[Hanuman apprises Sri Rama of Sita's presence under the Simsupa tree surrounded by demonesses and presents the Chudamani to Rama in the presence of Sugriva.]

tataḥ prasravaṇaṅ śailaṅ tē gatvā citrakānanam.

praṇamya śirasā rāmaṅ lakṣmaṇaṅ ca mahābalam৷৷5.65.1৷৷

yuvarājaṅ puraskṛtya sugrīvamabhivādya ca.

pravṛttimatha sītāyāḥ pravaktumupacakramuḥ৷৷5.65.2৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, tē they, citrakānanam wonderful forest of Chitra, prasravaṇam śailam to Prasravana mount, yuvarājam heir apparent, puraskṛtya placing in front with respect, gatvā having arrived, rāmam to Rama, mahābalam mighty, lakṣmaṇaṅ ca and Lakshmana, śirasā bowed down, praṇamya offered salutations, sugrīvam to Sugriva, abhivādya ca offered obeisance, atha and then, sītāyāḥ regarding Sita's, pravṛttim state, pravaktum to tell, upacakramuḥ began.

Thereafter the vanaras arrived at the Prasrvana mount, with wonderful forests and bowed down to Sri Rama and mighty Lakshaman and Sugriva placing their leader, heir apparent in front. Then they began telling the story of Sita and her state.
rāvaṇāntaḥ purē rōdhaṅ rākṣasībhiśca tarjanam.

rāmē samanurāgaṅ ca yaścāyaṅ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ৷৷5.65.3৷৷

ētadākhyānti tē sarvē harayō rāmasannidhau.


sarvē all, tē harayaḥ those vanaras, rāvaṇāntaḥ purē in the chambers of Ravana, rōdham detention, rākṣasībhiḥ ogresses, tarjanaṅ ca threatening, rāmē to Rama, samanurāgaṅ ca her devotion, yaḥ that which, ayam thus, samayaḥ time limit, kṛtaḥ set, ētat all that, rāmasannidhau in Rama's presence, ākhyānti told.

The monkeys in Rama's presence narrated all about Sita's detention in Ravana's
Ashoka garden, the ogresses threatening her and the time limit fixed by Ravana (for her survival).
vaidēhīmakṣatāṅ śrutvā rāmastūttaramabravīt৷৷5.65.4৷৷

kva sītā vartatē dēvī kathaṅ ca mayi vartatē.

ētanmē sarvamākhyāta vaidēhīṅ prati vānarāḥ৷৷5.65.5৷৷


vaidēhīm Vaidehi, akṣatām not harmed, śrutvā hearing, rāmastu Rama too, uttaram responded, abravīt asked, dēvī divine lady, sītā Sita, kva tell me, vartatē she is, mayi to me, katham how, vartatē is she, vānarāḥ vanara, vaidēhīṅ prati her disposition towards, ētat all that, sarvam every thing, mē to me, ākhyāta asked.

Hearing of Sita alive and not harmed, Rama asked the vanaras, 'How is Sita? How is she disposed to me? Tell me everything'.
rāmasya gaditaṅ śrutvā harayō rāmasannidhau.

cōdayanti hanūmantaṅ sītāvṛttāntakōvidam৷৷5.65.6৷৷


harayaḥ vanaras,rāmasya Rama's, gaditam words spoken, śrutvā hearing, sītāvṛttāntakōvidam who was aware of Sita's position, hanūmantam Hanuman, rāmasannidhau in the presence of Rama, cōdayanti requested to tell.

On hearing the words from Rama, the vanaras requested Hanuman who was aware of Sita's position to tell Rama all about her.
śrutvā tu vacanaṅ tēṣāṅ hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.

praṇamya śirasā dēvyai sītāyai tāṅ diśaṅ prati৷৷5.65.7৷৷

uvāca vākyaṅ vākyajñassītāyā darśanaṅ yathā.


mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, vākyajñaḥ wise in speech, hanumān Hanuman, tēṣām their,
vacanam words, śrutvā hearing, dēvyai to the divine lady, sītāyai Sita, tāṅ diśaṅ prati to the direction in which she was located, śirasā with head down, praṇamya offered salutations, sītāyāḥ about Sita's, darśanam finding, yathā these, vākyam words, uvāca spoke.

