[Hanuman's confrontation with Lankini, the spirit of Lanka.]

sa lambaśikharē lambē lambatōyadasannibhē.

sattvamāsthāya mēdhāvī hanumān mārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.3.1৷৷

niśi laṅkāṅ mahāsattvō vivēśa kapikuñjaraḥ.

ramyakānanatōyāḍhyāṅ purīṅ rāvaṇapālitām৷৷5.3.2৷৷


mēdhāvī intelligent, mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, mahāsattvaḥ mighty, kapikuñjaraḥ elephant among vanaras, saḥ that, hanumān Hanuman, lambaśikharē on the Lamba peak, lambatōyadasannibhē resembling heavy rain-bearing cloud, lambē on Lamba, sattvam energy, āsthāya relying on, ramyakānanatōyāḍhyām rich in delightful forests, groves and pools, rāvaṇapālitām ruled by Ravana, laṅkāṅ purīm city of Lanka, niśi in the night, vivēśa entered.

The mighty son of the Wind-god, intelligent Hanuman, an elephant among vanaras, standing on the peak of the Lamba which looked like a high rain-bearing cloud and relying on his energy, entered by night the city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana rich in delightful forests, groves and water pools.
śāradāmbudharaprakhyairbhavanairupaśōbhitām.

sāgarōpamanirghōṣāṅ sāgarānilasēvitām৷৷5.3.3৷৷

supuṣṭabalasampuṣṭāṅ yathaiva viṭapāvatīm.

cārutōraṇaniryūhāṅ pāṇḍuradvāratōraṇām৷৷5.3.4৷৷

bhujagācaritāṅ guptāṅ śubhāṅ bhōgavatīmiva.

tāṅ sa vidyudghanākīrṇāṅ jyōtirmārganiṣēvitām৷৷5.3.5৷৷

mandamārutasañcārāṅ yathēndrasyāmarāvatīm.

śātakumbhēna mahatā prākārēṇābhisaṅvṛtām৷৷5.3.6৷৷

kiṅkiṇījālaghōṣābhiḥ patākābhiralaṅkṛtām.

āsādya sahasā hṛṣṭaḥ prākāramabhipēdivān৷৷5.3.7৷৷


śāradāmbhudharaprakhyaiḥ like autumnal clouds, bhavanaiḥ mansions, upaśōbhitām beautiful, sāgarōpamanirghōṣām sounds of the roar of the sea, sāgarānilasēvitām served by the sea breeze, supuṣṭabalasampuṣṭām strong with well-nourished army, viṭapāvatīṅ yathaiva just as Vitapavati, cārutōraṇaniryūhām stationed at the beautiful archways, pāṇḍuradvāratōraṇām provided with white gates and archs, bhujagācaritām inhabited by snakes, guptām protected, śubhām auspicious, bhōgavatīmiva just as Bhogavati (Patala), the abode of serpents, savidyudghanākīrṇām overcast with clouds pierced by glittering streaks of lightning, jōtirmārganiṣēvitām served by planets and stars, mandamārutasañcārām winds blowing mild (out of fear of Ravana), indrasya Indra's, amarāvatīṅ yathā like the city of Amaravati, śātakumbhēna with golden, mahatā great, prākārēṇa with rampart, abhisaṅvaṛtām adorned everywhere, kiṅkiṇījālaghōṣābhiḥ with jingling sounds of small bells, patākābhiḥ with flags, alaṅkṛtām decorated, tām that, sahasā at once, āsādya having reached, hṛṣṭaḥ was thrilled, prākāram the rampart, abhipēdivān surveyed.

Hanuman, happy to reach Lanka, stood on its rampart and surveyed the city of land which was splendid with beautiful mansions overcast with autumnal clouds pierced by glittering streaks of lightning, served by planets and stars with mild winds blowing (out of fear of Ravana), with the roaring sounds of the sea and with a well-fed army like Vitapavati (that is Alaka, the capital of Kubera, half-brother of Ravana and the treasurer of celestials), which had elephants sationed at the outer gates, provided with white archways and protected by serpents like the auspicious city of Bhogavati (capital of Patala). Surrounded by a golden rampart, the city resembled Amaravati, the capital of Indra, decorated with flags fluttering, echoing with the jingling sounds of small bells.
vismayāviṣṭahṛdayaḥ purīmālōkya sarvataḥ.

