[Hanuman finds demons all over Lanka -- feels sad, unable to find Sita.]

tataḥ sa madhyaṅgatamaṅśumantaṅ jyōtsnāvitānaṅ mahadudvamantam.

dadarśa dhīmān divi bhānumantaṅ gōṣṭhē vṛṣaṅ mattamiva bhramantam৷৷5.5.1৷৷


tataḥ then, dhīmān intelligent, saḥ that, madhyaṅ gatam ascended to the centre (of the sky), aṅśumantam luminous lord, mahat great, jyōtsnāvitānam a canopy of moon-light, udvamantam spreading, gōṣṭhē in the stable, bhramantam moving about, mattam intoxicated, vṛṣamiva like a mighty bull, bhānumantam like Sun, divi in the sky, dadarśa saw.

Then intelligent Hanuman observed the Moon in the central part of the sky spreading a canopy of his luminescence like the Sun, and looking like an intoxicated mighty (white) bull moving in a stable.
lōkasya pāpāni vināśayantaṅ mahōdadhiṅ cāpi samēdhayantam.

bhūtāni sarvāṇi virājayantaṅ dadarśa śītāṅśumathābhiyāntam৷৷5.5.2৷৷


lōkasya world's, pāpāni agony, vināśayantam warding off, mahōdadhim great ocean, samēdhayantaṅ cāpi augmenting the ocean even, sarvāṇi all, bhūtāni creatures, virājayantam illuminating, abhiyāntam moving forward (the earth, space and sky), śītāṅśum Moon, dadarśa saw.

While moving forward, Hanuman saw the Moon spreading his light, thereby warding off the agony of all creatures, causing the swelling of the ocean and illuminating the earth as well as the sky.
yā bhāti lakṣmīrbhuvi mandarasthā tathā pradōṣēṣu ca sāgarasthā.

tathaiva tōyēṣu ca puṣkarasthā rarāja sā cāruniśākarasthā৷৷5.5.3৷৷


bhuvi on earth, yā that, lakṣmīḥ splendour (beauty), mandarasthā found on Mandara mountain,
bhāti glows, tathā so also, pradōṣēṣu at dusk, sāgarasthā found in the ocean, tathaiva the same, tōyēṣu in water, puṣkarasthā in lotuses in the lakes, sā such, cāruniśākarasthā is found in beautiful Moon, rarāja shone.

'The same splendour on the Mandara mountain on earth, which glows at dusk lay on the ocean is there, on lotuses in the lakes and on the beautiful Moon also.
haṅsō yathā rājatapañjarasthaḥ siṅhō yathā mandarakandarasthaḥ.

vīrō yathā garvitakuñjarastha candrō.pi babhrāja tathāmbarasthaḥ৷৷5.5.4৷৷


rājatapañjarasthaḥ found in a silver cage, haṅsaḥ swan, yathā like that, mandarakandarasthaḥ in the caves of Mandara mountain, siṅhaḥ lion, yathā like that, garvitakuñjarasthaḥ mounted on a proud elephant, vīraḥ hero, yathā like, ambarasthaḥ in the sky, candraḥ Moon, tathā in the same way, babhrāja looked very lustrous.

'Like a swan in a cage of silver, like a lion in a cave of Mandara mountain, like a hero on a proud, intoxicated elephant, the Moon shone in the sky.
sthitaḥ kakudmāniva tīkṣṇaśṛṅgō mahācalaḥ śvēta ivōccaśṛṅgaḥ.

hastīva jāmbūnadabaddhaśṛṅgō rarāja candraḥ paripūrṇaśṛṅgaḥ৷৷5.5.5৷৷


tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaḥ lofty peaks, sthitaḥ remaining, kakudmāniva horned bull, uccaśṛṅgaḥ tall peaks, śvētaḥ white, mahācalaḥ great mountain, jāmbūnadabaddhaśṛṅgaḥ gold plated tusks, hastīva like elephant, paripūrṇaśṛṅgaḥ complete with horn, candraḥ Moon, rarāja shone.

The full-moon with its horn-like spot shone like a bull with sharp horns, like the white Himalayan mountain with its lofty peaks, and like an elephant with gold plated tusks;
vinaṣṭaśītāmbutuṣārapaṅkō mahāgrahagrāhavinaṣṭapaṅkaḥ.

prakāśalakṣmyāśrayanirmalāṅka: rarāja candrō bhagavān śaśāṅkaḥ৷৷5.5.6৷৷


vinaṣṭaśītāmbutuṣārapaṅkaḥ with the dew formed with frost, mahāgrahagrāha vinaṣṭapaṅkaḥ the frost
destroyed by the great planet (Sun), prakāśalakṣmyāśrayanirmalāṅkaḥ the clean surface resting on graceful radiance, śaśāṅkaḥ the rabbit-like figure on Moon, bhagavān god, candraḥ Moon, rarāja shone.

