[Lakshmana arrives at Sugriva's cave-palace --- Lakshmana's anger over Sugriva's slackness --- monkeys fear Lakshamana.]

sa kāminaṅ dīnamadīnasattvaṅ

śōkābhipannaṅ samudīrṇakōpam.

narēndrasūnurnaradēvaputraṅ

rāmānujaḥ pūrvajamityuvāca4.31.1৷৷


narēndrasūnuḥ son of a king, saḥ he, rāmānujaḥ Rama's younger brother, kāminam love-sick, dīnam dejected, adīnasattvam indomitable hero, śōkābhipannam overcome by grief, samudīrṇakōpam very angry, naradēvaputram son of lord of the people, agrajam elder brother, iti this, uvāca spoke.

Seeing the indomitable hero, his elder brother, son of a king, love-sick, dejected and overcome by anger and grief, spoke prince Lakshmana:
na vānaraḥ sthāsyati sādhuvṛttē

na maṅsyatē karmaphalānuṣaṅgān.

na bhōjyatē vānararājyalakṣmīṅ

tathāhi nābhikramatē.sya buddhiḥ4.31.2৷৷


vānaraḥ monkey (Sugriva), sādhuvṛttē well conducted, sthāsyati abide, karmaphalānuṣaṅgān sharing fruits of action equally, maṅsyatē not recognised, vānararājyalakṣmīm prosperous kingship of the monkeys, na bhōjyatē not enjoy, tathāhi hence, asya his, buddhiḥ intellect, nābhikramatē not conducted in our favour (search of Sita)

'Sugriva has not stuck to the conduct of the virtuous, of sharing the fruits of action equally. He does not realize that he obtained the prosperous kingship of vanaras as a
result of your (friendly) action. He does not have the intelligence of conducting himself in your favour (of searching Sita). Therefore he will not enjoy the kingship for long.
matikṣayādgrāmyasukhēṣu sakta

stava prasādāpratikārabuddhiḥ.

hatō.grajaṅ paśyatu vīra! tasya

na rājyamēvaṅ viguṇasya dēyam4.31.3৷৷


vīra hero, tava your, prasādāpratikārabuddhiḥ ingratitude to the benefactor, matikṣayāt mind grown smaller, grāmyasukhēṣu in rustic, vulgar pleasures, saktaḥ engaged, hataḥ killed, agrajam elder brother, tasya his, paśyatu let him see, ēvam that way, viguṇasya desttitute of virtues, rājyam kingdom, na dēyam not to be given.

'O hero! he is too ungrateful to return the favour done to him, Engaged in rustic, vulgar pleasures, he is not thinking of it. Let him see his killed elder brother. Kingship should not be given to an individual who is a destitute of virtues.
na dhārayē kōpamudīrṇavēgaṅ

nihanmi sugrīvamasatyamadya.

haripravīraissaha vāliputrō

narēndrapatnyā vicayaṅ karōtu4.31.4৷৷


udīrṇavēgam overflow, kōpam anger, na dhārayē I do not hold, adya now, asatyam untruthful, sugrīvam Sugriva, nihanmi kill, vāliputraḥ Vali's son, haripravīraiḥ with foremost of monkeys, saha along with, narēndrapatnyāḥ queen, vicayam search, karōtu let him make.

'I cannot hold my overflowing anger. I shall kill this untruthful Sugriva. Let Vali's son along with the foremost of monkeys search for the queen (Sita).'
tamāttabāṇāsanamutpatantaṅ

nivēditārthaṅ raṇacaṇḍakōpam.

uvāca rāmaḥ paravīrahantā

svavēkṣitaṅ sānunayaṅ ca vākyam4.31.5৷৷


paravīrahantā a slayer of enemy heroes, rāmaḥ Rama, nivēditārtham who seek refuge, raṇacaṇḍakōpam fierce in war, āttabāṇāsanam wielding bow and arrow, utpatantam suddenly standing up, tam him, svavēkṣitam his own angle of vision, sānunayaṅ ca in a conciliatory tone, vākyam these words, uvāca spoke.