jāmbūnadamayairdvārairvaiḍūryakṛtavēdikaiḥ৷৷5.3.8৷৷

vajrasphaṭikamuktābhirmaṇikuṭṭimabhūṣitaiḥ.

taptahāṭakaniryūhai rājatāmalapāṇḍuraiḥ৷৷5.3.9৷৷

vaiḍhūryakṛtasōpānaiḥ sphāṭikāntarapāṅsubhiḥ.

cārusaṅjavanōpētaiḥ khamivōtpatitaiḥ śubhaiḥ৷৷5.3.10৷৷

krauñcabarhiṇasaṅghuṣṭaiḥ rājahaṅsa niṣēvitaiḥ.

tūryābharaṇanirghōṣaiḥ sarvataḥ pratināditām৷৷5.3.11৷৷

vasvaukasārāpratimāṅ tāṅ vīkṣya nagarīṅ tataḥ.

khamivōtpatituṅ kāmāṅ jaharṣa hanumān kapiḥ৷৷5.3.12৷৷


purīm the city, sarvataḥ all over, ālōkya surveying, vismayāviṣṭahṛdayaḥ wonder-struck at heart, tataḥ then, kapiḥ vanara, hanumān Hanuman, jambūnadamayaiḥ full of gold, dvāraiḥ shutters, vaiḍhūryakṛtavēdikaiḥ platforms encrusted with vaidurya, vajrasphaṭikamuktābhiḥ with diamonds, crystals and pearls, maṇikuṭṭimabhūṣitaiḥ studded with gems, taptahāṭakaniryūhaiḥ made of molten gold, rājatāmalapāṇḍuraiḥ pure white silver floors, vaiḍhūryakṛtasōpānaiḥ stairs-cases encrusted with vaidurya, sphāṭikāntarapāṅsubhiḥ covered with crystal grains, cārusaṅjavanōpētaiḥ with lovely quadrangles, krauñcabarhiṇasaṅghuṣṭaiḥ echoing with sounds of Krauncha birds and Peacocks, rājahaṅsaniṣēvitaiḥ inhabited by royal swans, kham sky, utpatitairiva rising into the sky, śubhaiḥ auspicious, tūryābharaṇanirghōṣaiḥ filled with sounds of musical instruments, sarvataḥ all over, pratināditām resounding, vasvaukasārapratimām like the replica of the city of Vaswokasara, kham sky, utpatitām iva as if risen, tām that, laṅkāṅ nagarīm city of Lanka, vīkṣya gazing, jaharṣa rejoiced.

Surveying all over, Hanuman was wonder-struck to see as though it was leaping into the sky. The city had golden shutters, altars encrusted with vaidurya, mansions inlaid with diamonds, crystals, pearls and other gems, crowned with pure gold and silver. The staircases built with silver were studded with vaidurya. The beautiful quadrangles, coverd with grains of crystal were as though leaping into the air. It echoed with sounds of krauncha birds, peacocks and royal swans. Filled with sounds of musical instruments, it resembled the city of Vaswokasara.
tāṅ samīkṣya purīṅ ramyāṅ rākṣasādhipatēḥ śubhām.

anuttamāmṛddhiyutāṅ cintayāmāsa vīryavān৷৷5.3.13৷৷


vīryavān valiant, anuttamām excellent, ṛddhiyutām prosperous, ramyām enchanting, śubhām auspicious, rākṣasādhipatēḥ of the king of demons, tāṅ purīm that city, samīkṣya gazing, cintayāmāsa reflected:

Gazing at the enchanting, auspicious, prosperous city of the king of demons mighty Hanuman began to reflect:
nēyamanyēna nagarī śakyā dharṣayituṅ balāt.

rakṣitā rāvaṇabalairudyatāyudhadhāribhiḥ৷৷5.3.14৷৷


udyatāyudhadhāribhiḥ ready to fight, rāvaṇabalaiḥ by Ravana's forces, rakṣitā protected, iyaṅ nagarī this city, anyēna by others, balāt with force, dharṣayitum to attack, na śakyā not posible.

