दम।

कस्मिंश्चित्संवृते देशे विक्रान्तश्श्वो गमिष्यसि।।5.68.3।।


अरिन्दम crusher of enemies, वीर brave, मन्यसे यदि I wish, कस्मिंश्चित् for a while, संवृते around, देशे this place, एकाहम् in a secluded place, वस stay, विश्रान्तः after resting, श्वः tomorrow, गमिष्यसि (you) may leave.

'O crusher of enemies O brave Hanuman I wish you rest for a while in a secluded place around here and leave tomorrow .
मम चाप्यल्पभाग्यायास्सान्निध्यात्तव वीर्यवन्।

अस्य शोकविपाकस्य मुहूर्तं स्याद्विमोक्षणम्।।5.68.4।।


वीर्यवन् valiant (Hanuman), तव your, सान्निध्यात् by your presence, अल्पभाग्यायाः less fortunate one, मम to me, अस्य your, शोकपाकस्य from sorrow, मुहूर्तम् for a while, विमोक्षणम् relieved, स्यात् will be.

'O valiant (Hanuman) by your presence here, the less fortunate me, will be relieved of sorrow for a while.
गते हि त्वयि विक्रान्ते पुनरागमनाय वै।

प्राणानामपि सन्देहो मम स्यान्नात्र संशयः।।5.68.5।।


विक्रान्ते courageous, त्वयि your, हरिशार्दूल tiger among monkeys, पुनरागमनाय by your return, गते gone, मम me, प्राणानामपि even my life, सन्देहः doubt, स्यात् will be, अत्र that, संदेहः doubt, न no.

'O courageous tiger among monkeys when you depart (abruptly) I doubt if I would be alive by your return.
तवादर्शनजश्शोको भूयो मां परितापयेत्।

दुःखाद्दुःखपराभूतां दुर्गतां दुःखभागिनीम्।।5.68.6।।
 

दुःखात् afflicted by sorrow, दुःखभागिनीम् unfortunate one, दुर्गताम् tormented, माम् me, तव your, अदर्शनजः not seeing you, शोकः grief, भूयः will be, परितापयेत् will be lamenting further.

I am an unfortunate one, afflicted by sorrow and tormented (by demons). If I am not able to see you I will be lamenting in grief.
अयं च वीर सन्देहस्तिष्ठतीव ममाग्रतः।

सुमहांस्त्वत्सहायेषु हर्यृक्षेषु हरीश्वर।।5.68.7।।


वीर brave, हरीश्वर vanara, त्वत्सहायेषु your helpers, हर्यृक्षेषु the vanaras and bears, अयम् this, सुमहान् highly, सन्देहः doubt, मम अग्रतः I have, तिष्ठतीव will cross this ocean.

'O brave vanaras I have great doubts about your assistants the vanaras and bears, crossing the ocean.
कथं नु खलु दुष्पारं तरिष्यन्ति महोदधिम्।

तानि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि तौ वा नरवरात्मजौ।।5.68.8।।


तानि those, हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि the army of vanaras and bears, तौ both, नरवरात्मजौ princes Rama and Lakshmana, दुष्पारम् impassable, महोदधिम् great ocean, कथं नु how will, तरिष्यन्ति be able to cross.

'How will the vanaras and bears cross this great, impassable ocean? How will the princes Rama and Lakshmna be able to cross it?
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्यास्य लङ्घने।

शक्तिस्स्याद्वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य वा।।5.68.9।।


अस्य that, सागरस्य ocean, लङ्घने to cross, वैनतेयस्य वा to Garuda, तव वा or you, मारुतस्य वा or wind god, त्रयाणाम् three of you, भूतानाम् among all beings, शक्तिः the capacity, स्यात् have.

'Only three among all beings, Garuda, the Windgod and you have the capacity to cross the ocean.
तदस्मिन् कार्यनिर्योगे वीरैवं दुरतिक्रमे।

किं पश्यसि समाधानं ब्रूहि कार्यविदां वरः।।5.68.10।।


वीर hero, तत् that, एवम् in that way, दुरतिक्रमे who knows to succeed, अस्मि I, कार्यनिर्योगे difficult to accomplish, किम् what, समाधानम् expedient, पश्यसि are you perceiving, ब्रूहि tell me, कार्यविदाम् to accomplish the task, वर हि foremost indeed.

'O heroic Hanuman you know how to succeed. But I wish to know what expedient you have to accomplish which is difficult by all means. O foremost vanara, please tell me .
काममस्य त्वमेवैकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने।

पर्याप्तः परवीरघ्न यशस्यस्ते बलोदयः।।5.68.11।।


परवीरघ्न slayer of enemy heroes, अस्य कार्यस्य in this task, परिसाधने ability to succeed, त्वम् for you, एक एव single handed, पर्याप्तः कामम् to accomplish the desired object, ते to you, फलोदयः having succeed, यशस्यः you will be renowned.

