Sloka & Translation

[The sage consoles Sampati --- Nishakara speaks about Rama coming to destroy the demons and their king Ravana.]

ēvamuktā muniśrēṣṭha marudaṅ duḥkhitō bhṛśaṅ.

atha dhyātvā muhūrtaṅ tu bhagavānidamabravīt৷৷4.62.1৷৷


ēvam thus, uktā having spoken, muniśrēṣṭhaḥ venerable sage, marudaṅ roared, duḥkhitō bhṛśaṅ very sadly, atha then, dhyātvā reflecting, murhūtaṅ for a moment, bhagavān divine sage, idam thus, abravīta said.

'When thus I spoke to the venerable sage in that manner roaring very painfully the divine sage replied after reflecting silently for a moment:
pakṣau tu tē prapakṣau ca punaranyaubhaviṣyataḥ.

prāṇāśca cakṣuṣī caiva vikramaśca balaṅ ca tē৷৷4.62.2৷৷


pakṣau tu wings, tē to you, prapakṣau ca and feathers, puna: again, anyau and other, prāṇāśca life also, cakṣuṣī eyes, caiva also, vikramaśca prowess, balaṅ ca and strength, tē to you, bhaviṣyataḥ you will attain.

'You will get new wings and feathers and also other parts.You will attain vision, life, prowess and strength.
purāṇē sumahatkāryaṅ bhaviṣyati mayā śrutaṅ.

dṛṣṭaṅ mē tapasā caiva śrutvā ca viditaṅ mama4.62.3৷৷


purāṇē in the purana (history), sumahat very great, kāryaṅ task, bhaviṣyati will happen, mayā by you, śrutaṅ I heard, dṛṣṭaṅ seen, mē with my, tapasā by the power of penance, caiva also, śrutvāca I heard, mama me, viditam I came to know.

'I have foreseen with the power of my penance that a great task will be done by you. I have also heard about it in the Puranas and came to know of it.
rājā daśarathō nāma kaścidikṣvākunandanaḥ.

tasya putrō mahātējā ramōnāma bhaviṣyati৷৷4.62.4৷৷


ikṣvākunandanaḥ delight of the Ikshvaku family, daśarathō Dasaratha, nāma named, rājā king, kaścita indeed, tasya his, putrō son, mahā highly, tējāḥ effulgent, ramō Rama, nāma by name, bhaviṣyati will beget.

'Indeed in the Ikshvaku family there will be a king named Dasaratha. He will beget a brilliant son named Rama.
araṇyaṅ ca saha rbhātrā lakṣmaṇēnagamiṣyati.

asminnarthē niyukta ssanpitrā satyaparākramaḥ৷৷4.62.5৷৷


asminnarthē on account of, niyuktassan assigned by, pitrā his father, satyaparākramaḥ strength of truth, saha bhrātrā with his brother, lakṣmaṇēna accompanied by Lakshmana, gamiṣyati will proceed, araṇyaṅ the forest.

'On account of the command of his father, Rama armed with the strength of truth will proceed to the forest with his brother Lakshmana.
naiṛtō rāvaṇō nāma tasya bhāryāṅ hariṣyati.

rākṣasēndrō janasthanādavadhya ssuradānavaiḥ4.62.6৷৷


suradānavaiḥ by gods and demons, avadhyaḥ indestructible, rākṣasēndrō king of demons, rāvaṇō by Ravana, nāma named, janasthanāt from Janasthana, naiṛtō in the south-west direction, tasya his, bhāryāṅ wife, hariṣyati will be abducting.

'The king of demons, Ravana who is indestructible even by gods and demons will be
abducting his wife from Janastahana.
sā ca kāmaiḥ pralōbhyantī bhakṣyai:bhōjyaiśca maithilī.

nabhōkṣyati mahābhāgā duḥkhē magnā yaśasvinī৷৷4.62.7৷৷


mahābhāgā noble, yaśasvinī famed, duḥkhē in sorrow, magnā immersed, na bhōkṣyati will not eat, sā she, ca and, kāmaiḥ pleasures, pralōbhyantī however, bhakṣyai: eatables, bhōjyaiśca to be enjoyed, maithilī princess from Mithila.

'Immersed in grief, chaste and famed Sita, will not take any food or enjoy pleasures however much she is tempted.
paramānnaṅtu vaidēhyā jñātvā dāsyati vā saḥ.

yadannamamṛtaprakhyaṅ surāṇāmapidurlabham4.62.8৷৷


surāṇām of gods, vaidēhyā by Sita, dāsyati avoiding to eat, jñātvā knowing, vā to, sa: he, paramānnaṅtu divine food, yadannam as food, amṛtaprakhyam like nectar, apidurlabhaṅ that which is difficult to get.