'It is not possible to attack this city by to outsiders as it is protected by the forces of Ravana with their weapons ready(to attack).
kumudāṅgadayōrvāpi suṣēṇasya mahākapēḥ.

prasiddhēyaṅ bhavēdbhūmirmaindadvividayōrapi৷৷5.3.15৷৷


iyam this, bhūmiḥ land, kumudāṅgadayōrvāpi by Kumuda and Angada, mahākapēḥ of the great vanara, suṣēṇasya for Sushena, maindadvividayōrapi for Mainda and Dvivida also, prasiddhā may be accessible, bhavēt be.

'This land can be reached by Kumuda and Angada or the great vanara Sushena and even by Mainda and Dvivida.
vivasvatastanūjasya harēśca kuśaparvaṇaḥ.

ṛkṣasya kapimukhyasya mama caiva gatirbhavēt৷৷5.3.16৷৷


vivasvataḥ Sun's, tanūjasya of the son, harēḥ monkey's, kuśaparvaṇaḥ of Kushaparva, kapimukhyasya of the chief of vanaras, kētumālasya for Ketumala, ṛkṣasya for Riksha (Jambavan) also, mama caiva for me also, gatiḥ within reach, bhavēt will be.

'Son of Vivaswan (Sugriva), the chief of vanaras, Kushaparva, Riksha (Jambavan) and myself also will be able to reach this place.
samīkṣya tu mahābāhū rāghavasya parākramam.

lakṣmaṇasya ca vikrāntamabhavat prītimān kapiḥ৷৷5.3.17৷৷


kapiḥ vanara, mahābāhu: long-armed, rāghavasya Raghava's, parākramam valour, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, vikrāntaṅ ca valiant advances, samīkṣya after considering, prītimān pleased, abhavat felt.

Reflecting upon the valour of long-armed Rama and valiant advances of Lakshmana Hamuman felt pleased (within himself).
tāṅ ratnavasanōpētāṅ kōṣṭhāgārāvataṅsakām.

yantrāgārastanīmṛddhāṅ pramadāmiva bhūṣitām৷৷5.3.18৷৷

tāṅ naṣṭatimirāṅ dīptairbhāsvaraiśca mahāgṛhaiḥ.

nagarīṅ rākṣasēndrasya sa dadarśa mahākapiḥ৷৷5.3.19৷৷


saḥ mahākapiḥ the great vanara, ratnavasanōpētām clad in robes studded with gems, kōṣṭhāgārāvataṅsakām stable houses as her ear-rings, yantrāgārām armouries, ṛddhām breasts, bhūṣitām ornamented, pramadāmiva like a young maiden, dīptai: by glittering ones, bhāsvaraiśca by glowing, mahāgṛhaiḥ by great mansions, naṣṭatimirām dispelled darkness, tām hero, rākṣasēndrasya demon king's, nagarīm city, dadarśa saw.

Hanuman looked at the city of the demon king, whose darkness was dispelled by bright gems and mighty mansions as if it were a young maiden. The prosperous city was like a well decorated woman, adorned with ornaments having walls for her dress,
the stables for her ear-rings, the armouries for her breasts.
tha sā hariśārdūlaṅ praviśantaṅ mahābalam.

nagarī svēna rūpēṇa dadarśa pavanātmajam৷৷5.3.20৷৷


atha then, sā nagarī that city, hariśārdūlam tiger among vanaras, mahābalam of great prowess, pavanātmajam son of the Wind-god, praviśantam while he entered, svēna in her real, rūpēṇa form, dadarśa saw.

Assuming her real form the presiding deity of Lanka noticed the son of the Wind-god, the tiger among vanaras of great prowess entering the city.
sā taṅ harivaraṅ dṛṣṭvā laṅkā rāvaṇapālitā.

svayamēvōtthitā tatra vikṛtānanadarśanā৷৷5.3.21৷৷


rāvaṇapālitā ruled by Ravana, sā laṅkā that Lanka, taṅ harivaram that best of vanaras, tatra there, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, vikṛtānanadarśanā appeared with a distorted face, svayamēva herself, utthitā rose.

Seeing the best of vanaras, the deity of the city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana rose up before him in a distorted form.
purastātkapivaryasya vāyusūnōratiṣṭhata.

muñcamānā mahānādamabravītpavanātmajam৷৷5.3.22৷৷


kapivaryasya at the great vanara, vāyusūnōḥ of the son of the Wind-god, purastāt in front of, atiṣṭhata stood, mahānādam loud sound, muñcamānā while producing, pavanātmajam to the son of the Wind-god, abravīt said.

