[Hanuman reaches the main entrance of Lanka assuming a diminutive form.]

sa sāgaramanādṛṣyamatikramya mahābalaḥ.

trikūṭaśikharē laṅkāṅ sthitāṅ svasthō dadarśa ha৷৷5.2.1৷৷


mahābalaḥ mighty, saḥ Hanuman, anādhṛṣyam inviolable, sāgaram sea, atikramya having crossed, svasthaḥ comfortable, trikūṭaśikharē on Trikuta mountain peak, sthitām standing, laṅkām Lanka, dadarśa ha saw.

The mighty Hanuman crossed the inviolable sea, stood comfortably on the peak of Trikuta mountain and looked at Lanka.
tataḥ pādamamuktēna puṣpavarṣēṇa vīryavān.

abhivṛṣṭaḥ sthitastatra babhau puṣpamayō yathā৷৷5.2.2৷৷


tataḥ then, tatra there, sthitaḥ he stood, vīryavān heroic one, pādapamuktēna dropped from the trees, puṣpavarṣēṇa by the rain of flowers, abhivṛṣṭaḥ covered fully, puṣpamayō yathā like a heap of flowers, babhau looked.

Covered fully with the continuous shower of flowers dropped on him from the trees, heroic Hanuman appeared as though he was a heap of flowers as he stood there.
yōjanānāṅ śataṅ śrīmāṅstīrtvāpyuttamavikramaḥ.

aniḥśvasan kapistatra na glānimadhigacchati৷৷5.2.3৷৷


uttamavikramaḥ endowed with great prowess, śrīmān glorious one, kapiḥ monkey, yōjanānām of yojanas, śatam a hundred, tīrtvāpi even after crossing also, aniḥśvasan without gasping, tatra there, glānim exhaustion, na adhigacchati did not experience.

The glorious, powerful vanara (Hanuman) even after crossing a hundred yojanas, felt neither suffocated nor exasperated.
śatānyahaṅ yōjanānāṅ kramēyaṅ subahūnyapi.

kiṅ punaḥ sāgarasyāntaṅ saṅkhyātaṅ śatayōjanam৷৷5.2.4৷৷


aham I, yōjanānām of yojanas, subahūni very many, śatānyapi even hundreds of them, kramēyam I can cross, śatayōjanam a hundred yojanas, saṅkhyātam a measured, sāgarasya ocean's, antam end, kiṅ punaḥ what more.

(He said to himself), "I can cross a distance of even hundreds of yojanas. What to say of a hundred yojanas which is a calculated distance."
sa tu vīryavatāṅ śrēṣṭhaḥ plavatāmapi cōttamaḥ.

jagāma vēgavān laṅkāṅ laṅghayitvā mahōdadhim৷৷5.2.5৷৷


vīryavatām courageous, śrēṣṭhaḥ exalted, plavatāmapi among vanaras, uttamaḥ best, saḥ tu he on his part, vēgavān noted for speed, mahōdadhim ocean, laṅghayitvā after crossing over, laṅkām Lanka, jagāma reached.

Courageous and exalted Hanuman, the best among vanaras, noted for his speed reached Lanka crossing over the great ocean on his own.
śādvalāni ca nīlāni gandhavanti vanāni ca.

gaṇḍavanti ca madhyēna jagāma nagavanti ca৷৷5.2.6৷৷


nīlāni dark-coloured, śādvalāni having grassland, gandhavanti fragrant, gaṇḍavanti with big rocks, madhyēna on the way, nagavanti ca mountains also, vanāni ca even trees, jagāma went .

Hanuman passed through forests laden with fragrant flowers, bluish grassy land, big rocks and mountains covered with trees.
śailāṅśca tarusaṅchannān vanārājīśca puṣpitāḥ.

abhicakrāma tējasvī hanumān plavagarṣabhaḥ৷৷5.2.7৷৷


plavagarṣabhaḥ bull among vanaras, tējasvī brilliant one, hanumān Hanuman, tarusaṅchannān dense with trees, śailāṅśca and mountains, puṣpitāḥ blossomed, vanarājīśca forest ranges, abhicakrāma crossed.