'O Slayer of enemy heroes you have the ability to accomplsh this task singlehanded. By succeeding in accomplishing the objective you will become renowned (and not Rama).
बलै स्समग्रैर्यदि मां हत्वा रावणमाहवे।

विजयी स्वां पुरीं रामो नयेत्तत्स्याद्यशस्करम्।।5.68.12।।


रामः Rama, रावणम् Ravana's, समग्रैः entire, बलैः with army, आहवे in battle, हत्वा slaying, विजयी becoming victorious, स्वाम् his, पुरीम् city, माम् me, नयेद्यदि will take, तत् that, यशस्करम् glorious, स्यात् will be.

'When Rama slays Ravana and his entire army and takes me to his city after becoming victorious it will add glory to him.
यथाऽहं तस्य वीरस्य वनादुपधिना हृता।

रक्षसा तद्भयादेव तथा नार्हति राघवः।।5.68.13।।


अहम् I am, रक्षसा by the demon, वीरस्य valiant one, उपधिना cheat, यथा like, हृता abducted, तथा that way, तद्भयादेव out of fear of, राघवः Rama, नार्हति not right.

'Tell valiant Rama not to take me back the way Ravana, the demon abducted me out of fear. Which is not right.
बलैस्तु सङ्कुलां कृत्वा लङ्कां परबलार्दनः।

मां नयेद्यदि काकुत्स्थस्तत्तस्य सदृशं भवेत्।।5.68.14।।


परबलार्धनः one who is a slayer of the enemy army, काकुत्स्थः Kakutstha, लङ्काम् Lanka, शरैः with arrows, सङ्कुलाम् filling, कृत्वा does, माम् me, नयेद्यदि takes, तत् that, तस्य to him, सदृशम् pleasing to look, भवेत् will be.

'If Rama, the slayer of the enemy army, could fill Lanka with his arrows and take me that will be a good sight for him to see.
तद्यथा तस्य विक्रान्तमनुरूपं महात्मनः।

भवेदाहवशूरस्य तथा त्वमुपपादय।।5.68.15।।


तत् that, महात्मनः great soul, आहवशूरस्य exalted hero, तस्य his, अनुरूपम् according to his might, विक्रान्तम् exhibiting, यथा that way, भवेत् will be, तथा like, त्वम् you, उपपादय make arrangement.

'You may make arrangement in such a way that the exalted hero Rama exhibits his might according to his stature'.
तदर्थोपहितं वाक्यं प्रश्रितं हेतुसंहितम्।

निशम्याहं तत श्शेषं वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रुवम्।।5.68.16।।


अहम् I am, अर्थोपहितम् meaningful, प्रश्रितं courteous, हेतुसंहितम् reasonable, तत् those, वाक्यम् words, निशम्य hearing, ततः then, शेषम् rest, उत्तरम् reply, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवम् said.

"Hearing the meaningful, courteous and reasonable words of Sita, I replied :
देवि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानामीश्वरः प्लवतां वरः।

सुग्रीवस्सत्त्वसम्पन्नस्तवार्थे कृतनिश्चयः।।5.68.17।।


देवि O queen, हर्यृक्षसैन्यानाम् army of bears and vanaras, ईश्वरः lord, प्लवतां वरः foremost among leaping beings, सत्त्वसम्पन्नः richly endowed with strength, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, तव अर्धे your task, कृतनिश्चयः resolved.

'O queen The lord of the army of bears and vanaras who is the foremost among the monkeys is endowed with enough strength and has resolved to rescue you.
तस्य विक्रमसम्पन्नास्सत्त्ववन्तो महाबलाः।

मन स्सङ्कल्पसम्पाता निदेशे हरयः स्थिताः।।5.68.18।।


विक्रमसम्पन्नाः mighty, सत्त्ववन्तः powerful, महाबलाः tough, मनः सङ्कल्पसम्पाताः having the speed of thought, हरयः monkeys, तस्य his, निदेशे under his command, स्थिताः remain.

'Mighty, powerful and tough monkeys who have the speed of thought are under the command of Sugriva.
येषां नोपरि नाधस्तान्न तिर्यक्सज्जते गतिः।

न च कर्मसु सीदन्ति महत्स्वमिततेजसः।।5.68.19।।
 

येषाम् all of them, गतिः can go, उपरि in the sky, न सज्जते not obstructed, अधस्तात् in the underworld, न not, तिर्यक् obliquely, न not, अमिततेजसः very brilliant, महत्सु very great, कर्मसु task also, न सीदन्ति without any difficulty.

'All of them can go upward in the sky, downward into the underworld or obliquely in any direction without obstruction. They are brilliant enough to do any great task without any difficulty.
असकृत्तैर्महाभागैर्वानरैर्बलदर्पितैः।

प्रदक्षिणीकृता भूमिर्वायुमार्गानुसारिभिः।।5.68.20।।


महाभागैः great lady, बलदर्पितैः by extraordinary might, वायुमार्गानुसारिभिः flying with the wind, तैः they, वानरैः vanaras, भूमिः earth, प्रदक्षिणीकृता have circumambulated.