Rama, a slayer of enemy heroes but not of those who seek his refuge, spoke in a conciliatory tone to Lakshmana who jumped, wielding bow and arrows, inspired with his fierce fighting spirit.
na hi vai tvadvidhō lōkē pāpamēvaṅ samācarēt.

pāpamāryēṇa yō hanti sa vīraḥ puruṣōttamaḥ4.31.6৷৷


tvadvidhaḥ a man like you, lōkē in the world, ēvam in this way, pāpam sin, na samācarēt not commit, yaḥ whoever, āryēṇa of noble attitude, (kōpam anger), hanti kills, saḥ vīraḥ such a hero, puruṣōttamaḥ best of men

nēdamatra tvayā grāhyaṅ sādhuvṛttēna lakṣmaṇa!.

tāṅ prītimanuvartasva pūrvavṛttaṅ ca saṅgatam4.31.7৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana!, sādhuvṛttēna with good conduct, tvayā by you, atra here, idam thus, grāhyam keeping, tām that, prītim affection, pūrvavṛttam as earlier, saṅgataṅ ca also friendship, anuvartasva follow.

'O Lakshmana! with your good conduct you should not do so. Keeping in view the affectionate friendship extended (by Sugriva) earlier, be friendly.
sāmōpahitayā vācā rūkṣāṇi parivarjayan.

vaktumarhasi sugrīvaṅ vyatītaṅ kālaparyayē4.31.8৷৷


kālaparyayē not attempting timely action, vyatītam who exceeded, sugrīvam to Sugriva, rūkṣāṇi harsh, parivarjayan avoiding, sāmōpahitayā adopting conciliating, vācā with word, vaktum to speak, arhasi proper for you.

'Sugriva has exceeded the time limit. Avoiding harsh words, you ought to speak to him in a conciliatory manner.
sō.grajēnānuśiṣṭārthō yathāvatpuruṣarṣabhaḥ.

pravivēśa purīṅ vīrō lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā!4.31.9৷৷


agrajēna by the elder brother, yathāvat duly, anuśiṣṭārthaḥ briefed, puruṣarṣabhaḥ bull among men, paravīrahā! destroyer of enemies, vīraḥ hero, saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, purīm city, pravivēśa entered.

Having been duly briefed by his elder brother, the heroic Lakshmana, destroyer of enemies, a bull among men entered the city.
tataśśubhamatiḥ prājñō bhrātuḥ priyahitē rataḥ.

lakṣmaṇaḥ pratisaṅrabdhō jagāma bhavanaṅ kapēḥ4.31.10৷৷

śakrabāṇāsanaprakhyaṅ dhanuḥ kālāntakōpamaḥ.

pragṛhya giriśṛṅgābhaṅ mandaraḥ sānumāniva৷৷4.31.11৷৷


tataḥ then, śubhamatiḥ good hearted man, prājña: wise man, priyahitē benevolent person, rataḥ
involved, pratisamrabdhaḥ eager to please, kālāntakōpamaḥ resembling the anger of the god of death, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, śakrabāṇāsanaprakhyam comparable to the bow of Indra, giriśṛṅgābham like a mountain peak, dhanuḥ bow, pragṛhya holding, mandaraḥ Mandara, sānumāniva like mountain peak, kapēḥ monkey's, bhavanam to the mansion, jagāma went.