Brilliant Hanuman, a bull among monkeys, crossed the mountains covered with blossoming trees and forest ranges.
sa tasminnacalē tiṣṭhanvanānyupavanāni ca.

sa nagāgrē ca tāṅ laṅkāṅ dadarśa pavanātmajaḥ৷৷5.2.8৷৷


saḥ pavanātmajaḥ that son of the Wind-god, tasmin on that, acalē on the mountain, tiṣṭhan while standing, vanāni forests, upavanāni ca and groves, nagāgrē on the mountain
peaks, tām that, laṅkām Lanka, dadarśa saw.

That son of the Wind-god stood on the mountain and saw the forests and groves round Lanka situated on the mountain peak.
saralān karṇikārāṅśca kharjūrāṅśca supuṣpitān.

priyālūnmuculindāṅśca kuṭajān kētakānapi৷৷5.2.9৷৷

priyaṅṅgūn gandhapūrṇāṅśca nīpān saptacchadāṅstathā.

āsanān kōvidārāṅśca karavīrāṅśca puṣpitān৷৷5.2.10৷৷

puṣpabhāranibaddhāṅśca tathā mukulitānapi.

pādapān vihagākīrṇān pavanādhūtamastakān৷৷5.2.11৷৷

haṅsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā vāpīḥ padmōtmalāyutāḥ.

ākrīḍān vividhān ramyāvan vividhāṅśca jalāśayān৷৷5.2.12৷৷

santatān vividhairvṛkṣaiḥ sarvartuphalapuṣpitaiḥ.

udyānāni ca ramyāṇi dadarśa kapikuñjaraḥ৷৷5.2.13৷৷


kapikuñjaraḥ elephant-like vanara, saralān Saralas, karṇikārāṅśca Karnikaras, supuṣpitān well bloomed, kharjūrāṅśca Date-palms, priyālūn Priyala, muculiṅdāṅśca Muchulinda, kuṭajān Kutaja, kētakānapi and Kethaka, gandhapūrṇān filled with fragrance, priyaṅgūṅśca Priyangu, nīpān Nipa, tathā so also, saptacchadān Saptachhada, āsanān Asana, kōvidārāṅśca Kovidara, puṣpitān flowering, karavīrāṅśca Karaveera, puṣpabhāranibaddhāṅśca trees heavily loaded with flowers, tathā so also, mukulitānapi and buds, vihagākīrṇān filled with birds, pavanādhūtamastakān branches shaken by the wind, pādapān trees, haṅsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāḥ flocks of swans and water-fowls, vāpīḥ ponds, vividhān different kinds, ramyān beautiful, ākrīḍān pleasure gardens, sarvartuphalapuṣpitaiḥ with a trees yielding fruits and flowers in all seasons, vividhaiḥ with variety of, vṛkṣaiḥ trees, santatān stretched, vividhān many, jalāśayāṅśca water resorts, ramyāṇi delightful, udyānāni ca gardens also, dadarśa saw.

The mighty vanara saw around Lanka, trees like sarala, karnikara in full bloom, date-palms, priyala, muchulinda, kutaja, kethaka trees filled with fragrance priyangu, kadamba, so also flowering plants like saptachhada, asana, kovidara and karaveera fully loaded with flowers and buds. These trees were thronged by birds, with their branches shaken by the wind. Flocks of swans and water-fowls were found in ponds of different types. There were various pleasure groves with flowers in bloom and fruits of all seasons and varieties of water resorts and delightful gardens.
samāsādya ca lakṣmīvān laṅkāṅ rāvaṇapālitām.

parikhābhiḥ sapadmābhiḥ sōtpalābhiralaṅkṛtām৷৷5.2.14৷৷

sītāpaharaṇārthēna rāvaṇēna surakṣitām.

samantādvicaradbhiśca rākṣasairugradhanvibhiḥ৷৷5.2.15৷৷

kāñcanēnāvṛtāṅ ramyāṅ prākārēṇa mahāpurīm.

gṛhaiśca grahasaṅkāśaiḥ śāradāmbudasannibhaiḥ৷৷5.2.16৷৷

pāṇḍurābhiḥ pratōlībhiruccābhirabhisaṅvṛtām.

aṭṭālakaśatākīrṇāṅ patākādhvajamālinīm৷৷5.2.17৷৷

tōraṇaiḥ kāñcanairdivyairlatāpaṅtkivicitritaiḥ.