With the Sun, the great planet (star), destroying the frost that forms the dew, the Moon with its stain shone with graceful radiance.
śilātalaṅ prāpya yathā mṛgēndrō mahāraṇaṅ prāpya yathā gajēndraḥ.

rājyaṅ samāsādya yathā narēndra stathāprakāśō virarāja candraḥ৷৷5.5.7৷৷


tathā prakāśaḥ effulgent, candraḥ Moon, mṛgēndraḥ lion, the lord of animals, śilātalam on a rock, prāpya having reached, yathā as, gajēndraḥ lord of elephants, mahāraṇam deep forest, prāpya after entering, yathā as, narēndra: lord of earth, rājyaṅ samāsādya on attaining kingdom, virarāja shone bright .

The Moon shone bright like a lion mounted on a rock, like a lordly elephant in a deep forest, like a king on attaining the kingdom.
prakāśacandrōdayanaṣṭadōṣaḥ pravṛttarakṣaḥ piśitāśadōṣaḥ.

rāmābhirāmēritacittadōṣaḥ svargaprakāśō bhagavān pradōṣaḥ৷৷5.5.8৷৷


prakāśacandrōdayanaṣṭadōṣaḥ the darkness dispelled with the rise of the radiant Moon, pravṛttarakṣaḥpiśitāśadōṣaḥ dark deeds dispelled, canibals started by their movement, rāmābhirāmēritacittadōṣaḥ the natural instinct for love among women is incited, bhagavān resplendent Moon, pradōṣaḥ dusk, svargaprakāśaḥ spread its bliss like heaven every where.

At the time of moon-rise, the darkness of dusk is dispelled, the dark deeds of cannibals disappear, the natural instinct for love returns to women as the radiance of the Moon spreads everywhere like in heaven.
tantrīsvanāḥ karṇasukhāḥ pravṛttāḥ svapanti nāryaḥ patibhiḥ suvṛttāḥ.

naktaṅcarāścāpi tathā pravṛttā: vihartumatyadbhutaraudravṛttāḥ৷৷5.5.9৷৷


karṇasukhāḥ pleasing to the ears, tantrīsvanāḥ sounds of string instruments, pravṛttāḥ started, suvṛttāḥ chaste, nāryaḥ women, patibhiḥ with their husbands, svapanti are sleeping, tathā likewise, atyadbhutaraudravṛttā: whose deeds were wonderful exhibiting their anger, naktaṅcarāścāpi night walkers also, vihartum to roam about, pravṛttāḥ started.

Pleasing sounds of string instruments had begun to be heard. Chaste women were found asleep with their husbands.The night-rangers had begun their strange (evil and cruel) deeds exhibiting their anger.
mattapramattāni samākulāni rathāśvabhadrāsanasaṅkulāni.

vīraśriyā cāpi samākulāni dadarśa dhīmān sa kapiḥ kulāni৷৷5.5.10৷৷


vīraḥ heroic, dhīmān intelligent, saḥ kapiḥ vanara Hanuman, mattapramattāni intoxicated and dull, samākulāni filled, rathāśvabhadrāsanasaṅkulāni filled with chariots, drawn by horses with choicest seats, śriyā cāpi also prosperous, samākulāni filled (scattered), kulāni houses, dadarśa observed.

Intelligent Hanuman, the great warrior, observed there in the prosperous mansions, demons proud of their wealth, highly intoxicated and dull, their houses full of horse-drawn chariots with comfortable seats.
parasparaṅ cādhikamākṣipanti bhujāṅśca pīnānadhikaṅ kṣipanti.

mattapralāpānadhikaṅ kṣipanti mattāni cānyōnyamadhikṣipanti৷৷5.5.11৷৷


parasparam among themselves, adhikam very much, ākṣipanti ridiculing each other, pīnān stout, bhujān ca arms and, adhikaṅ kṣipanti excessively throwing, adhikam highly, mattapralāpān intoxicated and blabbering, kṣipanti indulge in vulgar conversation, mattāni by intoxication, anyōnyaṅ one to the other, adhikṣipanti quarrelling.