The noble-hearted, benevolent and wise Lakshmana, eager to please Rama, picked up his bow looking like a mountain peak, comparable to the bow of Indra and agitated with the anger of the god of Death entered the mansion of Sugriva which stood like the mountain peak of Mandara.
yathōktakārī vacanamuttaraṅ caiva sōttaram.

bṛhaspatisamō buddhyā matvā rāmānujastadā4.31.12৷৷

kāmakrōdhasamutthēna bhrātuḥ kōpāgninā vṛtaḥ.

prabhañjana ivāprītaḥ prayayau lakṣmaṇastadā4.31.13৷৷


tadā then, yathōktakārī obedient, rāmānujaḥ Rama's younger brother, bhrātuḥ brother's, kāmakrōdhasamutthēna inspired by love and anger, kōpāgninā by the fire of anger, vṛtaḥ encompassed, aprītaḥ displeased, buddhyā in his mind, bṛhaspatisamaḥ like Brihaspati, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, sōttaram answer to be given, uttaraṅ vacanam words of reply, matvā thinking over, tadā then, prabhañjana iva like stormy wind, prayayau marched.

Then Lakshmana, obedient, intelligent like Brihaspati, like a tempest, encompassed by the fire of anger and deliberating in his mind as to the possible questions from Sugriva and the reply from him.
sālatālāśvakarṇāṅśca tarasā pātayanbahūn.

paryasyangirikūṭāni drumānanyāṅśca vēgataḥ4.31.14৷৷

śilāśca śakalīkurvanpadbhyāṅ gaja ivāśugaḥ.

dūrāmēkapadaṅ tyaktvā yayau kāryavaśāddrutam4.31.15৷৷


āśugaḥ swift, gaja iva like an elephant, vēgataḥ speedily, tarasā vigorously, sālatālāśvakarṇāṅśca sala, tala, and asvakarna, pātayan felling trees, anyān and others, drumāṅśca trees, girikūṭāni mountain rocks, balāt forcibly, paryasyan turning them, padbhyām with his feet, śilāḥ rocks, śakalīkurvan breaking to pieces, dūram a distance, ēkapadē with one foot, tyaktvā pushing, kāryavaśāt to carry out the task, drutam quickly, yayau went.

'Lakshmana rushed on foot speedily, cutting the branches of sala, tala and asvakarna and other trees on the way and forcibly turning and crushing the mountain rocks into pieces with a single foot, like a swift-moving elephant taking long strides, to carry out the task.
tāmapaśyadbalākīrṇāṅ harirājamahāpurīm.

durgāmikṣvākuśārdūlaḥ kiṣkindhāṅ girisaṅgaṭē4.31.16৷৷


ikṣvākuśārdūlaḥ tiger of the Ikshvaku race, girisaṅkaṭē in between the mountains, balākīrṇām filled by the army, durgām inaccessible, harirājamahāpurīm vanara king's capital city, tām that, kiṣkindhām Kishkinda, apaśyat saw.

The tiger of the Ikshvaku race saw the inaccessible Kishkinda, the capital of vanara kingdom, located between mountains and fortified with the army.
rōṣātprasphuramāṇōṣṭha ssugrīvaṅ prati lakṣmaṇaḥ.

dadarśa vānarānbhīmākaniṣkindhāyā bahiścarān4.31.17৷৷


sugrīvam prati Sugriva in turn, rōṣāt due to anger, prasphuramāṇōṣṭhaḥ lips trembling, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, kiṣkindhāyāḥ Kishkinda's, bahiścarān front guards, bhīmān fierceful ones, vānarān monkeys, dadarśa saw.

His lips trembling in anger, Lakshmana saw fierceful monkey guards of Sugriva at the entrance of Kishkinda city.
taṅ dṛṣṭvā vānarāssarvē lakṣmaṇaṅ puruṣarṣabham.

śailaśṛṅgāṇi śataśaḥ pravṛddhāṅśca mahīruhān4.31.18৷৷

jagṛhuḥ kuñjaraprakhyā vānarāḥ parvatāntarē.


parvatāntarē in between the mountains, kuñjaraprakhyāḥ comparable to elephants in size, sarvē all, vānarāḥ monkeys, puruṣarṣabham bull among men, taṅ lakṣmaṇam that Lakshmana, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, śataśaḥ in hundreds, śailaśṛṅgāṇi boulders of rocks, pravṛddhān fully grown, mahīruhān ca huge trees, jagṛhuḥ seized.