dadarśa hanumān laṅkāṅ divi dēvapurīṅ yathā৷৷5.2.18৷৷


lakṣmīvān fortunate, hanumān Hanuman, laṅkām Lanka, samāsādya having reached, rāvaṇapālitām ruled by Ravana, sapadmābhiḥ with lotuses, sōtpalābhiḥ and blue lotuses, parikhābhiḥ by moats, alaṅkṛtām decorated, sītāpaharaṇārthēna keeping Sita's abduction in view, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, samantāt all over, vicaradbhi: moving, ugradhanvibhiḥ holding frightening bows, rākṣasaiḥ by demons, surakṣitām well protected, kāñcanēna with golden, prākārēṇa by boundary wall, āvṛtām surrounded, ramyām beautiful, mahāpurīm great city, grahasaṅkāśai: resembling the assembly of planets, śāradāmbudasannibhaiḥ resembling autumnal clouds, gṛhaiśca houses, pāṇḍurābhiḥ white, uccābhiḥ elevated, pratōlībhiḥ streets, abhisaṅvṛtām crowded, patākādhvajamālinīm decorated with banners, flags posts and garlands,divyaiḥ wonderful, kāñcanaiḥ golden, latāpaṅtkivicitritaiḥ by rows of colourful creepers, tōraṇaiḥ with festoons, divi in heaven, dēvapurīmiva like the city of gods, laṅkām Lanka, dadarśa saw.

Fortunate Hanuman having reached Lanka ruled by Ravana found it surrounded by moats full of blue lotuses, guarded by demons with frightening bows, in view of Sita abducted and kept there. It was protected by boundary walls inlaid with gold; that great and beautiful city with buildings resembling the assembly of planets and white-washed, elevated houses looking like autumnal clouds and well laid out streets decorated with garlands of banners and flag posts, rows of colourful creepers and festoons. The city of Lanka appeared like Amaravati, the city of gods.
girimūrdhniṅ sthitāṅ laṅkāṅ pāṇḍurairbhavanaiḥ śubhaiḥ.

dadarśa sa kapiśrēṣṭhaḥ puramākāśagaṅ yathā৷৷5.2.19৷৷


saḥ that, kapiśrēṣṭhaḥ foremost of the vanaras, pāṇḍuraiḥ with white , śubhaiḥ with auspicious, bhavanaiḥ with mansions, girimūrdhni on the mountain, sthitām stood, ākāśagam yathā as if touching
the sky, puraṅ a city, laṅkām Lanka, dadarśa saw.

The foremost among the vanaras, perched on top of the mountain saw the city of Lanka on the mountain with auspicious mansions as though touching the sky.
pālitāṅ rākṣasēndrēṇa nirmitāṅ viśvakarmaṇā.

plavamānamivākāśē dadarśa hanumān purīm৷৷5.2.20৷৷


hanumān Hanuman, rākṣasēndrēṇa by the lord of demons, pālitām ruled, viśvakarmaṇā by Visvakarma, nirmitām constructed, ākāśē in the sky, plavamānāmiva as if moving purīm city, dadarśa saw.

The city of Lanka, ruled by the lord of demons and built by Visvakarma looked as if it was a city floating in the sky.
vapraprākārajaghanāṅ vipulāmbunavāmbarām.

śataghnīśūlakēśāntāmaṭṭālakavataṅsakām৷৷5.2.21৷৷

manasēva kṛtāṅ laṅkāṅ nirmitāṅ viśvakarmaṇā.

dvāramuttaramāsādya cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ৷৷5.2.22৷৷


vānaraḥ vanara, vapraprākārajaghanām ramparts of the fortress for hips and loins, vipulāmbunavāmbarām moats full of water for robes, śataghnīśūlakēśāntām spiked iron tridents for locks of hair, aṭṭālakavataṅsakām tall towers for ear-rings, manasā in the mind, ēva only, kṛtāṅ conceived, nirmitām built, viśvakarmaṇā by Visvakarma, laṅkām Lanka, uttaraṅ dvāram northern entrance, āsādya having reached, cintayāmāsa started thinking.

Having reached the northern entrance of the city he started thinking that Visvakarma must have conceived Lanka as a lady with its ramparts as her hips and loins, moats filled with water as her robes, the spiked iron tridents as her locks of hair, and the tall towers as her her ear- rings
kailāsaśikharaprakhyāmālikhantīmivāmbaram.