She stood in front of the son of the Wind-god and spoke to him in a loud voice.
kastvaṅ kēna ca kāryēṇa iha prāptō vanālaya.

kathayasvēha yattattvaṅ yāvatprāṇā dharanti tē৷৷5.3.23৷৷


vanālaya one who dwells in the forest, tvam you, kaḥ who are you, kēna kāryēṇa for what purpose, iha here, prāptaḥ arrived, tē your, prāṇāḥ life, yāvat until, dharanti hold on, iha here, tattvam truth, yat that, kathayasva reveal.

"O dweller of the forest, who are you? Why did you come here? Speak the truth about your identity, so long as you hold on to your life.
na śakyaṅ khalviyaṅ laṅkā pravēṣṭuṅ vānara tvayā.

rakṣitā rāvaṇabalairabhiguptā samantataḥ৷৷5.3.24৷৷


vānara vanara, rāvaṇabalaiḥ by Ravana's army, rakṣitā protected, samantataḥ everywhere, abhiguptā kept secret, iyaṅ laṅkā this Lanka, tvayā by you, pravēṣṭum to enter, na śakyaṅ khalu surely not possible.

"O vanara! this Lanka is a secret place protected by Ravana's army everywhere. It is surely not possible for you to enter this city".
atha tāmabravīdvīrō hanumānagrataḥ sthitām.

kathayiṣyāmi tē tattvaṅ yanmāṅ tvaṅ paripṛcchasi৷৷5.3.25৷৷


atha now, vīraḥ hero, hanumān Hanuman, agrataḥ in front, sthitām standing, tām her, abravīt spoke, yat since, tvam you, mām me, paripṛcchasi you are enquiring, tattvam truly, tē to you, kathayiṣyāmi I will tell.

Then Hanuman who was standing in front of her said, "I will tell you the truth since you are asking me".
kā tvaṅ virūpanayanā puradvārē.vatiṣṭhasi.

kimarthaṅ cāpi māṅ ruddhvā nirbhartsayasi dāruṇā৷৷5.3.26৷৷


puradvārē at the gate of the city, avatiṣṭhasi stands, virūpanayanā woman of ugly distorted eyes, tvam you, kā who are, dāruṇā dreadful, mām me, ruddhvā after obstructing, kimartham why, nirbhartsayasi threatening.

"Who are you, terrible woman of ugly, distorted eyes? Why are you obstructing me at the gate of the city? Why do you impound upon me?
hanumadvacanaṅ śrutvā laṅkā sā kāmarūpiṇī.

uvāca vacanaṅ kruddhā paruṣaṅ pavanātmajam৷৷5.3.27৷৷


kāmarūpiṇī one who can assume any form at free will, sā laṅkā that Lanka, hanumadvacanam Hanuman's words, śrutvā on hearing, kruddhā enraged, pavanātmajam son of Wind-god, paruṣam harsh, vacanam words, uvāca spoke.

The spirit of Lanka who could assume any form at her will got enraged on hearing the words of Hanuman and spake in a harsh tone.;
ahaṅ rākṣasarājasya rāvaṇasya mahātmanaḥ.

ājñāpratīkṣā durdharṣā rakṣāmi nagarīmimām৷৷5.3.28৷৷


rākṣasarājasya demon king's, mahātmanaḥ of the great self, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, ājñāpratīkṣā waiting for his orders, durdharṣā unassailable, aham I, imāṅ nagarīm this city, rakṣāmi Iam protecting.

"In obedience to the orders of the great demon king, Ravana, I am protecting this unassailable city.
na śakyā māmavajñāya pravēṣṭuṅ nagarī tvayā.

adya prāṇaiḥ parityaktaḥ svapsyasē nihatō mayā৷৷5.3.29৷৷


mām myself, avajñāya after ignoring, nagarī into this city, tvayā by you, pravēṣṭum to enter, na śakyā
not possible, adya now, mayā by me, nihataḥ slayed, prāṇaiḥ life, parityaktaḥ giving up life, svapsyasē you will attain eternal sleep.