Hundreds of monkeys of the size of elephants stood holding huge trees and boulders of rocks on seeing Lakshmana, the bull among men.
tāngṛhītapraharaṇānsarvāndṛṣṭvā tu lakṣmaṇaḥ4.31.19৷৷

babhūva dviguṇaṅ kruddhō bahvindhana ivānalaḥ.


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, gṛhītapraharaṇān seized weapons, tān them, harīn monkeys, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, bahvindhanaḥ lots of firewood, analaḥ iva like fire, dviguṇam doubled, kruddhaḥ angry, babhūva became.

On seeing the monkeys wielding weapons, Lakshmana's anger doubled like logs of firewood put to burning.
taṅ tē bhayaparītāṅgāḥ kruddhaṅ dṛṣṭvā plavaṅgamāḥ4.31.20৷৷

kālamṛtyuyugāntābhaṅ śataśō vidrutā diśaḥ.


śataśaḥ in hundreds, tē they, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, kruddham enraged, kālamṛtyuyugāntābham seemed like the god of death at the end of creation, tam him, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, bhayaparītāṅgāḥ limbs shaking in fear, diśaḥ directions, vidrutāḥ fled.

Seeing enraged Lakshmana, who looked like a veritable god of Death at the time of dissolution of the universe, hundreds of monkeys, their limbs trembling in fear ran in different directions.
tatassugrīvabhavanaṅ praviśya haripuṅgavāḥ4.31.21৷৷

krōdhamāgamanaṅ caiva lakṣmaṇasya nyavēdayan.


tataḥ then, haripuṅgavā: monkey-chiefs, sugrīvabhavanam to Sugriva's mansion, praviśya having entered, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, āgamanam about the arrival, krōdhaṅ caiva and his anger, nyavēdayan reported.

Having entered Sugriva's palace, the monkey-chiefs reported the arrival of angry Lakshmana.
tārayā sahitaḥ kāmī saktaḥ kapivṛṣō rahaḥ4.31.22৷৷

na tēṣāṅ kapivīrāṇāṅ śuśrāva vacanaṅ tadā.


tadā then, kāmī passionate, tārayā with Tara, sahitaḥ along with, rahaḥ in privy, saktaḥ engrossed in love, kapivṛṣaḥ bull among monkeys, tēṣām their, kapivīrāṇām of the monkey-chiefs, vacanam words, na śuśrāva not heed.

But Sugriva who was engrossed in overtures with passionate Tara, did not heed the words of the monkey-chiefs.
tatassacivasandiṣṭā harayō rōmaharṣaṇāḥ.

girikuñjara mēghābhā nagaryā niryayustadā৷৷4.31.23৷৷


tataḥ then, rōmaharṣaṇāḥ who causes horripilation, girikuñjaramēghābhāḥ fierceful like the mountains, elephants and clouds, harayaḥ the monkeys, sacivasandiṣṭāḥ commaded by the ministers, tadā then, nagarāt from the city, niryayuḥ they left.

Commanded by the ministers, the monkeys who looked like fierce mountains, elephants and clouds that caused horripilation, left the place at once.
nakhadaṅṣṭrāyudhā ghōrāssarvē vikṛtadarśanāḥ4.31.24৷৷

sarvē śārdūladarpāśca sarvē ca vikṛtānanāḥ.


ghōrā: dreadful, nakhadaṅṣṭrāyudhāḥ nails and teeth as weapons, sarvē all, vikṛtadarśanāḥ horrifying to look, sarvē all, śārdūladarpā: proud as tigers, sarvē ca and all, vikṛtānanāḥ of deformed faces.