ḍīyamānāmivākāśamucchritairbhavanōttamaiḥ৷৷5.2.23৷৷

sampūrṇāṅ rākṣasairghōrairnāgairbhōgavatīmiva.

acintyāṅ sukṛtāṅ spaṣṭāṅ kubērādhyuṣitāṅ purā৷৷5.2.24৷৷

daṅṣṭribhirbahubhiḥ śūraiḥ śūlapaṭṭasapāṇibhiḥ.

rakṣitāṅ rākṣasairghōrairguhāmāśīviṣairiva৷৷5.2.25৷৷

tasyāśca mahatīṅ guptiṅ sāgaraṅ ca nirīkṣya saḥ.

rāvaṇaṅ ca ripuṅ ghōraṅ cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ৷৷5.2.26৷৷


kailāsaśikharaprakhyām resembling mount Kailas, ambaram sky, alikhantīmiva as if scraping, ucchritaiḥ by raised sky-scrapers, bhavanōttamaiḥ by excellent mansions, ākāśam sky, ḍīyamānāmiva like flying in the air, nāgaiḥ by nagas, bhōgavatīmiva like Bhogavati the nether world, ghōraiḥ with dreadful, rākṣasaiḥ demons, sampūrṇām totally, acintyām unimaginable, sukṛtām well-built, spaṣṭām clearly visible, purā earlier, kubērādhyuṣitām occupied by Kubera, āśīviṣaiḥ by venemous serpents, guhāmiva like a cave, daṅṣṭribhiḥ having protruding fangs, śūraiḥ by warriors, śūlapaṭṭasapāṇibhiḥ by those holding tridents and spears in their hands, ghōraiḥ horrible, rākṣasaiḥ by demons, rakṣitām guarded, saḥ vānaraḥ that vanara, tasyāḥ her, mahatīm great, guptiṅ security, sāgaraṅ ca even the ocean, ghōram ripum terrific enemy, rāvaṇaṅ ca Ravana also, nirīkṣya looked at, cintayāmāsa started thinking.

Observing Lanka that resembled mount Kailas, with sky scrapers appearing as if flying, filled with dreadful demons and nagas protecting the city of Bhogavati (the city of Patala), unimaginably well-built. It was once occupied by Kubera (half brother of Ravana). It was guarded by horrible demons holding tridents and spears in their hands. The city appeared like a cavern protected by venomous serpents with protruding fangs. Hanuman examined the high security of Lanka and looked at the ocean. He thought of the form of Ravana, a formidable enemy:
āgatyāpīha harayō bhaviṣyanti nirarthakāḥ.

na hi yuddēna vai laṅkā śakyā jētuṅ surairapi৷৷5.2.27৷৷


harayaḥ monkeys, iha here, āgatyāpi even after coming here, nirarthakāḥ will not serve any purpose, bhaviṣyanti will be, laṅkā Lanka, yuddhēna by war, surairapi even by gods, jētum to win, na śakyā hi not possible.

'It is not possible for monkeys to come here and even if they do, it is no use. Lanka is invincible even to the gods in war.
imāṅ tu viṣamāṅ durgāṅ laṅkāṅ rāvaṇapālitām.

prāpyāpi sa mahābāhuḥ kiṅ kariṣyati rāghavaḥ৷৷5.2.28৷৷


viṣamām most difficult, durgām formidable, rāvaṇapālitām ruled by Ravana, imām this, laṅkām Lanka, prāpyāpi even if he comes, mahābāhuḥ great-armed, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, kiṅ kariṣyati what can he do?

'What will Rama the mighty armed hero do even after reaching this formidable city of Lanka ruled by Ravana?
avakāśō nasāntvasya rākṣasēṣvabhigamyatē.

na dānasya na bhēdasya naiva yuddhasya dṛśyatē৷৷5.2.29৷৷


rākṣasēṣu with demons, sāntvasya for reconciliation, avakāśaḥ scope, na abhigamyatē not expected, dānasya by making offers, na not, bhēdasya by dissension, na not, yuddhasya of war, naiva dṛśyatē not feasible.

'There is no scope for reconciliation with the demons. It is not possible to win over them with gifts. They cannot be divided by dissension. There is no scope for war.
caturṇāmēva hi gatirvānarāṇāṅ mahātmanām.

vāliputrasya nīlasya mama rājñaśca dhīmataḥ৷৷5.2.30৷৷


vāliputrasya Vali's son's, nīlasya of Nila, mama mine, dhīmataḥ of the wise one, rājñaśca king's, mahātmanām of the great souls, caturṇām of these four, vānarāṇām these four among vanaras only, gatiḥ hi can come here.