"It is not possible for you to enter this city ignoring my presence. Soon you will be killed. You will give up your life and attain eternal sleep.
ahaṅ hi nagarī laṅkā svayamēva plavaṅgama.

sarvataḥ parirakṣāmi hyētattē kathitaṅ mayā৷৷5.3.30৷৷


plavaṅgama monkey, aham I, svayam myself, laṅkānagarī city of Lanka, sarvataḥ all over, parirakṣāmi I will be protecting, ētat as such, tē to you, mayā by me, kathitaṅ hi is told.

"O monkey! I am the presiding ogress of Lanka presenting myself personally. I am to protect this city. This is my answer to you".
laṅkāyā vacanaṅ śrutvā hanumān mārutātmajaḥ.

yatnavānsa hariśrēṣṭhaḥ sthitaśśaila ivāparaḥ৷৷5.3.31৷৷


mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hariśrēṣṭhaḥ best of the monkeys, saḥ he, hanumān Hanuman, laṅkāyāḥ Lanka's, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, yatnavān he got ready, aparaḥ another, śailaḥ mountain, sthitaḥ stood, iva like.

On hearing the words of ogress of Lanka, the son of the Wind-god stood up ready and appeared like another mountain.
sa tāṅ strīrūpavikṛtāṅ dṛṣṭavā vānarapuṅgavaḥ.

ābabhāṣē.tha mēdhāvī sattvavān plavagarṣabhaḥ৷৷5.3.32৷৷


atha and then, mēdhāvī wise one, sattvavān powerful, plavagarṣabhaḥ a bull among vanaras, vānarapuṅgavaḥ chief of vanaras, saḥ that, strīrūpavikṛtām monster of a woman, tām her, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, ābabhāṣē spoke.

Seeing the monster of a woman, the powerful Hanuman, bull among vanaras endowed with wisdom spoke to her.
drakṣyāmi nagarīṅ laṅkāṅ sāṭṭaprākāratōraṇām.

nirviśaṅkamimaṅlōkaṅ paśyantyāstavasāṅpratam.

ityarthamiha saṅprāptaḥ paraṅ kautūhalaṅ hi mē৷৷5.3.33৷৷


sāṭṭaprākāratōraṇām market-places, ramparts and gateways, nirviśaṅkam freely, imaṅ lōkaṅ this world, laṅkāṅ nagarīm Lanka city, drakṣyāmi I see, ityartham for this reason, iha here, saṅprāptaḥ I came here, mē to myself, param great, kautūhalaṅ hi curiosity

"I would like to see this Lanka with market-places, gateways and ramparts. I have come here for that purpose. My curiosity has been roused to see this place.
vanānyupavanānīha laṅkāyāḥ kānanāni ca.

sarvatō gṛhamukhyāni draṣṭumāgamanaṅ hi mē৷৷5.3.34৷৷


laṅkāyāḥ Lanka's, vanāni gardens, upavanāni groves, kānanāni ca and even forests, sarvataḥ all over, gṛhamukhyāni important houses, draṣṭum to see, iha here, mē myself, āgamanaṅ hi have arrived.

"I have arrived here to see Lanka's gardens, groves and forests and also all the important houses".
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā laṅkā sā kāmarūpiṇī.

bhūya ēva punarvākyaṅ babhāṣē paruṣākṣaram৷৷5.3.35৷৷


kāmarūpiṇī one who can assume any form at free will, laṅkā Lanka, tasya his, tat that, vacanam words, śrutvā after hearing, punaḥ again, bhūyaḥ ēva more, vākyam words, paruṣākṣaram in harsh words, babhāṣē spoke.

On hearing Hanuman, the ogress of Lanka, who could assume any form, replied in harsh words:
māmanirjitya durbuddhē rākṣasēśvarapālitāṅ.

na śakyamadya tē draṣṭuṅ purīyaṅ vānarādhama৷৷5.3.36৷৷


durbuddhē O evil-minded one!, vānarādhama foolish monkey, mām me, anirjitya without conquering me, rākṣasēśvarapālitāṅ ruled by the demon king, iyaṅ purī this city, adya now, draṣṭum to see, tē by you, na śakyam not possible.

"O evil-minded, foolish monkey! It is not possible for you to enter the city ruled by Ravana, the king of demons without conquering me".
tataḥ sa kapiśārdūlastāmuvāca niśācarīm.

dṛṣṭvā purīmimāṅ bhadrē punaryāsyē yathāgatam৷৷5.3.37৷৷


tataḥ then, saḥ that, kapiśārdūla: tiger among monkeys, tām her, niśācarīm night-walker, uvāca said, bhadrē O noble one, imām this, purīm city, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, punaḥ again, yathāgatam as I came, yāsyē I will go .