The monkeys, their faces, deformed, their nails and teeth like weapons were dreadful and horrifying in appearance, proud as tigers;
daśanāgabalāḥ kēcitkēciddaśaguṇōttarāḥ4.31.25৷৷

kēcinnāgasahasrasya babhūvustulyavikramāḥ.


kēcit some, daśanāgabalāḥ possessed the strength of ten elephants, kēcit some, daśaguṇōttarāḥ of a hundred elephants in strength, kēcit some, nāgasahasrasya of a thousand elephants in strength, tulyavikramāḥ equal in valour, babhūvuḥ were.

Of them some possessed the strength of ten, some a hundred and some a thousand elephants. All of them were of equal valour.
kṛtsnāṅhi kapibhirvyāptāṅ drumahassairmahābalaiḥ4.31.26৷৷

apaśyallakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhaḥ kiṣkindhāṅ tāṅ durāsadām.


kṛtsnāṅ entire palace, kruddhaḥ angry, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, drumahastai: holding trees in hands, mahābalaiḥ mighty strong, kapibhiḥ monkeys, vyāptām huge, durāsadām inaccessible, tāṅ kiṣkindhām that Kishkinda, apaśyat saw.

Enraged Lakshmana saw the huge inacccessible city of Kishkinda filled with mighty strong and fierce monkeys holding trees in hand.
tatastē harayassarvē prākāraparighāntarāt4.31.27৷৷

niṣkramyōdagrasattvāstu tasthurāviṣkṛtaṅ tadā.


tataḥ then, udagrasattvāḥ with marked strength, sarvē all, tē harayaḥ the monkeys, prākāraparighāntarāt
crossing the iron-boundary from beneath, niṣkramya came out, tadā then, aviṣkṛtam made their appearance, tasthuḥ stood.

The mighty monkeys came out of the entrance of the iron-boundary wall from beneath and made their appearance and stood in full attention.
sugrīvasya pramādaṅ ca pūrvajaṅ cārtamātmavān4.31.28৷৷

buddhvā kōpavaśaṅ vīraḥ punarēva jagāma saḥ.


ātmavān sensible, saḥ vīraḥ that warrior, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, pramādam dereliction, pūrvajaṅ ca and his elder brother, ārtam helpless, buddhvā recognising, punarēva once again, krōdhavaśam under the grip of anger, jagāma was drawn.

The sensible warrior, recognising Sugriva's dereliction of duty and his own brother's agony once again flew into fury.
sa dīrghōṣṇamahōcchavāsaḥ kōpasaṅraktalōcanaḥ4.31.29৷৷

babhūva naraśārdūla ssadhūma iva pāvakaḥ.


dīrghōṣṇamahōcchavāsaḥ sighing with hot deep breath, kōpasaṅraktalōcanaḥ with his eyes turned red out of anger, naraśārdūlaḥ tiger among men, saḥ he, sadhūmaḥ with smoke, pāvakaḥ iva like fire, babhūva appeared.

Sighing hot, deep breath, eyes turned red in anger, this tiger among men appeared like fire with smoke (The sigh was smoke and red eyes, fire).
bāṇaśalyasphurajjihvassāyakāsanabhōgavān4.31.30৷৷

svatējōviṣasaṅghātaḥ pañcāsya iva pannagaḥ.


bāṇaśalyasphurajjihvaḥ the iron nails fixed on the arrows as moving fangs, sāyakāsanabhōgavān bow as the snake, svatējōviṣasaṅghātaḥ his own brightness as poison, pañcāsyaḥ five-hooded, pannagaḥ iva snake like.

His bow was like the hood of a snake,with the iron nails fixed on the tip of his arrows like moving fangs and his own brightness like the venom of the five-hooded snake.
taṅ dīptamiva kālāgniṅ nāgēndramiva kōpitam4.31.31৷৷

samāsādyāṅgadastrāsādviṣādamagamadbhṛśam.


aṅgadaḥ Angada, dīptam glowing, kālāgnim iva like fire at the dissolution of the world, kōpitam enraged, nāgēndramiva like lord of snakes, tam him, samāsādya on nearing, trāsāt with fear, bhṛśam greatly, viṣādam worry, agamat felt.