'Only four great monkeys can have access to this place. They are Angada the son of Vali, Nila, Sugriva, the wise king of monkeys and myself.
yāvajjānāmi vaidēhīṅ yadi jīvati vā na vā.

tatraiva cintayiṣyāmi dṛṣṭvā tāṅ janakātmajām৷৷5.2.31৷৷


vaidēhīm Vaidehi, yadi jīvati vā if she is alive or, na vā not alive, yāvat jānāmi until I know, tām her, janakātmajām Janaka's daughter, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, tatraiva there on the spot, cintayiṣyāmi I shall think over.

'Whether Janaka's daughter, Vaidehi is alive or not is not known. After seeing her I shall think over'.
tataḥ sa cintayāmāsa muhūrtaṅ kapikuñjaraḥ.

giriśṛṅgē sthitastasmin rāmasyābhyudayē rataḥ৷৷5.2.32৷৷


tataḥ then, rāmasya Rama's, abhyudayē in his welfare, rataḥ lay, saḥ that, kapikuñjaraḥ elephant among vanaras, tasmin on that, giriśṛṅgē on the mountain peak, sthitaḥ stood, muhūrtam for a short while, cintayāmāsa pondered.

Standing on the mountain, the elephant among monkeys pondered for a while on the means of finding Sita, in which lay the welfare of Rama.
anēna rūpēṇa mayā na śakyā rakṣasāṅ purī.

pravēṣṭuṅ rākṣasairguptā krūrairbalasamanvitaiḥ৷৷5.2.33৷৷


krūraiḥ by the fierce, balasamanvitaiḥ by the powerful ones, rākṣasaiḥ by demons, guptā guarded,
rakṣasām of demons, purī city, mayā by me, anēna by this present, rūpēṇa form, pravēṣṭum to enter, na śakyā not possible.

'I shall not be able in my present form to enter the city guarded by fierce and powerful demons.
ugraujasō mahāvīryā balavantaśca rākṣasāḥ.

vañcanīyā mayā sarvē jānakīṅ parimārgatā৷৷5.2.34৷৷


jānakīm Sita, parimārgatā while searching, mayā by me, ugraujasaḥ energetic, mahāvīryāḥ very valiant, balavantaśca powerful, rākṣasāḥ demons, sarvē all, vañcanīyāḥ should be deceived.

lakṣyālakṣyēṇa rūpēṇa rātrau laṅkā purī mayā.

pravēṣṭuṅ prāptakālaṅ mē kṛtyaṅ sādhayituṅ mahat৷৷5.2.35৷৷


mē for me, mahat great, kṛtyam task, sādhayitum to accomplish, mayā by me, lakṣyālakṣyēṇa in a non conspicious, rūpēṇa form, rātrau during night, laṅkāpurī city of Lanka, pravēṣṭum to enter, prāptakālam is the appropriate time.

'To accomplish this great task I will have to assume an inconspicious form and enter the city of Lanka in the night as that is the appropriate time.
tāṅ purīṅ tādṛśīṅ dṛṣṭvā durādharṣāṅ surāsuraiḥ.

hanumān cintayāmāsa viniścitya muhurmuhuḥ৷৷5.2.36৷৷


hanumān Hanuman, surāsuraiḥ by gods and demons, durādharṣām unassailable, tādṛśīm such, tām that, purīm city, dṛṣṭvā seeing, viniścitya sighing, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, cintayāmāsa reflected.

'Looking at the city, unassailable even to gods and demons, Hanuman sighed again and again thinking:
kēnōpāyēna paśyēyaṅ maithilīṅ janakātmajām.

adṛṣṭō rākṣasēndrēṇa rāvaṇēna durātmanā৷৷5.2.37৷৷


durātmanā evil-minded, rākṣasēndrēṇa by lord of demons, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, adṛṣṭaḥ without being seen, kēna for that, upāyēna means, janakātmajām Janaka's daughter, maithilīm Mythili, paśyēyam will be possible to find.

'By what means can I find Mythili, daughter of Janaka, without being noticed by the evil-minded Ravana, the lord of demons?
na vinaśyētkathaṅ kāryaṅ rāmasya viditātmanaḥ.