The son of the Wind god, Hanuman who was wise in speech heard the words of Rama, offered salutations to Sita in the direction in which she was located and narrated the story about her discovery.
samudraṅ laṅghayitvāhaṅ śatayōjanamāyatam৷৷5.65.8৷৷

agacchaṅ jānakīṅ sītāṅ mārgamāṇō didṛkṣayā.


aham I, śatayōjanam a hundred yojanas, āyatam wide, samudram ocean, laṅghayitvā having crossed, jānakīm Janaki,sītām Sita, mārgamāṇaḥ searching, didṛkṣayā with the intention of seeing, āgaccham reached.

"Having crossed the sea consisting of a hundred yojanas in quest of Vaidehi, I found her.
tatra laṅkēti nagarī rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ৷৷5.65.9৷৷

dakṣiṇasya samudrasya tīrē vasati dakṣiṇē.


tatra there, dakṣiṇasya samudrasya on the southern side of the sea, dakṣiṇē tīrē of the southern shore, durātmanaḥ evil-minded, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, laṅkēti in Lanka, nagarī city, vasati there is.

"On the southern shore of the ocean is situated the city of Lanka , ruled by the evil-minded Ravana.
tatra dṛṣṭā mayā sītā rāvaṇāntaḥ purē satī৷৷5.65.10৷৷

sannyasya tvayi jīvantī rāmā rāma manōratham.


rāmā Rama, tatra there, rāvaṇāntaḥ purē in the inner palace of Ravana, satī your wife, tvayi
your, manōratham her hopes, sannyasya giving up desires, jīvantī living, rāma lovely, sītā Sita, mayā by me, dṛṣṭā seen.

"There in the inner palace of Ravana, I saw your lovely wife Sita, with all her hopes pinned on you, giving up all other desires.
dṛṣṭā mē rākṣasīmadhyē tarjyamānā muhurmuhuḥ৷৷5.65.11৷৷

rākṣasībhirvirūpābhī rakṣitā pramadāvanē.


pramadāvanē in that beautiful garden, virūpābhiḥ hideous, rākṣasībhiḥ rakshasas, rakṣitā guarded, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, tarjyamānā threatening, mē I, rākṣasīmadhyē in the midst of ogresses, dṛṣṭā saw.

"I found her in the beautiful garden guarded by hideous ogresses threatening her again and again৷৷
duḥkha māsādyatē dēvī tathā.duḥkhōcitā satī৷৷5.65.12৷৷

rāvaṇāntaḥ purē ruddhā rākṣasībhi ssurakṣitā.

ēkavēṇīdharā dīnā tvayi cintāparāyaṇā৷৷5.65.13৷৷

adhaḥśayyā vivarṇāṅgī padminīva himāgamē.

rāvaṇādvinivṛttārthā martavyakṛtaniścayā৷৷5.65.14৷৷

dēvī kathañcitkākutstha tvanmanā mārgitā mayā.


tathā in that way, duḥkhōcitā mind filled with grief, dēvī divine lady, duḥkham grief, āpadyatē not deserve to experience, rāvaṇāntaḥpurē in the inner palace of Ravana, ruddhā detained, rākṣasībhi by ogresses, ssurakṣitā guarded by, ēkavēṇīdharā wearing a single braid( a mark of desolation),dīnā pathetic, tvayi your,satī wife,cintāparāyaṇā absorbed in your thought, adha: śayyā now lying on bare ground, himāgamē in winter season, padminīva like the lotus, vivarṇāṅgī limbs turned pale, rāvaṇāt by Ravana, vinivṛttārthā averse to Ravana, martavyakṛntiścayā determined to die, kākutstha Rama alone, tvanmanāḥ in her mind, dēvī Sita,
kathañcit somehow, mārgitā found.