The intoxicated demons were quarrelling, ridiculing one another bitterly and wildly throwing their stout arms on one another, indulging in incoherent talk, uttering vulgar words.
rakṣāṅsi vakṣāṅsi ca vikṣipanti gātrāṇi kāntāsu ca vikṣipanti.

rūpāṇi citrāṇi ca vikṣipanti dṛḍhāni cāpāni ca vikṣipanti৷৷5.5.12৷৷


vakṣāṅsi their chests, vikṣipanti expanding, kāntāsu women, gātrāṇi limbs, vikṣipanti placing, citrāṇi wonderful, rūpāṇi forms, vikṣipanti assuming, dṛḍhāni powerful , cāpāni bows, vikṣapanti drew, rakṣāṅsi demons.

The demons were seen expanding their chests sportively and caressing their wives by placing their limbs on them. They were assuming wonderful forms, and drawing their bows up to their ears.
dadarśa kāntāśca samālabhantya stathā parāstatra punaḥ svapantyaḥ.

surūpavaktrāśca tathā hasantyaḥ kruddhāḥ parāścāpi viniḥśvasantya৷৷5.5.13৷৷


kāntāḥ ca even women, samālabhantya collected there, tathā likewise, tatra there, aparāḥ punaḥ others again, svasantya sleeping women, tathā likewise, surūpavaktrāḥ women of beautiful countenance, hasantyaḥ laughing, parāḥ ca at others, kruddhāḥ angry, viniḥśvasantya: sighing, dadarśa saw.

He even saw women collected there, their limbs smeared with unguents on their bodies, like wise women with beautiful countenances laughing at others, some sleeping, and others hissing (sighing) like angry serpents.
mahāgajaiścāpi tathā nadadbhi: supūjitaiścāpi tathā susadbhiḥ.

rarāja vīraiśca viniḥśvasadbhiḥ hradō bhujaṅgairiva niḥśvasadbhiḥ৷৷5.5.14৷৷


tathā likewise, nadadbhiḥ trumpeting, mahāgajaiścāpi huge elephants, tathā likewise, supūjitaiḥ revered, susadbhiḥ cāpi by the well-kept ones, rarāja stood, viniḥśvasadbhaḥ those breathing heavily, vīraica: heroes, niḥśvasadbhiḥ by hissing, bhujaṅgaiḥ by serpents, hradaḥ iva like a lake, rarāja stood.

There were huge elephants trumpeting, respected people, warriors sighing for the lack of enemies (to vanquish). It had a lake infested with hissing snakes.
buddhipradhānān rucirābhidhānān saṅśraddhadhānān jagataḥ pradhānān.

nānāvidhānān rucirābhidhānān dadarśa tasyāṅ puri yātudhānān৷৷5.5.15৷৷


buddhipradhānān intellectuals, rucirābhidhānān who were sweet in expression, saṅśraddhadhānān who had faith in religion, jagataḥ in the world, pradhānān pre-eminent, nānā vidhānān heroes of different kinds, rucirābhidhānān of good practices, yātudhānān demons, tasyām in that, puri city, dadarśa saw.

He saw there in the city of Lanka, demons, who were intellectuals, pleasing in words, with faith in religion, pre-eminent heroes of the world of different kinds, followers of good practices and with lovely names.
nananda dṛṣṭvā sa ca tān surūpānnānāguṇānātmaguṇānurūpān.

vidyōtamānānsa tadānurūpān dadarśa kāṅścicca punarvirūpān৷৷5.5.16৷৷


saḥ that, surūpān handsome, nānāguṇān with many virtues, ātmaguṇānurūpān whose appearance was in accordance with their virtues, vidyōtamānān radiating, tān them, dṛṣṭvā seeing, nananda rejoiced, tadā then, saḥ he, virūpān ugly, anurūpān those having similar form, kāñścit ca and some indeed, punaḥ again, dadarśa saw.

He rejoiced to see the handsome demons radiant with forms commensurate with their virtues. He also saw some ugly figures, their traits in conformity to their forms.
tatō varārhāḥ suviśuddhabhāvā stēṣāṅ striyastatra mahānubhāvāḥ.

priyēṣu pānēṣu ca saktabhāvā dadarśa tārā iva suprabhāvāḥ৷৷5.5.17৷৷


tataḥ then, tatra there, varārhāḥ adorned with chiocest robes and ornaments, viśuddhabhāvāḥ women whose minds were pure, mahānubhāvāḥ magnanimous, priyēṣu attached to their lovers, pānēṣu ca and to drinking (wine), saktabhāvāḥ gentle, suprabhāvāḥ bright, tārāḥ iva like stars, tēṣāṅ striyaḥ their wives, dadarśa saw.