Dismayed, Angada approached Lakshmana, who was glowing like fire at the time of dissolution of the world and enraged like the lord of serpents.
sō.ṅgadaṅ rōṣatāmrākṣassandidēśa mahāyaśāḥ4.31.32৷৷

sugrīvaḥ kathyatāṅ vatsa! mamāgamanamityuta.


rōṣatāmrākṣaḥ eyes red with anger, mahāyaśāḥ renowned, saḥ he, aṅgadam to Angada, vatsa child, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, mama about my, āgamanam arrival, kathyatām inform, iti uta thus, sandidēśa sent word.

Renowned Lakshmana, with his eyes turned red in anger said to Angada 'O dear, inform Sugriva, about my arrival'.
ēṣa rāmānujaḥ prāptasvatsakāśamarindama4.31.33৷৷

bhrāturvyasanasantaptō dvāri tiṣṭhati lakṣmaṇaḥ.

tasya vākyaṅ yadi ruciḥ kriyatāṅ sādhu vānara4.31.34৷৷

ityuktvā śīghramāgaccha vatsa vākyamarindama.


arindama O subduer of enemies, vatsa dear, bhrātuḥ brother's, vyasanasantaptaḥ burning in grief,
rāmānujaḥ Rama's younger brother, ēṣaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ this Lakshmana, tvatsakāśam to your presence, prāptaḥ arrived, dvāri at the entrance, tiṣṭhati stands, vānara Vanara, ruciḥ yadi if you like, tasya his, vākyē words, sādhu well, kriyatām do accordingly, iti thus, uktvā having spoken, śīghram swiftly, āgaccha come.

'O subduer of enemies! speak in this way: 'Lakshmana, the dear younger brother of Rama has come to you and waits for your presence at the entrance, burning in grief of his elder brother. Well, if you like to hear his words, do as you please.' 'Return swiftly after saying so.'
lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā śōkāviṣṭō.ṅgadō.bravīt.

pitussamīpamāgamya saumitrirayamāgataḥ4.31.35৷৷


lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā on hearing, śōkāviṣṭa: grief-stricken, aṅgadaḥ Angada, pituḥ father's, samīpam near, āgamya reached, ayam this, saumitriḥ Saumitri, āgataḥ has come, abravīt said.

On hearing Lakshmana's words Angada became sad. He approached his father (Sugriva) and said 'Saumitri has come'. (This sloka appears an interpolation).
athāṅgadastasya vacō niśamya

sambhrāntabhāvaḥ paridīnavaktraḥ.

nipatya tūrṇaṅ nṛpatēstarasvī

tataḥ rumāyāścaraṇau vavandē4.31.36৷৷


atha then, tarasvī powerful, aṅgadaḥ Angada, tasya his, vaca: word, niśamya on hearing, sambhrāntabhāvaḥ agitated in mind, paradīnavaktraḥ face turned pale, nipatya prostrating, tūrṇaṅ at once, nṛpatēḥ king's, tataḥ then, rumāyāḥ Ruma's, caraṇau feet, vavandē offered salutations.

On hearing Lakshmana's words powerful Angada felt agitated. His face turned pale. He went and prostrated at once to the king and then to the queen, Ruma.
saṅṅgṛhya pādau pituragryatējāḥ

jagrāha mātuḥ punarēva pādau.

pādau rumāyāśca nipīḍayitvā

nivēdayāmāsa tatastamartham4.31.37৷৷


agratējāḥ highly brilliant Angada, pituḥ father's, pādau feet, saṅgṛhya holding, punarēva again, mātuḥ mother's, pādau feet, jagrāha held, rumāyāḥ Ruma's, pādau ca feet, nipīḍayitvā pressing, tamartham the message, tataḥ then, nivēdayāmāsa revealed.