"Sita, who did not deserve and yet was full of grief was detained by Ravana in his inner palace, guarded by ogresses. She had single braid (a sign of desolation), was pathetic, and totally absorbed in your thought. She was lying on bare ground with her limbs turned pale, like lotus in winter. She was averse to Ravana and was determined to commit suicide. She has only Rama in her mind. Somehow I found her.
ikṣvākuvaṅśavikhyātiṅ śanaiḥ kīrtayatānagha৷৷5.65.15৷৷

sā mayā naraśārdūla viśvāsamupapāditā.


anagha sinless one, naraśārdūla tiger among men, ikṣvākuvaṅśavikhyātim all about the glory of Ikshvaku race, śanaiḥ slowly, kīrtayatā praised, mayā by me, sā she, viśvāsam confidence, upapāditā to inspire.

"O sinless one! O tiger among men! To inspire confidence in her I praised the glory of your Ikshvaku dynasty.
tata ssambhāṣitā dēvī sarvamarthaṅ ca darśitā৷৷5.65.16৷৷

rāmasugrīvasakhyaṅ ca śrutvā prītimupāgatā.

niyata ssamudācārō bhaktiścāsyāstathā tvayi৷৷5.65.17৷৷


tataḥ then, dēvī divine lady, sambhāṣitā talked, sarvam all,artham all facts,darśitā presented to her, rāmasugrīvasakhyaṅ ca about the alliance of Rama and Sugriva, śrutvā on hearing, prītim affectionately, upāgatā became, asyāḥ her, samudācāraḥ virtuous, niyataḥ fixed, tathā so also, tvayi towards, bhaktiśca and devotion.

"When the divine lady talked to me, I presented all the facts about the alliance of Rama and Sugriva. On hearing me, virtuous Sita, whose devotion is fixed on you became delighted.
ēvaṅ mayā mahābhāgā dṛṣṭā janakanandinī.

ugrēṇa tapasā yuktā tvadbhaktyā puruṣarṣabha৷৷5.65.18৷৷


puruṣarṣabha bull among men, ugrēṇa formidable, tapasā austerity, tvadbhaktyā devotion to you, yuktā filled with, mahābhāgā prosperous, janakanandinī delight of Janaka, mayā by me, ēvam that way, dṛṣṭā seen.

"O bull among men! I saw Janaki,the delight of Janaka, a formidable lady filled with devotion to you and richly endowed with austerity.
abhijñānaṅ ca mē dattaṅ yathā vṛttaṅ tavāntikē.

citrakūṭē mahāprājña vāyasaṅ prati rāghava৷৷5.65.19৷৷


mahāprājña very wise, citrakūṭē in Chitrakuta, tava your, antikē provided me, vāyasaṅ prati with an anecdote of a crow, yathā so also, vṛttam told, abhijñānam as an identification for you, mē to me, dattam presented.

"O wise one, with your ring given her, she told me an anecdote of a crow that took place at Chitrakuta.
vijñāpyaśca naravyāghrō rāmō vāyusuta tvayā.

akhilēnēha yaddhṛṣṭamiti māmāha jānakī৷৷5.65.20৷৷


vāyusuta son of the Wind-god, naravyāghraḥ tiger among men, rāmaḥ Rama, tvayā your, iha here, yat that which, dṛṣṭam seen, akhilēna should tell, vijñāpyaḥ should let him know, iti thus, jānakī Janaki, mām me, āha told.

(She said)'O son of the Wind-god! you should let Rama, the tiger among men know all that you have seen here.
ayaṅ cāsmai pradātavyō yatnātsuparirakṣitaḥ.

bruvatā vacanānyēvaṅ sugrīvasyōpaśṛṇvataḥ৷৷5.65.21৷৷


sugrīvasya while Sugriva, upaśṛṇvataḥ within hearing of, ēvam that way, vacanāni these words, bruvatā that I said, yatnāt the efforts, suparirakṣitaḥ kept with great care, ayaṅ ca and I, asmai this, pradātavyaḥ be presented.

'Within hearing of Sugriva, tell him about your efforts. Present this(signet) to Rama carefully preserved by me.
ēṣa cūḍāmaṇiśśrīmān mayā suparirakṣitaḥ.

manaśśilāyāstilakō gaṇḍapārśvē nivēśitaḥ৷৷5.65.22৷৷

tvayā praṇaṣṭhē tilakē taṅ kila smartumarhasi.