The tiger among monkeys said to the, the night-walker "O noble Lanka! I shall see this city and go back".
tataḥ kṛtvā mahānādaṅ sā vai laṅkā bhayāvaham.

talēna vānaraśrēṣṭhaṅ tāḍayāmāsa vēgitā৷৷5.3.38৷৷


tataḥ then, sā laṅkā that Lanka, bhayāvaham frightening, mahānādam loud noise, kṛtvā after making, vēgitā with speed, vānaraśrēṣṭham best vanara, talēna with her palm, tāḍayāmāsa struck.

Then the ogress of Lanka made a loud and frightening sound and struck the most powerful vanara with the palm of her hand.
tataḥ sa kapiśārdūlō laṅkayā tāḍitō bhṛśam.

nanāda sumahānādaṅ vīryavān pavanātmajaḥ৷৷5.3.39৷৷


tataḥ then, laṅkayā by Lanka, bhṛśam very much (badly), tāḍitaḥ hit, vīryavān heroic one, pavanātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, saḥ kapiśārdūlaḥ that tiger among vanaras, sumahānādam loud noise, nanāda made.

At this strong slap, the heroic Hanuman, son of the Wind-god roared loudly.
tataḥ saṅvartayāmāsa vāmahastasya sō.ṅgulīḥ.

muṣṭinā৷৷bhijaghānaināṅ hanumān krōdhamūrchitaḥ৷৷5.3.40৷৷

strī cēti manyamānēna nātikrōdhaḥ svayaṅ kṛtaḥ.


tataḥ then, saḥ that, hanumān Hanuman, krōdhamūrchitaḥ overcome by anger, vāmahastasya left hand, aṅgulīḥ fingers, saṅvartayāmāsa clenched, ēnām her, muṣṭinā with his fist, abhijaghāna hit her, strī ca iti that she is a woman, manyamānēna considering, svayam himself, atikrōdhaḥ outrageous, na kṛtaḥ did not develop.

Overcome by anger, Hanuman clenched the fingers of his left hand and hit her with his fist. Considering her to be, after all, a woman he did not turn outrageous.
sā tu tēna prahārēṇa vihvalāṅgī niśācarī৷৷5.3.41৷৷

papāta sahasā bhūmau vikṛtānanadarśanā.


sā that, niśācarī tu night roamer, tēna prahārēṇa that stroke, vihvalāṅgī her limbs shattered, sahasā at once, bhūmau on the, papāta fell, vikṛtānanadarśanā with her face distorted.

Struck by the blow of Hanuman the demoness fell down on the ground at once, her limbs shattered, her face distorted.
tatastu hanumān prājñastāṅ dṛṣṭvā vinipātitām৷৷5.3.42৷৷

kṛpāṅ cakāra tējasvī manyamānaḥ striyaṅ tu tām.


tataḥ then, prājñaḥ wise, tējasvī brilliaint, hanumān Hanuman, vinipātitām fallen woman, tām her, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, tām her, striyam is a woman, manyamānaḥ thinking in the mind, kṛpām compassion, cakāra showed.

Wise and brilliant Hanuman, seeing the deity fallen down, left her (without killing her) out of compassion, thinking that she is a woman, after all.
tatō vai bhṛśasaṅvignā laṅkā sā gadgadākṣaram৷৷5.3.43৷৷

uvācāgarvitaṅ vākyaṅ hanūmantaṅ plavaṅgamam.


tataḥ then, sā that, laṅkā Lanka, bhṛśasaṅvignā greatly agitated, gadgadākṣaram with choked voice, agarbitam deflated of pride, vākyam these words, plavaṅgamam to the monkey, hanūmantam to Hanuman, uvāca said.

Thereafter, the deflated demoness of Lanka with an agitated voice, said to Hanuman, the monkey-hero:
prasīda sumahābāhō trāyasva harisattama ৷৷5.3.44৷৷

samayē saumya tiṣṭhanti sattvavantō mahābalāḥ.


sumahābāhō O long-armed, harisattama great monkey, prasīda be gracious, trāyasva save me, saumya noble, sattvavantaḥ hero of great strength, mahābalāḥ strong, samayē when the time comes, tiṣṭhanti abide.