ēkāmēkaśca vaśyēyaṅ rahitē janakātmajām৷৷5.2.38৷৷


viditātmanaḥ one who is endowed with self-knowledge, rāmasya Rama's, kāryam task, katham how, na vinaśyēt will not be spoilt, ēkaśca single person, rahitē in a private audience, ēkām her, janakātmajām Sita, paśyēyam possible to see.

'How can the purpose of Rama, a noble soul be not spoilt? I may have a private audience with the daughter of Janaka.
bhūtāścārthā vipadyantē dēśakālavirōdhitāḥ.

viklabaṅ dūtamāsādya tamaḥ sūryōdayē yathā৷৷5.2.39৷৷


viklabam one who has no sense, dūtam messenger, āsādya is after getting, dēśakālavirōdhitāḥ set in opposition to proper time and place, bhūtāḥ it plan, arthā: the planned strategies, sūryōdayē at the time of Sunrise, tamaḥ yathā like darkness, vipadyantē will be destroyed.

'Just as darkness disappears at Sunrise, well-planned strategies also fail at the hands of a thoughtless messenger when they are set in opposition to proper time and place.
arthānarthāntarē buddhirniścitāpi na śōbhatē.

ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ৷৷5.2.40৷৷


niścitā api even though decided, buddhi: intelligent, arthānarthāntarē between a proper course of action and inaction, na śōbhatē not look nice, paṇḍitamāninaḥ clever and capable, dūtāḥ messengers, kāryāṇi efforts, ghātayanti hi will spoil.

'Even though messengers are not intelligent, they think themselves clever and capable. They act foolishly, swerve from proper course of action and fail in their effort.
na vinaśyētkathaṅ kāryaṅ vaiklabyaṅ na kathaṅ bhavēt.

laṅghanaṅ ca samudrasya kathaṅ nu na vṛthā bhavēt৷৷5.2.41৷৷


kāryam effort, katham how, vinaśyēt not be destroyed, vaiklabyam thoughtlessness, katham how, na bhavēt will not be, samudrasya ocean's, laṅghanaṅ ca croosing, kathaṅ nu how indeed, vṛthā waste, na bhavēt not become?

'How should the task be performed? How to avoid impetuousness? How can my purpose of crossing the ocean be not wasted?
mayi dṛṣṭē tu rakṣōbhī rāmasya viditātmanaḥ.

bhavēdvyarthamidaṅ kāryaṅ rāvaṇānarthamicchataḥ৷৷5.2.42৷৷


mayi I am, rakṣōbhiḥ by the demons, dṛṣṭē tu seen, rāvaṇānartham destruction of Ravana, icchataḥ desiring, viditātmanaḥ divine knowledge, rāmasya Rama's, idam this, kāryam plan, vyartham wasted, bhavēt will be.

'If I am seen by the demons, the plan of Rama, possessor of self-knowledge, to kill Ravana, will be wasted.
na hi śakyaṅ kvacit sthātumavijñātēna rākṣasaiḥ.

api rākṣasarūpēṇa kimutānyēna kēnacit৷৷5.2.43৷৷


rākṣasaiḥ by demons, avijñātēna without being identified, rākṣasarūpēṇāpi even by assuming the form of a demon, kvacit anywhere, sthātum to stay with them, na śakyaṅ hi not be possible, anyēna in other form, kēnacit by any form, kimuta what to say.

'It is difficult to stay with the demon anywhere here even in the disguise of a demon without being identified. It will not be possible to remain unidentified even by assuming any other form.
vāyurapyatra nājñātaścarēditi matirmama.

na hya styaviditaṅ kiñcidrākṣasānāṅ balīyasām৷৷5.2.44৷৷


atra here, vāyurapi even wind, ajñātaḥ without being detected, na carēt may not move, iti thus, mama my, matiḥ thought, balīyasām the powerful, rākṣasānām of demons, aviditaṅ unknown, kiñcit even a little indeed, nāsti hi not.

'I think even the wind who has no form cannot move here without being detected. Nothing escapes the notice of powerful demons. There is nothing unknown to them.
ihāhaṅ yadi tiṣṭhāmi svēna rūpēṇa saṅvṛtaḥ.

vināśamupayāsyāmi bharturarthaśca hīyatē৷৷5.2.45৷৷


aham I, svēna with my own, rūpēṇa with form, saṅvṛtaḥ hidden, iha here, tiṣṭhāmi yadi if I stay, vināśam death, upayāsyāmi will befall me, bhartuḥ lord, arthaśca work also, hīyatē will fail.