śrīmān prosperous, ēṣaḥ this, cūḍāmaṇiḥ Chudamani, mayā by me, suparirakṣitaḥ very carefully preserved, tilakē red mark on the forehead, praṇaṣṭhē when it was, tvayā by you, manaśśilāyāḥ with the stone pigment, tilakaḥ mark on the forehead, gaṇḍapārśvē on my forehead, nivēśitaḥ kila decorated indeed, tam smartum remind him, arhasi is proper.

'This auspicious (jewel) Chudamani has been preserved by me very carefully. Remind him of the decorative red mark he painted with a stone pigment on my forehead, indeed, it is proper to remind him of this.
ēṣa niryātitaśśrīmānmayā tē vāri sambhavaḥ.

ētaṅ dṛṣṭvā prahṛṣyāmi vyasanē tvāmivānagha৷৷5.65.23৷৷


anagha sinless one, divyaḥ wonderful, ēṣaḥ this, niryātitaḥ sent to you, śrīmān prosperous one, vārisambhavaḥ born in the ocean, vyasanē in sorrow, ētam this (Chudamani), mayā I, dṛṣṭavā gazing, tvāmiva you only, prahṛṣyāmi was feeling happy.

'O sinless one! tell Rama that this auspicious Chudamani born in the ocean is sent to him and I was gazing at it as if it was him (Rama) and feeling happy.
jīvitaṅ dhārayiṣyāmi māsaṅ daśarathātmaja৷৷5.65.24৷৷

ūrdhvaṅ māsānna jīvēyaṅ rakṣasāṅ vaśamāgatā.


daśarathātmaja Dasaratha's son, māsam one month, jīvitam living, dhārayiṣyāmi will hold on to, rakṣasām these demons, vaśam captivated by, āgatā completion, māsāt after a month, ūrdhvam more than, na jīvēyam will not live.

'O Son of Dasaratha! I will hold on to life for a month. Captured by the demons, I will not live for more than a month'.
iti māmabravītsītā kṛśāṅgī dharmacāriṇī৷৷5.65.25৷৷

rāvaṇāntaḥ purē ruddhā mṛgīvōtphullalōcanā.


kṛśāṅgī enfeebled lady, dharmacāriṇī following righteous ways, rāvaṇāntaḥpurē in the inner palace of Ravana, ruddhā detained mṛgīva like a doe, utphullalōcanā eyes wide open in fear, sītā Sita, mām to me, iti this, abravīt said.

"With her limbs emaciated through austerities detained in Ravana's inner palace, eyes wide open in fear, Sita said this to me:
ētadēva mayākhyātaṅ sarvaṅ rāghava yadyathā৷৷5.65.26৷৷

sarvathā sāgarajalē saṅtāraḥ pravidhīyatām.


rāghava Rama, yat that which, yathā like that, ētat happened, sarvamēva every thing, mayā by me, khyātam has been said, sarvathā ever, sāgarajalē water of the ocean, santāraḥ means to cross the ocean, pravidhīyatām pay attention to.

"O Rama! I have spoken everything that has happened. We have to pay attention to the means of crossing the ocean."
tau jātāśvāsau rājaputrau viditvā taccābhijñānaṅ rāghavāya pradāya.

dēvyā cākhyātaṅ sarvamēvānupūrvyādvācā sampūrṇaṅ vāyuputtra śśaśaṅsa৷৷5.65.27৷৷


vāyuputraḥ son of the Wind-god, tau rājaputtrau the two princes Rama and Lakshmana, jātāśvāsau sighing in relief, viditvā knowing, tat that, abhijñānam identification, rāghavāya to Rama, pradāya communicated, dēvyā by Sita, ākhyātam having spoken, sarvamēva everything, sampūrṇam completely, ānupūrvyāt in an orderly manner, vācā spoken, śaśaṅsa Hanuman.

Coming to know that the two princes were sighing in relief, Hanuman presented the token of identification given by Sita to Rama, after having communicated in full the messsage of Sita in an orderly manner.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē pañcaṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