"O, strong-shouldered great monkey! be gracious. Save me. Heroes endowed with great strength stay back when the time comes.
ahaṅ tu nagarī laṅkā svayamēva plavaṅgama৷৷5.3.45৷৷

nirjitāhaṅ tvayā vīra vikramēṇa mahābala.


plavaṅgama O monkey!, ahaṅ tu I, on my part, svayam self, laṅkānagaryēva city of Lanka itself, mahābala O strong one, vīra O hero, aham I, tvayā by you, vikramēṇa with valour, nirjitā won.

"O monkey! I am Lanka incarnate. You have conquered me by your strength and valour.
idaṅ tu tathyaṅ śṛṇu vai bruvantyā mē harīśvara৷৷5.3.46৷৷

svayaṅbhuvā purā dattaṅ varadānaṅ yathā mama.


harīśvara O lord of vanaras!, purā in the past, mama to me, svayaṅbhuvā by the creator Brahma, yathā as, varadānam a boon, dattam given, idam this, tathyaṅ tu it is true, bruvantyā while I tell you, mē to my self, śṛṇu vai listen.

"O lord of vanaras! in the past Creator Brahma had given me a boon which has come true. I will tell you. listen.
yadā tvāṅ vānaraḥ kaścidvikramādvaśamānayēt৷৷5.3.47৷৷

tadā tvayā hi vijñēyaṅ rakṣasāṅ bhayamāgatam.


yadā when, kaścit one, vānaraḥ vanara, vikramāt by his prowess, tvām you, vaśam ānayēt vanquishes you,tadā then, rākṣasām for demons, bhayam danger, āgatam will set in, tvayā by you, vijñēyam know.

'When a vanara vanquishes you by his prowess, you may know that destruction of ogres will set in.
sa hi mē samayaḥ saumya prāptō.dya tava darśanāt৷৷5.3.48৷৷

svayaṅbhū vihitaḥ satyō na tasyāsti vyatikramaḥ.


saumya O gentle one!, adya today, tava your, darśanāt by your appearance, mē my, saḥ samayaḥ
that time, prāptaḥ approached, svayaṅbhūvihitaḥ this is ordained by Brahma, satyaḥ it is ture, tasya his words, vyatikramaḥ a different course of action, nāsti not possible.

"O gentle one! the time ordained by Brahma has come today with your presence here. The truth revealed by Brahma, the self-born, cannot be proved otherwise.
sītānimittaṅ rājñastu rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ৷৷5.3.49৷৷

rakṣasāṅ caiva sarvēṣāṅ vināśaḥ samupāgataḥ.


durātmanaḥ of the evil-minded, rājñaḥ of the king, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, sarvēṣām of all, rakṣasāṅ ca and demons, sītā nimittam caused by Sita, vināśaḥ ruin, samupāgataḥ has come.

"The ruin of all demons and evil-minded king Ravana will take place due to (the abduction of) Sita.
tatpraviśya hariśrēṣṭha purīṅ rāvaṇapālitām৷৷5.3.50৷৷

vidhatsva sarvakāryāṇi yāni yānīha vāñchasi.


hariśrēṣṭha O great vanara!, tat therefore, rāvaṇa pālitām ruled by Ravana, purīm city, praviśya after entering, iha here, yāni yāni whatever, vāñchasi you wish to do, sarvakāryāṇi all works, vidhatsva undertake.

"O great vanara! enter the city ruled by Ravana and accomplish your purpose.
praviśya śāpōpahatāṅ harīśvara śubhāṅ purīṅ rākṣasamukhyapālitām.

yadṛcchayā tvaṅ janakātmajāṅ satīṅ vimārga sarvatra gatō yathāsukham৷৷5.3.51৷৷


harīśvara O lord of vanaras!, śāpōpahatām doomed by curse, rākṣasamukhyapālitām ruled by the demon chief, śubhām auspicious, purīm city, yadṛcchayā freely, praviśya on entering, tvam you, sarvatra all over, gataḥ gone, yathāsukham with pleasure, satīm a chaste lady, janakātmajām daughter of Janaka, vimārgasva search.

"O lord of vanaras! you may search for the chaste lady, daughter of king Janaka all over freely entering this doomed city, ruled by the chief of demons.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyāṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē tṛtīyassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the third sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