'O great lady the mighty vanaras of extraordinary strength can fly with the wind and have even circumambulated the earth.
मद्विशिष्टाश्च तुल्याश्च सन्ति तत्र वनौकसः।

मत्तः प्रत्यवरः कश्चिन्नास्ति सुग्रीवसन्निधौ।।5.68.21।।


तत्र there, मद्विशिष्टाश्च greater than, तुल्याश्च equals, वनौकसः monkeys, सन्ति are there, मत्तः compared to me, प्रत्यवरः less valiant, कश्चित् none, सुग्रीवसन्निधौ in front of Sugriva, नास्ति not there.

'There are monkeys who are more powerful than me or equal to me. None are less strong than me or Sugriva.
अहं तावदिह प्राप्तः किं पुनस्ते महाबलाः।

न हि प्रकृष्टाः प्रेत्यन्ते प्रेष्यन्ते हीतरे जनाः।।5.68.22।।


अहं तावत् therefore I, इह here, अनुप्राप्तः have come, महाबलाः highly powerful ones, ते they, किं पुनः why to say again, प्रकृष्टाः superior, न प्रेत्यन्ते हि indeed do not send, इतरे others, जनाः people, प्रेष्यन्ते हि will send.

'When I could come here, what to speak of the mightier monkeys?, People do not send the superior ones on errand, but send only the juniors.
तदलं परितापेन देवि मन्युर्व्यपैतु ते।

एकोत्पातेन ते लङ्कामेष्यन्ति हरियूथपाः।।5.68.23।।


देवि O noble lady, तत् that, परितापेन lamentation, अलम् enough, ते your, शोकः sorrow, व्यपैतु will fill this place, ते they, हरियूथपाः vanara army, एकोत्पातेन in one jump, लङ्काम् Lanka, एष्यन्ति will fly to reach.

'O noble lady give up your lamentation. Enough of sorrowing. The vanara army will fly and reach this place at one leap and fill it.
मम पृष्ठगतौ तौ च चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ।

त्वत्सकाशं महाभागे नृसिंहावागमिष्यतः।।5.68.24।।


महाभागे O noble lady, नृसिंहौ lions among men, तौ च they both, मम my, पृष्ठगतौ on back, उदितौ ascend, चन्द्रसूर्याविव like Sun and Moon, त्वत्सकाशम् newly risen, आगमिष्यतः will reach here.

'O noble lady the lions among men, Rama and Lakshmana who resemble Sun and Moon will ascend on my back and reach here.
अरिघ्नं सिंहसङ्काशं क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि राघवम्।

लक्ष्मणं च धनुष्पाणिं लङ्काद्वारमुपस्थितम्।।5.68.25।।


लङ्काद्वारम् at the entrance of Lanka, उपस्थितम् standing, अरिघ्नम् slayer of enemies, सिंहसङ्काशम् like a lion, तं राघवम् that Rama, धनुष्पाणिम् wielding bow in hand, लक्ष्मणं च and Lakshmana, क्षिप्रम् very soon, द्रक्ष्यसि will see.

'You will see the lionlike Rama, a slayer of enemies and Lakshmana wielding bow in hand standing at the entrance of Lanka very soon.
नखदंष्ट्रायुधान् वीरान् सिंहशार्दूलविक्रमान्।

वानरान्वारणोन्द्राभान् क्षिप्रं द्रक्षसि सङ्गतान्।।5.68.26।।

शैलाम्बुदनिकाशानां लङ्कामलयसानुषु।

नर्दतां कपिमुख्यानामचिराच्छ्रोष्यसि स्वनम्।।5.68.27।।


शैलाम्बुदनिकाशानाम् like rainclouds on the mountain, लङ्कामलयसानुषु Lanka's mountain Malaya, नर्दताम् roaring like lion, कपिमुख्यानाम् generals of monkey army, स्वनम् sounds, अचारत् making, श्रोष्यसि will hear.

'You will hear before long the shouts of generals of the vanaras who resemble rainclouds on the mountain roaring like lions from the Malaya mountain of Lanka.
निवृत्तवनवासं च त्वया सार्धमरिन्दमम्।

अभिषिक्तमयोध्यायां क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि राघवम्।।5.68.28।।


निवृत्तवनवासम् completing the exile in the forest, अरिन्दमम् slayer of enemies, अयोध्यायाम् in Ayodhya, त्वया सार्धम् along with you, अभिषिक्तम् crowned, राघवम् Rama, क्षिप्रम् soon, द्रक्ष्यसि will see.

'You will soon see Rama, the slayer of enemies crowned as king of Ayodhya with you, having duly completed the term of exile in the forest'.
ततो मया वाग्भिरदीनभाषिणा शिवाभिरिष्टाभिरभिप्रसादिता।

जगाम शान्तिं मम मैथिलात्मजा तवापि शोकेन तदाभिपीडिता।।5.68.29।।
 

ततः then, तव your, शोकेनापि also in grief, तदा then, अभिपीडिता much grief, मैथिलात्मजा princess of Mithila, अदीनभाषिणा soothing words, मया of me, शिवाभिः auspicious also, इष्टाभिः welcome, मम my, वाग्भि: words, अभिप्रसादिता having spoken, शान्तिम् quiet, जगाम became.

Sita though afflicted heard from me that you were also in excessive grief on account of separation from her and from my soothing, auspicious and welcome words, she derived comfort and remained quiet.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे अष्टषष्टितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the sixtyeighth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