There he saw demonesses adorned with choicest ornaments, their minds attached faithfully to their husbands and bottles of wine. Some of the wives of the demons, however, looked gentle and bright like stars.
śriyā jvalantīstrapayōpagūḍhā niśīthakālē ramaṇōpagūḍhāḥ.

dadarśa kāścitpramadōpagūḍhā yathā vihaṅgāḥ kusumōpagūḍhāḥ৷৷5.5.18৷৷


śriyā with grace, jvalantī shining brightly, trapayā with shyness, upagūḍhāḥ embraced, niśīthakālē at night, ramaṇōpagūḍhāḥ embraced by the beloved, pramadōpagūḍhāḥ filled with joy, kusumōpagūḍhāḥ adorned with flowers, vihaṅgāḥ yathā like birds, kāścit indeed, dadarśa saw.

There he saw cheerful demonesses shining brightly, abashed by the embrace of their beloveds during the night. He also saw those sporting with their beloveds freely and looking like birds embracing flowers.
anyāḥ punarharmyatalōpaviṣṭā statra priyāṅkēṣu sukhōpaviṣṭāḥ.

bhartuḥ priyā dharmaparā niviṣṭā dadarśa dhīmān madanābhiviṣṭāḥ৷৷5.5.19৷৷


dhīmān Intelligent, harmyatalōpaviṣṭāḥ seated on the terraces of the mansions, tatra there, priyāṅkēṣu on the laps of their beloved ones, sukhōpaviṣṭāḥ seated happily, bhartuḥ husband's, priyāḥ beloveds, dharmaparāḥ attachment, madanābhiviṣṭāḥ overwhelmed with sexual pleasure, niviṣṭāḥ engaged in love, anyāḥ others, dadarśa he saw.

Intelligent Hanuman saw demonesses seated happily on the laps of their beloved ones on the terraces of the mansions, exhibiting their attachment to one another, overwhelmed with sexual pleasure.
aprāvṛtāḥ kāñcanarājivarṇāḥ kāścitparārthyāstapanīyavarṇāḥ.

punaśca kāścicchaśalakṣmavarṇāḥ kāntaprahīṇā rucirāṅgavarṇāḥ৷৷5.5.20৷৷


aprāvṛtāḥ without any veil, kāñcanarājivarṇāḥ of golden hue,parārthyāḥ altruistic demonesses, tapanīyavarṇāḥ shining with polished gold, kāścit a few, punaśca again, śaśalakṣmavarṇāḥ pale white
like the colour of Moon, kāścit a few, rucirāṅgavarṇāḥ of attractive complexion, kāntaprahīṇāḥ separated from their husbands.

Ogresses without veil, some altruistic, some separated from their husbands looked pale like the Moon, though possessed of polished gold complexion.
tataḥ priyān prāpya manōbhirāmāḥ suprītiyuktāḥ prasamīkṣyarāmāḥ.

gṛhēṣu hṛṣṭāḥ paramābhirāmāḥ haripravīraḥ sa dadarśa rāmāḥ৷৷5.5.21৷৷


haripravīraḥ eminent vanara, tataḥ then, manōbhirāmāḥ entieing, priyān loved ones, prāpya having obtained, suprītiyuktāḥ enjoying very much, prasamīkṣyarāmāḥ seeing those demonesses, paramābhirāmāḥ ecstatic, gṛhēṣu in the houses, hṛṣṭāḥ happily, rāmāḥ demonesses, saḥ he, dadarśa saw.

That heroic monkey saw ogresses delighted in the happy company of their loved ones who have joined them, ecstatic wives in the houses.
candraprakāśāśca hi vaktramālāḥ vakrākṣipakṣmāśca sunētramālāḥ.

vibhūṣaṇānāṅ ca dadarśa mālāḥ śatahradānāmiva cārumālāḥ৷৷5.5.22৷৷


candraprakāśāḥ radiating like the Moon, vaktramālāśca rows of faces, vakrākṣipakṣmāśca many with sidelong glances and graceful lashes, sunētramālāḥ rows of beautiful eyes, śatahradānām of lightning, cārumālāḥ many lovely rows, vibhūṣaṇānām of ornaments, mālāḥ ca and streaks.