'Knowing that Vaidehi is not eating food(given by Ravana) Indra,the ruler of gods, will offer nectar-like food rare even for gods.
tadannaṅ maithilīprāpya vijñāyēndrādidaṅtviti.

agramudṛtya rāmāya bhūtalē nirvapiṣyati৷৷4.62.9৷৷


tadannaṅ such food, maithilī princess from Mithila, prāpya received, vijñāya having understood, adidaṅtviti this is provided by, indrāt Indra, agram large portion, udṛtya taken out, rāmāya for Rama, bhūtalē on the earth, nirvapiṣyati offers.

'Having understood that it has been provided by Indra, Sita will take out a large portion of it and pour it on the ground (as an offering to Rama) and say 'I offer it to Rama wherever he is on earth'.
yadi jīvati mē bhartā lakṣmaṇēna saha prabhuḥ.

dēvatvaṅ gacchtō rvāpi tayō rannamidaṅtviti4.62.10৷৷


mē my, bhartā husband, lakṣmaṇēna with Lakshmana, saha along with, prabhuḥ king, yadi like that, jīvati if living, dēvatvaṅ attained heaven, gacchataḥ have gone, vāpi or so, tayō: their, annamidaṅtviti let this food be enjoyed by them.

'If my husband and Lakshmana are living or else even if they have attained heaven let this food be enjoyed by them', Sita will say.
ēṣyantyanvēṣakā stasyā rāmadūtāḥ plavāṅgamāḥ.

ākhayēyā rāma mahīṣī tvayā tēbhyō vihaṅgama4.62.11৷৷


rāmadūtāḥ Rama's messenger, ēṣyanti and others that way, anvēṣakā to search, tasyāḥ for her, plavāṅgamāḥ monkeys, ākhayēyā narrate, rāmaḥ Rama, mahīṣī queen, tvayā your, tēbhyō to them, vihaṅgama bird (Sampati).

'Rama's messenger and other monkeys will be coming to search for the his queen. O Sampati! you should narrate this to them.
sarvathā hi nagantavyamīdṛśaḥ kva gamiṣyasi.

dēśakālau pratīkṣasva pakṣau tvaṅ pratipatsyasē4.62.12৷৷


sarvathā in all respects, hi indeed, na gantavyam should not leave, idṛśaḥ remain here, kva gamiṣyasi where can you go, dēśakālau time and place, pratīkṣasva waiting for, pakṣau wings, tvaṅ yours, pratipatsyasē will again grow.

'It is good for you in all respects to remain here. Where can you go (without wings)? Wait for appropriate time and place. You will recover your wings'.
nōtsahēyamahaṅkartumadhyaiva tvāṅ sapakṣakam.

ihastha stvaṅ tu lōkānāṅ hitaṅ kāryaṅ kariṣyasi৷৷4.62.13৷৷


nōtsaha not enthusiastic, iyam for me, ahaṅkartu if I make you get (the wings), madhyaiva remain here, tvāṅ your, sapakṣakam your wings, ihastha: here itself, tvaṅ you, tu to you, lōkānāṅ hitāṅ good for the world, kāryaṅ task, kariṣyasi you will do.

'I am not enthusiastic about giving you the wings now. Remain here and carry on the work for the welfare of the world.
tvayāpi khalu tatkāryaṅ tayōścanṛpaputrayōḥ.

brāhmaṇānāṅ surāṇāṅ ca munīnāṅ vāsavasya ca৷৷4.62.14৷৷


tvayā your, api and, khalu for all, tat that, kāryaṅ task, tayō: for both of them, ca and, nṛpaputrayōḥ princes, brāhmaṇānāṅ for the brahmins, surāṇāṅ ca and gods, munīnāṅ for sages, vāsavasyaca and those who live here.

'(Carry on) the work not only for the princes (Rama and Lakshmana) but also for the brahmins, sages, gods and others who live here.
icchāmyahamapidraṣṭuṅ bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

nēcchēciraṅ dhārayutuṅ prāṇāṅ styakṣyē kalēbaraṅ.

maharṣi stvabravīdēvaṅ dṛṣṭatatvārthadarśanaḥ৷৷4.62.15৷৷


icchāma desirous, ahaṅ api I am also, draṣṭuṅ to see, bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau brothers Rama and Lakshmana, na not, icchā ciraṅ desire to live long, dhārayutuṅ to hold on, prāṇān life, tyakṣyē will give up, kalēbaraṅ my body, maharṣi: sage, tu your, abravīt said, ēvaṅ this, dṛṣṭaḥ after seeing, tatvārthadarśanaḥ knower of self.

'I also want to see Rama and Lakshmana. But I do not like to hold on to my life for long. Hence I will give up my body'. The knower of self, the sage (Nishakara) said this to Sampati.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē dviṣaṣṭitama ssargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtysecond sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