'I will surely meet with death if I hide here in my original form and my master's mission also will be spoilt.
tadahaṅ svēna rūpēṇa rajanyāṅ hrasvatāṅ gataḥ.

laṅkāmabhipatiṣyāmi rāghavasyārthasiddhayē৷৷5.2.46৷৷


tat therefore, aham I, svēna rūpēṇa in my own form, hrasvatām in a tiny form, gataḥ assuming, rāghavasya Rama's, arthasiddhayē to accomplish, rajanyām in the night, laṅkām Lanka, abhipatiṣyāmi I shall jump.

'Therefore I shall transform myself into a tiny form and jump about the city of Lanka during night time in order to accomplish Raghava's purpose.
rāvaṇasya purīṅ rātrau praviśya sudurāsadām.

vicinvan bhavanaṅ sarvaṅ drakṣyāmi janakātmajām৷৷5.2.47৷৷


sudurāsadām quite inaccessible, purīm city, rātrau at night, praviśya after entering, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, sarvam all, bhavanam palace, vicinvan search all over, janakātmajām Janaka's daughter, Sita, drakṣyāmi I will see.

'Entering by night the inaccessible city of Ravana, I shall search all over the palace and find Sita'.
iti sañcintya hanumān sūryasyāstamayaṅ kapiḥ.

ācakāṅkṣē tadā vīrō vaidēhyā darśanōtsukaḥ৷৷5.2.48৷৷


vīraḥ kapiḥ heroic vanara, hanumān Hanuman, iti thus, sañcintya after thinking, vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, darśanōtsukaḥ keen to see, tadā then, sūryasya Sun's, astamayam setting time, ācakāṅkṣē looked forward.

Having planned in that manner the heroic Hanuman keen to see Sita waited for the Sunset.
sūryē cāstaṅ gatē rātrau dēhaṅ saṅkṣipya mārutiḥ.

pṛṣadaṅśakamātraḥ san babhūvādbhutadarśanaḥ৷৷5.2.49৷৷


sūryē when the Sun, astaṅgatē ca set, mārutiḥ son of the wind-god Maruti, rātrau in the night, dēham body, saṅkṣipya after reducing to small size, pṛṣadaṅśakamātraḥ san not bigger than the size of a cat, adbhutadarśanaḥ wonderful to behold, babhūva appeared.

When Sun set, Maruti, the son of the Wind-god, reduced himself at night to the small size of a cat, wonderful to behold.
pradōṣakālē hanumāṅstūrṇamutplutya vīryavān.

pravivēśa purīṅ ramyāṅ suvibhaktamahāpathām৷৷5.2.50৷৷


vīryavān courageous, hanumān Hanuman, pradōṣakālē at dusk, tūrṇam at once, utlputya jumped, suvibhaktamahāpathām a place well laid-out/great royal path, ramyām beautiful, purīm city, pravivēśa entered.

As soon as dusk had set in, courageous Hanuman jumped in and entered the well laid-out royal path of the beautiful city.
prāsādamālāvitatāṅ stambhaiḥ kāñcanarājataiḥ.

śātakumbhamayairjālairgantharvanagarōpamām৷৷5.2.51৷৷

saptabhaumāṣṭabhaumaiśca sa dadarśa mahāpurīm.

talaiḥ sphāṭikasaṅkīrṇaiḥ kārtasvaravibhūṣitaiḥ৷৷5.2.52৷৷


saḥ that, prāsādamālāvitatām stretched with a row of mansions, kāñcanarājataiḥ with gold and silver, stambhaiḥ with pillars, śātakumbhamayaiḥ made of gold, jālaiḥ fretwork, gandharvanagarōpamām resembling the city of gandharvas, saptabhaumāṣṭabhaumaiḥ ca seven and eight storied mansions, sphāṭikasaṅkīrṇaiḥ inlaid with crystals, kārtasvaravibhūṣitaiḥ decorated with gold, talaiḥ floors, mahāpurīm the grand city, dadarśa saw.