He saw rows of faces of she-demons shining like moonlight with sidelong glances and graceful eye-lashes wearing ornaments resembling charmimg flashes of lightning.
na tvēva sītāṅ paramābhijātāṅ pathi sthitē rājakulē prajātām.

latāṅ prapullāmiva sādhu jātāṅ dadarśa tanvīṅ manasābhijātām৷৷5.5.23৷৷


paramābhijātām born in a noble family, pathi on the right path, sthitē abiding by, rājakulē in a royal family, prajātām born, sādhu excellent,jātām born,prapullām blossoming, latām iva like a
creeper, tanvīm a delicate beautiful lady, manasā through his mind, abhijātām of noble descent, sītāṅ tu and Sita, na dadarśa not seen.

Hanuman could not find Sita anywhere, an excellent lady born in a noble royal family, adopting the right path, a lady delicate like a blossoming creeper of good breed, or so he imagined.
sanātanē vartmani sanniviṣṭāṅ rāmēkṣaṇāṅ tāṅ madanābhiviṣṭām.

bharturmanaḥ śrīmadanupraviṣṭāṅ strībhyō varābhyaśca sadā viśiṣṭām৷৷5.5.24৷৷


sanātanē the eternal, vartmani on the path, sanniviṣṭām abiding, rāmēkṣaṇām a lady of beautiful eyes, madanābhiviṣṭām overwhelmed by love, śrīmat prosperous, bhartuḥ husband's, manaḥ in mind, anupraviṣṭām ever established, varābhyaḥ compared to the choicest women, strībhyaśca compared to wives, sadā ever, viśiṣṭām a distinguished demoness, tām her, na dadarśa not seen.

'Sita must have had a pair of beautiful eyes. She must have been a passionate lady with mind fixed on her glorious husband. Ever established in dharma, she is perhaps a distinguished lady compared to her counterparts (in Lanka).
uṣṇārditāṅ sānusṛtāsrakaṇṭhīm purā varārhōttamaniṣkakaṇṭhīm.

sujātapakṣmāmabhiraktakaṇṭhīṅ vanē.pravṛttāmiva nīlakaṇṭhīm৷৷5.5.25৷৷


uṣṇārditām shedding hot tears, sānusṛtāsrakaṇṭhīm with her throat choked with incessant tears, purā earlier, varārhōttamaniṣkakaṇṭhīm wearing costly ornaments on the neck, sujātapakṣmām who has beautiful eyelashes, abhiraktakaṇṭhīm a woman of sweet, loving voice, vanē in the forest, apravṛttām wandering, nīlakaṇṭhīmiva like a pea-hen.

She whose neck was adorned with costly ornaments earlier must be shedding hot tears now, her throat choked with grief. With her beautiful eyelashes and a sweet loving voice, she would be now like a pea-hen wandering in the woods.
avyaktarēkhāmiva candrarēkhāṅ pāṅsupradigdhāmiva hēmarēkhām.

kṣataprarūḍhāmiva bāṇarēkhāṅ vāyuprabhinnāmiva mēgharēkhām৷৷5.5.26৷৷


avyaktarēkhām an invisible ray, candrarēkhāmiva like the rays of the Moon, pāṅsupradigdhām covered with dust, hēmarēkhāmiva like a streak of gold, kṣataprarūḍhām scar of superficially healed wound, bāṇarēkhāmiva path of an arrow, vāyuprabhinnām swept off by the wind, mēgharēkhāmiva like a flake of cloud.

She would be like a barely visible ray of the Moon, like a streak of gold covered with dust, like an unhealed scar of a wound caused by an arrow only superficially covered and like a flake of cloud swept off by the wind.
sītāmapaśyan manujēśvarasya rāmasya patnīṅ vadatāṅ varasya.

babhūva duḥkhābhihataścirasya plavaṅgamō manda ivācirasya৷৷5.5.27৷৷


plavaṅgamaḥ monkey, vadatām among those who are good at speech, varasya of the best ones, manujēśvarasya of the lord of men, rāmasya Rama's, patnīm wife, sītām Sta, cirasya for a short while, apaśyan not able to find, duḥkhābhihitaḥ hit by grief, acirasya for a while, mandaḥ iva as though dull, babhūva became.

Hanuman stood grief-stricken, having (unsuccessfully) searched for a long time for the wife of Rama, the lord of men. The highly eloquent was now despondent. For a while he looked dull and dejected.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē pañcamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