Highly brilliant Angada holding his father's feet first, then mother's and thereafter Ruma's, reported the matter to Sugriva.
sa nidrāmadasaṅvītō vānarō na vibuddhavān.

babhūva madamattaśca madanēna ca mōhitaḥ4.31.38৷৷


nidrāmadasaṅvītaḥ overcome by drinks and sleep, vānaraḥ monkey, na vibuddhavān he did not come to his senses, madamattaśca intoxicated, madanēna ca overwhelmed by love, mōhitaḥ deluded, babhūva appeared.

The monkey was too drowsy with drink, too intoxicated with passion to come back to his senses.
tataḥ kilakilāṅ cakrurlakṣmaṇaṅ prēkṣya vānarāḥ.

prasādayantastaṅ kruddhaṅ bhayamōhitacētasaḥ4.31.39৷৷


tataḥ then, kruddham angry, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, prēkṣya looking, vānarāḥ monkeys, bhayamōhitacētasaḥ feeling scared at heart, tam them, prasādayantaḥ pleasing him, kilakilām cakruḥ made a noise.

Looking at angry Lakshmana, and scared at heart, the monkeys started making a noise in order to please him.
tē mahaughanibhaṅ dṛṣṭvā vajrāśanisamasvanam.

siṅhanādaṅ samaṅ cakrurlakṣmaṇasya samīpataḥ4.31.40৷৷


tē they, dṛṣṭvā seeing, mahaughanibham looked like a mighty flood, vajrāśanisamasvanam noise like a thunderbolt, siṅhanādam lion's roar, samam like, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, samīpataḥ near, cakruḥ made.

They saw Lakshmana advancing like a mighty flood and went near him making sounds like the thunderbolt or a lion.
tēna śabdēna mahatā pratyabudhyata vānaraḥ.

madavihvalatāmrākṣō vyākulasragvibhūṣaṇaḥ4.31.41৷৷


mahatā by the great, tēna śabdēna by that sound, vānaraḥ monkey, madavihvalatāmrākṣaḥ having red eyes due to intoxication, vyākulasragvibhūṣaṇaḥ ornaments and garlands in disarry, pratyabudhyata awakened.

By the great sound (of the monkeys) the drunken red-eyed vanara king awakened, his garlands and ornaments in disarray.
athāṅgadavacaḥ śrutvā tēnaiva ca samāgatau.

mantriṇau vānarēndrasya sammatau dāradarśinau4.31.42৷৷

plakṣaścaiva prabhāvaśca mantriṇāvarthadharmayōḥ.

vaktumuccāvacaṅ prāptaṅ lakṣmaṇaṅ tau śaśaṅsatuḥ4.31.43৷৷


atha then, aṅgadavacaḥ Angada's words, śrutvā hearing, tēnaiva along with him, samāgatau both of them assembled, sammatau dāradarśinau both of them permitted to have audience with women-folk, arthadharmayōḥ in matters of wealth and righteousness, mantriṇau ministers, plakṣaścaiva Plaksha and, prabhāvaśca Prabhava also, tau both, vānarēndrasya the king's, mantriṇau both
ministers, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana's, prāptam arrived, vaktum to tell, uccāvacam to talk , śaṅsatuḥ both of them spoke.

On hearing Angada's words the two ministers named Plaksha and Prabhava who were perrmitted to have audience with the queens went to the harem on invitation from Angada. They reported to Sugriva about the arrival of Lakshmana who had come to speak to him about matters regading wealth and righteousness.
prasādayitvā sugrīvaṅ vacanaissāmaniścitaiḥ.

āsīnaṅ paryupāsīnau yathā śakraṅ marutpatim4.31.44৷৷


āsīnam seated, sugrīvam Sugriva, marutpatim lord of Maruts, śakraṅ yathā like Indra, paryupāsīnau both seated close, sāmaniścitaiḥ by conciliatory words, vacanaiḥ with words, prasādayitvā after pleasing.