Hanuman saw the city stretched with rows of buildings all over,with seven or eight storied mansions, which had pillars of gold and silver, windows with fretwork of gold, inlaid with crystals, floors decorated with gold, resembling the grand city of gandharvas.
vaiḍūryamaṇicitraiśca muktājālavibhūṣitaiḥ.

talaiḥ śuśubhirē tāni bhavanānyatra rakṣasām৷৷5.2.53৷৷


atra here, rakṣasām of demons, bhavanāni mansions, vaiḍūryamaṇicitraiḥ inlaid with precious gems, muktājālavibhūṣitaiḥ fretwork ornamented with pearls, talaiḥ with floors, śuśubhirē looked splendid.

Inlaid with precious gems and fretwork, and ornamented with pearls, the mansions of demons looked splendid.
kāñcanāni ca citrāṇi tōraṇāni ca rakṣasām.

laṅkāmudyōtayāmāsuḥ sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtām৷৷5.2.54৷৷


rakṣasām of demons, kāñcanāni golden ones, citrāṇi colourful ones, tōraṇāni archways, samalaṅkṛtām decorated all over, laṅkām Lanka, sarvataḥ everywhere, udyōtayāmāsuḥ illumined.

The golden archways of the demon were colourful. They illuminated the well decorated Lanka from all sides.
acintyāmadbhutākārāṅ dṛṣṭavā laṅkāṅ mahākapiḥ.

āsīdviṣaṇṇō hṛṣṭaśca vaidēhyā darśanōtsukaḥ৷৷5.2.55৷৷


mahākapiḥ great vanara, acintyām unimaginable, adbhutākārām wonderful, laṅkām Lanka, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, darśanōtsukaḥ eager to see, viṣaṇṇaḥ sad, hṛṣṭaśca and glad, āsīt became.

Beholding Lanka of unimaginable, wonderful glory, the great monkey keen to see Sita became sad as well as elated at once (He did not know how to find Sita in that city and felt sad. But he was also elated that he was going to meet her at any cost.)
sa pāṇḍurāviddhavimānamālinīṅ mahārhajāmbūnadajālatōraṇām.

yaśasvinīṅ rāvaṇabāhupālitāṅ kṣapācarairbhīmabalaiḥ samāvṛtām৷৷5.2.56৷৷


pāṇḍurāviddhavimānamālinīm a city having a garland of white mansions with several floors, mahārhajāmbūnadajālatōraṇām the archways and windows latticed with gold strings, yaśasvinīm famed, bhīmabalaiḥ by warriors of terrific strength, kṣapācaraiḥ by demons, samāvṛtām surrounded, rāvaṇabāhupālitām ruled by Ravana.

He found that famed place with a garland of tall, white mansions, conspicuous with archways latticed with gold strings, protected by mighty Ravana and surrounded by terrific demons.
candrō.pi sācivyamivāsya kurvaṅstārāgaṇairmadhyagatō virājan.

jyōtsnāvitānēna vitatya lōka muttiṣṭhatē naikasahasraraśmi:৷৷5.2.57৷৷


naikasahasraraśmi: having thousands of rays, candrō.pi even the Moon, tārāgaṇaiḥ with multitude of stars, madhyagataḥ came in the centre, virājan illumining, lōkam the world, jyōtsnāvitānēna with a canopy of moon-light, vitatya having expanded, asya his, sācivyam ministerial assistance, kurvanniva as if to render, uttiṣṭhatē rises.

Even the Moon rose with thousands of rays in the centre of multitudes of stars overspreading and illumining the world with a canopy of bright beams, as if to render ministerial help to Hanuman.
śaṅkhaprabhaṅ kṣīramṛṇālavarṇa mudgacchamānaṅ vyavabhāsamānam.

dadarśa candraṅ sa haripravīraḥ pōplūyamānaṅ sarasīva haṅsam৷৷5.2.58৷৷


saḥ haripravīraḥ that heroic vanara, udgacchamānam rising up and looking, śaṅkhaprabham shining like the white conch, vyavabhāsamānam hiding and coming out, kṣīramṛṇālavarṇam like the colur of milk and lotus stalks, sarasi a lake, pōplūyamānam floating, haṅsamiva like a swan, candram the Moon, dadarśa saw.

The heroic vanara saw the rising Moon flitting in and out shining like a fresh white conch, in the colour of milk and lotus stalks, bright like a swan floating in the lake-like sky.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē dvitīyassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the second sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