Both of them sat close by Sugriva who was like Indra and said these pleasing words:
satyasandhau mahābhāgau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

vayasyabhāvaṅ samprāptau rājyārhau rājyadāyinau4.31.45৷৷


satyasandhau both true to their promise, mahābhāgau both venerable, rājyārhau deserving kingdom, rājyadāyinau have given sovereignty, bhrātarau two brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, vayasyabhāvam friendship, samprāptau extended .

'Rama and Lakshmana, both the brothers venerable and true to their promise, have conferred on you sovereignty and have extended friendship.'
tayōrēkō dhanuṣpāṇirdvāri tiṣṭhati lakṣmaṇaḥ.

yasya bhītāḥ pravēpantō nādānmuñcanti vānarāḥ4.31.46৷৷


tayōḥ between the two, ēkaḥ only, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, dhanuṣpāṇiḥ wielding a bow in his hand, dvāri at the entrance, tiṣṭhati is standing, yasya his, bhītāḥ frightened ones, pravēpantaḥ are
trembling, vānarāḥ monkeys, nādān sounds, muñcanti are producing.

'Of the two, only Lakshmana is standing at the entrance wielding his bow in hand. The monkeys are trembling in fear and running about, making a loud noise'.
sa ēṣa rāghavabhrātā lakṣmaṇō vākyasārathiḥ.

vyavasāyarathaḥ prāptastasya rāmasya śāsanāt4.31.47৷৷


tasya his, rāmasya Rama's, śāsanāt by the command, rāghavabhrātā Rama's brother, saḥ ēṣaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmna, vākyasārathiḥ his words as a charioteer, vyavasāyarathaḥ his work a chariot, pāptaḥ has come.

'By the command of Rama, his brother has come to you, Rama's words as charioteer and his work as chariot'.
ayaṅ ca dayitō rājaṅstārāyā stanayō.ṅgadaḥ.

lakṣmaṇēna sakāśaṅ tē prēṣitastvarayā.nagha!4.31.48৷৷


anagha O sinless one!, rājan O king, tārāyāḥ Tara's, tanaya: son, dayitaḥ dear one, ayaṅ aṅgadaḥ this Angada, lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, tvarayā at once, tē sakāśam to your presence, prēṣitaḥ is sent to you.

'O blameless king! Tara's son, Angada, has sent us into your presence. Lakshmana has come.'
sō.yaṅ rōṣaparītākṣō dvāri tiṣṭhati vīryavān.

vānarānvānarapatē! cakṣuṣā pradahanniva4.31.49৷৷


vānarapatē O lord of vanaras, vīryavān valiant, ayam this person, rōṣaparītākṣaḥ anger-eyed, cakṣuṣā with his eyes, vānarān monkeys, pradahanniva as if burning, dvāri at the entrance, tiṣṭhati is waiting.

'O lord of monkeys! Valiant Lakshmana is standing at the entrance,eyes filled with anger as if he would burn the vanaras'.
tasya mūrdhnā praṇamya tvaṅ saputrassahabandhubhiḥ.

gaccha śīghraṅ mahārāja! rōṣō hyasya nivartyatām4.31.50৷৷


mahārāja! O great king!, tvam you, saputraḥ with your son, sahabāndhavaḥ with your relations, śīghram quickly, gaccha go, mūrdhnā face, tasya his, praṇamya after saluting, adya now, rōṣaḥ anger, nivartyatām may be averted.

'O great king! Go at once with your son and relations, salute him now and avert his anger'.
yadāha rāmō dharmātmā tatkuruṣva samāhitaḥ.

rājaṅ! stiṣṭhasva samayē bhava satyapratiśravāḥ4.31.51৷৷


rājan O king, dharmātmā righteous, rāmaḥ Rama, yat whatever, āha says tat that, samāhitaḥ with a steady mind, kuruṣva you may do, satyapratiśravāḥ be true to your promise, svasamayē your agreement, bhava you.

'O king! be true to your promise to his brother, righteous Rama without fail. Honour the agreement.'
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē ēkatriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfirst sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
